- 0:00Speaker 1: I feel like I'm always conscious of whether or not
- 0:02Speaker 1: people are assuming things of me, thinking I'm not athletic,
- 0:05Speaker 1: thinking I'm not like I don't have to train as
- 0:08Speaker 1: hard because I just throw. People just think I just
- 0:11Speaker 1: show up and I throw a big metal ball around,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and I'm like, No, I run and I jump and
- 0:17Speaker 1: I do things. You're like almost insecure, and I feel
- 0:19Speaker 1: like I'm not alone in that or throwers. Sometimes I
- 0:22Speaker 1: feel insecure about whether or not they're looking at us
- 0:24Speaker 1: like athletes.
- 0:40Speaker 2: What's going on? Everyone, Emily A body Here.

- 1:07Speaker 3: your own big potential and of course have some fun
- 1:11Speaker 3: along the way.
- 1:13Speaker 2: First and foremost, I know my voice is a little hoarse.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I've been out here in Budapest cheering at the World
- 1:20Speaker 3: Athletic championships, which leads me in to how rad and
- 1:25Speaker 3: exciting today's guest is.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I am chatting with Chase Ealy.
- 1:30Speaker 3: She is a world champion shot putter and truly such
- 1:35Speaker 3: an amazing human, truly hilarious. She talks to me today
- 1:39Speaker 3: about how she got into shotput clearly not the most
- 1:42Speaker 3: common sport, She's the first shot putter I've had on
- 1:45Speaker 3: the show, and how that choice was heavily rooted in
- 1:48Speaker 3: the conversations that she had surrounding her own body in sport.
- 1:53Speaker 3: She confesses that she dealt a lot with her own
- 1:57Speaker 3: perception of her body both in high school and in college,
- 2:00Speaker 3: negative body shaming and being made to feel that she
- 2:04Speaker 3: wasn't a true.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Athlete because of her size.
- 2:07Speaker 3: She also stresses the importance of being mindful about the
- 2:10Speaker 3: people closest to her in our conversation today, and spills
- 2:14Speaker 3: what it was like for her to sign her first
- 2:16Speaker 3: Nike contract. She also chats about her hopes for young
- 2:19Speaker 3: women in sport moving forward, how she feels about the
- 2:22Speaker 3: way that women of all shapes and sizes are being
- 2:25Speaker 3: conveyed in the media today, and also what she's truly focused.
- 2:31Speaker 2: On at this point in her career.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Chase will be going after another world championship title this week,
- 2:40Speaker 3: so best.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Of luck to my girl.
- 2:42Speaker 3: You know I'm cheering you on, and I'm sure the
- 2:45Speaker 3: entire hurdle community is too. Make sure you're following along

- 3:14Speaker 3: with that, let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Today.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I'm sitting down with Chase Eely. She is a shot putter,
- 3:32Speaker 3: she's a world champ in twenty twenty two.
- 3:34Speaker 2: How we do it today?
- 3:35Speaker 4: Doing great? Thank you for having me.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I'm so amped to have you here. I love athlete stories.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But I think it's always really awesome when we have
- 3:43Speaker 3: the opportunity to talk about maybe a modality that people
- 3:48Speaker 3: don't know as much about.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Here on Hurdle, I talk to everyone from God.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I mean, we're talking to a track and field athlete
- 3:54Speaker 3: to swimmers, gymnasts, you name it.
- 3:56Speaker 2: So you're my first shot putter on the show.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's great. I kind of feel special. We
- 4:03Speaker 1: don't always get the most loved so sometimes it's like, yes.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yes, I know that when you got into shot put,
- 4:10Speaker 3: you were a multi sport athlete on the track, what
- 4:13Speaker 3: neede you decide to choose shotput over some of the
- 4:16Speaker 3: more conventional options like sprinting.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It all kind of came down to my college recruiting,
- 4:20Speaker 1: so like I just remember like multi event coaches coming
- 4:25Speaker 1: at me more so about like what we were going
- 4:27Speaker 1: to do to change my body composition and stuff and
- 4:30Speaker 1: like lead me into like becoming a multi and then
- 4:34Speaker 1: sprint coaches kind of had the same kind of go
- 4:37Speaker 1: about things as well. And then when I talked to
- 4:39Speaker 1: throws coaches, they were always more curious about They would
- 4:42Speaker 1: come to like my other athletic events, like my volleyball
- 4:46Speaker 1: games and stuff to visit me, and they were way
- 4:48Speaker 1: more worried about my athleticism and they never talked to
- 4:50Speaker 1: me about like my body. And I think that now
- 4:53Speaker 1: that I look back on it, I think that's what
- 4:55Speaker 1: really attracted me to throwing and those coaches rather than
- 5:00Speaker 1: the people who wanted me to do this, that and
- 5:02Speaker 1: the other to get my body to do something.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously you're a human verse before you're
- 5:09Speaker 3: an athlete.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's so interesting, especially at that age.
- 5:13Speaker 3: How did it make you feel when that was the
- 5:16Speaker 3: first topic of conversation, like, Hi, nice to meet you.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Let's talk about your body composition?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I was always like a bigger sprinter
- 5:24Speaker 1: and stuff, and it was it always broke my heart
- 5:26Speaker 1: kind of like some of the things that they'd write
- 5:29Speaker 1: about me in the papers and stuff. So I think
- 5:30Speaker 1: it really like it messed with my self esteem even more.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And I remember one of the most iconic lines was
- 5:38Speaker 1: they called me a Mac truck with a Portion engine,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and the guy was like really proud of that line.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And I remember telling my mom, like at the end,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I was like, I'm a girl, Like I'm a teenage girl,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Like I don't really want to be called that, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Like I don't think you meant it maliciously, but like
- 5:55Speaker 1: stuff like that really I think affected my body image
- 5:59Speaker 1: when I was young.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Totally understandable.
- 6:02Speaker 3: How could it not a Mac truck with a Porsche
- 6:05Speaker 3: engine I'm like sitting here, my mouth kind of a gape,
- 6:10Speaker 3: like how could any And I'm assuming this is like
- 6:13Speaker 3: a male journalist hiding behind his little computer.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Totally, and I think he genuinely thought like it was
- 6:20Speaker 1: a compliment. And I'm like, just use your brain for
- 6:23Speaker 1: five minutes. Like I'm a high school girl and you're
- 6:26Speaker 1: basically saying I'm huge, but I have a good engine, Like.
- 6:29Speaker 4: That's crazy to me.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It always affected me, and I think having like sports
- 6:34Speaker 1: professionals like throws coaches, when they were addressing me and
- 6:37Speaker 1: talking to me, they never talked about my body once,
- 6:40Speaker 1: even to this day, Like when I talk about weight
- 6:43Speaker 1: goals and stuff with my coach now, it always comes
- 6:46Speaker 1: from a place of like speed and movement, like how
- 6:48Speaker 1: do I want to move in the ring? How do
- 6:50Speaker 1: I feel here and there? It's never like your body
- 6:52Speaker 1: needs to be this, like even if I lose like
- 6:54Speaker 1: three kilos, Like I just lost three kilos and I
- 6:56Speaker 1: was like, boom, I feel better and he's like cool,
- 6:58Speaker 1: that's fine, yeah, like wear your abs and stuff.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, I mean these days, especially, I feel
- 7:06Speaker 3: like talking about size is so taboo. It's so interesting
- 7:09Speaker 3: as well to think about you being younger, were you
- 7:12Speaker 3: dissuaded at all to be a sprinter because of your
- 7:16Speaker 3: size at that time? And maybe just give a little
- 7:18Speaker 3: bit of context, because I feel personally these days, even
- 7:21Speaker 3: as a non professional athlete in my mid thirties, sometimes
- 7:24Speaker 3: I feel, you know, dissuaded from showing up to the
- 7:27Speaker 3: track in my body.
- 7:29Speaker 1: It's funny to say that, so like, sometimes this just
- 7:32Speaker 1: happened to me in Germany. I went to this meeting.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We pulled up and I was in the car, like
- 7:37Speaker 1: the transport car with a high jumper and another maybe
- 7:41Speaker 1: a middle distance runner, it's a runner. They were small,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and we pulled up and I remember the people came
- 7:46Speaker 1: up to me and us in the car and they said, oh, like,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you guys ready and I said yeah, and then they
- 7:51Speaker 1: were like, I bet you're ready for dinner and pointed
- 7:54Speaker 1: at me.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I was like, what is this And I literally went
- 7:59Speaker 4: I'm not really bad group of thank you, but I
- 8:03Speaker 4: literally was like, why would you say that to me?
- 8:06Speaker 1: And I find it, like it's so disconcerting sometimes, like
- 8:10Speaker 1: the way they talk about it is still in the
- 8:11Speaker 1: media because again I don't think they mean it maliciously,
- 8:14Speaker 1: but they'll say things like you know, like be careful.
- 8:16Speaker 1: All the shot putters will eat all the food and
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'm like, no, like stop, Like there's just this misconception.
- 8:22Speaker 1: It's like really irritating, but yeah, it kind of hurts.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And like I was looking at another sports ad I
- 8:28Speaker 1: won't be specific the other day, and I was thinking,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I keep seeing like plus size representation in sports ads,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but they're always like they're typically by themselves, but when
- 8:38Speaker 1: you see like the group sports ads, but it would
- 8:40Speaker 1: be like all these people kind of like together, you'll
- 8:44Speaker 1: never see it there. And I was looking at one
- 8:46Speaker 1: the other day and I kind of was like, man,
- 8:47Speaker 1: that kind of sucks, like because when I was younger,
- 8:50Speaker 1: it would have been nice to see someone that looked
- 8:52Speaker 1: like me trying to run or doing something.
