- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition to Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. I love
- 0:14Speaker 1: it when all the boys are here because we're smarter
- 0:17Speaker 1: with two smart guys. And you guy like me who's
- 0:20Speaker 1: just here because he's very handsome. The Cardinals. You do
- 0:26Speaker 1: care me?
- 0:26Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Cardinals have an off day and then they open up
- 0:31Speaker 1: a weekend set with the Cubs and don't look now,
- 0:35Speaker 1: but the Cardinals are winning again. Game over five hundred.
- 0:38Speaker 1: They won three straight series, including really good teams like
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Phillies. I guess they're pretty good. Gentlemen. Let's talk
- 0:48Speaker 1: about how the Cardinals did it. I would say pitching, pitching, pitching.
- 0:53Speaker 1: They beat Sanchez and Wheeler. Lance will start with you,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but in yesterday's game, Lady was outstanding. He's got a
- 1:03Speaker 1: streak now of nine straight games where he's given up
- 1:06Speaker 1: two runs or less. The starting rotation has been really
- 1:11Speaker 1: good throughout the ups and downs of the season. What
- 1:14Speaker 1: are you seeing?
- 1:15Speaker 3: I think that's why you're the're a five hundred team.
- 1:18Speaker 3: If their starting rotation was not really good throughout the year,
- 1:21Speaker 3: they would be a below five hundred team. I think
- 1:24Speaker 3: their rotation and their pitching in general was under evaluated
- 1:31Speaker 3: undervalue to start the year, mostly because there's a lot
- 1:34Speaker 3: of There were a lot of unknowns or younger kids
- 1:37Speaker 3: in the rotation that needed to take a step, not
- 1:39Speaker 3: only from triple to the big leagues, but from being
- 1:41Speaker 3: in the big league rotation to being unknown commodity in
- 1:45Speaker 3: a rotation. So you have Lady who did really well
- 1:48Speaker 3: in the bullpen last year. Now he's taken that step
- 1:50Speaker 3: as a starter, which he has the stuff to do it.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Now we're seeing him put that together as year goes on,
- 1:55Speaker 3: which is awesome for him. Polante's taken the next step.
- 1:59Speaker 3: McGreevey's kind of became what we hoped him thought he'd
- 2:01Speaker 3: be from his Triple A numbers, but he doesn't have
- 2:04Speaker 3: the strikeouts or the plus stuff, so no one gave
- 2:06Speaker 3: him the time of day nationally. But they've got guys
- 2:10Speaker 3: who can pitch, can get out, do the things they
- 2:12Speaker 3: need to do, and they're doing that. And they have
- 2:14Speaker 3: really good defense behind him because they've got young legs
- 2:17Speaker 3: and guys that can cover a lot of grounds. So
- 2:19Speaker 3: all that combined keeps youing games. Now, the hitting is
- 2:22Speaker 3: going to come as come and go like it has
- 2:25Speaker 3: this year, and that's why they go through the stretches
- 2:27Speaker 3: of losing that they've had or not playing as winning
- 2:31Speaker 3: baseball as possible. But that's part of the gig here
- 2:33Speaker 3: until you get a bone fly lineup that you can
- 2:35Speaker 3: count on to score you runs. But fitching and defense
- 2:38Speaker 3: can keep you into games and keep you a five
- 2:39Speaker 3: hundred team, and that's what we're seeing.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I think it's really interesting because I thought the Cardinals
- 2:45Speaker 1: would be more consistent hitting. I thought as the season progressed,
- 2:49Speaker 1: with a lot of young guys not used to the
- 2:51Speaker 1: major league innings. To this extent, Kyle and these guys
- 2:54Speaker 1: are flourishing. For a guy like Lady's got a lot
- 2:57Speaker 1: of pitches, a lot of talent I used to starting
- 3:00Speaker 1: in Major league baseball. Are you surprised by the amount
- 3:03Speaker 1: of success he's still having as the season grinds on.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I think it's probably unfair if I say I'm surprised
- 3:12Speaker 4: by the love of success, because I think when you
- 3:14Speaker 4: know in twenty twenty three and or excuse me, twenty
- 3:17Speaker 4: four and twenty five, when he was primarily in the bullpen,
- 3:19Speaker 4: you know he had good stuff and me through the
- 3:21Speaker 4: ball really well. I think, you know, maybe the surprise
- 3:23Speaker 4: came from the couple of years before where he really
- 3:25Speaker 4: hadn't put it together, and then now you know, he's
- 3:28Speaker 4: turned himself into a really reliable, you know, one of
- 3:31Speaker 4: the better starters maybe even in the National League over
- 3:33Speaker 4: the last month. So you know, he's he's been really good.
