- 0:00Speaker 1: Les Crutchfield wrote this February 24th, 1957 broadcast of Gunsmoke,
- 0:06Speaker 1: directed and produced by Norman MacDonald. In episode 255, Impact,
- 0:13Speaker 1: William Conrad returns as Marshal Matt Dillon, with Howard McNair,
- 0:18Speaker 1: Parley Bear, Ben Wright, and Virginia Gregg in the cast.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Dylan investigates a series of accidents at the ranch of
- 0:26Speaker 1: elderly Miss Larkin, where her new hired hand, Lonnie Welsh,
- 0:31Speaker 1: has grown close to her and may benefit from her
- 0:34Speaker 1: plans for the property. As the marshal weighs concern for
- 0:38Speaker 1: Miss Larkin against the possibility that suspicion has gone too far,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the case carries him beyond Dodge City to her ranch.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Smoke.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 1:08Speaker 3: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:11Speaker 3: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:14Speaker 3: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:38Speaker 3: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:41Speaker 3: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:48Speaker 2: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And a little lonely.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Doc, she'll hear you, Mr.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 2:23Speaker 6: That's his buggy. Yeah, he's here.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It's a good thing, too.
- 2:28Speaker 6: Sure do hope she ain't bad hurt.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So do I, Chester.
- 2:33Speaker 6: That you, Matt?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Doc.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Screens unhooked.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Come on into the bedroom. All right.
- 2:42Speaker 6: In here, Matt.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Ah, good.
- 2:46Speaker 5: See if you can talk some sense into this cantankerous
- 2:49Speaker 5: old lady.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh, I've known her for some years, and I've never
- 2:53Speaker 2: been able to yet. How do you feel, Miss Larkin?
- 2:55Speaker 8: Good enough to get up and get on with my chores,
- 2:58Speaker 8: but this broken-winded old veterinary claims I gotta.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Stay in bed for a week.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Oh, Doc's right sometimes. It's but a law of average.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Oh, Mrs.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Larkin, that's good. What have you been up to, Miss Larkin?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Going in for a bulldog and steers at your age?
- 3:11Speaker 5: Oh, just a piddling.
- 3:12Speaker 6: Little old accident.
- 3:13Speaker 8: And the way you and Doc and Chester come running
- 3:16Speaker 8: out here, you'd think you was all in my will.
- 3:18Speaker 6: You mean we ain't in it, ma'am? Chester, it wouldn't do.
- 3:21Speaker 7: You no good if you was.
- 3:23Speaker 6: I ain't going no place.
- 3:25Speaker 7: I've got another good 20 years in me yet.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Well, if you go around Roswell and steers, you haven't.
- 3:30Speaker 2: How'd it happen?
- 3:32Speaker 8: Oh, that confounded breeding bull I bought last fall.
- 3:36Speaker 7: He's leaner than an acre of snakes. Charges anything that moves.
- 3:40Speaker 7: Can't even turn him onto the range. I have to
- 3:42Speaker 7: keep him in a special built corral.
- 3:44Speaker 5: That was a darn fool thing to do, getting him
- 3:46Speaker 5: there at all. I got about.
- 3:47Speaker 8: Halfway across corral when that dad-blamed critter tossed.
- 3:50Speaker 5: His head and jerked his nose ring out of the hook.
- 3:53Speaker 7: He saw me moving, so he come for me. Lonnie'd
- 3:56Speaker 7: been wearing his gun. He'd have shot him.
- 3:58Speaker 5: And thank the Lord he wasn't.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I got a lot of money tied up in that bull.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Your life ought to be worth a little something, you know.
- 4:05Speaker 7: Well, I still got it.
- 4:07Speaker 8: I made the fence before he hit me, and then
- 4:09Speaker 8: he missed me with the horn.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Just butted me some before I.
- 4:12Speaker 7: Could reach the top rail and haul up out of
- 4:14Speaker 7: the way. I'll be as good as new.
