- 1:39Speaker 2: For Turning the Page.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Turning the Page as a series that happens at the
- 1:44Speaker 3: beginning of every year, and for it, I sit down
- 1:48Speaker 3: with some of your favorite guests from the past year
- 1:50Speaker 3: to chat about what lessons they are bringing with them
- 1:53Speaker 3: from twenty twenty two into the new year. Each guest
- 1:58Speaker 3: gives us highlights from their past through sixty five, offers
- 2:01Speaker 3: up a word that they're focusing on for the next
- 2:04Speaker 3: three sixty five, and then offers up advice on how
- 2:08Speaker 3: to move into the next fifty two weeks with grace
- 2:10Speaker 3: and a positive outlook. For today's episode, I am kicking
- 2:14Speaker 3: things off with the one, the Only, Kira Dematto. She's
- 2:18Speaker 3: a pro runner, once the American record holder in the marathon,
- 2:23Speaker 3: and all around truly just an outstanding human.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I love being able to catch up with Kira.
- 2:29Speaker 3: The perfect way for us to really have a few
- 2:32Speaker 3: laughs as we get.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Into the swing of things. With twenty twenty three.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Make sure, if you're not doing so yet, you are
- 2:39Speaker 3: following along with Hurdle over on social media.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It's at Hurdle podcast.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I am at Emily, a Body and the last little
- 2:46Speaker 3: bit of housekeeping.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I wanted you here on Wednesday night.
- 2:49Speaker 3: If you are listening to this in real time, on
- 2:51Speaker 3: January fourth, I am hosting a goal setting workshop. You
- 2:55Speaker 3: have to be able to attend it live. It is online,
- 2:59Speaker 3: so that should help. It is at seven thirty pm
- 3:02Speaker 3: Eastern and I would love to see you there. There
- 3:05Speaker 3: are a few spots left, so to snag one, click
- 3:08Speaker 3: on over to the show notes and secure it today.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's it for now. Oh with that, let's get things started.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Let's get to hurdling today.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I am sitting back down with my friend at Kira
- 3:31Speaker 3: de motto.
- 3:31Speaker 2: How are you doing today?
- 3:33Speaker 1: I am, I'm doing awesome mentally physically. I have a
- 3:38Speaker 1: little bit of like a scraggly throat, so but I
- 3:41Speaker 1: actually never mind getting to scraggly. Is it scraggly? Is
- 3:44Speaker 1: that scratchy? Scratchy? Maybe scratchy is what I'm looking for,
- 3:47Speaker 1: But I never mind getting scratchy throat because it always
- 3:49Speaker 1: takes my like voice down a little bit, a little
- 3:52Speaker 1: less squeaky, So I'm feeling a little more radio DJ,
- 3:54Speaker 1: which is like perfect for podcast.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Perfect So you and I can be like this together
- 4:00Speaker 3: because I'm constantly on this wave.
- 4:03Speaker 1: But yours is like yours is sexy. We've talked about
- 4:06Speaker 1: this in the first time. Yours is like incredible. Mine's
- 4:09Speaker 1: just like a little not as incredible.
- 4:12Speaker 3: But well, I think it's fantastic, and I think you're fantastic,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and I'm so excited to have you as a part
- 4:19Speaker 3: of the Turning the Page series this year. I told
- 4:23Speaker 3: you that you were one of the most listened to
- 4:27Speaker 3: guests from the past three sixty five and I was
- 4:31Speaker 3: surprised that you were surprised.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I couldn't believe when you said that. When you asked
- 4:36Speaker 1: me back on, I was like, wait, so hold on,
- 4:39Speaker 1: what you are like I didn't ruin it the first time.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And then you said I was one of the most
- 4:44Speaker 1: watched or listened or whatever, and that, yeah, I kind
- 4:48Speaker 1: of I don't know, it feels like a joke, but
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm here though.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Oh well, I'm so happy that you're here, even with
- 4:54Speaker 3: your scraggly, scratchy voice. And a great person to kick
- 4:58Speaker 3: start this series with, because you've had one hell of
- 5:03Speaker 3: a year. The series coming out the first week of
- 5:06Speaker 3: the new year, but in twenty twenty two, a lot
- 5:10Speaker 3: happened for you.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I went for it, man, I just important twenty twenty two.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I just followed goals that excited me. I probably overextended
- 5:19Speaker 1: myself a little bit at the end, but I would
- 5:22Speaker 1: do it again exactly the same way. I don't regret anything.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It was a good year.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I love to hear that, so I mean, of course,
- 5:29Speaker 3: the first thing that we need to recap here is
- 5:32Speaker 3: that you became the American record holder for the marathon
- 5:36Speaker 3: at the very beginning of twenty twenty two. Looking back
- 5:41Speaker 3: on that experience, do you have any immediate highlights from
- 5:46Speaker 3: that day aside from breaking the tape.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I think the thing that keeps replaying in my mind
- 5:53Speaker 1: is I broke the tape and my first thought was like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm never running again.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Ever.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That was really hard. But then my second thought was like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm so proud I had the courage to start, because
- 6:06Speaker 1: like there were so many different times, like in my
- 6:10Speaker 1: second round running journey, where it was really hard and
- 6:14Speaker 1: I just didn't know if I could push through, or
- 6:15Speaker 1: I just didn't even know if I could start. You know,
- 6:17Speaker 1: like the first day when I went for a run,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I tried to run three minutes and I couldn't make
- 6:22Speaker 1: it the whole three minutes. I only made it ninety seconds,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and like I could have quit then, you know, So
- 6:26Speaker 1: just thinking that, like I was just so happy that
- 6:30Speaker 1: I found the courage to figure out the what if,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and the what if turns out was a really beautiful thing.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So I think that's the thing that like I just
- 6:37Speaker 1: think the most is I just feel just kind of lucky.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I guess that I kept finding like a reason to
- 6:43Speaker 1: show up and keep going and it turned into something
- 6:45Speaker 1: really beautiful.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And what a beautiful takeaway for so many hearing that you,
- 6:52Speaker 3: the woman who ultimately became the American record holder in
- 6:56Speaker 3: the marathon, had trouble running for three minutes at a
- 7:00Speaker 3: time applicable way beyond running, right, just this idea that
- 7:05Speaker 3: if we can break it up into little doables, then
- 7:09Speaker 3: who knows what can happen next?
