Chapter nineteen. The contents of this chapter we have Tewo Peter two Verses six
0:07
to eight, where we find that God, turning the cities of Sodom and
0:12
Gomarra into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, and delivered just Lot.
0:19
It is the history of Sodom's ruin and Lot's rescue from that ruin. We
0:24
read Chapter eighteen of God's Coming to take a view of the present state of
0:30
Sodom, what its wickedness was, and what righteous persons there were in it.
0:37
Now Here we have the result of that inquiry. Numeral one. It
0:43
was found upon trial that Lot was very good Verses one to three, and
0:48
it did not appear that there was any more of the same character. Numeral
0:54
two. It was found that the Sodomites were very wicked and vile versus four
1:00
eleven. Numeral three. Special care was therefore taken for the securing of Lot
1:07
and his family in a place of safety Verses twelve to twenty three. Numeral
1:12
four. Mercy having rejoiced therein, justice shows itself in the ruin of Sodom
1:19
and the death of Lot's wife Verses twenty four to twenty six, with a
1:25
general repetition of the story Verses twenty seven to twenty nine, Numeral five of
1:33
foul sin that Lot was guilty of in committing incest with his two daughters,
1:38
Verse thirty et cetera. Assault on the house of Lot b c. One
1:46
thousand, eight hundred ninety eight. And there came two angels to Sodom at
1:52
even, and Lots sat in the gate of Sodom. And Lots, seeing
1:56
them, rose up to meet them. And he bowed himself with his face
2:00
toward the ground, and he said, behold, now, my lords,
2:05
turn in. I pray you into your servant's house, and tarry all night,
2:10
and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early and go on
2:14
your ways. And they said, nay, but we will abide in the
2:17
street all night. And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in
2:23
unto him and entered into his house. And he made them a feast,
2:28
and did bake unliving bread, and they did eat these angels. It is
2:34
likely where two of the three that had just before been with Abraham, the
2:39
two created angels that were sent to execute God's purpose concerning Sodom observe here Number
2:47
one. There was but one good man in Sodom, and these heavenly messengers
2:53
soon found him out. Wherever we are, we should inquire out those of
2:58
the place that live in the fear of God, and should choose to associate
3:04
ourselves with them. Matthew ten, verse eleven. Inquire who is worthy,
3:09
and there abide those of the same country, when they are in a foreign
3:15
country, love to be together. Number two. Lots sufficiently distinguished himself from
3:23
the rest of his neighbors at this time, which plainly set a mark upon
3:28
him. He that did not act like the rest, must not fare like
3:32
the rest. Subscript one. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom at even
3:39
when the rest, it is likely, where tippling and drinking, he said
3:44
alone, waiting for an opportunity to do good. Subscript two. He was
3:50
extremely respectful to men whose mean and aspect were sober and serious, though they
3:55
did not come in state. He bowed himself to the ground when he met
4:00
them, as if upon the first view he discerned something divine in them.
4:05
Subscript three. He was hospitable and very free and generous in his invitations and
4:13
entertainments. He courted these strangers to his house and to the best accommodations he
4:18
had, and gave them all the evidences that he could of his sincerity.
4:24
Four some point one, when the angels, to try whether he was hardy
4:29
in the invitation, declined the acceptance of it at first, which is the
4:33
common usage of modesty, and no reproach at all to truth and honesty.
4:39
Their refusal did not make him more importanate, for he pressed upon them greatly
4:45
verse three, partly because he would, by no means have them to expose
4:49
themselves to the inconveniences and perils of lodging in the street of Sodom, and
4:56
partly because he was desirous of their company. And converse, he had not
5:01
seen two such honest faces in Sodom this great while. Note those that live
5:08
in bad places should know how to value the society of those that are wise
5:14
and good and earnestly desired. Some point two. When the angels accepted his
5:19
invitation, he treated them nobly. He made a feast for them, and
5:25
thought it well bestowed on such guests. Note good people should be with prudence,
5:31
generous people. But before they lay down the men of the city,
5:36
even the men of Sodom, come passed the house round, both old and
5:41
young, all the people from every quarter, and they called unto Lot,
5:46
and said, unto him, where are the men which came in to thee
5:48
this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
5:53
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after
5:57
him, and said, I pray you do not so wickedly. Behold,
6:01
now I have two daughters which have not known man. Let me I pray
6:05
you bring them out unto you, and do you to them as is good
6:10
in your eyes. Only unto these men do nothing. For therefore came they
6:15
under the shadow of my roof, and they said, stand back. And
6:19
they said again this one fellow came in as adjourn, and he will needs
6:25
be a judge. Now we we deal worse with thee than with them.
