[upbeat music] Hey, everybody. There's a squeak in the noise. There's a thing making some weird [laughs] noise.
• 0:17
Tony's also just walking in the door. I don't think that's inconsequential. Hey, everybody. Hey, everybody. Here comes Tony. There he is. He's got purple hair. He's- Purple hair, don't care.
• 0:29
Now he's- Purple hair, don't care. Now he's here. Is that fuchsia? Here, here's Tony now. Wait, no. Fuchsia is a little bit, uh, more subdued. [laughs] Is it... What? Is it this thing? No. What? Is it this thing? No.
• 0:41
Whoa. The one that's making the squeak noise that you normally do. [imitates squeaking] The- The thing with your mouth [imitates squeaking] Yeah. That's what I heard- [laughs]... and then you showed up [laughs]
• 0:52
It was like he was, uh, announcing himself. Broadcasting. Oh, he came with meat sticks. Oh, landragas. Some from a new company to test. Oh, all right. Oh. Oh, my bad. You may have heard of this place.
• 1:04
It's called Bunsel's. Fairly popular. They're- Not Health's then... or- Not Health's... I don't know. Bunsel's. I don't know. I'm sitting on some Marguez, uh... Don't go into that place if you're hungry. Oh, hell no.
• 1:19
[laughs] Or stoned. Less than five minutes of hungry- Hungry and stoned is no way to work [laughs]... and you're $20 worth of food gone. [laughs] Hungry and stoned is no way to walk through life, son. Yep. All right.
• 1:28
All right. Pulling one out. Oh. Excuse me. My goodness. Hmm. They have girth. Yes. Yes, it is. It's a manly landrager. [laughs] Above average, one would say. That's above, yeah. That's above my average, for sure.
• 1:43
[laughs] Ooh. Ooh. All right. Holy, holy moly schmoly, holy. Whoa. Uh, cripes. I don't know. I guess we're at the top of hill already. We got beef, might as well have the beer. Right?
• 1:56
Well, I think it's dueling beer today because- Whatever... we got a couple different beers, but we'll- Hmm? What? We'll, we'll go. Oh. Tony doesn't have a beer yet.
• 2:06
You know, it seems like we just did this, like, not that long ago- [laughs]... at 4:00 AM in the AM. Oh, I, I thought you meant the beer. No, I... No, no. This, I don't know about this beer. You get it.
• 2:17
You, so you- Wow... I'm talking about doing this show thing. Oh. Oh, that was in the spirit world, man. [laughs] You didn't see us or hear us until you hit the- Well, I-... until you publish it.
• 2:27
I'm telling you what, I heard us 'cause I mixed down the first hour today, and it was surprisingly- Audible?... not bad. Hey. I was like, "Wow, this almost sounds like we know what we're doing." What's... What?
• 2:39
Why is Tony throwing his pipe on the floor? Mine. No, it's his knife. What's that noise? Oh, it's his knife. Noise? That's not a knife. It's his knife. That's not a knife. That's not a knife. Yeah.
• 2:46
You want me to get the Jesus out? I have to go in the other room. [laughs] Jesus. A Jesus knife. My Jesus knife. That- No, it- Two hours... that's like a half knife. Two hours and five minutes. Oh, dude.
• 2:58
Mine's then a quarter. Two, huh, of your spikiness? Hmm. Tony had an emergency call. Emergency IT call. Mm-hmm. Beep, beep, beep. IT call. Which I'll be returning to [laughs] after this.
• 3:12
Well- But all, but all the, all your brewing needs will be addressed at some point in time. This is a good landrager, by the way. It is. Pardon me. I'm popping my muscle. Smoke, it's kinda smoky. Yeah.
• 3:26
It actually says it's smoked [laughs] landrager right on the bag, so. [laughs] Man, go figure. No, Bunsel's is not slush. I wish I had somewhere to put it. Except I didn't know. I don't wanna put it in my pocket.
• 3:36
I'm gonna hang onto it. [clears throat] They're only open till, like, 5:00. Ooh, that's what we- Wednesday... that's what we put this shelf here for. There you go. Landrager shelf. You bet. There we go.
• 3:45
That's what that's for. Yeah, that's the plan. Uh, it's- It doesn't have the ties, so you can hang it over a- Right... a frame for it to leak its juices- Hmm... on the other things underneath it. Pretty good though.
• 3:57
We haven't hung anything yet in the new shop, so we'll have to do that soon. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Maybe just even out in the... 'Cause where the frames are now is kind of in the open public area. Mm-hmm.
• 4:09
Back to, uh, this past weekend because- Yes... I did mix down the first hour. It is pretty good, and I am gonna post it probably before you hear this particular show, perhaps yesterday. And, uh, we got...
• 4:21
So in the first hour, we had nine interviews. All right. And it was around 34 minutes of people yapping between people moving in and moving out and- Cool... this and that.
• 4:33
And, uh, I think at some point I'm just gonna put up, like, the entire thing. Mm-hmm. Because even though there's a bunch of just inaudible stuff, there's some funny shit in there [laughs] that- No shit.
