- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, Colorado, the States so nice. We're playing there twice,
- 0:06Speaker 1: two days in a row. Chuck, we added a second
- 0:08Speaker 1: show to our Gothic Theater tour. That's right, we're gonna
- 0:11Speaker 1: be there June seventh and June now sold out, but
- 0:16Speaker 1: one of those weird cases where you go see the
- 0:17Speaker 1: first show you were actually late buying tickets. Right. We're
- 0:21Speaker 1: also going to be in Boston April four, d c
- 0:23Speaker 1: April five. We're gonna be in St. Louis on May
- 0:27Speaker 1: and Cleveland one, and then of course we're gonna wrap
- 0:31Speaker 1: this summer up on June at the Gothic Theater in Colorado.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So go to s y s K live dot com
- 0:38Speaker 1: for all of your information and ticket needs. Welcome to
- 0:43Speaker 1: Stuff you Should Know from House Stuff Works dot com. Hey,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh Clark, there's Charles Chuck,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and there's all Right the sparres. Some explanation. So I
- 1:06Speaker 1: was doing my Stevie from Malcolm in the Middle of Impression,
- 1:09Speaker 1: which one is Stevie. He was the kid in the
- 1:12Speaker 1: wheelchair who was like breathed like that, who talked like
- 1:15Speaker 1: that because he he had serious asthma. Yeah, remember him
- 1:20Speaker 1: was he just like a classmate. Yeah, he was like
- 1:22Speaker 1: his best friend. I believe I remember I like I
- 1:24Speaker 1: like that show. Well that's not what I was doing. Really. No,
- 1:28Speaker 1: we're slightly out of breath because we just had a
- 1:31Speaker 1: fire alarm. Yeah, we had to walk down four stairs,
- 1:34Speaker 1: four flights of stairs, and not like this, the one,
- 1:37Speaker 1: the kind of flight where it's like down, landing down again,
- 1:41Speaker 1: two flights. Yeah, so we walked down eight flights of
- 1:43Speaker 1: stairs and then walked back eight more. Right when we
- 1:47Speaker 1: got down, stopped and immediately turned around to go back in.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It was ridiculous. It was the kind of thing that
- 1:54Speaker 1: makes you say, maybe I won'ly next time it was
- 1:57Speaker 1: a fire alarm. I was prepared to hide in the
- 1:59Speaker 1: studio and keep working. Yeah, we thought about it, but
- 2:01Speaker 1: there's a fire marshal who works here, so you can't
- 2:04Speaker 1: can't run a foul him. Man, he got on that
- 2:06Speaker 1: orange vest quick changes everything. So I ever heard of
- 2:11Speaker 1: those guys that sneak into places with those vests? Yes,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I have, I don't is there a name for what
- 2:20Speaker 1: I think these? I'm sure more than one person has
- 2:22Speaker 1: done this, But there's these two guys in particular who
- 2:25Speaker 1: uh kind of got I don't know about famous, but
- 2:28Speaker 1: made a name for themselves for putting on the orange
- 2:32Speaker 1: vests and saying basically like, if you wear one of these,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you can get in anywhere you want them. If you
- 2:39Speaker 1: have orange vest on, you look like you're supposed to
- 2:41Speaker 1: be there. Well, yeah, you gotta have that steely sense
- 2:45Speaker 1: of nerve and alwakie talkie is probably a good thing
- 2:48Speaker 1: to have to But they can go anywhere because the
- 2:51Speaker 1: orange vest guy. That means that's something's wrong in the
- 2:52Speaker 1: orange vest guy has to take care of it. Like
- 2:55Speaker 1: they showed pictures in the in front of a I
- 2:58Speaker 1: can't remember what show it was, but a big, big
- 3:00Speaker 1: concert where they were in that buffer area between the
- 3:04Speaker 1: people in the stage, right, yeah, and fred Durst is like, oh,
- 3:10Speaker 1: there's an orange guest, the best guy. Something must be
- 3:13Speaker 1: going on. What year was that, This would have been
- 3:16Speaker 1: two thousand two, maybe the fred Durst years, Great Years,
- 3:21Speaker 1: the Wonder years. Right. Well, man, I'm hot now too,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm I feel good. I got like that, got the
- 3:29Speaker 1: endorphins fall and this is gonna be a cool episode, buddy. Well,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the irony is I so grossly out of shape. I
- 3:37Speaker 1: started getting on the peloton Yeah, last week. So I've
- 3:41Speaker 1: been and this is not a plug for pellets, I
- 3:43Speaker 1: guess it is, but a little bit. It's not an ad,
- 3:45Speaker 1: but I've been getting on that thing. So my legs
- 3:48Speaker 1: are ham rubber rubber band hams right now. Anyway, Yeah, hey, y'all,
- 3:56Speaker 1: prepare yourself for the rubber band ham that's hey, will
- 4:01Speaker 1: you indulge me for one moment? Oh man, I've been
- 4:05Speaker 1: waiting for you to ask me that for a long time. Alright,
- 4:08Speaker 1: So I've got the old side gig going with Movie Crush,
- 4:12Speaker 1: my podcast where every Friday I sit down with someone
- 4:16Speaker 1: awesome and talk about their favorite movie and kill it.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Thank you. But I have now added a second weekly
- 4:22Speaker 1: episode that publishes on Monday called Mini Crushes, and that's
- 4:26Speaker 1: where I just sit in here with producer Noel. He's
- 4:30Speaker 1: sort of the omniscient voice of God, uh and he
- 4:33Speaker 1: sort of chimes in and I source a lot of
- 4:35Speaker 1: questions from Facebook to the Movie Crush Facebook page. Um
- 4:39Speaker 1: listener mails that the recommendations, it's just a really interactive
- 4:43Speaker 1: fan based experience. So I want to plug the mini
- 4:46Speaker 1: Crushes and let everyone know that yesterday I dropped a
- 4:50Speaker 1: very special mini Crush, which was The Chuck and it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: Emily's podcast debut. Oh congratulations, man, that's it's called The
- 5:01Speaker 1: Chuck and Emily drink wine, uh and talk about the
- 5:05Speaker 1: Oscar nominations. Oh yes, nice. Yeah, So we recorded this
- 5:09Speaker 1: thing at home. We put the kid to bed and
- 5:12Speaker 1: broke out some nice wine and did our pre Oscar
- 5:15Speaker 1: round up. So that dropped yesterday, and then next Monday,
- 5:18Speaker 1: the day after the Oscars, we're going to have our
- 5:21Speaker 1: post Oscar round up where we talked about who won
- 5:25Speaker 1: and what the speeches were like and who wore it best.
