Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm notcome to stuff. Never told you production by Heart
- 0:09Speaker 2: Radio and welcome to another classic. This is one I
- 0:19Speaker 2: had on my mind because of you, Samantha. You asked
- 0:25Speaker 2: me after viewing a recent movie, if this is what
- 0:29Speaker 2: fan fiction is like, and I said, you know, sometimes,
- 0:34Speaker 2: but it reminded me of a past episode we did
- 0:38Speaker 2: called my fan fiction is better than Yours, and it
- 0:41Speaker 2: was about how I feel like there's a lot of
- 0:44Speaker 2: fan fiction that is better than what I feel like
- 0:48Speaker 2: is essentially franchised, sanctioned fan fiction. But I will say
- 0:54Speaker 2: about this episode, I didn't know how much worse things
- 0:59Speaker 2: were going to get for me in certain terms, in
- 1:04Speaker 2: terms of cannon in some cases, and then also in
- 1:07Speaker 2: terms of other properties, not just Star Wars. So it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: just funny to me because I do feel like without
- 1:16Speaker 2: the constraints of studios sometimes that picture it really is better.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It really is, yes.
- 1:26Speaker 2: But your mileage may vary, you might have different thoughts,
- 1:30Speaker 2: but please enjoy this classic episode.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha and welcome to Stephane.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Never told your production of iHeartRadio and welcome to another
- 1:52Speaker 1: Happy Hour.
- 1:53Speaker 2: We are actually recording this one at happy hour time
- 1:56Speaker 2: on Friday. We are yeah, so cheers to that huge Friday.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yes, oh so excited.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Also, as always, drink responsibly if you choose to do
- 2:08Speaker 2: so before we get into this one.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Here a rare happy hour disclaimer.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I am being self indulgent and I am being a
- 2:16Speaker 2: bit salty, and we are focusing largely on the fanboy
- 2:21Speaker 2: aspects of toxic fandom. But I want to acknowledge her.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I absolutely know there are toxic fangirls and they have
- 2:29Speaker 2: bullied creators, and they have bullied people offline. I had
- 2:32Speaker 2: a friend who was She left her job because of
- 2:36Speaker 2: some really intense railo fans Kyler, Rinn and Ray from
- 2:40Speaker 2: Star Wars. So we should definitely come back and talk
- 2:43Speaker 2: about that again. I know we've talked about it in
- 2:45Speaker 2: a few past episodes, but for this one in particular,
- 2:49Speaker 2: kind of focusing on the fanboy aspect of toxic fandom.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And I also want to say, well, this might sound
- 2:58Speaker 2: like a hip bee's certain male Star Wars creaders.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's not. It's absolutely not. I promise you it's not.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And also I want to say I thought about this,
- 3:08Speaker 2: like perhaps way too much, but I was thinking about
- 3:13Speaker 2: kind of Star Wars books when I was younger and
- 3:17Speaker 2: you know, sort of early fan fiction if you will,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and those weren't you know, people did make fun of
- 3:23Speaker 2: them in culture at large and mediat large. They were
- 3:27Speaker 2: popular among Star Wars fans, but it was sort of
- 3:31Speaker 2: still kind of mocked at the time. And now that
- 3:34Speaker 2: things like the Mandalorian have made Star Wars or you know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: things like that of made nerdiness more mainstream, I don't
- 3:42Speaker 2: think there is mocked anymore.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But that was a thing that happened.
- 3:47Speaker 2: However, I would still say it was mostly men getting
- 3:50Speaker 2: their work published, and I would still say that these
- 3:55Speaker 2: Star Wars books were held in higher regard than women
- 3:59Speaker 2: writing fan fiction. I think that this is changing. But anyway,
- 4:06Speaker 2: there are going to be some spoilers. They're gonna be
- 4:08Speaker 2: very light, like I hesitate to even call them spoilers,
- 4:10Speaker 2: but it's one of those things where I think if
- 4:12Speaker 2: you thought about it, you could figure out what I'm
- 4:14Speaker 2: talking about, which means that Samantha is going to be
- 4:17Speaker 2: very kind and just listen to me vent a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 2: And that I would also like to thank my friends,
- 4:25Speaker 2: the Katies, the two kds that I have in my
- 4:28Speaker 2: life that are very close to for letting me have
- 4:31Speaker 2: a very intense text exchange to get my feelings out.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But anyway, all right, a lot of the things I'm
- 4:38Speaker 2: discussing are matters of opinion and interpretation. I get that,
- 4:42Speaker 2: even if it sounds like I don't. As I said,
- 4:44Speaker 2: this is going to be very self indulgent. But Samantha,
- 4:48Speaker 2: what are you sipping on?
