- 0:54Speaker 2: training Camp. At least the practice portion of the morning
- 0:57Speaker 2: full padded session is behind us. Pittsburgh Steelers getting their
- 1:01Speaker 2: work in here today on campus at Saint Vincent. I'm
- 1:04Speaker 2: at troop alongside Max Starks. We are in the locker room.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I'm subbing in for Rob King, so do not worry.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Mister King will be back with you and back with
- 1:12Speaker 2: Max here later throughout the week. He had his Pittsburgh
- 1:15Speaker 2: Pirate duties here this afternoon as the Buckos wrap up
- 1:19Speaker 2: a four game set in Milwaukee and the Steelers we'll
- 1:23Speaker 2: be wrapping up their eighth day Max. It's been a
- 1:26Speaker 2: full week now here at St. Vincent College. Players reported
- 1:29Speaker 2: last Tuesday, the first day of the heat acclamation period
- 1:33Speaker 2: began last Wednesday for the team. Two padded practices Monday Tuesday,
- 1:38Speaker 2: this week a mock game yesterday, as you informed us
- 1:41Speaker 2: on Wednesday, and here on Thursday. There I guess you
- 1:44Speaker 2: would call it the third padded practice, full padded practice
- 1:47Speaker 2: that took place here earlier today we were talking offense
- 1:51Speaker 2: in our number one so let's talk some defense and
- 1:54Speaker 2: spread the love around on both sides of the ball,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and we'll start up front with the defensive line. And
- 1:58Speaker 2: I mentioned it to you during the break. A player
- 2:00Speaker 2: that stood out to me today was the Steelers free
- 2:03Speaker 2: agent acquisition from the Tennessee Titans in Sebastian Joseph Day.
- 2:07Speaker 2: He is the backup defensive tackle to now Yya Black,
- 2:10Speaker 2: who is your starting defensive tackle. But Sebastian Joseph Day
- 2:14Speaker 2: two pass deflections at the line of scrimmage today that
- 2:17Speaker 2: stood out to me a big target rate in the
- 2:21Speaker 2: middle on that football field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. When
- 2:25Speaker 2: you look at Sebastian Day, six four three and ten
- 2:28Speaker 2: pounds clogging up that middle, and you said at Durm break,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you said, ed, they need these types of veteran, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: role type players on your roster to help you, especially upfront.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and Sebastian Joseph Day is a guy who's been
- 2:41Speaker 3: around this league. He's a journeyman, played in a lot
- 2:43Speaker 3: of different systems, and he's he's a work hard guy.
- 2:46Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:47Speaker 3: You put him in at the defensive end position, you
- 2:49Speaker 3: put him into the detackle position, and he's just going
- 2:51Speaker 3: to get the job done right. He's going to do
- 2:54Speaker 3: his assignment. He's going to do it at a high level,
- 2:56Speaker 3: like we've seen out here in practice so far. Getting
- 2:59Speaker 3: in on place. He's gonna he's gonna jump off the
- 3:01Speaker 3: screen at certain points.
- 3:02Speaker 4: But he's not the all star you're depending on, right.
- 3:05Speaker 3: You know, this isn't Miles Garrett coming into camp by
- 3:07Speaker 3: any stretch of the imagination. But you need those guys
- 3:10Speaker 3: right when your frontline guys need a blow. If Derek
- 3:12Speaker 3: Harmon needs a blow, if Cam Hayward, Keanu Benton needs
- 3:15Speaker 3: a blow. This is a guy that you put him
- 3:17Speaker 3: in and there's no significant drop off. He knows what
- 3:20Speaker 3: to do, he knows how to get there, and he's
- 3:22Speaker 3: going to just do his job to the best of
- 3:25Speaker 3: his abilities.
- 3:26Speaker 4: You need some of those guys.
- 3:27Speaker 3: You don't need the wow guy, the splash guy every
- 3:29Speaker 3: single play and Sebasti Josephday one of the guys we
- 3:31Speaker 3: talked about getting in the conversation period of a pre
- 3:35Speaker 3: dust up area. But he's been solid and he's been
- 3:38Speaker 3: a contributor. He's a guy that's been around the leege.
- 3:41Speaker 4: So he's not gonna get pushed around right by stretch.
- 3:43Speaker 3: He's gonna have a voice, But he also knows what
- 3:45Speaker 3: his role is here and so he's not to be
- 3:47Speaker 3: He's not going to be Cam Hayward. He's not here
- 3:49Speaker 3: to be Cam Hayward by any stretch of the imagination.
- 3:52Speaker 3: But he's here to support him and make sure that
- 3:54Speaker 3: there's no there's no big difference than when Cam's in there,
- 3:58Speaker 3: and he's in there, there will be a different it's
- 4:00Speaker 3: just not a significant one.
- 4:01Speaker 2: There was a lot of talk Max Store in the
- 4:03Speaker 2: Steelers offseason about Keanu Benton moving from that defensive tackle
- 4:06Speaker 2: position to the outside. With the first depth chart that
- 4:10Speaker 2: came out late last night, that move officially made, at
- 4:13Speaker 2: least on paper. We've seen it up here at camp
- 4:15Speaker 2: as well, with Benton moving outside and Ya Black now
- 4:19Speaker 2: moving to the defensive tackle spot. Derek Carmon also in
- 4:22Speaker 2: that defensive line with Cam Heyward. Cam Hayward a veteran
- 4:25Speaker 2: day off. We're presuming he was in straight clothes today, Yeah,
- 4:28Speaker 2: soul I would assume, and you say never assume, right,
- 4:31Speaker 2: but Cam Hayward would have that much needed veteran day
- 4:33Speaker 2: off today. Derek Carmon had a nice practice as well,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and he continues to have a strong camp. Now in
- 4:38Speaker 2: your number two.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And that's where you see kind of the anticipation because
- 4:44Speaker 3: once again this is an anticipatory depth chart. He's going
- 4:48Speaker 3: to take the jump in hear two, hy A Black
- 4:50Speaker 3: is going to take the jump. That's why he got
- 4:52Speaker 3: the starting nod to be defensive tackle. I know it
- 4:54Speaker 3: looks like that on the on the actual depth chart,
- 4:57Speaker 3: but he's a nose right, Okay, let's face he is
- 4:59Speaker 3: not moving out of the side of the guards.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Yeah, just call it a nose.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I know, everybody's got a different thing. And the impact
- 5:07Speaker 3: Guy Rover backer, starbacker.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Blah blah blah. He's a nose tackle. My mama made
- 5:13Speaker 4: him a nose. He gonna be a nose that's it.
- 5:15Speaker 4: That's it.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And so you know, you look at you look at
- 5:17Speaker 3: his backside, he's two ax handles across the backside. That's
- 5:19Speaker 3: a nose tackle, right, And so that's what you want.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And finally we get the move that we've been talking.
- 5:26Speaker 4: About for Keanu Bins since he's been drafted.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Hey man, man can't wait to see him when he
- 5:30Speaker 3: get bumps outside to be a three four. You know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: three or four technique is three four defense, but a
- 5:35Speaker 3: three technique is off the outside edge of the guard.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Four techniques head up on the tackle and then you
- 5:40Speaker 3: have a gap.
- 5:41Speaker 4: He's right there.
