Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Too early for National leader switcharoos
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our look on the issue of the pole. Everyone's been
- 0:02Speaker 1: texting about this one this morning. It's too early to
- 0:05Speaker 1: tell whether National should switch leaders. We've had one poll
- 0:10Speaker 1: last night with the Left Bloc winning.
- 0:12Speaker 2: The tables have turned on National's coalition government, putting even
- 0:16Speaker 2: more pressure on the prime minister. National crashing down four
- 0:19Speaker 2: points now on thirty percent, and another serious hit for
- 0:22Speaker 2: Christopher Luxen down four points to sixteen percent.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Now, if that case were to eventuate, it probably wouldn't
- 0:30Speaker 1: eventuate in the way that it's being reported right now.
- 0:33Speaker 1: New Zealand first, I think, would step in to rescue
- 0:35Speaker 1: Labor from departy Mardi and soften the power of the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Greens if there wasn't enough support on the right to
- 0:40Speaker 1: form a government. You can't tell me that Winston wouldn't
- 0:43Speaker 1: do a deal with his devil to keep the left honest.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But back to Luxen and the leadership for a second.
- 0:49Speaker 1: He's had a bad poll, no doubt about it, but
- 0:51Speaker 1: there have been plenty of late with the Right keeping
- 0:53Speaker 1: the treasury benches. That's why most of his cabinet keeps
- 0:56Speaker 1: his support. That and the fact that nobody else seems
- 0:59Speaker 1: confident in enough that actually do a better job and
- 1:01Speaker 1: improve those numbers. The next best preferred prime minister for
- 1:04Speaker 1: the NATS is Bishop on two percent. Until it's clear
- 1:09Speaker 1: in not just one poll, but a trend of polls,
- 1:12Speaker 1: that these guys wouldn't be part of a cabinet because
- 1:14Speaker 1: they wouldn't have the numbers to form one in the
- 1:16Speaker 1: first place, then the leadership won't change. There's still plenty
- 1:20Speaker 1: of time before election day. There's more than six months
- 1:23Speaker 1: to go, and a lot can change by then too.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Descenda didn't need long to turn and transform Little's vote
- 1:29Speaker 1: into enough support to seize powdered cheap. This idea that
- 1:33Speaker 1: all must be decided this Tuesday or next Tuesday, before
- 1:38Speaker 1: Luxon's trip to Singapore ahead of the budget that follows
- 1:40Speaker 1: it is a red hearing Caucus would be making a
- 1:43Speaker 1: decision without enough time to gather the facts and without
- 1:47Speaker 1: confidence in a decent replacement.