- 8:54Speaker 3: But when you first started, did you feel dissuaded from
- 8:57Speaker 3: showing up to the track because you weren't seeing women
- 8:59Speaker 3: that looked like you in conventional media?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Oh?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah for sure.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And I think that was what I was thinking earlier,
- 9:05Speaker 1: is like when I remember seeing that ad and like
- 9:07Speaker 1: I kind of brought me back where I was like, oh,
- 9:10Speaker 1: like I feel like we take those steps, but sometimes
- 9:12Speaker 1: they seem like there's like a swing and a miss.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Sometimes when it comes to like we're representing all and
- 9:17Speaker 1: it's like yeah, but like sometimes I don't feel like
- 9:20Speaker 1: it's it's always fully realized as well, and there's always
- 9:24Speaker 1: like one way to look at like sports bodies, and
- 9:27Speaker 1: so it's always hard to like show up to the track,
- 9:29Speaker 1: show up to meets and stuff. I feel like I'm
- 9:31Speaker 1: always conscious of whether or not people are assuming things
- 9:34Speaker 1: of me, thinking I'm not athletic, thinking I'm not like
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't have to train as hard because I just
- 9:40Speaker 1: throw what you hear a lot like people just think
- 9:42Speaker 1: I just show up and I throw a big metal
- 9:45Speaker 1: ball around, and I'm like, no, I run and I
- 9:48Speaker 1: jump and I do things. But like, yeah, you're you're
- 9:51Speaker 1: like almost insecure, and I feel like I'm not alone
- 9:54Speaker 1: in that or throwers. Sometimes I feel insecure about like
- 9:57Speaker 1: whether or not they're looking at us like athletes.
- 10:00Speaker 3: It must take a lot of unnecessary energy away from
- 10:04Speaker 3: you when your head is there, when you'd rather be
- 10:07Speaker 3: paying attention and giving that energy to your sport, to
- 10:10Speaker 3: your event.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Oh.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Fully, there's like the self consciousness that I feel sometimes,
- 10:15Speaker 1: like in the WRM of Baria and other things, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: think definitely takes away sometimes some of the mental energy
- 10:22Speaker 1: I need to be spending on myself, but I'll be
- 10:24Speaker 1: warming up and like I just I don't know. I'm
- 10:28Speaker 1: always worried that people will see me running and stuff
- 10:30Speaker 1: and be like judging me and that it might not
- 10:34Speaker 1: be true. But like those things are like in my
- 10:37Speaker 1: head now they're like ingrained.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 3: So I know that you have worked with sports psychologists
- 10:43Speaker 3: over your time thus far as an athlete, it has
- 10:46Speaker 3: this been an area that you have worked with worked
- 10:50Speaker 3: with them on.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It's kind of funny that you asked that, because I
- 10:55Speaker 1: feel like I haven't really brought it up much ever,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and I think that's because I'm honestly, I kind of
- 11:01Speaker 1: I don't want to seem like weak in that regard,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and I feel like that's weird for me because I've
- 11:05Speaker 1: been I'm usually pretty open, like especially with my sports
- 11:08Speaker 1: psych and she she's great, but I think sometimes like
- 11:12Speaker 1: you hold back a little bit when you're talking to anybody,
- 11:16Speaker 1: even like you're psychologist or whatever, because like, I don't
- 11:20Speaker 1: want to seem like I'm I'm so worried about that
- 11:23Speaker 1: because I feel like it might look like I'm not
- 11:26Speaker 1: the confident athlete that I know I am, and sometimes
- 11:30Speaker 1: that can be like really vulnerable, I think, and it's
- 11:32Speaker 1: kind of like a worry. Also, my sports psych is
- 11:34Speaker 1: a runner, so I don't think she'd understand me.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Re evaluates completely the woman that she's working with as
- 11:45Speaker 3: are sports psychologists. First and foremost, thank you for sharing
- 11:48Speaker 3: this with me and in turn the listeners, because it's
- 11:52Speaker 3: very relatable. It's as though we think that if we
- 11:57Speaker 3: just shove something to the side sometimes then me it
- 12:00Speaker 3: won't come up and we can focus on these other things.
- 12:02Speaker 3: But what happens in the act of the shoving is
- 12:06Speaker 3: that that really just gets under and prevents us from
- 12:10Speaker 3: focusing on what we really want to focus on because
- 12:12Speaker 3: we're not handling our other baggage.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, totally for sure. That's very me, especially when it
- 12:18Speaker 1: comes that issue. But I'm finding myself now and like
- 12:21Speaker 1: doing these things, Like, I'm finding it easier now to
- 12:24Speaker 1: kind of open up because every time I've opened up
- 12:26Speaker 1: about things like, it's usually followed with people being like,
- 12:29Speaker 1: oh me too, or I'm so glad somebody said this,
- 12:33Speaker 1: like and so it's it's kind of pushed me a
- 12:35Speaker 1: little more and more like to start talking more about
- 12:37Speaker 1: those vulnerable things, which is why I like, even now
- 12:40Speaker 1: it's like, oh, like it's almost like it just like
- 12:43Speaker 1: can do it. It's weird, Like just now it's like, oh,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I just said that.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Cool?
- 12:47Speaker 3: How does that make you feel when you're talking about
- 12:50Speaker 3: it more in the process of talking about it before
- 12:53Speaker 3: you receive that external validation or feedback.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Sometimes you just need to put things out there, don't you. Like,
- 12:59Speaker 1: sometimes you stuff in I think, and it just needs
- 13:02Speaker 1: to be said to even start like kind of fixing
- 13:05Speaker 1: it and turning those gears of you being like, oh hmm,
- 13:08Speaker 1: now that I say it out loud, I'm kind of
- 13:09Speaker 1: like I'm kind of looking at it in a different
- 13:12Speaker 1: light already, Like now that I said it, I was like, oh,
- 13:16Speaker 1: that explains certain things that like maybe I wasn't quite
- 13:19Speaker 1: attributing to that as a reason.
- 13:21Speaker 2: For totally and like just learning about yourself.
- 13:24Speaker 3: We talked at the top of this about you being
- 13:27Speaker 3: a multi sport athlete and leaning into shotput because it
- 13:31Speaker 3: was more about your athleticism and less about people talking
- 13:35Speaker 3: about your body. When you make the choice to lean
- 13:38Speaker 3: fully into shotput, what happens for you.
- 13:41Speaker 1: So I think, like when I went to school, and
- 13:44Speaker 1: stuff like honestly, it was like a blessing and a
- 13:47Speaker 1: curse in that regard. So like I felt like from
- 13:50Speaker 1: the group I was in, you're surrounded by people who
- 13:52Speaker 1: are like kind of in the same boat as you,
- 13:53Speaker 1: which is great, but it was kind of the same
- 13:56Speaker 1: thing in respect of like the other sports around, like
- 13:58Speaker 1: in the college setting, because we're all around each other.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And I think that a lot of that, like that,
- 14:04Speaker 1: that self criticism and stuff started like leaking in in
- 14:07Speaker 1: college mainly because I felt better about being addressed as
- 14:11Speaker 1: an athlete. But then I was back in the boat
- 14:12Speaker 1: where like people were looking at me like what do
- 14:15Speaker 1: you even do? And you're like ough, Like like they
- 14:18Speaker 1: look at you like you don't long and in the
- 14:20Speaker 1: sports spaces because you don't necessarily look like a traditional
- 14:24Speaker 1: I did air quotes like people can see, but like
- 14:26Speaker 1: a traditional athlete would look. And I think that that
- 14:31Speaker 1: kind of started the ball rolling. And I definitely had,
- 14:33Speaker 1: like I think my biggest self image issues were in
- 14:36Speaker 1: college for sure, Like I struggled with it quite heavily.
- 14:40Speaker 3: And in that struggle, if you don't mind sharing, what
- 14:43Speaker 3: did that look like for you?
- 14:45Speaker 1: I definitely like I never talked about this either, But
- 14:48Speaker 1: like there was definitely some disordered eating in my life
- 14:50Speaker 1: for sure, and I think a lot of that stemmed
- 14:53Speaker 1: from like being with it was.
- 14:55Speaker 4: It's like, you go up to the next level.
- 14:57Speaker 1: So I went from like high school and I was
- 15:00Speaker 1: quite good and all this stuff and those things were
- 15:01Speaker 1: kind of poking at me. Then you go to the
- 15:03Speaker 1: next level, and it's like it's way more obvious, so
- 15:06Speaker 1: like now there's pictures of me, Now there's people writing articles.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Like now it's a bit more like you go up
- 15:11Speaker 1: to the next level, so it's a bit more in
- 15:12Speaker 1: your face, like you're really being like assessed even more.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And I think like I started like really struggling for
- 15:21Speaker 1: my first two years of college. It got better after
- 15:23Speaker 1: like the end of my junior year, but my first
- 15:26Speaker 1: two years of college was definitely like a lot of
- 15:28Speaker 1: like struggle with myself as a person, and I think
- 15:32Speaker 1: that that was from me losing track of like person,
- 15:35Speaker 1: athlete thing in all of that body.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I mention, what would you attribute to helping it get
- 15:41Speaker 3: better come your junior year.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I left like a really toxic relationship at the end
- 15:46Speaker 1: of the year, and I got a new coach that
- 15:48Speaker 1: was coming in and I'm still close with him to
- 15:52Speaker 1: this day. He was just like really good for me,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I think overall, and I think that's really what it
- 15:57Speaker 1: kind of started, the ball rolling on me making or
- 16:00Speaker 1: I surround myself with the right people. And it took
- 16:02Speaker 1: like a lot of steps and stuff. But like I think,
- 16:06Speaker 1: starting at the beginning of this year is when I
- 16:08Speaker 1: would say, is when I finally have like the perfect
- 16:11Speaker 1: like perfect like group of people around me, because there's
- 16:15Speaker 1: always the one that sneaks in, you know, Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 2: No, totally understandable.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And also you really painting this picture that that wasn't
- 16:24Speaker 3: something that happened overnight. Right we we're talking between college
- 16:28Speaker 3: and now you're twenty nine. Now, yeah, okay, you're twenty nine.
