- 0:00Hey you guys, it's friends. Lee, welcome back to another
- 0:03episode. Thanks for joining me on In the
- 0:05Stillness. Before we even get into the
- 0:09content and reading the passage today, I want to start by
- 0:13praying. Umm, I have just been feeling a
- 0:16lot of different emotions this week with a loss that's been
- 0:19close to me. And so I just want to call on
- 0:22the Lord for strength as I speak.
- 0:24So with that, let's go ahead and bow our heads.
- 0:27Father, I need your strength right now.
- 0:32This passage is it's tender, it's weighty, but it's also so
- 0:38hope filled. You know, the loss that is made
- 0:42these verses hit differently, whether that be for me or for
- 0:45whoever is listening right now. So I just ask that you would
- 0:49speak through me that anything from me, from my flesh, that it
- 0:53would fall away, and that what is from you would land exactly
- 0:59where it needs to. To whoever is listening to this
- 1:01right now, would you comfort us together?
- 1:05And as you comfort us, would you teach us how to comfort others
- 1:08with the same comfort that we receive from you?
- 1:12We love you, Jesus. Amen.
- 1:15OK, so I'm just going to go ahead and begin reading it.
- 1:19We're going to be in First Thessalonians chapter 4, verses
- 1:2313 through 18 today. Brothers and sisters, we do not
- 1:29want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death so that
- 1:32you do not grieve like the rest of mankind who have no hope for.
- 1:37We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe
- 1:42that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in
- 1:45Him according to the Lord's Word.
- 1:48We tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until
- 1:52the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who
- 1:56have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will come
- 1:59down from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the
- 2:03Archangel, and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in
- 2:08Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still
- 2:12alive and are left will be caught up together with them in
- 2:16the clouds to meet the Lord and the air.
- 2:19And so we will be with the Lord forever.
- 2:23Therefore encourage one another with these words.
- 2:28OK, this passage, I think it starts in an interesting way
- 2:33because Paul begins by addressing misunderstanding,
- 2:36misinfo, and I couldn't stop thinking about this flow.
- 2:40I'm very visual, so sometimes I like to write it in a little
- 2:44chart, and I wrote it with arrows.
- 2:46I wrote misunderstanding leads to grief, which leads to a loss
- 2:51of hope and eventually a loss of peace.
- 2:55And I was thinking about it. That spiral that is the enemy's
- 2:59playground, y'all? Because the devil is literally
- 3:02called the deceiver. So if he can distort truth or
- 3:06distract us from what our living hope is in Jesus, he can pull us
- 3:11into momentary troubles and he can make them feel ultimate.
- 3:16And it's when that happens that we start to lose awareness and
- 3:20sensitivity of the Lord's presence and nearness, because
- 3:24in Psalm 1611, it says that in the Lord's presence is where
- 3:29there is fullness of joy. So Paul steps in to correct this
- 3:34misunderstanding. And I've read this passage
- 3:38before, but this week it felt different.
- 3:42Paul says he doesn't want us to grieve like the rest of mankind
- 3:46who have no hope. Notice that he doesn't say don't
- 3:50grieve. He says don't grieve without
- 3:53hope. We see in Ecclesiastes chapter
- 3:573, verse four that there is a time to weep and there is a time
- 4:02to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
- 4:06There are seasons for everything under the sun.
- 4:09And in Romans 12/15 it says to mourn with those who mourn and
- 4:12rejoice with those who rejoice. But we're not meant to remain in
- 4:17a state of hopeless sorrow like everyone else in this world.
- 4:22And I love this. Scripture often calls death
- 4:24sleep. So why sleep?
- 4:29Because sleep implies waking up. It's not minimizing pain when
- 4:35the Bible calls death sleep. It's reframing finality.
- 4:40It's saying this is not the end of the story.
- 4:43This is temporary rest before your awakening.
- 4:46God calls it sleep because he sees the wake up.
- 4:49He sees the bigger picture. And it's interesting because two
- 4:54of my friends on two different walks, we were not together, but
- 4:58they brought up how the Lord has been speaking to them about
- 5:01this, about how Jesus said Lazarus was asleep and how he
- 5:06said in another story that there was a 12 year old girl and she
- 5:10was said to be dead, but she was only sleeping.
- 5:14And it's because it's not meant to make us sad.
- 5:18It's meant to anchor us in a resurrection hope.
- 5:22So This is why the full Gospel matters, because it's not just
- 5:27the crucifixion that's significant, it's the
- 5:29resurrection too. Without Jesus's resurrection, we
- 5:34don't have this living hope. Romans 65 says that if we have
- 5:38been united with him in a death like His, we will certainly also
- 5:43be united with Jesus in a resurrection like his.
- 5:47And that resurrection life, it doesn't just start one day once
- 5:51we hit eternal life. It begins the moment that you
- 5:54believe and you declare Jesus as Lord of your life.