- 5:42Speaker 3: He's now on the outer edges of that triumvirent in
- 5:45Speaker 3: the middle, and that's where he was so effective in
- 5:48Speaker 3: college at that's when he did get the opportunities and
- 5:51Speaker 3: sub packages he thrived at that. Now he'll actually formally
- 5:55Speaker 3: be classified into that position.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Which we've been waiting on.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And so now he gets that really because we have
- 6:01Speaker 3: a bona fide nose who can play the middle and
- 6:03Speaker 3: y a black right. And that's one of the key
- 6:05Speaker 3: things on why you wanted to make that move is
- 6:07Speaker 3: because you know some guy's skill set wise are better
- 6:10Speaker 3: positioned for that success. And yes, it shows that he
- 6:12Speaker 3: is behind Cam Hayward. But as we know, we saw
- 6:17Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of the past years. They
- 6:19Speaker 3: love to rotate guys and Demantopeco is no different. He's
- 6:22Speaker 3: a veteran defensive lineman has done that and he's been
- 6:25Speaker 3: that guy that has played the nose and three techniques
- 6:28Speaker 3: and more of a four down Look, trust me, I've
- 6:30Speaker 3: played more than my fair share against fat Palamalu over
- 6:34Speaker 3: there at Cincinnati and uh and he loves that now,
- 6:37Speaker 3: he loves.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Have you nicknamed him that here?
- 6:39Speaker 4: Oh? He was nicknamed that back when we played. No. No,
- 6:41Speaker 4: I played against demodofy hair. He has the hair. Yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 4: and he's a lot bigger than Troy. I mean Troy.
- 6:48Speaker 4: We always said.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Was was a fat kid masquerading as a skinny guy,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and no, he is a fat guy that is masquerading
- 6:54Speaker 3: as a skinny kid.
- 6:54Speaker 4: In Demonopeco.
- 6:55Speaker 2: See, only lineman can refer to each other whether it's
- 6:58Speaker 2: offense or defensive lineman as yes, and not be offended.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Exactly. It's a term of endearment. I mean, heck, you
- 7:04Speaker 3: got a name. It's like, yes, we called you fab,
- 7:06Speaker 3: but then we named you after a Hall of Famer.
- 7:07Speaker 3: I mean, come on, hey, it's a backhanded compliment, but
- 7:11Speaker 3: compliment nonetheless.
- 7:12Speaker 2: That's right, that's a good thing. One rookie on the
- 7:15Speaker 2: death chart two that has worked his way in as
- 7:18Speaker 2: Gabriel Rubio from Notre Dame. Yes, now behind Derek Harmon
- 7:21Speaker 2: on that defensive end spot. Rubio getting some looks up here.
- 7:26Speaker 2: As we said during our first hour, Max Mike McCarthy,
- 7:28Speaker 2: displaying the entire draft class. They're getting a lot of
- 7:31Speaker 2: reps up here at camp and on the defensive side.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You only have a couple to talk to, Robert Spears
- 7:36Speaker 2: Jennings and Dalen Everett in the secondary, which we'll talk
- 7:38Speaker 2: about a bit later with the Steelers secondary, but up front,
- 7:41Speaker 2: there's only one other rookie on that side of the
- 7:43Speaker 2: ball and it's Gabriel Rubio.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Yeah, gave Rubio injured a lot during Notre Dame, so
- 7:48Speaker 3: you didn't really get to see a full compliment of him.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Because I had a couple of Notre Dame games over
- 7:53Speaker 3: the last couple of years, had their playoff game, most
- 7:55Speaker 3: notably two years ago when they played Indiana before Indiana
- 7:58Speaker 3: became the Indiana And so you know, Gabe, I saw
- 8:01Speaker 3: him two years ago and I was like solid, I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 3: the guy has the ability then kind of hampered a
- 8:06Speaker 3: little bit his last year, so kind of a steal
- 8:08Speaker 3: and an unknown that that was more of a deep
- 8:12Speaker 3: cut into the into the draft files of the scouting department,
- 8:15Speaker 3: but a very quality one. And a guy shows that
- 8:18Speaker 3: he's healthy number one, and then he has some moves,
- 8:20Speaker 3: he has some wiggle, he knows how to play the
- 8:22Speaker 3: two gapping scheme and knows knows how to work that
- 8:25Speaker 3: outside edge. So I think a good compliment behind Derek Harmer,
- 8:28Speaker 3: like you said, working on the secondary depth.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Of this team. You feel good putting those things out.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Now, gab Rubio obviously has to go out and prove
- 8:36Speaker 3: that he deserves to be behind Derek. Harmon has not
- 8:38Speaker 3: a Dean Lowry, it's not a Logan Lee insert names
- 8:41Speaker 3: here right of a lot of guys. But he's on
- 8:44Speaker 3: that path and he's another guy that's gonna get an
- 8:47Speaker 3: equal opportunity in this preseason to really show that he
- 8:49Speaker 3: belongs in that in that top six to seven man
- 8:52Speaker 3: rotation of the defensive line, and he.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Will stand out. Gave Rubio at six five three and
- 8:57Speaker 2: twenty one pounds.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yes, still not quite as big as Ya Black, but
- 9:01Speaker 3: still very large or Derek Harmon, but he's close.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And why Yeah Black is another good example. You know,
- 9:07Speaker 2: we're talking about camp phenoms and rookies making a big
- 9:10Speaker 2: impression up here at camp in their first year. You
- 9:13Speaker 2: know Ya Black a year ago, we're talking all about
- 9:16Speaker 2: Maxionichur in the offensive line standing out the first week
- 9:19Speaker 2: of camp. Last year, it was Ya Black that we
- 9:21Speaker 2: were talking about this time standing out here on these
- 9:24Speaker 2: practice fields at Saint Vincent.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, and he was, and he was
- 9:27Speaker 3: going head to head with him and Derek Harmon. You know,
- 9:30Speaker 3: those are the two big bodies that came in as
- 9:33Speaker 3: the young baby boys on the defensive line.
- 9:36Speaker 4: And then you look at early on having to go
- 9:37Speaker 4: to Ya Black as Dereck Harmon was injured.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So that just goes to show you that opportunity, opportunities
- 9:43Speaker 3: are there, it's just you taking advantage of him. I thought,
- 9:46Speaker 3: why a Black did a great job. Now he still
- 9:47Speaker 3: needs to work on some of his leverage things. He
- 9:49Speaker 3: still got to get lower. But he's a guy that
- 9:51Speaker 3: I've always pegged as he's going to make a play,
- 9:55Speaker 3: whether he thought he was going to or not. Like
- 9:57Speaker 3: he's going to fall into it and he's there to
- 9:59Speaker 3: create chaos, which is what you need at that interior
- 10:02Speaker 3: defensive lineman position where you want to see if they
- 10:05Speaker 3: can pass rush. But it's not really my number one prerequisite.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I need you to cause havoc. I need you to
- 10:09Speaker 3: put the center four or five yards in the backfield
- 10:12Speaker 3: and just be a redwood right around around a quarterback.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I need you to force and divert throws and not
- 10:19Speaker 3: let a quarterback stay on his spot that he wants
- 10:21Speaker 3: to put him in an uncomfortable position, and funnel flow
- 10:24Speaker 3: to the outside.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Guys.
- 10:25Speaker 3: That's your pass rushers are your bread winners, right those
- 10:28Speaker 3: get here guys and everybody else is a get near guy.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Cam Hayward is a get here guy because he has
- 10:32Speaker 3: a special skill set has been doing it for a
- 10:34Speaker 3: long time. I feel like I'm I'm talking about you know,
- 10:37Speaker 3: the Liam Neeson movies, right, I have a special set
- 10:40Speaker 3: of acquired skills set.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You get that.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I have a massed over a long career now, you know, Yeah,
- 10:46Speaker 4: I'm scared now, Yeah, exactly so.
