- 0:55Speaker 6: at the Fanatics Sports Book at Ocean Casino Resort in
- 0:58Speaker 6: Atlantic City. We've got a whole Football at four round
- 1:01Speaker 6: table for you here, and we're gonna kick off a
- 1:04Speaker 6: whole little hour of coverage here of Super Bowl sixty
- 1:08Speaker 6: and everything else that's going on. The Eagles are making
- 1:10Speaker 6: news on Mike Gale, of course, Scott Grason is here.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Adam Kaplan from the Inside the Birds Podcast, of course,
- 1:15Speaker 6: you're here doing football at four all the time. Gretco
- 1:17Speaker 6: Sell from the Inside of the Tape Show is sitting
- 1:20Speaker 6: to my right. He's also on my flight, as was Adam.
- 1:22Speaker 6: Was your flight better than mine? Because I had the
- 1:24Speaker 6: Middle Sea? Not ideal?
- 1:26Speaker 4: It was six hours, it was long.
- 1:28Speaker 6: It was tough to sit in that middle and I
- 1:29Speaker 6: couldn't fall asleep. And to my left over here is
- 1:32Speaker 6: Brian Hoyer NBC Boston and covers the Patriots. Played with
- 1:37Speaker 6: the Patriots, of course, played in the NFL for years,
- 1:40Speaker 6: almost played for the Eagles. From what I understand here,
- 1:42Speaker 6: maybe we can get that little nugget there for I
- 1:44Speaker 6: can remember, hard to remember, but Brian Hoyer is gonna
- 1:51Speaker 6: join us for a little football at four as well,
- 1:54Speaker 6: and Super Bowl sixty is upon us. I will say, like,
- 1:57Speaker 6: the Patriots obviously are used to being in this game,
- 2:00Speaker 6: but were you anticipating being this team being in this game.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I thought they would be a lot.
- 2:06Speaker 5: I thought they would be better than most people, just
- 2:08Speaker 5: based on knowing Vrabel. Obviously, Josh McDaniel's coming back watching
- 2:12Speaker 5: Drake May and his development as a rookie. I thought
- 2:15Speaker 5: they made some really good maybe not high profile obviously
- 2:18Speaker 5: Mark Williams from from Philly, but some of the other
- 2:21Speaker 5: signings were just very tactical guys that fit what they
- 2:24Speaker 5: were looking to do. They drafted well, and we were
- 2:27Speaker 5: just saying before we came on here. I mean they
- 2:29Speaker 5: were in every single They lost three games, and those
- 2:32Speaker 5: three games take away two or three bad plays and
- 2:35Speaker 5: they win those. They they've been, to me, the most
- 2:38Speaker 5: consistent team the entire season.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And I know people want to.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Talk about the schedule, but if we're going off of that,
- 2:43Speaker 5: then the Browns will be in the Super Bowl next year.
- 2:45Speaker 4: We know that's not happening, So that's right.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, let me you were.
- 2:50Speaker 4: A Super Bowl champion. What it was like for backup?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:55Speaker 5: I mean for me, it was so great because all
- 2:58Speaker 5: of my Super Bow appearances with the Patriots.
- 3:00Speaker 4: For them, it was just another week.
- 3:01Speaker 5: You know, they had gone so many times that they
- 3:04Speaker 5: had the scheduling like immediately, you know, you win the
- 3:07Speaker 5: game on Sunday night, DAFC Chames game Monday, you'd come in,
- 3:10Speaker 5: you'd have a operations meeting. Okay, here's what your family needs.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Take this home to them. Here's what we're doing. This
- 3:17Speaker 5: is the day where like they they had everything laid
- 3:20Speaker 5: out so well.
- 3:21Speaker 2: So for me, it was just another week of preparation.
- 3:24Speaker 5: And for me as a backup, like you know, you
- 3:26Speaker 5: didn't I didn't play at all a lot during those
- 3:29Speaker 5: years and went to the Super Bowl and you're like,
- 3:30Speaker 5: all right, well, if I'm gonna play this game, I'm
- 3:31Speaker 5: sure as hell gonna be prepared, right right, you do
- 3:34Speaker 5: extra preparation.
- 3:35Speaker 2: A big part of.
