Transcript
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Welcome into the replay room.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: I am Sean Boyle, and joining me today it is a first timer on this channel.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: You may be familiar with him if you're a fan of the Torture Fans department, but it is none other than my good friend, Mr.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Jeremy Good.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, how are you?
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Sean, is this Tortured Music?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: No, this is good music.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: But uh Yeah, listen, I'm excited.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: First time.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: First time on for the music stuff.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So uh this is great.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Great artist, of course.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Great album that we'll be talking about.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: You've covered a lot of good stuff already with other guests too.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I hope this is uh same thing.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jeremy, you said tortured music.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: This album might be able to fit under that category.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: We are, of course, talking about Noah Khan's stick season.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: It's a perfect album for fall, Jeremy.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: That's why I wanted to have my resident Noah expert on to discuss it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm excited.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We're getting it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It is stick season, literally northeastern too, uh, this part of uh the woods.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Uh it's exciting.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Great timing, of course.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It's always relevant, but the timing, you're right.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's awesome right now.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think we're maybe a couple weeks away in Pennsylvania from stick season, but I know in the northeast where Noah's from, this has to, there already has to be some stick season going on.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So it's a good time to talk about it.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Of course, the agenda will stay the same.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: We'll give a little bit of background on the artist and album.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: We will do our track-by-track breakdown, then we will tier the songs.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Tiers, of course, will not change.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Four tiers.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: The first tier is great, best of the best elite type song.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Second tier is really good, teetering on great.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Third tier is a solid, fine song that we would keep around.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And the fourth tier is unfortunately a cut tier.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we'll have any in that tier today.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to find out.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: But we'll do that and then we will give our final thoughts on the album and then a score for the archive.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, you ready to dive in?
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: All right, a bit about Noah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Let's start with obviously he's a Vermont boy.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: He talks about it often in his music.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: He's from the Northeast.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: That is not a secret.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Jar, would you consider yourself a big Noah Khan fan?
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: And how did you get into his music?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Very big fan, Sean.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I got into it because of you, of course.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: That's sort of how I get into a lot of music.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, you send stuff my way, I listen, and it sounds good.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the case a lot.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: But uh I I heard him a little bit before uh you really told me about him when we were actually uh driving back home from a bachelor party for from a Michael Collins when we really got into some Noah Khan stuff.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Heard him before, of course, was good, but then that session we had uh in the car really, really started getting into it afterwards.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: It's all it's all been history since.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: We've been to a concert together in Philadelphia on uh his last album, of course, The Great Divide.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, continue to build on that uh that history.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're more than qualified to talk about him, Jared.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I do remember that car ride back from Collins' Bachelor Party.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I almost missed my flight.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: We hit such bad traffic because I believe of thunderstorms, and it was just a noa-con jam session the whole way.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad I'm glad that you have become such a big fan of his.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I got into him, I would say I heard a song or two in passing off of his first record, Busyhead.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: I think it was Mess, was the song that first caught my attention.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: I was a fan of it, and then I enjoyed a couple others on that album, but I wouldn't call myself a real fan at that point, just kind of like, oh, I like what I've heard so far.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Then the Cape Elizabeth EP, the song Main, came out, and that really caught my ear.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, I'm in on whatever he's cooking.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Then we got, of course, to Stick Season, where my fandom was taken to a new level, and of course, a lot of other people's fandom was taken to a new level.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So let's dive into Stick Season.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: It was released in 2022, and it is Noah's third studio album, and it was coming off the back of a 2021 record called I Was Slash I Am, which did not really experience anywhere near the level of success that Stick Season did.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: This was very much his coming out party.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's funny you say that, Sean, because I was I am, I think after Stick Season gets a lot more play, and of course that makes sense, but I feel like that's more everything beforehand then becomes listened to at such a high level after stick season.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So uh Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was rose-colored glasses.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: When it first came out, it was not really taken well, not really well received.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Then Stick Season comes out, and everybody's like, oh, this guy's amazing.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, look at how good this album is, too.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Very much revisionist history, I would say, on that front.