- 16:32Speaker 3: That's eight years of your life where you were homing
- 16:35Speaker 3: in on the right community that supports you and makes
- 16:40Speaker 3: you feel like your best self, and that is something
- 16:43Speaker 3: that does take time.
- 16:45Speaker 1: That's what people like I would want people to know
- 16:48Speaker 1: the most out of like my story for sure, like
- 16:51Speaker 1: because I've had some huge up and downs like throughout
- 16:54Speaker 1: my career, and I think the one thing I would
- 16:55Speaker 1: say is like, it's a what do they say, it's
- 16:58Speaker 1: not a sprint?
- 16:59Speaker 2: It's a it's of sprend It's Americas a marathon.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that holds really true to like that kind of thing,
- 17:05Speaker 1: because to me, I thought I would try and like
- 17:09Speaker 1: be like, oh, this is perfect. You know, you fake
- 17:11Speaker 1: it till you make it sometimes because you want it
- 17:12Speaker 1: to be perfect. And I think I finally realized, like
- 17:16Speaker 1: it's okay to like take your time and assess things
- 17:19Speaker 1: and determine relationships and stuff like You're not gonna know
- 17:22Speaker 1: whether or not someone's good for you like in two minutes.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So it's like it's fine that, like it takes you
- 17:28Speaker 1: a while to get where you need to be. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: think people want to be in their perfect place in
- 17:34Speaker 1: their early twenties, and I'm like, it's never gonna happen.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Just accept that totally.
- 17:39Speaker 3: And So you talked about some of these really difficult
- 17:42Speaker 3: moments that you've.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Had throughout your career.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I know, first and foremost, I mean, you had been
- 17:48Speaker 3: a favorite going into the Tokyo Olympics for qualifications. Talk
- 17:53Speaker 3: to us about what went down and how you were
- 17:56Speaker 3: able to come back from that hurdle to get to
- 17:59Speaker 3: where you there are now.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was a brutal time. I got long
- 18:04Speaker 1: COVID at the was at the end of twenty twenty
- 18:09Speaker 1: in the beginning of twenty twenty one, and it made
- 18:12Speaker 1: me really ill and I lost like I think it
- 18:16Speaker 1: was like sixty eight pounds in three months or something crazy,
- 18:19Speaker 1: something very not healthy. I should have I could have died.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And I think as an athlete, regardless of strength athlete
- 18:27Speaker 1: or not, like just losing your body composition and not
- 18:31Speaker 1: knowing what body you're in is a problem. And that's
- 18:34Speaker 1: where I was, and I think I never mentally like
- 18:38Speaker 1: regained myself again after that. I struggled for a long time.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Mentally.
- 18:42Speaker 1: There was like physical signs like where I would still
- 18:44Speaker 1: do some crazy things in training and stuff, but like
- 18:47Speaker 1: my head wasn't there. And I think that was when
- 18:49Speaker 1: I really started to like kind of dig down and
- 18:52Speaker 1: I stopped talking to my sports psych as much, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: I kind of went into this hole in this darkness,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and then I kind of started to come out of
- 18:59Speaker 1: it right before trials and I was like okay, and
- 19:02Speaker 1: like I can do this. I'm this, I'm that, I'm
- 19:04Speaker 1: I'm training fine now, like I'm putting on a little
- 19:07Speaker 1: more weight, like we can do this. And then the
- 19:10Speaker 1: fake it till you make it that I was definitely
- 19:12Speaker 1: trying to do, like all came to a head like
- 19:15Speaker 1: on that night. And the problem with like the USA
- 19:19Speaker 1: is at Olympic Trials, like you have to be in
- 19:21Speaker 1: your a game. It's not just I gotta go to
- 19:25Speaker 1: qualify because I'm the only one. It's it's you have
- 19:27Speaker 1: to be there, like especially in like shot put, like
- 19:30Speaker 1: we're the best in the world men and women in shotput.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And I think it just it didn't work, and it
- 19:38Speaker 1: broke my heart, and I remember crying all night and
- 19:42Speaker 1: I didn't really call anyone.
- 19:43Speaker 4: I didn't talk to anymore. I just kind of cried.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And then after that I kind of picked myself up
- 19:49Speaker 1: by the bootstraps and I was like, okay, like never again,
- 19:51Speaker 1: It's what I kept saying, like never again, am I
- 19:52Speaker 1: not going to make a team. Never again, am I
- 19:55Speaker 1: gonna like get this low? And I just started like
- 19:59Speaker 1: working really hard. Remember I threw quite far. By the
- 20:03Speaker 1: end of the year. I threw like the fourth furthest
- 20:05Speaker 1: throw of the year or something like that, which sucks
- 20:07Speaker 1: when you didn't even go to the the major competition
- 20:10Speaker 1: of the year. And then after that I ended up
- 20:13Speaker 1: going to the UK, and that's kind of where it
- 20:15Speaker 1: all came to a head. When I got a new
- 20:17Speaker 1: coach and my now fiance and all that stuff. It
- 20:21Speaker 1: was like this like relief of maybe I'm not throwing
- 20:25Speaker 1: the best right now, but at least I'm like happy,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and then happy happy me as a person turned into
- 20:31Speaker 1: like successful athlete like real fast.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, wow, thank you for sharing that. There's so
- 20:38Speaker 2: much power into things that you said.
- 20:41Speaker 3: First and foremost not knowing what body you're in, like
- 20:45Speaker 3: not having the awareness, and I think that freeze in
- 20:47Speaker 3: itself what body you're in is so interesting because it
- 20:50Speaker 3: speaks to what we were talking about just before, knowing
- 20:55Speaker 3: how you feel your best right and it's not based
- 20:59Speaker 3: on what anybody else has to say or the number
- 21:02Speaker 3: on a scale. It is how do I feel in
- 21:04Speaker 3: my body right now and what body is the right
- 21:07Speaker 3: body for me in this moment and that can have
- 21:09Speaker 3: and flow over time.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I think I've had a lot of different successful bodies,
- 21:14Speaker 1: Like in twenty nineteen, I was definitely like a different weight,
- 21:18Speaker 1: body composition all that, and that's fine, Like I don't
- 21:21Speaker 1: look back and gough like, but that was I was
- 21:23Speaker 1: starting successful then and then now, like last year, even
- 21:28Speaker 1: I was a completely different body composition than I am now,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and it's all been like kind of too adjust to
- 21:33Speaker 1: my technique. And I don't really look at it as
- 21:36Speaker 1: like how I want to look. Everything is about like
- 21:39Speaker 1: the event, Like I am literally only worried about like
- 21:43Speaker 1: how I throw. I could care less about like how
- 21:45Speaker 1: I look anymore. And I know how I need to feel,
- 21:47Speaker 1: like you said, you know how you need to feel
- 21:49Speaker 1: like and I know exactly when I'm throwing. If I'm
- 21:52Speaker 1: a little too heavy, I'll just take it back a
- 21:55Speaker 1: couple of kilos and that's fine. But I'm not gonna
- 21:56Speaker 1: be like I'm losing thirty pounds, you know.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I totally hear you. And then that sentiment
- 22:02Speaker 3: so powerful never again. I would be remiss if I
- 22:06Speaker 3: didn't say that. It is one of those things that
- 22:11Speaker 3: you commit to, that mentality. Right, You got to this
- 22:14Speaker 3: place where you said to yourself, never again, won't I
- 22:17Speaker 3: make a team?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Never again? Am I gonna let myself get here?
- 22:20Speaker 3: But you had to go through all of the you know, days, weeks, months,
- 22:24Speaker 3: whatever the period of time was, to get to the
- 22:26Speaker 3: point where you could actually say never again. Because I
- 22:30Speaker 3: think some people hear something like that and they're like, Okay, well,
- 22:33Speaker 3: today's the day I'm going to say never again. But
- 22:35Speaker 3: if you're not ready for never again, not to say that,
- 22:39Speaker 3: like there's a moment where you can like jump off
- 22:40Speaker 3: the diving board and it's like Okay, here we go.
- 22:42Speaker 3: You're not always going to be ready, but sometimes you
- 22:44Speaker 3: need to get to a place where you're like, Okay,
- 22:46Speaker 3: I am capable of never again right now.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think I knew, like in that moment. I remember
- 22:52Speaker 1: I woke up the next morning and I just kind
- 22:55Speaker 1: of laid there in bed and then I would that
- 22:57Speaker 1: was like my moment, and I was like, nope, I'm
- 23:00Speaker 1: doing this anymore. Like I'm not feeling I don't want
- 23:02Speaker 1: to feel this way as an athlete, none of it.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And and I didn't necessarily put that to like I
- 23:06Speaker 1: needed like all these tangible examples of like like why
- 23:10Speaker 1: I'm a good athlete.