- 3:37Speaker 4: And I think, just like Lance said, this team needed
- 3:41Speaker 4: Kyle leehy Lehi and McGreevy and Polante to be this
- 3:46Speaker 4: version of themselves if they wanted to have a chance
- 3:49Speaker 4: to make the playoffs. And that's what these guys have done.
- 3:53Speaker 4: And we talked about Libby a little bit. He's been
- 3:55Speaker 4: feast or famine. But the good part is is he's
- 3:58Speaker 4: also had half of his starts of being a fee
- 4:00Speaker 4: So I mean they've won a decent amount of his
- 4:02Speaker 4: starts as well, even though his numbers don't look pretty.
- 4:04Speaker 4: So you know, Lance hit that nail on the head
- 4:07Speaker 4: with the recipe for consistency, you know, and your team
- 4:10Speaker 4: record and wins is pitching in defense. And this team,
- 4:14Speaker 4: even though nobody really would compare the Cardinals and the
- 4:18Speaker 4: Phillies as being comfortable teams, you know, the Phillies are
- 4:21Speaker 4: a few games out of them and standings, But where
- 4:23Speaker 4: would the Phillies be if their offense had been really
- 4:27Speaker 4: good in the first two months of the season. This
- 4:29Speaker 4: team wouldn't be eight games behind the Braide right now.
- 4:31Speaker 4: They'd be two games behind, one game behind, maybe even
- 4:34Speaker 4: leading the division had their offense, you know, had a
- 4:36Speaker 4: really good start to the season. So that offense is
- 4:39Speaker 4: kind of what takes you over the top, because we've
- 4:42Speaker 4: seen teams like the Angels have really good offense consistently
- 4:45Speaker 4: throughout the year, but not have the pitching, and now
- 4:47Speaker 4: all of a sudden, they can't have any consistency at all.
- 4:50Speaker 4: So that pitching and defense is going to offer that consistency,
- 4:54Speaker 4: and the offense kind of takes you over the top.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I do want to point out that this last series
- 4:59Speaker 4: was the exact opposite of what we wanted them to do.
- 5:02Speaker 4: We thought they needed to take the first game against
- 5:04Speaker 4: Painter and then hopefully still one in the next two.
- 5:07Speaker 4: They got the first game stolen from him when the
- 5:09Speaker 4: Phillies didn't even have a bullpen. Maddeningly, whether he was
- 5:13Speaker 4: joking or not, said Garrett Stubbs was going to pitch
- 5:15Speaker 4: an extra any because it didn't have anybody. That's ridiculous. Uh,
- 5:19Speaker 4: And then they went out and beat two of the
- 5:20Speaker 4: best starters in in all the national leagues. So, you know, really,
- 5:24Speaker 4: really a big hat tip to the Cardinal team because
- 5:28Speaker 4: there could have been a little bit of a lull
- 5:30Speaker 4: after not winning a.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Game that you definitely thought that you should have won
- 5:32Speaker 2: on Monday.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And Painter was a guy who came in with an
- 5:36Speaker 1: ERA of six and been batting around a little bit
- 5:40Speaker 1: and all of a sudden looked really good. And then
- 5:42Speaker 1: the Cardinals locked it in against two of the best
- 5:45Speaker 1: pitchers in baseball. But let's talk about Polante stick scoreless
- 5:49Speaker 1: lance against the Phillies. You touched him, what he's been
- 5:52Speaker 1: doing this season. Over his last four starts, he's given
- 5:55Speaker 1: up three runs. I mean you talked about Polante doesn't
- 5:59Speaker 1: have that mesmerizing stuff. He's just consistent and he knows
- 6:04Speaker 1: how to get guys out right. I mean, that's just
- 6:06Speaker 1: really what it's all about, isn't it.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Yeah, he keeps spalling the ballpark too, Right. If you
- 6:11Speaker 3: look at Polonte when he has success, he doesn't walk people,
- 6:15Speaker 3: keeps ball on the ground and minimizes innings. What he's
- 6:19Speaker 3: doing what he did last year was he walked too
- 6:21Speaker 3: many guys. There's really no other way to say. He's
- 6:24Speaker 3: kind of in that last year's boat was kind of