- 4:51Speaker 3: I am keeping it light with my what is called
- 4:55Speaker 3: light sky blue move, mainly because I just want to
- 5:00Speaker 3: sip on something that it's not too heavy. And yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 3: sometimes beer makes me super sleepy, and I'm just saying,
- 5:06Speaker 3: like the obviously the higher alcohol content, but like IPA's
- 5:10Speaker 3: and any of the craft independent that I do love
- 5:13Speaker 3: makes me sleepy.
- 5:13Speaker 4: So I feel like I need to.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Be aware for this conversation, just for you. So I'm
- 5:18Speaker 3: slipping on just a generic beer.
- 5:21Speaker 4: What about you?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Okay, Well, that's actually that's perfect because we are I
- 5:24Speaker 2: didn't even specify what spoilers you might have to worry about.
- 5:27Speaker 2: We're talking about Scream and Star Wars. Oh okay, book
- 5:30Speaker 2: a fat stuff in here, and you know the the
- 5:35Speaker 2: blue sky blue moon.
- 5:36Speaker 1: There's an indoor moon.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Star Wars parody of that beer, So you're you're right
- 5:42Speaker 2: right in in.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I was gonna say in fashion that's not correct.
- 5:47Speaker 2: But I am sipping on what is essentially a Gin
- 5:51Speaker 2: and Tonic, but spicy because I'm feeling very spicy for
- 5:55Speaker 2: this episode. I just put some hot sauce in there,
- 5:59Speaker 2: and it's actually really good. It's kind a nice kick.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Mm hmmm, I like it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, So all right, let's get into this because
- 6:06Speaker 2: I got to have to say a lot of franchises
- 6:10Speaker 2: are getting rebooted or are they have new entries that
- 6:13Speaker 2: are coming out right now, And we've talked about a
- 6:15Speaker 2: lot of them, including and just like that recently The
- 6:17Speaker 2: Sex and the City.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It's a reboot is not necessarily correct.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But yeah, continuing story, the continuing story, Thank you the Matrix.
- 6:27Speaker 2: We did a whole feminist movie Friday on that We've
- 6:30Speaker 2: mentioned Halloween, Scream and of course Star Wars all the
- 6:35Speaker 2: time Star Wars, and something I've found interesting is that
- 6:39Speaker 2: a lot of them seem to address fans and how
- 6:43Speaker 2: fans perceive them or how fans have influenced these franchises
- 6:49Speaker 2: or toxic fans, and they almost have like a wink
- 6:52Speaker 2: wink thing going on about moving on from legacy characters
- 6:56Speaker 2: or holding on too tightly to how you think a
- 6:58Speaker 2: character should be, and how these characters are never going
- 7:01Speaker 2: to be happy as long as we keep bringing them back.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And trust me, I feel so sad for my fictional.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Characters that I love.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'm like, I want to see this movie, but I
- 7:14Speaker 2: want you to be happy, and I know the two can't.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Coexist, and they can never coexist.
- 7:20Speaker 1: No, not if we're going to keep making this type
- 7:23Speaker 1: of movie.
- 7:24Speaker 2: In this case, I'm talking about Scream, and I have
- 7:26Speaker 2: a fan fiction i'm writing right now, and I kid
- 7:29Speaker 2: you not, I'm at the I know how the story goes,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I'm at the precipice of it going all wrong. I
- 7:37Speaker 2: can't write it, Samantha. I feel too guilty. I'm like,
- 7:41Speaker 2: I can't do this to you.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, the tragedy is just too much tragedy.
- 7:46Speaker 1: It's too much like I want you to be happy.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So I've actually skipped the traumatic part and I've started
- 7:53Speaker 2: writing that healing from the traumatic part.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I mean, that's not a bad thing.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think I could work. I think that's fun, but
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's fine.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I never used to have that problem before, but now
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'm like I cannot write, I cannot.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Do this to you, but I still have it hanging there.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Like Also, I want to say I learned some new
- 8:15Speaker 2: fandom terms. And this is from TV trips dot com
- 8:19Speaker 2: quote when a creator answers a question about their work,
- 8:22Speaker 2: should they provide an in universe answer our real life answer?
