- 0:43in stock right now. There he is, one of the most
- 0:50famous racing promoters of all time, the owner, the promoter of
- 0:56Springfield Raceway in Springfield, MO.
- 1:00My long time friend Jerry Hoffman.
- 1:05Good morning. Kitty.
- 1:06Hi, Jerry. Hey, you got a beautiful dog
- 1:10there. I love the horns above your
- 1:12head. Tell me about those horns first
- 1:15of all. Well, those horns come from my
- 1:17fiance. I was happily married for a lot
- 1:20of years and then sometimes things get unhappily and you go
- 1:23through things divorce. But I got these horns from me.
- 1:25Move this over here from my fiance.
- 1:28Yeah, very nice. Can you see those?
- 1:30Take, he said. Take those out to the racetrack
- 1:33once and and like Jimmy Spencer says, you mess with the bull,
- 1:38you get the horn and there you go.
- 1:40You get the horns. You get the horns.
- 1:43But I told her, I said if something happens between us, I
- 1:45get the horns, right? She says.
- 1:46She can have the horns, Gary. Yeah, So what about that little
- 1:51doggy? That's my dog, Festus.
- 1:54Who's that dog, Festus? Window.
- 1:56Yeah, he sits in the window and looks out there to the north.
- 1:59That's where I do all my thinking, Kenny.
- 2:01Look to the north. How far is the Springfield
- 2:04Raceway dirt Track 62? Miles takes 52 minutes.
- 2:08Oh my God, you drive that all the time.
- 2:11Yeah, couple times a week usually.
- 2:13Wow, this kind of reminds me of me having a conversation with
- 2:17Brian Deegan, Hayley Deegan's dad.
- 2:19He he just had a phone on the couch and it was fantastic and
- 2:25he was wiggling it all around. But I'm going to get this set
- 2:27back again and Charlie told me to stack it, so I got it
- 2:29stacked. Yeah, well, we wanted you to
- 2:31look good. Hey, I do.
- 2:33I. Lost 9 1/4 lbs Kenny.
- 2:35Nine and a quarter. That's good.
- 2:38Jerry Hoffman, ladies and gentlemen, you're looking at
- 2:40him. Let me just say a couple things,
- 2:43Jerry. First before we start talking.
- 2:46The man you're looking at right now is and was a great race car
- 2:51driver. 1A boatload of features, one of the best.
- 2:57And we're going to talk about it, Jerry, But then all of a
- 3:00sudden decided to buy Springfield, MO Raceway, the
- 3:05dirt track right off Interstate 44 right there.
- 3:10You know, in Springfield, MO, you're looking at him.
- 3:13He has become one of the most popular promoters and great
- 3:17promoters I know, Jerry. A lot of people get tired of me
- 3:20saying this person is great. So I said, I'm going to say he's
- 3:24popular and you are great. Jerry, Let's start like this.
- 3:29What made you become a promoter after winning so much in dirt
- 3:35racing? Well, it's just like all racers,
- 3:38you know, you go race all these tracks and you always think you
- 3:40can do it better. I mean, it's the armchair
- 3:42quarterback, Joe the plumber. And you always want to have one
- 3:45because it's something you love, you know, and you want to be
- 3:47part of. So I've seen one was going to be
- 3:50for coming for sale. And I talked to a buddy, Doug
- 3:52Bland, and Doug had other things going on and I kept burning Doug
- 3:56down. Let's buy this deal.
- 3:57Let's buy this deal. And Doug said you get everything
- 3:59arranged and I'll come in and be your partner.
- 4:01So I got everything arranged, all those legality stuff set up
- 4:04and everything and got a hold of Doug.
- 4:06So we come in and we bought it together.
- 4:08We've leased it for a year and then we bought it after that.
- 4:11So Doug Bland was a big part of the beginning.
- 4:13And Doug had already had the ownership and been on the, he
- 4:17owned the Stacker 2 dirt Lake model series that used to be the
- 4:19Hava Tampa series. So he had had his education of
- 4:22dirt track racing and stuff like that.
- 4:24And he owned the was part owner of the Joplin Speedway here at
- 4:2766 and Joplin, MO. So him being my partner at the
- 4:30beginning really helped me out because I want to be like every
- 4:34racer when he gets a racetrack, I want to pay a bunch.
- 4:36Do this, do that, do that, do this.
- 4:38But here's what happens when you get 1.
- 4:40You get humbled quickly because reality sets in and it becomes a
- 4:44business. And to own and operate a
- 4:47racetrack as a business is a hard deal to make money because
- 4:51there's a lot of moving parts and there's a lot of you want to
- 4:55pay as much as you can. But sometimes it's an expense.
- 4:58I mean, for what you bring in for weekly shows, what you pay
- 5:01out. So that's how I got started with
- 5:02me and Doug together and always ran my mouth and said if I owned
- 5:07one, it will be the raciest one around.
- 5:09So because you are we're a great race car driver and now you own
- 5:16a racetrack, is it fair to say that race car drivers are a pain
- 5:20in the ass? Some are, yeah.