- 5:58Because when you surrender your life to Christ, you accept His
- 6:02death and resurrection on your behalf, which means you're not
- 6:06meant to stay buried. And what once buried you?
- 6:10We're not called to return to the grave close.
- 6:13We're not called to go back to what He brought us out of y'all,
- 6:16our earthly death. It is an entryway into eternal
- 6:21joy, our real life, into the physical presence of our King.
- 6:26We're meant to be unashamed in His presence.
- 6:28We're whole, we're content. That's what we were made for.
- 6:32And with this, it changes how we grieve because it doesn't erase
- 6:38the ache, but it transforms it. And I found it can even stir
- 6:44something unexpected. Gratitude, thankfulness for the
- 6:48gift of someone's life when they pass, even excitement knowing
- 6:53that they have overcome the troubles of this world and
- 6:56they're with Jesus, without the pain, without the sorrow on this
- 7:01side of eternity. And so then we see Paul paint
- 7:04the picture of Christ's return. And this is one of the most
- 7:08vivid portrayals in the Bible. We see in his writing.
- 7:12He says the Lord himself will come down, He will descend with
- 7:16a loud command, with the voice of the Archangel, with the
- 7:20trumpet call of God. This is not subtle and this is
- 7:25not anticlimactic. You'll know how sometimes in
- 7:28this life you can work for something and wait and build
- 7:32something up in your mind. And then sometimes when it
- 7:35actually comes, it's kind of underwhelming.
- 7:38But y'all, this is not that. This will be victory.
- 7:42We can't even fathom what it's going to be like because it's
- 7:44going to be so great. This is our encounter with our
- 7:47Bridegroom. And the same love that holds the
- 7:52church and the body of believers together here on earth is the
- 7:56same love that will unite us with believers forever.
- 8:00It's a bond that cannot be broken because God is love and
- 8:05we're joined in union to Him. God turns our tragedy to
- 8:11triumph. He turns our poverty to riches
- 8:14and wealth pain to glory. He takes us from defeat to
- 8:19victory. And it feels upside down
- 8:23compared to this world, but that's because we serve an
- 8:26upside down Kingdom. Hebrews 11/1 says faith is
- 8:30confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we
- 8:34don't see. 2nd Corinthians 418 commands us to fix our eyes not
- 8:39on what is seen, but on what is unseen, because what is seen is
- 8:43temporary. What is on the earth, it's
- 8:45fleeting, but what is unseen, that's what's eternal.
- 8:51And we know that God's word is true.
- 8:54Guys, it has been proven. It has been fulfilled.
- 8:57Prophecies upon prophecy, faithfulness across thousands of
- 9:01years. I just want us to reflect on
- 9:03this really quick. Has God ever not delivered what
- 9:07He said He would deliver? Has He ever not done better than
- 9:10you imagined? Ephesians 320 He does
- 9:14immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine, even if the
- 9:18timing stretched you. Has He ever truly let you down?
- 9:24God is a keeper of His promises. Second Corinthians 610 Paul
- 9:30describes himself as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, poor yet
- 9:36making many rich, having nothing and yet possessing everything.
- 9:43That was a passage that I really cling to in one of the hardest
- 9:47seasons of my life, my freshman year, and it brought so much
- 9:52hope and encouragement. But it also reminded me that how
- 9:56we view our momentary troubles right now, it says a lot about
- 10:00how we view our good Father. Yes, there is a time to mourn,
- 10:06but we are not meant to dwell in it.
- 10:08Verse 17 here says, And so we will be with the Lord forever.
- 10:14Just think about forever. It's one of those things where
- 10:17we can't even comprehend it. Our finite brains can't go to
- 10:21that concept. But this world is not our home.
- 10:25So when we are taken from here, we are transported to our real
- 10:30home, not into an absence, but into presence, the presence of
- 10:35our Father. So I just want to say, if you're
- 10:40grieving right now like I am, or if you know someone who is, let
- 10:46this truth comfort you and study you.
- 10:49Sleep is not the end. One day the trumpet will sound,
- 10:54the King will come, and we will be with him into eternity.
- 10:59So my encouragement for y'all is hold on to that hope.
- 11:04Maybe you have experienced losing a loved one, or you know
- 11:09someone who has, or maybe you're just going through a really hard
- 11:12season. Let this hope lift your eyes
- 11:15past the moment. Let it soften your grief without
- 11:19silencing it. Let it remind you that this
- 11:22story, it ends in victory when you trust in Jesus as your Lord
- 11:26and Savior. So this is what was really
- 11:29sitting on my heart as I went through this quiet time.
- 11:31And my hope is that you can really be uplifted and that you
- 11:40can just be reminded to cling to the living hope that we have in
- 11:43Jesus. I will see y'all on the next
- 11:45episode. Have a great day.