- 10:49Speaker 3: But but ya, Black's a guy that can really cause
- 10:52Speaker 3: chaos if he's pissed off angry, because he is a
- 10:55Speaker 3: humongous human being.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Yeah, for those keeping score at home with these sizes,
- 10:58Speaker 2: he's a member of the three hundred club as well.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Six five, three and thirty pounds.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Yeah, paper, sorry, it.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Might be a bit more than that. You're trying to free.
- 11:08Speaker 3: The gut has definitely been free flowing since we've been
- 11:11Speaker 3: out here. I'm like, ah, there's a couple of cheeseburgers. Actually,
- 11:14Speaker 3: you didn't count on the scale that boy. That boy's
- 11:16Speaker 3: easily three point fifty.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I'm with it. Maybe that weight was taken in preschool,
- 11:21Speaker 2: but uh, you know, the linemen are always taught from
- 11:25Speaker 2: a defensive standpoint to your point max, to drive the
- 11:28Speaker 2: offensive lineman back and get to wherever the ball is right. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 2: and if you're lucky enough, maybe you're throwing them into
- 11:34Speaker 2: the ball carrier or a quarterback, or at least getting
- 11:37Speaker 2: around them to free up your edge rushers and your
- 11:39Speaker 2: linebackers to make the play.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Absolutely three four defense.
- 11:42Speaker 3: To understand the schematics of a three to four defense,
- 11:44Speaker 3: right your down linemen are there to clog, so they're
- 11:48Speaker 3: there to storb two blocks so that you're freeing up
- 11:51Speaker 3: your inside backers to where they're not fighting with the
- 11:54Speaker 3: offensive lineman. That's the mark of a good one. And
- 11:56Speaker 3: then you're funneling flow to get the one on ones
- 11:58Speaker 3: on the outside for your edge Russia. So all of
- 12:01Speaker 3: your linebackers are the playmakers. The defensive line are the
- 12:04Speaker 3: goal you know are they're They're the post in the
- 12:06Speaker 3: ground right there. They're those guys that are there to
- 12:09Speaker 3: pull and just.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Distract and take up space.
- 12:12Speaker 3: And we think of a Ya Black if he's engaging
- 12:14Speaker 3: the center and throwing that big hamhowk backside into the guard,
- 12:19Speaker 3: preventing it almost running like a barricade. That's what you
- 12:22Speaker 3: want and that's what he's there for to allow Patrick, Queen, Peyton, Wilson, T. J. Watt,
- 12:27Speaker 3: Alex high Smith, Nick Herby all these other guys on
- 12:29Speaker 3: the house to make the said play.
- 12:32Speaker 4: And then if you make.
- 12:33Speaker 3: The play by default or by accident, it's just a bonus.
- 12:38Speaker 4: It's like when you look at it like man I
- 12:39Speaker 4: just pay for this buffet. But wait, there's more.
- 12:42Speaker 3: You know, there's a there's a fond there's chocolate fondue,
- 12:45Speaker 3: and there's a fondue fountain, and I can.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Dip all this stuff into it and get chocolate cover strawberries.
- 12:49Speaker 3: There's ice cream, soft serve or the scoopable kind, right,
- 12:54Speaker 3: I mean all these little things.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So that's what the D line is meant to do.
- 12:57Speaker 3: They're meant to absorb and create ate an obstacle so
- 13:01Speaker 3: that the rest of the guys can be successful.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Hence why they have that size up front that we're
- 13:05Speaker 2: talking about and height.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and the height is also key to.
- 13:08Speaker 2: More importantly, are you a soft serve or hard ice cream?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Guyilms and cream and cream is my number one, has
- 13:16Speaker 3: been my favorite ice cream since I've been a little
- 13:17Speaker 3: little kid. And then yeah, then soft served with the
- 13:21Speaker 3: accouterments I need. I need the toppings you need like
- 13:24Speaker 3: the sprinkles, Jimmy don't need Jimmy's. I need cookies and cream,
- 13:28Speaker 3: I need caramels. You're going, yeah, I'm going, I'm going
- 13:31Speaker 3: all in.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I'm good stuff.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to go even and listen if you're
- 13:35Speaker 3: if you're if you're on the high level side.
- 13:37Speaker 4: The crumpled butter finger and some of the heath bar,
- 13:39Speaker 4: the little toffee bits.
- 13:41Speaker 2: How about an old fashioned hard cap with either the chocolate, oh,
- 13:44Speaker 2: the magic.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Shell, Yeah, gotta have magic shell.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Magic shell is amazingredous.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, if you get a butterscotch magic shell, Oh, butterscotch.
- 13:50Speaker 4: In heaven heaven. Yeah, I know. Once again, this is
- 13:54Speaker 4: one thing your former office. Lie, it's in there. You
- 13:56Speaker 4: look good now, but every every skinny guy was formerly fat.
- 14:00Speaker 4: It's always hiding the fat guy. That's it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And listen you, at least for us, you know, Thursday
- 14:06Speaker 2: night before a game day on Friday, looking back to
- 14:08Speaker 2: the high school days, you went to the old Country
- 14:09Speaker 2: Buffet or the Buffett.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah see, and we had a place called We had
- 14:14Speaker 3: a place which I'm not sure petting people know. This
- 14:16Speaker 3: is in the South, Quincy's. Quincy's was the buffet spot.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And then if you got fancy, you went to the
- 14:22Speaker 3: Sizzler because you got the never ending salad bar.
- 14:25Speaker 4: So yeah, language big home of the big fat East
- 14:29Speaker 4: Roll was Quincy's. So yeah, I loved it.
- 14:31Speaker 2: You got to get that fuel in you for the
- 14:33Speaker 2: for the coming game.
- 14:34Speaker 4: And then on game day back in Orlando, Florida.
- 14:38Speaker 3: So those of you listening that might be a Florida
- 14:40Speaker 3: native or survivor as I like to call it. There
- 14:44Speaker 3: was a place in Orlando off Orange Blossom Trail Chico Subs.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Every Friday, you win, you went. You ain't got the
- 14:50Speaker 3: loose we called a loose meat cheese steak because it
- 14:52Speaker 3: was ground beef. Wasn't the sirloin and everything else is
- 14:54Speaker 3: fancy up here and the place that's east of here
- 14:57Speaker 3: that made it popular.
- 14:58Speaker 4: But you hat loose movie. Think about that, Yeah, that
- 15:01Speaker 4: place over there.
- 15:02Speaker 3: But uh yeah, you ain't got to lose me's cheese
- 15:05Speaker 3: steak before the games?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Now did you load that up with the onions and
- 15:08Speaker 2: the peppers all the cheese.
- 15:09Speaker 3: And onion peppers, cheese, and then I need it banana
- 15:12Speaker 3: peppers grilled on grilled on there as well.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Gotta have banana have some heat, man.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta get some spice, just a little tang,
- 15:18Speaker 3: a little little spice.
- 15:19Speaker 4: You need the tongue that need the tongue to get
- 15:21Speaker 4: stung a little bit.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Max Starks and I we're just gonna start doing a
- 15:23Speaker 2: cooking show here. I know. Listen, I'm like a little
- 15:26Speaker 2: steer football.
