- 0:31I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 12 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:35I Hate Talking: So our word or phrase of the episode is actually a two part word today at the request of a particular listener that sent us this request on defining exhibition versus exposition, and we have a guest host here today to tell us his interpretation.
- 0:58I Hate Talking: Of one or both of these words.
- 1:00I Hate Talking: So, hello, this is probably like the first and possibly only episode where I'm in here, so uh hi.
- 1:10I Hate Talking: So would you like to tell us what your particular definition of either word is, or you can do both, exposition or exhibition.
- 1:22I Hate Talking: I think expedition means like uh we're close to um the explorer adventure and then I don't know the second one.
- 1:33I Hate Talking: Yeah, so there's actually maybe a third word that we can interpret here, of course, of course, expedition, which I think is what you were getting at, is a journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, scientific research, or war.
- 1:56I Hate Talking: So I basically said that, I literally said like something like adventure or something.
- 2:02I Hate Talking: Exactly, so expedition is an adventure, journey or voyage undertaken by a group of people.
- 2:10I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: So at the request of our listener, there's actually two other words that will define exhibition and exposition, which both have root words that may be helpful in defining those exhibition, which is like an exhibit.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: So did you recently have any particular things that you exhibited as a project?
- 2:38I Hate Talking: Like the zoo or a particular animal that you favor?
- 2:43I Hate Talking: Yucky.
- 2:44I Hate Talking: So tell the audience about your duck exhibit.
- 2:48I Hate Talking: I like duckies because um they're my favorite animal.
- 2:54I Hate Talking: And you created a poster board with different facts and figures about ducks, is that correct?
- 2:59I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 2:59I Hate Talking: And that would be considered an exhibit.
- 3:03I Hate Talking: The other word that we are considering today is exposition, which has the root word of exposite, which may even be familiar to some of our listeners that listened to our very first episodes that included the definition of the word posit, which has a part in the word exposite as well as exposition.
- 3:29I Hate Talking: Uh, yeah, I guess the first episode was pretty good for a first episode.
- 3:37I Hate Talking: Exactly.
- 3:39I Hate Talking: So exposition is a comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory, whereas an exhibition is a public display of works of art or items of interest like ducks that are held in a particular gallery, museum, or fair.
- 3:57I Hate Talking: Did you say you didn't say zoo.
- 4:00I Hate Talking: I did not say zoo, but I think that there could be an exhibition.
- 4:04I Hate Talking: Yeah, ducks can be in a zoo.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: Ducks can be in a zoo and they can be part of an exhibition, and they can be part of an exhibition at a zoo.
- 4:15I Hate Talking: Wait, so a zoo is an expedition did I say it right, expedition, and then there could also be another expedition at the uh zoo.
- 4:27I Hate Talking: I think it is quite possible to use all three of these words in one sentence because an interesting definition of exposition is a large public exhibition of art and trade goods, so you can have an exhibition at an exposition on an expedition.
- 4:48I Hate Talking: Uh, I did not know what you just said, but it sounds very awesome.
- 4:53I Hate Talking: It is very awesome because you could take an expedition to the zoo to see an exposition that consists of different exhibitions.
- 5:03I Hate Talking: It sounds like you use the same word more than once.
- 5:08I Hate Talking: These words do sound very similar, but we are using the word expedition as an adventure, and Exposition as a large public display and exhibition as a public display of works of art or items of interest, OK.
- 5:28I Hate Talking: And those are our two words, nay, 3 words of the episode.
- 5:35I Hate Talking: Wait, nays a word too, I thought, I thought it was just those three words.
- 5:42I Hate Talking: We did 3 words and perhaps in a future episode our word or phrase of the episode could be nay.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: It means no, -- by -- the so spoiler alert, he he.
- 5:54I Hate Talking: And there you have it.
- 5:56I Hate Talking: So now we continue this expedition of an episode.
- 6:01I Hate Talking: So what will we exposit or exhibit?
- 6:05I Hate Talking: I have no idea, but your guest host was super cute.
- 6:11I Hate Talking: Indeed he was.
- 6:13I Hate Talking: And it's interesting because we had actually discussed some of the things that we're going to talk about on this episode just a few short hours ago.
- 6:24I Hate Talking: Oh no, I don't remember what you're talking about.
- 6:27I Hate Talking: I don't know what we're going to talk about and I don't know what you're referencing from the past either.
- 6:33I Hate Talking: So did we talk about this maybe a minute ago?
- 6:36I Hate Talking: I'm like a goldfish.
