- 0:00Speaker 1: Before we hear from Texas women's basketball head coach Vick Schaeffer.
- 0:06This news broke late in the show yesterday and we
- 0:09did bring it up on the program, but it's well,
- 0:16I guess you could use the word bizarre in description.
- 0:20Tony Bennett, the Virginia men's basketball coach, announced yesterday his
- 0:26sudden retirement three weeks before the start of the season,
- 0:30and it threw everybody off. He'd been at the ACC
- 0:35tip off media day thing before, so it was quite
- 0:40a stunner for a lot of folks. So we had
- 0:43a news conference this morning and was asked why now
- 0:48and all this, and he described the as he called it,
- 0:52current environment in college sports as one of the driving
- 0:56forces behind his decision to retire. His quote was the
- 1:00hardest thing to say is when I looked at myself
- 1:02and I realized I'm no longer the best coach to
- 1:03lead this program in this current environment. If you're going
- 1:07to do it, you got to be all in. If
- 1:08you do it half hearted, it's not fair to the
- 1:10university and those young men. So in looking at it,
- 1:13that's what made me step down. He's been a guy
- 1:17who for many years has complained about the direction of
- 1:21college athletics and increased emphasis on the transfer portal and nil,
- 1:26he said, I think it's right for student athletes to
- 1:28receive revenue. Please don't mistake me. The game and college
- 1:32athletics is not in a healthy spot. It's not and
- 1:35there needs to be change, and it's not going to
- 1:37go back. I think I was equipped to do the
- 1:39job here the old way. That's who I am. It's
- 1:43going to be closer to a professional model. There's got
- 1:46to be collective bargaining. There has to be a restriction
- 1:48on the salary pool, there has to be transfer regulation restrictions.
- 1:52There has to be some limits on the age and
- 1:54involvement to these young guys. And I worry a lot
- 1:56about the mental health of the student athletes as all
- 1:59of this stuff comes down. So he said he actually
- 2:04originally gave some thought to stepping down when the season
- 2:07ended last year, and the decided not too, but then
- 2:09it changed his mind on all of that. There are
- 2:11some coaches who are better constructed to deal with this.
- 2:19Nick Saban regularly admits he's not one of the better
- 2:22constructed guys to deal with this. Dabo Sweeney is raging
- 2:27against the machine. He's working against transfer portal, so we're
- 2:33seeing its effect throughout the course of college athletics. If
- 2:36you talked to Vick Schaeffer, the Texas women's head coach,
- 2:38he'll tell you that the challenge is certainly there and
- 2:43he understands what it's like. But he credits having a
- 2:49youthful staff around is helping to bridge that gap quite
- 2:53a bit. And he still connects very tightly with his players.
- 2:55He did so again in talking about them at SEC
- 2:58Basketball Media Days this week, and he had Madison Booker,
- 3:01the National Freshman of the Year, with him, and he
- 3:03had Rory Harmon, who had been a preseason All American
- 3:05last year a point guard before having the knee injury.
- 3:08Rory got cleared yesterday, officially got cleared to go full
- 3:12on with everything, and that was good news. But Vick
- 3:16was asked what to this point has he not seen
- 3:20from Madison Booker and what he expects Rory Harmon to
- 3:23bring back to the team.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You know, I think last year I saw a little
- 3:28bit of everything from Madison, you know, as a freshman,
- 3:32as a young player early in her career. Having that,
- 3:36we'll be blanket in Rory Harmon. Who's your point guard
- 3:39running your team. And I said this earlier. I thought,
- 3:44I thought Rory was really really good last year, was
- 3:47on pace to have a first team All American season
- 3:50as well. But I thought she created Madison created a
- 3:54lot of opportunities for Rory, and of course Rory being
- 3:59a point guard, she is opportunities for everybody. And then
- 4:03when Rory went down.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Most of the.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Time, y'all in basketball, when your point guard goes down,
- 4:11your two guard is who you might lean on. We
- 4:15went to our three player in Madison. But I knew
- 4:20after recruiting Madison her entire high school career and knowing
- 4:25my team that I had last year, Madison Booker was
- 4:29the answer.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It wasn't a tryout. That's who was going to be
- 4:33our point guard.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And while we had some bumps in the road along
- 4:38the way early, the kid has so much presence for
- 4:43such a young player. She had tremendous presence on the floor.