- 5:22And I can think back when I was a pain in the ass, too.
- 5:25Can we cuss or that? No, that's fine.
- 5:27That's fine. Yeah, you're.
- 5:28Good. I don't know how you do this
- 5:29without cussing because you get wound up and say the F word.
- 5:31I don't want to. I mean, I might, I am sorry,
- 5:33but. I am a cusser.
- 5:35A scene is good for me. It relieves my stress.
- 5:38I love the. Lord, he for everybody can pray
- 5:40for you. Yes, that's good.
- 5:41They pray for me. The Lord forgives me is my
- 5:43wicked tongue. OK, yes, back to your store,
- 5:46your question. Yes, race, race car drivers are
- 5:48hard to deal with. Some of them, some of them are
- 5:49great. It's humbled me a lot owning the
- 5:53race because I own it. I'm I own it.
- 5:55I actually pay the personal property taxes too.
- 5:56At the end of year. Doug helped me for a while
- 5:59there. We're together, we're partners.
- 6:00And then he wanted to go and do something else, so I bought him
- 6:03out. We're still buddies, we still
- 6:04talk. He still sees what's going on
- 6:06there. So I own it myself.
- 6:08And it is hard because you want to make everybody happy.
- 6:12You know, you want to make everybody happy.
- 6:14And it's hard to make people happy.
- 6:15It really is, but yes, it's way harder to do and make people
- 6:19happy than what I thought it would be I want.
- 6:21To ask you this question on the same same linearage, the same
- 6:27thing, but and then we're we're going to move on.
- 6:29OK. As a race car driver, we hear
- 6:32race car drivers complain all the time.
- 6:34The tracks too wet, you know, too rough, too dry.
- 6:38Rub it up. They're not paying enough money.
- 6:41I don't like the rules. So what don't the drivers
- 6:47understand? What don't they understand?
- 6:50It's a business they go to, they go to work each morning, whether
- 6:54they work for somebody else or they own their own business.
- 6:57They go to work to make money. They don't want to go to work
- 7:00and work for the plumbing company and owe the company,
- 7:03plumbing company, 2 or $300.00 a day.
- 7:05I mean, who the hell want to go to work and owe your employer 2
- 7:08or 300 a day? And on a racetrack, It's that
- 7:10way, I mean, or any business, you know, if you're a
- 7:12construction guy and you're doing a big job, you have the
- 7:16numbers. Well, what it takes to make
- 7:18money on the end of that job, Well, the racetrack, you don't
- 7:21know who's showing up each week. You don't know.
- 7:23It's like having a big party. I've got, this is the 18th year,
- 7:27so I've got an understanding what I have on weekly and what
- 7:29my specials are. But still you don't know.
- 7:32You fight the weather. So the biggest thing the race
- 7:34car drivers don't understand that.
- 7:35I didn't understand either. It's a business and there's a
- 7:38lot of work that goes into it and you're judged.
- 7:40You're judged and put on social media.
- 7:42Every my Rotor Brick Rd. grader breaks down, who are they going
- 7:44to do? They're going to laugh at me.
- 7:45You know, look, Jerry's old road grader broke down, have a flat
- 7:48tire. Look, his water truck broke down
- 7:49and all that's on social media and they can all put it out
- 7:52there. So it's the hardest thing.
- 7:54If the race car driver, they need to understand it's a
- 7:57business and you have to make money and you got to work hard
- 7:59at it too. You do, you really do.
- 8:01I mean, everybody works hard. Some works harder than others.
- 8:04I feel like I'm a go getter. I'm wound up, I'm a go getter
- 8:07and I'm going to get her done. You, you are my brother.
- 8:09I, I calm myself down to do these Kenny conversations.
- 8:13So let's get this. I want to tell everybody this
- 8:17right now, your marquee event in my world.
- 8:21So your marquee event is this November 14th, 1516, the Turkey
- 8:27Bowl. It's a legendary event.
- 8:29So many people come that we got cars everywhere.
- 8:34And it is, it is a wonderful event.
- 8:37I just want to get that out there.
- 8:39His marquee event is coming up November 14th, 15th, 16 And I
- 8:44love that event. Jerry, it was breaking news in
- 8:50the garage area about a year ago.
- 8:52A big company came to you because your racetrack property
- 8:57is right off Interstate Fourty 4.
- 9:00You know, I mean, we're talking Bass Pro Shops territory, we're
- 9:04talking Premier Land, OK. And this company came to you and
- 9:09they said we're going to give you big money.
- 9:13We want to buy your racetrack land facility.
- 9:17And you became very popular for saying you said no because what
- 9:22would I do? What would I do Then?
- 9:24Tell me about this time in your life when you were offered, you
- 9:27know, $1,000,000 or right at it enough to retire on.
- 9:32It was more than that. It was more than a million, I'll
- 9:35tell you that much right now. Millions.
- 9:37Millions. Yeah, it was like a digit.
- 9:40Yeah, it was a lot. And I looked, get this media
- 9:43e-mail from this guy, you know, I get a lot of fake emails and
- 9:45crap and I just delete, delete, delete.