- 5:28Speaker 1: That's awesome, man, Emily is going to be a star. Chuck. Yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 1: she was actually pretty great. And if you want a
- 5:33Speaker 1: little peek behind the Merritle curtain, uh, this is this
- 5:37Speaker 1: is your chance. So yeah, if you could check out
- 5:40Speaker 1: movie Crush on Apple Podcasts or where we get your podcasts.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Nice man, do you feel indulged? Very much? Good? All right,
- 5:49Speaker 1: let's talk about knife throwing. So I'm a little psyched
- 5:52Speaker 1: about this because knife throwing taps into my ninja training
- 5:57Speaker 1: that I did under Tommy Roper, as I'm sure I've
- 6:00Speaker 1: mentioned before, uh reading about this researching it, I never
- 6:04Speaker 1: threw knives. We never made it that far in Maybe
- 6:08Speaker 1: now I'll be I'll be hang gliding throwing knives at
- 6:12Speaker 1: the same time, going to get into both at once.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But I did a little throwing star stuff. Throwing star
- 6:18Speaker 1: is like the dummies, uh, knife throwing because that always sticks, right, Yeah,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I mean, depending on how many spikes you got coming
- 6:26Speaker 1: off of it, and um, and and whether the tree
- 6:32Speaker 1: is actually like a metal pole or not, you're probably
- 6:35Speaker 1: gonna stick a throwing star. Throwing a knife is an
- 6:39Speaker 1: entirely different endeavor, and it's something that anybody can do that.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Nicholas Jerbis were Gurbs never met him yet. Um. He
- 6:48Speaker 1: points out this is actually kind of like a low
- 6:52Speaker 1: hanging hobby that you could. You can get a set
- 6:54Speaker 1: of knives for ten fifteen bucks apiece. You probably one
- 6:58Speaker 1: about five is well will explain why, um, maybe six.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And then you just practice, give yourself a good block
- 7:06Speaker 1: of wood and practice and anybody can do this. It's
- 7:09Speaker 1: not like you're born to throw knives. You practice and
- 7:12Speaker 1: if you like it, you keep going. You just get
- 7:14Speaker 1: better and better at it, and you can impress your
- 7:15Speaker 1: friends and neighbors. Yes, and here's the point in the
- 7:18Speaker 1: show where we issue our c o A. Kids, if
- 7:21Speaker 1: you're out there, do not go get a steake knife
- 7:25Speaker 1: from your drawer and start throwing it at your dog.
- 7:29Speaker 1: That is not a throwing knife. And never throw anything
- 7:32Speaker 1: at your dog, kids. I will come find you. Yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 1: never throw anything at anybody that's sharp. But Um throwing
- 7:38Speaker 1: knives are built to throw. They're weighted and balanced to throw.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They're not like regular old knives. And we'll get into
- 7:46Speaker 1: all that. But just if you really want to try
- 7:49Speaker 1: throwing knives, go ask mom and dad or Tommy Roper
- 7:53Speaker 1: and get ready, get ready for a no and then
- 7:57Speaker 1: and then play them this podcast where it is an
- 8:00Speaker 1: actual um circus art. And please, for the love of God,
- 8:04Speaker 1: tell me this is the last one. I don't think
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the circus arts. No, it's not. What else is, sir?
- 8:10Speaker 1: There's a bunch we've done. The Globe of Death. Yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 1: flame swallowing, lion taming, swords swallowing, sword swallowing. We did
- 8:18Speaker 1: circus families, just straight up circus families. Human cannonball just
- 8:24Speaker 1: got to be it. I don't think so, man. I
- 8:25Speaker 1: think it's going to keep going in cloud clowns. Clowns
- 8:28Speaker 1: for sure, yeah, Um, they don't don't want to p
- 8:31Speaker 1: T Barnum though, No, you mean Hugh Jackman. What is it,
- 8:38Speaker 1: Chuck Stradamus, I don't know, something like that make one
- 8:41Speaker 1: lucky casting call, predict one sexual predator and one bad
- 8:48Speaker 1: Lifetime movie? Or what what was shark Nato sci fi
- 8:51Speaker 1: sci fi movie? Three little things? That's all. That doesn't
- 8:55Speaker 1: make me nuxtra Domans haven't won the lottery yet. I
- 8:58Speaker 1: think of all the things I've said that didn't come
- 8:59Speaker 1: true right way more. Yeah, I guess that's true. You know, yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: whenever writes in and so, well that didn't happen, right,
- 9:07Speaker 1: you really got that? Actually, they do right in to
- 9:09Speaker 1: tell us we've got stuff wrong a lot. So we're
- 9:12Speaker 1: gonna take this seriously because we want you ten year
- 9:15Speaker 1: olds out there who want to get your parents to
- 9:17Speaker 1: let you do this, to to see that you're taking
- 9:20Speaker 1: this seriously by listening to this podcast. First. Okay, that's right.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So what we're talking about specifically is known as, uh
- 9:27Speaker 1: somewhat ironically as an impalement act um, which is really
- 9:33Speaker 1: weird thing to call it. It's well, it's um, yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: it really is. I think it's a little tongue in cheek,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you think, because the point is tyn to not write.