- 6:40I Hate Talking: Or 1 2nd ago.
- 6:42I Hate Talking: Maybe Indeed we do not.
- 6:46I Hate Talking: OK, I'm not crazy after all.
- 6:50I Hate Talking: Well, that is still yet to be decided.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: However, we are going to be in part talking about the words that people use to describe how long they must wait for something to be done.
- 7:05I Hate Talking: Is it gonna be one second from now or 1 minute, or is that really mean an indefinite period of time that one must wait?
- 7:14I Hate Talking: Oh no, I know where you're going now.
- 7:17I Hate Talking: So, are we just jumping in or do you want to elaborate?
- 7:24I Hate Talking: Yes, I can elaborate.
- 7:27I Hate Talking: So one of the things that I think that perhaps I find frustrating or maybe other people within our audience will empathize with and find frustrating is the inexactness of using turns of phrase to describe how long one must wait.
- 7:49I Hate Talking: So if we or myself ask.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: If we could have something done and the person responds with, yes, in just a second, or yes, in just a minute, that we must Overcome our.
- 8:07I Hate Talking: default assumption that they are talking about a specific period of time and just instead talking about a general indefinite period of time.
- 8:17I Hate Talking: We understand where you're coming from.
- 8:20I Hate Talking: So, this is a complication we have in our house.
- 8:27I Hate Talking: I have a bad habit of saying one minute.
- 8:30I Hate Talking: When I'm talking to someone, or just a second.
- 8:34I Hate Talking: Now, my lovely husband here.
- 8:38I Hate Talking: will count for 1 2nd, and then be like, where is it?
- 8:43I Hate Talking: And I have to, um, I get very frustrated cause I'm saying, no, this is just me saying, hold on, -- I'll get to that -- soon.
- 8:52I Hate Talking: Indeed, and I have a bad habit of interpreting your time estimate, literally, and I don't think that I will interpret the one second as a literal thing.
- 9:05I Hate Talking: In most cases, I know that that's not what you really mean, but I do, when you say 1 minute, think that that really does mean 1 minute.
- 9:17I Hate Talking: So why do you think that 1 2nd and 1 minute is different?
- 9:21I Hate Talking: I think that I know that 1 2nd is not going to be a reality, but I think that 1 minute could be a reality.
- 9:32I Hate Talking: If I said in an hour, would you start a countdown for 60 minutes?
- 9:38I Hate Talking: I would either do that or I would probably just go do it myself because I don't want to wait that long.
- 9:43I Hate Talking: And I, it's definitely a habit.
- 9:47I Hate Talking: I'm trying.
- 9:48I Hate Talking: To break.
- 9:50I Hate Talking: In my head, if someone says one second, I just know like, OK, it's coming up quick.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: A minute, maybe slightly longer than that, but.
- 9:58I Hate Talking: There's whole phrases like in a hot minute.
- 10:01I Hate Talking: What do you think that means then?
- 10:03I Hate Talking: That means the minute is going to be passing by very quickly.
- 10:08I Hate Talking: There's also New York minute.
- 10:11I Hate Talking: OK, what do you think New York minute means?
- 10:13I Hate Talking: That I do not know.
- 10:16I Hate Talking: Uh, order the day next time, huh?
- 10:19I Hate Talking: Perhaps it could be.
- 10:20I Hate Talking: I think also you could use the word hot, well as you described with a hot minute, as, uh, also with a hot second.
- 10:27I Hate Talking: Yeah, or another phrase you don't like I use when I say I'm a hot mess.
- 10:33I Hate Talking: It just means like a big mess, like, it's just everything's going crazy.
- 10:39I Hate Talking: In my head, a hot minute if someone says it's a hot minute.
- 10:42I Hate Talking: And it's like, it's just been a crazy minute.
- 10:46I Hate Talking: It's hard to catch up, sort of thing.
- 10:48I Hate Talking: And I'm apparently completely wrong because a hot minute actually means that it's going to be a relatively long period of time, not a fast passing minute.
- 10:58I Hate Talking: Oh, so I need to just start saying in a hot minute.
- 11:02I Hate Talking: I'll get that to you in a hot minute.
- 11:03I Hate Talking: That actually may be a good compromise.
- 11:06I Hate Talking: OK.
- 11:07I Hate Talking: What else am I supposed to say?
- 11:10I Hate Talking: If I'm in the middle of doing something, I know you need another item or another thing, I can't get to at that moment.
- 11:18I Hate Talking: I am not in that moment capable of stopping to calculate how many actual minutes it'll take me cause that's gonna take a whole another minute or two to do.