- 3:36Speaker 5: It too, is preparing our defense for what they're gonna
- 3:39Speaker 5: go against, which that that was huge. That was huge
- 3:42Speaker 5: for me when we were playing the Rams in twenty
- 3:44Speaker 5: eighteen because I had just been in that West Coast
- 3:47Speaker 5: system with Kyle Shanahan Sean McVay running a very similar system.
- 3:50Speaker 5: So I felt confident in the looks that we were
- 3:52Speaker 5: gonna give them.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I felt confident in talking to.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Brian Flores and Bill and you know, the players on
- 3:58Speaker 5: that defense, whether it was the mccordy's or High Time
- 4:00Speaker 5: or Chung whatever, like, I feel pretty confident this is
- 4:03Speaker 5: how they're going to try to attack, you guys.
- 4:06Speaker 6: I think one of the things about this week that's
- 4:09Speaker 6: kind of interesting as we talk about the quarterbacks. We've
- 4:13Speaker 6: been asking all week long here which of these two
- 4:17Speaker 6: teams in the quarterback have the staying power? Like is
- 4:20Speaker 6: it one of these one hit wonder teams or do
- 4:24Speaker 6: these two teams have the magic? Now that Seattle is
- 4:27Speaker 6: becoming the new NFC team and that the Patriots will
- 4:31Speaker 6: be here for the long run.
- 4:33Speaker 5: I would say, in my opinion, the Patriots are set
- 4:35Speaker 5: up for long more long term success because look who's
- 4:39Speaker 5: leaving the Seahawks, right, Klint Kubiak's leaving. Who's gonna replace him?
- 4:43Speaker 5: This is a thing that happened in Detroit, Right, you're successful.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Ben Johnson leaves, Aaron Glenn leaves like they don't have
- 4:48Speaker 5: the same season. And so I would say that's gonna
- 4:51Speaker 5: be a big lingering question for Seattle.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Who's the OC.
- 4:54Speaker 5: You know Josh McDaniels is going to be there for
- 4:56Speaker 5: a while, you know Mike Rabel is going to be there.
- 4:59Speaker 5: They've built a foundation and they're gonna be able to
- 5:01Speaker 5: add those pieces.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:02Speaker 5: I always say, uh, for the Seahawks, Look, they have
- 5:05Speaker 5: a lot of young talent. Right, you got j s
- 5:06Speaker 5: n you got him, and worry you got you got,
- 5:09Speaker 5: you got core guys, and I think Mike McDonald's a
- 5:11Speaker 5: phenomenal coach, so uh, they will be there. But I
- 5:14Speaker 5: guess my question is who replaces Clint Kubiak, And.
- 5:17Speaker 7: The question is do they stay in his sense with
- 5:19Speaker 7: the same system, because don't forget, he was with Kyle,
- 5:22Speaker 7: then he was with Kevin, and now he was with Kubiak,
- 5:25Speaker 7: So all that's relatively I'm sure there's some tweaks, but
- 5:27Speaker 7: it's relatively the same. So you would think they'd want
- 5:30Speaker 7: to go with someone from that school.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Maybe they take Clint's younger brother, Clay from San Francisco, right, like, hey,
- 5:36Speaker 5: well one brother to the next, and things would be
- 5:38Speaker 5: very similar.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Shocked if something like that happens.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Correct. Let me let me ask you this question.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Last year, which he was I liked him, what the
- 5:58Speaker 8: North Carolina tape?
- 6:00Speaker 4: I liked his tape.
- 6:01Speaker 7: I thought that he had a couple of issues that
- 6:03Speaker 7: were easily fixable. You know, he was a drifter in college,
- 6:06Speaker 7: and that's a coachable thing.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I know Brian would agree with.
- 6:09Speaker 7: That, meaning that he would drop back and he would
- 6:12Speaker 7: had a tendency to kind of drift to his left.
- 6:14Speaker 7: So what that does is you create your own pressure
- 6:17Speaker 7: because the old line is not past protecting. They're pass
- 6:20Speaker 7: protecting with you being straight back on the midline, So
- 6:22Speaker 7: if you drift, you're creating your own pressure. But that's
- 6:25Speaker 7: a very coachable thing. Now every once in a while
- 6:28Speaker 7: he'll do that, but they clearly worked on it with him.