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And that's like if you would have told me
- 7:13Speaker 1: on that day, like Kira, like in six years or
- 7:17Speaker 1: whenever it was, Yeah, yeah, about six years from now,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you'd set the American record, like today's day one of
- 7:23Speaker 1: training for that, I wouldn't have started. I would have
- 7:26Speaker 1: like thrown my shoes at whoever said that and just
- 7:28Speaker 1: walked away because I'm like, no, there's no way. It
- 7:30Speaker 1: just was so intimidating. So for me, like setting those
- 7:34Speaker 1: small manageable goals and if you hit it, then great,
- 7:37Speaker 1: but if you don't, then keep trying to hit it,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know, and then once hitting it, just think, wow,
- 7:42Speaker 1: if I could do that, if I could run for
- 7:43Speaker 1: a whole three minutes, like what else is there? Could
- 7:46Speaker 1: I do five minutes?
- 7:47Speaker 2: You know?
- 7:47Speaker 1: And it's just like it's snowballed from there. But it's
- 7:50Speaker 1: just like just knowing. I don't know, like in a way,
- 7:53Speaker 1: it just feels like some like fairytale story that I
- 7:57Speaker 1: was living, you know, and I was through all the
- 7:58Speaker 1: ups and downs. But that's kind of how I feel
- 8:01Speaker 1: like thinking about where I started to where like I
- 8:03Speaker 1: ended up this year is just a kind of a
- 8:06Speaker 1: cool thing to live for sure.
- 8:08Speaker 3: For sure, And you speak on the greatness of setting
- 8:13Speaker 3: those small achievable goals, do you remember, aside from getting
- 8:18Speaker 3: through those three minutes, maybe a year or two into
- 8:21Speaker 3: this journey of picking back up with running.
- 8:25Speaker 2: What some of those smaller goals looked like. For example, Yeah, So.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Like for me, after I had my second child and
- 8:35Speaker 1: then I knew we were done with having kids, I
- 8:37Speaker 1: was like, Okay, it's my body again. Because for a
- 8:39Speaker 1: while I just felt like I was this like machine
- 8:42Speaker 1: in a way, and I didn't feel like it was mine,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Like I was doing whatever I thought was best for
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, being pregnant or nursing or whatever. So I
- 8:50Speaker 1: finally like had control back and that was kind of exciting.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So starting with like three minutes, and then the goals
- 8:57Speaker 1: like just kept changing. So once I'd hit that would
- 9:00Speaker 1: be five minutes, and then if it was I could
- 9:01Speaker 1: run for ten minutes with only one walk break, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: they kept building up from there. But what I did
- 9:06Speaker 1: is I like also had like little carrots. So whatever
- 9:09Speaker 1: I hit my goal, like I would celebrate like I
- 9:12Speaker 1: won the Olympics, Like I remember the day where I
- 9:13Speaker 1: did run three minutes, like I seriously like finished that run,
- 9:17Speaker 1: like I finished my marathons, like double deuce is in
- 9:20Speaker 1: the air, like celebrating like crazy, you know. So I
- 9:23Speaker 1: think setting those small measurable roles, But then like celebrating
- 9:26Speaker 1: in a way, you know, just even if it's just
- 9:28Speaker 1: like a pat on the back or like, can you
- 9:30Speaker 1: do like a SELFI five? Maybe maybe I need to
- 9:32Speaker 1: start doing.
- 9:33Speaker 2: That like thing that's called a clap.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Oh okay, wow, I never really thought about that SELFI
- 9:42Speaker 1: five is a clap?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Wow?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Okay? I well, just clapping for yourself, then I guess.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I'm just I'm dead. I'm dead.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm not gonna call it clapping anymore. I'm just gonna call.
- 9:55Speaker 2: It high vibe.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can give myself a lot of
- 10:00Speaker 1: high fives with cheering for you.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Perfect. Yes, I love that.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I love that takeaway of just making sure that you're
- 10:07Speaker 3: celebrating all the wins as they come, no matter how
- 10:10Speaker 3: small or her bit how big they are. And I
- 10:14Speaker 3: also love this picture of you celebrating the finish of
- 10:19Speaker 3: every single marathon you run. I feel like there have
- 10:22Speaker 3: been like some gifts as of recent and maybe you
- 10:25Speaker 3: can speak to these, but the ones that are like
- 10:27Speaker 3: I want to celebrate anything in my life the way
- 10:29Speaker 3: that Kira Dematto celebrates finishing every single marathon.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Well, it's so funny because I did one marathon in
- 10:39Speaker 1: twenty thirteen. My goal was to qualify for Boston, but
- 10:43Speaker 1: I really thought it was in like three twenty shape.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But it went very poorly and I ran three forty
- 10:49Speaker 1: nine forty nine, So I didn't qualify for Boston, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: I walked a lot. And so now jump forward to
- 10:59Speaker 1: round two, and I've told everyone celebrate no matter what
- 11:02Speaker 1: your goal is, if you hit your goal, you celebrate
- 11:04Speaker 1: when you cross any finish line. And after I broke
- 11:06Speaker 1: the American record, the Missoula Montana said, hey, and we
- 11:10Speaker 1: have a video of Kira celebrating her first marathon. And
- 11:13Speaker 1: my heart at first sank because I was like, oh no,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I've been telling everyone to celebrate whether you hit it
- 11:18Speaker 1: or not. And I'm like, oh my gosh, Like what
- 11:20Speaker 1: if I didn't celebrate that one would I be like
- 11:23Speaker 1: a fraud? So I opened the link and like, that
- 11:26Speaker 1: was the toughest race I've ever done, Like I thought
- 11:29Speaker 1: about quinning so many times. I didn't think I was
- 11:31Speaker 1: going to make it the finish line. Like my husband
- 11:33Speaker 1: and I both wanted to qualify for Boston to run
- 11:35Speaker 1: Boston together. So I felt like I was. I know
- 11:37Speaker 1: I wasn't, but I felt like I was letting him down.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I felt like I was letting myself down. But I
- 11:41Speaker 1: still finished that, and so I washed it back and
- 11:44Speaker 1: I celebrated, like just like I celebrated when I broke
- 11:47Speaker 1: the American record. I held up the two deuces and
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, I am happy. I've been
- 11:52Speaker 1: myself my whole life, and I'm not. But for a second,
- 11:55Speaker 1: I was like, oh, no, am I fraud? But no,
- 11:57Speaker 1: when I celebrated the same exact way.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Wishing everyone else to celebrate is a good thing to
- 12:03Speaker 3: be a fraud about if you've got a fraud on anything.
- 12:07Speaker 2: So yes, like we said here huge beginning to the year.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Did that major accomplishment really shake things up? Did it
- 12:14Speaker 3: make you feel some kind of way? Did it change
- 12:16Speaker 3: what you had on deck?