• 4:44
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So I, it, so this way- I was like, "Hey, it's a two-hour burn if you had"- Yeah. Mm-hmm. This way it's all of the people that were in the interviews.
• 4:50
We'll do those first, and then maybe we'll get the full two-hour one down the road. Just say, "Here you go. If you really wanna kill yourself, why don't you just check this out?" "Hey, were you up here?
• 5:00
Do you wanna kinda hear if you were in the peanut gallery?" [laughs] Yes. Ta-da. Yeah. "Hey, holy cow. Holy cow. Pushing the button now." Oh, man. "Holy cow. Pushing the button now.
• 5:09
Hey, hey, hey, hey, radio listener, who do we have on the line?" Hey, guys. How are you? It's Chewy. Hi, Chewy. Boy, you're on time today too. We were- And peppy... and- Crack- Perfect... yeah, Crackerjack time and wang.
• 5:21
Yeah. We were, [laughs] we were, we were running just a little bit late. I'm like, "We gotta get on so Chewy can call in." Oh, no. I thought you guys, I thought you guys had done it for a bit. I was, um, listening to...
• 5:33
Yeah, when I c- when I called in, you guys were talking about muffin rivers west. You up to your podcast?
• 5:38
Well, so we did, uh, a bonus checkpoint this year from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM up on top of the Reservoir Park Hill, which you may remember having done the race before. So we set up all of- Yep...
• 5:49
our podcasting gear up there, and we, we interviewed some folks basically.
• 5:53
We asked them a couple questions, and then we had them ask each other a question that came out of what we're now referring to as the, uh- The cranium or the head of knowledge The, yes It's a big glass bowl thing with, looks like a head that has- It looks like a mannequin head made- Yeah...
• 6:07
out of glass- Right... that is, you know? There's a bunch of questions Yeah. So we're gonna throw the first one up yesterday, and you can listen to that. It was actually very entertaining. Yeah.
• 6:15
Especially them trying to get- It's, it's always fun with them... it out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because some of the questions were, like, really? What's the most important thing you've done in the last three years?
• 6:26
Dude, I, I had, I, I cut- I, uh- I cut out 350 of them... got out of bed. I don't know. Yeah, exactly. What's the greatest- No, there was-... accomplishment in your life?
• 6:33
Dude, there was a total fucking escape valve on every one of those. Mm-hmm. That was, what dip- what dipshit came up with that question? Me. [laughs] It was me.
• 6:42
Well, we- Me, me, me, me [laughs] I'll, I'll, I will, I will die on that hill- He's shocking... on that one. We were, um, thrown under the bus, so JK found a plethora of questions. It was great.
• 6:52
I wish we would've gotten through more of them, because there was some good ones in there. Oh, they're still there, as long as the head's still around here, right?
• 6:57
The head's, uh, right on- No, or this whole hippie- It's right on the floor. Oh, hey, we can take a, we can do it right now. Or this whole hippie book from 1978.
• 7:02
Chewy, Chewy, I'm, yeah, I'm gonna have to ask you a question, if the head is still here. Oh, my God. Oh. It's wrapped in its towel. Oh, it's... Well, it's just wrapped in simpli- slippery plastic.
• 7:12
I'm gonna, I'm gonna... What? Greg, watch, watch how I avoid this question. Hey, can I open my beer now? Yes.
• 7:17
Oh, yeah, we've already kinda, I don't know, JK already top of the hill-ed us, but what's wrong with this thing? Oh, no. I think I'm gonna... I haven't. All right. There we go. Okay, here we go. All right.
• 7:25
I'm joining in. So- I'm gonna screw it in... oh, wait, I can't. I have, I have, oh, I have no fingernail left. I, I, or I worked in Art's Festival Beer Gardens for a day. I have nothing left. Here we go.
• 7:36
Don't you get one of those fancy things the girls- Yeah, the tools, man... carry around in their back pocket, the tool? Yes. A narcon. After, after two and a half hours of doing it without it, we got one. [laughs] Okay.
• 7:45
So are, are we explaining to everybody what this is? What, what- Like, I, this is a charity... you're drinking the abomination you're drinking? Yeah. What... Yeah, the...
• 7:51
[laughs] So my son, who has celiac, can't drink beer, obviously, un- unless it's a gluten-free beer. Um, so he has this.
• 8:00
[laughs] He's looking at cultures and stuff, and one of the ones he found is, there is a Mountain Dew hard seltzer. Yeah. They have four flavors. There's a- Yeah, I heard about that going around.
• 8:09
[laughs] Well, here's the best part. We're sitting in Decorah. This is the best part. They have it in Cedar Rapids, or they have it in way the fuck up in, like, up by Walker, Minnesota. There's nothing in between.
• 8:20
There's nowhere in between there that you can get it. So it just so happened that my neighbors were up in Walker, so they picked me up three 12-packs.