- 4:17Speaker 5: This time tomorrow.
- 4:18Speaker 7: Good as new?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Good as new.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Good as new.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Any time an old wagon wheel hits a rock, Mrs. Larkin,
- 4:24Speaker 5: it always leaves at least some of the spokes loose.
- 4:27Speaker 7: You speak for yourself, you old billy goat. You're just
- 4:29Speaker 7: itching to make.
- 4:30Speaker 5: A profit off my infirmity.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, then at least you admit that you're hurt, Mrs. Larkin.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I'll lift.
- 4:34Speaker 5: To bury this old weasel.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Old?
- 4:37Speaker 5: You're talking to a man in his prime.
- 4:39Speaker 8: Oh, prime.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Well, I'm going to fetch some liniment out of the buggy. Now,
- 4:43Speaker 5: don't you wallow around and loosen those bandages. You've got
- 4:47Speaker 5: a busted rib, young lady.
- 4:48Speaker 8: It's cracked some, maybe, but it ain't busted.
- 4:53Speaker 7: Oh, he's a good doctor. Couldn't have found him. But
- 4:55Speaker 7: I sure enjoy plaguing him.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Oh, Doc does some of that himself, Miss Larkin. Uh,
- 5:02Speaker 2: tell me, how have things been going around the place? Oh,
- 5:05Speaker 2: they couldn't be.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Better, Marshal.
- 5:07Speaker 8: Except for this morning, of course, and that other little
- 5:09Speaker 8: accident a couple weeks ago.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Oh, what other accident?
- 5:12Speaker 7: Oh, a saddle just broke on me and I got
- 5:14Speaker 7: sold up in the North Meadow. Oh?
- 5:17Speaker 5: Wasn't nothing really.
- 5:18Speaker 7: Well, it turned out I let on the feet, as usual.
- 5:21Speaker 8: I'm pretty spry for an old woman.
- 5:23Speaker 2: You're pretty lucky, too.
- 5:26Speaker 7: I am lucky, Marshal. Things seem to work out for
- 5:29Speaker 7: me like Lonnie Wells riding in here and asking for
- 5:33Speaker 7: a job. The day he come, I was just about
- 5:37Speaker 7: at the.
- 5:37Speaker 9: End of my rope.
- 5:39Speaker 2: How long has Lonnie been with you now?
- 5:44Speaker 9: Five and a half months.
- 5:46Speaker 7: And he's made it seem like a different world. After
- 5:49Speaker 7: Ed died, I could go on because I still had
- 5:53Speaker 7: my son, but.
- 5:55Speaker 7: Three years ago, you remember, he was took from me, too.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember.
- 6:01Speaker 7: That little Dan, I just didn't have no heart to
- 6:04Speaker 7: go on living. Then Lonnie come. He straighter took his place.
- 6:10Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Miss Larkin, where'd Lonnie come from?
- 6:16Speaker 7: Oh, Texas, somewhere.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 6:18Speaker 9: Oh, he's a fine boy, Marshal.
- 6:20Speaker 7: Just aged little Dan has been. Oh, he's... Like another
- 6:24Speaker 7: son to me. Just a hard hand.
- 6:31Speaker 9: Ms.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Larkin, you sure you're feeling all right?
- 6:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 7: I reckon I'm shook up more than I knew.
- 6:40Speaker 8: Marshal, there's hot water on the stove.
- 6:42Speaker 7: A box of tea on the shelf.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Oh, I'll fix you some. No, you just lie back
- 6:46Speaker 2: there and take it easy. I'll give you a hand.
- 6:49Speaker 7: I'm much obliged to you both.
- 6:55Speaker 2: You still have the same mind, Mr.
- 6:57Speaker 9: Dillon?
- 6:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Well, young Lonnie Welch is a shifty-eyed cuss if there
- 7:04Speaker 5: ever was one.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's worse than just being shifty-eyed, Chester.