- 12:18Speaker 1: I think it just a little more attention, Like nothing
- 12:20Speaker 1: really changed, Like my routine at my house stayed the same,
- 12:24Speaker 1: Like my goals for the future stayed the same. Like
- 12:28Speaker 1: that was kind of, you know, just a checkpoint along
- 12:31Speaker 1: the way. So I was dreaming still even past hitting that,
- 12:34Speaker 1: so you know, my direction and how you know, what
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'm aiming towards still stay the same. But I just
- 12:39Speaker 1: get a little more attention now, Like one time I
- 12:41Speaker 1: was at the grocery store and I dropped something and
- 12:44Speaker 1: some woman ran up. She's like, oh, Kira, here, I'll
- 12:46Speaker 1: pick that up. And she was the sweetest woman, but
- 12:49Speaker 1: she knew who I was and also how long was
- 12:52Speaker 1: she watching me to notice that I dropped something?
- 12:56Speaker 2: But she was the sweetest woman.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But it's just stuff like that which is awesome. And
- 13:01Speaker 1: I love being able to connect with other people through
- 13:03Speaker 1: that way. So really, like it's just it feels like
- 13:05Speaker 1: a big gift.
- 13:06Speaker 2: It's a big gift.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I would imagine that from the get go being recognized was.
- 13:11Speaker 2: A little crazy. Do you have another story to share
- 13:13Speaker 2: about that?
- 13:14Speaker 1: I remember like one of the first times I got recognized.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I was like this was at Houston actually when I
- 13:18Speaker 1: set the American Records. So I was like hey, Kira,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and I like turn around and she's like no you
- 13:25Speaker 1: and I'm like me and she's like, yeah, you can
- 13:27Speaker 1: I get a picture with you? And I was like whoa, Okay, yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 1: let's do this. This is awesome. But I also think
- 13:33Speaker 1: it's funny. It's like can I like, do you mind
- 13:35Speaker 1: if I bother you for a picture? And I'm like,
- 13:37Speaker 1: do you realize how good you're making? Me feel about myself,
- 13:39Speaker 1: like you want to get a picture with me, Why
- 13:42Speaker 1: would you apologize for that? I feel like it's such
- 13:44Speaker 1: a compliment.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I love that.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Okay, So now when we look at the past year
- 13:51Speaker 3: as a whole, if you had to maybe articulate two
- 13:56Speaker 3: to three of the biggest lessons you're taking with you
- 14:00Speaker 3: into twenty twenty three, where do we begin?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Oh?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Man, I think, like my superhero power that I feel
- 14:09Speaker 1: like I really owned this year is like it's okay
- 14:13Speaker 1: to fail, Like failing is really not that bad, you know.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And I feel like earlier in my career I was
- 14:19Speaker 1: so afraid, like the fear of failure almost like is
- 14:22Speaker 1: crippling that you don't even want to start. But like
- 14:24Speaker 1: this year, I'm like, well, I'm going to go for
- 14:26Speaker 1: this and if I get it, great, and if I don't,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I learn something. So I think like this year, I've
- 14:31Speaker 1: done some different distance races. I've you know, you know
- 14:35Speaker 1: when I ran at World Champs that was only seventeen days.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Notice that you know that probably was going to be
- 14:41Speaker 1: a failure, which it ended up going like decent, So
- 14:43Speaker 1: I was happy with that. But you know, I took
- 14:45Speaker 1: risks this year and I went for it, and so
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'm really like proud of that, and whether it went well,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I hit my goal or not, you know, I learned
- 14:54Speaker 1: something and you move on. So I think that's like
- 14:56Speaker 1: my biggest thing this year, and I feel like that
- 14:58Speaker 1: might be my superhero powers. I'm just not afraid to fail.
- 15:02Speaker 3: We know that we can learn from our quote unquote failures.
- 15:05Speaker 3: But what would you say your biggest one was last year?
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think for me, my biggest failure this year was
- 15:10Speaker 1: at Berlin. Like I really I knew I was in shape,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I was faster, Berlin Kira was more fit than Houston
- 15:20Speaker 1: Kira when I set the American record, So I was
- 15:22Speaker 1: so fit, training was going great, I was healthy, and
- 15:26Speaker 1: it was an off day. I think there was like
- 15:28Speaker 1: a few things that I can contribute to that, but
- 15:31Speaker 1: I really like fell short of a big goal that day,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but I learned a lot and so I think I'll
- 15:38Speaker 1: be stronger for it. I think it caused me to
- 15:40Speaker 1: really look at my race nutrition and I've structured now
- 15:44Speaker 1: a better plan that I think is actually going to
- 15:46Speaker 1: be a whole lot better. And I think it was
- 15:49Speaker 1: for whatever reason. I think my body was changing what
- 15:51Speaker 1: worked for me last year wasn't working for me this year,
- 15:53Speaker 1: so I think that really caused me to not reinvent
- 15:56Speaker 1: the wheel, but restructure things. So I think that was
- 15:59Speaker 1: a really important lesson that I took from that.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Let's flesh out what the learnings were from that day
- 16:06Speaker 3: in particular.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So I think the first thing was like it was
- 16:10Speaker 1: just an off day, Like I was on my period
- 16:12Speaker 1: and I was feeling off. So that's, you know, like
- 16:14Speaker 1: you can't that just sucks when that a lot, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: when yeah, you're feeling bad on a day that you
- 16:20Speaker 1: need to be feeling good is not awesome. I think
- 16:24Speaker 1: that my race strategy wasn't that great. I had brought
- 16:28Speaker 1: I kind of was under the impression that I wouldn't
- 16:31Speaker 1: have too many people women to run with, so I
- 16:33Speaker 1: brought my own pacers, and within five k of the race,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think I was maybe in twentieth place. There was
- 16:39Speaker 1: tons of women that went out really fast, but I
- 16:42Speaker 1: was so focused on my individual race that day that
- 16:46Speaker 1: I didn't ever race them. So I think that that
- 16:48Speaker 1: in that moment, I should have thought, Okay, well maybe
- 16:51Speaker 1: I can instruct the pacers or we can all go
- 16:53Speaker 1: and race people. But it just I feel like what
- 16:55Speaker 1: I'd done so great in twenty twenty two was race,
- 16:59Speaker 1: Like I'd go in and just work on racing tactics
- 17:01Speaker 1: and I just race people. I didn't have my own
- 17:03Speaker 1: time goal other than just trying to win races, so
- 17:07Speaker 1: and I didn't do that in Berlin. So that was
- 17:09Speaker 1: kind of like my one regret during the race is
- 17:11Speaker 1: I should have just raced, and kind of I think
- 17:13Speaker 1: somewhere around twenty miles I got a cramp, and I
- 17:15Speaker 1: think that was a couple different things. I'm not sure if,
- 17:19Speaker 1: like the Berlin water is made up a little differently,
- 17:21Speaker 1: they have more calcium levels, so I think when mixing
- 17:24Speaker 1: that with my sports strength, maybe that was giving me
- 17:26Speaker 1: a cramp or could have just spen that I was
- 17:28Speaker 1: on my period, you know, so something nutrition wise wasn't
- 17:32Speaker 1: going quite right. But but I learned, you know, and
- 17:37Speaker 1: you know I won't I won't do that again.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Won't let it happen again.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I mean, you did the best you could with what
- 17:43Speaker 3: you had, right, And I feel as though this is
- 17:46Speaker 3: an example of this lesson of being okay to fail
- 17:50Speaker 3: right and knowing that, as you said, that failure has
- 17:53Speaker 3: the opportunity to teach us something each and every time.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think also, like in used in
- 18:01Speaker 1: during that race, I was hitting my goals and that's
- 18:04Speaker 1: really exciting. You know, when you're on your way to
- 18:05Speaker 1: your goal or doing your best ever, there's a lot
- 18:07Speaker 1: of adrill adriddline and you're feeling really positive and you're
- 18:10Speaker 1: excited you're still on your way. But when things take
- 18:13Speaker 1: a turn for the worst, like in a race, it's
- 18:16Speaker 1: a lot harder to stay motivated and stay like with it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: So that's one thing that I am proud of at
- 18:21Speaker 1: Berlin is that I never stopped fighting, you know, Like
- 18:24Speaker 1: I did all I can to get the cramp go away,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and once it did, I start, you know, I fought
- 18:28Speaker 1: again and passed a lot of people in the end.