- 9:48Kept getting this same the same guy.
- 9:50And finally I open it up because I was always told don't open it
- 9:53because you get a virus and your computer locks up.
- 9:55And so, and if you look at them one back then porn sites, you
- 9:59know, you don't open porn site, then you're a porn guy, then
- 10:02you're a porn guy, you know, so I open up.
- 10:05You didn't get it one time 1. Time when I was drunk and I
- 10:08don't even drink and now I'm labeled the porn guy.
- 10:10Yeah, right. I get it.
- 10:11So you don't, you don't want to open the e-mail and you finally
- 10:15do. We did.
- 10:16And it's a so boys, that I'm gonna contact you several times.
- 10:18Here's my here's my about the time.
- 10:20And this is no lie. Don't think Google don't watch
- 10:24you, Elon Musk or whatever the heck he does, or not even
- 10:27Facebook. What's his name?
- 10:28Zuckerberg. They're watching it.
- 10:29It was like a matter of 30 minutes after I opened this
- 10:33e-mail, I get a damn text from the same guy and I never replied
- 10:38back. He got my phone number somehow
- 10:42and he's saying, I've emailed you several times and I'm with
- 10:44this company and I'd like to talk with you.
- 10:48I thought, what the hell just happened?
- 10:50I opened that e-mail, 30 minutes later this guy's texted me and I
- 10:53never replied back. Nothing.
- 10:55Yeah, they they can tell when you read it.
- 10:57Something weird, but that's all right.
- 10:59I'm not conspiracy theorist, but sometimes there's some
- 11:01conspiracies that you wonder why.
- 11:02So I called this so born. I just tried to ask him how in
- 11:04the hell did you get my phone number?
- 11:07But he told me he got it from somebody else or something like
- 11:08that. He got it and I said, well, I've
- 11:10seen your emails and he said is this real or what?
- 11:13He explained who he was and stuff like that.
- 11:15And he said I'd like to make an offer, but I want to put it
- 11:18formally. So he's in this contract and
- 11:20they made me an offer. OK, I thought, Nah.
- 11:22I said, Nah, that's all right, I don't want to sell.
- 11:25And he sent me another one back and it got a little more in
- 11:28detail. Well, I sent this one to my
- 11:30lawyer and he read that and I go see, that's for real.
- 11:33Well, he Google searched him and all that stuff and he said,
- 11:35yeah, they're for real. And he said, looks like you're
- 11:37making a pretty good offer. I told little boy.
- 11:39Now I don't myself. We come back with a third one
- 11:41and I tell you what, Kenny, I don't drink.
- 11:44Well, I do. I drink one time of year,
- 11:45usually at my banquet at the end of Go Sky Casino down in Seneca,
- 11:49MO for racetrack banquet because I drink.
- 11:51Buy everybody a drink there, have a good time.
- 11:53I don't smoke dope, never done dope in my life, never done
- 11:56cocaine, restrooms, acid on that stuff.
- 11:59You and I are just natural. And I don't do Ritalins either.
- 12:02You you. You said one time on your
- 12:03interview you did Ritalin or something but the couch dogs and
- 12:05your mom took you off of it. When I was a child, yes, I was
- 12:08on Rick on in fifth grade I think, and then my mom took me
- 12:13immediately off of. Them.
- 12:14Yeah, I studied you a little bit, researched before I let you
- 12:16do this interview with me. I like that.
- 12:18Thank you. You're a good old boy.
- 12:20You're a good old boy. You're different racist.
- 12:21OK, so I thought about it and then my lawyer said, man, that's
- 12:28a lot of money. And he said, man, you think
- 12:29about that, Jerry? I thought about it and it got me
- 12:31kind of goofy thinking. And I told my fiance about it.
- 12:34She said, oh, you're crazy, sell it, sell it.
- 12:36Said no, I don't think I want to.
- 12:38So then they come up with this real official contract.
- 12:40I mean, it's like down to where I can't tell nobody, I can't say
- 12:43the company that non disclosure deal or whatever it is.
- 12:47So then I talked to accountant, try to do it, what it would do
- 12:49to do a 1031 light kind exchange, talk to my lawyers.
- 12:52I don't want to pay a bunch of taxes if I sold and stuff like
- 12:54that. So I sit down Indian style over
- 12:57here to the north. It was late one night and the
- 12:59stars without planes to slam by drug free, no alcohols with my
- 13:03shorts on. And I have my Crocs on 2 wheel
- 13:05drive, just so you know. And I sit down in the grass and
- 13:07I thought, man, I'm getting ready to have this.
- 13:10But I told him if I would do it, it would have to be a year
- 13:12because I thought about it. I'd have to own the track for a
- 13:14year, but I'm going to get ready to have this Turkey Bowl and how
- 13:18much of it. I felt like a chicken shit to
- 13:21have this Turkey Bowl and know it's going to be the last Turkey
- 13:23Bowl at the track and almost sell it.
- 13:26Shut it down and something hit me next morning.