- 11:31I Hate Talking: So what would you recommend instead of saying in a minute, I'll get to that in a minute.
- 11:39I Hate Talking: I do like the one word that you previously used to describe that, that in that moment you cannot precisely calculate how much time will be required.
- 11:50I Hate Talking: So I think moment would also be an apt replacement for the word minute.
- 11:56I Hate Talking: So you would prefer moment over a second or minute.
- 12:01I Hate Talking: Indeed, I would, and we certainly do not want to use the word or phrase New York minute because that is perhaps what I was thinking of when I was thinking of the definition that came to my mind for hot minute, whereas hot minute means an indeterminate long period of time, a New York minute does mean a very short period of time or in an instant.
- 12:27I Hate Talking: So certainly don't use the word instant when you're responding, but perhaps the word moment would be very acceptable.
- 12:36I Hate Talking: I'll be there in a moment.
- 12:38I Hate Talking: How long is a moment though?
- 12:40I Hate Talking: Is a moment longer than 1 minute and a second?
- 12:44I Hate Talking: A moment is defined and we are getting into lots of words here, a minute portion or point of time, however, it is very.
- 12:56I Hate Talking: Indeterminant in its length, and that is what is key.
- 13:00I Hate Talking: So you're comfortable with the word that's more ambiguous.
- 13:06I Hate Talking: When ambiguity is going to be what is.
- 13:11I Hate Talking: Communicated as the expectation, and ambiguity is indeed better than a specific that is not adhered to.
- 13:21I Hate Talking: What would you say?
- 13:23I Hate Talking: I'm trying to think back.
- 13:25I Hate Talking: If I were to say, hey, can you help me with this, but you're in the middle of doing something.
- 13:32I Hate Talking: What would you say then?
- 13:35I Hate Talking: I would say, in that instance.
- 13:38I Hate Talking: That Yes, I will help you.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: But are you asking the specific question in terms of when I can help you?
- 13:47I Hate Talking: What do I say it in a minute.
- 13:50I Hate Talking: Well, there you have it.
- 13:51I Hate Talking: So perhaps we have made yet another discovery that not only is the specificity or ambiguity of the length of time in question.
- 14:01I Hate Talking: But perhaps the question that I'm asking you is not even in regards to time at all.
- 14:08I Hate Talking: So when do you think I'm gonna help you then?
- 14:11I Hate Talking: Cause in my head, there's like a lineup.
- 14:13I Hate Talking: I'm in the middle, I'm doing the dishes.
- 14:15I Hate Talking: I cannot stop the dishes, or if I do, my hands are wet and I have to dry them and turn off the faucet.
- 14:22I Hate Talking: It's a whole process.
- 14:24I Hate Talking: So let me finish this task, and then I'll move on to this.
- 14:28I Hate Talking: What are you recommending then?
- 14:30I Hate Talking: So in that particular example, perhaps a response that I would find more pleasing to my own interpretation, which again, we're learning both ways that we have opportunities.
- 14:44I Hate Talking: However, perhaps the response that says, With no time bound at all, but instead says, after I'm done with the dishes, yes.
- 14:55I Hate Talking: -- I'll get to that -- next.
- 14:57I Hate Talking: After I'm done with such and such activity that I'm currently partaking in.
- 15:02I Hate Talking: OK.
- 15:04I Hate Talking: I can try to work on that.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: So, we have seen, I think the phrase 1 2nd, 1 minute and perhaps be more aptly described as either a hot minute or a moment or perhaps we should not respond with any time bound at all for these particular questions, but more in terms of the sequence of events.
- 15:28I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 15:28I Hate Talking: So, 1 minute, 1 2nd, but do we ever respond to either between ourselves or perhaps to others with even longer time bounds?
- 15:43I Hate Talking: Do we ever say in an hour, in a few hours, in a day, a few days, weeks, your thoughts.
- 15:50I Hate Talking: Yeah, I definitely um will do just vague.
- 15:55I Hate Talking: Like that, like, it's been a month.
- 15:57I Hate Talking: But really, it's been.
- 16:00I Hate Talking: 3.5 weeks or so.
- 16:03I Hate Talking: Now, you, on the other hand, it always cracks up when you talk to people, because you'll be like, 4 days and 7 hours.
- 16:12I Hate Talking: It's like very specific and um very aware that you have been paying attention to the time and the calendar.
- 16:21I Hate Talking: We're all just round to like, It's been a week.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: Yes, and I think that some of our children, maybe some more than others have that same disposition that I do where they want to know the exact number of times they have to go to sleep before a certain event or perhaps there's even been debates in terms of whether we count the current day that we are within as part of the number of days that we include.