• 8:28
So I'm going to, you are gonna get the first sip of a, an original Mountain Dew hard cider, and I don't like Mountain Dew. So this is- Oof... really gonna be interesting. I hate Mountain Dew. Here we go.
• 8:37
[laughs] Uh, I... So are they test marketing it in those little places, or, uh... Uh, it, it's a limited edition, I suppose, like they do with all the... Oh, that wasn't half bad.
• 8:49
[laughs] Oh, these are all questions that we've... The... JK's pulling questions out of the head here. These are all questions that were asked during the- I was calling it 50 Cent [laughs] Well, why didn't you...
• 8:56
Oh, God, I tried to mix them, and now I gotta go- Tell, tell people the-... all the way to the fucking bottom, man... oh, this one we didn't get. All right. We're gonna ask Chewy. Here we go.
• 9:03
Just pretend you're at the top. Wait. Let's go. You're at top of the hill. You're looking, waiting for- All right... waiting for the sunset. This is a good one. I like this one.
• 9:10
Chewy, what is the one opportunity- All right... you believe you missed out on when you were younger? Vegan rock band. [laughs] Vegan, vegan rock bands? [laughs] Bless your... Yeah, I mean- Yeah. Being in, being...
• 9:24
Yeah, a vegan rock, it was a vegan rock band, yes. Vegan rock. So being in a rock band. So- Be- being in a vegan rock band. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. I meant- Did you ever, did you play any instruments when you were a ute?
• 9:34
Ha, ha, ha, ha. Trombone. Answer it correctly. Trom- trombone. [laughs] Skin flute. Skin. Yeah. Right on. Also- Yeah, I played the trombone... okay, here, here, I love this one. I wanted somebody to get this.
• 9:47
How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? Ooh. Yeah. Dude, I shit you not. Um. There were a couple of fucking gems in this shit. Like- Yeah, that's a really good one. I don't know...
• 10:01
do you feel as old as you look, or- I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say- It's impossible... I'm gonna say 50. That's a good age. I wish I were 50 again. I turn 50- I'll put a line... I turn 50 in one month.
• 10:14
You turned 50 in one month from now? Yep. [laughs] 9/9/72, babies. All right. I'm an old soul. I'm gonna be a, I'm, I'm gonna be a wee older than that in two weeks. All right. Oh, shit. Me- This is a big one...
• 10:29
I got three weeks. Hey, if you had a friend who spoke to you in the same way that you speak to yourself, how long would you allow this person to be your friend? [laughs] [laughs] That's really great.
• 10:40
I wish you would've got some... Oh, that was a good one. No shit, man. I'm telling you. Dude, I, I cut out fucking 350 of these motherfuckers. I don't know what... [laughs] That's a fantastic one, too. I know.
• 10:52
[laughs] Oh, no. All right. Put this on the wall. And you can't, you... First of all, you can't ask these questions at 4:00 in the morning. Hell yeah, we did. We sure as hell did. No.
• 11:01
I mean, 2:00 after they've been drinking a lot, sure, but by 4:00, no. They're, they're just gonna sit there and stare off into space. That was- That's a good point. That didn't work.
• 11:08
Well, listen to the, listen to the first hour, 'cause there was about 34 minutes of people making answers and talking and whatever. It was a... It actually turned out way better than I was expecting.
• 11:19
This one for, is for you, Chewy. Cool. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna answer it for you. [laughs] If you left this life tomorrow, how would you be remembered? Shithead.
• 11:30
[laughs] That's a- I didn't type that part in, I tell you. Come on, now. No, I just... But you can answer it yourself- Listen, I, all right... 'cause that is a great question. Put that in the hopper, too.
• 11:38
I think, I think we've got enough questions for now. For the- Yeah. Oh, yeah. Huh, oh, that's a good one, too. I, I like it, though. Yeah. I do like, I do like both of those, though.
• 11:45
There's a shitload in here, and- Yeah, we could do a bunch of shit. Yes. We'll just keep this thing going one, one or two questions- I'll just... Yes... per guest till, till we run out of questions. What a show.
• 11:55
What a show. Or somebody wants- Good call. That's a great idea. Or somebody wants the head back. It is on loan. Yeah. Maybe we could get a fishbowl. I was calling it fish head.
• 12:04
Ooh, I like that Fish heads, fish heads Exactly Roly-poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, eat 'em up, yum All right, Chewy [laughs] I, I know that you were, you were here for at least one River West 24.
• 12:16
[laughs] What do you remember about your time when you came here and 24'd the shit out of this town? So I have to assume it's changed quite a bit since I was there. I- I mean, think about it...
• 12:25
don't really think so Um, when we were there, we did it, we stayed at Tony's old place. We did it on, on- Cargo bikes... uh, cargo bikes. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, it was, it was...
• 12:38
Yeah, you know, you guys had impressed me at how hard you were racing and you were placing and all that kind of stuff, and we really didn't race that hard. That being said, I thought it was a lot of fun.