- 13:30I just called him. I said now I don't want to sell
- 13:33it, just decided not to. He said well, we'd like to leave
- 13:35our offer and if you ever do like to sell, get in contact
- 13:38with us. Well, since then, UPS has built
- 13:40a building across the road from me, like right across you turn
- 13:43in my driveway. UPS has built, it's not UPS, but
- 13:46they've built a building on the 40 acres across from me that's
- 13:49going to be a totally automized UPS facility.
- 13:52There's going to be robots loading and unloading trucks.
- 13:54So I can't wait to kind of see that.
- 13:55So I don't know if the race tracks going to mess the robots
- 13:57up or what. So who knows, UPS might want to
- 14:00buy and I put a deal out there this year because the words
- 14:02getting around again that I'm going to sell the track.
- 14:04I'm not going to sell the track. So Jerry, you know you're not
- 14:07going to sell the track, but the best thing psychologically is
- 14:11race car drivers are, they're very self-centered.
- 14:15It's all about them, but but if now listen, I'm having fun with
- 14:19you, you, you always dangle that carrot that I'm going to sell
- 14:23this damn racetrack and then they'll show up more and they'll
- 14:26respect you more because you know we have found that out When
- 14:30they think they can abuse you, you know they will so you.
- 14:34Don't know how you you don't how much you miss something till
- 14:36it's gone. Too.
- 14:37Yeah, right. That's that song.
- 14:39You know they paid Paradise put in a parking lot.
- 14:42So I put it, I put a deal out again just the other day.
- 14:45That's not like Tony Stewart, you know, I'm not Tony Stewart
- 14:47or the biggest he is, but L Dor was going to sell.
- 14:50He just smashed it with an interview.
- 14:52Well, I mashed mine with the press release from the SRN news
- 14:54page. SRN News.
- 14:56You see my news page, Springfield Raceway is now
- 14:58affiliate of SRN News. We're more than just a
- 15:00racetrack. We're fun, fun about the world.
- 15:03So back to that. OK.
- 15:05And I said it's not for sale, but I put the disclaimer in
- 15:08there. I watched Yellowstone.
- 15:11You ever watch Yellowstone? No, but I've I need to watch it.
- 15:14I'm afraid I'll get a Dick. Beth is Henry.
- 15:16She's a rare. She's kind of redheaded, she's
- 15:19feisty, she's kind of smoking hot.
- 15:22And her dad has a lot of money. Well, they're trying to buy this
- 15:24land beside him. No one sell it.
- 15:26No one sell it. Don't sell it.
- 15:26Don't sell it. And finally, old Beth, she's
- 15:28really direct. She said make me a number, give
- 15:30me a number. This old boy just spotted off
- 15:33like $900 million and she just said write him a check.
- 15:38It's not for sale. But and the disclaimer, if
- 15:42somebody wants it more than what I feel like I needed in that
- 15:45location, I will take $10 million.
- 15:47Yeah, and I will move it. I will not move it.
- 15:50I'll move it. I'll, I'll get a year deal when
- 15:52I get it for a year. And I'll move it to this north
- 15:54of Joplin, MO. I've already got some land there
- 15:56I've spotted was going to buy. I wasn't going to buy this land.
- 15:59What if I was going to sell the other one?
- 16:01But the land is still for sale there.
- 16:02It's in a good location and it's only probably 28 minutes from my
- 16:05house. I love it. 54, so I'm 51 years
- 16:09old. I put on there.
- 16:10I'm looking good feeling. I just don't want them stress
- 16:12tests where you got to run that incline deal and they'll tack
- 16:15you out about 10 minutes on that incline.
- 16:18I'm just as horny as ever, I mean.
- 16:20Your arteries. Your arteries are.
- 16:22Flowing good, got good blood flow.
- 16:24I'm artery as ever and I enjoy. It's a challenge.
- 16:27Any racetrack owner. It's a challenge to own and
- 16:31operate a racetrack because I'm just your average old boy.
- 16:34I am your average old boy. I don't come from oil well
- 16:36money, natural gas money or anything like that.
- 16:39And just because you have oil well money and extra gas made
- 16:42don't mean you don't work. They're hard workers too, but it
- 16:44helps you out a little bit. So I come from my own, start
- 16:47with nothing. When we got the racetrack, we
- 16:49didn't have a grader, Kitty 1 water truck.
- 16:51And there's one water truck. And I don't know how we done it
- 16:56with no grader and one water truck.
- 16:59You card when I come to your racetrack.
- 17:01It's a beautifully carved out racetrack.
- 17:04You can tell that you're just constantly manicuring it.
- 17:08I love your racetrack, Kenny Schrader.
- 17:10All the race car drivers love your surface.
- 17:13But what a great story. OK, now I want to move on.
- 17:18These are highlights. You know it would take us two
- 17:21hours, Jerry, to do. 3 or 4. To do a Kenny conversation with
- 17:25you, I'm touching on these highlights.
- 17:28So you are popular for incredible driver meetings.
- 17:34You as mean as racer racers are, and it's all about them.