6:29
And they pressed sore upon the man even Lot, and came near to break
6:32
the door. But the men put forth their hand and pulled Lot into the
6:36
house to them, and shut to the door. And they smold the men
6:42
that were at the door of the house with blindness both small and great,
6:46
so that they wearied themselves to find the door. Now it appeared beyond contradiction
6:53
that the cry of Sodom was no louder than there was cause. For this
6:58
night's work was enough to fill the measure. For we find here numeral one,
7:03
that they were all wicked verse four. Wickedness had become universal, and
7:09
they were unanimous in any vile design. Here were old and young, and
7:15
all from every quarter engaged in this riot. The old were not past it,
7:19
and the young had soon come up to it. Either they had no
7:24
magistrates to keep the peace and protect the peaceable, or their magistrates were themselves
7:30
aiding and abetting. Note. When the disease of sin has become epidemically,
7:36
it is fatal to any place. Isaiah one, verses five to seven,
7:43
Numeral two. That they had arrived at the highest pitch of wickedness. They
7:48
were sinners before the Lord exceedingly. Chapter thirteen, Verse thirteen four, Number
7:55
one. It was the most unnatural and abominable wickedness that they were now set
8:01
upon, a sin that still bears their name and is called sodomy. They
8:07
were carried hitlong by those vile affections Romans Chapter one, Verses twenty six and
8:13
twenty seven, which are worse than brutish and the eternal reproach of the human
8:18
nature, and which cannot be thought of without horror by those that have the
8:22
least spark of virtue in any remains of natural light and conscience. Note those
8:30
that allow themselves in unnatural uncleanness are marked for the vengeance of eternal fire see
8:37
Jude seven, number two. They were not ashamed to own it and to
8:45
prosecute their design by force and arms. The practice would have been bad enough
8:50
if it had been carried on by intrigue and wheedling. But they proclaim war
8:54
with virtue and bade open defiance to it. Hence, daring sin are set
9:00
to declare their sin as sodom Isaiah three, verse nine. Note those that
9:07
have become impudent in sin generally prove impenitent in sin, and it will be
9:13
their ruin. Those have hard hearts indeed that sin with a high hand.
9:20
Jeremiah six, verse fifteen, number three. When Lot interposed with all the
9:28
mildness imaginable to check the rage and fury of their lust, they were most
9:33
insolently rude and abusive to him. He ventured himself among them verse six.
9:39
He spoke civilly to them, called them brethren verse seven, and begged of
9:45
them not to do so. Wickedly, and being greatly disturbed at their vile
9:50
attempt, he unadvisedly and unjustifiably offered to prostitute his two daughters to them.
9:56
Verse eight. It is true, of two evils, we must choose the
10:01
less, but of two sins, we must choose neither, nor ever do
10:05
evil, that good may come of it. He reasoned with them, pleaded
10:11
the laws of hospitality and the protection of his house, which his guests were
10:16
entitled to. But he might as well have offered reason to a roaring line
10:20
and a raging bear, as to these headstrong sinners, who were governed only
10:26
by lust and passion lots. Arguing with them does but exasperate them, and
10:33
to complete their wickedness and fill up the measure of it, they fall foul
10:37
upon him. Subscript one. They ridicule him, charge him with the absurdity
10:43
of pretending to be a magistrate, when he was not so much as a
10:48
free man of their city. Verse nine. Note it is common for a
10:52
reprover to be unjustly upbraided as a usurper, and while offering the kindness of
10:58
a friend, to be charged with assuming the authority of a judge, as
11:01
if a man might not speak reason without taking too much upon him. Subscript
11:07
two. They threaten him and lay violent hands upon him, and the good
11:13
man is in danger of being pulled in pieces by this outrageous rabble. Note
11:18
sub point one. Those that hate to be reformed hate those that reprove them.
11:24
Though with ever so much tenderness, presumptuous sinners do by their consciences,
11:30
as the Sodomites did by lot, baffle their checks, stifle their accusations,
11:35
press hard upon them till they have seared them, and quite stopped their mouths
11:41
and soul made themselves ripe for Ruin sub point two. Abuses offered to God's
11:46
messengers and to faithful reprovers soon fill the measure of a people's wickedness and bring
11:52
destruction without remedy see Proverbs twenty nine, verse one and Second Chronicles thirty six,
12:00
verse sixteen. If reproofs remedy not, there is no remedy see Second
12:07
Chronicles twenty five, verse sixteen, numeral three. That nothing less than the
12:13
power of an angel could save a good man out of their wicked hands.