- 7:12Speaker 9: Matt.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 9: I want something real bad.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Sure, lots of time. What do you want?
- 7:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 2: That's the crazy part.
- 7:23Speaker 9: I don't even know.
- 7:24Speaker 2: No?
- 7:25Speaker 9: Just something. Something I don't have, I guess.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Couldn't be a spring fever.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Could it?
- 7:32Speaker 8: It might.
- 7:33Speaker 9: Except I felt the same way in the fall. Uh,
- 7:37Speaker 9: sometimes I think it's this country out here, Matt.
- 7:40Speaker 5: The prairie.
- 7:41Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 7:43Speaker 9: It's just a darn big fancy. You know what I mean?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 7:50Speaker 9: You feel so alone. Like something's lacking in you. So
- 7:54Speaker 9: you try to fit things in. Things of people or something.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 8:03Speaker 2: In fact, I know an old woman who's doing that
- 8:04Speaker 2: right now. She's trying to find a substitute for her
- 8:08Speaker 2: dead son.
- 8:09Speaker 6: Who's that?
- 8:10Speaker 2: Liz Larkin, out west of town.
- 8:14Speaker 9: Oh, with Lonnie Welch, you mean. He's sitting over there
- 8:18Speaker 9: in that poker game right now.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been watching him. He throws money around pretty
- 8:23Speaker 2: free for a hired ranch hand, doesn't he?
- 8:26Speaker 9: The way I hear it, she gives him all the
- 8:27Speaker 9: money he wants.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but maybe not as fast as he wants.
- 8:31Speaker 9: What do you mean, Matt?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Well, early last month, Mr. Bodkin over at the bank
- 8:36Speaker 2: came and told me that Ms. Larkin had been in
- 8:38Speaker 2: and made a will. She's leaving everything she's got to Lonnie.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I felt the same way. Even more so after
- 8:48Speaker 2: she'd had a couple of close calls. Accidents, supposedly.
- 8:53Speaker 9: Well, Matt, something ought to be done.
- 8:55Speaker 2: You can't hang a man on a hunch, especially when
- 8:58Speaker 2: he hasn't done it yet.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Yeah, but there's got to be something.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Well, I've been figuring on talking to him. In fact,
- 9:04Speaker 2: I think I'll do it right now.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I'll see you a little later, Kitty.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Yeah, sure, Matt.
- 9:12Speaker 10: A man's luck can't run bad forever.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I reckon I'll stay in and raise another five. You
- 9:18Speaker 2: mind holding up this hand for a couple of minutes, boys?
- 9:21Speaker 6: What's up, Marcus?
- 9:22Speaker 10: What's the trouble, Marcus? Poker against the law now in Dodge?
- 9:26Speaker 2: No. I just wanted to talk to you for a minute, honey.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You asking? Or ordering? Come on, let's take a walk, huh? Sure,
- 9:36Speaker 2: why not?
- 9:37Speaker 10: A man's a mind for talk, I'll oblige him. Just
- 9:41Speaker 10: leave everything laid, gents, right there on the table. Getting
- 9:47Speaker 10: this kind of personal attention is liable to flatter a
- 9:50Speaker 10: man some, Marshal.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 9:53Speaker 10: We're right handy.
- 9:54Speaker 2: To the bar.
- 9:55Speaker 10: I'll be glad to buy you a drink.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Lonnie, where did you come from before? you hit Dutch? Oh,
- 10:02Speaker 2: here and there.
- 10:04Speaker 7: Why?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Ever been to Virginia City? Not as far as I recollect.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I think you better think again. I put out some
- 10:12Speaker 2: bulletins a while back, and the only answer I got's
- 10:14Speaker 2: from Virginia City.
- 10:16Speaker 6: Is that so?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Seems you were working a silver claim with a partner
- 10:20Speaker 2: named Pete Ryder. Until he turned up murdered one day.
