- 0:00This is Overtime, a weekly moment of off the Cup commentary on everything from
- 0:05sports and politics to observations about everyday life from NFL all Pro curl Lee.
- 0:12Welcome to Overtime. Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is curl Lee and
- 0:17with let's talk and this is the overtime segment. And today I want to
- 0:27address We've been talking about nutrition and training and how vital those things are to
- 0:38young athletes, and we had a gentleman in to speak about it and who
- 0:48was very knowledgeable. Andrew was you know, he was very again, very
- 0:55knowledgeable about the food intake and all those kind of things. But what I
- 1:00want to address in this is basically, how do you or not how do
- 1:10you? But why wouldn't we understand the importance of eating and and and understanding
- 1:19like who who is that person that you want to trust your kid with in
- 1:23the training aspect of it. Nutrition is something that you you have to pretty
- 1:30much do on your own, and as a parent, you're probably gonna have
- 1:33to do some research to to kind of figure that out and and understand exactly
- 1:41what all the different terms and all all those all that information that was put
- 1:44out there. You're gonna have to understand some of that, but there's some
- 1:47simplicity to that just by just doing a little bit of research. But the
- 1:53training aspect, you know, training like for me to go out and train
- 1:59a defensive back is one thing, because that's a skill set, or somebody
- 2:05going out training the quarterback, that's a skill set. But training, you
- 2:10know, sports, training specifically to participate in a sports is a highly unique
- 2:21thing and it and to me, I think it requires an educational background that
- 2:30I don't know if everybody everybody has that. You know, not saying that
- 2:38that doesn't make you you're not a trainer. I'm just saying that, you
- 2:43know, when you when you look at somebody with twenty five years of experience,
- 2:49you know with you know studies and you know biomedical science and all those
- 2:55kind of stuff, all that type of stuff, I think you know when
- 2:58you when you're dealing with someone like that, I think you're there's a comfort
- 3:01level in trust and trusting in what he knows. And again sometimes understanding what
- 3:10he knows or what that person would know is challenging because we don't know.
- 3:19I remember I remember training all the time when I was a kid, talking
- 3:28about wanting to play at the next level. I didn't play any more games
- 3:35than we had on a schedule. I was played three sports, so I
- 3:42never was sitting around then when school was out, I was always training to
- 3:47be in shape. And I think I think the question that I would ask
- 3:54is how how would an athlete, high school athlete ever be out of shape?
- 4:02M I don't know if there's a if there's a time for you to
- 4:06be out of shape. Because let's just assuming that you're playing one sport and
- 4:11you're you're you're want to master one sport. Okay, that's fair. But
- 4:17in the when that sport's done, what are you doing? What is the
- 4:23work that you're putting in, Because if you're not putting in any work,
- 4:30then you're not getting the you're not getting the most out of who you are
- 4:35or what you could be. I know that it's it's it's difficult to to
- 4:44consume yourself into you know, two hours three hours after school working out or
- 4:50or or getting up early in the morning before school. I literally practiced or
- 4:57or worked out in the mornings and had football practice in the evening, basketball
- 5:02practice in the evening, track in the evening. Because I did it in
- 5:09the morning, and I was used to that, and I'm just trying to
- 5:17I'm trying to encourage us to understand that sports is more complicated than just being
- 5:27the top quarterback in the in the conference, or the top quarterback in the
- 5:32state or something like that. I think the issue is what are you doing
- 5:38with your body? Are you putting in are you putting all the right stuff
- 5:44in it? Because if you want, if you want that D one,
- 5:49if you want to play on Saturday, if you want to play on Sunday,
- 5:57and when you're playing on Saturday, you want thatt D one offer.
- 6:02I think that you have to understand that there is there is more of a
- 6:05commitment to the training aspect of it than there is the participation part of it.
- 6:15You can participate, you can you can play games, you can do
- 6:17these kinds of things and try to get you know better, But what is
- 6:26your what is your what is your goal? Like? What is that my
- 6:29my? I wanted to be the best conditioned person that I could be.
- 6:35I wanted to be the best conditioned person on the team. I don't know
- 6:40if I ever reached that, but what I do know is I was always
- 6:47in the best shape that I thought I could put myself in that I could
- 6:50get to at that moment. And because of that, I had the confidence
- 6:58to I didn't have to worry about conditioning, I didn't have to worry about
- 7:03being tired. I could play at a level, a high level, throughout
- 7:11the whole entire game and see And that's that's part of the problem. Imagine
- 7:15you, you know everybody talks about, you know, all that scout that's
- 7:18going to be at the game. Okay, Imagine yourself being a scout sitting
- 7:23in the bleachers and you're watching some You're watching a kid who can't make it
- 7:30through the first half of a game, whether it be football, basketball,
- 7:33or whatever. You can't make it through the game, even though he's putting
- 7:38out or she's putting out a whole lot of effort. They would love to
- 7:42see you be able to play that whole game and be in shape, because
- 7:46what they would what you think when you see that, when you see somebody
- 7:50in shape, it makes you think, Wow, they they're putting They're willing
- 7:56to put in the work. And the question is if you want this,
- 8:01if you want a sport, if you want to be a D one player,
- 8:05if you want to play on Sunday, or you want to be an
- 8:09NBA star, you want to be something, Why would you like Why would
- 8:15you not put everything that you have in it? What could come before that
- 8:24measure of success? Who could call you and say, hey man, let's
- 8:28go do this, and you say, okay, I'm good, I just
- 8:31won't work out today. Who can do Who would you leave? What would
- 8:35you leave for? See? Because you couldn't. Any of my buddies will
- 8:41tell you that you could not. You could not interfere with my workout like
- 8:46you could not won. You're probably not going to be up until I'm done,
- 8:54But you couldn't convince me of not wanting to be get my get my
- 9:00workout in. There's just no way. There's nothing comes before that today.
- 9:07You could make the case that just about anything could possibly come through it.
- 9:11And my thought process is if you want it, if you truly really,
- 9:18really really want it, then you should really really really go after it.
- 9:26And the only way that you can go after is you got to commit yourself
- 9:28to something that is the most important thing to you. Because I truly do
- 9:37believe that we have more athletes who can be can have huge success in sports
- 9:43in West Virginia. In Kennall County, in South Charleston, in Charleston,
- 9:50in Putnam County. We can have them have that measure of success if we
- 9:56just put our time into it and put the and put the work in.
- 10:01So my challenge is for you today is why not start tomorrow, put the
- 10:07time in and see what you can get. All Right, we're out.