12:18
It was now past dispute what Sodom's character was and what course must be taken.
12:24
With it, and therefore the angels immediately gave a specimen of what they
12:28
further intended. Number One, they rescue Lot verse ten. Note he that
12:35
watereth shall be watered also himself. Lot was solicitous to protect them, and
12:41
now they take effectual care for his safety in return for his kindness. Note
12:46
further, angels are employed for the special preservation of those that expose themselves to
12:52
danger by well doing. The saints at death are pulled like Lot into a
12:58
house of perfect safety, and the doors shut forever against those that pursue them.
13:05
Number two, they chastised the insolence of the Sodomites. They smote them
13:11
with blindness verse eleven. This was designed subscript one, to put an end
13:18
to their attempt and disable them from pursuing it. Justly, where those struck
13:22
blind who had been deaf to reason, violent persecutors are often infatuated so that
13:30
they cannot push on their malicious designs against God's messengers Job five, Verses fourteen
13:37
and fifteen. Yet these Sodomites, after they were struck blind, continued seeking
13:41
the door to break it down till they were tired. No judgments will of
13:46
themselves change the corrupt natures and purposes of wicked men. If their minds had
13:52
not been blinded as well as their bodies, they would have said, as
13:56
the magicians, this is the finger of God, and would have submitted subscript
14:01
too. It was to be in earnest of their utter ruin the next day,
14:05
when God, in a way of righteous judgment, blinds men their condition
14:09
as already desperate. Romans eleven, verses eight and nine. Rescue of Lot
14:18
out of Sodom be see one thousand, eight hundred and ninety eight. And
14:22
the men said, unto Lot, hast thou here any besides son in law,
14:28
and thy sons and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city.
14:33
Bring them out of this place, for we will destroy this place,
14:35
because the cry of them is wax great before the face of the Lord,
14:41
and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it. And Lot went out and
14:45
spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said,
14:50
up, get you out of this place, for the Lord will destroy this
14:52
city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.
14:58
We have heard the pro operation for a Lot's deliverance. Numeral I notice is
15:05
given him of the approach of Sodom's ruin, we will destroy this place verse
15:11
thirteen. Note the holy angels are ministers of God's wrath for the destruction of
15:18
sinners, as well as of his mercy for the preservation and deliverance of his
15:22
people. In this sense, the good angels become evil angels Psalm seventy eight,
15:28
verse forty nine, Numeral two. He is directed to give notice to
15:35
his friends and relations that they, if they would, might be saved with
15:39
him. Verse twelve. Hast thou here any besides that thou art concerned,
15:45
for if thou hast go, tell them what is coming now? This implies
15:50
number one the command of a great duty, which was to do all he
15:56
could for the salvation of those about him, to snatch them as brands out
16:00
of the fire. Note those who through grace are themselves delivered out of a
16:07
sinful state, should do what they can for the deliverance of others, especially
16:14
their relations. Number two, the offer of great favor. They do not
16:21
ask whether he knew any righteous ones in the city fit to be spared.
16:26
No, they knew there were none. But they ask what relations he had
16:32
there, that, whether righteous or unrighteous, they might be saved with him.
16:37
Note that people often fare the better in this world for the sake of
16:41
their good relations. It is good being akin to a godly man Numeral three.
16:49
He applies himself accordingly to his sons in law. Verse fourteen. Observe
16:55
number one the fair warning that lot gave them up. Get you out of
17:00
this place. The manner of expression is startling and quickening. It was no
17:06
time to trifle when the destruction was just at the door. They had not
17:11
forty days to repent in as the Ninavites had now, or never, they
17:15
must make their escape at midnight. This cry was made, such as,
17:22
this is our call to the unconverted to turn and live. Number two.
17:30
The slight they put upon this warning, He seemed to them as one that
17:36
mocked. They thought, perhaps that the assault which the Sodomites had just now
17:41
made upon his house had disturbed his head and put him into such a fright
17:47
that he knew not what he said, or they thought that he was not
17:52
in earnest with them. Those who lived a merry life and made a jest
17:56
of everything made a jest of this warning, and so they perished in the
18:00
overthrow. Thus many who were warned of the misery and danger they are in
18:07
by sin, make a light matter of it, and think their ministers do
18:11
but jest with him. Such will perish with their blood upon their own heads.