- 9:41Speaker 1: The point is to not impale somebody with this kind
- 9:44Speaker 1: of thing, right, And and impalement acts are an umbrella
- 9:49Speaker 1: term that cover not just knife throwing, but bull whip cracking, oh, shoot,
- 9:54Speaker 1: sharp shooting, archery, William tell kind of thing. All of
- 9:58Speaker 1: those fall under the the umbrella term of impalement X.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Jerry's undressing over there to our left. She got very
- 10:05Speaker 1: hot in the fire drop Um. All right, so this
- 10:10Speaker 1: goes back if we can get back in the way
- 10:11Speaker 1: back machine, all the way back to the late nineteenth century,
- 10:15Speaker 1: we gotta go back here further than that. Are you
- 10:24Speaker 1: gonna go like to ancient times? No, No, We'll still
- 10:26Speaker 1: will just go with the nineteenth century, because I'm sure
- 10:29Speaker 1: Chinese people in ancient times through stuff that's stuck in walls. Well,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I looked at I looked up the oldest knife and
- 10:34Speaker 1: every apparently they did. Apparently they found the oldest knife
- 10:40Speaker 1: five thousand years ago. Oh, the oldest knife knife. So
- 10:44Speaker 1: we've been using knives longer than there have been modern humans. Yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 1: for sure. And then we at some point, probably about
- 10:51Speaker 1: four hundred and ninety nine thousand years ago we started
- 10:55Speaker 1: throwing knives. It's stabbing is okay, but throwing a knife
- 11:00Speaker 1: is when you really can come to appreciate what a
- 11:03Speaker 1: knife does. Okay. Man, there was nothing better in it,
- 11:06Speaker 1: like an eighties movie than when like James Bond through
- 11:10Speaker 1: a knife and I got a guy or American ninja.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That's what I was trained on. Yeah. Um, alright, so
- 11:16Speaker 1: wild uh wild West shows. Buffalo Bill and his Wild
- 11:20Speaker 1: West Shows travel throughout the United States, throughout Europe. Um,
- 11:24Speaker 1: knife throwing became a big spectacle at things like this,
- 11:27Speaker 1: as well as obviously sharp shooting and probably archery. They
- 11:30Speaker 1: probably did all the impalement arts. So they definitely did
- 11:33Speaker 1: um and they really brought it to the world. Um,
- 11:37Speaker 1: to the to the point where you can just basically
- 11:39Speaker 1: say that's where it started, was Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And this is one of those things where, through a
- 11:44Speaker 1: modern lens, it is incredibly misogynistic to think about the
- 11:49Speaker 1: fact that you say, hey, let me take a scantily
- 11:53Speaker 1: clad woman, a target girl. Yeah that's what they call him,
- 11:55Speaker 1: a target girl, and throw knives at her. Yeah, just
- 11:58Speaker 1: stand there still, Yeah, their knives near her. It's always
- 12:02Speaker 1: a lady. She's always got on like a bikini or something.
- 12:05Speaker 1: She's just like almost like while West steampunk renaissance fair thing, right,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know, just to cover all of the all of
- 12:12Speaker 1: the geek boys dreams and desires. Right, But when you
- 12:16Speaker 1: look at it through the modern lens, it's like, man,
- 12:18Speaker 1: that that is totally misogynistic to Uh, that is the act. Um,
- 12:23Speaker 1: it's got a burlesque thing going on. Yeah, sure, I
- 12:25Speaker 1: mean you can see what they're trying to do is
- 12:27Speaker 1: to delate to the young boys in the audience. They're
- 12:30Speaker 1: trying to sell tickets, and it probably wouldn't have sold
- 12:33Speaker 1: as many tickets that they just had build a farmhand
- 12:36Speaker 1: with a balloon in his mouth getting popped, you know.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I mean it's still pretty cool. You're still seeing the
- 12:41Speaker 1: same thing. But yeah, it's just basically tradition and customed
- 12:45Speaker 1: to have a scantily clad woman as your target girl. Again,
- 12:48Speaker 1: that's what they call him, is the target girl, and
- 12:51Speaker 1: that is the one of the two people involved in
- 12:54Speaker 1: this impalement act. That's right. Um, we mentioned the balloon
- 12:58Speaker 1: in the mouth. That was one of the big tricks. Uh.
- 13:00Speaker 1: There was a German husband and wife named the Gibsons
- 13:03Speaker 1: who introduced the very famous Wheel of Death at the
- 13:07Speaker 1: Ringling Brothers show at in Madison Square Garden. Have you
- 13:11Speaker 1: seen this? Yeah? Okay, so I had seen stuff like
- 13:14Speaker 1: with knife throwing before, and I always thought Flee Circus
- 13:17Speaker 1: was another one. Do you remember our Flee Circus episode
- 13:20Speaker 1: where it turns out that Flee Circus has actually involved
- 13:22Speaker 1: real Flea's Yeah, that was the best of the circus arts,
- 13:25Speaker 1: and everybody thought it was like, no, it's magnets are
- 13:27Speaker 1: just your imagination power of suggestion, and that's just not
- 13:31Speaker 1: the case. The same thing applies to knife throwing impalement acts,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Like I always thought, did you really? Yeah? I thought
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think there was like a Happy Days or something
- 13:42Speaker 1: like that where somebody gets volunteered. There's definitely an I
- 13:45Speaker 1: Love Lucy with a Knife act where she's the target girl.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But there's some show where maybe Laverne and surely not
- 13:54Speaker 1: I think about it anyway, the guys throwing them and
- 13:56Speaker 1: like the knives are coming out of the backboard around up.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So it's all an illusion, right, That is not true?
- 14:04Speaker 1: In knife acts, you're if you're the target girl, a
- 14:08Speaker 1: dude is throwing twelve inch long extremely sharp, pointy knives
- 14:14Speaker 1: right at your head and it's trying to get as
- 14:16Speaker 1: close as possible to you without hitting you. Correct And
- 14:19Speaker 1: again it's not just that's just the profile where they're
- 14:22Speaker 1: throwing knives around you and making like a chalk outline
- 14:25Speaker 1: of your of your body. That's the profile. But there's
- 14:28Speaker 1: other ones like holding a cigarette in your mouth and
- 14:31Speaker 1: knocking the ash off with a knife, or you're holding
- 14:35Speaker 1: a flower in your mouth and they slowly like cut
- 14:37Speaker 1: the stem off piece by piece. There's some some pretty
- 14:41Speaker 1: interesting things that people have done with knife acts. Yeah, sometimes,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and this is the riskiest of all moves. Risky or
- 14:47Speaker 1: even more so than the wheel of death is when
- 14:50Speaker 1: they do the when they covered the target over with paper, Yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: the veiled wheel of death, so you can't even see
- 14:56Speaker 1: that spinning who is behind there? You just have to
- 14:58Speaker 1: have it timed completely perfectly right. But if you take
- 15:01Speaker 1: a step back and think about this, there is nothing
- 15:05Speaker 1: about that act that should allow you to say, oh,
- 15:12Speaker 1: if I throw like this, I will I will miss
- 15:15Speaker 1: the person because they're spinning, so you have to know
- 15:18Speaker 1: where their body is at every second. But you've taken
- 15:20Speaker 1: away how you know that, which is your vision because
- 15:24Speaker 1: they're behind a big sheet of paper that you're throwing
- 15:27Speaker 1: knives through. And there's this guy who will talk about
- 15:30Speaker 1: a little further. His name is the Great throw Denie Love.
- 15:33Speaker 1: This guy. Uh, he he has done something. It's probably
- 15:39Speaker 1: the most dangerous, most impressive knife throwing act anyone's ever done.