- 6:31Speaker 7: I mean, even last year as a rookie, I didn't
- 6:32Speaker 7: think he did that very much. The one thing that
- 6:35Speaker 7: I think has really shown in the NFL, which I
- 6:37Speaker 7: wouldn't call it a question based on his college tape,
- 6:40Speaker 7: but it wasn't like this in college to the extent
- 6:42Speaker 7: is he's been really precise with his ball location in
- 6:45Speaker 7: the NFL. And I thought his college tape he wasn't
- 6:47Speaker 7: exactly like that. I wouldn't call him scattershot in his
- 6:50Speaker 7: college tape, but he wasn't one of those guys that
- 6:52Speaker 7: was just precise all the time. But he has been
- 6:56Speaker 7: really precise.
- 6:56Speaker 4: In the NFL.
- 6:57Speaker 5: I think the one thing, and this gets lost is
- 7:00Speaker 5: a big part of accuracy is not physical.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's it's mental and knowing where to throw the football.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Because if you know where to throw the football based
- 7:08Speaker 5: on the coverage, which you and I have talked about right,
- 7:10Speaker 5: you're gonna get to a better open guy as opposed
- 7:13Speaker 5: to let me just drop back and I'll go through
- 7:16Speaker 5: and maybe I feel like that guy's open.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And I'll throw it.
- 7:18Speaker 5: When you know the intent of what you're supposed to do,
- 7:21Speaker 5: that actually allows you to have better completion percentage because
- 7:25Speaker 5: you're getting to the guy that's the let's call it
- 7:28Speaker 5: the not the number one read or whatever, but the
- 7:31Speaker 5: guy who's probably in the progression based on the coverage
- 7:34Speaker 5: where you need to go. And I think obviously the
- 7:36Speaker 5: physical side, I've seen him really improve in pocket presence,
- 7:39Speaker 5: stepping up into the pocket instead of drifting.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That's obviously goes a credit.
- 7:44Speaker 5: To his work with Josh and Ashton Grant and Riley Larkin,
- 7:48Speaker 5: the guys that are there in the quarterback room with
- 7:49Speaker 5: them and doing those drills, but also his understanding of
- 7:53Speaker 5: this offense and that you know how many guys lead
- 7:55Speaker 5: the league in completion percentage but also in yards per attempt,
- 7:58Speaker 5: and that's because when he takes those shots, that's where
- 8:01Speaker 5: he's supposed to go with the football. He's not forcing them,
- 8:03Speaker 5: and so that's been the most impressing thing because he
- 8:06Speaker 5: looks calm and composed, exactly.
- 8:08Speaker 4: He's never frenetic. I never.
- 8:09Speaker 7: So here's a question for you, because I think one
- 8:11Speaker 7: of the things, and I would assume this comes with experience.
- 8:14Speaker 7: What I really like about him is his willingness to
- 8:17Speaker 7: stay in the pocket and squeezed pockets and.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Still deliver the football.
- 8:20Speaker 7: But at times he'll stay too long, which is why
- 8:23Speaker 7: he gets sacked.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 8:24Speaker 7: Now, is that just a feel thing that comes with experience, Yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 7: I think so.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Look, I was never a guy who was going to
- 8:30Speaker 2: pull the ball down and run.
- 8:31Speaker 5: But I think there's a there's a part of his
- 8:33Speaker 5: you know, whether it's conscious or unconscious, and he's had
- 8:36Speaker 5: successes like I don't want to have to use my
- 8:38Speaker 5: legs if I don't have to. Now, we saw Rabel
- 8:40Speaker 5: in the in the Denver game, miked up afterwards saying, hey,
- 8:44Speaker 5: you got to make some plays with their legs.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Go ahead and do it. Like it's a balance in
- 8:47Speaker 4: the nature of that game too. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:49Speaker 5: But I think what they've taught Drake is go through
- 8:52Speaker 5: the progression, go with what the defense is telling you.
- 8:55Speaker 5: But if you see you know the ce's part, like
- 8:58Speaker 5: that's a dynamic part of your game. And so I
- 9:00Speaker 5: think That's what makes him so unique is he's not
- 9:03Speaker 5: forcing the right right He's actually trying.
- 9:06Speaker 2: To play quarterback and do it the right way.
- 9:08Speaker 5: But as to your point, I think he's big and strong,
- 9:10Speaker 5: and he thinks I can hang in here and I
- 9:12Speaker 5: can still throw it and there's guys around me. Now
- 9:14Speaker 5: all of a sudden the ball gets loose, and that's
- 9:15Speaker 5: what some of those fumbles right right, I'm curious three
- 9:22Speaker 5: I mean twice in New England and once in Vegas.