- 8:26Speaker 2: The former is the Watsonian perspective, the latter doyalist.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Oh as in like Watson and Doyle's the writer. Okay,
- 8:35Speaker 4: I get it.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I guess yes, Okay, yes, I bring this up because
- 8:39Speaker 2: that's been some criticism of specifically Book of Boba.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Fett is Like.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I get I being like a lot of fans get
- 8:50Speaker 2: why you have to make these decisions based on budget
- 8:52Speaker 2: or technology or yeah, just basically plot stuff, but you
- 8:57Speaker 2: didn't explain it in universe like I get your real
- 8:59Speaker 2: life limitations, which you were kind of just like okay,
- 9:04Speaker 2: and you didn't really give it an answer. So it's
- 9:08Speaker 2: I had never heard of that before, but I was like, yes,
- 9:10Speaker 2: that's because all the time you're thinking about like, oh,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I wonder why the couldn't do this. I bet they
- 9:14Speaker 2: didn't have the money or something like that. So they
- 9:16Speaker 2: are those terms, And yes, of course, I want to
- 9:33Speaker 2: talk about an fiction. We look down upon fan fiction
- 9:37Speaker 2: when women in non binary folks write it, but we
- 9:40Speaker 2: load it and make it into movies or TV shows
- 9:43Speaker 2: when it comes to men. And on top of that,
- 9:46Speaker 2: how toxic fanboys and studios are controlling what material gets
- 9:49Speaker 2: made and who gets to participate in making it. If
- 9:51Speaker 2: I could like make a thesis statement of the like
- 9:55Speaker 2: anger that I'm feeling, which, by the way, if this
- 9:57Speaker 2: was a different show, I would read that textus shade.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I was going off. I was going off. I think
- 10:05Speaker 1: it is.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I'm frustrated with who gets to side what canon is,
- 10:11Speaker 2: and then I frustrated with the fact that toxic fandom
- 10:15Speaker 2: is also influencing who gets to decide what canon is
- 10:19Speaker 2: when we are also making fun of fan fiction, which
- 10:21Speaker 2: is what you are doing right right. Yeah, So I
- 10:27Speaker 2: do also want to put in here. I've said it
- 10:29Speaker 2: time and time again. Fan fiction is a hobby for
- 10:32Speaker 2: a lot of people. It's a hobby and it's not
- 10:34Speaker 2: like ever intended to go beyond that. It's like if
- 10:36Speaker 2: you like playing soccer and you're not ever thinking, oh
- 10:38Speaker 2: I'm going to be a professional one d You just
- 10:40Speaker 2: like playing soccer and I had somebody tell me recently
- 10:43Speaker 2: you could make money if you, you know, had a
- 10:46Speaker 2: Patreon and people could read your fan fiction, And I said,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I sure could. But that kind of ruins to me
- 10:50Speaker 2: what fan fiction is, which is this sort of beautiful
- 10:53Speaker 2: free space where we're all doing that, and then I
- 10:56Speaker 2: think it would become this capitalist thing. Part of what
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'm talking about here as part of the problem. So
- 11:04Speaker 2: it's as seemingly simple as a topic as this is,
- 11:07Speaker 2: there are a lot of layers and my mind is
- 11:09Speaker 2: always percolating on it.
- 11:11Speaker 3: So wait for fan fiction that has become successful. Is
- 11:16Speaker 3: that the same thought process like they did they sell out?
- 11:19Speaker 4: Or is it like you know, we want that too?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Uh? To me, it's not they sold out.
- 11:27Speaker 2: To me, there's plenty of fan fiction And this is
- 11:30Speaker 2: the point I'm going to make throughout this that is
- 11:33Speaker 2: really good and like I would pay to read it,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and plenty of it is better than a lot of.
- 11:40Speaker 1: What I see.
- 11:42Speaker 2: But I guess my worry is if like the whole
- 11:46Speaker 2: world of fan fiction got monetized. Like I don't think
- 11:49Speaker 2: it's wrong that some things are picked up because they're
- 11:54Speaker 2: really resonating with people and then they make money.
- 11:57Speaker 1: What bothers me. Is like if the idea that the whole.