- 17:38You do grab their heart and you talk loud so we can hear you.
- 17:44The worst thing about it, a racing drivers meeting is the
- 17:48promoter going. Everybody gather on in and
- 17:50you're like, what? What?
- 17:52So the great thing is we can hear you, but something that you
- 17:59did, it is is not real popular. A lot of people don't know about
- 18:03it, but I know about it and we talked about this.
- 18:06We know that local racing is all about fighting.
- 18:09People want to fight because all these race car drivers are
- 18:13gladiators. I'm the greatest, my car's the
- 18:16best. You're dumb.
- 18:18They screwed me. I've been screwed.
- 18:22So that driver walks down to the other driver and wants to fight
- 18:26him and show I'm a man, I'm going to beat you up.
- 18:29You watched one of your drivers go down to another driver's pit
- 18:35and and he came back with something he didn't expect it
- 18:40don't go down to another man's pit.
- 18:42Tell me your philosophy on fighting at the Springfield
- 18:47Raceway. There's a place for it.
- 18:48Go ahead. A place for it.
- 18:50I mean, we're not a boxing match.
- 18:51I mean we're not. And just you brought this up and
- 18:54it goes back to when I raced. I had a trouble with a guy and
- 18:57he's mouthed me, I mouthed him. He crashed me and I told him
- 19:00next time I'm going to turn his, turn him over and then I'm going
- 19:02to beat his ass after I turn him over.
- 19:04So they told me not to be like ashes.
- 19:06What I does, I took caution tape, that yellow crime scene
- 19:08tape and I put it around my pits so they knew where my territory
- 19:13was. And I told him if he comes in
- 19:15there, I'm going to whoop his ass.
- 19:16And I told the track if he that's just way it's going to
- 19:19be. So I always felt like don't go
- 19:22to nobody's pits. Life's going to come.
- 19:23Sun's going to come up tomorrow on that racetrack.
- 19:25It's competition. You're running hard, they're
- 19:27running hard. Some guys cars don't work as
- 19:30good as others and they're battling that damn car all the
- 19:32time anyway. They don't mean to hit somebody,
- 19:34but if you go to somebody's pits at my place and a fight breaks
- 19:37out, you're going to be the one throwed out.
- 19:39But one old boy went down there and he got his eyes dotted.
- 19:41I mean, that old boy, black goes in his eyes and you come
- 19:44bitching to me. I said, hey, you're the one that
- 19:46went down there. You should have never went down
- 19:48there. But you brought that up through
- 19:50a month ago. I had two or three little
- 19:52incidents where the guys over on the West side of town is what
- 19:55Springfield is known As for the racetrack is the West Siders.
- 19:58Well, I tell people my dirt track is located on the other
- 20:01side of I-44, not the West side, even though it is the West side.
- 20:04I call it the other side. Well, a couple guys, you know,
- 20:06they think they're badasses, They think they're part of some
- 20:08big gang or something. They want to protect their
- 20:11brothers. And then stuff happens.
- 20:13And I don't want to seem that like that because it's a family
- 20:15oriented place. We have a lot of kids there, mom
- 20:18and dad's there, grandma and grandpa's there.
- 20:20Let's have fun. So I told them.
- 20:22You can sign up to be the baddest badass at the racetrack.
- 20:25If you guys want to fight you just sign up right here at the
- 20:28drivers meeting. I'll give it the boxing
- 20:30Commission and we will do it legally.
- 20:32You can box this little boy and I would do it.
- 20:36Nobody signed up and everybody's kind of calmed down.
- 20:38Yeah, you're, you know, I want to say something to everybody
- 20:43that's watching this. He's not crazy.
- 20:46He's like me. He's he's a brilliant man.
- 20:48I'm smart and we we have this thing inside of us,
- 20:52hyperactivity and we go and people think we're crazy, but
- 20:57we're brilliant. I just wanted to make that
- 21:00disclaimer out there. The man you're looking at right
- 21:02now has one of the most successful dirt tracks in
- 21:05America. Everybody loves it.
- 21:08Kenny Schrader's, if he lived there, he he'd racer everyday.
- 21:13He loves your racetrack. Let's move on just a little bit.
- 21:16I told you this was going to be 20 minutes because it was.
- 21:19It's catching up with Jerry Hoffman.
- 21:22We're not doing a life story. We've already touched on the
- 21:25things I want to know. But I guess inquiring minds want
- 21:28to know is how are you dealing with this new dirt racing world
- 21:33where everybody's watching on flow, everybody's watching on
- 21:37dirt vision? Has it?
- 21:39Has it taken people out of your grandstands?
- 21:43What are you seeing in this new era of dirt racing where we
- 21:48don't need to go to the racetrack, we're just going to
- 21:50watch it? It's a double edged sword.
- 21:52No disrespect to Flow. I like Flow Rigsby and them
- 21:57guys. It rigs me that that's the Flow
- 21:58guy and it rigs me. Yeah, Michael Rigsby.
- 22:02Rigs. Michael Rigsby, I don't know
- 22:03him. I looked up to him.