• 12:46
I had a good time. I, uh, I, I thought some of the, some of the bonus tasks were rather odd, but at the same time they were still kinda cool. It's an artsy part of town, but- Yeah... it all made sense. Um,
• 12:57
um, I, you know, that's the kind of riding I like to do. I lo- I did, what, four laps by myself, like in the middle of the night- Got a tattoo... and that's when I like riding the best.
• 13:05
So yeah, I mean, my experience with it was fun. I just don't think it's the same now after pandemic and everything else. I think it's changed quite a bit. Eh, eh, it- I, I think this year it was back to that...
• 13:13
was pretty much the same this year It was pretty back to normal, yeah.
• 13:15
And, and also this year instead of the normal 24 bonus checkpoints, they actually had 48, so there was a lot of activity, and we had 1,100 riders- Oh, cool...
• 13:25
1,100 riders and e- and almost 2,000 participants with volunteers and, and- And people just riding... yeah, and all sorts of... Yeah, because this year you di- That's fantastic...
• 13:34
well, you didn't have to actually be an entrant this year to do the bonus checkpoints. You could just show up on your feet or your rollerblades- And just do it and have fun...
• 13:41
and just do a checkpoint and, and- Oh, get a card... participate in the neighborhood. You wanted to get your face painted? Ta-da. Yeah, right? There you go. Like- You wanna be on a podcast? Ta-da. Ta-da.
• 13:51
There was a- And, and, and they did do it- Yeah, well, come on... which is to us, and all, and they, and they did do, they did do the, um, they did do the tattoo, right? Oh, yes. Of course.
• 13:58
Me and my- I got my first tattoo ever, Chewy. Ever. In my house. In my house. In, in his house. There it is. There it is. That's even cool. Yeah, I, I know- Oh, take a picture of that, Tony...
• 14:09
I know I was there, and I feel bad 'cause it looks really chunky with the color. And mo- don't get the nipple in that Yeah, the nipple and the hairs Oh, the nipple's getting in there... the nipple hairs. Ah. No. Oh. Oh.
• 14:17
No. Wait. No. There. That sounds painful, and I get far too much of it. You- Oh. Well, I, yeah, on the clavicle that is numb. I, [laughs] I have this, I have a plate and seven screws in here, and nothing...
• 14:29
I, I can't feel anything in my right shoulder, so that's where I got my tat- first tattoo. Per- And-... perfect spot for it. [laughs] I'm like, I barely feel anything here anyways. Right.
• 14:37
When it was, uh, all said and done- [laughs]...
• 14:39
Chewy, when it was all said and done, the founder's party was at my house, and then everyone got to come that were founders or didn't have a chance that were volunteers and get tattooed as well. So my wife- Cheers...
• 14:50
got a tattoo. My wife got the River West 24 tattoo, and guess who else did? Cleon. Cleon. No. [laughs] No. Well, that was a- Katie... awesome, perfect guess. Oh, really? What, next neighbor? Neighbor Katie got it.
• 15:05
All right. Here's the deal with, uh, this year. We, because we did the bonus checkpoint, we are now all VIPs for next year, meaning- I can stand in line outside of- We can...
• 15:13
Well, just that I have to do the race next year, and I always said if I did it for the fifth year of actual racing, I'd have to get the tattoo, so. Whoa. I hope it's a good one next year.
• 15:22
I might have to, I might have to throw down. Balsacktattoo.com.
• 15:27
Hey, I'll admit mine is, the one that I get is not all that great, and if you don't have the other one to go with it, it looks w- everybody looks at it and goes, "What the fuck is that?" Which one is yours?
• 15:34
It's not the mustache, is it? Uh, no. Van Halen? Well, it's the, um... Yeah, it's kind of the, it's kind of the, the in the water, so it's, um, it's, uh, R- RW24, and then it's reflected on the other side.
• 15:46
Oh, I love that one. Tony? How's that one? Oh, yeah. Oh, mine, mine looks like crap. Yeah, it looks like a finial. Mine looks like crap. Hmm. Well, it, uh, the, the- Now, now you're making me worried.
• 15:56
Maybe I'll get- No, the, no, the, it's like the sun sail from Tron. Do, da, da, doo, da, da, da, da, da, da, doo. Wendy Carlos. I'll send you yours. I'll send you mine. [laughs] I mean, Walter Carlos. I'm not sure.
• 16:09
All right. I gotta ask you this because it just ended. Uh, what, what, what reports did you get out of the RAGB? Did you hear from anybody who did it? You know, I haven't yet.
• 16:18
I'm probably gonna go out with a couple tomorrow night. Um, I know they had a couple of hard days of rain at the beginning.
• 16:24
Um, uh, I, you know, we did the podcast where we talked to, uh, Kayla and Jeremy, who've done a bunch, and that's who I'm gonna go riding with tomorrow night.
• 16:33
I did get a couple of texts and chat, and Snapchats from Kayla, uh, basically saying their bus was breaking down every, every 10 miles and- Ooh... having a rough day with getting started. Then I didn't hear much after.