- 18:30Speaker 1: But that's one thing like my takeaways, like, you know what,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I never surrendered, Like even though my goals were slipping
- 18:36Speaker 1: out of reach of being on a podium or running
- 18:39Speaker 1: my fastest time, like, I still fought through it and
- 18:42Speaker 1: I did the best I could that day. So awkaway
- 18:44Speaker 1: proud knowing that I really did lay it all out
- 18:46Speaker 1: there that day.
- 18:47Speaker 3: You keep referencing, like the goals that you have, would
- 18:50Speaker 3: you be willing to talk a little bit about what
- 18:52Speaker 3: some of those consist of these days.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I thought I was in sub to
- 18:57Speaker 1: eighteen marathon shape that day, and I've never podiumed at
- 19:01Speaker 1: like a world marathon major, and I wanted to do
- 19:03Speaker 1: that too, So those were kind of my two big
- 19:05Speaker 1: goals going into Berlin.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Makes sense, makes sense?
- 19:08Speaker 3: Okay, So aside from a quote unquote failing at Berlin,
- 19:12Speaker 3: you mentioned going for it all of twenty twenty two.
- 19:15Speaker 3: What's another instance of you going for it this past year?
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think I lined up to race fourteen times, and
- 19:25Speaker 1: don't I don't think there's another like pro runner that
- 19:30Speaker 1: raced that many. Maybe maybe some sprinters, especially with all
- 19:33Speaker 1: their heats. But like it was, I think a total
- 19:35Speaker 1: of one hundred and eighty like racing miles, which for
- 19:38Speaker 1: an ultra marathon or I guess isn't that much, but
- 19:40Speaker 1: for someone that does a lot, you know, I did
- 19:42Speaker 1: some five k's and six I did a six k
- 19:45Speaker 1: and ten ks, and that's a lot. So it was
- 19:49Speaker 1: cool in that way that I pretty much every other
- 19:51Speaker 1: weekend or every third week, I was traveling somewhere to race.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And when I look back on yeah, twenty twenty two like,
- 19:58Speaker 1: it just turned thirty eight and I'm a and I
- 20:01Speaker 1: just had like my best race senior ever. So I
- 20:04Speaker 1: really put myself out there. I went into races that
- 20:06Speaker 1: really excited me. I had did a lot of bucket
- 20:08Speaker 1: lace lists, races that I'd always wanted to run, like
- 20:10Speaker 1: the Foulmouth Race. That was a really cool one to
- 20:13Speaker 1: be a part of, and so yeah, kind of just
- 20:15Speaker 1: one for it.
- 20:17Speaker 3: What do you think that your most difficult moment was
- 20:21Speaker 3: last year?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Probably I did the New York Marathon and it was
- 20:26Speaker 1: definitely in that race and coming back. So I ran
- 20:30Speaker 1: World Champs and then I think I had maybe nine
- 20:34Speaker 1: or ten weeks and then I did Berlin and then
- 20:37Speaker 1: I did New York six weeks later, and we knew
- 20:39Speaker 1: that could go either way. Like we felt we wanted
- 20:42Speaker 1: to race New York because it was actually kind of
- 20:45Speaker 1: always our plan in the spring, but especially with Berlin
- 20:49Speaker 1: kind of being a little bit subpar, We're like, okay,
- 20:52Speaker 1: well we're so fit, we just haven't shown our fitness yet.
- 20:54Speaker 1: So we were really excited about New York. But I
- 20:57Speaker 1: think my body was really tired going into that because
- 20:59Speaker 1: a couple slead into the race. I just couldn't stay healthy,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and I got a throat infection and I had like
- 21:05Speaker 1: some sort of flu thing. So I think my body
- 21:07Speaker 1: was just done, and so we were kind of getting
- 21:10Speaker 1: that feedback that I was probably pushing it a little
- 21:12Speaker 1: bit too hard. But but I went forward anyways, and
- 21:16Speaker 1: I showed up healthy, like I was over everything by
- 21:18Speaker 1: the time that I got to the starting line. So
- 21:20Speaker 1: I felt really healthy on race day, but somewhere around
- 21:22Speaker 1: thirteen to sixteen, I was like, oh no, this is
- 21:26Speaker 1: not good, Like I think New York's of course you
- 21:29Speaker 1: really want to be fresh for and I wasn't fresh,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and I feel like I was kind of just pulling
- 21:34Speaker 1: it together. But so that was a hard one because
- 21:37Speaker 1: in my head, I was like what do I do here?
- 21:39Speaker 1: Do I quit or do I finish? You know, like
- 21:42Speaker 1: this is really not going very well. My quads were
- 21:46Speaker 1: on fire, like I just felt like I couldn't get
- 21:48Speaker 1: into a good rhythm, like but it was also just
- 21:50Speaker 1: like you know, hitting the marathon wall, I guess, but
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I'm gonna just keep running until I
- 21:55Speaker 1: can't run anymore, you know. And I made it to
- 21:58Speaker 1: the finish line, and I was really proud that I
- 22:00Speaker 1: did because also it was my son's eighth birthday, so
- 22:02Speaker 1: I didn't want to like quit on his birthday, you know. So,
- 22:06Speaker 1: But but yeah, that was that was a tough one
- 22:08Speaker 1: because like when you're in a race, being like should
- 22:10Speaker 1: I even finish that? That's a dark space to be in,
- 22:12Speaker 1: you know what. I'm proud I.