- 22:04He's a good announcer and I'd like to have been announcer
- 22:06sometime. I really like to have been a
- 22:07gynecologist but on a dirt track instead.
- 22:10So you'd get. Tired of it they all you'd get
- 22:15tired. You'd bring your wife?
- 22:16If you knew I was a gynecologist, you'd for 100%
- 22:19bring your wife. OK, we better stop on that.
- 22:21But hold on. The stream.
- 22:23The streaming. Yeah, the stream, but but
- 22:25Michael Rigsby said I watched all these great.
- 22:28You know, we just, we had a conversation with Michael Rigsby
- 22:31and Flow and you know, you said I got tired of looking at all
- 22:34these great drivers and nobody knew about them, so I put them
- 22:38on TV. It's double edged sword.
- 22:40OK, go ahead. It's good for their business and
- 22:42it's good. It's good for the it's good for
- 22:44the national level. It's it's causing they can't pay
- 22:4775,050 thousand 100,000 without that national deal.
- 22:51Me sitting here in my underwear watching.
- 22:53Flow $150.00 a year. Yeah, 100.
- 22:56Dollars T that's 300. For dirt vision.
- 22:59Yeah, that's cheap and it's a good, good fair price.
- 23:02I don't say it's too cheap. I don't want to raise it, but it
- 23:05works nice. I like I watch it, but it's it's
- 23:07hurt the weekly race and here's why.
- 23:09Here's why. Before to find out what went on
- 23:12the racetrack, you had to go, you had to go to your weekly
- 23:15dirt track to find out to watch your heroes race.
- 23:18There's no heroes anymore like there used to be years ago when
- 23:21I used to go to the Vedas Speedway, there was Ron Bolin.
- 23:24Ron Bolin, I don't know if you remember him, short track racer,
- 23:27give me 3 steps right on the back of his race car.
- 23:29Wide open late model driver, backer in, start at the back of
- 23:32the field every night, Top point man started it back weekly
- 23:36racing. That's what needs to happen.
- 23:37Every dirt track on weekly racing needs to start cop man to
- 23:41the back, become a hero, become a star past people.
- 23:44We line all these guys up on the front on weekly racing and just
- 23:47sign them on and they win. It hurts weekly racing, it
- 23:51really does. I'm not talking about a
- 23:52participation trophy, but weekly racing is built off that.
- 23:56OK, now back to the Flow deal or not Flow the streaming app.
- 24:00Here's what's hurt weekly racing.
- 24:01You, you know what's going on by watching every Monday, Tuesday,
- 24:05when like this weekend there's all kinds of stuff going on.
- 24:07And then you can watch their YouTube channel.
- 24:11You know, Chase Holland Racing, he's got a great YouTube People
- 24:13hunt the front guys. They've made good business out
- 24:16of what they do. So you can keep up with that.
- 24:19Why go to your weekly dirt track?
- 24:21Those weekly fans are true hardcore weekly fans.
- 24:25They really do. Your birthday at my track, I I
- 24:28try to let all my weekly fans in for free.
- 24:29One night your birthday and you get in for free at Springfield
- 24:33recently. And if your birthday's in the
- 24:34offseason, I have a date for you to get in free because I feel
- 24:37like it's cool to do some for somebody's birthday because my
- 24:39mom and dad always make my special.
- 24:40When I was a kid growing up, boys got to play football, big
- 24:43party and stuff. So I share, share that on
- 24:46because used to on your birthday, you go eat for free.
- 24:48I think now you get a dessert. Yeah.
- 24:50You know what, Bynomics. Bynomics.
- 24:53Bye. Well, no disrespect to Joe, but
- 24:56yeah, Trump. Trump needs back in.
- 24:58Quick, quick. OK, I agree.
- 25:01So it's hurt the weekly racing and those fans that come, man,
- 25:05my hat's off to him. I thank you for spurting
- 25:07supporting my old dirt track. I really do.
- 25:10Because it takes your money, your time, and people are
- 25:12staying. We have Springfield raceway.tv,
- 25:15but my Springfield raceway.tv is good for me to.
- 25:18I watch film, Kenny, I watch, I watch my film after the races to
- 25:21see how the track was good here, the good here, what happened the
- 25:24year before, all my big events and the drivers can watch the
- 25:27replays. So I don't want to mouth and be
- 25:29part of it because I am part of it with Springfield raceway.tv.
- 25:32Well, you are. You do have to stay up with the
- 25:35times. You got to do what you can do to
- 25:37survive. I understand that.
- 25:39OK, let's, let's move. Let's move forward a little bit.
- 25:41You got any more to say about that?
- 25:44No, it's a double edged sword. You can't dog them.
- 25:46It's good and bad. I use it too, but I don't know
- 25:50what's going to happen with it. I really don't because there's a
- 25:53lot of tracks that's hurt, really they are.
- 25:55And you can't blame it all on that though.
- 25:57You can't blame it all on that. OK, so this one I'm going to
- 26:00catch you off guard with I, I race UMP United Midwest
- 26:07promotion and I live I live South of Saint Louis and I want
- 26:15to come race at your racetrack, but I can't because you have a
- 26:20different set of rules, which I totally understand.