- 6:26Speaker 3: what Libby's in right now, where you're walking too many
- 6:29Speaker 3: guys and your numbers are gonna be a little bit
- 6:30Speaker 3: inflated based because of that, you're giving up free base
- 6:34Speaker 3: runners and you're gonna get yourself hurt. So he's minimizing
- 6:37Speaker 3: that he knows how to pitch. He's added the elements
- 6:40Speaker 3: that got him in trouble last year, and when you
- 6:42Speaker 3: have a trump card or another way to get someone out,
- 6:48Speaker 3: it makes you more confident to fill up his own.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So he's added he's added all the pitches that he
- 6:53Speaker 3: needs to to be a bona fide big league starter,
- 6:56Speaker 3: and now he's using the way they're supposed to be
- 6:58Speaker 3: doing and he's not walking people and you in the
- 7:00Speaker 3: strike und So when he does that and attacks people
- 7:03Speaker 3: with his with his pitch mix, he's he's hard to
- 7:06Speaker 3: hit because he's just funky with the way he throws
- 7:08Speaker 3: the ball and kind of his his metrics on some
- 7:10Speaker 3: of his pitches are not what you see day in
- 7:12Speaker 3: and day out, So he's using that to advantage and
- 7:15Speaker 3: you got to love what he's turning himself into. And
- 7:18Speaker 3: Kyle and I have talked about this a long time.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Plante wants to be good. It's not like he's stubborn
- 7:24Speaker 3: and like, hey, I'm going to be set my ways.
- 7:26Speaker 3: He almost like knows that he starts to tinker before
- 7:29Speaker 3: he's ready to tinker. But now they've done a good
- 7:32Speaker 3: job of slowly building this in by some of the
- 7:36Speaker 3: ups and downs he's had last year, and now he's
- 7:38Speaker 3: been able to use that to add on this year,
- 7:40Speaker 3: and you're seeing the seeing the proof of the work
- 7:42Speaker 3: he's put in and what he's added to his arsenal
- 7:44Speaker 3: as the year's gone on and his career has gone on.
- 7:48Speaker 1: In a world of swinging mis pitchers that are valued
- 7:51Speaker 1: strictly by their velo, Kyle isn't Isn't Andre sort of
- 7:56Speaker 1: a throwback to what pitching is about.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I mean, I I think he has kind of the
- 8:00Speaker 4: best of both worlds here. He actually does get the
- 8:03Speaker 4: v little mid to upper nineties at times. I don't
- 8:05Speaker 4: know what he was the other day, but you know
- 8:07Speaker 4: he throws the ball hard. Lance said, you know, he's
- 8:09Speaker 4: got a funky delivery. Funky stuff. It's very different. So
- 8:13Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, and I think the more that he's
- 8:15Speaker 4: been in the rotation and really challenged himself with throwing
- 8:21Speaker 4: pitches to both sides of the plate, challenging himself to
- 8:24Speaker 4: really work through in a bat and set hitters up
- 8:27Speaker 4: and you know, use its pitchability and use tunneling. I
- 8:31Speaker 4: think that's one reason why he's only gotten better, you
- 8:34Speaker 4: know in the bullpen, when when he was down there,
- 8:36Speaker 4: it was hey, throw your stuff to the middle of
- 8:38Speaker 4: the plate.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Let it work to the.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Edges and go from there. Well, yeah, I think that
- 8:43Speaker 4: works depending on the stuff over a couple of innings,
- 8:46Speaker 4: but over six innies, seven innings of work. You know,
- 8:50Speaker 4: the more pitches that you throw toward the middle, the
- 8:52Speaker 4: more that are going to end up in the middle.
- 8:54Speaker 4: And it's just not an ideal scenario when you start
- 8:58Speaker 4: hitting your spots, which is the middle of the plate.
- 9:02Speaker 2: It's guys.
- 9:02Speaker 4: One thing that he's done is you know, mixing that
- 9:04Speaker 4: two steamer to both sides of the plate. You know,
- 9:07Speaker 4: using his fastball on both sides and being able to
- 9:09Speaker 4: use his off speed to get back in and counts
- 9:11Speaker 4: is really important for him.