- 25:29Speaker 3: Let's get back to the episode and again, like talking
- 25:42Speaker 3: about the running lessons, kind of transcending to the rest
- 25:48Speaker 3: of life, right this space of asking yourself what do
- 25:52Speaker 3: I do when things get hard and having the grit
- 25:56Speaker 3: and perseverance to keep on keeping on.
- 26:00Speaker 2: That was a hard day, Like no matter how you
- 26:03Speaker 2: slice it.
- 26:03Speaker 3: I think I read yesterday that that was actually the
- 26:06Speaker 3: hottest New York City marathon on records. So to show
- 26:10Speaker 3: up that day and do what you did regardless, like what, like,
- 26:14Speaker 3: kudos to you, you know, mm.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Hmm, I don't know. It's just you just don't quit,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know, Like I knew I wasn't going to hit
- 26:21Speaker 1: my a gole or beagle or seagull, but the but
- 26:24Speaker 1: when all those like flew out the window, it's like,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm healthy, Like I hurts a lot, but
- 26:29Speaker 1: I can finish, you know. So I'm proud that I
- 26:32Speaker 1: was able to pull something out to just keep going.
- 26:34Speaker 3: But what do you tell the person who does get
- 26:38Speaker 3: to a point where they realize that they do need
- 26:43Speaker 3: to quit, Like that choice becomes one that is.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Not theirs to make.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Maybe it's made for them by in the case of
- 26:53Speaker 3: running your body or just other extenuating circumstances.
- 26:57Speaker 2: How does someone navigate because we don't.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Try to fail, right, We try with a certain goal
- 27:05Speaker 3: in mind, and sometimes we have to deviate from the plan.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think that's tough too, especially when you
- 27:11Speaker 1: feel like that choice isn't yours, you know. But there
- 27:13Speaker 1: are times like whenever, like in a race, there are
- 27:16Speaker 1: so many times I want to quit, but I ask myself,
- 27:18Speaker 1: like can I keep going? Like is this is this physical?
- 27:21Speaker 1: Like is this like above me? And if it's something
- 27:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna hurt myself more or cause my body harm
- 27:27Speaker 1: or you know, from heat or from hypothermia, or if
- 27:30Speaker 1: like something hurts that you know is like not right.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Like it's okay to be sore and it's pay for
- 27:36Speaker 1: your legs to feel heavy. That's normal to work through.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But when something's not right, it's just it's just not safe,
- 27:40Speaker 1: you know. So but it's it's tough to like think
- 27:43Speaker 1: through that in the in the moment and figure it out.
- 27:46Speaker 1: But you know, it's just like there's just sometimes it's
- 27:48Speaker 1: not your day, you know, And sometimes it's smarter actually
- 27:52Speaker 1: to you know, to listen to your body or to
- 27:56Speaker 1: people around you and not push it through because you'll
- 27:59Speaker 1: have another day to fight, you know. But yeah, it's uh,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I don't know, it gets hard right before you level up.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I guess. So those days that are the hardest, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: just think you're that much closer. You're playing the boss
- 28:10Speaker 1: that level, and you'rre about once you beat that boss,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you're gonna get to the next level.
- 28:13Speaker 2: So we love a level up. We love a level up.
- 28:17Speaker 3: What would you say is a word that you are
- 28:20Speaker 3: bringing with you into twenty twenty three?
- 28:24Speaker 4: Oh man, this is so funny that you asked this
- 28:28Speaker 4: because over so, my son Tommy, who's eight years old,
- 28:33Speaker 4: he's been really into making his own like March Madness brackets,
- 28:38Speaker 4: but sometimes he does it with like animals or like
- 28:41Speaker 4: letters or like you wonder where he gets it from.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I think it's from all our Oreo Madness challenge.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I was literally just gonna say he gets it from you.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he gets it honestly. So over Thanksgiving he
- 28:51Speaker 1: decided that he was going to do like a word madness.
- 28:55Speaker 1: So he put one hundred and twenty eight words into
- 28:59Speaker 1: this like tournament style, and so at the Thanksgiving table,
- 29:03Speaker 1: I like brought up. I was like, hey, you know, everyone,
- 29:06Speaker 1: Thomas has been doing like a March Madness just with
- 29:09Speaker 1: like words, and so everyone got curious and so he
- 29:12Speaker 1: read the top sixteen. So everyone at the family picked
- 29:15Speaker 1: their word and we went through this like to see
- 29:18Speaker 1: what it was. But the word that I picked was buzzsaw,
- 29:20Speaker 1: So of.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Course, of course you did.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna use that one. I think I'm
- 29:24Speaker 1: going to use that one. But it was really funny
- 29:25Speaker 1: because like someone picked music, someone picked Oh, there was
- 29:30Speaker 1: like quagmire was one of the words. Mom was a
- 29:34Speaker 1: word universe, so it was like a really big wide range,
- 29:37Speaker 1: like some sort of crocodile I'd never heard of, like
- 29:40Speaker 1: a big name for a crocodile. Was so but it
- 29:42Speaker 1: was really funny. But buzzsaw actually was number two. The
- 29:45Speaker 1: winning word was imagination, which they loved that. Yeah, that
- 29:50Speaker 1: was a really good one.
- 29:51Speaker 2: So, uh, what does what does buzzsaw mean to you?
- 29:54Speaker 3: Kira?
- 29:55Speaker 1: Just like taking your goals and going for it, you know,
- 29:58Speaker 1: like don't let anything stand in your path, just like
- 30:01Speaker 1: a buzzsaw, you just cut right through and like you
- 30:03Speaker 1: get to where you need to go, you know. So
- 30:05Speaker 1: it's you know, don't let anything stand in your way,
- 30:08Speaker 1: just go right on through and reach your goals.
- 30:11Speaker 3: When you think about the past three sixty five, Who
- 30:15Speaker 3: would you say was one of the individuals that you
- 30:18Speaker 3: were most grateful for their presence over this year.
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think if I want to continue sharing a bed
- 30:25Speaker 1: with this person, I think I'm gonna have to say
- 30:27Speaker 1: my husband. All series though, he is like he's my rock,
- 30:33Speaker 1: you know, he keeps it really fun. He knows me
- 30:35Speaker 1: better than anyone in this world, and he can just
- 30:38Speaker 1: tell like what I need and with like running, like
- 30:41Speaker 1: I need it to be really fun, Like I need
- 30:43Speaker 1: it to be my fun thing. So he keeps it
- 30:45Speaker 1: light and he comes to, you know, all the races
- 30:48Speaker 1: that he can, and he's super busy too, but he's
- 30:51Speaker 1: definitely been my number one supporter. And he has a
- 30:55Speaker 1: big like water bottle that he wrote super Fan on
- 30:57Speaker 1: it because he's just he's a super fan and it's
- 31:00Speaker 1: kind of fun just to have, you know, someone support
- 31:02Speaker 1: you in that way. So that's I feel really lucky
- 31:04Speaker 1: for him.