- 16:50I Hate Talking: When we say that this is happening in 7 days, but perhaps that you would say this is happening in 6 days because we're not including the day that we're in.
- 16:59I Hate Talking: OK, so I will humbly accept that I need to work on my Minute and second reference, and I can change the moment, and I will actively work on that.
- 17:13I Hate Talking: What I will not actively work on.
- 17:17I Hate Talking: Unless y'all in the audience, uh, firmly agree with Adam.
- 17:23I Hate Talking: I do not, when I'm counting down to a vacation or whatnot, I will not count today.
- 17:32I Hate Talking: Today is today.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: Um, if I'm saying there's only, we're gonna go on vacation in 4 days.
- 17:39I Hate Talking: In my head, if today is Tuesday, then I'm only counting Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and it's vacation.
- 17:48I Hate Talking: Yeah, I also don't count that.
- 17:50I Hate Talking: Leaving day, so you're.
- 17:54I Hate Talking: How many days in between the actual event where you will count every day and it's so much longer.
- 18:02I Hate Talking: So not only are you not counting Tuesday in the day count, but you're actually leaving for vacation on in this theoretical scenario on the Sunday.
- 18:11I Hate Talking: Yes, so Sunday's vacation in this theory.
- 18:17I Hate Talking: So we have this on our list of potential topics of the expectations that one has and perhaps this plays a part even in terms of how we view time and the time that we must Indoor or experience in order to get to a particular thing that we are looking forward to, where I will typically have low expectations and you will have high expectations.
- 18:47I Hate Talking: So I will have perhaps what I would call a more realistic view on time that that vacation is pessimistic that that vacation is 6 days away, still got to go through the current day.
- 19:02I Hate Talking: And then the day that we leave is included in that.
- 19:05I Hate Talking: Whereas you will have a more.
- 19:08I Hate Talking: Optimistic or Pollyanna view that that vacation is only 4 days away.
- 19:15I Hate Talking: Right?
- 19:15I Hate Talking: I mean, in my head, if you're leaving that night, maybe you don't count that day then.
- 19:21I Hate Talking: In my head, you're living and then here and now, so today doesn't count.
- 19:27I Hate Talking: You've already woken up.
- 19:29I Hate Talking: Taking your shower, gotten ready for the day.
- 19:32I Hate Talking: This day is like already on its way.
- 19:34I Hate Talking: You don't count it.
- 19:35I Hate Talking: And unless you're leaving super late the next night, that day doesn't count either, because that's still the day to do things and The compromise for sure though, for our kids.
- 19:46I Hate Talking: And maybe even for us as a compromise, even though we don't agree, is counting the sleeps, saying how many physical sleeps there are going to bed.
- 20:00I Hate Talking: At nighttime.
- 20:02I Hate Talking: There is to an event.
- 20:05I Hate Talking: Then at least all of us are on the same page on what we're talking about.
- 20:09I Hate Talking: When the kids were younger and we used to do that, you'd be like, is nap time included in that?
- 20:14I Hate Talking: When I'd say there's 4 sleeps left.
- 20:17I Hate Talking: So we had the qualified naps don't count.
- 20:21I Hate Talking: It's physical nighttime, bedtime.
- 20:24I Hate Talking: Physical nighttime, bedtime, yes, that is a good clarification as well.
- 20:29I Hate Talking: Whereas the most accurate thing that we could do, for example, if it was noon on Tuesday and we were arriving at vacation would be to say that it is 78 hours away.
- 20:40I Hate Talking: Oh, but then you're getting into a whole thing.
- 20:43I Hate Talking: Like, does vacation start when you get there?
- 20:44I Hate Talking: You said when you're arriving, so does vacation not start till you get there?
- 20:49I Hate Talking: Or when you go through security at the airport, when your bags are packed and the Uber picks you up, when does vacation actually start?
- 20:58I Hate Talking: When you arrive at your destination.
- 21:00I Hate Talking: I listened to somebody, again, shout out to Clark Howard.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: We mentioned him recently on the podcast.
- 21:07I Hate Talking: He is a money guy, financial guy, and I enjoy listening to him.
- 21:12I Hate Talking: And he's in a um You know, older Getting older, um, past middle age, many years of experience, and he was sharing that and he travels for a living all the time.
- 21:27I Hate Talking: And even in his age, he gets giddy and he is so excited to be in the airport.