- 15:26Speaker 3: We'll talk food. I've been pitching me. I was like,
- 15:28Speaker 3: y'all just need to unleash me on a tailgate. Let's
- 15:30Speaker 3: go whatever city we go to, and I will get
- 15:33Speaker 3: the goods.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I love it. I'm getting hungry. That's the Steelers defensive
- 15:37Speaker 2: line and food talk. We'll do dor food talk when
- 15:39Speaker 2: we come back, but let's get into the linebackers. You
- 15:41Speaker 2: mentioned the edge rushers a bit too, as well as
- 15:44Speaker 2: the secondary. Here in our number two, he's Max Starks.

- 17:00Speaker 2: Steelers Nation Radio and the Steelers Audio Network. And Max
- 17:04Speaker 2: and I are talking food during the show. During the
- 17:06Speaker 2: break man, we're getting hungry.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Yeah we are, we are, and listen, truth be told,
- 17:11Speaker 3: all the guys are over there enjoying lunch right now.
- 17:13Speaker 3: We're just simply postulating about lunch and what it could
- 17:17Speaker 3: be over there.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Now.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I will say this one of the UH one of
- 17:20Speaker 3: the ads to the lunch room menu, which I was
- 17:22Speaker 3: happy was off the menu for about two years and
- 17:24Speaker 3: I'd had to pay one of the nuns off to
- 17:26Speaker 3: go sneap into the UH into like the staff dining area.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Soup love soup one of my one of my favorite things.
- 17:35Speaker 3: And I don't under people are like, oh, it's a
- 17:37Speaker 3: winter time.
- 17:38Speaker 4: No it's not.
- 17:38Speaker 3: It is a year round thing. I grew up as
- 17:40Speaker 3: a kid in Florida. I'm with you, man, and I
- 17:42Speaker 3: ate soup all the time. There's a reason why my
- 17:44Speaker 3: mom was a Campbells Chunky soup mom because I love soup.
- 17:47Speaker 3: So they added soup back in yesterday was a chicken tortilla.
- 17:51Speaker 3: They had chicken and rice. They've had a chicken lemon orzo.
- 17:53Speaker 3: They've got all these great soups over there. So that's
- 17:57Speaker 3: one of the things that I do still indulge. I
- 17:59Speaker 3: still love a good soup, and I make some good
- 18:02Speaker 3: soups and chili's so I can appreciate that. So that's
- 18:05Speaker 3: back on the menu. So some guys are over there
- 18:07Speaker 3: indulging and enjoying soup.
- 18:08Speaker 2: My wife always looks at me like I'm crazy when
- 18:10Speaker 2: it's July and I want to make chili for dinner. Absolutely,
- 18:14Speaker 2: and then taking a step further and do some hot dogs.
- 18:16Speaker 2: And you have your chili dogs with it right, you
- 18:18Speaker 2: can both put the cheese on their of the onion,
- 18:20Speaker 2: get it ready to go.
- 18:21Speaker 4: But you score your hot dogs when you cook.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Them, meaning on like a grill.
- 18:25Speaker 3: No, no, do you like cut the little precut slices
- 18:27Speaker 3: and then you're grilling it and then it kind of
- 18:29Speaker 3: opens up, so now you got like little pockets when
- 18:31Speaker 3: you put the cheese on it.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I'm just saying, I need to do score it, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 4: I do.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I do a little like diamond cuts on the hot dog,
- 18:38Speaker 3: just to give a little extra burst there.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Listen, the regular grill outside hot dogs great, but when
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're inside and you do like the hibachi grill, right,
- 18:46Speaker 2: you put the flat top action. Yeah, for those Pittsburgh's
- 18:49Speaker 2: out there from Oakland, the O in Oakland and pitt
- 18:52Speaker 2: Campus right, all the guys.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Once again, it was one of my greatest sadnesses was
- 19:00Speaker 3: when the O was gone.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I was trying to do the quick math in my head. Max,
- 19:03Speaker 2: And yeah, you would have been around because that was
- 19:05Speaker 2: only that's only been four or five years at that.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, I listen as a rookie, and that
- 19:11Speaker 3: you have realized I was a year out of college,
- 19:13Speaker 3: so college people were still on my radar as fun
- 19:16Speaker 3: hangout spots like I was. I was, I was a
- 19:18Speaker 3: college alumnus, but I definitely you know, listen, I could
- 19:21Speaker 3: have fit in there as a fifth sixth year guy,
- 19:23Speaker 3: you know. Yeah, so I spent a lot of time
- 19:26Speaker 3: on Pitt's campus, and the O was one of my spots.
- 19:29Speaker 4: They used to hit.
- 19:29Speaker 2: It.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Used to also hit that little bar right across the way,
- 19:31Speaker 3: a little bit up on the left.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I can't think of the name of it right now.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I popped in there, Listen, I was.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I was their shady side back in the day, you know,
- 19:38Speaker 3: be at the saloons and the taverns over there.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, I was twenty three years old.
- 19:42Speaker 2: There were some good spots.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Yeah, there was great spots back in there.
- 19:44Speaker 3: And yes, the O and Primantes, you know, were the
- 19:47Speaker 3: two where if it was a good it was a
- 19:49Speaker 3: good night and you and you had a couple of
- 19:51Speaker 3: adult orange juices, you know, in your in your system,
- 19:54Speaker 3: you gotta go get something to soak it up.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you two quick questions on the
- 19:58Speaker 2: food subject, and then we will get back to promise.
- 20:00Speaker 4: We'll get back to the backers, I promise.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Listen, this is what happens when you put a couple
- 20:04Speaker 2: of lime in together. Uh, favorite soup and favorite permany
- 20:08Speaker 2: brother sandwich.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Okay, favorite soup.
- 20:12Speaker 2: That's a big one because there's.
- 20:14Speaker 3: So many different So my go to win in doubt,
- 20:18Speaker 3: I love chicken soup, of course, So I like chicken
- 20:22Speaker 3: soup because it's flexibility. I can throw rice in there,
- 20:25Speaker 3: and I can also throw noodles in there, so I
- 20:27Speaker 3: can have a chicken noodle or chicken rice soup. So
- 20:29Speaker 3: I make a good chicken right, I make a good
- 20:31Speaker 3: chicken soup base. Then I can then add whatever I want.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I'll take day leftover rice, throw it in there, or
- 20:37Speaker 3: I'll take I'll take some spaghetti leftovers. My Darter's a
- 20:39Speaker 3: little spaghetti. Throw it in there, chop up the noodles,
- 20:42Speaker 3: and it's healthy. So I think it's the most flexible.
- 20:45Speaker 3: It a healthy option.
- 20:46Speaker 4: I use a little you know, I do a little
- 20:48Speaker 4: extra in there.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I like mine a little spicy, so you're gonna have
- 20:51Speaker 3: some cayenne pepper, a little bit of hot sauce in there, give.
- 20:53Speaker 4: It a little kick.