- 31:07Speaker 3: For some reason, I'm like in my head thinking about
- 31:10Speaker 3: the people that like might struggle with answering that question,
- 31:14Speaker 3: and like, how beautiful is it that you have like
- 31:17Speaker 3: such a special and compassionate partner for anyone who may
- 31:22Speaker 3: be approaching twenty twenty three and maybe navigating being at
- 31:27Speaker 3: like the crux of a relationship, or just kind of
- 31:30Speaker 3: struggling to find their footing in some way.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Could you offer a tip about showing up for yourself
- 31:36Speaker 2: during some of your hard times.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Well, I think that is so spun on because like
- 31:41Speaker 1: I found running when it was for myself. Like he's
- 31:44Speaker 1: he's now like a super super fan, But like when
- 31:47Speaker 1: I he was deployed for a really long time when
- 31:50Speaker 1: my kids were zero in one, so he was gone
- 31:53Speaker 1: for by the time my daughter was two, he was
- 31:54Speaker 1: gone for over a year. So like I put running
- 31:57Speaker 1: in my life at that time because I needed some
- 32:00Speaker 1: thing to make me feel good about myself. And when
- 32:03Speaker 1: he came back, it was kind of uncomfortable, honestly, because
- 32:06Speaker 1: I had put running in my life for me and
- 32:09Speaker 1: I needed to figure out a way to make it
- 32:10Speaker 1: like a Wii for the family. But I think it's
- 32:15Speaker 1: okay to do something for yourself and feel good about
- 32:17Speaker 1: yourself and then find a community around that and make
- 32:21Speaker 1: sure it's people that are going to be building you up.
- 32:23Speaker 1: But it's you know, running is easy because I feel
- 32:25Speaker 1: like joining a running group or getting a coach, or
- 32:27Speaker 1: just finding that support system in that way, like maybe
- 32:30Speaker 1: it's not necessarily a family member, like none of my
- 32:33Speaker 1: My mom is like my biggest cheerleader, but no one
- 32:36Speaker 1: in my family run. No one knew anything about that.
- 32:38Speaker 1: So I formed that support group like outside with friends
- 32:41Speaker 1: or with running buddies or with coaches. So I think,
- 32:44Speaker 1: like finding that person for you, like I feel very
- 32:47Speaker 1: fortunate that I share a bed with that person, but
- 32:50Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be that person. I think you
- 32:53Speaker 1: can find that community around you wherever you are.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this makes me think about the joyless
- 33:00Speaker 3: so that I've like rest referenced on the show so
- 33:02Speaker 3: many times, and not to say that like when I
- 33:05Speaker 3: have gone through things in my personal life, really emotional
- 33:08Speaker 3: moments that I've always been able to like look at
- 33:10Speaker 3: my joy list and be like, I'm depressed. But if
- 33:12Speaker 3: I go outside and read a book right now in
- 33:14Speaker 3: the sunshine, like I'm going to feel great. Like that
- 33:16Speaker 3: doesn't always work, but at the very least, like having
- 33:19Speaker 3: a list of things that you know have in the
- 33:22Speaker 3: past brought you a sense of contentment and fulfillment and
- 33:25Speaker 3: joy can be a step in the right direction to
- 33:28Speaker 3: shifting your perspective or your mood on a given day
- 33:32Speaker 3: where things feel especially hard.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think that's when you need it the most.
- 33:36Speaker 1: You know, I don't want to run every single day,
- 33:38Speaker 1: but it's on those days that I force myself and
- 33:41Speaker 1: I get myself at the door. Then I'm most proud
- 33:43Speaker 1: that I did it because I knew how hard it
- 33:44Speaker 1: was and it was really interesting. I had a conversation
- 33:47Speaker 1: recently with one of the hydro coaches, Aisha, and she
- 33:51Speaker 1: said that whenever she has a day she doesn't want
- 33:54Speaker 1: to run, she looks back because she thinks like running
- 33:57Speaker 1: is a constant, Like it's the same every single day.
- 34:00Speaker 1: So what is it about me that I don't want
- 34:03Speaker 1: to run today? And kind of analyzing it from that
- 34:05Speaker 1: instead of like, oh running feels hard or it's this.
- 34:07Speaker 1: You know, running is always the same exact thing. So
- 34:10Speaker 1: what is it about you? Like, do you feel like overwhelmed,
- 34:13Speaker 1: do you feel stressed? Is there a lot going on?
- 34:16Speaker 1: And kind of answering that and then figuring out how
- 34:18Speaker 1: to put running into your life. I think I had
- 34:22Speaker 1: never looked at it that way, but I think that
- 34:24Speaker 1: was kind of a just a unique way to think
- 34:28Speaker 1: about it.
- 34:29Speaker 3: Definitely, Well, I'm so happy that we were gonna we
- 34:32Speaker 3: were able to catch up today. Before I let you go,
- 34:35Speaker 3: we're going to go through a flash question round.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Then I have a final question. Are you ready born?
- 34:43Speaker 2: Ready Born? Ready? Okay? Favorite movie of the year.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Oh man, Oh this is such a good question. I
- 34:52Speaker 1: haven't watched a lot of movies lately. We've got a
- 34:55Speaker 1: kick with all these like old school movies. Okay, So
- 34:58Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the big because we went
- 35:01Speaker 1: to New York, we saw Fao Schwartz, and we came
- 35:03Speaker 1: home and watched the movie with the kids. That's probably
- 35:05Speaker 1: the most recent movie I've seen. So kind of biased,
- 35:08Speaker 1: but yeah, that was good.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Favorite song of the year on your running playlist.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Oh that's so good. I had at the beginning of
- 35:16Speaker 1: the year at Houston. I had like four or five
- 35:19Speaker 1: songs on like repeat that I listened to all the time.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Let's see if I.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Live look at the room.
- 35:26Speaker 1: My gosh, I got to pick it up. I have
- 35:28Speaker 1: like the worst memory.
- 35:30Speaker 3: I have the song nice for What by Drake on
- 35:32Speaker 3: my marathon playlist five times, and whenever it comes on,
- 35:36Speaker 3: it's like my power song, like I have to like
- 35:39Speaker 3: get my act together.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Oh gosh, I love Okay, So my power song this
- 35:43Speaker 1: year was the Edge of Midnight by Miley Cyrus.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Wow.