- 9:25Speaker 2: So yeah, that makes people ask me this all the time.
- 9:30Speaker 5: And I think it goes back to his experience and
- 9:33Speaker 5: the way that this offense was built was obviously Josh
- 9:36Speaker 5: is very smart and very innovative, and so is Tom Brady,
- 9:40Speaker 5: and so were the players that were around those guys,
- 9:43Speaker 5: and so each year you were able to peel back
- 9:45Speaker 5: the layers of the onions, so to speak, and add
- 9:48Speaker 5: very intricate, very detailed levels to this offense. It's not
- 9:53Speaker 5: it's a game plan offense. What they ran against Denver
- 9:56Speaker 5: they may not run against Seattle. But they have a
- 9:59Speaker 5: very good base foundation. And Josh is as good at
- 10:02Speaker 5: anybody as watching the opponent figuring out, you know, what
- 10:06Speaker 5: are their strengths, what are their weaknesses, how do we
- 10:07Speaker 5: protect against their strengths, how do we attack their weaknesses?
- 10:10Speaker 5: And all by the while adjusting on the fly. Like
- 10:14Speaker 5: when we beat the Rams in Super Bowl fifty three,
- 10:17Speaker 5: we practiced for two weeks, Wade Phillips. We had a target,
- 10:20Speaker 5: We knew exactly what they did, how they were going
- 10:23Speaker 5: to do it.
- 10:23Speaker 2: We get to the game, they've completely changed everything.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Really, they have changed their defense because they knew if
- 10:29Speaker 5: they were a sitting target like Brady and McDaniels, so
- 10:33Speaker 5: on the sideline, we are literally adjusting the game plan.
- 10:35Speaker 5: And finally, in that I guess it was the fourth quarter,
- 10:39Speaker 5: Josh pulls the entire offense up. He says, look, I
- 10:42Speaker 5: know we put a lot of work in at this
- 10:43Speaker 5: for two weeks. If we don't come up with a
- 10:46Speaker 5: new plan right here, right now, we are not going
- 10:48Speaker 5: to be able to move and score this.
- 10:49Speaker 2: We were moving the ball, we couldn't score on them.
- 10:51Speaker 5: So we developed this new package and it was basically
- 10:54Speaker 5: a big package where we put Gronk, Dwayne Allen, Devlin,
- 10:59Speaker 5: Sony Michelle, and Edelman because it was the only way
- 11:03Speaker 5: we were gonna get their base defense on the field.
- 11:05Speaker 5: If we put James White back there, didn't matter who
- 11:07Speaker 5: else was in, they were gonna play Nickel and we
- 11:08Speaker 5: didn't want to have to do that. So that's that
- 11:10Speaker 5: famous drive where we're basically in like thirteen or twelve
- 11:15Speaker 5: ball down, so we got we've gotten that personnel to
- 11:18Speaker 5: throw the recall.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Right, yeah on that.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Okay, you mentioned McDaniel and kind of what's going on
- 11:25Speaker 6: in the league. Why do you think a guy like
- 11:29Speaker 6: McDaniel flourishes in this role but maybe not as the
- 11:32Speaker 6: main guy.
- 11:33Speaker 5: I was in Vegas with him when he was the
- 11:34Speaker 5: head coach, and I thought it was the greatest setup ever.
- 11:37Speaker 4: I mean it was.
- 11:37Speaker 5: It was all the great things of New England and
- 11:39Speaker 5: in a place where it wasn't all doom and gloom.
- 11:42Speaker 5: But since some of the players out there they saw
- 11:43Speaker 5: it as doom and gloom, and I think, and I
- 11:45Speaker 5: look at that situation, those guys out there, and I
- 11:48Speaker 5: did something with Gruden this morning, and I don't know
- 11:50Speaker 5: how you cannot love this guy. Those guys in Vegas
- 11:52Speaker 5: they loved John Gruden. They wanted him to be their
- 11:55Speaker 5: head coach. Okay, he doesn't work out, you know, because
- 11:58Speaker 5: of all those reasons. Then Bisacia come and it takes over.
- 12:00Speaker 5: And they loved Bisacia, so he was a good coach.
