- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:54Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and stores, along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. In Lamentations,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Chapter three, verses twenty two and twenty three, we read,
- 1:16Speaker 1: because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed,
- 1:20Speaker 1: for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Great is your faithfulness. Now, if you miss a portion
- 1:27Speaker 1: of today's broadcast or would like to recommend it to
- 1:29Speaker 1: a friend, you can hear this program anytime online at
- 1:33Speaker 1: Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom
- 1:42Speaker 2: of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound
- 1:46Speaker 2: in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be
- 1:50Speaker 2: loose in Heaven.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Mat you.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Sixteen nineteen. We actually have a series which we began
- 2:02Speaker 2: and began to complete, which was called the Seven Keys
- 2:10Speaker 2: to Christian Living. We also found that within the description
- 2:16Speaker 2: there were key references that were used biblically for binding
- 2:24Speaker 2: and loosing. One of the aspects of this is pertinent
- 2:30Speaker 2: to Matthew sixteen nineteen, and continuing into the eighteenth chapter
- 2:40Speaker 2: of Matthew, we will find even more of an explanation
- 2:45Speaker 2: of the use of this particular key. Now we're going
- 2:54Speaker 2: to title this message, do you hold the key to
- 2:59Speaker 2: someone's forgiveness. Let's remember that Jesus presented Peter with the
- 3:06Speaker 2: keys to the Kingdom of God. We actually read that
- 3:11Speaker 2: in Matthew sixteen nineteen. Now it wasn't for Peter only,
- 3:17Speaker 2: but he presented it to Peter because he recognized he
- 3:20Speaker 2: was the Messiah. But then as this becomes more of
- 3:25Speaker 2: an application, there are experiences that take place, and one
- 3:33Speaker 2: of the things that takes place is how you use
- 3:39Speaker 2: this key of binding and loosing. Remember, one of the
- 3:44Speaker 2: things that we did to describe this as a x
- 3:48Speaker 2: key or extremely powerful key given by God, is that
- 3:55Speaker 2: this particular key is the one that had lock someone
- 4:03Speaker 2: or unlocked someone. And we're dealing with something that is
- 4:09Speaker 2: very very practical. If you take a key, put it
- 4:14Speaker 2: in a law, and that key fits the law, you
- 4:18Speaker 2: will be able to open it, and whatever that lock
- 4:22Speaker 2: has hold of will then be set free. So the
- 4:28Speaker 2: statement of binding and loosing has to do with locking
- 4:33Speaker 2: and unlocking, or another way of looking at it is
- 4:38Speaker 2: it has to do with setting captives free. Now, one
- 4:44Speaker 2: of the reasons why this is particularly important is because
- 4:49Speaker 2: Jesus proclaimed the very position of the anointing given to him,
- 4:58Speaker 2: because he said he was anointed to preach deliverance to
- 5:06Speaker 2: the captives, meaning he could loose them. So if he
- 5:13Speaker 2: provided the power to loose them, what was the power
- 5:19Speaker 2: that he used. In Matthew chapter eighteen, he explains the
- 5:27Speaker 2: use of the key, the key of forgiveness. There's a
- 5:35Speaker 2: parable that first is an answer to a question. The
- 5:41Speaker 2: question came from Peter sometime after he had been walking
- 5:49Speaker 2: and learning. Of course, as a follower of Jesus, he
- 5:55Speaker 2: was constantly asking questions about the Kingdom of God. What
- 6:03Speaker 2: would this mean? And he was given the understanding, if
- 6:13Speaker 2: you will, the application understanding of binding and loosing, As
- 6:21Speaker 2: we read in Matthew chapter eighteen, beginning with verse eighteen,
- 6:28Speaker 2: Jesus then says, once again, assuredly, I say to you,
- 6:34Speaker 2: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
- 6:38Speaker 2: and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Now,
- 6:42Speaker 2: when he made this statement Matthew sixteen nineteen was the
- 6:50Speaker 2: proclamation that the keys would be used for the same reason,
- 6:56Speaker 2: binding and loosing. Whatever you bind on earth will be
- 7:01Speaker 2: found in heaven. Whatever you loose on earth will be