- 35:48Speaker 1: That was like my power song this year because it's
- 35:51Speaker 1: like a like a Fleetwood Mac like remix song. Oh man,
- 35:54Speaker 1: that was good. So that was that was my twenty
- 35:56Speaker 1: twenty two song.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Miley Cyrus for the win. Do you have most memorable
- 36:01Speaker 3: meal of the year?
- 36:03Speaker 1: Okay, meal the year, which, unfortunately for my family I
- 36:07Speaker 1: made probably once a week, which eating that once a week,
- 36:09Speaker 1: that's like fifty times this year, just chicken and rice
- 36:12Speaker 1: all the time. My family is like, oh great, Mom
- 36:14Speaker 1: made chicken and rice again. But that's like you're serving
- 36:17Speaker 1: with a vegetable. Yeah, I'll put a vegetable in there.
- 36:19Speaker 1: The vegetable changes. Like if my kids are like, you know,
- 36:23Speaker 1: if they win, it's art chokes. That's like our favorite meal,
- 36:26Speaker 1: art chokes, chicken and rice. Oh I love that for you?
- 36:29Speaker 3: Okay. Can you reflect on perhaps a best piece of
- 36:34Speaker 3: advice that you were offered this year?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Hmmm.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I think one of the most eye opening conversations I had.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I was at the MIT Sloan Sports Conference this year
- 36:46Speaker 1: and one of my fellow presenters came up to me
- 36:48Speaker 1: afterwards and was like, Kira, you're happy and I was
- 36:51Speaker 1: like yeah, and he's like, no, you're like really happy.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And I was like yeah, and he's like, it's clear
- 36:57Speaker 1: that you have structure your life like your your goals
- 37:02Speaker 1: make you happy. So you've been successful, like you're not
- 37:05Speaker 1: chasing goals, you're chasing happiness. And I thought that was
- 37:08Speaker 1: I'd never looked at it that way, but it really
- 37:10Speaker 1: like opened my eyes that It's like when you're chasing
- 37:13Speaker 1: things that excite you and you're working hard to do
- 37:16Speaker 1: things that make you happy, you find even more success
- 37:20Speaker 1: than because I felt like in my Round one, I
- 37:22Speaker 1: was always like if I succeed, then I'll be happy.
- 37:26Speaker 1: And I just in that moment, I was like, oh
- 37:27Speaker 1: my gosh, I had it backwards for so long. I'm happy,
- 37:31Speaker 1: so I'm succeeding. And so I think just that just
- 37:36Speaker 1: really like rock my world a little bit kind of
- 37:38Speaker 1: looking at it like that. So that is going to be, Yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 1: chase goals that excite you.
- 37:43Speaker 3: What would you say the most exciting thing will be
- 37:48Speaker 3: that Kira will accomplish in twenty twenty three.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Oh man, Kia's going to go after it again. Kira
- 37:54Speaker 1: is going to go after it again. So I'm definitely
- 37:57Speaker 1: going to do a spring marathon. I'm not quite sure
- 38:00Speaker 1: yet which one, and I'm going to step myself up.
- 38:04Speaker 1: The Olympic Trials are in twenty twenty four, so I'm
- 38:06Speaker 1: going to get in some really great training to go
- 38:09Speaker 1: into that race as fit as possible. I currently am
- 38:12Speaker 1: not an Olympian, and I would like to be an Olympian.
- 38:15Speaker 1: So I think twenty twenty three is going to be
- 38:16Speaker 1: a really good setup for the twenty four trials and
- 38:21Speaker 1: how I'm going to go after it again, Man, going
- 38:22Speaker 1: to try to win some races and have some fun.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Last, but not least, favorite piece of gear that you
- 38:31Speaker 3: used in twenty twenty two?
- 38:34Speaker 1: Oh Man, Should I pick like my most frequent or
- 38:37Speaker 1: like because I have like a number of So I
- 38:40Speaker 1: think my favorite gear in races is either like my
- 38:45Speaker 1: Nike Alpha Fly shoes for marathony or my sunglasses, the
- 38:50Speaker 1: Nike Victory Elite sunglasses. When you wear sunglasses and you
- 38:55Speaker 1: race like, your race photos are like infinitely better because
- 38:59Speaker 1: they can't tell how far your soul is being crushed
- 39:03Speaker 1: in that moment. But then also it keeps all the
- 39:05Speaker 1: stuff out of your eyes, and you know how to swint,
- 39:07Speaker 1: So there's a lot of like really good reasons to
- 39:09Speaker 1: wear sunglasses. But I think this was like the year
- 39:11Speaker 1: of sunglasses for me. So I think then also, fanny pack.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I was huge into fanny packs in twenty twenty two,
- 39:20Speaker 1: and I don't regret that at all. But I have
- 39:22Speaker 1: an awesome Nike one. I've worn it with leather pants
- 39:25Speaker 1: like out, and then I've worn it with like running clothes.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I feel like it's so versatile. But yeah, fanny pack
- 39:31Speaker 1: for the wind too.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Whoever has Kira for a Secret Santa, you can buy
- 39:36Speaker 3: her like an upscale fanny pack.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Those exist. I thought you just like, no, Yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 1: they exist.
- 39:43Speaker 2: We're gonna have me. I'm on it. I'm gonna head
- 39:45Speaker 2: up Tony. I'm gonna let him know.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Yeah, let him know. That's a really good idea. Yeah,
- 39:49Speaker 1: I need I need to kind of give them some hints.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I want to open the floor to you.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Is there anything else that you want to make sure
- 39:56Speaker 3: you say about twenty twenty two before we officially turn
- 40:00Speaker 3: the page.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Oh man, that's a that's a big question. You are
- 40:06Speaker 1: awesome twenty twenty two. And let's even like raise a
- 40:10Speaker 1: roof even harder. In twenty twenty three, I guess it's
- 40:13Speaker 1: I don't know. It's just been fun seeing our world
- 40:15Speaker 1: get back from COVID and go back to some new
- 40:19Speaker 1: normal with everything that we learned in those like two
- 40:22Speaker 1: years and everything. And I think it's gonna be really
- 40:25Speaker 1: fun to see where everything goes. Like, I don't know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I just feel like the best is yet to come,
- 40:29Speaker 1: and I feel that way for like everybody. So I
- 40:31Speaker 1: feel really optimistic and excited going into twenty twenty three
- 40:34Speaker 1: and just ready to see what the future holds. How
- 40:37Speaker 1: about you, that's a big question. I'm gonna throw it
- 40:39Speaker 1: right back to you and put you on the spot.