- 12:03Speaker 5: So when when Josh gets hired, you got a whole
- 12:05Speaker 5: team of they love the one guy, they love the
- 12:08Speaker 5: next guy. Here comes a guy from New England and
- 12:10Speaker 5: then New England hate is real. I know, I'm talking
- 12:11Speaker 5: to a Philly station and you guys been, I promise
- 12:14Speaker 5: you when I would go to other places, I'm like,
- 12:15Speaker 5: I don't get it, Like why why did it? Why
- 12:17Speaker 5: does everyone hate the Patriots?
- 12:19Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 12:19Speaker 5: And so you know, he comes into that situation and uh,
- 12:24Speaker 5: I didn't. I didn't like how he was treated at
- 12:26Speaker 5: the end there, and I witnessed that firsthand.
- 12:28Speaker 2: He's a great coach.
- 12:30Speaker 5: He he obviously the offensive side of the football, but
- 12:33Speaker 5: he understands football in general. He understands defense because he
- 12:36Speaker 5: started off on the defense side in New England and
- 12:39Speaker 5: he's been with Bill and he's kind of created his
- 12:42Speaker 5: own personality to it. So, look, I think he got
- 12:45Speaker 5: the short end of the stick. I think, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 5: it probably not likely in the near future, but I
- 12:50Speaker 5: think down the road you could see him getting another chance.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Well let's flip the script.
- 12:53Speaker 7: If I could Yeah, you obviously know the Shanahan offense
- 12:56Speaker 7: too because you were there.
- 12:58Speaker 6: So now, oh way, Brian Hoyer is the voice you're
- 13:01Speaker 6: hearing answering a lot of these questions just for the b.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Pay no, no, you're right.
- 13:06Speaker 7: So why do you think that Donald, because obviously when
- 13:10Speaker 7: he was he was with Kyle for a year and
- 13:11Speaker 7: then he went to O'Connell and O'Connell has a lot
- 13:13Speaker 7: of them McVeigh Shanahan to him, and now he's with Kobiak.
- 13:17Speaker 7: Why does in your mind, does that really work well
- 13:19Speaker 7: with Donald?
- 13:20Speaker 5: Well, I think you obviously the system, but also the situation.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I mean, this guy goes to New York. It's not
- 13:26Speaker 2: a good situation.
- 13:26Speaker 5: He doesn't have the right people around him to support him,
- 13:30Speaker 5: and not just coaches but players, and I would say
- 13:32Speaker 5: even the organization, infrastructure, the infrastructure, same thing in Carolina.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I think going and having a reset year in San
- 13:38Speaker 5: Francisco where there wasn't any pressure on him, he was
- 13:40Speaker 5: the backup quarterback. He could spend all that time with
- 13:43Speaker 5: Kyle and the way Kyle teaches offense and learn and
- 13:46Speaker 5: in a weird way, like he never had an opportunity
- 13:48Speaker 5: to learn from anyone, Right, he was thrown in the
- 13:49Speaker 5: fire right away. You watch Brock perty and Brock has
- 13:52Speaker 5: obviously become a really good quarterback. And then go to
- 13:54Speaker 5: Minnesota and I'm sure you know there was talk that
- 13:57Speaker 5: JJ McCarty was going to beat him out two years ago, right,
- 13:59Speaker 5: and played pretty good in that preseason, But he has
- 14:01Speaker 5: the injury. Sam gets the opportunity, he's got coaching, he's
- 14:05Speaker 5: got players around him, he's got a good defense on
- 14:07Speaker 5: the other side, and he was finally able to settle
- 14:09Speaker 5: in and be himself. And so I would say obviously
- 14:12Speaker 5: him going to Seattle, the fact that Kubiak was there,
- 14:15Speaker 5: who is the guy there in San Francisco with him
- 14:17Speaker 5: in that year where maybe he kind of could catch
- 14:19Speaker 5: his breath and learn how to play the game the
- 14:21Speaker 5: right way. I think that was a huge factor to
- 14:23Speaker 5: his success this season.
- 14:24Speaker 4: I love it.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I love it for him.
- 14:26Speaker 5: I love it for guys like Baker Mayfield who go
- 14:28Speaker 5: and find their way or Daniel Jones. I mean, maybe
- 14:30Speaker 5: mac Jones is now the next in line to do that,
- 14:33Speaker 5: goes out and kind of reclaims his career in San
- 14:35Speaker 5: Francisco with Kyle, But that system is built to really
- 14:39Speaker 5: make it easy on the quarterback. It's run the football,
- 14:43Speaker 5: it's run play action and get chunk plays.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It's run boots, all things that Darnold is really good at.