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: That album is, I would not say, one that we'll be talking about here.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's up to the the level, I would say, but this one certainly is.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: It was recorded in two studios, primarily in Guilford Sound in Vermont, and then the study in Nashville.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Noah wrote most of the songs himself, which we of course love to see.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: He's a very, very good songwriter.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: There are a couple of writing credits that went to Gabe Simon, who is also the main producer of this album.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And then he also gives a writing credit out on Still to Ian Archer, and then on The View Between Villages to Todd Clark.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: But other than that, it is a Noah Con masterpiece from a writing perspective.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: The two producers on the album are Gabe Simon and Noah Khan.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Noah seems to work with Gabe Simon any chance he could get.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: He worked with him on previous records, he worked with him on this most recent record, The Great Divide.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: So it's a familiar, comfortable pairing for Noah there.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Certainly worked too.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: The last few albums, Great Divide, of course, with Sticks Season 2.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: If it feels like a little bit of bread and butter uh with those guys, shout out to Shane.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: But uh, that's uh yeah, it's cool to see.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I don't know like Gabe Simon too well, but the fact that they keep on working together and the music that they're putting out, good, good, good with me.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, for sure.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Gabe Simon's most known for his work with Noah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: So I don't think I don't think it's off base for you not to know him from anywhere else.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: That's really where he is known for doing most of his best work.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: The album commercially was, needless to say, a massive, massive success.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: It completely transformed Noah's career, in fact.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: I think his career trajectory shifted a great deal because of the success of Stick Season, in particular the song Stick Season.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: That song was able to reach number one in a lot of charts.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: It led this album to carry a lot of positive momentum.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: And in fact, into 2024, this album was the fourth best-selling album in that year.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: So two years after its original release, it becomes one of the best-selling albums in the world, which is pretty impressive.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: It speaks to the staying power, but also the breakout that Noah experienced here.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: The numbers speak for themselves, like you just said, Sean.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Um and I don't want to jump on some of my notes, but this, yeah, this is the album that really that started the popularity, the run that he's been on the last few years, and the break in between with when he wasn't writing.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: But this is he's in this place because of six season, the album, the song itself, like you mentioned.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So I completely agree with that.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good point you made too about the 14 original songs and then the various different versions of this album that he put out after while he was kind of searching for new material and that new next chapter.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: We're going to primarily talk about the 14 originals here, Jair, and then we'll give a section of what we like from the additionals.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: But what we're breaking down today is going to be just the original stick season release, him with the dogs, and the barn in the background, that iconic fall record.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Let's jump into the tracks, Jair.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: The first one it is called Northern Attitude.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Jair, I'll give a couple of quick thoughts before I throw it to you.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: I always say that the first song it needs to set the table.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: It needs to lay the groundwork for what we're about to hear.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I want it to fit the vibe, give us a good indication of what's coming.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: This song does a fantastic job of that, and I think a large part of it is because of that opening guitar.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: It really just gets you in the mood.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: It gets you in the mood.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: The intro's interesting, and then 30 seconds in or 40 seconds in, whatever it is, you just get this big pow.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And the word that I always describe, northern attitude, is loud in a good way.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It just hits you, it hits you hard, it smacks you with attitude.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Northern attitude, you might say.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It's a great song.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: It probably is my one-one, maybe when it all comes down to it.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It's just a great, it's it's so catchy.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, the music's great, the lyrics are awesome.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It it just it flows really well start to finish.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on in a good way.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's a great song.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: I I feel like I'm gonna say that with a lot of these songs, but like that's fine.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Northern attitude.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's unreal.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: No, that's fine.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: You if you like it, don't be afraid to shout it from the rooftops, Jar.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: I agree it is a great song.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: I love the build-up, especially in the back half of the song.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Is here's a question though.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: The whole northern attitude thing, the the phrase northern attitude and how he uses it, not only in this song but throughout the album, is being from the north, specifically the northeast, the New England area, an excuse to be a dick.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Because that's kind of what this song sounds like at certain points.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of just like saying, Yeah, if you get too close, just remember I'm from near Boston and I might be an asshole.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It it's it might be the most accurate line I've ever heard.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, I'm not trying to start anything with people up north in that city of uh in Massachusetts, but uh it is very fitting.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Is it a good excuse?