- 9:12Speaker 1: So it's the time of the year where maybe it's
- 9:15Speaker 1: starting to get a little cooler. Hopefully weather's still great,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, the summers winding down to our certain extent,
- 9:22Speaker 1: kids going back to school. Now you think about it,
- 9:24Speaker 1: all right, what things can we get out and go?
- 9:26Speaker 2: See?
- 9:26Speaker 1: What would I like to do? And that's where our
- 9:28Speaker 1: friends at seat geek come into the picture. They have

- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask you about this because we we we we're.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Just gonna act like this isn't here. Tim, You're just
- 10:06Speaker 4: gonna act like this is on my shoulder right now.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Don't give him the time of day, don't give him
- 10:09Speaker 3: y You just gonna.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Act like fans just a fantasy a football belt from
- 10:15Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. My bad.
- 10:17Speaker 4: You know, we're just just cleaning some things out my spots.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Son found it. Thanks buddy, appreciate you bringing that. Yep,
- 10:22Speaker 4: just thank you.
- 10:23Speaker 2: All right, go ahead, what were we gonna say, Jim,
- 10:24Speaker 2: You're just gonna.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on, I try to be fair Lynce.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Do you have any knick knacks that you want to
- 10:30Speaker 1: show off?
- 10:31Speaker 3: I have a feeling that I'm not at home today,
- 10:33Speaker 3: so we're good.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And then the guest Bedrid. All I have is uh
- 10:38Speaker 1: a bottle of water. Hey, I got the bottle of water. Well, Kyle,
- 10:42Speaker 1: we talked about Libby last show. You brought him up,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and Lenz brought him up earlier, so he's gonna stay
- 10:48Speaker 1: in the rotation. We were debating whether the best move
- 10:52Speaker 1: for for Libby, for him and the team.
- 10:55Speaker 3: You were you were, you were debating sitting out of
- 10:57Speaker 3: the bullpen. You've been wanting to do it all year.
- 11:02Speaker 1: No, that's a lie. That is a lie.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Disappointment and the bullpen. That's what I've heard all year.
- 11:10Speaker 1: All right, let me just say this. I hope none
- 11:12Speaker 1: of these current players ever see this podcast because the
- 11:15Speaker 1: way you frame things, you make it look like I'm
- 11:19Speaker 1: dropping dirt.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I don't you know what.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Let's see it was it was Stannic the other day,
- 11:26Speaker 4: so you know he he gave Stanik a good interview
- 11:28Speaker 4: because he came in baseblok no outs. I think he's
- 11:32Speaker 4: been a fan of Standic all you, Jim, do you
- 11:34Speaker 4: pick the interviews after the game, because I kind of
- 11:36Speaker 4: feel like you avoid certain plays. But he's not having
- 11:40Speaker 4: to worry about having to interview these guys because he picks.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So no.
- 11:46Speaker 1: First off, just again, sometimes you have to let facts
- 11:50Speaker 1: get in the way of the nonsense. Of course, starting
- 11:53Speaker 1: picture like you the starting pictures like you were Lance.
- 11:56Speaker 1: After you pitch your innings, you go inside, do whatever
- 12:00Speaker 1: you're doing there, and you don't come back out, So
- 12:03Speaker 1: you're not there to be interviewed on the field unless
- 12:06Speaker 1: you throw a complete game, maybe go eight innings, then
- 12:10Speaker 1: you're there. Otherwise they're not there. I love talking to
- 12:13Speaker 1: a picture does well. That's why I interviewed stannin. Let's
- 12:17Speaker 1: talk about Libby, who I love, by the way, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: believe he is going to be a good major league pitcher.
- 12:23Speaker 1: The Cardinals are keeping him in the rotation. Do you
- 12:27Speaker 1: start right, move You've got to start.
- 12:32Speaker 4: I believe, I do believe, I do believe against some
- 12:40Speaker 4: public opinion. I'm not gonna say it's your opinion, but
- 12:43Speaker 4: I do believe, against some opinion, that Libby should stay
- 12:47Speaker 4: in the rotation. I think, you know, one of the
- 12:50Speaker 4: one of the things that you wanted to talk about
- 12:52Speaker 4: here today was development from always perspective and for the organization.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And if I had the guess, Libertore is somebody that
- 13:01Speaker 4: Hey and Bloom wanted to see thirty to thirty three
- 13:04Speaker 4: starts out of and see where he's going to be
- 13:07Speaker 4: and make a decision possibly going forward on if he's
- 13:10Speaker 4: going to be in that rotation or if you move
- 13:12Speaker 4: him back to the pen. You give him that full
- 13:15Speaker 4: season unless it's very clear that he can't do it,
- 13:17Speaker 4: which I do.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Not think that is the case. I don't think it's
- 13:20Speaker 2: been very clear.