- 12:00Speaker 2: If I had to pay to read fan fiction, I
- 12:03Speaker 2: don't think I would, and I.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Love fan fiction, you know I love fan fiction.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's more just like my I don't want
- 12:10Speaker 2: to turn that world into a place where it's only
- 12:14Speaker 2: monetized and capitalized. I like that some people have found success,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and I think that some people could even I think
- 12:22Speaker 2: one person said, what if it was like you just
- 12:24Speaker 2: got the update early and that's the Patreon that you
- 12:27Speaker 2: paid for it is I maybe there's ways it could work.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I just don't want the whole You would pay pace, Yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 2: sometimes I know you would, Yes, I would, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 2: I got no real problem. I do have a problem with,
- 12:42Speaker 2: like some people who have made success from fan fiction
- 12:46Speaker 2: writing fan fiction and then looking down on fan fiction
- 12:49Speaker 2: and getting mad when people write fan fiction about their work.
- 12:51Speaker 1: That bothers me. But that's kind of a set.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yeah that's fair. That's fair though.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a separate issue. Critical mm hmmm. So this
- 12:59Speaker 1: was inspired.
- 12:59Speaker 2: This whole thing was inspired by Yes, the book Abobaffett
- 13:02Speaker 2: recently ending, but also a recent daydream I had of like, ooh,
- 13:06Speaker 2: what if I got to write a Star Wars show,
- 13:10Speaker 2: like what.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Would I do?
- 13:12Speaker 2: And then I had the almost immediate shutting down of
- 13:15Speaker 2: this dream because not because I didn't think I couldn't
- 13:18Speaker 2: do it, but because I thought two things in quick succession. One,
- 13:22Speaker 2: these men doing it are more qualified. Two, I don't
- 13:26Speaker 2: want to deal with the inevitable fanboy backlash, which is
- 13:30Speaker 2: not good because if that's one of the first things,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I think, that's very like, that's already gatekeepy, that's already like, okay,
- 13:42Speaker 2: these men know better, which you know they might, but
- 13:45Speaker 2: it's not. It was more of a just immediate shutting
- 13:48Speaker 2: down of no way I could compete, and it was
- 13:51Speaker 2: less of oh yeah, they've been working in film and
- 13:53Speaker 2: movie and writing. It was more of their men in
- 13:56Speaker 2: this like nerdy world. And then the second, like the
- 13:58Speaker 2: fanboy backlash that I was immedia.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I don't want to deal with that.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I don't want to And I know people who have
- 14:06Speaker 2: left projects because of fan backlash and fanboy backlash specifically,
- 14:13Speaker 2: So that's already like, it's already not great when it
- 14:17Speaker 2: comes to diversity in these fields, but for that to
- 14:22Speaker 2: be causing in this case, I'm thinking of women. I
- 14:25Speaker 2: know to leave that's making it.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Worse, and I do.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I want to put in here, like I know how
- 14:35Speaker 2: annoying it is for people to look at your job
- 14:39Speaker 2: and think, oh, I could do that when you've had
- 14:42Speaker 2: training or been in the business for years total like respect,
- 14:46Speaker 2: but still like.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Just I don't know. I guess I'm questioning.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Who has afforded these opportunities because I still think I
- 14:53Speaker 2: could write something pretty good.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I think I think you could do I think I
- 14:57Speaker 1: could you definitely.
- 14:59Speaker 2: It frustrates me that and I just instantly doubted that,
- 15:02Speaker 2: Like even though I was like, with this idea, I
- 15:03Speaker 2: think I could.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Do it, and then I was like, oh, no, you
- 15:05Speaker 1: can never do that. I will say.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Also, having to deal with studios, especially big studio like Disney,
- 15:11Speaker 2: it seems like a real nightmare. I'm not sure I
- 15:14Speaker 2: could do that very well. But I think I could
- 15:17Speaker 2: write the thing.
- 15:18Speaker 3: You just have to be famous before the fact.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Yes, so we need to make you famous, real famous, and.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Then have the support of Mark Hamill and then you
- 15:27Speaker 3: would be down.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I would melt into a puddle.
- 15:33Speaker 4: I know you would.
- 15:36Speaker 2: That's like if you ever can't get old of me,
- 15:38Speaker 2: like after he ever.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Tweets me or something you can't get old of me,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you know.
- 15:41Speaker 3: By the bye our Twitter, the stuff Mo'm never told you.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Twitter has now they do updates he did not. They
- 15:49Speaker 3: do updates of like you might be interested in this
- 15:51Speaker 3: person's sweet, and we follow a lot of people, and
- 15:56Speaker 3: out of nowhere it says, here's Mark Hamil's sweet.