- 14:47Speaker 5: And by the while, you ad JSN, who, in my opinion,
- 14:50Speaker 5: is probably the most well rounded receiver in the league
- 14:53Speaker 5: right now. He can play inside, he can play outside
- 14:55Speaker 5: man coverage, his own coverage. I loved how Brady had
- 14:58Speaker 5: during the broadcast last week, talked about why he made
- 15:01Speaker 5: him so good. He's like, he's like he's a figure skater.
- 15:03Speaker 5: He can go left right, his his shoulder plane never dips. Like, yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 5: this guy is running these routes. He's so smooth that
- 15:10Speaker 5: these defensive backs they don't know which way he's going.
- 15:12Speaker 5: And I just saw Ocho Cinco here and I got
- 15:15Speaker 5: to spend time with Ocho uh in twenty eleven. And
- 15:18Speaker 5: when you when you talk about a guy who can
- 15:20Speaker 5: go full speed and he can run a comeback, he
- 15:22Speaker 5: can run an in cut, he can run a curl,
- 15:24Speaker 5: he can run a post like that becomes really hard
- 15:26Speaker 5: on the defensive backs.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Wow, definitely.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Uh.
- 15:30Speaker 6: You know, listening to Brady talk about Jackson Smith and
- 15:33Speaker 6: Jigbit and you think about their offense. They get him
- 15:37Speaker 6: the ball all the time, and like a guy that
- 15:40Speaker 6: you're like, well, there's the other I mean, yeah, she
- 15:42Speaker 6: heat is kind of like the deep threat there. So
- 15:44Speaker 6: they do such a good job of getting one guy
- 15:47Speaker 6: the ball because when you look at their offense, it's
- 15:48Speaker 6: not this offense it's got like much like in Philly
- 15:51Speaker 6: where you're like, well, how do you take Aeric Brown?
- 15:53Speaker 6: What do you do with Smith? And then you got
- 15:54Speaker 6: Saquan And that's why it's very unique that their offense
- 15:58Speaker 6: is able to do what they do with really one
- 16:01Speaker 6: big weapon.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think Kubiak the way he uses them,
- 16:04Speaker 5: like the touchdown in the in the Championshi game where
- 16:06Speaker 5: he motions them to the backfield and now all of
- 16:08Speaker 5: a sudden, and you know they had a stack receivers
- 16:11Speaker 5: over here to the left. Now when you come to
- 16:13Speaker 5: that backfield and their stack, you know that that triggers
- 16:16Speaker 5: an adjustment and cover four to box and that's where
- 16:18Speaker 5: you know they make this box with the defenders and
- 16:20Speaker 5: now you get him out of the backfield in the
- 16:22Speaker 5: middle of the box running the flag.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And it's it's such a good, you know, well well
- 16:26Speaker 2: designed plays.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I saw that play just to show you how sick
- 16:29Speaker 4: I am. Brian, you know what? You know what play?
- 16:31Speaker 4: You know what play that popped upmediately into my head?
- 16:33Speaker 7: Which one when Kyle in twenty sixteen was the OC
- 16:37Speaker 7: for the Falcons.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Falcons, yep, and he threw a touchdown against Seattle to
- 16:40Speaker 4: Tevin Coleman.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you know he ran the flag out of the back.
- 16:43Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, exactly because I played for Kyle the
- 16:45Speaker 5: next year. It wasxact same play. Yeah, exactly, exact same play,
- 16:49Speaker 5: but Tevin Coleman was actually running back in JS as
- 16:51Speaker 5: a receiver.
- 16:52Speaker 2: So but I concept of the exact.
- 16:54Speaker 8: Saying yeah, yeah, yeah, we got.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I gotta tell you Donald.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, well, first and foremost, I do want
- 17:12Speaker 5: to say this, and and and I feel like it's
- 17:14Speaker 5: not being talked about a lot. He led the league
- 17:18Speaker 5: and quarterbacks in turnovers this year fourteen interceptions.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I think it was what six MS lost.
- 17:25Speaker 5: That's so there's a recency buas he hasn't had a
- 17:28Speaker 5: game like that in a while. But in a way,
- 17:32Speaker 5: you know, that could be the downfall of the Seahawks
- 17:34Speaker 5: in this game.