- 13:21Speaker 4: And I think he stays in there, and you give
- 13:24Speaker 4: him this last month and a half and you let
- 13:27Speaker 4: him go out there and keep pitching. Because sure, once
- 13:30Speaker 4: I brought this up last time, yes, it's been priest
- 13:32Speaker 4: for Famine. He's had clunkers, don't get me wrong, but
- 13:35Speaker 4: he's also been very good at times, and the starting
- 13:38Speaker 4: pitcher normally unless you just have an average out and
- 13:41Speaker 4: you either win the game for the team, or you
- 13:43Speaker 4: lose the game for the team. That's kind of what
- 13:45Speaker 4: makes the starting pitcher have a little bit of extra
- 13:48Speaker 4: stress on it. When he's pitched well, the team is won,
- 13:51Speaker 4: and I think he's pitched well enough to keep giving
- 13:54Speaker 4: him the next month and a half.
- 13:56Speaker 1: All right, And Lance, you're the guy that's I'm not
- 14:01Speaker 1: even gonna put anything on you, your Lance Lint. You
- 14:05Speaker 1: think the Cardinals are doing the right thing by this,
- 14:07Speaker 1: by Libby in this situation.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah, for them and Libby to be honest with you.
- 14:12Speaker 3: And then the question is like who would start for him,
- 14:15Speaker 3: Quinn Matthews. Quinn Matthews needs to be up there starting anyways,
- 14:18Speaker 3: and they need to have six man rotation just to
- 14:20Speaker 3: save everybody down the stretch. So I think that they're
- 14:23Speaker 3: pretty much telling you we're going to give these guys
- 14:25Speaker 3: a break at the end here at some point when
- 14:28Speaker 3: we add our younger starter, uh with it's Quinn or
- 14:32Speaker 3: whatever they're going to do, but they're going to go
- 14:34Speaker 3: six man at some point within the within the last month,
- 14:38Speaker 3: and that's what they're going to do. So I don't
- 14:40Speaker 3: think you can sit here and say I think Quinn
- 14:43Speaker 3: is going to be a needs to need to have
- 14:48Speaker 3: these innings over Libby. I think Libby is an advance
- 14:51Speaker 3: more advanced than he is, and so he should get
- 14:53Speaker 3: these innings because he's got a faster chance be a
- 14:57Speaker 3: playoff caliber rotation arm compared to a guy who's been
- 15:00Speaker 3: in triple A and has what one big lead to start.
- 15:04Speaker 1: We're talking about Olie Marmel, the Cardinals manager. We're gonna
- 15:08Speaker 1: put him in the crosshairs. Been a good way after
- 15:12Speaker 1: this short time out. You're watching Cardinal Territory on the
- 15:15Speaker 1: FINL Territory Network.
- 15:19Speaker 5: Science experiment. For the one minute, we have to tell
- 15:21Speaker 5: you about why we love Quint's electrolytes, including watermelon salt,
- 15:25Speaker 5: raspberry salt. And I'm holding a citrus salt, just opened
- 15:28Speaker 5: it and to pour some powder into my water, shake
- 15:31Speaker 5: it up, and AJ, why do you love it?
- 15:32Speaker 6: I love Quints because after a long night out, a
- 15:35Speaker 6: long day at the gym, a long walk in this
- 15:37Speaker 6: Florida humidity, it tastes great and it gives me all
- 15:39Speaker 6: the electrolytes I need. Why sugar free Stevy a free
- 15:44Speaker 6: keto approve and taste sweet because of that delicious fermented rice.