- 15:59Speaker 4: I didn't even know what it was about.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Out but because someone in the Twitter verse has realized
- 16:03Speaker 3: your love and we don't even follow Mark Hamill on
- 16:06Speaker 3: our stuff, mom never told you, but it needed to
- 16:08Speaker 3: alert us about Mark Hamill's text tweet that I'm pretty
- 16:12Speaker 3: sure it's because of you, which is quite funny because
- 16:15Speaker 3: we don't mention it at all in Twitter. But for
- 16:17Speaker 3: me to get that notification or for me to see
- 16:19Speaker 3: that notification, I was like, this is Annie's fault somehow.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I don't deny it. I don't deny it.
- 16:28Speaker 2: So I wanted to talk about Scream twenty twenty two,
- 16:30Speaker 2: which was a movie that I loved. I saw it
- 16:34Speaker 2: at the drive in and then I was fortunate enough
- 16:37Speaker 2: to see it again and I absolutely adored it, and
- 16:39Speaker 2: it actually addressed some of the stuff we're talking about.
- 16:42Speaker 2: And one of the things they have of course, in
- 16:44Speaker 2: every screen movie they have the scene where they sit
- 16:46Speaker 2: down and they talk about the rules of the horror movies,
- 16:48Speaker 2: because if you haven't seen these movies, they're very, very meta.
- 16:51Speaker 2: And in this one, the character I can't remember her name,
- 16:56Speaker 2: but she's like Randy from the original movie her his niece.
- 17:02Speaker 2: She's like, we got to talk about requels, and she
- 17:06Speaker 2: breaks into this definition of what a requel is and
- 17:10Speaker 2: she's like, you know, the fans are mad, like, you
- 17:13Speaker 2: can't have a straight reboot because they don't want that.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They want some of the legacy characters from the other one.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But you can't continue from what the last movie did
- 17:21Speaker 2: because they hated that. So you have to create something
- 17:25Speaker 2: that's not quite a sequel. It's a requel. It's in
- 17:27Speaker 2: between a reboot and a sequel. And so the movie
- 17:32Speaker 2: in itself, yes, exactly, and no joke, they bought up
- 17:36Speaker 2: Star Wars. In that conversation the Last Jedi in particular,
- 17:42Speaker 2: the first text.
- 17:43Speaker 4: I got about the movie, Oh my god, they're talking about.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Star Wars and fan FICTIONID and Mary Zeus, which was
- 17:49Speaker 2: all the all these critiques that were thrown against, like
- 17:55Speaker 2: the Mary Sue being ray and then you know this
- 17:59Speaker 2: is just fan fiction, which is part of what I
- 18:01Speaker 2: think is really frustrating me because it is fan fiction.
- 18:05Speaker 2: But you're making it sound like it's good when they
- 18:08Speaker 2: do it how you want them to do it, but
- 18:10Speaker 2: it's not good when they don't do it the way
- 18:13Speaker 2: you think is the appropriate ray, appropriate way, appropriate ray.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But they also talked about in this movie. They talked
- 18:23Speaker 2: about toxic fanboys and toxic fandom and I wish I
- 18:26Speaker 2: could spoil the ending because it's so good and I
- 18:29Speaker 2: have so many thoughts about it.
- 18:30Speaker 1: But essentially, it's like.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Fans, this toxic fan culture, thinking they're entitled to a thing,
- 18:41Speaker 2: getting angry when they don't get that thing, and then
- 18:45Speaker 2: getting violent when they don't get that thing, and trying
- 18:50Speaker 2: to create something through violence that they believe is better. Also,
- 18:55Speaker 2: it is all about kind of it's very parallel to
- 18:58Speaker 2: Rage Journey.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I'll just leave it at that.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So good, but yes, let us talk about the Star Wars. So, okay,
- 19:09Speaker 2: I've been fired up.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I've been fired up.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Way to go?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So I think I was getting really angry
- 19:15Speaker 2: watching there's been a lot of announcements around Star Wars lately,
- 19:18Speaker 2: and I also had the book of both fat and
- 19:22Speaker 2: I was just getting angry and angrier about this idea
- 19:24Speaker 2: that like these kind of white fanboys getting paid millions
- 19:28Speaker 2: of dollars to write fan fiction while it's so looked
- 19:32Speaker 2: down upon and other like any other way, but you're
- 19:37Speaker 2: doing the same thing. You're doing the same thing. You're
- 19:41Speaker 2: just a dude and you're doing it and you got money.
- 19:45Speaker 2: And like maybe I'm not even saying they're not talent.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I'm just saying, like I'm kind of annoyed at this
- 19:52Speaker 2: why we are differentiating where well they're doing it so.