- 20:55Speaker 3: But if I'm picking a soup like going to a wrestler,
- 20:58Speaker 3: clam chowder, lam chowder is my number one going out
- 21:02Speaker 3: or having someone else do it for me. Soup just
- 21:04Speaker 3: because I don't have the cream right, because I wanted
- 21:07Speaker 3: a little lot of it's a lot of work to
- 21:09Speaker 3: get that cream just right. So I haven't perfected that yet,
- 21:12Speaker 3: but but yeah, those are probably the two. And then
- 21:14Speaker 3: when I was with the Steelers at our facility, we
- 21:16Speaker 3: did soup. We had two soups every day. Mullicatani soup
- 21:19Speaker 3: was my favorite, the Indian dish soup mo rest in Peace,
- 21:23Speaker 3: Rest in Heaven. Moe was one of our was one
- 21:25Speaker 3: of our head chefs over there. He made an awesome
- 21:28Speaker 3: Mullagatani soup that was my favorite. Yeah, it's anos lentil
- 21:31Speaker 3: based and it's it's a really good soup. So yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 3: so those are those are my suits now Perrandy Sandwiches,
- 21:36Speaker 3: ah Man, I mean, I can't really go past the
- 21:39Speaker 3: corn beef.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yes, that's that's just that's a good one.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I mean the Postromi was good, but but you throw
- 21:47Speaker 3: a corn beef with some Swiss on there and and
- 21:49Speaker 3: then the fries and slaw.
- 21:51Speaker 4: That was that was hangover medicine.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Not my My grandmother used to always make a really
- 21:55Speaker 2: good beef vegetable soup growing up, like very hardy with
- 21:58Speaker 2: big chunks of beef and vegetable.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Little potatoes, potato.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Thick, homemade chopped up potatoes. So I was always a
- 22:04Speaker 2: fan of that. Of course, you can't go wrong with
- 22:06Speaker 2: old fashioned checking noodle, he said. But I'm a strummi
- 22:08Speaker 2: and cheese type guy. Yeah, so yeah, good stuff.
- 22:11Speaker 4: So you know, and my thing is like Swiss.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I'm always on the fence about Swiss because the flavor
- 22:16Speaker 3: of Swiss is not as decadent as a cheddar or guda.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Or a monster.
- 22:21Speaker 3: It's acquired and it's not as great a melting cheese. Right,
- 22:25Speaker 3: it takes a wild melt, it takes a wild amount.
- 22:27Speaker 2: You got to get its form.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta do it just right.
- 22:29Speaker 3: So that's why I've always been an extra sharp cheddar,
- 22:32Speaker 3: smoke gooda guy when it comes to that. So yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 3: so once again, this is this is why you get
- 22:38Speaker 3: when you get two limon together.
- 22:39Speaker 4: You're going to get this me a wolf.
- 22:41Speaker 3: For years, as our listeners know, we have had endless
- 22:45Speaker 3: conversations about every amalgamation of food there is.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I don't even want to talk about Steelers now. I
- 22:50Speaker 2: just want to spend the next half hours. Yeah, but
- 22:54Speaker 2: let's do get back to the Black and Gold. And
- 22:56Speaker 2: we talked to Lineman before break first hour. We were
- 22:58Speaker 2: talking offense. So let's look at the linebackers now. So
- 23:01Speaker 2: far through camp we're a full weekend, so we're trying
- 23:03Speaker 2: to get Max's evaluation. So far, there's been a little
- 23:06Speaker 2: bit of movement on the death chart. Take it for
- 23:07Speaker 2: what you will. It's really a formality. They have to
- 23:10Speaker 2: issue these death charts at this point. Does the NFL
- 23:13Speaker 2: require the Steelers to do But looking, you know, no
- 23:16Speaker 2: changes up front. You got TJ and Alex Highsmith on
- 23:19Speaker 2: the outside. Of course Nick Herbig Jack Sawyer right behind them.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Her Big is going to be a big part of
- 23:24Speaker 2: that rotation. But it's the middle linebackers. I want to
- 23:27Speaker 2: get your thoughts with Patrick Queen Peyton Wilson. From my
- 23:30Speaker 2: vantage point, Max have had good camps so far, especially
- 23:33Speaker 2: this week. Patrick Queen had to pick six the other
- 23:36Speaker 2: day today. Peyton Wilson did some good things coming down
- 23:40Speaker 2: and getting to the ball carries. I think him and
- 23:44Speaker 2: him and Jalen Warren had a good, good exchange on
- 23:48Speaker 2: one of Yeah, good thought there's the word.
- 23:51Speaker 4: To the ground. Yes, thought it was a good thud.
- 23:54Speaker 2: On the flip side of that though, too, Nick Herbig
- 23:57Speaker 2: got picked up on a blitz by Jalen Warren and
- 23:59Speaker 2: Warren picked him up.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I mean he hit I mean, listen he's a ballard buster.
- 24:02Speaker 3: That's that's that's what me and well Wolf designated him
- 24:05Speaker 3: the ballard buster, and we talked about that backs on
- 24:07Speaker 3: backer type of drill that we haven't seen yet. But
- 24:11Speaker 3: I can't wait if it gets instituted or not into
- 24:14Speaker 3: the into the screen. But that's where Jalen Woreon made
- 24:16Speaker 3: his name. I mean, he's been the ballard buster and
- 24:19Speaker 3: he did that against Nick Herbig.
- 24:21Speaker 4: So good to see that. The skill sets still there,
- 24:23Speaker 4: not too rusty.
- 24:24Speaker 2: That's right. Oh, it's it's there. We've seen it. We've
- 24:26Speaker 2: seen it this week. The skill set is definitely there
- 24:28Speaker 2: for him. But on the inside linebacker spots behind Queen
- 24:31Speaker 2: and Wilson is Cole Holcomb and Carson Bruner now makes
- 24:35Speaker 2: his way on the deaf chart and Malik Harrison, the
- 24:39Speaker 2: free agent acquisition from a year ago from you know,
- 24:41Speaker 2: coming over from the Colts. I believe Baltimore was a
- 24:44Speaker 2: Baltimore where I.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Mean he technically was the Colts at one point, but
- 24:47Speaker 3: now it's Ravens.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't like to talk of that team, right,
- 24:50Speaker 2: we don't have birds.
- 24:51Speaker 4: We don't have birds.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We don't mention that name. But Malik Harrison who was
- 24:55Speaker 2: with Cole Holcomb most of last year and again he
- 24:58Speaker 2: started the season out on the i R last year
- 25:00Speaker 2: come on till about mid season is now third team
- 25:03Speaker 2: at least right now as we speaking. Again, this is
- 25:05Speaker 2: going to change as we go throughout, but I thought
- 25:07Speaker 2: it was big that Carson Bruner, who has made his
- 25:09Speaker 2: name with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a rookie last year
- 25:11Speaker 2: and onto this team as a special teamers, is now
- 25:14Speaker 2: maybe making some movement as an inside linebacker.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I think new staff, new opportunity. And so you know,
- 25:21Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy didn't bring Malie Harrison in no, and he
- 25:25Speaker 3: didn't draft Carson Bruner, but they're on this roster and
- 25:28Speaker 3: he is looking at them for what are they going
- 25:32Speaker 3: to fill the role that I need them to do. So,
- 25:35Speaker 3: once again, Malie Harrison's a veteran, so I don't think
- 25:38Speaker 3: it really matters that he's on third or second team
- 25:40Speaker 3: for all intents and purposes. But for Carson Bruner, it's
- 25:42Speaker 3: an opportunity to step up and see if you can
- 25:44Speaker 3: make that jump from year one to year two. Can
- 25:46Speaker 3: you be more than just a valuable special teams piece.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Can you go contribute in every down situations. Can you
- 25:52Speaker 3: be the guy that Peyton Wilson is out? Can you
- 25:55Speaker 3: jump in and fill that void next to Patrick Queen?
