- 0:24to lead us through today's journey. Here. is
- 0:29your host pastor david welcome to voices of life
- 0:36a ministry of the church for life i'm pastor
- 0:39david today is september 24th and history gives
- 0:43us three powerful stories one about law one about
- 0:47money and one about meaning together they form
- 0:51a remarkable reminder of what it means to build
- 0:54a life of meaning The year is 1789 and Congress
- 1:00passes the Judiciary Act and it becomes the birth
- 1:04of federal justice. So did you know? On September
- 1:0724, 1789, President George Washington signed
- 1:11the Judiciary Act of 1789 establishing America's
- 1:14federal court system. Congress had already outlined
- 1:17the judicial branch in Article 3 of the Constitution,
- 1:21but the details were missing. The Judiciary Act
- 1:25provided the practical structure. A Supreme Court
- 1:29with a Chief Justice and five Associate Justices.
- 1:33Federal District Courts across the states. Circuit
- 1:37Courts where Supreme Court Justices travel to
- 1:40hear cases. And the creation of the Attorney
- 1:43General responsible for advising the President
- 1:46and representing the nation before the Supreme
- 1:50Court. This act did not create the Department
- 1:53of Justice. That came later in 1870. But it laid
- 1:57the foundation on how justice would function
- 2:00in a new nation. Our connection here is justice
- 2:03versus vengeance. The Bible draws a clear line
- 2:08between justice and vengeance. Romans 12 verse
- 2:1019 says, And reminds us that vengeance is mine,
- 2:14I will repay, saith the Lord. Micah 6 verse 8
- 2:19gives us the posture of justice. Do justly, love
- 2:24mercy, and walk humbly with your God. Courts
- 2:29exist not to satisfy personal revenge, but to
- 2:33uphold order, accountability, and mercy under
- 2:36lawful authority. Did you know? On September
- 2:3924, 1869, the United States experienced one of
- 2:44the most dramatic financial crashes in its history,
- 2:47a day known as Black Friday. Financiers Jay Gould
- 2:51and James Fisk attempted to corner the gold market.
- 2:54They bought enormous amounts of gold, driving
- 2:58prices higher and higher. Their scheme even reached
- 3:02into political circles through President Grant's
- 3:05brother -in -law. But when President Ulysses
- 3:09S. Grant realized what was happening, the Treasury
- 3:13released $4 million in gold into the market.
- 3:19You know what that did? The price collapsed.
- 3:22The result? Brokerage firms failed. Fortunes
- 3:27evaporated. Markets lost an estimated $100 million.
- 3:32Now think about this. This is 1869. $100 million.
- 3:41In today's market, that could probably very easily
- 3:45be a trillion dollars. I mean, look at, what
- 3:49was it, Cracker Barrel. They changed their logo,
- 3:52and in one day, lost $100 million in value. That's
- 3:56a lot of money, even in today's money. But for
- 4:00this, it was clearly a scheme, and there were
- 4:05people in on it. And I think the people in on
- 4:07it got what they deserved. So our connection
- 4:10here is greed versus stewardship. This event
- 4:14is a vivid illustration of what scripture warns
- 4:17us about. Timothy 6 verse 10. The love of money
- 4:22is the root of all kinds of evil. Matthew 6 verse
- 4:2624. You cannot serve God and a mammon. The issue
- 4:33isn't wealth. It's greed, speculation, and the
- 4:36temptation to manipulate systems for personal
- 4:39gain. A powerful question for today. When does
- 4:44ambition become greed? And when does investing
- 4:48become speculation driven by the desire for excessive
- 4:51gain? Biblical stewardship calls us to integrity,
- 4:56honesty, and responsibility, especially in matters
- 4:58of money. A lot to think about, but a lot to
- 5:03look at. Did you know, on September 24, 1896,
- 5:10American author F. Scott Fitzgerald was born.
- 5:14Named after his distant relative, Francis Scott
- 5:17Key, Fitzgerald became one of the defining voices
- 5:21of the Jazz Age. His most famous novel, The Great
- 5:25Gatsby, explored the themes of wealth, status,
- 5:30ambition, appearance versus reality, and the
- 5:34pursuit of the American dream. Ironically, Gatsby
- 5:40wasn't a major success at first, but today it
- 5:44stands as one of the most influential works in
- 5:46American literature. Take any college course
- 5:49in literature, and I guarantee you that is one
- 5:53of your required readings. And when I read it,
- 5:56I said, wow. And I have to remember when this
- 6:00was written. But yeah, really, really good piece
- 6:03of work. But here's our... connection to our
- 6:06church. Success versus significance. Fitzgerald's
- 6:11world shows us that wealth does not guarantee
- 6:14happiness. Status does not ensure fulfillment.
- 6:17Ambition can become an obsession. And appearances
- 6:22can hide emptiness. Mark 8 verse 36 asks the
- 6:29piercing question, What shall it profit a man?
- 6:34if he shall gain the whole world and lose his
- 6:38own soul. The gospel shifts the question from
- 6:42achievement to identity. Not how much I can acquire,
- 6:49but who am I becoming? A three -part message
- 6:55for today, September 24th. Our stories today
- 7:01give us powerful progression in law, money, and
- 7:03meaning. Law reminds us of justice and accountability.
- 7:08Money reminds us of integrity and stewardship.
- 7:11And meaning, probably the most important here,
- 7:14reminds us of the purpose beyond possessions.
- 7:18Possessions come and go. But the meaning of your
- 7:22life should have something much deeper there.
- 7:26And so we end today's Voices of Life. with a
- 7:30question. Are we trying to build a successful
- 7:33life, or are we building a life of meaning? That
- 7:37is the journey of hope. That is the Church for
- 7:40Life. I'm Pastor David. Thank you so much for
- 7:43listening, and we'll see you next time. Thank
- 7:46you for joining us today on the Voices of Life
- 7:49podcast, a ministry of the Church for Life. As
- 7:55we close... May the stories we share strengthen
- 7:58your faith, steady your heart, and remind you
- 8:01that God is present in every chapter of your
- 8:03journey. If this episode encouraged you, share
- 8:07it with someone who needs hope. And until we
- 8:11meet again, walk in truth, stand in courage,
- 8:14and keep listening for the voice that leads you
- 8:17forward. This has been Voices of Life. Peace
- 8:21be with you.