- 19:56Speaker 1: That's not fan fiction, but it is.
- 19:58Speaker 2: It absolutely is, And I feel like it's proving to
- 20:02Speaker 2: me over and over again that they these kind of
- 20:09Speaker 2: fanboys at large, I'll say, missed the power of the
- 20:13Speaker 2: ending of Return the Jedi, which I think is feminist
- 20:16Speaker 2: in nature, and that's the whole thing, and that they
- 20:18Speaker 2: connect hardcore with like ass Slash Failure characters and think
- 20:24Speaker 2: that violence and combat is the answer.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Which I've actually.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Thought a lot about this and I want to come
- 20:29Speaker 2: back and do it an episode on the glorification of
- 20:31Speaker 2: the Ass. But anyway, when so, when a lot of
- 20:34Speaker 2: these fanboys grew up who hated returned the Jedi by
- 20:38Speaker 2: the way, they hated it when came out. They got
- 20:41Speaker 2: to fix it, which to me is just like constantly.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It's you know, I love being a fan, but it's
- 20:49Speaker 1: also sad sometimes I see it.
- 20:53Speaker 3: That was a supernatural right when I was giving into
- 20:55Speaker 3: it in the ending, and there was so much debate
- 20:57Speaker 3: and even today not too loss. I somehow got on
- 21:00Speaker 3: TikTok and they're debating about who they hate and why they.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Hate them, and I was like, hewn, that seems unnecessary.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yes, agreed, Agreed, And I try really hard.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I try really really hard because I am a big
- 21:12Speaker 2: fan of stuff, Like I don't want to make people
- 21:16Speaker 2: feel bad about something they're a fan of as long
- 21:19Speaker 2: as it's not like hornfole or whatever, like right if
- 21:21Speaker 2: we have different opinions, because I'm very sensitive to that actually,
- 21:24Speaker 2: and so I try to be mindful of you know,
- 21:26Speaker 2: like there's a certain character that you brought back that
- 21:29Speaker 2: I hate in Book of popa Fat, but I know
- 21:31Speaker 2: a bunch of people like him.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So I was trying to be like, Okay.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Cad Bane, Yeah, I was screaming at the TV.
- 21:43Speaker 1: No.
- 21:43Speaker 3: I feel like from the Rebels portion that I saw
- 21:46Speaker 3: that cad Bain should have been fighting Finnick, but I
- 21:48Speaker 3: was like, okay, that's true, or the bad Batch it
- 21:52Speaker 3: was on bad Batch where they fight.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Yeah bad Batch.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and so again yeah, I try to be like,
- 21:58Speaker 2: it's not it's okay, this is my experience. But yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It also cracks me up that a lot of fan
- 22:17Speaker 2: boys who were behind the whole not my Luke Skywalker
- 22:20Speaker 2: thing were mad that he wasn't a cinnamon role anymore.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But if I told him what a cinnamon role was,
- 22:26Speaker 1: they would deny it. They would deny.
- 22:28Speaker 3: That that was not masculine enough for them.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Absolutely, So that kind of cracks me up.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Also, just another thread, Pedro Pascal is essentially playing the
- 22:39Speaker 2: same character and the same dilemma in terms of audience,
- 22:44Speaker 2: which again I don't want to spoil things, but in
- 22:47Speaker 2: the last of Us, so that.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Was kind of I kept thinking that, like, wow, the same.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Oh you're doing.
- 22:53Speaker 3: He's played the Mendo character in the last it's the
- 22:56Speaker 3: same character.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, So I guess what's.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Really annoying to me is that, yes, these toxic fanboys
- 23:04Speaker 2: are controlling what gets made in terms of like like
- 23:09Speaker 2: review bombing or just harassing people on social media, like
- 23:13Speaker 2: all these things that are intimidating people like me. Not
- 23:16Speaker 2: that I'm saying I could, I'm going to succeed, but
- 23:18Speaker 2: like I wouldn't even think of it, like I was immediate,
- 23:21Speaker 2: like no, because of this, and that is a term
- 23:24Speaker 2: of gatekeeping, and that at least somewhat along with studios interfering,
- 23:31Speaker 2: that's just influencing these franchises in particular, so heavily, not
- 23:36Speaker 2: just Star Wars. And on top of that, a lot
- 23:38Speaker 2: of the writers paid to write this glorified fan fiction
- 23:42Speaker 2: are still men who I think would be outraged if
- 23:45Speaker 2: it was called fan fiction. I think they would be
- 23:47Speaker 2: real pissed.