18:18
And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying,
18:22
arise, take thy wife and their two daughters, which are here, lest
18:26
thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered,
18:30
the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife,
18:34
and upon the hand of his two daughters. The Lord being merciful unto
18:38
him, and they brought him forth and set him without the city. And
18:42
it came to pass when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said,
18:48
escape for thy life. Look not behind thee neither stay thou in all
18:52
the plain. Escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. And Lot
18:56
said unto them, Oh not so much, my lord. Behold, now
19:00
thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy,
19:06
which thou hast shewt unto me, and saving my life. And I
19:10
cannot escape to the mountain lest some evil take me and I die. Behold
19:15
Now this city is near to flee unto and it is a little one.
19:19
Oh, let me escape thither? Is it not a little one? And
19:23
my soul shall live? And he said unto him, see, I have
19:27
accepted THEE concerning this thing, also that I will not overthrow this city for
19:33
the which thou hast spoken. Haste thee escape thither, for I cannot do
19:37
anything till thou become thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
19:44
The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Here
19:49
is numeral one the rescue of Lot out of Sodom. Though there were not
19:55
ten righteous men of Sodom, for whose sakes it might be spared, yet
20:00
that one righteous man that was among them, delivered his own soul Ezekiel fourteen
20:04
verse fourteen. Early in the morning, his own guests, in kindness to
20:11
him, turned him out of doors, and his family with him Verse fifteen.
20:15
His daughters that were married perished with their unbelieving husbands, but those that
20:21
continued with him were preserved with him. Observed Number one. With what a
20:26
gracious violence Lot was brought out of Sodom verse sixteen. It seems though he
20:33
did not make a jest of the warning given, as his sons in law
20:37
did. Yet he lingered, he trifled, he did not make so much
20:41
haste as the case required. Thus, many that are under some convictions about
20:47
the misery of their spiritual state and the necessity of a change, yet defer
20:52
that needful work, and foolishly linger lot did so. And it might have
20:59
been fair to him if the angels had not laid hold of his hand and
21:03
brought him forth and saved him with fear June twenty three. Herein it is
21:10
said the Lord was merciful to him, Otherwise he might justly have left him
21:15
to perish, since he was so loth to depart. Note Subscript one.
21:22
The salvation of the most righteous men must be attributed to God's mercy, not
21:26
to their own merit. We are saved by a grace. Subscript two.
21:32
God's power also must be acknowledged in the bringing of souls out of a sinful
21:37
state. If God had not brought us forth, we had never come forth.
21:42
Subscript three. If God had not been merciful to us, our lingering
21:48
had been our Ruin number two, with what a gracious vehemence he was urged
21:55
to make the best of his way when he was brought forth seventeen. Subscript
22:02
one, he must still apprehend himself in danger of being consumed, and be
22:07
quickened by the law of self preservation to flee for his life. Note a
22:12
holy fear and trembling are found necessary to the working out of our salvation.
22:18
Subscript two. He must therefore mind his business with the utmost care and diligence.
22:26
He must not hanker after sodom, Look not behind thee. He must
22:30
not loiter by the way, stay not in the plain, for it would
22:33
all be made one dead sea. He must not take up short of the
22:40
place of refuge appointed him, escape to the mountain. Such as these are
22:45
the commands given to those who, through grace, are delivered out of a
22:48
sinful state. Sub Point one. Return not to sin and Satan, for
22:55
that is looking back to sodom. Sub Point two. Rest not in self
23:00
on the world, for that is staying in the plain. And su point
23:04
three reached towards Christ and Heaven, for that is escaping to the mountain,
23:11
short of which we must not take up Numeral two. The fixing of a
23:17
place of refuge for him. The mountain was first appointed for him to flee
23:22
to. But Number one he begged for a city of refuge, one of
23:26
the five that lay together called bee Law Chapter fourteen, verse two and Chapter
23:33
nineteen, Verses eighteen to twenty. It was Lot's weakness to think a city
23:40
of his own, choosing safer than the mountain of God's appointing. And he
23:45
argued against himself when he pleaded, thou hast magnified thy mercy in saving my
23:49
life, And I cannot escape to the mountain. For could not he that
23:53
plucked him out of sodom when he lingered carry him safely to the mountain,
23:59
though he began to tie. Could not he that saved him from greater evils
24:03
save him from the less? He insists much in his petition upon the smallness
24:08
of the place. It is a little one, it is not. Therefore
24:12
it was to be hoped not so bad as the rest. This gave a
24:17
new name to the place. It was called, So are a little one
24:22
intercessions, for little ones are worthy to be remembered. Number two. God
24:27
granted him his request, though there was much infirmity in it Verses twenty one
24:33
and twenty two. See what favor God showed to a true saint, though
24:37
weak. Subscript one, Zore was spared to gratify him, though his intercession
24:45
for it was not as Abraham's for Sodom from a principle of generous charity,
24:51
but merely from self interest. Yet God granted him his request to show how
24:56
much the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails. Subscript two. Sodom's ruin
25:02
was suspended till he was saved. I cannot do anything till thou shalt have
25:07
come thither. Note the very presence of good men in the place helps to
25:11
keep off judgments. See what care God takes for the preservation of his people.