- 15:43Speaker 1: He did the veiled wheel of death with two target
- 15:48Speaker 1: girls on it. So he has two girls strapped to
- 15:51Speaker 1: a board spinning behind a big piece of paper that
- 15:55Speaker 1: he can't see them through, and he's throwing knives at them. Yes,
- 15:59Speaker 1: very fast. The guy through room on an average of
- 16:01Speaker 1: a knife every point five nine seconds um. And he
- 16:05Speaker 1: didn't hit either one of them. Amazing, it is amazing.
- 16:09Speaker 1: It's so amazing. I think we just take a break
- 16:11Speaker 1: and re regroup. We're back. We just watched uh one
- 16:40Speaker 1: hour of great thirteen even videos. Uh. He apparently caught
- 16:45Speaker 1: on like in its fifties. Yeah, it's like, hey, I'm
- 16:48Speaker 1: pretty good at this. Back in just I guess somebody
- 16:51Speaker 1: was like, maybe have you tried throwing knives? And he
- 16:54Speaker 1: said no, I haven't, And they were like, well, try
- 16:55Speaker 1: throwing knives and he said, well, fine, I will. A
- 16:58Speaker 1: couple of weeks later, he tried throwing and he said,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I really like this. Um. He said it felt natural
- 17:03Speaker 1: and right. So he started throwing knives and entered competitions
- 17:08Speaker 1: and um started winning. I think he became world champion
- 17:11Speaker 1: with him like two years he beat the other four people. Uh.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And then he said, you know what, this is fun
- 17:18Speaker 1: and all like these competitions, but I think I want
- 17:21Speaker 1: to try and act like an old throwback and palement act.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So we started one when basically but his wife Barbara
- 17:29Speaker 1: Target girl, get up target Girl, one of them. Yeah,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I think she may have been the original one. Uh.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Taught her to smoke cigarettes so he could knock the
- 17:39Speaker 1: ash off of the end of them. And there you go.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Impalement act achieved. But not only that, Chuck like the
- 17:45Speaker 1: guy is like legitimately the best knife thrower on the planet. Well,
- 17:50Speaker 1: he's one of them. He holds a record for fastest.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But boy, you go down a YouTube rabbit hole and
- 17:55Speaker 1: to like people like Ralph Thorne and better than Thordin. Huh, well,
- 18:01Speaker 1: great Thordini does the impalement act as in the circus art.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Ralph Thorn is like if you're running through the woods
- 18:08Speaker 1: chasing somebody I haven't seen this guy and this is
- 18:11Speaker 1: well that's the thorn style. We'll get into those styles later.
- 18:14Speaker 1: But um, yeah, he will like launch himself off of
- 18:16Speaker 1: a tree stump in the air and throw one behind
- 18:19Speaker 1: his back and see now that's basically the training I was. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:23Speaker 1: like martial arts, real world, suburban neighborhood dangers. There's a raccoon.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, you're not throwing a raccoons. Um, alright,
- 18:36Speaker 1: so raccoon comes at me. Well sure, okay, Um, here's
- 18:43Speaker 1: what you need if you if you're gonna throw a knife,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you need a throwing knife. Throwing knife, Like I said,
- 18:48Speaker 1: it's not a steak knife. It is very much made
- 18:50Speaker 1: to be thrown. It is balanced so that you throw it,
- 18:54Speaker 1: and we'll talk about the different ways that they're balanced.
- 18:57Speaker 1: But one thing they're not is sharp up on the sides. Yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: they're very pointy, but um, they're dull on the edges
- 19:05Speaker 1: because you're gonna a lot of times to be throwing
- 19:06Speaker 1: it by that blade. Um, so get a knife for throwing.
- 19:12Speaker 1: The old saying, Um, sharp of point, sharper point is
- 19:17Speaker 1: the point sharp of edge? Uh it doesn't. It does
- 19:23Speaker 1: you no good that old saying yeah, that's a great thing,
- 19:27Speaker 1: like that should go on a T shirt. You should so, um, yeah,
- 19:31Speaker 1: you want a sharp point, but there's there's nothing about
- 19:33Speaker 1: a sharp edge that's going to help you in any way,
- 19:35Speaker 1: shape or form, because the whole point, again, is the
- 19:38Speaker 1: point that's gonna stick into that endo, whatever that target is,
- 19:42Speaker 1: which is usually a block of wood. Right. So, um,
- 19:46Speaker 1: depending on where how you're going to throw it, you
- 19:49Speaker 1: want to throw the heavy end first. And there's a
- 19:52Speaker 1: reason for this. The reason is is that, if you
- 19:56Speaker 1: want to get technical about it, velocity equals um distance
- 20:02Speaker 1: divided by time, right, And when you're throwing a knife,
- 20:05Speaker 1: especially the heavy end first, the heavy end has traveled
- 20:09Speaker 1: a further distance in the same amount of time than
- 20:12Speaker 1: the lighter end. This, friends, creates something very important a
- 20:16Speaker 1: knife throwing, although not fundamental, which is spin. Okay, And
- 20:21Speaker 1: so if you throw the throw the knife, you're gonna
- 20:24Speaker 1: throw it either blade end or handle end. And the
- 20:28Speaker 1: end regards what you're holding when you throw it. And
- 20:34Speaker 1: if you're holding say a knife handle, and you're throwing
- 20:37Speaker 1: it from the handle end, you're the front of the knife.