• 16:44
I think, so I think things settled down quite a bit for them, so I think they had fun. Um, Jeremy's group I heard nothing from. He, he doesn't really say much until it's over with.
• 16:52
So I think, I think I'm gonna bring those two back in, in the studio and do a podcast with those guys again and see how it went. Nice.
• 16:58
Um, because next year, and you guys need to think about this, and, uh, one of the guys I talked to that had a whole bunch of stories to tell was, uh, um, the guy that also rides an e-gravel bike, but he did not, he did not ride an e-gravel bike, and everybody on RAGBRAI said he rides faster now, and he was on a, just a regular road bike.
• 17:16
So now I get even more fucking evidence against me. See? It's like- But that being said, [laughs] that being said, I'm off track here.
• 17:23
Um, uh, Bradberg, one of our guys we do, in, in studio with, and a couple of other people want to go do the first four days, which works out perfect for all of us that have to go back to Decorah for, um, uh, for, uh, uh, Nordic Fest.
• 17:37
Uh, next year's their 50th anniversary of it, and there's, and there's rumors out that it's gonna be the original route, which is really long and it goes diagonal. It goes from Sioux City to Davenport, I think. Oh, ooh.
• 17:49
Um, there's people been looking at the routes. Yeah. So, um, that's- Well, that-... a possibility. So you just might wanna think- Yeah, so the-... about coming along for a few days... right.
• 17:57
So the, the four-day thing works out pretty well if you're gonna do the 24 because you can go there and do four good solid days of longer rides, and then have a rest day or two, and then come and do the 24, and you'll be all pumped like- Be primed Like, like, oh no, wait, wait, listen to me.
• 18:12
The machine is pumped and primed. I'm already all up Yeah, you, you- I only have to do four miles? That's fine. In a circle? That's fine By the fourth day you should be,
• 18:22
by the fourth day you should be somewhere on the east side of the state and still kind of in the middle though, so it shouldn't be a horrible b- drive back to Milwaukee, I wouldn't think. No. So, yeah- Oh, no...
• 18:33
we'll have to think about. We, a- as it goes, we'll think about it more. But, but like, but as far as any stories about actual on the ride, I don't have anything just yet.
• 18:40
I, um, will probably do a podcast with those three again just to, uh, kind of, 'cause [laughs] I'm not kidding you, when we got done with that podcast and we tried to keep...
• 18:50
We went to an hour, I think, if I remember right. Yeah. And they were, and they were mad at me because we stopped. [laughs] Because they had so many...
• 18:55
And I think they, I think they, I sort of got they left at like 3:00 in the morning. Mm. They were just, they were just yak, yak, yak, yak, yak. Yeah. They couldn't stop.
• 19:02
And then, and then I started telling them, you know, I had 14 years of stories too, and mine are rather different than theirs. So, um, and that's what happens with people when you get a bunch together.
• 19:10
The RAGBRAI stories start, and they just never end. No- It's kind of funny, actually... Chewy, Chewy, do you wanna know what my- Yep... memory of you doing the River West 24 with us was? What's that?
• 19:21
You served me my first cup of cold brewed coffee. Whoa. Ever. I did what? You had brought me my first cup of cold brewed coffee. Really? I had never- That was your first one?
• 19:34
I had never had it before you served it to me, sir. Oh, that's weird. Mm-hmm. I did not know that. And he's had- I thought you would've- And he's had twisted shits ever since there. Like every time. Ooh.
• 19:45
And then, and then we went to McBob's- Right... before they got bad, when you guys went home. I'm just saying, everything's good back then. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's right, that's right. We went to...
• 19:52
Yeah, I, I, you know, I, I just now, now that I've found out you can make all kinds of different booze with cold brewed coffee, I'm even drink more of it now today. We're just- Mm, whiskey and cold brewed coffee.
• 20:02
That does sound delicious. So on the RAG- That's good... on the RAGBRAI theme, uh, JK ran into a guy who j- a guy- A guy... who just finished it. Yeah. I think his name is Mike N- Neubauer? Something like that.
• 20:15
Something like that. Yeah. He ran into him at the local- Another Mike. A Mike, a Mike runs into another Mike, so we are one... at the local club. Ran into him at the club.
• 20:20
He may be on this very show next week or sometime- Yeah, he's a very-... not too far down the road... apparently he, uh, this was his ninth. Did he win the race? Did he win the RAGBRAI race?
• 20:30
No, but he, uh, he was disappointed that he wasn't able to use the bike from eight years prior. This was a new one- Mm... type thing. I don't know. There was a- Type thing. Ooh... there was a little- Ooh...
• 20:43
there's a lot of carpet fiber, but it's like carpet fiber, uh- This isn't a stupid idea... carpet fiber al- aluminium hybrid. All right.
• 20:52
So he's not completely- There's an- He's not completely on the carpet fiber- Chewy, here's an idea.
• 20:57
I think the last time I actually did the actual- I was trying to make fun of him, but he, he kept say, like being like, "No, it's not completely carbon fiber." And I'm like, "All right, yeah, just..." Eh.