25:17
The winds are held till God's servants are sealed. Revelation seven, verse
25:22
three, Ezekiel nine, verse four, numeral three. It has taken notice
25:30
of that the sun had risen when Lot entered into Zor. For when a
25:33
good man comes into a place, he brings light along with him. Or
25:37
should do destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah b. C. One thousand, eight
25:44
hundred ninety eight. Then the Lord reigned upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah. Brimstone
25:49
and fire from the Lord out of heaven, and he overthrew those cities,
25:55
and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that
25:59
which which grew upon the ground. Then when Lot had got safely into Zor,
26:06
then this ruin came. For good men are taken away from the evil
26:11
to come. Then, when the sun had risen bright and clear, promising
26:17
a fair day, then this storm arose. To show that it was not
26:22
from natural causes. Concerning this destruction, observed number one, God was the
26:29
immediate author of it. It was destruction from the Almighty. The Lord reigned
26:36
from the Lord verse twenty four. That is, God from himself by his
26:41
own immediate power, and not in the common course of nature, or God
26:48
the Son from God the Father. For the Father has committed all judgment to
26:53
the Son. Note he that is the Savior, will be the destroyer of
26:59
these that reject the salvation. Number two, it was a strange punishment job
27:06
thirty one verse three. Never was the like before, nor since Hell was
27:11
rained from Heaven upon them. Fire and brimstone and a horrible tempest were the
27:18
portion of their cup saw eleven verse six. Not a flash of lightning,
27:23
which is destructive enough when God gives it commission but a shower of lightning brimstone
27:30
was scattered upon their habitation Job eighteen, verse fifteen, and then the fire
27:36
soon fastened upon them. God could have drowned them as he did the old
27:41
world, but he would show that he has many errors in his quiver fire
27:45
as well as water. Number three. It was a judgment that laid all
27:52
waste. It overthrew the cities and destroyed all the inhabitants of them, the
27:59
plain and all that grew upon the ground verse twenty five. It was an
28:03
utter ruin and irreparable. That fruitful valley remains to this day a great lake
28:11
or dead sea. It is called the salt sea. Numbers thirty four,
28:15
verse twelve. Travelers say that it is about thirty miles long and ten miles
28:22
broad. It has no living creature in it. It is not moved by
28:26
the wind. The smell of it is offensive. Things do not easily sink
28:30
in it. The Greeks call it asphaltitis, from a sort of pitch which
28:36
it casts up. Jordan falls into it and is lost there. Number four.
28:41
It was a punishment that answered to their sin. Burning lusts against nature
28:47
were justly punished with this preternatural burning those that went after strange flesh were destroyed
28:53
by strange fire Jude seven. They persecuted the angels with their rabble and made
29:00
a lot afraid. And now God persecuted them with his tempest and made them
29:04
afraid with his storm. Saw eighty three, verse fifteen, number five.
29:10
It was designed for a standing revelation of the wrath of God against sin and
29:15
sinners in all ages. It is accordingly often referred to in the scripture,
29:22
and made a pattern of the ruin of Israel Deuteronomy twenty nine, verse twenty
29:26
three, of Babylon, Isaiah thirteen, verse nineteen, of Edom, Jeremiah
29:33
forty nine, verses seventeen and eighteen of Moab, and Ammon Zephaniah two,
29:41
verse nine Nay. It was typical of the vengeance of eternal fire Jude seven,
29:47
and the ruin of all that live ungodly Tewo Peter two, verse six,
29:52
especially that despised the Gospel Matthew ten, verse fifteen. It is in
29:57
allusion to this destruction that the place of the damned is often represented by a
30:03
lake that burns, as Sodom did with fire and brimstone. Let us learn
30:07
from it. Subscript one the evil of sin and the hurtful nature of it.