- 4:50She nothing rattled her her first three or four minutes
- 4:54in that very first game against Baylor, when we only
- 4:56had three days to get ready, that was the worst.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Of the worst.
- 5:01Speaker 2: After that, I took her out, and then when we
- 5:04put her back in, I never saw that again, she
- 5:08was just she was really ready to embrace the role
- 5:12that she was in and so you have to give
- 5:14the kid a ton of credit what she was able
- 5:18to do leading that team. That team won thirty three games.
- 5:23In the history of Texas women's basketball, they've only won
- 5:26more games one time, and that's when they won the
- 5:28national championship in nineteen eighty six and they were thirty
- 5:32four to oh But that team would not have been
- 5:35that if it hadn't have been for Madison Booker embracing
- 5:39being the point guard. So now you fast forward to
- 5:42where we are now, Madison Booker. There's nobody more excited
- 5:45on our team that Rory Harmon's back than Madison Booker
- 5:47because she wants to go over there and get on
- 5:49the wing where she's really comfortable, and I just think
- 5:54that it allows us as a team. We've got a
- 5:57lot of flexibility there. And we have a special freshman
- 6:01in Brionna Preston who's going to be an unbelievable point
- 6:05guard for us.
- 6:06Speaker 3: But Rory just.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Rory's presence, how hard she plays, the energy that she
- 6:15plays with permeates through my team every day, every game,
- 6:22and I think she really is a settling influence on
- 6:27my entire team, and it gives my team a lot
- 6:29of confidence. And I ain't know this, it gives her
- 6:32head coach a lot of confidence to know that we
- 6:34have her back on the floor leading our team. And
- 6:39so it's a really good feeling to know we've got
- 6:43great guard play. You win with guard play in basketball.
- 6:48You have notes. You can have all the size you
- 6:49want in the world, but if you don't have guard play,
- 6:51you got no chance. We've got guard play this year,
- 6:55and I've got depth at guard play with Brie and
- 7:00in Jordan Lee to exceptional freshmen. Leilophilia y'all is a monster.
- 7:07She's gonna be so good. Shay Holly has been the
- 7:11glue to my program for the last few years. So
- 7:16I just named off five six guards that they're all
- 7:20gonna play every night, and they're gonna play a lot,
- 7:23and they're all gonna impact our team.
- 7:25Speaker 3: And so.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I think our team, our future is in really good
- 7:31shape at the guard spot. And this year's team, we
- 7:35finally have some depth. I just haven't had it the
- 7:37last couple of years. And give those teams credit, they've
- 7:40learned how to stat a foul trouble and play play
- 7:43through some issues. But this year's team, we finally have depth.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Those would be obviously the most celebrated returning players to Texas.
- 7:53There are new faces on this team, among those Michigan
- 7:56Trends Forer guard Leilophelia, and Vic was asked what he
- 8:01believes Leyla can bring.
- 8:02Speaker 3: To this team.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Well, Layla. Layla's is really She's perfect for how we
- 8:13want to play, how I like to play. She's a
- 8:16great teammate, she's a great kid. She's tough and competitive.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I would have loved to have had her for four years.
- 8:27You know, I'm blessed to get her for one year.
- 8:29But she just brings so much to the table. She's
- 8:32she's she's really an aggressive offensive player. She cares defensively.
- 8:39She's trying to learn a new system, you know, get
- 8:42a crash course in that. She's had some injuries this
- 8:46summer which have kind of slowed her, but she's finally
- 8:49healthy and has really looked and this last week she's
- 8:52looked really good, like a million dollars and she really
- 8:56looks good. And I've even played her at some points
- 9:00because she is really good reading reading Boss Green defense.
- 9:05So she brings a lot to the table. And you
- 9:08know she's she can scored all three levels. She's smart,
- 9:12she's heady, sees the floor extremely well. She's going to
- 9:16be a great compliment to my other guards. But she
- 9:19and along with Shay, that's two veterans, two seniors. You know,
- 9:24we lose Shaley Gonzalez and those two I can plug in.
