- 0:03People assume that if I'm not a Democrat anymore, then I must be
- 0:07a Republican or I must be conservative.
- 0:09I still consider myself a liberal, but liberalism has
- 0:12changed and I don't fit there anymore.
- 0:19As a black kid growing up in Texas, you were taught that you
- 0:22had to support Democrats because Republicans were for white
- 0:26people supporting the rich. And we definitely weren't rich.
- 0:30Basically, our default setting is to be a Democrat.
- 0:32I'm a Democrat. My parents are Democrats.
- 0:34I was a huge Obama supporter. In the 2016 primary, I voted for
- 0:39Bernie Sanders. I mean, I was a socialist.
- 0:46It wasn't until we got married and began expecting our own
- 0:49family that I began to kind of question whether or not the
- 0:53things that we were really promoting and supporting.
- 0:56Were. In line with the way we were
- 0:58living, and that was when the shift kind of began for us.
- 1:03I was renting a room in this woman's apartment.
- 1:05She had three or four kids from three or four different fathers.
- 1:08She was my age. Most of them were incarcerated.
- 1:11I asked her, what do you do? She goes, I'm in the system.
- 1:15It feels like Democrats sort of get people hooked on this drug
- 1:18of free money where they basically say, you know, if you
- 1:20want your fix, you have to keep voting for us.
- 1:28And then this bold man comes down an escalator in New York
- 1:33City. I couldn't come out and say it
- 1:37right away, but deep down the side I knew he was going to be
- 1:41the first Republican that I ever voted for.
- 1:49His entire campaign works for all Americans.
- 1:52That was a turning point for me. One of the hardest things to do
- 1:57is to challenge your own beliefs.
- 2:00Going straight to the source is really how I was able to
- 2:04overcome some of those pitfalls. And so I want people to hear my
- 2:06story and know that you can actually go from being a
- 2:09democratic socialist to a Trump supporter, But you have to look
- 2:14deeper. I think there's a political
- 2:16realignment that's taking place. I've always been very anti war
- 2:20and now Trump is by a mile the anti war candidate.
- 2:23I've always been very much for free speech.
- 2:26Trump is now, by a mile the more pro free speech candidate.
- 2:30What's at stake in November is pretty much everywhere you look,
- 2:33you either see prosperity and liberty and things that you want
- 2:37to preserve. Or if you're a Democrat,
- 2:38everywhere you look you see something you want to tear down
- 2:40and remake in the image of some other country that's not as
- 2:42successful as we are. I'm trying to conserve our
- 2:45values, our Constitution, our God-given rights, right to bear
- 2:49arms, freedom of speech, all the things that has always made this
- 2:52country great. You know, it took me a good long
- 2:55time to get here, but I hope that Trump wins and that we can
- 2:59continue with the progress that he's made and the policies that
- 3:01he's put into place. Let's get our economy back on
- 3:04track and let's be moving in the right direction.