- 7:04Speaker 2: loosed in heaven. In other words, you're in total agreement
- 7:08Speaker 2: with what Heaven prefers, and so in this particular case,
- 7:15Speaker 2: Peter asked the question following all of the teaching, he
- 7:22Speaker 2: asked the question in the twenty first verse. Beginning Peter
- 7:28Speaker 2: came to Jesus and he said, Lord, how often shall
- 7:33Speaker 2: my brother sin against me? And I forgive him up
- 7:38Speaker 2: to seven times? Now, this was Peter's means of being
- 7:44Speaker 2: able to find out what is the application of this
- 7:51Speaker 2: particular key. Jesus said to him following in verse twenty two,
- 7:57Speaker 2: I do not say to you up to seven times,
- 8:02Speaker 2: but up to seventy times seven. And then he begins
- 8:07Speaker 2: to tell him about how the Kingdom of Heaven functions. Now,
- 8:15Speaker 2: why is this important, Because what he's really doing here
- 8:19Speaker 2: is he is saying that this is the way it
- 8:23Speaker 2: should be done on earth. As the Kingdom of Heaven
- 8:29Speaker 2: is brought to earth. How is that done? We bind
- 8:35Speaker 2: or we lock something in this earth, it is already
- 8:44Speaker 2: locked in heaven. We unlock something on the earth, it
- 8:51Speaker 2: is already unlocked in heaven. So when Jesus said not
- 8:57Speaker 2: seven times, but seventy time seven, that was something they
- 9:03Speaker 2: had never heard before. Forgiveness of someone who wrongs you
- 9:10Speaker 2: and being able to say yes and turn the other cheek.
- 9:15Speaker 2: If he hit you or something of that hut one
- 9:18Speaker 2: time and then he hits you again. Second time you forgive,
- 9:24Speaker 2: he hits you again. The third time you forgive, he
- 9:28Speaker 2: hits you again. The fourth time you forgive, he hits
- 9:32Speaker 2: you again. Pretty Soon you can no longer reach a
- 9:39Speaker 2: point of forgiveness in your own capacity. You have to
- 9:45Speaker 2: have God's capacity to forgive. And so this is exactly
- 9:50Speaker 2: what He's giving in the use of the key. Let's
- 9:55Speaker 2: follow how the scripture defines what takes place. Therefore, the
- 10:01Speaker 2: Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king who wanted
- 10:06Speaker 2: to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had
- 10:10Speaker 2: begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who
- 10:15Speaker 2: owed him ten thousand talents, But as he was not
- 10:20Speaker 2: able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold
- 10:25Speaker 2: with his wife and children and all that he had,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and that payment be made. The servant therefore fell down
- 10:34Speaker 2: before him, saying, Master, have patience with me, and I
- 10:42Speaker 2: will pay you all. Then the master of that servant
- 10:47Speaker 2: was moved with compassion, released him and forgave him the debt.
- 10:54Speaker 2: But the servant went out and found one of his
- 10:58Speaker 2: fellow servants who owed him one hundred denari, and he
- 11:05Speaker 2: laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying,
- 11:10Speaker 2: pay me what you owe. So his fellow servant fell
- 11:15Speaker 2: down at his feet begged him, saying, have patience with me,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and I will pay you all. And he would not,
- 11:25Speaker 2: but went and threw him into prison till he should
- 11:29Speaker 2: pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what
- 11:33Speaker 2: he had done, they were very grief and came and
- 11:38Speaker 2: told their master all that had been done. When his master,
- 11:43Speaker 2: after he had called him, said to him, you, wicked servant,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant,
- 11:59Speaker 2: just as I had pity on you, and his master
- 12:04Speaker 2: was angry and delivered him to the tortures until he
- 12:09Speaker 2: should pay all that was due him. The thirty fifth
- 12:15Speaker 2: verse is no longer a parable. This is a command.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Jesus states clearly here. So, my heavenly father also will
- 12:31Speaker 2: do to you, if each of you, from his heart
- 12:37Speaker 2: does not forgive his brother his trespasses. What we have
- 12:43Speaker 2: just read is both the use of a key and
- 12:50Speaker 2: the abuse of the key. The key can loose someone
- 12:58Speaker 2: who is bound in sin, or it can puld them
- 13:06Speaker 2: in the same position. Why do we know that that