- 15:50Speaker 5: It does taste really good. I'm drinking it right now

- 16:18Speaker 1: So before the break we were I think it was
- 16:20Speaker 1: Kyle mentioned Ali Marmel managing to win games but also
- 16:26Speaker 1: with an eye toward development, and I think we can
- 16:29Speaker 1: see that in some of the things he does that
- 16:33Speaker 1: the Cardinals are thinking long range while trying to win
- 16:36Speaker 1: the game that's in front of him. I think he's
- 16:38Speaker 1: doing a very good job. Hard to manage something like
- 16:43Speaker 1: that at times, right without you looking like you're the
- 16:46Speaker 1: guy that's messing up.
- 16:48Speaker 3: In my opinion, you have to do.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Certain things to give guys runway, and maybe you know
- 16:54Speaker 1: it doesn't look pretty all the time.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, I think it's I think it is
- 17:01Speaker 4: the hardest part for I think it's the hardest part
- 17:03Speaker 4: for a manager and a instence, and most of the time,
- 17:09Speaker 4: I don't know if it'd be interesting to see. Atlanta agrees.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Most of the time it doesn't work out where your
- 17:15Speaker 4: team plays well like this and then the manager gets
- 17:18Speaker 4: fired halfway through the year, when conversations in spring training
- 17:23Speaker 4: were all about development and we're not gonna win and
- 17:26Speaker 4: we're just trying to get guys better, and then halfway
- 17:29Speaker 4: through the year they fire the guy for what. You know,
- 17:33Speaker 4: you told him it wasn't gonna win. So no, I
- 17:36Speaker 4: think it's I think it's been a great job by
- 17:38Speaker 4: all of this year. Obviously, the players have played really
- 17:41Speaker 4: well and have made some decisions probably hard on them,
- 17:44Speaker 4: and have made a lot of the decisions easy on
- 17:46Speaker 4: them as well, because when players play how they're supposed to.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I think a lot of managers will tell you managing
- 17:52Speaker 4: the game gets a whole lot easier. And when you're
- 17:55Speaker 4: seeing the development from players at the same time, I
- 17:58Speaker 4: think it's an extra benefit. I think we could probably
- 18:01Speaker 4: go up and down this roster and see areas where
- 18:05Speaker 4: guys have gotten better pretty consistently. Are there players that
- 18:10Speaker 4: have taken steps back? I'm sure I'll leave that for
- 18:13Speaker 4: other people to debate, but I think a lot through
- 18:16Speaker 4: this lineup players have gotten better and they're talking about
- 18:19Speaker 4: how they're getting better. So I think it's been a
- 18:21Speaker 4: successful year, and hopefully the next month and a half
- 18:24Speaker 4: they can keep pushing and you know, stay in this
- 18:27Speaker 4: race up until the last few days and maybe sneaking out.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 18:30Speaker 1: And I think Lance is a tough part for Ali
- 18:34Speaker 1: because he's a good soldier too. He's not gonna say, look,
- 18:37Speaker 1: this is what I've been given. Right, you're the manager.
- 18:40Speaker 1: You can't say don't look at me, look at somewhere else.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Ali has worn it, I think when he has to
- 18:46Speaker 1: for some decisions that I think we're based on we
- 18:50Speaker 1: got to see what this guy is, We got to
- 18:52Speaker 1: see what this guy can do. And he has to
- 18:54Speaker 1: be a good soldier.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah he does. And I think a lot of the
- 18:59Speaker 3: decisions on got to see what this guy can do?