• 21:06
I'm just, hey, I'm just... I, I didn't even introduce the idea of the podcast at this point. I was just talking with him. [laughs] I'm like, "If you can take my- [laughs]...
• 21:15
[laughs] if you can take my little gentle barbs [laughs] you'll be okay." Oh, here's an idea which I think isn't a bad one.
• 21:22
Uh, I think the last time I actually did the RAGBRAI, not just go ride around Iowa while RAGBRAI's going on, which we've done several times since, was 1995. Wow. And I have a 1995 Teasdale road bike, which I rode- Hey...
• 21:36
on RAGBRAI. Really? Maybe we should bring that thing back out again. Mm, blast from the past. I don't think I can fit bigger than 25s on it, though, and I, I, I'm more of a 40- Lord Teasdale... I'm more of a 45 guy now.
• 21:49
I don't know if I- [laughs] Nice. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. Yeah, I remember doing these- Oh, that's a single speed, of course... doing... Oh, yeah, obviously.
• 22:01
Well, doing the anti-RAGBRAI- What did you say?... with you and Captain and stuff was awesome. We'd go, you know, the opposite direction- I had, yeah, I, I had mentioned that to the-...
• 22:08
or go camping or blah, blah, blah. Yeah.
• 22:10
Well, Captain was always so hilarious because we'd ride along and he'd go, "Now, if we take a right here and go five miles down this road and then two miles on a gravel road, we come to this little bar, and then there's these little old ladies making dollar loose meat sandwiches in the back."
• 22:22
And everything he said was exactly right. You know, there's a massive tire sitting on top of it. So you have a machine and Jesus. But he knew every, every little sp- stop and every little...
• 22:30
And quite honestly, most of the time they're more fun to go to those than it was the RAGBRAI. For sure. No, absolutely. Well, yeah, that was cool. For sure.
• 22:35
Well, yeah, that would be like- You can't have 10,000 people and not, you know-... like the, uh, Marcy at, uh, Holler House. Mm. Going like, "Uh..." Oh, boom.
• 22:43
[laughs] Then you go up there and she's like all dressed up to the nines. I'm like, "What the fuck?" She's like, "I have to go to a goddamn funeral." [laughs] Nice. 'Cause we were out there early.
• 22:57
I was- And it's like, "Ugh." I was with Sob and Bear and, and I think I've told you guys this before. Bear got RAGBRAI literally on a divorce. He got, he got the right to go on RAGBRAI.
• 23:08
So we finally took him for a ride and we rode like, I think we were riding Charles City to Cedar Falls or something like that, or Cedar Rapids maybe.
• 23:15
And, um, we didn't make it, and then we were turned around and we were riding back. And so many people were like, "What are you guys doing?" We go, "We're on RAGBRAI." They go, "Oh, you're never gonna catch up.
• 23:23
You're going the wrong way." [laughs] You don't own me. All right. [laughs] I'm gonna have to leave here in a few minutes 'cause I have to go play hockey, but I do have news for you guys. Uh-oh.
• 23:36
About, gonna speak your way. Are you at all- You pregnant?... coming over? Well, I've got a bike, two bikes ready to come over, so- Oh, Rabbit died... I am, I am about- Did you guys fuck me?
• 23:44
I'm about 98.6% right now, for sure. So I need to- Okay... I need to have a, I need a space in your yard for my tent, and, um, good to go. Yep, you got that.
• 23:55
And Andy Woods w- your, Andy Woods is gonna be sharing a tent space with you possibly. He's coming down from Surly. Um, um, I haven't talked to Zito.
• 24:03
Uh, there's a buddy of ours from Australia that's supposed to be coming out, but I- Or Minneapolis... he was gonna catch up with John Flick. Oh, yeah, well, Zito, they're also gonna go walking.
• 24:11
I haven't heard which way he's going yet, so I don't know. But I know he's probably gonna be in town- For the race. So he'll be there. We're at, like, about 165 riders that we know of so far.
• 24:21
Um [sighs], we've got, you know, we've got Grizzly Cooler and Top Of The Glide Beer coming. Um- Mm-hmm... I got a State Conqueror to give away to somebody. Mosaic. Mosaic. Yeah. There is, there seems to be a pseudo Sue.
• 24:34
Oh, yeah. You like that? Oh, I do. Yeah. Um, you know, we, we didn't even get to the other beer yet. I did that. Let's get to the other beer. Top of the [bottles rattling] Second Hill.
• 24:45
Oh, you know, you know who also sponsored it? Second Hill. Who else is sponsoring it? Hey, guess who else is sponsoring it? Card- Cardboard Robot. Oh, I love those guys. Nice. Yeah. Oh. I love that, huh? That was cool.
• 24:55
So Card... Uh, uh, so Cardboard Robot is in the old, uh, the old Decorah Bicycle location on Water Street, right? Mm-hmm. That's awesome. Right. And, and we're gonna tell him next week that he's sponsoring.