- 25:58Speaker 3: Right and Cole Holcome we know can do it, he
- 26:00Speaker 3: just hasn't been healthy. And Cole's a guy. I mean,
- 26:03Speaker 3: if we're looking at that five guys, I mean Cole
- 26:07Speaker 3: Hulkam is a thumper in that group, right, you know
- 26:09Speaker 3: Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson great sideline to sideline ranging can take,
- 26:12Speaker 3: can take a back out of the backfield, can cover
- 26:15Speaker 3: and then they are going to hit you if you
- 26:16Speaker 3: try and run outside zone, right, they can. They get
- 26:19Speaker 3: chew up a lot of ground really fast. But talking
- 26:21Speaker 3: about that a gap filler, that a land In Roberts
- 26:24Speaker 3: thumper shazier tight. Yeah, that that he's he's a gap,
- 26:30Speaker 3: a plugger as I like to call it.
- 26:31Speaker 4: He's gonna fill the a.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Gap and he's gonna bring a little bit of thud
- 26:34Speaker 3: with him. So Emily Carris in same way, I think
- 26:37Speaker 3: with Malik, you kind of know who he is, a
- 26:39Speaker 3: little bit more of a liability in the past covers
- 26:42Speaker 3: outside of zone. He's not gonna be your man cover
- 26:44Speaker 3: guy like the other guys had the capability of so now,
- 26:47Speaker 3: Kurston Brune, can you go and can you be a
- 26:49Speaker 3: little bit more than that? Can you be an a
- 26:51Speaker 3: gap filler? Can you also take a guy off the ball?
- 26:53Speaker 3: Can you take a tight end up the seam and
- 26:55Speaker 3: not get lost in the sauce. Those are the things
- 26:57Speaker 3: that they're gonna be evaluating, and it's good to have
- 27:00Speaker 3: this opportunity for young guy.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Hey, listen, run with the two. Show me what you got.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Yeah, see if you can be see if you can
- 27:05Speaker 3: be a hand in the pole guy, not just on
- 27:07Speaker 3: fourth downs and dead ball situations, but can you can
- 27:10Speaker 3: you kick in for a second and third down as well?
- 27:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Because you know, in Carson Berner, and credit to him
- 27:16Speaker 2: throughout last season and even this past offseason going into
- 27:19Speaker 2: this camp, he wasn't in my you know, when I
- 27:21Speaker 2: looked at eight linebackers in that room, TJ. Wat Patrick,
- 27:24Speaker 2: Queen Peyton Wilson, Alex high Smith, Nick her Big Jack
- 27:27Speaker 2: Sawyer for sure, Cole Holcombe, and Malike Harrison. I looked
- 27:31Speaker 2: at more as Carson Berner is the special teams guy.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yes he's a linebacker, but he's more special teams Max. Well, now,
- 27:36Speaker 2: maybe this conversation switches and he is part of that
- 27:39Speaker 2: eight as potentially being with the linebackers. Oh, guys, by
- 27:44Speaker 2: the way, I'm a linebacker. I'm an inside guy. I
- 27:46Speaker 2: can play this position too. At least for the coaches,
- 27:50Speaker 2: the initial death chart puts him there at that inside linebacker.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I think this is important because you have a lot
- 27:56Speaker 3: more talent in camp this year, so you do so
- 28:00Speaker 3: whether I keep a ninth linebacker, a fourth running back,
- 28:04Speaker 3: a sixth wide receiver, eighth defensive back, this is where
- 28:09Speaker 3: that matters.
- 28:10Speaker 2: The numbers game.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a numbers game.
- 28:12Speaker 3: So if you can insert yourself into the too deep
- 28:16Speaker 3: of a core position, that saves you and you're not
- 28:20Speaker 3: the last four guys on the roster. Right, we always
- 28:22Speaker 3: talk about this. Forty nine through fifty three is the
- 28:25Speaker 3: one where you're like, okay, this is where what's the
- 28:28Speaker 3: intangible value, what's the flexibility?
- 28:30Speaker 4: You can move yourself up that list.
- 28:32Speaker 3: And be the forty seventh, forty eighth, forty fifth guy
- 28:35Speaker 3: on the list because you've solidified yourself as a guy
- 28:39Speaker 3: who can play a core position but has core four upside.
- 28:44Speaker 4: That's what you want. I think that's what we're gonna
- 28:45Speaker 4: see here. A lot of decisions.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Gonna be made about not necessarily can you just be
- 28:49Speaker 3: a core four guy for me, Caden Wegen, but can
- 28:52Speaker 3: you be the fifth wide receiver as well? I need
- 28:54Speaker 3: a guy who can play the regular stuff as well
- 28:57Speaker 3: as give me a little bit in the specials game.
- 29:00Speaker 2: At the Steelers secondary, Jamel Dean comes over from Tampa
- 29:03Speaker 2: Bay opposite side Joey Porter Junior.
- 29:05Speaker 4: We know JPJ on.
- 29:06Speaker 2: The pup puplist, though today I was watching JPJ and Ramsey.
- 29:10Speaker 2: They were out there getting some movement starting with the
- 29:12Speaker 2: Wills a bit on the practice practice fields here at
- 29:15Speaker 2: Saint Vincent College. Deshaun Elliott's back today. Elliott got more
- 29:19Speaker 2: work today Max than he has so far this camp.
- 29:21Speaker 2: That's also another good sign for the Steeler secondary.
- 29:23Speaker 3: No, absolutely, I mean and listen, it's it's gonna be
- 29:28Speaker 3: Jakwan Brisker and Deshaun Elliott back there. And I think
- 29:32Speaker 3: you know, when you're talking about JPJ, who's the guy
- 29:34Speaker 3: opposite him. But I think Jamel Dean, as advertised, Sante
- 29:39Speaker 3: Samuel rounding back into form a guy that was a
- 29:41Speaker 3: late pick at the end of November, and he's had
- 29:44Speaker 3: a heck of a camp, a lot of opportunity because
- 29:46Speaker 3: Joey's been out. So now I'm like, dang, we got
- 29:49Speaker 3: we got three top flight number one corners on this roster.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And then, like you said, you throw in a Dayalen Evert,
- 29:55Speaker 3: you're throwing a Ray Shawn Jenkins.
- 29:56Speaker 4: You throw in all these other guys.
- 29:58Speaker 3: And we know Jalen Ramsey is going to be the
- 30:00Speaker 3: nickel slash whatever you need him to be defensive back guy. Right,
- 30:04Speaker 3: He's going to start wherever he wants to start, So
- 30:06Speaker 3: we're not worried about that.
- 30:08Speaker 4: So you're right.
- 30:09Speaker 3: You look at what Deshaun Elliott brings to this and
- 30:11Speaker 3: like you said, you know, going into last year until injury,
- 30:15Speaker 3: he was he was. He was headbuster, no doubt about it.
- 30:18Speaker 3: He was going to clean your clock. And that's what
- 30:20Speaker 3: you need that enforce her on the back end. So
- 30:22Speaker 3: now you bring in Jakwan Brisker from Chicago and he
- 30:25Speaker 3: has that same tangentle We saw how many plays did
- 30:27Speaker 3: we see him covering over the top ready to make
- 30:29Speaker 3: a play. If receiver would have came down with the football,
- 30:31Speaker 3: that might have been one of those one of those
- 30:33Speaker 3: hospital balls if he catches it. Because Jaquan Brisker was
- 30:36Speaker 3: right in position, and that's what you want in your safeties.
- 30:39Speaker 2: He had a couple past the flexus day, more than
- 30:41Speaker 2: one the one that we saw together. There was one
- 30:43Speaker 2: earlier in practice too, right in front of us down here.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It was a double coverage situation. I don't know it
- 30:47Speaker 2: was Roman Wilson or DK might have been DK well.