- 23:11Speaker 4: I didn't need all the medals and all that.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Like the real thing was like not not letting myself
- 23:18Speaker 1: be mentally drained, not not addressing like all the mental
- 23:21Speaker 1: issues I was having, like actually being like I need
- 23:24Speaker 1: to do this, this, this, I need to talk to
- 23:26Speaker 1: someone like and sorting that out. And it was much
- 23:29Speaker 1: less about like like getting medals and winning all this
- 23:34Speaker 1: and that, but a lot more about like never again
- 23:36Speaker 1: feeling that way, like I hadn't really done the things
- 23:40Speaker 1: I needed to do to get my head right.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Do you remember what some of the action items were
- 23:45Speaker 3: so to speak on that list.
- 23:48Speaker 1: To like do yeah, oh yeah, totally. I was like, Okay,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I need to talk to Lenny again. That's she was
- 23:55Speaker 1: my swort psych and I was like, I need to
- 23:57Speaker 1: I need to start actually training in the gym. Stop
- 24:00Speaker 1: like cause there were days where I just would I'd
- 24:02Speaker 1: be so depressed and I wouldn't go do my lift
- 24:04Speaker 1: because I just was so sad about like where I was,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and so I was like, no more like wallowing was
- 24:11Speaker 1: I was like, I'm not gonna wallow anymore and like
- 24:13Speaker 1: complain because that's why I'm here. And so it just
- 24:15Speaker 1: turned into like this thing where I was like positive,
- 24:20Speaker 1: like just be positive, like if you don't feel good,
- 24:23Speaker 1: like I'm not saying pick yourself up by the bootstraps
- 24:26Speaker 1: and get out of bed and go. But it's like steps.
- 24:28Speaker 1: So like today I wasn't feeling the best, so I'm
- 24:31Speaker 1: gonna lift tomorrow. So today I did a bunch of recovery.
- 24:34Speaker 1: You can ebb and flow like everything. And I think
- 24:36Speaker 1: people have this thing where they immediately go, I didn't
- 24:39Speaker 1: do the thing on my schedule, like it's the end
- 24:42Speaker 1: of the world. I should be ashamed, I should feel bad,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and instead of being negative, just go, oh, I like
- 24:49Speaker 1: I can't really see myself getting to the gym today. Okay,
- 24:53Speaker 1: so then go on a walk around the block literally
- 24:56Speaker 1: five minutes, like, go do some recovery roll like that's
- 25:00Speaker 1: kind of like what I've done is like I've been like,
- 25:03Speaker 1: it's okay to like not do the biggest thing, but
- 25:07Speaker 1: do something small and it's fine.
- 25:09Speaker 2: H do something small and it's fine.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Also, what I love about all of those examples is
- 25:15Speaker 3: each of them, in their own right, can be just
- 25:19Speaker 3: one small thing. And also, hearing you talk about it,
- 25:23Speaker 3: the emphasis that every single second is your chance to
- 25:27Speaker 3: start anew is really powerful, right because you don't have
- 25:30Speaker 3: to let one missed workout one meal where you feel
- 25:34Speaker 3: like you quote unquote did the wrong thing one day
- 25:36Speaker 3: where you didn't journal, like that one thing doesn't have
- 25:40Speaker 3: to ruin quote unquote everything. You have the chance one
- 25:44Speaker 3: second from right now, in this very moment, to start
- 25:47Speaker 3: fresh and take back the control that you feel as
- 25:50Speaker 3: though you've lost.
- 25:51Speaker 1: And that's like anybody too, to me, not even just athletes,
- 25:54Speaker 1: that's just like humans. I think there's just like this
- 25:58Speaker 1: misconception like in today's society, like if you haven't done
- 26:01Speaker 1: this in you're a failure or whatever, or people make
- 26:04Speaker 1: you feel like if you don't do a task that
- 26:07Speaker 1: you want plan to do that you should be ashamed
- 26:10Speaker 1: of yourself. And to me, I'm like, no, like maybe
- 26:13Speaker 1: they weren't ready to do that, Like, so do something else,
- 26:16Speaker 1: Like just do something you.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Know to mean something.
- 26:19Speaker 3: So for contacts, you start throwing in high school, a
- 26:22Speaker 3: shot puts eight point eight pounds, you realize or have
- 26:26Speaker 3: a sense of how it gets easier over time as
- 26:29Speaker 3: you gain this strength.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Oh totally. I think it was funny.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I went to college and I think I've talked to
- 26:35Speaker 1: this to a lot of Europeans because they have a
- 26:38Speaker 1: completely different system over here. But in college, I think
- 26:41Speaker 1: one thing the NCAA does well is like like workouts,
- 26:46Speaker 1: like building muscle, getting strong, doing things that like are
- 26:50Speaker 1: applicable to like specific sports or events. So I feel
- 26:54Speaker 1: like when I got there, it was like, oh, like
- 26:56Speaker 1: this is lifting, Like I'm lifting, I'm actually lifting this
- 27:00Speaker 1: great And so I think I just like I was
- 27:02Speaker 1: so strong, and I remember my freshman year, I think
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'd peep beat by like a meter and a half
- 27:07Speaker 1: because I just by being a little stronger. And like,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think that was kind of nice too, like there
- 27:13Speaker 1: was like, oh I'm strong, Like I kind of liked it.
- 27:16Speaker 1: But like I think even then, girls weren't exactly like
- 27:20Speaker 1: it wasn't like the push for like girls to be strong,
- 27:22Speaker 1: Like that's kind of like new age, new age, new age.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I don't think people realize that that's only like two
- 27:27Speaker 1: years old, where it's like, oh, girls can hit weights,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you know, like like a regular daily girl who like
- 27:33Speaker 1: works a normal job can go to the weight room
- 27:35Speaker 1: and get strong. And I love that because back then
- 27:38Speaker 1: it was kind of like, oh I'm strong, but I
- 27:39Speaker 1: was like, oh, I don't want to be too strong.
- 27:40Speaker 1: You know, you're still gonna be a girl. And I'm like,
- 27:43Speaker 1: oh not never that now, just like trying to be
- 27:45Speaker 1: as strong as possible.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Never that.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I remember.
- 27:48Speaker 3: I was the fitness editor Itself magazine back in two
- 27:52Speaker 3: thousand and sixteen, and it was during that time when
- 27:57Speaker 3: I was really into a CrossFit phase, and I remember
- 28:02Speaker 3: being the person that proposed and then successfully got like
- 28:05Speaker 3: different aspects of CrossFit, whether it was us talking about
- 28:08Speaker 3: CrossFit gear or featuring a CrossFit athlete, And these were
- 28:12Speaker 3: conversations that were never in the picture for self before
- 28:16Speaker 3: because of what you're saying.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It's like, well, does she feel comfortable doing this? Is
- 28:20Speaker 2: she doing this? And I was like, she's doing it.
- 28:22Speaker 3: There are now more CrossFit boxes than Starbucks locations, Like
- 28:26Speaker 3: we need to be cognizant of the fact that this
- 28:28Speaker 3: is here to stay.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it too, Like I think I was
- 28:32Speaker 1: just I was even at like I'm talking to like
- 28:35Speaker 1: some Nike people about it too, and I said, like
- 28:38Speaker 1: there's a new like wave and it's strength training, Like
- 28:41Speaker 1: people are in that weight room and people are put
- 28:44Speaker 1: mars above their head, Like there needs to be like
- 28:47Speaker 1: an adreas, like it's not addressed to me, and like
- 28:50Speaker 1: the main clothing companies, you know, there's like separate companies
- 28:54Speaker 1: for like this strength and conditioning thing. And I'm just like,
- 28:57Speaker 1: y'all need to like jump on this because I think
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's amazing too. Like even the gym I coo too.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It's like an old school like bodybuilding, like cool people
- 29:05Speaker 1: Jim and I love that and I go in there
- 29:08Speaker 1: and I'm like lifting heavy weights and people are either
- 29:10Speaker 1: hyping me up or they're not like making a big deal.
- 29:13Speaker 1: But like back in the day, it would be like, well,
- 29:15Speaker 1: like you're strong, like and I would.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Just hate it, like and like what and so like
- 29:22Speaker 4: what do you what does that mean?
- 29:23Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean you mentioned Nike. You are a Nike athlete.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Do you remember what it was like for you when
- 29:29Speaker 3: you signed that first contract?
- 29:31Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I've always loved Nike too, like my whole life and
- 29:36Speaker 1: so like I remember my first coach for Rotational. He
- 29:40Speaker 1: he was a Nike athlete, a thrower, and we were
- 29:42Speaker 1: talking about it a lot, and I was like, oh no,
- 29:44Speaker 1: like I wish, but probably never you know. You're like, oh,
- 29:47Speaker 1: that'll never happen for me. And I remember when I
- 29:51Speaker 1: finally got that contract and it was in the kitchen.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It was in a kitchen of an Airbnb at usas
- 29:56Speaker 1: I remember, and I signed it and I was like
- 29:58Speaker 1: crying with my agent. I was like no way, like
- 30:01Speaker 1: this's really happening, and I've had a really good relationship
- 30:04Speaker 1: with him ever since as well. Like even in that
- 30:07Speaker 1: low lull time I had where I was really sick
- 30:09Speaker 1: and stuff, my Nike guy always had my back and
- 30:12Speaker 1: Nike's kind of stayed with me through that, and that
- 30:14Speaker 1: was kind of nice. I felt like in that moment,
- 30:17Speaker 1: I kind of succeeded for the people who were still
- 30:21Speaker 1: there for me when I was down. So last year,
- 30:23Speaker 1: it was kind of like you believed in me and like, look,
- 30:26Speaker 1: I did it, you know, and that always felt really good.