• 25:09
Yeah [laughs]. [laughs] What do we do? Ooh, Deak or, Deak or Sav? Uh, Sav. Yes. [laughs] Yes, yes. All right. Here's, here's another thing. No, no. Here's... Okay. No, no, no. We...
• 25:20
You, you won't see, you won't see Deak that weekend anywhere. He will have his head buried in the sand someplace. He wants nothing to do with any of the shenanigans or the way it's organized or how it is at all.
• 25:31
A plausible deniability kind of thing? It's right there. Oh. So, okay. Yeah. Here's a Deak question. Jesus Christ. So here's a Deak question for you. Um- Oh, wait. You pull it out of the hat...
• 25:40
'cause he did, real quick, Gunner, uh, asked me if he could take m- a fork from a Moonlander that's a symmetrical fork, same axle to crown, uh, same rake, and replace his offset
• 25:56
fork and wheel with a symmetrical fork and wheel. And Deak said, "No, it's gonna handle real goofy." And I don't know if he didn't understand- No, it's not... No, it's not.
• 26:04
But I don't know if he didn't understand that, that maybe he thought he was gonna put the offset wheel on the symmetrical fork or what.
• 26:10
But the, the, the axle, the crown, and the f- the freaking rake, uh, they're all different. Another... No, I... That was my question to Gunner, too. And I'm not sure who wasn't understanding.
• 26:20
But no, you can't put that... You, you have to put a, a symmetrical wheel on a symmetrical fork. You can't put the offset wheel- Well, of course. Absolutely... on a symmetrical fork and it won't, it won't.
• 26:26
Which he, which Gunner has several. No, that was Gunner. He has several of them. And, yeah. And, and I've got one here, too, but I, but I, I don't know. You know, I'm not sure a Moonlander fork would ride right. Yeah.
• 26:36
It, it, it's a- The Moonlander is-... it's exactly the same axle to crown. It's exactly the same rake. Oh, it is. Okay. There's no reason why it wouldn't be any different. Yeah, but it'd be fine.
• 26:44
Yeah, it'd be perfect because it's one of the old ones. And then, and then, and then actually... Yeah, and then you... Well, yeah. It's, it's a white one like mine. And then, and actually it's a, it's a buddy of mine's.
• 26:51
I sold it to him. That bike originally was one of the original Trek, or not Trek, one of the original Surly Guys' bike from the cities.
• 26:58
But the cool thing about that is by putting that, that Moonlander fork in the front, now you can put a five-inch wide tire on it, too. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So, so, so, uh- Well, he's...
• 27:06
Yeah, he's trying to build something for Single Speed USA that, you know, doesn't cost him an arm and a leg. Right, yeah. And whatever, whatever. Mm. Yeah. Yeah. I, I've, I've been looking at gear setup for him.
• 27:14
I've got some gears that he's got, I gotta put it on his bike next weekend, just see if that'll work, too. So he's got... But yeah, that's, that's, I think there was a misunderstanding what was going on because- Yeah...
• 27:23
it's gonna be a symmetrical fork with a symmetrical wheel. He'll be fine. Right. He'll cruise right along. That's what I'm saying. He'll be happy with it. So what, what's your recommended gearing for, like, uh,
• 27:32
Decorah Hills on your single speed? Are you riding a 26 inch, 27.5- No... 29er? What are you riding? Single speed, what are you doing? I'm riding... I don't know what I'm gonna ride.
• 27:41
I think I'm gonna, I think I'm just gonna ride, like, uh, the one I go to almost every race with.
• 27:45
I have a, I have a, um, Karate Monkey, which is a 29, and it's my coupled frame, and I think I have a 30 or 20 or 20, or an 18 or 20 on it. But I'm gonna walk a few hills. Yeah. You know, I'm, I'm an old man.
• 27:59
Well, I'm gonna walk every hill. But I mean, that- Well, no, I did, I did the 24- Yeah... with my Surly Low Side. JK got his Low Side going after a nine-month hiatus- Oh, cool. Oh, cool... for some reason [laughs]. Yeah.
• 28:10
Oh, yeah. It had a, oh, it had a flat tire. A buddy bike. Wait, it had a flat tire. Oh. Oh, yeah. And, oh, by the by- A buddy bike...
• 28:13
oh, by, by the by, when I was about to take it out- A buddy bike, I also call the, uh, Minneapolis frame... I re-flatted somehow. Oh, boy. I know. But is, it is just a fun- All right, Chewy... groovy ride.
• 28:24
Go play hockey. Uh, I have to go play hockey. Good talking to you guys. We'll talk to you- Watch your five hole. [laughs] Good hearing from you, man. [laughs] All right. Peace. Okay. I'd like to you guys. Bye. See ya.
• 28:36
Chewy, everybody. Chewy. Chewy. Chewy. I don't know. Chewy. Chewy. Okay. Okay. So Single Speed USA is coming up in Decorah there. That's why I was training.