- 13:13Speaker 2: is true, because that is the very charge that was
- 13:20Speaker 2: laid on our lord. He claimed that he had the
- 13:28Speaker 2: power to forgive sin. So if Jesus is giving believers
- 13:36Speaker 2: the authority to forgive sin, it is for the same
- 13:42Speaker 2: reason that the leaders of the known religious world would
- 13:49Speaker 2: raise the same charge against us. Why, because he gave
- 13:58Speaker 2: us the power to release those lots in sin. Whatever
- 14:06Speaker 2: you bind on earth will be loose. Whatever you bind
- 14:10Speaker 2: on earth will be bound in heaven. Whatever you loose
- 14:15Speaker 2: on earth will be loosed in heaven. Now, in another
- 14:20Speaker 2: chapter he makes this statement very clear. He says, Jesus
- 14:29Speaker 2: said to his followers, and this is after his resurrection,
- 14:36Speaker 2: he appears to them, He breathes on them. He says
- 14:41Speaker 2: to them, whoever sin you have to release, they are released.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Whoever sin you forgive, they are forgiven. But whoever sin
- 15:00Speaker 2: you retain, you can keep them held in bondage by
- 15:07Speaker 2: not forgiving them. If you retain their sins, their sins
- 15:12Speaker 2: are retained. What does that mean? This particular parable describes
- 15:21Speaker 2: the function. We owe a debt for our sin that
- 15:27Speaker 2: is so great we cannot pay it. God is moved
- 15:32Speaker 2: with compassion. He places his own son on the cross
- 15:39Speaker 2: at Calgary. His blood pours out as redemption, repurchasing us
- 15:50Speaker 2: for what sin had brought in our life. And because
- 15:57Speaker 2: of that, he is able to confer the same power
- 16:03Speaker 2: to us. He has the power to forgive sin. He
- 16:09Speaker 2: gives his followers power to forgive sin. People need to
- 16:17Speaker 2: understand that is not a toy. That is one of
- 16:22Speaker 2: the most powerful keys you could ever use in the kingdom.
- 16:30Speaker 2: How do we use it? I forgive him.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 16:38Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to

- 16:53Speaker 1: Faithfulness from the America's twenty five Favorite Hymns album. Unless otherwise,
- 16:59Speaker 1: express are read from the Holman Christian Standard Bible, which
- 17:03Speaker 1: is published by Homan Bible Publishers in Nashville, Tennessee. Additional
- 17:08Speaker 1: resources used for reflections on the Word with Richard K
- 17:11Speaker 1: include Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Our Daily Bread and
- 17:15Speaker 1: printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again, here is Richard to
- 17:19Speaker 1: wrap up today's message.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Do we have a right to hold someone in unforgiveness?
- 17:26Speaker 2: Absolutely not. If Jesus could pray from the cross, Father,
- 17:31Speaker 2: forgive them, for they know not what they do. We
- 17:37Speaker 2: have to be the same. This was noted. Stephen, who
- 17:44Speaker 2: was an early follower of Jesus, was proclaiming the gospel
- 17:51Speaker 2: and he was stoned to death. While he was being stoned,
- 17:58Speaker 2: Saul of Tarsus was next to him in the craft.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He witnessed the stoning. In fact, he probably participated in
- 18:10Speaker 2: the stoning. And what did Stephen proclaim? The same message?
- 18:19Speaker 2: He said, Father, forgive them, well, they know not what
- 18:28Speaker 2: they do. The key to forgiveness. Can hold somebody in sin,
- 18:36Speaker 2: locked in sin because of unforgiveness, but by forgiving we
- 18:42Speaker 2: can release them so they can become followers and children
- 18:49Speaker 2: of God. We can continue the great commission going forward
- 18:59Speaker 2: preaching the good news that God has forgiven our sins,
- 19:07Speaker 2: and we proclaim it and set people free. We have
- 19:14Speaker 2: no right to hold someone in unforgiveness, no matter what
- 19:22Speaker 2: they may have done. Jesus forgave all our sin. We
- 19:29Speaker 2: must do the same. The thirty fifth verse of the
- 19:35Speaker 2: eighteenth chapter of Matthew says soberingly, so my heavenly Father
- 19:43Speaker 2: also will do to you if each of you, from
- 19:47Speaker 2: his heart does not forgive his brother his trespasses. That
- 19:56Speaker 2: is today's Reflection on the World.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 20:04Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