- 30:28Speaker 3: I mean, you signed that first contract in twenty nineteen,
- 30:31Speaker 3: and then fast forward three years and you're the first
- 30:33Speaker 3: American woman to ever win the World championship. Shot put,
- 30:39Speaker 3: it sounds as though that faith standing by you, supporting
- 30:43Speaker 3: you really paid off all around.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I was always like worried, like I never want to
- 30:51Speaker 1: like disappoint the people who believe in me either. And
- 30:53Speaker 1: I remember the guy that is like my contact, I
- 30:57Speaker 1: guess is what you'd say. He's always like and really
- 31:00Speaker 1: supportive of me and like really lovely and I love
- 31:03Speaker 1: him and he's great and he never made me feel
- 31:06Speaker 1: like I was failing, which was nice.
- 31:08Speaker 3: And that goes back to our conversation of like the
- 31:10Speaker 3: athlete versus the person, because just like with anything in life,
- 31:13Speaker 3: like there are going to be ups and downs, and
- 31:16Speaker 3: you went through some very high highs and some very
- 31:18Speaker 3: low lows in a short amount of time.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I was really struggling through a lot of the
- 31:24Speaker 1: normal track and field things. Track is obviously a bit
- 31:28Speaker 1: different when it comes to how you get money and
- 31:31Speaker 1: contracts and all that stuff. And I think I got.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I guess I also forgot like my agent had passed
- 31:37Speaker 1: away in the middle of the season and twenty twenty
- 31:40Speaker 1: one as well, and I remember when I lost, like
- 31:45Speaker 1: how bad that felt because I was so close with him,
- 31:47Speaker 1: Like he got me my first Nike contract and all that,
- 31:50Speaker 1: And I think, like those are the things where I
- 31:54Speaker 1: needed to address certain loves and stuff, and that was
- 31:56Speaker 1: one of them. And one of the things that happened
- 31:59Speaker 1: to me last year. At the beginning of the year,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I had been dropped by the person who was helping
- 32:04Speaker 1: me at the time. Like, nothing feels worse, I think
- 32:07Speaker 1: than people kind of being like you're not really good
- 32:12Speaker 1: enough for me to represent you know. That's kind of
- 32:14Speaker 1: how it fell. And I remember like that being like
- 32:17Speaker 1: such a low moment for me at the beginning of
- 32:19Speaker 1: last year, and I was trying to find agents to
- 32:23Speaker 1: represent me, and nobody would talk to me, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 1: like no one would answer my calls, and people were
- 32:29Speaker 1: just kind of being like, I have too many athletes,
- 32:31Speaker 1: you know, like I was getting like rejected a lot.
- 32:34Speaker 1: And then I met my agent now and he was
- 32:36Speaker 1: the only one who kind of was like, you know what, whatever,
- 32:40Speaker 1: I don't have any shot putters fine, and I was
- 32:42Speaker 1: he was like, let's do it. And it was like
- 32:44Speaker 1: a week before World Indoors and I remember when I
- 32:47Speaker 1: got I got the silver medal in World Indoors and
- 32:49Speaker 1: I went to him and I was like, I guess,
- 32:52Speaker 1: like like thanks for believing me and me or whatever,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and he goes, I'll never doubt you or whatever, and
- 32:58Speaker 1: I'll like thank you. And even through this season, I'm
- 33:01Speaker 1: like doing well this season, but like obviously not as
- 33:04Speaker 1: good as last year.
- 33:04Speaker 4: I was undefeated.
- 33:06Speaker 1: And I text my agent the other day and I said, hey,
- 33:09Speaker 1: like I'm like really training really well, like I just
- 33:12Speaker 1: need to be with Paul and all this stuff. And
- 33:14Speaker 1: he just text me back, don't worry, I never doubt
- 33:17Speaker 1: you and your coach and I just remember being like,
- 33:20Speaker 1: this is who I need around me, Like why didn't
- 33:22Speaker 1: I have this around me like all the time? Like
- 33:25Speaker 1: when my agent passed, I wish I found someone like
- 33:27Speaker 1: him right away. That was one of the things the
- 33:30Speaker 1: other day. I just looked at my phone. I remember
- 33:32Speaker 1: kind of getting little tearad and I was like, man, like,
- 33:34Speaker 1: you just have to have the right people around you,
- 33:36Speaker 1: Like that's crazy to me, And that's why I told you. Now,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I feel like I have like such a perfect like group,
- 33:44Speaker 1: Like my fiance is amazing, the most supportive person on
- 33:47Speaker 1: the planet. I have an amazing coach and an amazing agent,
- 33:51Speaker 1: great friends, Like I just can't believe it. Like I'm like,
- 33:55Speaker 1: the things that will happen when you're just like happy
- 33:58Speaker 1: as a person and in the right place place just
- 34:00Speaker 1: amaze me.

- 37:11Speaker 3: Hearing your story and hearing about how difficult it was
- 37:16Speaker 3: for you before you got to this place, I just
- 37:20Speaker 3: can't gulize over that, because I'm sure that there were
- 37:23Speaker 3: so many moments where it felt like this was never
- 37:27Speaker 3: gonna happen for you.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Oh gosh, I could probably not even count on my
- 37:33Speaker 1: hands and feet how many times I lost belief that
- 37:36Speaker 1: I would ever win anything. I was always like, well,
- 37:40Speaker 1: I can just you know, make some money and be okay.
- 37:43Speaker 1: It was just this whole negative space I was in. Well,
- 37:47Speaker 1: you can just like be like kind of good, like
- 37:50Speaker 1: be one of the best, like you know, like be
- 37:52Speaker 1: up there top tens, you know. Like that was kind
- 37:54Speaker 1: of where my head went whenever I was there. I
- 37:57Speaker 1: was like, it's fine to just be top tents. But
- 37:59Speaker 1: now I'm like absolutely not, Like all the time, I'm
- 38:01Speaker 1: like no, Like the other day I was in the ring.
- 38:04Speaker 1: I remember training yesterday and my coach like I was
- 38:08Speaker 1: having a really good session, but I wanted like to
- 38:11Speaker 1: see if I could like dig deep and throw like
- 38:12Speaker 1: one in the middle of the session really far. And
- 38:15Speaker 1: I remember I got in the ring, I went to
- 38:16Speaker 1: the front, and I go, your world champion, act like it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And I went to the back of the ring and
- 38:21Speaker 1: I threw really far, and I was like, man, I
- 38:24Speaker 1: was like, who is she? I she did out of nowhere.
- 38:29Speaker 1: I just randomly to myself, I was like, oh, geez, okay.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Reminds me.
- 38:33Speaker 3: I had a conversation with des Lindon a while back,
- 38:36Speaker 3: and she talked to me about the year that she
- 38:39Speaker 3: became the Boston Marathon champion and everything she did that year.
- 38:43Speaker 3: She asked herself the same question, which was, is this
- 38:46Speaker 3: what a Boston Marathon champion would do? Like for a
- 38:48Speaker 3: year of training? Like eating, sleeping? Should I go on
- 38:51Speaker 3: this vacation?
- 38:52Speaker 1: Well?
- 38:52Speaker 2: Would the Boston Marathon champion go on this vacation? Like
- 38:54Speaker 2: all of it?
- 38:55Speaker 3: And how we talk to ourselves makes a major difference, right.
- 38:58Speaker 3: It's that sense of self belief that can truly motivate
- 39:01Speaker 3: you and push you to places that maybe you didn't
- 39:03Speaker 3: even know that you were capable of.
- 39:05Speaker 4: I totally agree.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I think sometimes like you just need to tell yourself,
- 39:10Speaker 1: like what you know you need to hear because like
- 39:14Speaker 1: you can keep things bottled up in here all the time,
- 39:16Speaker 1: but like sometimes you just need to be like, come on, man,
- 39:19Speaker 1: like get it together. And I know so many people
- 39:21Speaker 1: do that as well, Like you know, people just go
- 39:24Speaker 1: come on, you got this like for anything, like and
- 39:27Speaker 1: I love that, And I think everyone has their own way,
- 39:29Speaker 1: and I kind of love that, like is this what
- 39:31Speaker 1: the And that's that's a good way. Yeah, steal that
- 39:35Speaker 1: I might steal that.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I might big gold medalists would do.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I'm totally stealing that that.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 3: So as you're gearing up right now for Buda Pest,
- 39:48Speaker 3: how are you feeling.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, So obviously, like this season has been like ups
- 39:54Speaker 1: and downs because I changed my technique at the end
- 39:58Speaker 1: of the season, which I think that's like kind of
- 40:00Speaker 1: what I've talked to people about where I say, like
- 40:03Speaker 1: you've got to make changes and not be afraid to
- 40:04Speaker 1: do it, and sometimes that can result in like maybe
- 40:07Speaker 1: you're not doing the best, but you're you're doing it
- 40:09Speaker 1: for the for future goals. And I kind of came
- 40:13Speaker 1: back and I canceled to meet this month and I said,
- 40:16Speaker 1: I just want to train, like I want to train
- 40:17Speaker 1: this technique out and I want to get it sorted,
- 40:19Speaker 1: and I think like a week in I finally it
- 40:23Speaker 1: was like the click and I was like yes, and
- 40:27Speaker 1: I like found it and and I mean, I haven't
- 40:29Speaker 1: really had a session that I would I wouldn't like
- 40:33Speaker 1: scream at the top of my lungs was bad, Like
- 40:37Speaker 1: they were all great, Like it was so amazing, Like
- 40:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't complain about one session I've had since that moment,
- 40:42Speaker 1: and I just I feel really ready. And I think
- 40:45Speaker 1: it's also those like mental moments I'm giving myself, Like
- 40:48Speaker 1: for us, we have a AM qualifying and then PM
- 40:52Speaker 1: we're competing, which is like not that I don't think
- 40:54Speaker 1: they've done that in worlds really ever, It's usually you
- 40:57Speaker 1: qualify one day and then you compete the next. So
- 41:01Speaker 1: what's funny is for Olympic Trials we've done like USA
- 41:05Speaker 1: people do this all the time. So like, I feel
- 41:06Speaker 1: ready for that moment, and I keep mentally preparing myself
- 41:10Speaker 1: for that by being like we'll randomly be in a
- 41:12Speaker 1: session and my coach or I will go, Okay, I
- 41:14Speaker 1: have to qualify right now, so it'll just be like, oh, yeah,
- 41:17Speaker 1: so you have this set distance that you have to
- 41:19Speaker 1: throw to qualify. So I do it, and I think
- 41:22Speaker 1: like mentally preparing yourself for stuff like that always helps.