• 28:48
What, what they just go ahead and- That's why I was training on the 24... August 20th, Single Speed USA, Decorah, Iowa. USA, obviously. I was training on the 24 for that, and I realized hell fucking no I can do...
• 29:02
[laughs] I could barely do it. No. Well, I, I was- Well, of course... I, I was encumbered. I, no, I was on, like, a luxury bike on that one. Like, I just had shit, like, yeah, relaxing, groovy stuff.
• 29:14
Yeah, but then, you know, part of single speeding is not all about riding every single hill you can ride. It's about just getting out there and being groovy. Yeah, but fuck... I know. It's about simplisticities.
• 29:22
No, there, no, there, uh, simple layers. That's very, it's hard. Many steps and columns. I, I... And I said this- It was most tranquil... I, yeah [laughs]. You, you're not wrong.
• 29:33
One of these years of the 24, I'm actually gonna dial in, then I'll be like, "Yes, I had the most enjoyable 24 ever." Every, I, I have regrets every goddamn year, every year.
• 29:49
And this year is none different. I've had a few. Yeah. I have a, he has. And once more, I thumb my nose at you. Well, I mean, it's all right. There's always another year.
• 30:02
Well, it's not like it's gonna go away anytime real soon, but here's the thing about- Well, no wonder...
• 30:05
I'll go, yeah, shout out to people, uh, uh, the, our listener that the, uh, powers that be, the founders as it were, that Tony alluded to earlier are...
• 30:15
I'm not saying they're getting long in the tooth, but they are getting long- Mm-hmm... in the we've-done-this-for-a-long-time thing, and they are actively looking for- Right...
• 30:23
people to come in and start to take over some of the roles of people who've been doing this for 15 plus years And, uh, if, if you're interested in being part of basically the best thing that happens in cycling in the United States 'Merica- Whoa...
• 30:38
you probably wanna come and be part of the 24. Exactly. Go to riverwest24.com. And, and it's no s- Or full spectrum- It's no small feat, I gotta say.
• 30:46
When, you know, when we decided- We get, we get to be a conduit, right?
• 30:49
And- When we decided to do this, uh, this bonus checkpoint, yeah, it's two hours up there, but it's also, you know, 20 hours of planning and cutting and making- Hours set up and then finishing up and- Oh, yeah.
• 30:58
We had to figure out how to power everything without AC, and, uh, JK did a great job of chopping up questions and- [laughs]... finding a head to plug shit in.
• 31:08
I just talked to people and gave them s- Well- I, I sho- I, I found questions, chopped them up into little bite-sized forms, and then found a glass head to put them all into. And I- And you still have all your fingers...
• 31:19
and also props to JK for putting both everydaycycles.com and fullspectrumcycling.com- Well, that worked out. That, that worked out-... right on the page...
• 31:26
pretty goddamn funny 'cause it does look like if you wanted to, like, gum it to yourself, you'd be onto it. Well, maybe we should do that next year for- Well, there's a shitlo- [laughs] I don't think that'd go over well.
• 31:35
How about Remy taking first wearing that outfit? Was he first in- Solo men's. What? Oh, the gold? Yeah. G- g- g- g- gold, all the way. Well, well, you guys were, uh- And, uh, Clari- and Clarisaurus.
• 31:46
And Clarisaurus was number one- Again... well, I mean- She, uh... But he- I didn't, I didn't know- I asked him during our podcast, 'cause before he went on, before he participated, I'm like, "So, that thing warm?"
• 32:00
He's like, "This is the worst thing you could possibly wear." He's like- It-... "It's hot in the sun and cold at night." It had, it had many, many, uh, open areas for wind and whatnot to blast through.
• 32:11
He's an incredibly great human being. Yeah, he was, he was good on the show. He flew back to Boston now, I believe, and he now leads rides out there. Um, I saw him later that day, uh, down at Brady Street Festival. Nice.
• 32:23
[laughs] And there were, like, people going like, "Oh, my God. What is this?" And I'm like, "Um, what?" I talked- That's fabulous... I'm like, "I talked to-" That's actually fabulous.
• 32:34
I, I was like, "I talked to him at 4:30 this morning on a podcast on the top of the hill." Yeah. "What the hell are you guys, like, looking at?" No, no. What are you doing? Yeah, exactly. Okay. Way cool.
• 32:42
Well, well, it's Brady Street. You have to- Did you just get out of bed at 11 o'clock? Yeah, no shit. There was a bunch of shit happening before that. [groans] Exactly. Oh, look at- You know-...
• 32:48
Tony wearing his Coach Flambeau bunny hideout shirt, man... that's right. Flambeau. Now, where's my phone? Okay. Where's my phone? Also, it's time for us to be done with this sh- I think so... shit fuckery.
• 32:57
Next year do the Riverwest 24 and don't- Yeah. And, and also- Yeah, you can-... A, volunteer, B, try to be part of it. Yep. Thank you very much. Have a nice day. [upbeat music] Now, now, now, now.
• 33:08
  [upbeat music]