- 10:24Speaker 10: They must have mentioned something about the jury acquitting me
- 10:28Speaker 10: on that, didn't they?
- 10:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Lack of evidence.
- 10:32Speaker 10: Well, in that case, I reckon I'll... Just a minute.
- 10:35Speaker 10: You got something else in mind?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I have. I want you to know that I'd
- 10:41Speaker 2: figure it was real suspicious if... Mrs. Larkin was to
- 10:45Speaker 2: die suddenly by accident. Like yesterday with that bull.
- 10:52Speaker 10: Now, look, that bull's a born killer, Marshal. You don't
- 10:55Speaker 10: think I trained him, do you?
- 10:57Speaker 2: No, I think you let Mrs. Larkin go out in
- 10:59Speaker 2: the middle of the corral and then turned him loose.
- 11:02Speaker 10: And you told Mrs.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Larkin that, too, didn't you? I did.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Yeah, she told me. And she also told me she
- 11:08Speaker 6: ordered you off the place.
- 11:09Speaker 2: She wouldn't listen to such things. Lonnie... If anything happens
- 11:13Speaker 2: to her, I'll get you for it. So help me
- 11:16Speaker 2: if it takes me the rest of my life.
- 11:18Speaker 10: I'll see you around, Marshal. I got a pat hand
- 11:23Speaker 10: in this game.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You better have, mister. Because you're betting your life on it.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Doggone it, Matt.
- 11:37Speaker 5: There's just no sense to the way you play checkers.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Why do you say that, Doc?
- 11:41Speaker 5: Well, you make some of the goddarnest moves I've ever... Well,
- 11:43Speaker 5: you're worse than Chester.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Huh?
- 11:45Speaker 5: Only time you beat me is when I let you
- 11:47Speaker 5: do it, Doc. Well, then you're mighty generous-natured. Look what
- 11:52Speaker 5: you've done there. Look what you've done there. You left
- 11:53Speaker 5: one of your men just sitting there.
- 11:55Speaker 6: You see that?
- 11:55Speaker 5: Waiting for me to take it. So, you see?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I see. Well, there. All right, take another one, Doc.
- 12:08Speaker 6: Well, if you want to give me the game. Okay, Doc.
- 12:18Speaker 5: That's three of you men, Doc.
- 12:24Speaker 2: That puts you down one in the way I'm figuring.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You're a beast.
- 12:28Speaker 6: You're a gender changer, too, ain't you, Doc?
- 12:31Speaker 5: Oh, sure, that's how you do it, yeah. You keep
- 12:32Speaker 5: Chester talking like that so as to get my mind
- 12:34Speaker 5: off the game.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That's right, Doc.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Yeah, you've got a mighty sneaky way of playing, if
- 12:38Speaker 5: you ask me. Me, too.
- 12:39Speaker 6: Good evening, gentlemen.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Oh, how are you, Miles?
- 12:43Speaker 6: Am I breaking in on anything important?
- 12:45Speaker 2: No, no, come on in.
- 12:47Speaker 6: I can't stay. I just wanted some information, Matthew.
- 12:50Speaker 2: No?
- 12:51Speaker 6: I thought you might be able to help me.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Information about what?
- 12:55Speaker 5: At Mrs.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Larkin's place out west of town. What do you figure
- 12:59Speaker 6: it's worth?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Oh, it's kind of hard to say. It's a good ranch,
- 13:03Speaker 2: all right.
- 13:04Speaker 6: Aye, that's what I was thinking. And, well, if a
- 13:07Speaker 6: man could buy it cheap.
- 13:09Speaker 2: What do you mean, if a man could buy it cheap?
- 13:13Speaker 6: Well, I heard it might be on the market before
- 13:15Speaker 6: the end of the week.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Who told you that?