- 23:49Speaker 4: So do we know Felony's stance on fan fiction because.
- 23:53Speaker 3: He the way he describes why he loves it so much,
- 23:57Speaker 3: it sounds like he's talking about fan fiction because he
- 23:59Speaker 3: was like, I the story, and I would imagine what.
- 24:01Speaker 2: If Yeah, I don't know, but I imagine it would
- 24:08Speaker 2: not be good because my thing is like I still
- 24:11Speaker 2: think even if even if he was like okay, yeah,
- 24:14Speaker 2: fan fiction, there's still that hang up on that idea
- 24:18Speaker 2: that fan fiction is written by girls, young girls who
- 24:22Speaker 2: just want to have sex with like characters. They like,
- 24:26Speaker 2: and that creeps them out and they dismiss it, which
- 24:30Speaker 2: is not true.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's not the case like that can't exist, and I
- 24:33Speaker 1: don't think there's anything wrong with.
- 24:35Speaker 3: That existing, right Wait, but not the point of like
- 24:38Speaker 3: when boys would have pictures of scantily clad celebrities, that's
- 24:43Speaker 3: that same kind of level, except it's five.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's that's okay because male sexuality is fine,
- 24:51Speaker 2: but when it comes to young girls, that's not fine,
- 24:54Speaker 2: Like that's creepy.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is I have a lot of experience,
- 24:58Speaker 2: as we've discussed in the world of fans fiction, so
- 25:01Speaker 2: this is a lot of my opinion and I will
- 25:03Speaker 2: acknowledge that, but I've also I've got experience, right, right,
- 25:08Speaker 2: I mean maybe that's ultimately what I'm trying to say is,
- 25:10Speaker 2: can we just like stop pretending that it's only young
- 25:14Speaker 2: girls who have some kind of sexual thing that freaks
- 25:18Speaker 2: you out writing fan fiction that you're looking down on
- 25:21Speaker 2: when that's what you are doing.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And I'm not saying it.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Right and I'm not even like, again, I have no idea.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Maybe they're totally into fan fiction, but it just I
- 25:32Speaker 2: just feel like a lot of people would be furious,
- 25:37Speaker 2: like not just mad, but like outraged. If you said, oh,
- 25:41Speaker 2: the concept of labeling mm hmmm, yeah, Like, oh, that's
- 25:47Speaker 2: that's not academic and that's not good, so therefore no,
- 25:51Speaker 2: And then I think like, yeah, I guess it's just
- 25:55Speaker 2: frustrating because they make a lot of money off right,
- 25:59Speaker 2: and they get to decide what canon is.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Oh right, and right now.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I'm still confused by that, like that's still a way
- 26:07Speaker 3: that doesn't exist.
- 26:08Speaker 4: How is it canon?
- 26:08Speaker 2: Now?
- 26:09Speaker 1: Okay?
- 26:09Speaker 4: Cool?
- 26:09Speaker 1: Cool? Cool?
- 26:10Speaker 4: Oh look, I have to ask you that all the time.
- 26:13Speaker 2: I'm like what, Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh. So
- 26:17Speaker 2: I have my own head canon pretty pretty well. So
- 26:20Speaker 2: I'm like, I ignore that this happened because it's no
- 26:23Speaker 2: way I'll accept this. Yeah, it's a whole thing.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Bringing up so many issues right now.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I was outraged over the past two days.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I was like my friend she texted me, she said,
- 26:38Speaker 2: it sounds like you're grieving, and I was like, maybe,
- 26:43Speaker 2: but perhaps you are. I also am very like I
- 26:47Speaker 2: try very hard, like this will pass. I'm I'm right now,
- 26:51Speaker 2: I'm feeling it real hard, but this will pass, And
- 26:55Speaker 2: I'm I try really hard not to be like it's
- 26:58Speaker 2: not worth in my opinion, it's worth getting upset over,
- 27:01Speaker 2: but it's not worth getting that upset over, like I
- 27:03Speaker 2: have ultimately no control, even though I was also thinking
- 27:06Speaker 2: about that, like what if a bunch of I don't know,
- 27:09Speaker 2: feminist Luke Skywalker fans got.
- 27:12Speaker 1: On and were like, hey, creators, if you don't do
- 27:15Speaker 1: this like the fanboys, could you imagine? Gosh? I was
- 27:21Speaker 1: so mad when I write this, but I wrote this outlet.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I can tell because I wrote, they are the ones
- 27:25Speaker 2: with attachment issues explanation.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I agree. I think that's true. Past it.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Wait, I was like, what do you mean you agree?