- 19:01Speaker 3: What do we have here have been kind of obvious,
- 19:06Speaker 3: so that I think that helps the situation. For the
- 19:09Speaker 3: most part, we started the year with Victor and center
- 19:11Speaker 3: and Gorman at third. That was the obvious start to development, right,
- 19:15Speaker 3: But they've let other people. Other people have a chance
- 19:18Speaker 3: instead of keep letting those guys fail and or saying, oh, well,
- 19:21Speaker 3: we're going to lose and develop, they're developing to win
- 19:24Speaker 3: and have a winning culture at the same time, which
- 19:26Speaker 3: is good guys that are playing well underneath them and
- 19:28Speaker 3: triple A. When guys aren't getting their job if they
- 19:30Speaker 3: have options, they're moving them out and they're moving guys in.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Same with bullpen arms. Like if you want to say, hey,
- 19:36Speaker 3: they've only been worrying about development all year, then all
- 19:38Speaker 3: these guys that they were high on will still be
- 19:41Speaker 3: up here hitting two hundred and you've got to let
- 19:43Speaker 3: them play it out with development. They got to do
- 19:45Speaker 3: it the big leagues. They're not doing that. They're putting
- 19:47Speaker 3: guys that are going to give them quality day in
- 19:51Speaker 3: and day out, and whoever's hot they're playing them and
- 19:53Speaker 3: stuff like that. So they are developing and they're developing
- 19:56Speaker 3: a winning culture at the same time. And let him know,
- 19:58Speaker 3: you can't just come up here and fail and not
- 20:00Speaker 3: change anything. You're gonna have to get better every day
- 20:03Speaker 3: and if you're not doing that, then you're not going
- 20:04Speaker 3: to have any playing time. Guys that are getting better
- 20:06Speaker 3: every day are getting to play.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Getting the runway can be really good. Getting the runway
- 20:11Speaker 4: can be really good. But you also can create a
- 20:14Speaker 4: culture similar to what Lance is saying is that there's
- 20:16Speaker 4: there's no expectation of success and as long as you're
- 20:20Speaker 4: here and we like you, you're gonna stay here and
- 20:22Speaker 4: we're just gonna, you know, let you ride it out.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I don't think that that necessarily breeds a successful culture,
- 20:29Speaker 4: because then at some point you're gonna have a player
- 20:31Speaker 4: who gets a little bit resentful because when you start winning,
- 20:34Speaker 4: he's not going to be getting the runway that he
- 20:36Speaker 4: thought he should get because a year ago another player
- 20:39Speaker 4: got the runway. So I think it's it's a winning
- 20:42Speaker 4: culture to allow guys to develop up here if they're
- 20:46Speaker 4: playing well, and then sending them to Triple A if
- 20:49Speaker 4: they need more seasoning, and if they're not developing and
- 20:53Speaker 4: having success at the same time. So Lance makes a
- 20:56Speaker 4: good point there. You can you can create a bad
- 20:58Speaker 4: culture really quick by creating what you believe is a
- 21:01Speaker 4: developmental culture.
- 21:03Speaker 3: All right, both good points.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I have two topics before we close it out. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: think you guys might swap them away either way. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: the Cardinals did something which I thought was interesting and
- 21:15Speaker 1: I thought I think was well. I didn't care about
- 21:17Speaker 1: it either way. I think the Cardinals have iconic uniforms.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think the specialty uniforms are really cool. I think
- 21:23Speaker 1: they have a really good handle on that. But they
- 21:26Speaker 1: decided to listen to the fans because they put out
- 21:28Speaker 1: a survey and the fans love those Navy caps on
- 21:31Speaker 1: the road. So that's what the Cardinals are gonna do.
- 21:34Speaker 1: More Navy caps. Lance, you you played for this team
- 21:37Speaker 1: a couple of times? Are you pro Navy caps?
- 21:41Speaker 3: I love the road Navy caps with the gray. That
- 21:45Speaker 3: was how I came up. That's what I enjoyed when
- 21:47Speaker 3: I played. And I love when you you know, when
- 21:50Speaker 3: you're wearing your red, when you're wearing your red hat
- 21:52Speaker 3: with your whites at home. I'm I'm all for that,
- 21:55Speaker 3: I tell y'all, I'm all on board. There's really nothing
- 21:58Speaker 3: else to say, all right about you, Kyle.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I mean it's a great combination, great combination the Navy
- 22:04Speaker 4: with the grand red.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I think this is this is also to me where
- 22:11Speaker 4: you give the fans a little bit of a say
- 22:14Speaker 4: on what they see. Yeah, I think we you know,
- 22:17Speaker 4: we try to give the fan involvement, whether it's voting
- 22:19Speaker 4: for All Stars or you know, complaining about the front
- 22:22Speaker 4: office whatever it is, wanting players sent down like this
- 22:26Speaker 4: is exactly where I think the fans appreciation comes in
- 22:29Speaker 4: and says, all right, we'll hear you.