30:14
Iniquity tends to ruin subscript two, the terrors of the Lord. See
30:19
what a fearful thing it is to fall into the hands of the living God.
30:26
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar
30:30
of salt. This also is written for our admonition. Our savior refers to
30:37
it. Lukes seventeen, verse thirty two. Remember Lot's wife, as by
30:42
the example of Sodom, the wicked or warned to turn from their wickedness.
30:48
So by the example of Lot's wife, the rights are warned not to turn
30:52
from their righteousness. See Ezekiel three, verses eighteen and twenty. We have
30:57
here numerals one the sin of Lot's wife. She looked back from behind him.
31:04
This seemed a small thing, but we are sure by the punishment of
31:08
it that it was a great sin and exceedingly sinful. Number one, she
31:14
disobeyed an express command and so sinned. After the similitude of Adam's transgression,
31:19
which ruined us all Number two, unbelief was at the bottom of it.
31:25
She questioned whether Sodom would be destroyed, and thought she might still have been
31:30
safe in it. Number three, she looked back upon her neighbors, whom
31:33
she had left behind with more concern than was fit, now that their day
31:37
of grace was over and divine justice was glorifying itself in their ruin see Isaiah
31:44
sixty six, verse twenty four, number four. Probably she hankered after her
31:49
house and goods and sodom, and was loth to leave them. Christ intimates
31:56
this to be her sin. Luke seventeen, verses thirty one thirty two.
32:00
She too much regarded her stuff number five. Her looking back evidenced an inclination
32:07
to go back, and therefore our Savior uses it as a warning against apostasy
32:14
from our Christian profession. We have all renounced the world and the flesh,
32:19
and have set our faces heavenward. We are in the plane upon our probation,
32:24
and it is at our peril if we return into the interests we profess
32:30
to have abandoned. Drawing back is to perdition, and looking back is towards
32:35
it. Let us therefore fear he was four verse one, numeral two the
32:42
punishment of Lot's wife for the sin. She was struck dead in the place,
32:46
yet her body did not fall down, but stood fixed and erect,
32:52
like a pillar or monument, not liable to waste nor decay, as human
32:57
bodies exposed to the air are, but but metamorphosed into a metallic substance which
33:02
would last perpetually come. Behold the goodness and severity of God. Romans eleven,
33:09
verse twenty two, towards Lot, who went forward goodness, toward his
33:15
wife, who looked back severity, though she was nearly related to a righteous
33:21
man, though better than her neighbors, and though a monument of distinguishing mercy
33:28
in her deliverance out of Sodom. Yet God did not connive at her disobedience.
33:34
For great privileges will not secure us from the wrath of God if we
33:38
do not carefully and faithfully improve them. This pillar of salt should season us.
33:45
Since it is such a dangerous thing to look back, let us always
33:50
press forward. Philippians three, verses thirteen and fourteen. And Abraham get up
33:57
early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord. And
34:01
he looked towards Sodom and Gomarrah, and toward all the land of the plain,
34:06
and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the country went up,
34:10
as the smoke of a furnace. And it came to pass when God destroyed
34:15
the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of
34:21
the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in the which Lot
34:25
dwelt. Our communion with God consists in our gracious regard to Him and His
34:32
gracious regard to us. We have here therefore the communion that was between God
34:38
and Abraham in the event concerning Sodom, as before in the consultation concerning it.
34:45
For communion with God is to be kept up in providences as well as
34:51
in ordinances Numeral one. Here is Abraham's pious regard to God in this event
34:57
in two things number one, A careful expectation of the event, Verse twenty
35:02
seven. He got up early to look toward Sodom, and to intimate that
35:08
his design hearing was to see what became of his prayers. He went to
35:13
the very place where he had stood before the Lord, and set himself there
35:17
as upon his watch tower. A bac of two. Verse one. Note,
35:22
when we have prayed, we must look after our prayers and observe the
35:28
success of them. We must direct our prayer as a letter and then look
35:32
up for an answer. Direct our prayer as an arrow, and then look
35:37
up to see whether it reached the mark Psalm five, verse three. Our
35:43
inquiries after news must be in expectation of an answer to our prayers. Number
35:51
two an awful observation of it. He looked towards Sodom verse twenty eight,
35:57
not as Lot's wife did, dacidly reflecting upon the divine severity, but humbly
36:02
adoring it and acquiescing in it. Thus the saints, when they see the
36:08
smoke of Babylon's torment rising up forever like Sodom's here, will say again and
36:15
again Allelujah. Revelation nineteen, verse three. Those that have, in the
36:22
day of Grace most earnestly interceded for sinners, will in the day of judgment
36:30
be content to see them perish, and will glorify God in their destruction Numeral
36:37
two. Here is God's favorable regard to Abraham verse twenty nine. As before,
36:43
when Abraham prayed for Ishmael, God heard him for Isaac. So now
36:47
when he prayed for Sodom, he heard him for Lot. He remembered Abraham,
36:52
and for his sake sent Lot out of the overthrow. Note Number one.