- 41:26Speaker 1: And I just feel ready now because I've done all
- 41:28Speaker 1: the physical and mental preparation.
- 41:30Speaker 2: I love that I feel ready.
- 41:33Speaker 3: You mentioned that, you mentioned, you know, being in that
- 41:36Speaker 3: practice and just throwing really far and being really proud
- 41:38Speaker 3: of yourself for contact. So the hurdlers know, your farthest
- 41:43Speaker 3: throw to date is twenty twenty fifty one, which is meters,
- 41:48Speaker 3: which translates to over sixty seven feet.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Me and Maggie, you and the other American girls. Who's
- 41:58Speaker 1: world lead right now. She's actually my really close friend.
- 42:02Speaker 1: We're competitors, but we're really close. She's one of my bridesmaids.
- 42:05Speaker 1: I tell everyone that because I think it's so funny.
- 42:08Speaker 1: But me and her, we were we were at this meet.
- 42:11Speaker 1: We were standing on the twenty line and both of
- 42:13Speaker 1: our pbs are over twenty and I was looking and
- 42:16Speaker 1: I said, dude, that's far as f and she goes, yeah,
- 42:20Speaker 1: I kind of is, and I was like, I said no,
- 42:22Speaker 1: I said look at where like, look at your feet
- 42:24Speaker 1: and I said, look at the toe board and she goes,
- 42:26Speaker 1: oh yeah, And I was like, we throw so far?
- 42:29Speaker 4: She was like, yeah, we kind of do. It was
- 42:31Speaker 4: so funny.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Wait, let's talk a little bit about being so tight
- 42:37Speaker 3: with technically your competition.
- 42:39Speaker 2: How is that for you?
- 42:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Like she's my biggest competition, but she's also like
- 42:44Speaker 1: one of my biggest supporters, and I think she could
- 42:45Speaker 1: say the same about me. Like I've always said this,
- 42:49Speaker 1: like Number one, I want my sport to do well.
- 42:51Speaker 1: So like when people throw far, I love it, like
- 42:54Speaker 1: regardless of who it is, I want everyone to throw far.
- 42:58Speaker 1: But number two like, no matter what, but you do.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Like she's done her training, I've done mine. Whether or
- 43:04Speaker 1: not we're friends is not gonna affect the leaderboard. Like
- 43:08Speaker 1: whoever's meant to win is meant to win because they
- 43:11Speaker 1: trained right and they got the technique right. And so
- 43:13Speaker 1: I feel like we've never let like competition limit us,
- 43:17Speaker 1: like limit our friendship. Ever, we've always roomed together, we
- 43:21Speaker 1: travel together, like I think it's it's amazing and honestly,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I think it makes it better. Like I go places
- 43:27Speaker 1: like I'll go to worlds. I'm gonna be nervous, it's scary,
- 43:30Speaker 1: but she'll be right there with me and so like
- 43:32Speaker 1: you always have someone. Yeah, And it makes no difference
- 43:36Speaker 1: that we're friends.
- 43:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Because we're friends doesn't mean she's gonna throw farther because
- 43:40Speaker 1: I like her and she's in my wedding, you know
- 43:42Speaker 1: what I mean. Like, that's not gonna make her beat me.
- 43:44Speaker 1: What's gonna make her beat me is if she prepared better. Yeah,
- 43:48Speaker 1: And I think people have like I think people sometimes
- 43:51Speaker 1: have an issue wrapping their brains around that some notice. Well.
- 43:54Speaker 3: I think that also goes back to that concept of
- 43:56Speaker 3: like self talk, and there are some people that respond
- 43:59Speaker 3: well scientifically to self talk that includes expletives for instance,
- 44:04Speaker 3: where other people may not respond as well. If that
- 44:08Speaker 3: language is included, it's could be translated to competition. I
- 44:11Speaker 3: love your perspective and I totally co sign and agree
- 44:14Speaker 3: with it, But there may be someone that feels as
- 44:17Speaker 3: though having that type of friendship isn't going to allow
- 44:20Speaker 3: them to quote unquote with the blinders on. It's all
- 44:22Speaker 3: about your perspective and how you show up to the moment,
- 44:26Speaker 3: how you view the moment, and your perception then becomes
- 44:29Speaker 3: your reality. Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 1: No, I totally agree with that too, and it's funny
- 44:33Speaker 1: because there's I think there's a couple of girls well
- 44:35Speaker 1: where like all of us kind of like sit and
- 44:37Speaker 1: joke and hang out.
- 44:38Speaker 4: We're hanging out for like an hour.
- 44:40Speaker 2: And a half, where I was gonna say, you're there
- 44:41Speaker 2: for a.
- 44:41Speaker 1: While, Like I was like, I don't know about y'all,
- 44:44Speaker 1: but like I can't just sit there and be like
- 44:47Speaker 1: the whole time. I can't do it. And so like
- 44:50Speaker 1: some of the girls, I think there's like two or
- 44:51Speaker 1: three that do it. But then we'll go all eat
- 44:53Speaker 1: dinner and stuff. But like sometimes in competition, everyone's a
- 44:56Speaker 1: bit different. So when there's the people who kind of
- 44:58Speaker 1: want to be like in the zone, we just leave
- 45:00Speaker 1: them be. We let them be in their zone. Like
- 45:02Speaker 1: it's fine, Like if you want to be in the zone,
- 45:04Speaker 1: that's chill. Like everyone has a different way about it.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Ninety percent of us, I would say, we're just kind
- 45:08Speaker 1: of like, oh, what is this said?
- 45:10Speaker 4: How you doing, how you feel? How you been?
- 45:12Speaker 2: Like it's just because we have you seen a Barbie movie.
- 45:16Speaker 4: We're just like, I'm bored, what are you doing? It's
- 45:19Speaker 4: very that, it's very bad.
- 45:22Speaker 3: We spoke at the top of this about how growing
- 45:25Speaker 3: up you didn't feel like you saw women in conventional
- 45:28Speaker 3: media that looked like you.
- 45:29Speaker 2: I know.
- 45:30Speaker 3: We also did speak on the fact that maybe in
- 45:33Speaker 3: group settings we're still seeing that lack of representation. How
- 45:36Speaker 3: do you feel about representation these days for women of
- 45:40Speaker 3: all body types.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I mean, it's definitely better than it was, but I
- 45:45Speaker 1: don't think it's quite like where it should be. Like
- 45:48Speaker 1: to me, people always compare it to like, oh, the
- 45:51Speaker 1: fashion industry and this sent the other Like, I'm not
- 45:53Speaker 1: even thinking about that. I don't care about catwalks, Like
- 45:55Speaker 1: I'm not saying there watching it, that's for them. What
- 45:57Speaker 1: I'm thinking about is like they may there's a whole
- 46:00Speaker 1: song and dance when they have like a plus size
- 46:03Speaker 1: person or or like somebody from a marginalized group or whatever.
- 46:07Speaker 1: They make a whole song and dance about it, right like,
- 46:09Speaker 1: instead of it just being like, just do it because
- 46:12Speaker 1: you wanted to do it?
- 46:13Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 46:14Speaker 1: Like it almost feels like they're being like, look what
- 46:16Speaker 1: we did, and you just go, well, why don't you
- 46:19Speaker 1: just do it and not say it like just instead
- 46:21Speaker 1: of being like, oh, this plus size yoga person, this
- 46:24Speaker 1: plus size like boxer, look at them, instead just be like,
- 46:27Speaker 1: look at this boxer, look at this person doing yoga.
- 46:30Speaker 1: They're in the same commercial as this person running that's smaller,
- 46:34Speaker 1: Like that's fine, But I feel like when you make
- 46:36Speaker 1: a point of it, you just kind of like you
- 46:40Speaker 1: kind of bring it back like three paces from where
- 46:42Speaker 1: you were, Like you could just do it and don't
- 46:45Speaker 1: talk about it, you know.
- 46:46Speaker 4: What I mean?
- 46:47Speaker 2: Appropriate that the Nike athlete is saying, just do it?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Right If you.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Think I haven't told them this and you're out of.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Your mind, geez, available for all of your Olympic commercials
- 47:00Speaker 3: coming forward.
- 47:01Speaker 4: Fully, not me being like and I'm available.