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: No, I mean listen, it's not, but like in terms of accuracy and whatnot, completely fitting, and you've you do you do the rest, but like, yeah, I mean it it it works for sure.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if it's if it's good if it speaks on who you are, but in terms of accuracy, spot on.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: For sure, spot on.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I I don't think it excuses the behavior, but it does tell an accurate depiction of the behavior.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So it's a great opener.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: It really does do a good job of getting you excited to listen to more, which is all you could ask for in the opening track of an album.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And then what he decides to do, Jair, is he puts Stick Season second.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: And as we mentioned, this song in particular was the one that really propelled him to a new, a new level, a new height, so to speak.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: This song is an anthem at this point.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: It's become iconic.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Jair, what are your thoughts on Stick Season?
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't have to say my thoughts because you stole them, Sean.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: The first thing I said for Stick Season is it's the anthem.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Anytime you go to a Noah Con concert, if you want to say a national anthem, you put on Stick Season.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Very good song, of course.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: It's become so cult-like in a good way that it always has a place for me, but it's just so overplayed.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Not in an awful way, but just because like everybody knows Stick Season.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: That's the first thing they go to.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: And when something gets so big like that, usually it's just a little too much for me.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: But it's still listen, when we do the tears, people know where I'm gonna put it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: It's still up there, it's still great.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: It's just a shame that everyone's gone into this cult-like mentality with it, but I understand it too.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So it nothing you can do about that.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a victim of its own success for sure.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Because it's it's such a good song that it it took off and it propelled them, like we said, but then it became so, so, so overplayed that I personally wouldn't be putting it on a ton.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: But when we're talking about this album, a few years after its release, just trying to put some historical context around it, you kind of need to remove those feelings and give what your feelings are in the actual song itself.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Pretend it was the first time you heard it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: And when you do that, it's just special, special stuff.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: The lyrics dream each night of some version of you that I might not have that I did not lose.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: That's I mean, that's so good.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Jair, the other line that really gets me is no, I'm no longer funny because I miss the way you laugh, as if he only told jokes to make one specific person laugh.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Golly, does he do a good job of just putting that knife inside you and twisting it a little bit?
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: The whole concept also of stick season is great, and I don't think it was a very popular term nationally to describe that those wintry months until this album came out.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of become commonplace in our lexicon, but I don't know that it was beforehand.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you're right on that, Sean.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: The lyrics are great, like you alluded to.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: He really, I mean, poetry very much could be in his future.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: I guess he's gonna apply it all to songwriting, which is fine and makes sense too.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: But yeah, those are good, those are two great lines that you mentioned, and uh, and it's it's a great song.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: The third track is All My Love.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: I'll let you lead things off with All My Love, Jar.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: All My Love is a very good song, of course.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: It's a great jam song, I think.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Sean is what I want to describe it as, where it starts off fine, and then we saw this in concert, and as soon as it gets to the chorus, people just start jamming out and like bobbing their heads, and it's like it's a fun time, it's a fun song, it flows well, it it's just it's probably not my favorite favorite, but again, tier-wise, it's still gonna be high.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: You can't go wrong with it, and it's it's nice that he mixes in a little something where you can like really vibe to and jam to with some of his other stuff that's a little more sad and whatnot.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: It was cool to see this live, and especially everybody get really into it and switch from like, you know, swaying to like really, really getting into it with jamming out to it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think this song and the fourth track do a good job of capturing some different elements of Noah because a lot of the album is kind of redundant in that singer-songwriter-y, folky, indie, just kind of guitar stripped back versions where the poetry really shines and the songwriting really shines.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: This song, and then she calls me back, which we'll get into in a second, do a good job of adding some different elements.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: And I think the energy is needed, you know what I mean, or else the album would feel flat at a certain point.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: But he does a good job.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: It's like a pitcher, Chair.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: You can't throw fastball every pitch, you can't throw your if you're a if you're a slurve pitcher, you can't throw a slurve every pitch.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: You need to mix it up, keep guys guessing.