- 20:41Speaker 1: The point is going to be weighted. It's going to
- 20:44Speaker 1: be heavier so that that starts the spin. If you're
- 20:47Speaker 1: throwing it blade first, the handle itself will be heavier,
- 20:51Speaker 1: so that will start the spin. And there's a couple
- 20:53Speaker 1: of different depending on which way you're throwing. There's a
- 20:59Speaker 1: the spin is going to take place over this the
- 21:02Speaker 1: course of um a very short distance actually, and so
- 21:07Speaker 1: let me let me just back up a second here. Okay,
- 21:10Speaker 1: there's there's some factors involved. Okay, they are distanced to target,
- 21:16Speaker 1: length of nighte, weight and balance and then knife type. Right,
- 21:21Speaker 1: So the distance the target is going to is going
- 21:23Speaker 1: to tell you what type of throw you want, that's right, Um,
- 21:30Speaker 1: the kind of knife. Uh, they say, for every good
- 21:34Speaker 1: rule of thumb here, just throw it out. But they
- 21:35Speaker 1: do mention a rule of thumb regardless. That says a
- 21:40Speaker 1: blade that weighs about one ounce per inch, so in
- 21:44Speaker 1: thiss per inch of your the whole knife. Yeah, so um,
- 21:48Speaker 1: they shouldn't. Well, you can throw it ever you want,
- 21:51Speaker 1: but ten to sixteen ounces is a good starter knife, uh,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you know, and about that long or maybe twelve to
- 21:58Speaker 1: fourteen inches and about that many ounces is where you
- 22:02Speaker 1: want to start off as a beginner. All kinds of
- 22:04Speaker 1: shapes to like definitely. Some of them are like little spears. Uh.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Some have multiple points, more like throwing stars. Uh. They
- 22:12Speaker 1: really run the gamut right there. Um. So, depending on
- 22:15Speaker 1: how you're gonna throw, whether it's a handle throw or
- 22:17Speaker 1: a blade throw, the weight of the knife is going
- 22:20Speaker 1: to be either in the handle or the blade. It's
- 22:21Speaker 1: going to be the opposite of where you're holding the knife. Um.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And if you throw holding the blade, you're going to
- 22:29Speaker 1: throw a half turn. It's a half turn throw right, Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 1: And the reason they call it that is because the
- 22:36Speaker 1: knife only makes one half turn. The blade straightens out
- 22:41Speaker 1: from your hand towards the target, and then that's the
- 22:44Speaker 1: only turn it makes. Yeah, it's not like in the
- 22:46Speaker 1: movies a lot of times you'll see you go right
- 22:49Speaker 1: and turn like nine times and stick the guy in
- 22:51Speaker 1: the forehead. That's really not what you're doing with knife throwing. No,
- 22:55Speaker 1: it's basically if you if you're throwing it by the blade,
- 22:58Speaker 1: it's gonna make one half turn and that's it. So
- 23:00Speaker 1: you if your blade throwing, you would stand closest to
- 23:04Speaker 1: the target, right, So if some guys coming at you
- 23:06Speaker 1: dressed as a raccoon and you know, he's gonna hurt you,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and you can throw a knife and he's real close,
- 23:10Speaker 1: you would throw by the blade, that's right. Uh. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: in fact, I don't even know if it's possible to
- 23:16Speaker 1: throw a knife like they do in the movies that
- 23:18Speaker 1: I don't think. So just tumbles because every video I
- 23:21Speaker 1: saw there, like you try and prevent tumbling as much
- 23:24Speaker 1: as you can, Like that's the whole game as too,
- 23:28Speaker 1: because physics says that a revolving object that suddenly breaks
- 23:31Speaker 1: free will continue to move in a straight line tangential
- 23:34Speaker 1: to the point at which it's released. In other words,
- 23:38Speaker 1: that release points a little tricky. You know, you gotta
- 23:40Speaker 1: dial that in. But we'll get to that too. And
- 23:43Speaker 1: on the actual throwing right, Um, so the uh, the
- 23:47Speaker 1: next the next furthest away from the target is if
- 23:51Speaker 1: you're holding the the knife by the handle and you're
- 23:55Speaker 1: throwing it, it's going to make that's a full turn,
- 23:57Speaker 1: full spin uh, to where a blade goes from facing
- 24:01Speaker 1: the target, facing away from the target, and back to
- 24:04Speaker 1: facing the target in time to stick into that target
- 24:07Speaker 1: and not embarrassingly bounce off because it hit the blade
- 24:10Speaker 1: or the handle first. That's very humiliating. So humiliating. Uh.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And then the last one is the furthest throwing away
- 24:16Speaker 1: and it's about the most you would ever want a
- 24:19Speaker 1: blade to turn, which is two times. That's about thirty
- 24:23Speaker 1: ft or about ten meters away from your target. You
- 24:26Speaker 1: could possibly get it to spin twice, but usually you
- 24:30Speaker 1: just wanted to spin once or half and that's it. Yeah.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And uh, did you say a half turn's about seven
- 24:38Speaker 1: or eight feet? I don't think I did. I just
- 24:39Speaker 1: said it was the closest. Yeah, about seven or eight feet.
- 24:41Speaker 1: It depends full spin about twelve to fifteen And like
- 24:44Speaker 1: you said, the the great throw Dni double Bondini double
- 24:49Speaker 1: twist is up. Yeah. Although one of these other throws
- 24:54Speaker 1: that we're gonna get into this thorn throw. One of
- 24:57Speaker 1: the benefits is you can throw from anywhere, supposedly. So
- 25:01Speaker 1: we're gonna take one more break and then we're gonna
- 25:02Speaker 1: come back and teach you a little bit about throwing
- 25:06Speaker 1: and then, uh, what to look for in a good knife. Okay,
- 25:35Speaker 1: so you've got you know about how close you want
- 25:38Speaker 1: to stand at the target, depending on whether you're holding
- 25:40Speaker 1: the knife by the blade or the handle. The good
- 25:44Speaker 1: thing is is there are a couple of different grips,
- 25:46Speaker 1: but they're very similar. So if you're like I want
- 25:48Speaker 1: to get into blade throwing first because that looks pretty cool,
- 25:51Speaker 1: you're going to basically pinch them the blade of the knife.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And remember these are not sharp edges, so you should
- 25:58Speaker 1: be fine if you do. If you I saw, if
- 26:00Speaker 1: you are using a sharp edge knife, you want to
- 26:03Speaker 1: hold the blunt end. Yeah, but you don't want to
- 26:05Speaker 1: do that. You don't even want to do that, so
- 26:07Speaker 1: so it doesn't really matter which way you're holding it.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But if you if it is sharp on what edge,
- 26:11Speaker 1: hold the other edge and you're just basically pinching it
- 26:13Speaker 1: between your your thumb and your first three fingers, just
- 26:17Speaker 1: a little pitch. Yeah, it's just just a teeny pinch.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Maybe stick your pinky out for effect, all right, and
- 26:22Speaker 1: that that's the blade throw. Yeah, and you've already got
- 26:25Speaker 1: your target. By the way, at this point, I know
- 26:27Speaker 1: you mentioned a block of wood, but they recommend um
- 26:31Speaker 1: aims small. What does it start small? Aim small? Yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 1: which is don't don't You don't need a tree trunk
- 26:39Speaker 1: um sliced up and put on a wall, like you
- 26:42Speaker 1: just need like whatever, a little twelve inch by twelve
- 26:45Speaker 1: inch block of wood, or maybe if you want to
- 26:48Speaker 1: uh screw a bunch of wood together and then draw
- 26:49Speaker 1: a target on there, that's fine too. Yeah. You should
- 26:52Speaker 1: probably glue though, because the screws might your your knife
- 26:55Speaker 1: might bounce off of them. Yeah, you know if you
- 27:00Speaker 1: using metal screws as opposed to the traditional wooden dell. Right.