- 47:06Speaker 2: I think it's admirable.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Though I also I'd be remiss if I didn't ask
- 47:10Speaker 3: if it makes you feel any sort of way being
- 47:15Speaker 3: someone that is at the forefront, that is, I mean,
- 47:19Speaker 3: as conventional media would label you plus size. Does it
- 47:23Speaker 3: make you feel any kind of way being this person
- 47:26Speaker 3: that's at the forefront opening yourself up to you know,
- 47:29Speaker 3: these comments, these this unsolicited feedback on your body.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, it's it's constant too.
- 47:35Speaker 2: When you say it's constant, Like example.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Every Instagram post there's something there's always positive people, But
- 47:43Speaker 1: like I don't really let it affect me. I think
- 47:45Speaker 1: I've done pretty good because I have my fiance and
- 47:47Speaker 1: we usually joke about it, but it's kind of like
- 47:51Speaker 1: always thrown at your face, like maye me like that
- 47:54Speaker 1: you're you're not the smallest athlete, and people go, I
- 47:58Speaker 1: think someone commented the other day, oh, so the shot
- 48:01Speaker 1: putters are wearing the crop top now talking about my uniform,
- 48:05Speaker 1: and I was like, oh cool, and yes I am,
- 48:10Speaker 1: and I have a gold medal with one on.
- 48:14Speaker 4: I was wearing it while I won.
- 48:16Speaker 2: That You're like I felt really strong in my crops.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Yet I was like, thank you. It was great, gave
- 48:21Speaker 4: me good aerodynamics.
- 48:24Speaker 1: But yeah, sometimes it also hurts because like other people
- 48:27Speaker 1: will be like, oh, yeah, I'm going to do like
- 48:30Speaker 1: this photo shoot or I'm going to do this that
- 48:33Speaker 1: never happens for us, Like I'm like, not me, Like
- 48:38Speaker 1: no one's ever asked me to do a photo shoot
- 48:39Speaker 1: because like I just think it's also not just like
- 48:43Speaker 1: I wouldn't say on traditional plus size either. I don't
- 48:47Speaker 1: think I I like, look the right part, if that
- 48:51Speaker 1: makes sense. And I think I find that like a
- 48:55Speaker 1: bit sad because to me, like I know that I'm
- 48:59Speaker 1: like strong but also like curvy and that's fine, but
- 49:04Speaker 1: like I feel like I don't fit the right like
- 49:06Speaker 1: mold of what they want to see, and like plus
- 49:09Speaker 1: size campaigns, what's the mold the hourglass the like small top,
- 49:15Speaker 1: big bottom and I and I have like the hourglass figure,
- 49:18Speaker 1: but the top like I'm broad shouldered and stuff you
- 49:21Speaker 1: don't often see the apple shapes and the pears and
- 49:25Speaker 1: all that, Like you really they really want that, And
- 49:28Speaker 1: so you're you're plus size, but you're the ideal plus size.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Again I'm air quoting, like, yeah, I think at this
- 49:34Speaker 3: point the podcast listeners are just like mentally here with us.
- 49:37Speaker 3: I also I can really relate to that concept of
- 49:42Speaker 3: just feeling like you just don't have the right body.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I think there's so much power in being able to
- 49:49Speaker 3: say my body might not be the quote unquote right
- 49:52Speaker 3: body by whoever's standards, but this body is mine.
- 49:58Speaker 2: It is my home, and I only have I.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Have one opportunity to figure out how to make my
- 50:03Speaker 3: home as freaking comfortable as possible.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, I think it's something I want to like
- 50:10Speaker 1: like address is that, like I was never this confident person,
- 50:14Speaker 1: Like I started out like struggling a lot with this
- 50:17Speaker 1: as well. And I think if I had read the
- 50:20Speaker 1: comments that I have now back in the day, I
- 50:22Speaker 1: would have like broken down. And so I also think
- 50:24Speaker 1: that it's okay to like not fully have that yet
- 50:27Speaker 1: because it's like a buildable thing. Like it's hard to
- 50:31Speaker 1: it's hard to just come out and be confident in
- 50:34Speaker 1: your body all the time when you're constantly bombarded with
- 50:37Speaker 1: like what the ideal body should be and what you
- 50:41Speaker 1: should look like. And I and I and I think
- 50:44Speaker 1: it's fine to struggle with that for a while. And
- 50:47Speaker 1: I did, and I reckon it's only been like three
- 50:50Speaker 1: years where I can read those comments and just kind
- 50:51Speaker 1: of laugh instead of actually cry, which is what I
- 50:54Speaker 1: haven't done before. And that's fine, but like it's definitely
- 50:58Speaker 1: like hard feeling like I'm not the ideal. It never
- 51:03Speaker 1: doesn't hurt, you know, but like instead of like crying
- 51:07Speaker 1: about it, I want to like see what changes can
- 51:09Speaker 1: be made. Like I said, it's not like I haven't
- 51:12Speaker 1: had these talks with my sponsor and stuff, and they've
- 51:16Speaker 1: been really open to things, which I love how they're
- 51:20Speaker 1: not afraid to like look at look at it through
- 51:23Speaker 1: my lens as well.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, really powerful and really again just so so relatable.
- 51:30Speaker 3: I'm curious to know how out of the ring, how
- 51:34Speaker 3: does Chase take care of Chase?
- 51:36Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, golly, I don't know.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Like I started feeling a lot better as well when
- 51:41Speaker 1: I got home, because I I kind of was getting
- 51:43Speaker 1: in that rud again where I was before, and I
- 51:46Speaker 1: finally was like, oh no, not again. And so I
- 51:48Speaker 1: start doing my skincare again and I put my hair
- 51:51Speaker 1: extensions in, and I just like, I really like want
- 51:54Speaker 1: to care about like my my body, and I think
- 51:57Speaker 1: that really helps me care about my mind, Like it
- 51:59Speaker 1: makes me feel so much better. Like I keep waking
- 52:02Speaker 1: up or looking in the mirror and stuff, and I go,
- 52:05Speaker 1: I look really pretty today, and I'm and I'm like,
- 52:07Speaker 1: oh I miss that, Like I missed when I would
- 52:09Speaker 1: just wake.
- 52:09Speaker 4: Up and be like, oh I look pretty today.
- 52:11Speaker 1: And I feel like I've been feeling that because I
- 52:14Speaker 1: kind of like was in a red again where it
- 52:16Speaker 1: wasn't really taking care of myself again, like kind of
- 52:19Speaker 1: and not meaning like you have to do like tape,
- 52:22Speaker 1: but like that's something I do that like makes you
- 52:23Speaker 1: feel good, like putting on my sunscreen, as simple as that.
- 52:27Speaker 1: And I think I started doing that again. It really helped.
- 52:30Speaker 1: And I think that's one of the things I do.
- 52:32Speaker 1: I get a bit girly. I think that's fine, that's
- 52:34Speaker 1: kind of my vibe.
- 52:35Speaker 2: It's totally it's all. I think it's totally fine. And
- 52:39Speaker 2: you talked about being in that rut before.
- 52:41Speaker 3: Yes, they are related, right, how you feel physically and emotionally,
- 52:46Speaker 3: they totally go hand in hand. Right, So you at
- 52:49Speaker 3: that time you referenced before, went through a period that
- 52:54Speaker 3: you stopped all of these things that definitely had rainfall
- 52:59Speaker 3: a domino of fact on one another. So if you
- 53:02Speaker 3: can identify, Okay, because I went through this before, I
- 53:05Speaker 3: know how X feels. I am feeling X kind of
- 53:08Speaker 3: way again. I now know that I have these strategies
- 53:11Speaker 3: in my toolbox that can help me get through this
- 53:15Speaker 3: feeling and navigate it so that I can make one
- 53:17Speaker 3: step forward toward feeling a little bit better on my
- 53:20Speaker 3: body today.
- 53:21Speaker 2: And another step the next day, and another step the
- 53:23Speaker 2: next day.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, And I think it's that easy sometimes too,
- 53:27Speaker 1: Like for me, I was like I was joking with
- 53:29Speaker 1: my fiance too, because I hadn't put like my hair
- 53:32Speaker 1: sentsions in a long time and I put them in
- 53:34Speaker 1: and I said, oh my god, all it took was
- 53:36Speaker 1: extensions and I was like throwing him around everywhere. And
- 53:39Speaker 1: then my next training session was really good, and I
- 53:41Speaker 1: remember being like, it's just the hair, but it really does.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Like I think, I always say, like, look good, throw good,
- 53:47Speaker 1: and that's for me, Like that's not necessarily everyone, but
- 53:50Speaker 1: that's kind of like that's what helps me. Like everyone's different.
- 53:53Speaker 3: You know, girl, When I have a tough day in
- 53:55Speaker 3: the office and I know what's on deck, the first
- 53:58Speaker 3: thing I do without fail. While firstly I have to
- 54:01Speaker 3: drink my This sounds like such an advertisement, but I
- 54:04Speaker 3: have to drink my AG one. And then after I
- 54:06Speaker 3: drink my AG one, I need to put on like
- 54:10Speaker 3: a good outfit.
- 54:11Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, if I have real clothes on today.
- 54:13Speaker 3: The athleisure is like staying in my bedroom, Like I'm
- 54:17Speaker 3: gonna put on a dress and I'm gonna walk into
- 54:19Speaker 3: a different room in my own apartment and I'm gonna
- 54:21Speaker 3: sit down and that is gonna enable me to show up.