- 21:32I Hate Talking: And I guess he shared a story recently on his podcast about how somebody asked him at the airport, this is his first flight ever, cause he was just so giddy about being at the airport.
- 21:45I Hate Talking: Like he does this every week.
- 21:48I Hate Talking: This is his job.
- 21:49I Hate Talking: But he was saying he loves that, he gets excited every time he's in an airport.
- 21:54I Hate Talking: So for him, a vacation would start.
- 21:57I Hate Talking: When the Uber picks them up, right?
- 22:00I Hate Talking: I suppose it would, but for me, it does not.
- 22:03I Hate Talking: Right.
- 22:04I Hate Talking: So, another thing that we can be clear on when we are asking about time bounds is Whether we are determining how much time has passed or how much time is left.
- 22:20I Hate Talking: So if we are talking about perhaps, you know, cooking a meal and that meal is estimated to take 60 minutes to prepare, and we pose the question, how much time is left?
- 22:33I Hate Talking: There may be the response because we are not actively listening, that we respond immediately with how much time has passed and that can cause great confusion.
- 22:45I Hate Talking: So if we ask that question and 40 minutes have passed, but the question is how much time is left?
- 22:53I Hate Talking: Because we know that the total time that we are expecting this meal to take is 60 minutes, we would be expecting to hear the response of 20 minutes and we will have greatly different results if the response is actually 40 minutes because the person is hearing.
- 23:12I Hate Talking: That they are being asked how much time has passed instead of how much time is left.
- 23:17I Hate Talking: Oh, right.
- 23:19I Hate Talking: If they're calculating how long they have been preparing or cooking.
- 23:24I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 23:25I Hate Talking: And our final example for our time bounds and the importance of clear communication is ETA or estimated time of arrival.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: Um, OK, well, what do you think about people?
- 23:43I Hate Talking: Who have you seen those memes where people will be like, I'm on my way.
- 23:48I Hate Talking: But really that means they're just putting their.
- 23:51I Hate Talking: shoes on and looking for their keys.
- 23:55I Hate Talking: That is a possibility, but what I'm getting at actually is that an estimated time of arrival is actually the time reported on the clock and not necessarily a countdown of how much time it will take for someone to get somewhere.
- 24:16I Hate Talking: Mm, OK.
- 24:18I Hate Talking: Um.
- 24:19I Hate Talking: So for us, how we work.
- 24:23I Hate Talking: Like that.
- 24:24I Hate Talking: You and I both have uh when we're talking about what time we need to leave, not necessarily arriving, but what time we need to leave.
- 24:32I Hate Talking: Uh, we have different things.
- 24:35I Hate Talking: In my head, when it's time to leave, like, we better, we have to get there at 10.
- 24:40I Hate Talking: It takes 20 minutes.
- 24:42I Hate Talking: In my head we need to leave at 9-40.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: So we need to leave the house.
- 24:47I Hate Talking: At 9-35.
- 24:50I Hate Talking: Because it takes 5 minutes to get our shoes on and walk out the door and buckle the kids and pull out of the driveway.
- 24:57I Hate Talking: You leave at 9-35.
- 24:59I Hate Talking: In my head, giving us that 5 minute buffer.
- 25:01I Hate Talking: You're thinking we need to be rolling the car, driving down the street at 9-35.
- 25:07I Hate Talking: And this is not something that only we have struggled with, even industries as large as the airline industry will have different times of different events such as leaving the gate versus wheels up.
- 25:23I Hate Talking: Yeah, and I love even, maybe it's not recent, but I haven't traveled the last couple of years very frequently.
- 25:32I Hate Talking: I've noticed recently, That Airlines, the ones I've been flying on.
- 25:40I Hate Talking: The, the ticket says what time they depart, but it also says what day, time they board.
- 25:47I Hate Talking: So I think that was a lot of confusion for some people.
- 25:50I Hate Talking: Oh, you leave at noon.
- 25:52I Hate Talking: But then they get there right before noon, and the doors are already locked and closed.
- 25:58I Hate Talking: So by saying we board, we leave at noon, boarding is at 11-35.
- 26:05I Hate Talking: That gives a more concrete idea of that we're all on the same page.
- 26:10I Hate Talking: Everyone be there before 11-35.
- 26:14I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 26:15I Hate Talking: And I think we are at our time for this episode.
- 26:20I Hate Talking: So, from your friends at I hate talking, remember, it is only through talking that we can begin the journey to understanding.
- 26:28I Hate Talking: Is that episode done?
- 26:31I Hate Talking: That episode is done.
- 26:33I Hate Talking: Hey