- 27:05Speaker 1: So um, right, so the the that's the what did
- 27:11Speaker 1: I say, that's the blade throw? Right? Ye, there's a
- 27:14Speaker 1: handle throw too, and this one is called a hatchet
- 27:17Speaker 1: throw or hammer throw or the handle throw you could
- 27:20Speaker 1: call it to and everybody all know what you're talking about. Yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 1: and you stand, uh, you're a little further back for
- 27:26Speaker 1: this one because you've got your your full turn going, uh,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and then you just grip it like a baseball bat
- 27:32Speaker 1: and swing away right right, close your eyes, and you
- 27:35Speaker 1: hope for the best ninja strike, right yeah. Yeah. So um.
- 27:41Speaker 1: The cool thing is what you were saying about starting small,
- 27:44Speaker 1: aiming small, is that when you when you figure out
- 27:48Speaker 1: that there's actually just a few mechanics going on here,
- 27:51Speaker 1: you'll be able to tell what part of your throw
- 27:54Speaker 1: is actually off, whether it's distance, whether it's when you're releasing,
- 27:58Speaker 1: whether it's um how you're gripping it. The problems are
- 28:02Speaker 1: the issues with your throw will show up, and you'll
- 28:05Speaker 1: be able to read based on how the knife is
- 28:08Speaker 1: landing or sticking. What's wrong with your throw? Yeah, Like
- 28:12Speaker 1: if you are throwing, I think blade first, and it sticks,
- 28:18Speaker 1: but it's sticking at a really hard angle where the
- 28:21Speaker 1: where the handle is pointing down. Then they say, maybe
- 28:24Speaker 1: just move back six inches with your stance. That is it. Yeah,
- 28:30Speaker 1: you're right, you're right, and then try it again. Yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 1: because that means that you're the knife didn't get its
- 28:36Speaker 1: full rotation. You wanted to basically be sticking straight out
- 28:40Speaker 1: perpendicular to the target. Yeah, that's a correct throw as
- 28:44Speaker 1: you're as you're learning to do this. Yeah, and did
- 28:46Speaker 1: you say that it's generally your opposite leg of your
- 28:50Speaker 1: throwing hand forward, So so yeah, so the stance, yeah,
- 28:54Speaker 1: I mean generally. But then again I also saw this
- 28:56Speaker 1: Russian guy that through with his throwing leg or the
- 29:02Speaker 1: same leg as a throwing hand forward, and he was like,
- 29:05Speaker 1: you know it all works basically was this thing. I
- 29:09Speaker 1: knew you had the Italian thing going on, but Russian
- 29:13Speaker 1: that was good. I can I can do that. So
- 29:15Speaker 1: let's get into the throw them. Okay, So the stance,
- 29:18Speaker 1: I should say, so with the with the stance, you're
- 29:20Speaker 1: standing with your um, you're you're throwing arm. The leg
- 29:25Speaker 1: opposite you're throwing arm is closest to the target. It's
- 29:28Speaker 1: kind of like you're throwing a dart, you know, um, yes, okay,
- 29:33Speaker 1: like that. Well, actually that's not quite true when I
- 29:37Speaker 1: throw it. When you throw a dart, you're the leg
- 29:40Speaker 1: that is, the foot that is on the line is
- 29:42Speaker 1: the same side as you're throwing hand, is it. Yeah? Okay,
- 29:45Speaker 1: well this is the opposite of that. Maybe I've been
- 29:47Speaker 1: throwing darts throng arms time. So the so the the
- 29:52Speaker 1: leg opposite you're throwing arm is the one you want
- 29:55Speaker 1: closest to the target. Traditionally, right, Traditionally your weight is
- 29:59Speaker 1: on your back leg, that is you're throwing, and what
- 30:01Speaker 1: you're doing is you're gripping the knife. However you want
- 30:05Speaker 1: to blade or handle either way. You line it up
- 30:11Speaker 1: right with your eye against the target, bring your arm
- 30:14Speaker 1: back behind your head, and then keeping your wrists straight.
- 30:19Speaker 1: You don't want to flip your wrist or anything like it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: You bring it in an arc in front of you,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and you finish like you are shaking somebody's hand. You're going, hey,
- 30:29Speaker 1: how are you right? But I got a knife? Right.
- 30:32Speaker 1: The thing is, here's the thing. You're gonna want to
- 30:36Speaker 1: release at that handshake part when your hand is straight
- 30:39Speaker 1: out in front of you, and you're gonna find nothing
- 30:41Speaker 1: but heartache trying to throw a knife like that. Oh,
- 30:46Speaker 1: if you release it right at the end, it goes,
- 30:49Speaker 1: it'll go straight down, right, It'll go down in front
- 30:51Speaker 1: of you. Because when you release an object that's going
- 30:54Speaker 1: in an arc, it wants to go straight in a
- 30:56Speaker 1: tangential line from the the the top of the arc. Right,
- 31:01Speaker 1: that's right. So you want to release it at the
- 31:03Speaker 1: top of the arc. That's right. So that is I
- 31:07Speaker 1: was practicing just in the air, trying to to make
- 31:13Speaker 1: my brain release it at the top. And that is
- 31:16Speaker 1: really difficult to do because you think initially that the
- 31:19Speaker 1: nicest gonna go shooting up into the air. It's not.
- 31:21Speaker 1: It's gonna go straight. That's right. Pretty neat stuff, that's right.
- 31:26Speaker 1: And this is just I don't even know what the
- 31:28Speaker 1: traditional throw was called, you, I know, I didn't see
- 31:33Speaker 1: a name for it. Well, there are some other throws
- 31:36Speaker 1: which I might as well go ahead and mention I've teased.