- 9:27One of them is going to start, and one of
- 9:30them is gonna be six, have a chance to be
- 9:32six Player of the Year because they're that good. And
- 9:36that's a great, great it's not a problem. I hate
- 9:41to say that, you know, it's not a problem. It's
- 9:43a great thing to have. And so again excited about
- 9:46the opportunity to coach her. And again she's a great
- 9:49kid man. She's just really, really a perfect fit for us.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Vick was asked then a couple of questions about other coaches,
- 9:56coaches that he knew coaches have been former assistants or
- 9:59players under him. One of those is, you'll let me
- 10:02fee mckun who has been turning around the old miss program,
- 10:05and he was asked for his thoughts on mckewn.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Well, I think you said it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I mean where they are today and where they were
- 10:11then it's way different, you know. And I haven't been
- 10:13in the league since then, and I've had my own
- 10:16problems and concerns and my own league that I was
- 10:20in the kind of and I haven't paid that much attention.
- 10:23So I know that she was very successful where she
- 10:26was before she went to Mississippi, and uh, so I
- 10:31does it surprise me. No, she was very successful where
- 10:34she was, and I think that obviously, when you finish
- 10:38in the top four or three years in a row
- 10:40in this league, you're doing something and h and so again,
- 10:45the bottom line is it all comes down to recruiting,
- 10:48you know, for all of us, And uh, I think
- 10:50she's done.
- 10:51Speaker 3: A great job.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And again, we all recruit to a fit, and I
- 10:55think she's done a great job.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:57Speaker 2: The secret to our success has been recruiting a fit,
- 11:00retaining our student athletes, and developing them. And over the
- 11:05course of time, we've been pretty successful in all three
- 11:07of those phases. So for her, it doesn't surprise me
- 11:11at all, and certainly happy for her. I know, I
- 11:15know that blood feud in that conference in that state,
- 11:18and I know how that is, and you know, I
- 11:22lived it for eight years, and there's no middle ground,
- 11:27and I know the competition and the competitive spirit that
- 11:31she has as well as Sam Now we had when
- 11:35I was there.
- 11:37Speaker 3: It's really special. So I'm really happy for her and
- 11:40her staff.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And again that's what happens when you work hard and
- 11:44you have a plan.
- 11:46Speaker 1: He also is not surprised at all and seeing what
- 11:49Johnny Harris, his former assistant who was with him actually
- 11:51one year in Austin, is starting to do with the
- 11:54Auburn program to turn in around.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it's no surprise.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I mean, she was with me, you know, all eight
- 12:00years in Mississippi State, and you know she's lived it.
- 12:05She's seen it every day and she was a big
- 12:08part of the big reason why we were able to
- 12:10do it. We did, so, you know, when I was
- 12:13recommending her for that job, there was no question in
- 12:17my mind she was ready and she could do it.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And she knows what the recipe is.
- 12:23Speaker 2: When you start interviewing with people and talking to people
- 12:26and you've got to take over, there's nothing harder.
- 12:29Speaker 3: And y'all in this room, you either you should know it.
- 12:32Speaker 2: If you don't, I don't care what sport it is
- 12:35in the Southeastern Conference.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You want to take a dawning task.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Go take over one of the bottom teams in this
- 12:42league and whatever sports you're going to take over and
- 12:45try to build it and pass people up.
- 12:48Speaker 3: It's almost impossible. It's so daunting.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And so again, she was a big part of what
- 12:56we did.
- 12:56Speaker 3: At Mississippi State, and it doesn't surprise me that she's
- 13:00able to do it at Auburn. And I knew she could.
- 13:03I knew she would, and she.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Knows what the recipe is, and I'm certainly happy for her.
- 13:09And so it's we were together a long time. We
- 13:15had a lot of we had a lot of good
- 13:16times together. Not enough time of the day for me
- 13:19to share them, but we had a lot of good
- 13:20times together.
- 13:21Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:22Speaker 1: There it is some more from Vick Schaeffer there coming
- 13:24up next, we bring you today He's edition of Inconceivable
- 13:27of Friday edition on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 13:30zone of the iHeartRadio app.