- 40:42Speaker 3: What do I want to say to twenty twenty two
- 40:44Speaker 3: as I turn the page into twenty twenty three. Yeah,
- 40:48Speaker 3: I would say that I will not start twenty twenty
- 40:54Speaker 3: three navigating some of the like emotional hurdles that I
- 40:59Speaker 3: start to twenty twenty two with. I feel very satisfied
- 41:04Speaker 3: and content, like putting what I hope will be like
- 41:08Speaker 3: a chapter of depression behind me, and like really optimistic
- 41:12Speaker 3: going into twenty twenty three.
- 41:14Speaker 2: My word I asked you about, like your word?
- 41:17Speaker 3: My word not as good as buzzsaw, but is simply great.
- 41:23Speaker 3: My family motto has always been do good.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And what I.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Have realized over the last few weeks is, in a
- 41:31Speaker 3: few different aspects of my life, I've been so good
- 41:35Speaker 3: with good that I haven't chased great, and I'm ready
- 41:39Speaker 3: to be great. I'm ready to step into what great
- 41:43Speaker 3: could look like and get comfortable with the uncomfortable that
- 41:47Speaker 3: I know will come with great.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I think that's awesome because I think, like, when you
- 41:53Speaker 1: go for great, it almost doesn't matter if you hit
- 41:56Speaker 1: great or not. It's going for the great, which is
- 42:00Speaker 1: what is great? Am I talking in circles a little bit?
- 42:03Speaker 1: I think I did, but like following you, yeah, I
- 42:06Speaker 1: think that that is like, it's that's awesome, and just
- 42:08Speaker 1: striving for more and figuring out how to like just
- 42:12Speaker 1: do more for yourself, I think is I think it's great.
- 42:15Speaker 2: That's a great answer. It's a great answer. You know.
- 42:18Speaker 3: It made me think real quick about and I'm sure
- 42:20Speaker 3: maybe you felt this way in Houston. But it's like
- 42:24Speaker 3: when I be cute, and I never thought that I
- 42:27Speaker 3: would be cute. I wasn't even going after great, but
- 42:30Speaker 3: I found great by like chasing the best version of
- 42:34Speaker 3: myself on that day, and there is no better feeling
- 42:37Speaker 3: than surprising yourself with the greatness of your potential.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Oh gosh, I got the chills all over, got the chills.
- 42:44Speaker 1: That's perfect.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Okay, okay, final question here a piece of advice you
- 42:50Speaker 3: know how we do it here on hurdle that you
- 42:52Speaker 3: would offer yourself at the beginning of twenty twenty two.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Being that you are now twenty twenty three, kere, so,
- 43:00Speaker 3: knowing what you know now, what piece of advice would
- 43:03Speaker 3: you offer yourself back at the beginning of last year?
- 43:07Speaker 1: Keep doing you You're doing great, you know. And it's
- 43:10Speaker 1: funny because recently I've been thinking like about like I
- 43:14Speaker 1: don't know, maybe this is going to get a little weird,
- 43:16Speaker 1: but like just trusting in your past in future self,
- 43:21Speaker 1: you know, because I think when you overanalyze what's happened
- 43:25Speaker 1: in the past, it can lead towards like regret. And
- 43:29Speaker 1: if you're like overanalyzing what your future self is going
- 43:32Speaker 1: to go through, there's worry. So I think just trusting
- 43:36Speaker 1: in your past and future self and just knowing that
- 43:40Speaker 1: like that was a different Emily or that was a
- 43:42Speaker 1: different Kira, and they were doing the best with what
- 43:45Speaker 1: they had at the time for whatever reason, Like I've
- 43:47Speaker 1: been going through that mentality recently, and it's just it
- 43:50Speaker 1: puts me at peace because I'm like, I'm going to
- 43:52Speaker 1: do the best I can in any situation, and past
- 43:55Speaker 1: Kira did that and future here is going to do that.
- 43:57Speaker 1: So I don't know, this maybe just a little bit
- 43:59Speaker 1: out there, but that's something I've just been thinking about
- 44:01Speaker 1: lately that it's like it just brings me at peace,
- 44:03Speaker 1: just knowing like I'm doing the best I can. I
- 44:06Speaker 1: did in the past, I did in the future. But yeah,
- 44:09Speaker 1: that's a weird way to wrap up. I don't know
- 44:11Speaker 1: if any of that.
- 44:12Speaker 2: I would expect nothing less than you to.
- 44:16Speaker 1: You trust your past and future self. You know, we're
- 44:18Speaker 1: all on the same team here. That's the same.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Team, but you're a tomato.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Always a joy sitting down with you. I can't think
- 44:26Speaker 3: of a better way to start twenty twenty three. If
- 44:28Speaker 3: they don't yet, how do the hurdlers keep up with you?
- 44:31Speaker 3: How do they follow along with you? Give us your deats?
- 44:35Speaker 1: Yeah, look outside, I maybe running by their house right now.
- 44:38Speaker 1: I run a lot, but I'm on Instagram just Kira
- 44:42Speaker 1: a dematto, and then I'm on Strava, which is really fun.
- 44:45Speaker 1: If you like jokes, you should definitely follow me on
- 44:48Speaker 1: Strava because every day instead of just the normal run title,
- 44:52Speaker 1: I put a joke. So that's that's fun. And then
- 44:56Speaker 1: if you do carry your pigeons, just send them my house.
- 44:58Speaker 1: I can communicate that way and SMA signals. Maybe that's
- 45:00Speaker 1: what I'll work on in twenty twenty three is I'll
- 45:02Speaker 1: learn how to read smoke signals. So I'm really open
- 45:05Speaker 1: to communicating. You just let me know what works best
- 45:07Speaker 1: for you. Uh, you can be honest.
- 45:09Speaker 3: I saw that you and I follow the same pun
- 45:13Speaker 3: account on Twitter.
- 45:14Speaker 2: So are you ripping some of those puns for your Strava? Oh?
- 45:18Speaker 1: Absolutely, but I turn them a little bit, you know,
- 45:22Speaker 1: so they'll be like, they'll say something, I'm like, oh,
- 45:25Speaker 1: I can turn that into like a running joke. So
- 45:27Speaker 1: we'll say they're inspired. Some of them are, I guess directly,
- 45:30Speaker 1: but I get sourceded. I got inspiration from a lot
- 45:32Speaker 1: of different a lot of different sources. So oh yeah,
- 45:35Speaker 1: that's a good one too. I just Lexa tell me
- 45:38Speaker 1: a joke, and then she'll tell a joke, and sometimes
- 45:40Speaker 1: that stuals up, so mission I'm not that funny on
- 45:43Speaker 1: my own. I will put that out there. I need
- 45:44Speaker 1: a lot of help.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Oh man, I appreciate you.
- 45:48Speaker 3: I'm over at Hurdle Podcast at emily A Badi another
- 45:52Speaker 3: hurdle conquered.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Catch you guys, next time
- 46:01Speaker 4: To