- 31:39Speaker 1: One is the aforementioned Thorn style from Ralph Thorne. Okay,
- 31:44Speaker 1: that's named after a dude. Was named after a dude.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Either way, it sounds cool. Yeah this one, Um, did
- 31:51Speaker 1: you see this one at all? Inline? I didn't see
- 31:53Speaker 1: that one. I kind of had an idea of what
- 31:55Speaker 1: they were talking about based on the article. Yeah, they
- 31:57Speaker 1: say that it resembles spear throwing. The action, um, I guess,
- 32:01Speaker 1: and that you're you're not taking the knife like behind
- 32:05Speaker 1: your ear. You're sort of just extending your whole arm
- 32:09Speaker 1: and doing a big almost like you're throwing a baseball pitch. Sure,
- 32:12Speaker 1: that's what I imagine. Yeah, that's what it sort of
- 32:14Speaker 1: looked like, sort of like a bunch of people were
- 32:17Speaker 1: doing it different. And then this guy's jumping all over
- 32:19Speaker 1: behind his back like Thorne style seems to be two
- 32:24Speaker 1: just do whatever you want. Okay, that's not true. Thorne's
- 32:28Speaker 1: probably just like so angry right now he's Uh. Then
- 32:34Speaker 1: there was the Russian style and this look it's a
- 32:38Speaker 1: very compact um, the elbow is in near the body,
- 32:42Speaker 1: you hold the knife behind the ear. Uh. And this
- 32:44Speaker 1: I saw it was a little bit more like, you know,
- 32:47Speaker 1: like that kind of thing. So that seems to me
- 32:49Speaker 1: like depending on how close you're holding your elbow to
- 32:51Speaker 1: your body, like you're gonna chop the top of your
- 32:53Speaker 1: ear off. Well you want to avoid that, but it's
- 32:57Speaker 1: it's more like you're pushing it out rather than throwing
- 33:00Speaker 1: it like a tomahawk. So that's what I thought. Um
- 33:05Speaker 1: mom you on style was like where you're basically like
- 33:10Speaker 1: shoving the knife forward. Well what I saw with that style,
- 33:15Speaker 1: and again all these videos were different, so I don't
- 33:18Speaker 1: know if these people are just I mean, it is
- 33:20Speaker 1: YouTube making it. It's not like they're like, I'm an
- 33:23Speaker 1: accredited thornist. But the MoMu In style looks like they
- 33:29Speaker 1: were having the knife like in their hand, like kind
- 33:32Speaker 1: of in their palm and would throw it. But I
- 33:35Speaker 1: don't know if that was because of the knife, because
- 33:38Speaker 1: the guy on there was like, this is a bo
- 33:40Speaker 1: bo hurrikan spike which is thrown in the MoMu in style.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Then that's what this article said to people really get
- 33:49Speaker 1: into this on online though, right, That's what I did discover.
- 33:52Speaker 1: So the three the three things, those three types thorn style,
- 33:55Speaker 1: mom you on, and Russian style. Those are all styles
- 33:58Speaker 1: of knife throwing. Them all no spin. That's what the
- 34:01Speaker 1: common thread that they all have. Yeah, which is pretty cool.
- 34:04Speaker 1: It is cool. And there's a couple of reasons you
- 34:06Speaker 1: want to do this. The most knife throwers say that's
- 34:08Speaker 1: really tough on the joints after a while, that's what
- 34:11Speaker 1: they say. And um, the reason why is because it
- 34:15Speaker 1: involves like doing crazy like snapping motions with your elbow
- 34:18Speaker 1: and your wrist and stuff. Whereas with knife throwing it's
- 34:21Speaker 1: just a smooth arc you're making it. Almost all of
- 34:24Speaker 1: the motion is in your shoulder and your elbow, your
- 34:27Speaker 1: wrist stays straight, and you just are generally releasing your
- 34:31Speaker 1: grasp on the NiFe right into his ape all day long. Right. Yeah.
- 34:36Speaker 1: With the no spin styles, it is, it's just tougher.
- 34:39Speaker 1: It's more of a snapping motion. That's like you're gonna
- 34:42Speaker 1: get tennis elbow after a while. The reason the advantage
- 34:45Speaker 1: that these have is like, if you're trying to throw
- 34:47Speaker 1: a knife through a hole, you can't have a twelve
- 34:50Speaker 1: inch knife spinning making this twenty four inch arc basically
- 34:54Speaker 1: or circle. Um, you just want to send it straight
- 34:57Speaker 1: like a missile through that hole in to some dude's
- 35:00Speaker 1: leg in his calf, and then you you pounce on him,
- 35:07Speaker 1: put your hand over his mouth and nose until he
- 35:10Speaker 1: falls asleep, and then you can advance further towards the castle. Well,
- 35:14Speaker 1: the the Russian guy I saw was talking about the
- 35:19Speaker 1: first thing you do is find the balance point. So
- 35:22Speaker 1: he held out his finger and put the knife on
- 35:25Speaker 1: it until, you know, like a little sea solid till
- 35:27Speaker 1: he found the exact point. And he's like, there's a
- 35:29Speaker 1: balance point. So once you find out where that is,
- 35:32Speaker 1: that will teach you exactly how to hold it um
- 35:36Speaker 1: in any in any scenario. Basically, I know where the
- 35:39Speaker 1: balance point is though, So whatever you're doing, though, if
- 35:42Speaker 1: if this sounds like something you want to do, whether
- 35:45Speaker 1: it's spin throwing or no spin throwing techniques, the key
- 35:49Speaker 1: to knife throwing of any kind is practice, practice, practice,
- 35:54Speaker 1: And this article actually gives a really good piece of advice.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It says, get a little set of throwing nives, the
- 36:00Speaker 1: best you can afford, because the more expensive they are,
- 36:04Speaker 1: typically with them, the better the more well made they are.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And um, get some, get like I said, of three
- 36:11Speaker 1: or five or whatever, because you're you're going to have
- 36:14Speaker 1: to practice repeatedly. And if you have one knife and
- 36:18Speaker 1: you're standing fifteen feet away, you throw it, you have
- 36:21Speaker 1: to go get it. You throw it again and go
- 36:23Speaker 1: get it. That's not nearly as fun as trying to
- 36:26Speaker 1: throw like five quickly in a row. So you're number one,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you're gonna be more entertained. Um. But also if you do,
- 36:32Speaker 1: no matter how many knives you have, if you start
- 36:34Speaker 1: to lose focus, if you start to get bored or frustrated,
- 36:37Speaker 1: stop because if there's one thing about knife throwing, it's
- 36:40Speaker 1: meant to be fun. And if you're practicing with your friends, uh,
- 36:45Speaker 1: don't they don't stand to the side of the target.