- 30:50Speaker 4: And the one across the deep middle where he reached
- 30:52Speaker 4: up and.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Almost had it out.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah.
- 30:55Speaker 2: He's had a good camp too, Jaquan Brisker and we
- 30:58Speaker 2: expected that Deshaun Elliott more reps today than he has. Again,
- 31:02Speaker 2: they're slowly working him back from that injury from last year.
- 31:05Speaker 2: He's with the walkthroughs. He's always out there.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:07Speaker 2: When it came to the physicality, you saw him on
- 31:09Speaker 2: the speed drill, Yeah, he was, he was. You know,
- 31:11Speaker 2: they're trying to work him more into that. Jalen Ramsey
- 31:14Speaker 2: on the deaf chart. Also with the nickelback, the nickel
- 31:17Speaker 2: cornerback position for Jalen Ramsey being worked in. Yeah, let's
- 31:21Speaker 2: take a quick break. When we come back, we will
- 31:23Speaker 2: start to wind things down here in the locker room.
- 31:25Speaker 2: We'll talk more Pittsburgh Steelers defense and the secondary we'll
- 31:28Speaker 2: get into some of the conversations of the second teamers.
- 31:31Speaker 2: You mentioned Dalen Everett. I want to get your thoughts
- 31:33Speaker 2: on him so far in this camp in Robert Spears
- 31:35Speaker 2: Jennings another rookie that's been in with Brendan Eccles as well,
- 31:40Speaker 2: getting a lot of reps out here at Saint Vincent.
- 31:42Speaker 2: He's Max Starks. I'm at troop in for Rob King

- 32:49Speaker 2: Wrapping up in the locker room here this afternoon, on
- 32:53Speaker 2: day number eight of continuing coverage of Steelers training Camp
- 32:57Speaker 2: twenty twenty six right here on Steelers Nation Radio in
- 32:59Speaker 2: the Steelers Audio Network. I'm at troop in for Rob
- 33:02Speaker 2: King here this afternoon in the locker room with his
- 33:05Speaker 2: partner Max Starks. And Max we have talked offense, we've
- 33:09Speaker 2: talked defense as far as where we are a weekend.
- 33:12Speaker 2: This is day number eight of practices. The team reported
- 33:16Speaker 2: here at the Saint Fencent College last Tuesday, So if
- 33:19Speaker 2: you look at it from that standpoint, we're wrapping up
- 33:21Speaker 2: week number two. Man, you could spin us however you want,
- 33:25Speaker 2: day number eight of eight practices, but day number ten
- 33:28Speaker 2: since they've been here in Westmoreland County, who knows. But
- 33:32Speaker 2: we are over a week now, and I wanted to
- 33:34Speaker 2: ask you who's some of your camp standouts that have
- 33:37Speaker 2: kind of caught your eyes so far? And I think
- 33:39Speaker 2: we've probably talked about most of them up to this
- 33:41Speaker 2: point being on the air for two hours, But yeah,
- 33:44Speaker 2: who maybe on both sides of the ball, give me
- 33:46Speaker 2: an offensive guy and a defensive guy.
- 33:48Speaker 4: All right, just one right?
- 33:49Speaker 2: Sure, I know there's a bunch.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a bunch. Okay, so or give me a bunch.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I don't we still have some time?
- 33:55Speaker 4: I mean we still got time. Okay.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Offensively, Maxianachure right has been a camp stand out so far, easily,
- 34:05Speaker 3: And I'm gonna also throw in yep, he's supposed to be.
- 34:11Speaker 3: He got compensated as such. But I also like Rico
- 34:15Speaker 3: Daddle right now. I think he's jumped out and been
- 34:19Speaker 3: kind of as advertised in that moment.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting too because we've talked about it during
- 34:24Speaker 2: our midday show here on SNR. But the first tots,
- 34:28Speaker 2: the first carries of each practice so far has been
- 34:31Speaker 2: Rico Dawdle, not Jalen Lorn. It's been Rico Daddle that's
- 34:33Speaker 2: gotten the first couple carries. Now, granted, but I think
- 34:36Speaker 2: if you were doing a snap count or a carry count,
- 34:38Speaker 2: I'm sure it's more fifty to fifty by the end.
- 34:40Speaker 2: But hey, Rico's getting a lot of those totes up front.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Yeah, they're trying to get him up to speed and
- 34:44Speaker 3: make sure he's ready to rock and roll in this
- 34:46Speaker 3: offense because like I said, I mean, I think you
- 34:47Speaker 3: look at them as one A, one B and mix
- 34:49Speaker 3: and match whatever. I think they'll get series that they'll
- 34:53Speaker 3: get to go and kind of get stretches to get
- 34:56Speaker 3: themselves into game mode and then whoever's a hot and
- 35:00Speaker 3: I think it's kind of how you have to view
- 35:01Speaker 3: it with that, with that running back room.
- 35:03Speaker 4: But yeah, like you said, I've loved what I've seen.
- 35:06Speaker 4: I mean, Jalen Warren I think has been my camp
- 35:09Speaker 4: stand out for like three years in a row.
- 35:11Speaker 3: But rightfully so yeah, but I mean, but I've now
- 35:14Speaker 3: come to I now have an expectation and come to
- 35:17Speaker 3: expect it from him. So that's why I can't really
- 35:19Speaker 3: give him Camp stand out because this is who he
- 35:23Speaker 3: is and he's going to stand out regardless.
- 35:26Speaker 4: So no knock on Jalen. But I don't know Rico.
- 35:30Speaker 3: And Rico jumps off the page to me when I
- 35:32Speaker 3: watch film, he jumps off the screen at you.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Has certain moments, and.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Like you said, the fact that he's getting opportunities and
- 35:40Speaker 3: there's trust building there with the offense, not only with
- 35:42Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy but with Aaron Rodgers and some of the
- 35:44Speaker 3: play calling. You know, and Angelico has a lot of
- 35:47Speaker 3: faith in him, So I think that's why I kind
- 35:49Speaker 3: of have to put him in that category because he's
- 35:51Speaker 3: newer to me, and he's newer to.
- 35:53Speaker 4: The Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Faithful that's out here watching the practices, you're like, who
- 35:57Speaker 3: thirteen once again? Wide receiver number in the backfield, just
- 36:01Speaker 3: like we see Levi Wentz running back number on the outside.
- 36:05Speaker 2: We're old school guys, man.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Yes, if your additional numbering system.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Please twenty twenty, not even past forty. I don't want
- 36:11Speaker 2: to see a running back four back. We can go
- 36:13Speaker 2: in the four, yeah, we can go in the forties,
- 36:14Speaker 2: but not running back.
- 36:16Speaker 4: No.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Thirties is the top. Thirty nine is the top of that.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Willie Parker is as high as you're allowed to go.
- 36:21Speaker 2: And we can give you a twenty Caleb Johnson, that's what.
- 36:23Speaker 4: That doesn't bother.
- 36:24Speaker 3: But you know what, that's the range. That's it, Caleb
- 36:26Speaker 3: Johnson and Willie Parker, that's your range.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Get in there.
- 36:29Speaker 3: And of course can't touch number thirty two, so don't
- 36:31Speaker 3: even think about it.