37:00
God will certainly give an answer of peace to the prayer of faith in
37:04
his own way and time. Though for a while it seemed to be forgotten,
37:08
Yet sooner or later it will appear to be remembered. Number two.
37:13
The relations and friends of godly people fare the better for their interest in God
37:19
and intercessions with Him. It was out of respect to Abraham that Lot was
37:23
rescued. Perhaps this word encouraged Moses long afterwards to pray. Exodus thirty two,
37:30
verse thirteen, Lord, remember Abraham, and see Isaiah sixty three,
37:37
verse eleven. Lot's disgrace b c. One thousand, eight hundred ninety eight.
37:45
And Lot went up out of Zoor and dwelt in the mountain, and
37:47
his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoor, and
37:52
he dwelt in a cave. He and his two daughters, and the first
37:57
born said, unto the younger, our old, and there is not a
38:01
man in the earth to come in unto us, after the manner of all
38:05
the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we
38:08
will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And
38:14
they made their father drink wine that night, and the first born went in
38:19
and lay with her father, and he perceived not when she laid down,
38:23
nor when she arose. And it came to pass on the morrow that the
38:28
first born said into the younger, behold, I lay yesternight with my father.
38:32
Let us make him drink wine this night also, and go thou in
38:37
and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And
38:42
they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and
38:47
lay with him, and he perceived not when she lay down nor when she
38:52
arose. Thus we're both the daughters of Lot, with child by their father.
39:00
First born bere a son, and called his name Moab, the same
39:04
as the father of the Moabites unto this day. And the younger she also
39:08
bear a son, and called his name ben Ammy, the same as the
39:13
father of the children of Ammon unto this day. Here is numeral one.
39:20
The great trouble and distress that Lot was brought into after his deliverance verse thirty
39:28
number one. He was frightened out of zoor Durst, not dwell there,
39:32
probably because he was conscious to himself that it was a refuge of his own
39:37
choosing, and that herein he had foolishly prescribed to God, And therefore he
39:44
could not but distrust his safety in it, because he found it as wicked
39:49
as Sodom, and therefore concluded it could not long survive it. Or perhaps
39:53
he observed the rise and increase of those waters which, after the conflagration,
39:59
perhaps from Jordan, began to overflow the plain, and which, mixing with
40:04
the ruins by degrees, made the dead sea. In those waters, he
40:08
concluded, Zoor must needs perish, though it had escaped the fire, because
40:15
it stood upon the same flat Note. Settlements and shelters of our own choosing,
40:22
and in which we do not follow God, commonly prove uneasy to us.
40:29
Number two. He was forced to betake himself to the mountain and to
40:32
take up with a cave for his habitation there. Methinks it was strange that
40:38
he did not return to Abraham and put himself under his protection, to whom
40:44
he had once and again owed his safety. But the truth is there are
40:49
some good men that are not wise enough to know what is best for themselves.
40:54
Observe Subscript one. He was now glad to go to the mountain,
41:00
the place which God had appointed for his shelter. Note it is well if
41:06
disappointment in our way drivers at last to God's way. Subscript two. He
41:12
that a while ago could not find room enough for himself and his stock in
41:16
the whole land, but must jostle with Abraham and get as far from him
41:22
as he could, is now confined to a hole in a hill where he
41:27
has scarcely roomed to turn himself, and there he is solitary and trembling.
41:32
Note it is just with God to reduce those to poverty and restraint who have
41:38
abused their liberty and plenty. See also in Lot what those bring themselves to
41:45
at last that forsake the communion of saints for secular advantages, they will be
41:51
beaten with their own rod Numeral two. The great sin that Lot and his
41:58
daughters were guilty of when they were in this desolate place, it is a
42:02
sad story. Number one. His daughters laid a very wicked plot to bring
42:08
him to sin, and theirs was doubtless the greater guilt. They contrived,
42:15
under pretense of cheering up the spirits of their father in his present condition,
42:20
to make him drunk and then to lie with him. Verse thirty one.