- 36:47Speaker 1: They don't stand directly behind you. UM. I would recommend
- 36:51Speaker 1: they stand well behind you and well to one side
- 36:55Speaker 1: of you. I've got one even better. Don't even don't
- 36:57Speaker 1: even let your friends anywhere near you. You you have
- 37:00Speaker 1: to be alone while you're practicing throwing knives, but you
- 37:03Speaker 1: have to be in text or phone contact with your parents.
- 37:07Speaker 1: We're watching you from a safe distance. Sing it to
- 37:11Speaker 1: your parents. Maybe. So, Uh, you should go and look
- 37:14Speaker 1: at some of these Ralph Thorn videos because the funnies,
- 37:16Speaker 1: the funniest part is, uh, the almost um, not angry,
- 37:23Speaker 1: but just his trudge towards the target afterward is very like,
- 37:29Speaker 1: I don't know, it's weird. He'll jump up in the
- 37:30Speaker 1: air and throw a few and then he's just like
- 37:33Speaker 1: do do do and then walks over and undoes it
- 37:36Speaker 1: from the log like I don't know. All the pizzazz
- 37:39Speaker 1: leaves as soon as he's thrown. That's when you need.
- 37:43Speaker 1: The pizzazz is during the throwing. The rest is just
- 37:45Speaker 1: wasted energy. Yeah, but you don't see throw Deny. That's
- 37:47Speaker 1: the difference between an impalement act and a dudeness backyard
- 37:51Speaker 1: on YouTube. Well, throw DENI has the smarts to hire
- 37:53Speaker 1: an editor to edit that part out. Yeah, it's a
- 37:56Speaker 1: good point. I don't know if we said the great
- 37:59Speaker 1: throw Denie's name. His name is David ed Amovitch and
- 38:03Speaker 1: he's a neat guy. Great name. So if you want
- 38:07Speaker 1: to know more about the great throw Deanie or what's
- 38:10Speaker 1: what's Thorne's first name, Jesse Thorn, the other thing Ralph
- 38:14Speaker 1: Ralph Thorn, or any kind of night throw and go
- 38:17Speaker 1: go check out some videos. Again, do not do this
- 38:21Speaker 1: unless your parents say it's okay, and do it safely.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Don't be stupid and never ever throw any living thing
- 38:27Speaker 1: ever of any kind ever, or Josh and Chuck are
- 38:30Speaker 1: going to be so mad at you. Uh. And in
- 38:33Speaker 1: the meantime, let's listen to some listener Matt, all right,
- 38:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna call this, oh, welcome back to the fold.
- 38:43Speaker 1: This just delighted me. I like this one too. You
- 38:45Speaker 1: know in April it's gonna be ten years, which is
- 38:49Speaker 1: just nutty, nutty, nutty. No one ever thought we'd be
- 38:54Speaker 1: doing this so long. Jerry has an age today, now
- 38:57Speaker 1: she hasn't, but she's taken up more clothes as the podcasts. Uh,
- 39:03Speaker 1: she's getting ready for a gig as a target girl.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Um all right, guys, um, and Jerry, whoever, whoever else
- 39:11Speaker 1: that Stuff you should Know might actually be reading this.
- 39:14Speaker 1: I don't know how famil works, is what she says.
- 39:17Speaker 1: This is how it works. Yeah, we read it. I realized, um,
- 39:20Speaker 1: that the most I'm realistically going to achieve by stating this.
- 39:23Speaker 1: It's making you feel old. But when I was eleven
- 39:26Speaker 1: years old in two thousand eleven, Stuff you Should Know
- 39:29Speaker 1: was my favorite podcast and listen to every episode. Kept
- 39:32Speaker 1: on listening for a couple of years until I was
- 39:34Speaker 1: thirteen when I stopped listening to it, because that's all
- 39:38Speaker 1: we lose them is when they get too cool for school.
- 39:40Speaker 1: That's right. So for those those of your teenagers who
- 39:43Speaker 1: have kept listening through your teen years, we think you're cool.
- 39:47Speaker 1: You're doing it right. Your peers probably don't, but we do.
- 39:50Speaker 1: I have no idea why I stopped guys up until today.
- 39:53Speaker 1: I actually figured you guys must have stopped making it,
- 39:55Speaker 1: and I never bothered to go back and check until today.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Isn't that funny to think back? To think that someone
- 40:01Speaker 1: can think back like, oh remember those guys? Like how
- 40:05Speaker 1: long a daily? Weekly life? So funny. I'm not sure
- 40:09Speaker 1: how to properly put how I feel into words, though, Uh,
- 40:12Speaker 1: because not a lot else from when I was that
- 40:15Speaker 1: age still exist. I grew up with the Internet, but
- 40:18Speaker 1: poking around Google and looking for old sites I used
- 40:20Speaker 1: to just uh, it reveals a trail of deleted accounts
- 40:24Speaker 1: and domain names that no longer resolve. What does she
- 40:28Speaker 1: find an old computer or something? I don't know. Maybe
- 40:31Speaker 1: she's definitely taking a trip down memory lane. I know, man,
- 40:33Speaker 1: I've moved countries, so most of my physical stuff was
- 40:35Speaker 1: either given away or thrown into a landfill across the Atlantic.
- 40:38Speaker 1: The fact that stuff you should know still exists and
- 40:40Speaker 1: it's still making episodes that are just as good as
- 40:43Speaker 1: I remember them being as incredible. Wow, this is crazy.
- 40:48Speaker 1: This is from Hazel. She has to We have a
- 40:50Speaker 1: po box as you can send some Jofa cakes. Oh
- 40:53Speaker 1: this I don't remember if I gave Hazel or address,
- 40:57Speaker 1: well please do. But Hazel, if you're right back, we'll
- 40:59Speaker 1: give you our dress and we can get some chopic cakes.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Thanks for coming back. Yeah, we appreciate that. We're glad
- 41:05Speaker 1: to have kept the home fires burning for you there, Hazel.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I'd like to hear from Sarah. Sarah Sparrow, the amazing
- 41:11Speaker 1: ninety year old fan. Yeah, she's eleven years old. I
- 41:14Speaker 1: think she was at the time. No, she was like
- 41:17Speaker 1: was she like eight or nine? Yeah, I can't remember
- 41:20Speaker 1: when she started. Yeah, but she was really young. Yeah
- 41:23Speaker 1: she became a cool teenage, she definitely did. But maybe
- 41:26Speaker 1: she'll become an actually cool college student in Yeah. Well
- 41:29Speaker 1: thanks a lot, Hazel. Uh, if you left us and