- 13:18Speaker 6: Well, a young fellow that works for Mrs. Larkin. He
- 13:22Speaker 6: let it slip this afternoon. Oh, he'd been drinking kind
- 13:25Speaker 6: of heavy, I suppose. Otherwise, he wouldn't have.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Do you know where he is now?
- 13:28Speaker 6: Aye, well, somebody was saying he couldn't even make it
- 13:31Speaker 6: back out to the ranch. He took a room at
- 13:33Speaker 6: the Dodge House for the night.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Chester, come on.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Yes, sir. You think that I ought to make an
- 13:38Speaker 6: offer for the place, Matthew? No, I wouldn't bother, Miles.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Not just yet, anyway.
- 14:01Speaker 5: My, he sure is dead to the world, Mr.
- 14:04Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Blind drunk, the clerk said. Didn't want to be disturbed
- 14:11Speaker 6: before noon tomorrow.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Well, he's gonna be disturbed. Give me that passkey, Chester.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Here you are.
- 14:16Speaker 6: Thanks. I bet he's gonna be mad in a wet
- 14:19Speaker 6: hand being drug out of bed this way.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll bet he is. Uh, see if you can
- 14:26Speaker 2: find the lamp and get the list, huh? Yeah, sure, sir.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Might be over here on the bureau office. How's she doing?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Oh, he ain't here. No, that bed hasn't even been
- 14:41Speaker 2: slept in.
- 14:42Speaker 6: And the window's standing wide open. He could have went
- 14:44Speaker 6: out of it.
- 14:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Well, he's got a good start on us, Chester. Come on,
- 14:48Speaker 2: let's get moving.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Come on.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Look yonder, Mr.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 15:04Speaker 6: There's a fire at the corner of the house.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's against the wall of the bedroom, Chester. Come on.
- 15:10Speaker 6: Somebody's there.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Either help me or I'll put it out.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Trying to put it out, Chester.
- 15:15Speaker 8: That's Ms.
- 15:15Speaker 9: Larkin.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Well, then, Lonnie, he's been here yet, huh?
- 15:18Speaker 2: I wouldn't bet on that. There are a couple of
- 15:23Speaker 2: buckets at the water trough there, Chester.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Let's give her a hand.
- 15:25Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Mr.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Larkin?
- 15:29Speaker 2: Be right with you, Ms. Larkin. All right, you ready, Chester?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 15:41Speaker 6: It don't look near as bad as I thought at first.
- 15:43Speaker 2: She's about got it put out, I think.
- 15:44Speaker 6: A little water here against the wall.
- 15:47Speaker 7: Ought to do it.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Right.
- 15:50Speaker 2: All right, throw the other bucket in the same place, Chester.
- 15:52Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 15:58Speaker 8: Looks like that ditch about does it. Blue's touching gold
- 16:01Speaker 8: there for a while.
- 16:03Speaker 2: We'd better watch it for a few minutes. Those embers
- 16:05Speaker 2: might flare up again.
- 16:06Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 16:08Speaker 7: That didn't do too much harm, looks like. Burned the
- 16:11Speaker 7: outside wall some.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Yeah, it was mostly just trash burning. All piled up
- 16:16Speaker 6: again in the house that way.
- 16:17Speaker 2: What's the matter, Jesse?
- 16:21Speaker 5: Mr.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Dillon, do you smell coal oil? Yeah, I do.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Ms.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Larkin, did Lonnie start this?
- 16:30Speaker 5: How'd you know?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Well, he made a big show of spending the night
- 16:33Speaker 2: in town. We went over to the Dodge house and
- 16:35Speaker 2: he wasn't in his room.
- 16:38Speaker 7: I don't know what it was woke me.
- 16:41Speaker 6: But I looked out the.
- 16:42Speaker 7: Window and there he was. He'd piled brush against the
- 16:46Speaker 7: wall and was just sitting far to it. Aimed for
- 16:50Speaker 7: me to die right in my bed.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Russell, I guess I.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Owe you an apology. You was right.