42:24
And thirty two. Subscript one. Some think that their pretense was plausible.
42:31
Their father had no sons, they had no husbands, nor knew they were
42:37
to have any of the Holy seed, or if they had children by others,
42:40
their father's name would not be preserved in them. Some think that they
42:45
had the Messiah in their eye, who they hoped might descend from their father,
42:52
for he came from Terra's elder son, who separated from the rest of
42:57
Shechem's posterity as well as Abraham, and was now signally delivered out of Sodom.
43:02
Their mother and the rest of the family were gone, they might not
43:07
marry with the cursed Canaanites, and therefore they supposed that the end they aimed
43:14
at and the extremity they were brought to, would excuse the irregularity. Thus
43:21
the learned Monsieur Alex note good intentions are often abused to patronize bad actions.
43:30
But subscript two, whatever their pretense was, it is certain that their project
43:36
was very wicked and vile, and an impudent affront to the very light and
43:43
law of nature. Note se point one. The sight of God's most tremendous
43:50
judgments upon sinners will not of itself, without the grace of God restrain evil
43:55
hearts from evil practices. One would want wonder how the fire of lust could
44:01
possibly kindle upon those who had so lately been the eye witnesses of Sodom's flames.
44:08
Some point two. Solitude has its temptations as well as company, and
44:15
particularly to uncleanness. When Joseph was alone with his mistress, he was in
44:21
danger. Chapter thirty nine, Verse eleven. Relations that dwell together, especially
44:28
if solitary, have need carefully to watch even against the least evil thought of
44:34
this kind lest Satan get an advantage. Number two, Lot himself, by
44:42
his own folly and unwariness, was wretchedly overcome, and suffered himself so far
44:49
to be imposed upon by his own children as two knights together to be drunk
44:54
and to commit incest Verse thirty three, et cetera. Lord, what is
45:01
man? What are the best of men? When God leaves them to themselves?
45:07
See here subscript one the peril of security. Lot, who not only
45:14
kept himself sober and chaste in Sodom, but was a constant mourner for the
45:20
wickedness of the place and a witness against it, was yet in the mountain,
45:24
where he was alone, and as he thought, quite out of the
45:28
way of temptation shamefully overtaken. Let him therefore the things he stands, stands
45:35
high, and stands firm, take heed lest he fall. No mountain on
45:42
this side, the holy hill above, can set us out of the reach
45:45
of Satan's fiery darts. Subscript two, The peril of drunkenness. It is
45:52
not only a great sin itself, but it is the inlet of many sins.
45:59
It may prove the inlet of the worst and most unnatural sins, which
46:04
may be a perpetual wound and dishonor excellently does mister Herbert describe it. He
46:10
that is drunken, may his mother kill big with his sister. A man
46:16
may do that without reluctance when he is drunk, which when he is sober
46:22
he could not think of without horror. Subscript three, The peril of temptation
46:29
from our dearest relations and friends, whom we love and esteem and expect kindness.
46:35
From Lot, whose temperance and chastity were impregnable against the batteries of foreign
46:42
force, was surprised into sin and shame by the base treachery of his own
46:47
daughters. We must dread a snare wherever we are, and be always upon
46:54
our guard. Number three. In the clothes we have an a hound of
47:00
the birth of the two sons or grandsons, call them which you will,
47:05
of Lot, Moab and Ammon, the fathers of two nations neighbors to Israel,
47:13
and which we often read it in the Old Testament. Both together are
47:17
called the children of Lot Psalm eighty three, verse eight. Note though prosperous
47:24
births may attend incestuous conceptions, yet they are so far from justifying them that
47:30
they rather perpetuate the reproach of them, and entail infamy upon posterity. Yet
47:37
the tribe of Judah, of which our lord sprang, descended from such a
47:42
birth, and ruth A Moabidis has a name in his genealogy Matthew one,
47:49
verse three and five. Lastly, observe that after this we never read any
47:55
more of Lot, nor what became of him. No doubt he repented of
48:00
his sin and was pardoned. But from the silence of the scripture concerning him,
48:05
henceforward we may learn that drunkenness, as it makes men forget fool so
48:12
it makes them forgotten and many a name which otherwise might have been remembered with
48:17
respect, is burit by it in contempt and oblivion. End of chapter recording