- 26:23And you're right. So I, I have a UMP carcass.
- 26:26Every single racetrack around me is is called it UMP.
- 26:30My rules are my rules. Now your rules are your rules.
- 26:33And then you go a little north and they got USARAUSMTS and then
- 26:38IMCAA and UMP and all these cars look identical.
- 26:44So for the fan, I don't see any different.
- 26:47It's just it's a modified. Oh, you, you say, OK, come on in
- 26:50here. Let me let me show you the
- 26:51differences. So I can't run your racetrack,
- 26:56but you have the Turkey Bowl coming up and I want to come run
- 27:01your I want to come run that race.
- 27:03Now they're trying to test the waters.
- 27:06They just had a big $100,000 to win.
- 27:09Kate Dillard won it and they all race together, all of them, all
- 27:13the divisions. So I, I just want to let
- 27:18everybody know that I want to come to your racetrack.
- 27:22But you can't penalize me. You cannot favor IMCA, you can't
- 27:26favor your boys. You got to figure out how to get
- 27:30me to your racetrack to where I, I, I'm not cut off by the time I
- 27:37get there. So think about it.
- 27:38For 12 years we've been doing that, Kenny, the Turkey Bowl.
- 27:41For 12 years we combined all of our rules together.
- 27:44So before they'd done that race up there and paid all that
- 27:46money, we've been doing that at Springfield Raceway.
- 27:48You can do a lot with a spoiler, You can do a lot with a 60 tire
- 27:51on the right rear. You can do a lot with this.
- 27:53A little bit of lead on the nose.
- 27:55I have rule package at Springfield Raceway and UMP guys
- 27:58have came right, came right there and it's pretty equal.
- 28:00It really is. My locals are little bit maybe
- 28:03advantage because they race there.
- 28:05Race Springfield's a different animal.
- 28:07It's like a small Batesville and when you come to Springfield,
- 28:09you're not only racing your car, your other drivers and your luck
- 28:13of the draw and everything like that.
- 28:15You're racing Jerry Hoffman. Because I watched the track and
- 28:18if I see the top getting too fast and I know I'd be on the
- 28:21bottom, I'm going to meltwater the bottom.
- 28:23If I need some bike through the middle, I'm going to put back
- 28:26through the middle. And these younger kids have
- 28:27learned. The younger kids in my track
- 28:29have really learned because they their their dads tell me, they
- 28:32tell them to watch Jerry. And this one kid said, how can I
- 28:35watch Jerry? He don't hold still, he
- 28:38understands to watch me in the track because they got to be on
- 28:41their toes. Because you race Jerry Hoffman
- 28:43every week. I get the race every week in my
- 28:45own way on preparing my track to make it racy so you can bring
- 28:49your car. Kenny, like I told you, 60 on
- 28:51the right rear, no spoiler. What's your spoiler?
- 28:55You get a two or three now. 3 inch.
- 28:57You put a three, so this year the probably the only have you
- 28:59leave your spoiler on. I'm going to let the USRA cars
- 29:01keep their spoiler and then IMCA cars probably get a 7.
- 29:04And that's basically what USRA rules are, basically what they
- 29:08are. 7 inch spoiler for what division?
- 29:11Nix O4 crate motor. Yeah, but.
- 29:13Your USRA is. But your track is slippery, you
- 29:16don't need no see. UMP cars are at a disadvantage.
- 29:20UMP cars are at a disadvantage because we got too much motor so
- 29:24your tracks naturally slippery. So a six O 4 motor is like
- 29:28traction control. How much is a six O 4 motor?
- 29:30Like 7-8 grand. Oh no, they're about. 8 grand
- 29:35just for the motor, just for the long run.
- 29:37Let's say 8500 and what's your motor 25,030?
- 29:411000. OK, so I'm going to tell you
- 29:43right now, Kenny, you probably need to buy six O 4 almost have
- 29:47more money. And run up your.
- 29:48Car that has you need to put less motor in your car you need
- 29:51to hook. Your car with that.
- 29:52OK, we're having fun, everybody. We need a restrictor plate.
- 29:55I'll make it even. Kenny, you, you'll bring your
- 29:57UMP car, we'll make it even. You're a good driver and you'll
- 30:00be fine. We make UMP cars run there and
- 30:02they do pretty good. This was a little promo,
- 30:05everybody. Yeah, Turkey Bowl.
- 30:07Turkey Bowl. I'm coming to the Turkey Bowl
- 30:09this year. This will.
- 30:09Be a Turkey. Bowl I I I want to run in the
- 30:12top ten I. Want to make, don't you?
- 30:14I want to make the a main, you know?
- 30:15The Schrader said that one of the most prized trophies he has
- 30:18is that Turkey and he had I went to Schrader's shop over the that
- 30:22the last dirt gateway dirt Nationals and it comes in it's
- 30:25great hospitality, great shop. You're one of the kind.
- 30:28It's cool what you do for dirt racing.
