- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning. Welcome to another week. And each weekday morning
- 0:09Speaker 1: at this time, we open the Bible and see what
- 0:11Speaker 1: God has to say to us, and we find day
- 0:14Speaker 1: after day that God speaks right into our personal lives.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It's amazing how what God brings us so often is
- 0:23Speaker 1: exactly the things that we're facing.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And this week I want to focus with you all
- 0:29Speaker 1: week on the theme of fear. Now all of us
- 0:32Speaker 1: know people who, uh, fear seems to be a distant
- 0:37Speaker 1: reality in their lives. They always just seem to be relaxed,
- 0:42Speaker 1: nothing fazes them.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They just kind of cruise through life uh in that
- 0:46Speaker 1: relaxed state. And there are other people we know who
- 0:50Speaker 1: fear is the defining factor of their lives. Everything that happens,
- 0:56Speaker 1: they are fearful of. And then uh there are many
- 1:00Speaker 1: of us who fit somewhere in the spectrum between those
- 1:05Speaker 1: two kinds of people.
- 1:06Speaker 1: But the reality is, fear can have a massive impact
- 1:11Speaker 1: on your life, even a massive impact on your health,
- 1:15Speaker 1: if you allow fear to overcome you. I don't know
- 1:19Speaker 1: what you're facing this week or even today.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Something that is bringing fear into your heart and mind.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I want to read a passage from the Old Testament
- 1:29Speaker 1: today and spend some time in it this week. Here, uh,
- 1:33Speaker 1: in the book of Exodus, when the people of Israel
- 1:36Speaker 1: who've been slaves in Egypt for 400 years, and God
- 1:40Speaker 1: has just brought Moses and set them free, they're on
- 1:44Speaker 1: their way out of Egypt, and Pharaoh says, we're not
- 1:47Speaker 1: letting them go, and he gets his whole army and
- 1:49Speaker 1: starts chasing them down.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Here's what it says starting in verse 9. The Egyptians
- 1:56Speaker 1: pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen
- 2:01Speaker 1: and his army, and overtook them, encamped at the sea
- 2:05Speaker 1: by Pihahiroth in front of Baal Zephon.
- 2:09Speaker 1: When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up
- 2:12Speaker 1: their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And listen, they feared greatly, well, as you would.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.
- 2:26Speaker 1: They said to Moses, Is it because there are no
- 2:28Speaker 1: graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to
- 2:31Speaker 1: die in the wilderness? What have you done to us
- 2:33Speaker 1: in bringing us out of Egypt? Is not this what
- 2:36Speaker 1: we said to you in Egypt? Leave us alone that
- 2:39Speaker 1: we may serve the Egyptians, for it would have been
- 2:42Speaker 1: better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die
- 2:45Speaker 1: in the wilderness.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And Moses said to the people, Fear not, fear not,
- 2:53Speaker 1: sand firm and see the salvation of the Lord, which
- 2:58Speaker 1: He will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom
- 3:02Speaker 1: you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord
- 3:06Speaker 1: will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Well, what is fear in our lives?
- 3:14Speaker 1: Fear is the terrified anticipation of calamity, right?
- 3:22Speaker 1: The terrified anticipation of calamity.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Uh, I'm really into mountain biking, and I'm doing more
- 3:28Speaker 1: and more aggressive stuff in my mountain biking, and I'll
- 3:31Speaker 1: tell you, when I'm on a, a serious mountain biking
- 3:33Speaker 1: trail and I come to a big feature, a jump
- 3:36Speaker 1: I have to clear with high consequences if I don't
- 3:39Speaker 1: make the landing right, I come up to that feature,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I have a terrified anticipation of calamity.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And it makes everything in me grab the brakes and
- 3:50Speaker 1: stop and not power through uh that jump or whatever
- 3:54Speaker 1: feature it is. We also feel it sometimes about obeying God.
- 3:59Speaker 1: We feel like God is calling us to something and
- 4:02Speaker 1: instantly we have this terrified anticipation of calamity. What might
- 4:07Speaker 1: happen if I obey God in this area of my life.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And we fear about what will happen.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Because we view the possibilities of today and tomorrow, listen,
- 4:21Speaker 1: as if God were not on our side.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We fear what will happen because we view the possibilities
- 4:30Speaker 1: of today and tomorrow as if God were not on
- 4:33Speaker 1: our side, and I just want to challenge you today
- 4:36Speaker 1: as we launch into this topic for the week. Remember
- 4:40Speaker 1: God is on your side, and stop and look at
- 4:43Speaker 1: your fears today and about this week, and remember your
- 4:48Speaker 1: only fear because you're looking as if God were not
- 4:51Speaker 1: on your side. I'm John North.