- 54:24Speaker 2: And do what I've got to get done.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 54:27Speaker 1: I think that's funny you say ath leisure too, because
- 54:29Speaker 1: like for me, if when I get up, it's sweatpants
- 54:32Speaker 1: and like a giant shirt like my fiance shirt or something. No,
- 54:35Speaker 1: no undergarments, and I'm just dead. And so I told
- 54:38Speaker 1: him when I put that sports brawn and like my
- 54:41Speaker 1: actual athlete outfit, Like when I have that on, that's
- 54:44Speaker 1: when I go, Oh, I can go on a walk.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Now, now I can.
- 54:46Speaker 2: You're a superhero outfit.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Yeah, now I can do things. So I'm not gonna
- 54:50Speaker 1: I'm not gonna roll without a bron So that's over.
- 54:54Speaker 1: As long as I put sports Brawn, I'm good.
- 54:56Speaker 4: Like sports bra the.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Modern day superhero. Soon.
- 55:00Speaker 3: So when it comes to your Instagram chase, they see
- 55:03Speaker 3: on the cover a world champion shot putter, a Nike athlete.
- 55:07Speaker 3: When you look in the mirror, though, what is it
- 55:10Speaker 3: that you see looking back at you?
- 55:13Speaker 2: Oh, let me be honest, break it down.
- 55:17Speaker 1: I feel like I've been an athletes since I was
- 55:19Speaker 1: like four, and I think I do. I'm always like, yeah,
- 55:23Speaker 1: like you're a person, then you're an athlete. But I
- 55:26Speaker 1: still am in that struggle zone of seeing myself outside
- 55:30Speaker 1: of like the athlete space. And I think it's because
- 55:32Speaker 1: I've been an athlete my whole life. I really do
- 55:34Speaker 1: struggle like just being a person sometimes and and my
- 55:37Speaker 1: emotions and everything stems from like me as an athlete,
- 55:41Speaker 1: and I know, like that's not exactly the healthiest thing.
- 55:44Speaker 1: And I need to figure out like who I am
- 55:45Speaker 1: as a person as well, because there's going to be
- 55:48Speaker 1: an end to this at some point. But right now,
- 55:51Speaker 1: I'm still in like my who am I? Phase of
- 55:54Speaker 1: like who am I? Outside of the rank? Like who
- 55:57Speaker 1: am I? Like I try and think, like, well, I'm
- 56:00Speaker 1: I'm you know, I feel like I'm a really good daughter,
- 56:03Speaker 1: Like I'm a dog mom, I'm a fiance, like I.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Love all that.
- 56:08Speaker 1: But I still see myself through that shot put lens
- 56:11Speaker 1: and that athlete lens, and I'm still struggling to find
- 56:16Speaker 1: who I am as well outside.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Do you think that the perception and where you are
- 56:22Speaker 3: mentally has anything to do with where you are in
- 56:25Speaker 3: the calendar year with your sport?
- 56:28Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. I mean I imagine, like being seventeen days
- 56:32Speaker 1: out from World Championships doesn't exactly Linda hand to me
- 56:37Speaker 1: trying to figure out who I am outside an athlete
- 56:39Speaker 1: when everything I'm like eating, sleeping, and drinking track and
- 56:42Speaker 1: field right now. So yeah, yeah, I imagine it doesn't
- 56:45Speaker 1: help right now, ask me in a couple.
- 56:47Speaker 3: Of months, we'll have to revisit this confort well, we
- 56:50Speaker 3: will revisit this conversation in a few months. And I
- 56:53Speaker 3: think it's really beautiful also that you do have this
- 56:57Speaker 3: understanding that knowing wanting to know who you are outside
- 57:01Speaker 3: of being an athlete is something that is of importance
- 57:06Speaker 3: to you, because that's the first step in starting to
- 57:10Speaker 3: figure that out. And until you say to yourself, no,
- 57:13Speaker 3: but I have so much more to me. There is
- 57:15Speaker 3: so much more to me than being this world champion.
- 57:19Speaker 2: That's just the beginning.
- 57:20Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 57:21Speaker 1: And it's like I said, like I know that like
- 57:24Speaker 1: being an athlete, no matter who you are, like on
- 57:27Speaker 1: the certain level, like where I'm at now, there's like
- 57:29Speaker 1: obviously a time limit. Your body can only do it
- 57:32Speaker 1: so long like at this level. Yeah, And so like
- 57:35Speaker 1: I think I've been taught like I've been addressing it
- 57:38Speaker 1: more like with my sports like as well. And I
- 57:42Speaker 1: was talking to her and she goes, You're like really
- 57:44Speaker 1: self aware of your issues, but it's about like kind
- 57:47Speaker 1: of getting them out and like solving them. So like
- 57:50Speaker 1: I know a lot of the things that are wrong
- 57:51Speaker 1: or I know a lot of things going on, it
- 57:53Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily mean I'm like solving them to the best
- 57:56Speaker 1: of my ability. And so one of the things right
- 57:58Speaker 1: now is like, I I'm a confident athlete, but it
- 58:01Speaker 1: wasn't quite coming out. And so she gave me, like,
- 58:04Speaker 1: obviously some things that I'm doing that are helping me
- 58:07Speaker 1: now to kind of put it out and so that
- 58:09Speaker 1: I think that's gonna be. Another thing that I probably
- 58:11Speaker 1: talk to her about is like, how do I get
- 58:13Speaker 1: that self awareness, like where I know what's happening, I
- 58:16Speaker 1: know what's going on, and how do I go about
- 58:19Speaker 1: finding her?
- 58:20Speaker 4: Like who is she? Like, let's find her?
- 58:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 58:23Speaker 3: What are Chase Eely's tips for being your most confident self?
- 58:28Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 58:29Speaker 1: I think one of the things is I learned me
- 58:32Speaker 1: and me and my coach truck be and a lot
- 58:34Speaker 1: now is there was a viral clip that went around too,
- 58:36Speaker 1: but we've always talked about that rule of thirds, you
- 58:39Speaker 1: know that one that clip, Yeah, and so we we
- 58:44Speaker 1: say that. He says that to me a lot now
- 58:46Speaker 1: and and I think that's helped is where you look
- 58:49Speaker 1: at it and you go, it's not gonna be good
- 58:50Speaker 1: one hundred percent of the time, Like that's not the way,
- 58:53Speaker 1: like the cookie crumbles, it just doesn't work, Like and
- 58:55Speaker 1: it's okay that like sometimes your practice are gonna be
- 58:59Speaker 1: the best or sometimes not gonna get this one thing
- 59:01Speaker 1: done that you needed to get done, but like it's
- 59:03Speaker 1: not the end of the day, Like it's not the
- 59:05Speaker 1: end of the world. And I think that's really helped
- 59:06Speaker 1: me like build confidence and being like just because I
- 59:09Speaker 1: have a bad session, it doesn't just like.
- 59:11Speaker 4: Break me down.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Like I'm not like, oh, I just go, oh, that's
- 59:14Speaker 1: part of the bad third. Like every time I go, well,
- 59:16Speaker 1: that's the bad like I'll just put that in the bad.
- 59:19Speaker 4: Third category, move on.
- 59:21Speaker 1: And that's kind of what happened on Saturday. I was
- 59:24Speaker 1: I it was rough, I was feeling rough and the
- 59:26Speaker 1: session was rough, and then yesterday was probably like the
- 59:29Speaker 1: third best session of my career. So it's like it's fine,
- 59:32Speaker 1: just put that in the bad third move on. And
- 59:35Speaker 1: I think that's helped me not be negative and like
- 59:37Speaker 1: really keep my confidence up there.
- 59:40Speaker 2: I really loved this conversation.
- 59:41Speaker 3: I think there's just been so many really awesome takeaways
- 59:43Speaker 3: and truly to hear you be so vulnerable and open,
- 59:47Speaker 3: like you said at the top of this, like the
- 59:49Speaker 3: feedback and people being like, oh, I feel that way too.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Like it's not just that I feel that way too.
- 59:54Speaker 2: I can say that without a doubt.
- 59:55Speaker 3: There are so many people listening to this right now
- 59:57Speaker 3: that have felt exactly how you have felt or feel
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: currently and are also doing the work to try to
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: get to this place where they feel better in their body.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: And the only way that we do that is by
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: having these conversations in a way that other people can
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: tune in. Other people can stand up and be like, Hey,
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: I'm not alone and it feels really good not to
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: be alone.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: Yeah, totally.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I think like these are the conversations that like, I
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: would have died to hear when I was young, and
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I hope they can do for like other young people
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: what they would have done for me.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: For sure.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: Yeah, right now, Chase, you have an opportunity to offer
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: yourself a piece of advice back when you are at
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: your lowest low you're pre tokyo, you're just not feeling
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: like yourself, and you know what, you know, now, what
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: do you tell yourself?
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Probably to get yourself mentally right and don't try and
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: fake it till you make it? Actually sort yourself out
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: and then get yourself right and then do what you
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: know you can do.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Small steps to what you know you can do. I
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: love it.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: I'm so happy that we were able to do this today. Chase,
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: tell the hurdlers that they don't follow you just yet.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: How do they follow along with you? How do they
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: keep up with you? Give us all your details.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I would say, like my Instagram's probably my most followed thing,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: which is just Chasey pooh sp for shot put, but
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: it looks like Chasey poos. Everyone calls me poop, so
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: that's fun. But yeah, I'm always on there doing my training.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Everything's on there, Everything's on Instagram.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: I'm over at Emily a Body and at Hurdle Podcast
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Another hurdle Concered.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time