- 17:34Speaker 2: If the Patriots can stop the run.
- 17:36Speaker 5: Early, take away some of the easy boots and the
- 17:39Speaker 5: play actions and turn this into the drop back game
- 17:43Speaker 5: by Seattle. And we know when he's faced pressure, it's
- 17:46Speaker 5: either a turnover or a big play.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Like it's fifty to fifty, you don't know what you're
- 17:50Speaker 2: gonna get.
- 17:50Speaker 5: And so I have to imagine that the defensive game
- 17:53Speaker 5: plan for the Patriots is to make Donald beat you
- 17:56Speaker 5: from the pocket.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Don't let him get out.
- 17:57Speaker 5: He's he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league
- 18:00Speaker 5: throwing on the run outside the pocket. I mean, he's athletic,
- 18:02Speaker 5: he's got a hell of an arm yep. You got
- 18:04Speaker 5: to contain him. You got to make sure that you
- 18:06Speaker 5: push the middle of the pocket with good rush lanes
- 18:09Speaker 5: and try to throw make them beat you from the Well.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Well, it's funny you say that about stopping the run,
- 18:13Speaker 7: because one thing that because of Rabel being with Bill
- 18:16Speaker 7: for so many years that they've been able to do
- 18:18Speaker 7: the Seahawks against other teams, which I would imagine the Patriots.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Will stop is setting the edge, because.
- 18:24Speaker 7: The Seahawks have been able to get to the edge
- 18:27Speaker 7: a lot in recent weeks, and I can't imagine that
- 18:30Speaker 7: the Patriots are.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Going to allow that to happen.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I think just based on.
- 18:33Speaker 6: Now.
- 18:33Speaker 5: I'd never played with Rabel, but I came in right
- 18:35Speaker 5: after he left, and when the one thing I can
- 18:38Speaker 5: remember Bill saying to the defense all the time, set
- 18:40Speaker 5: the edge right, and no one set the edge better
- 18:43Speaker 5: than Mike Rabel, right. And so you know, as a player,
- 18:45Speaker 5: if he did something really well, what is he gonna
- 18:47Speaker 5: want his team?
- 18:48Speaker 4: Right?
- 18:49Speaker 2: So I think that's the thing.
- 18:50Speaker 5: You know, because they run a ton of outside zone, right,
- 18:53Speaker 5: and so having been in that West Coast system, everything
- 18:56Speaker 5: is off of the outside zone, and what they do
- 18:58Speaker 5: really well is and I can hear Cole in a
- 19:00Speaker 5: run game install right now saying, you go to the
- 19:02Speaker 5: D gap. If they give you the D gap, you
- 19:04Speaker 5: go around the edge. If they if they set the edge, now,
- 19:07Speaker 5: you go to the C gap. You keep working. And
- 19:09Speaker 5: he goes, we may hit the backside B gap, but
- 19:13Speaker 5: I want to hit it all the way to the
- 19:14Speaker 5: at the numbers right. And so I think the Patriots,
- 19:17Speaker 5: you're right, They're going to set the edge, and then
- 19:18Speaker 5: everybody inside is going to have to have gap integrity
- 19:21Speaker 5: and not try to overplay it because that's when Walker
- 19:24Speaker 5: will cut it.
- 19:24Speaker 7: Back and then the linebackers can't over exactly they have
- 19:27Speaker 7: to stay.
- 19:27Speaker 5: Yep, there are that West Coast outside zone scheme. All
- 19:31Speaker 5: they're banking on is one guy getting out of his
- 19:33Speaker 5: gap correct and if the back reads it correctly, and
- 19:36Speaker 5: all of a sudden, the Mike linebackers supposed to have
- 19:38Speaker 5: the front side a gap and he overplays to the
- 19:40Speaker 5: to the B or the C. That creates that crease.
- 19:43Speaker 5: And that's what those guys they are hunting for that NonStop.
- 19:46Speaker 2: That's what they do.
- 19:47Speaker 5: That's where Kyle or Clinton in this case, is going
- 19:49Speaker 5: to watch the tape and say, who's the guy who
- 19:51Speaker 5: doesn't have gap integrity? All right, then maybe that's going
- 19:54Speaker 5: to be the place where you cut this back and
- 19:55Speaker 5: hit him.