- 30:29Not all racing, not just dirt racing, you know, for all
- 30:33reasons. Thank you too.
- 30:35And that Turkey? Schrader said.
- 30:37It's probably one of the greatest trouble he's ever want
- 30:39to hangs from his ceiling in his shop.
- 30:41Yeah. Let's end like this, everybody.
- 30:45I was born in the city of Saint Louis, and my mom and dad told
- 30:48me when I was three months old, we moved to Rolla, MO.
- 30:53I'm an Ozark boy at heart. I I love Rolla, MO, I love West
- 30:58Plains, I love Fort Leonard Wood, Springfield, the home of
- 31:01the great Larry Phillips, where Jerry's track is.
- 31:06Emotionally, those are my real stomping grounds that I grew up
- 31:09around. It does pain me that I can't I I
- 31:12need to build a car so I can come up there and race those
- 31:15boys and fight with them. Would you get 6th or 7th one
- 31:18year when you drove my? Car was it?
- 31:19Oh God, let me brag myself a little bit.
- 31:25So what was the what was that number 88's name?
- 31:28What was that guy's name? Jed.
- 31:29Wheeler's. It was my car, yes.
- 31:31Jed Wheeler took it to Vegas as an A mod and then ran IMCA with
- 31:35it. And then you didn't think it
- 31:36would compete? I said Kenya will compete.
- 31:39You started tell back the heat race.
- 31:40No yellows ran second or third. That puts you in the B because
- 31:42you have so many cars. You and Terry Beckham with an
- 31:45open USMTS car had a heck of a race.
- 31:47Hold on, hold on right there. I had AAB mod with a six or four
- 31:53crate. It was my B mod and.
- 31:57I outran a USMTS straight up 60-70 cars there and I run 6th
- 32:03in the A main. From the B car like 14 because
- 32:05you wanted to beat and you right around the bottom.
- 32:08I mean, it was good. Your car was good.
- 32:10That's a Hoffman car, by the way, with Kenny Wallace driving
- 32:12it. Yeah.
- 32:13OK, back to whatever. He used to it well that that is
- 32:16a perfect example of the six O 4 crate that what was it an IMCA
- 32:21car. IMCA, it was an amon.
- 32:23It was an IMC Amon. We went to the duel in the
- 32:25desert with. I ran it as a BYU
- 32:27internationals. I'm going to trust.
- 32:29Do you got a picture of that car?
- 32:31Not right now, but OK, Charlie Marlowe, we're going to drop a
- 32:35picture of that red number 88 right here, right now.
- 32:38And I want everybody to know that was an old crate car.
- 32:41No, I'll have to send it to you. Yeah, you're gonna hop back when
- 32:44you have your hand up like that. Yeah, you're going to send it to
- 32:46CC's, dropped it and you're everybody's looking at it and I
- 32:50outran that car was so fast. O6O4 crate motor, just a popping
- 32:54and a banging, hitting the red chip out running.
- 32:58No, no, that's not the end of the story.
- 32:59The story is I come from deep in the field.
- 33:02In the a May 18th, Yeah, you, yeah, you passed a lot of cars,
- 33:05but you, you had less motor than them, Kenny.
- 33:07Hint, hint. You don't need a lot of motor.
- 33:09To well, I know that. Detune, detune your car and you
- 33:13have a Hoffman car, right? It's the other Hoffman.
- 33:15We're not related. I do have a nephew.
- 33:17Hoffman So Nick's going to have to get you hooked up a little
- 33:20better, which I say he could, or we're going to detune your motor
- 33:22just a little bit. You run or shoot your plate from
- 33:24time to time. I can, yes, I can handle that.
- 33:26OK, everybody listen. We are in podcast form.
- 33:30We are on iTunes and Spotify. You can listen to this fun
- 33:34catching up with Jerry Hoffman. Can I say one thing for you?
- 33:37close. Yes, Sir.
- 33:38Go to YouTube and like and subscribe to my YouTube channel,
- 33:43Springfield Raceway. We're close to getting
- 33:44monetized. Our Facebook pages monetize.
- 33:47We got SRN news now, but we're just this close to getting
- 33:50monetized on our YouTube channel.
- 33:52Please subscribe to my YouTube channel, Springfield Raceway.
- 33:55Thank you. I love it.
- 33:56OK, we are in Spotify and iTunes.
- 33:58You can listen to Jerry on your way to work, listen to him all
- 34:01the way home. And we know that this could be a
- 34:04three hour conversation, but easily.
- 34:08All right, everybody, Jerry, I'll see you at the Turkey Bowl.
- 34:11We've announced it right here and I'm coming down here full of
- 34:15love. I'm I'm a Rolla MO boy, so
- 34:18everybody be nice to me. Dad raced at Springfield
- 34:21Fairgrounds, Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, West Plains, Fort
- 34:25Leonard Wood. So I don't want to hear hear
- 34:27about it. That's my territory.
- 34:29I was there before all of you. So therefore I win.
- 34:34Thank you, Kenny. See you later, everybody.
- 34:36See you later, buddy.
