- 0:01Dot com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for September 6th, today's
- 0:13National Read a Book Day, a wonderful celebration that
- 0:16encourages us all to set aside the digital distractions and
- 0:20reconnect with the simple pleasure of turning pages.
- 0:24In our world of endless notifications, streaming videos
- 0:28and social media feeds, this holiday reminds us that
- 0:32sometimes the most enriching screen time is no screen time at
- 0:37all. There's something magical about
- 0:40books that no other medium can quite replicate.
- 0:44They require our full participation.
- 0:47We can't multitask while truly reading.
- 0:50We have to slow down, focus, and let our imagination do the heavy
- 0:53lifting. Books don't just tell us
- 0:56stories, they invite us to Co create them in our minds,
- 1:00painting scenes and voices uniquely our own.
- 1:04Whether it's getting lost in a thrilling mystery, learning
- 1:08something new from a biography, or escaping into a fantasy
- 1:12world, books offer us the gift of transformation without ever
- 1:17leaving our favorite reading spot.
- 1:20Today's quote comes from Doctor Seuss, the beloved children's
- 1:23author who once said the more you read, the more things you
- 1:28will know. The more that you learn, the
- 1:31more places you'll go. Doctor Seuss understood
- 1:35something profound about reading that goes far beyond childhood.
- 1:40Every book is essentially a passport to somewhere new.
- 1:45When we read, we don't just absorb information, we expand
- 1:48our capacity for empathy, imagination, and understanding.
- 1:54Think about it through books. You can have dinner with a
- 1:56Victorian family, explore the surface of Mars, learn how
- 2:01ancient pyramids were built, or understand what it's like to
- 2:05grow up in a completely different culture.
- 2:08You can sit in your living room and travel through time, space,
- 2:13and human experience in ways that would be impossible
- 2:16otherwise. But Doctor Seuss's Wyndham goes
- 2:19deeper than just accumulating facts.
- 2:22The places you'll go aren't just physical or even fictional
- 2:25locations. They're mental and emotional
- 2:28territories. Reading expands our vocabulary,
- 2:32which expands our ability to think complex thoughts.
- 2:35It develops our empathy by showing us life through other
- 2:39perspectives. It strengthens our concentration
- 2:42in a world designed to scatter our attention.
- 2:46I remember being a reluctant reader as a kid.
- 2:49I mean, I read, but I like the comic books and the graphic
- 2:53novels, those types of things. Until the English teacher in my
- 3:00elementary school recommended a book called The White Mountains,
- 3:04which was a book about aliens invading, kind of like Where are
- 3:08the World's or whatever. But it was a good book and it
- 3:12made me realize that there's whole universes in libraries.
- 3:17So I started reading a lot, and now my son and my two daughters,
- 3:25they're reading even more than I did.
- 3:28Reading doesn't just entertain, it shows a version of yourself
- 3:34that you didn't know existed. Because you become the
- 3:37character. You become the person solving
- 3:40mysteries, you become the person defeating the aliens.
- 3:45That's the gift Doctor Seuss was talking about.
- 3:49Books don't just take us places, they show us who we might
- 3:53become. In our fast-paced world, reading
- 3:57can feel almost radical. The act of sitting quietly with
- 4:02our thoughts, following one story from beginning to end,
- 4:06letting our imagination work without visual aids.
- 4:11That's exactly what makes it so valuable.
- 4:14In slowing down to read, we remember how to focus, how to
- 4:18think deeply, how to be present. So today, as we celebrate
- 4:23National Read a Book Day, let's embrace Doctor Seuss's promise
- 4:27about the places reading can take us.
- 4:31Whether you pick up a novel, a biography, poetry, or even a
- 4:35book you've been meaning to read for months, remember that you're
- 4:39not just reading words on a page, you're expanding your
- 4:43world. Find a book today, any book that
- 4:47calls to you, and give yourself the gift of going somewhere new,
- 4:52even if that's somewhere is just a deeper understanding of
- 4:55yourself. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:58I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:04tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:12with another daily quote.