- 22:30Speaker 2: We're gonna do more of this, right.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Last thing, So on social media, Paul schemes great picture.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Uh there's some beach photos of him, uh with his
- 22:43Speaker 1: lovely girlfriend wife. I don't know anyway, people are like
- 22:46Speaker 1: looking at him and saying, he's not a professional athlete,
- 22:50Speaker 1: he's not in shape. And I'm thinking to myself, first
- 22:53Speaker 1: of all, two things, baseball players are different, maybe than
- 22:57Speaker 1: other sports, but especially pictures. Now, you had a beach
- 23:01Speaker 1: body one time as a pitcher, and it didn't really
- 23:05Speaker 1: suit you in terms of your your pitching. So can
- 23:08Speaker 1: you please explain to the layman like me that sometimes
- 23:12Speaker 1: as a pitcher you can't conform to the esthetics of
- 23:16Speaker 1: what culture would call a beach body.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you got to think you got two
- 23:21Speaker 3: different guys with two different bodies. On this podcast, Kyle's
- 23:24Speaker 3: the you know, the bean pole and I'm the you know,
- 23:27Speaker 3: the willbarrow Like there's really no other way.
- 23:29Speaker 2: To say it.
- 23:30Speaker 3: So there's different ways for everyone to do things. When
- 23:35Speaker 3: I lost the weight and got skinny, I threw softer
- 23:37Speaker 3: and got hurt. If Kyle were to gain weight because
- 23:41Speaker 3: they said he's too skinny, he might get himself hurt.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Or his body might not move the same and he
- 23:46Speaker 3: might throw softer, or you could throw harder. There's all
- 23:49Speaker 3: kinds of different ways. You just got to figure out
- 23:51Speaker 3: your body and what it does for you. And I
- 23:53Speaker 3: found that if I pitched above a certain way, I
- 23:56Speaker 3: did better than I did below that way. Now you
- 23:59Speaker 3: can also get two big. You know, if you get
- 24:01Speaker 3: too big and you start hurting things, that's a that's
- 24:03Speaker 3: a thing too. Or guys get too jacked and they
- 24:05Speaker 3: get themselves hurt. So it's what everybody's different. Everybody's everybody
- 24:11Speaker 3: moves differently. And as long as Skins knows how his
- 24:13Speaker 3: body moves and knows what his weight and stuff needs
- 24:15Speaker 3: to be to do what he needs to do. And
- 24:18Speaker 3: so yeah, pictures are different. They're different animals. And I
- 24:22Speaker 3: agree some of the most jack position players never stay
- 24:24Speaker 3: on the field, but they might be the most physically
- 24:27Speaker 3: fit looking people. But when you're never on the field
- 24:30Speaker 3: because you're hurt, it doesn't matter how good you look
- 24:33Speaker 3: in your body. Kyle and I were both on the
- 24:35Speaker 3: field a lot, and our bodies are totally different. So
- 24:38Speaker 3: that tells you what you need to know right there.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Right, Pictures we see all different shapes and sizes, more
- 24:44Speaker 1: so with pictures than maybe any other position.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I would agree. I think there was a time
- 24:51Speaker 4: in my career where I tried to get over around
- 24:55Speaker 4: like to twenty and I noticeably, like Land said, I
- 25:00Speaker 4: felt a different you know, athleticism moving off the mound.
- 25:04Speaker 4: I didn't like it. I didn't throw any harder. I
- 25:09Speaker 4: thought I was probably as stronger stronger than I had been,
- 25:14Speaker 4: and I just didn't feel great. So my kind of
- 25:16Speaker 4: before I had my stomach issues in twenty nineteen and
- 25:19Speaker 4: lost all that weight and I to gain it back.
- 25:21Speaker 4: But my kind of sweet spot was two five to
- 25:23Speaker 4: two ten. I lived there, you know, after I'd developed
- 25:27Speaker 4: the stomach stuff. It was two hundred to two five,
- 25:30Speaker 4: you know, is where I had to stay. But yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 4: it was. Uh, there's definitely a area that pictures should be.
- 25:38Speaker 4: And like Land said, you figure out where you are
- 25:41Speaker 4: best suited, and it takes a little bit to get
- 25:45Speaker 4: yourself out of that because your body, let's basically, you've
- 25:47Speaker 4: been doing this for at probably by the time you're
- 25:50Speaker 4: thirty years old, you've been doing it for twenty years
- 25:54Speaker 4: and growing into what you've done. Trying to change that
- 25:58Speaker 4: at that point, you know, can be kind of tough.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Probably leads to induril all the time.
- 26:02Speaker 1: The moral of the story, body shaming is bad, especially
- 26:05Speaker 1: from Major League Pictures. That's gonna do it for this
- 26:08Speaker 1: edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you next time. Hopefully
- 26:11Speaker 1: that episode won't suck.