- 36:32Speaker 4: That has touched down.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Jesus So Franco Harris is the only thirty two that
- 36:37Speaker 3: will ever down the thirty two here for the.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Steelers, and Roman Wilson has been a popular target from
- 36:43Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers on the first few reps too, so we
- 36:45Speaker 2: talked about Rico getting the first totes out of the
- 36:47Speaker 2: backfield from a receiving standpoint. Roman has been found early
- 36:50Speaker 2: and often from Aaron Rodgers, and I think there's something
- 36:52Speaker 2: to be said there too.
- 36:53Speaker 4: He's gotten the bulk of it. So I love the
- 36:56Speaker 4: views that we've gotten of Roman Wilson.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Obviously there's some still schematic things got to work out.
- 37:00Speaker 3: But if we're talking about standing out, who surprised me
- 37:03Speaker 3: at Perry?
- 37:05Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we're running.
- 37:06Speaker 3: With the second and third units and a lot of
- 37:08Speaker 3: a lot of the two minute drills at Perry's been
- 37:11Speaker 3: at this, so there's a lot of faith that's building
- 37:13Speaker 3: with the young quarterbacks with him. So he's a guy
- 37:16Speaker 3: that stood out to me. Like you said, he's gonna
- 37:18Speaker 3: be one of those fringe guys. I'm not saying this
- 37:20Speaker 3: is frontline start. He's not knocking DK metcalf or Michael
- 37:23Speaker 3: Pittman out of a job. But we're talking about guys
- 37:24Speaker 3: who yeah, exactly, but a guy who's shown opportunity, has
- 37:28Speaker 3: shown promise at Perry's probably another guy along with Roman Wilson,
- 37:32Speaker 3: just because we're getting extended looks at Roman in a
- 37:35Speaker 3: lot of multitude of situations to see if he can
- 37:37Speaker 3: handle that caseload as a slot receiver. But at Perry
- 37:41Speaker 3: deeper down in the in the deep cuts of the vinyls.
- 37:44Speaker 3: I think I like him at that wide receiver position
- 37:46Speaker 3: when he's shown me.
- 37:47Speaker 2: And to go along with that.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Max.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Not so much today, but in previous practices. Another guy's
- 37:52Speaker 2: been Brandon Smith. Ye.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Smith has gotten a lot of looks as well.
- 37:56Speaker 3: And he's a good big body guy, like he stands
- 37:59Speaker 3: out when he's staying there, talk about it, get off
- 38:01Speaker 3: the bus team type of guy.
- 38:02Speaker 4: He looks that part and he's gotten he's gotten some
- 38:04Speaker 4: burn as well.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Brandon Smith at six two two fifteen, Yeah good.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Not a real good tight end, but a very big receiver.
- 38:13Speaker 4: Yeah exactly.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm on the defensive side.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Defensive side of the ball, you know what I mean.
- 38:20Speaker 3: I mean, all right, ya has been standing out. Sebastian
- 38:23Speaker 3: Joseph Day. I think we've talked about him a lot.
- 38:26Speaker 3: I think he's been one that's brought some energy, brings
- 38:29Speaker 3: a little zest, little Jonah to the to the defensive
- 38:33Speaker 3: side of the ball, a little little extra, you know,
- 38:35Speaker 3: Cajun seasoning there, little Tony saturi Ye to the defensive.
- 38:39Speaker 4: I like what he's done on there.
- 38:41Speaker 3: I would also say another guy that's that's jumped out
- 38:44Speaker 3: in that, Carson Brunner has been a guy like you said,
- 38:47Speaker 3: there's no reason why, there's no surprise why he got
- 38:50Speaker 3: second on the chart. I think a couple of times,
- 38:52Speaker 3: especially in these drills, like he's butting up in the
- 38:55Speaker 3: in the actual a gap, he's having good chase pursuit.
- 38:58Speaker 3: He carried off on a on a pass to to
- 39:00Speaker 3: Travis Homer, so he took him out of the backfield
- 39:03Speaker 3: and had a good pass defense against him in that
- 39:05Speaker 3: two minute drill. So Carsion Brunner starting to stick out
- 39:09Speaker 3: in that group of Jawan Brisker Man.
- 39:11Speaker 4: God he experience as advertised out listen.
- 39:15Speaker 3: I had him last year twice because we had the
- 39:17Speaker 3: Steelers against the Bears, and he stood out in that
- 39:20Speaker 3: game against US and defended a lot of Mason's passes
- 39:23Speaker 3: in that game and he was all over the place.
- 39:26Speaker 4: But also I had the Cleveland Chicago game.
- 39:29Speaker 3: A couple of weeks after that, and it was literally
- 39:32Speaker 3: the coldest game I think I've ever called to experience
- 39:35Speaker 3: the environment, because it was negative five outside and Chicago.
- 39:40Speaker 3: If you've never been there, open air booth like a
- 39:44Speaker 3: garage door, great, this is what we're talking about. And
- 39:47Speaker 3: no functioning heater really except for in one focalized spot
- 39:52Speaker 3: out of the ceiling was I literally was wearing my
- 39:55Speaker 3: producer's mittens and I had to put on an extra
- 39:59Speaker 3: pair of socks, and then I had to borrow an
- 40:01Speaker 3: extra jacket. I literally just had a beanie and a
- 40:04Speaker 3: and an electric vest and that was not enough because
- 40:07Speaker 3: that wind was cutting through my soul. But Jakawhan Brisker
- 40:10Speaker 3: couldn't have told he was called out there. He was
- 40:11Speaker 3: all our place, just giving Shador Sanders fits. So he's
- 40:14Speaker 3: a guy that I had thoughts about, Hey, how's.
- 40:17Speaker 4: He going to institute?
- 40:17Speaker 3: He has fit in perfectly with the Steelers identity for
- 40:21Speaker 3: a secondary guy and a guy who's explosive, but it
- 40:24Speaker 3: could also.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Is rangy as well in a San Samuel junior.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah, Santa, I mean he might be at the top
- 40:29Speaker 2: of everything.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he's probably my number one camp standout
- 40:33Speaker 3: period just overall. Yeah, he's been playing excellent since Joey's
- 40:36Speaker 3: been indisposed as well as Jalen. He's got a lot
- 40:39Speaker 3: of those opposite Jamel Dean first team reps and he's
- 40:42Speaker 3: answered the call you had, like you he hear DK's
- 40:45Speaker 3: name called.
- 40:45Speaker 4: But you don't really hear dksed like it could be.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Yep, correct, Max, I enjoyed it with you. Thanks for
- 40:50Speaker 2: letting me summon for Rob today. We'll hopefully get a chance.
- 40:53Speaker 4: To do it again. Yeah, absolutely listen, Rob.
- 40:55Speaker 3: As long as I'm Bucko's duty, you know, there's always
- 40:58Speaker 3: a possibility. Good luck to him tonight and the Pirates
- 41:01Speaker 3: and everybody else.
- 41:01Speaker 4: But yeah, this was fun man.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Hopefully we'll do it again. Max Stark's Rob King. You
- 41:05Speaker 2: can hear them each and every day right here on
- 41:08Speaker 2: SNR in the locker Room special thanks to our producer
- 41:11Speaker 2: keeping things in line for us with Justin Miller back
- 41:15Speaker 2: at the iHeart Studios and Max and Robb will be
- 41:17Speaker 2: back at it tomorrow afternoon right here as we continue
- 41:21Speaker 2: coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp twenty twenty six. For
- 41:24Speaker 2: Max Stark's I'm at Troop in next West, Yuler and
- 41:26Speaker 2: Matt Williamson right here on Steelers Nation Radio and the