- 19:56Speaker 4: And you're exactly right, because I know that's the way
- 19:58Speaker 4: they teach it.
- 19:58Speaker 7: You start outside d and if it's closed off, you work,
- 20:01Speaker 7: you keep working one gap inside exactly.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Yep.
- 20:08Speaker 7: I would say Donald struggles at times when the pocket
- 20:10Speaker 7: gets really muddied and you can see him speed up
- 20:13Speaker 7: his body. You can almost it's not an X and
- 20:15Speaker 7: no point, but you can see it.
- 20:16Speaker 4: He speeds up.
- 20:17Speaker 7: And so what happens is his mental process speeds up
- 20:20Speaker 7: and his physical process speeds up.
- 20:22Speaker 4: And that's when he'll throw.
- 20:23Speaker 7: Balls, he'll lose a little bit of ball location and
- 20:26Speaker 7: he doesn't see it exactly the way you should see it.
- 20:29Speaker 6: So has he taken a step from Minnesota to Seattle
- 20:33Speaker 6: or has that changed a.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Little bit for him?
- 20:35Speaker 6: Because everyone was like, well, Minnesota won fourteen games, Donald, right,
- 20:40Speaker 6: but and then and then the one game. It's almost
- 20:43Speaker 6: like people are judging him off that one game has made.
- 20:45Speaker 7: The Well, that's because of his history, so correct when he,
- 20:48Speaker 7: as Brian said, if he has the bad throw or whatever,
- 20:51Speaker 7: people are gonna go there you go.
- 20:52Speaker 4: We're waiting for exactly.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I mean, that was the story of my career.
- 20:54Speaker 5: I mean, you know when I would play well, everyone
- 20:57Speaker 5: wi always say well, let's see, let's see, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 5: and eventually you have a bad game, and then they're like, well,
- 21:02Speaker 5: that's why he was undrafted, that's why he was cut. Like,
- 21:05Speaker 5: I don't think anybody should really be judged off.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Of one game.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I thought, what Donald did?
- 21:10Speaker 5: I think I thought Minnesota was crazy to let him
- 21:12Speaker 5: walk out of the door, not knowing what you had
- 21:14Speaker 5: in JJ McCarthy. I thought it was absolutely right just
- 21:18Speaker 5: to not even offer him a deal, just say thanks
- 21:20Speaker 5: Sam for everything.
- 21:21Speaker 4: You've done. Best of luck to you.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I just thought it was I thought it was crazy
- 21:24Speaker 5: and sure enough. I mean, they have to be sick
- 21:26Speaker 5: to their stomachs this week. They have to because they
- 21:28Speaker 5: had a team that was ready to win.
- 21:30Speaker 4: No question, no question.
- 21:31Speaker 7: But I think, Adam, in response to your question, that's
- 21:33Speaker 7: where Donald does have issues when when everything gets speeded
- 21:37Speaker 7: up mentally and physically. Yeh, some quarterbacks, you know, some
- 21:46Speaker 7: quarterbacks though, that's the way they play it.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I mean Brady's feet would get stuck too.
- 21:49Speaker 2: You want to be balanced. You want to be balanced
- 21:51Speaker 2: in the pocket, right right, right. But we were talking
- 21:57Speaker 2: about Greg. I remember getting to the Patriots.
- 21:59Speaker 5: I remember watching Brady in practice and take a drop
- 22:01Speaker 5: and literally just stopt.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I was like, I've never seen this before.
- 22:05Speaker 5: But for him, it was about having a base to
- 22:07Speaker 5: be able to throw the football. And he could throw
- 22:09Speaker 5: an eighteen yard comeback that way, he could throw a
- 22:12Speaker 5: fifty yard post that way, he could throw the duke
- 22:14Speaker 5: out over the ball. It was just his way of
- 22:15Speaker 5: getting his feet in the ground and not being But I.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Think what you're trying to talk about with Donold is
- 22:20Speaker 2: it gets a little choppy. Yes, it starts to see.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You know, all right, it wasn't there. What do I
- 22:24Speaker 2: do now?
- 22:24Speaker 5: And I think that's and as much as I'm happy
- 22:27Speaker 5: for Sam, I think this game will come down to
- 22:30Speaker 5: how does he handle all those situations?
- 22:32Speaker 4: All right?
- 22:33Speaker 6: It's football far powered by the Inside of the Birds podcast.