- 27:32Speaker 4: You said it. You can't agree with yourself everyone who
- 27:35Speaker 4: said it.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I can't agree with past andy who was in the
- 27:39Speaker 2: throes of emotion. Oh my gosh, so much. And then
- 27:48Speaker 2: I wrote, pay me in all caps are consult me.
- 27:51Speaker 2: That's all I'm saying. I think I could be a
- 27:52Speaker 2: pretty good consultant.
- 27:54Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I think you've proven yourself on a movie crush, especially
- 27:57Speaker 3: you are teaching uh Chuck so much.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I am the Jedi master.
- 28:07Speaker 4: Of Star Wars.
- 28:09Speaker 1: It's like, I gotta I gotta let go of my emotions.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I gotta release them into the Force.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I'm working on it, but let me ask you a
- 28:18Speaker 3: real quick because I feel like I need to and
- 28:20Speaker 3: go ahead and tell y'all this is a spoiler for
- 28:23Speaker 3: Bubba Fett. So if you want to pause it, skip
- 28:25Speaker 3: over it for a minute, you can. So Grogu has decided.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Not to be a Jedi. Correct, that's where we're at,
- 28:32Speaker 4: and this is the beginning decided with Mandalorian.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he's decided it at this point in time because
- 28:39Speaker 2: he's essentially the same choice that Yoda gave Luke, where
- 28:43Speaker 2: he's like, you can't go save your friends or you're
- 28:45Speaker 2: draining show.
- 28:46Speaker 1: It's kind of the same thing.
- 28:47Speaker 4: So Luke a parallel their parallel journey that.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Kind of because of because of how Grogu ages it's
- 28:56Speaker 1: not gonna work.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I don't know again, Like that's some one of those
- 29:00Speaker 2: things where I'm like, I don't know if this is
- 29:02Speaker 2: your real life problem or you're in Cannon problem, but uh,
- 29:07Speaker 2: the way they're currently handling it, it won't work because
- 29:10Speaker 2: Luke will beat it by then.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Okay, moving on, Yeah, past that spoiler.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Pass the spoiler, but yes, thank you to all of
- 29:20Speaker 2: my friends and some of you listeners who have listened
- 29:23Speaker 2: to we just vent. I mean the text exchanges I've
- 29:27Speaker 2: had through these tough fandom times and cheers cheers to me, yes, yes,
- 29:38Speaker 2: and go write all the fan fiction. Go read all
- 29:40Speaker 2: the fan fiction. There's some amazing stuff. I mean, this
- 29:43Speaker 2: was like this book of Boba Fett. Thing was like
- 29:46Speaker 2: Chum and the fan fiction waters. All of a sudden,
- 29:49Speaker 2: a lot of people write.
- 29:52Speaker 4: There was a lot of people with a lot of opinions.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Oh gosh, this show almost as many as the Marvel shows.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, and and just like that too, because
- 30:04Speaker 2: it was very it was very divided, it was very polarized.
- 30:06Speaker 3: I would say, I feel like the Mandalorian people just
- 30:09Speaker 3: either really just lovet like it felt like that was
- 30:12Speaker 3: like a good show for people to be back into
- 30:14Speaker 3: this world, but like the rest of them had so
- 30:16Speaker 3: much Why did you do it this way?
- 30:19Speaker 2: I was like, well, damn, yeah, I mean that's kind
- 30:22Speaker 2: of my biggest I keep hearing Miley Cyrus. You gave
- 30:27Speaker 2: it like a reckckball because the last three episodes were.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Not about Bubba Fet. That was an ad for the
- 30:33Speaker 1: Mandalorian season three.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's and I don't really even like Bubba Fet,
- 30:37Speaker 2: but I was willing to give him a try, and
- 30:39Speaker 2: then they were like, never mind, it's gonna be about
- 30:41Speaker 2: this now, and he's not even in the episodes.
- 30:44Speaker 3: I love Phoenix, so I was very excited because I
- 30:46Speaker 3: feel like they should have done more with.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Her, definitely, but okay, agreed, agreed. Well, thanks for letting
- 30:53Speaker 1: me have this space all day. I knew probably going
- 31:00Speaker 1: to go.
- 31:00Speaker 4: I feel like we're gonna have another one soon.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I think we might when I've like settled down a
- 31:04Speaker 1: little bit.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Oh so thanks listeners for allowing me to have this journey.