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I think All My Love does a decent job of that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I love the retrograde.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: We'd shake the frame of your car.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I love how he sings that.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: That's a great lyric.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: It's a nice one, I agree.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: It's not near the top of my list in terms of favorites, but it's a good song.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: His voice range is pretty terrific, especially in the chorus.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: He really gets up there.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: You hear a little bit of different tones throughout.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Probably one of his more poppy songs on the album, which is fine.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Everyone can have a little poppiness to them.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Pop always hits.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Everyone loves that kind of stuff, that genre or two of music.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And like you said, it was good that he mixed it up uh that way.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, you need something like that because you can't just cry for an hour and ten minutes straight listening to each track in the car by tune.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, that was that's a good alternative.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which leads us into She Calls Me Back, which I think She Calls Me Back is one of the few songs that doesn't really fit into the fall vibe and narrative that this album has.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: This song, the messaging, of course, is consistent with what he talks about, and it it's very much that same theme, but it's more of a summary jam type of song, isn't it?
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: It's more it gets you out of your seat, it makes you want to tap your toes, it's got a nice guitar that's different from the rest of the album.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So I think this one stands out in a pretty good way, and it's another change of pace.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I also thought I had jammed down as just like all my love.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I think this is a jam song, too.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: It's kind of cool.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's because, you know, the words she calls me back.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: It feels like Sean, a little bit of a call and response in the beginning, and then when you get to the chorus and start jamming out.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Uh, so I thought that was cool.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Fun song.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Can't go wrong with this.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: It's up there for sure.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Is it my favorite?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Favorite?
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: No, but it's just underneath that.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I really enjoy the song.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: The sound's great, different, different to the other, I guess, 13.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And it's just really fun vibes.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Two two back-to-back, fun vibes songs to mix it up a little bit.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: So that's yeah, that's great.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Fun, good vibes on She Calls Me Back.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: It's definitely got a different energy than the others, which is needed to keep things fresh.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I also I don't mind that he actually does a little bit of doxing with the I still dial whatever it is, 822913167, whatever it is.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: I don't hate that he throws out some actual digits.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Listen, I it it it it's it's different for sure.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And uh it gets you a little, it feels it feels like you're a little closer to the story, to some of the personal stuff of his, maybe.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And it's real.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that it literally is real.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: So that's cool.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Uh that's an authentic look uh and sound to it.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: So I agree.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, he's not afraid to do it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: He does it on the Great Divide, too, with a license plate.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: So he's really he's really just outing outing some close folks to him.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Let's move on to the fifth track, Jar, which is a complete change of direction.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: It is come over.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: This song is delicate and beautiful and one of my favorites, Jair.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on Come Over?
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, first line, Sean.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Of course, I'm in the business of losing your interest.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And I told us off at each time that you leave.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, is it great?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: That'll get you to that'll that that's that'll get you to think that's again the lyrics with this is great.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Different song, again, with this, the range is fantastic.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: He really gets up on some of the high notes slower for sure, which for me isn't as much my favorite unless it's like really, really emotional in lyrics, like call your mom, for instance.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: But even that picks up too.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: But again, it's a safe song.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Even even if you want something a little more up pace, it's a safe song, and it's very beautiful, like you mentioned, and it fits the album well too.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: It's a good balance, a little bit of everything with this, too.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: So it's not my favorite song, but you really can't go wrong with it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And I might not search to play it myself, but when it comes on randomly, you listen to it through.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: For me, yeah, that's totally fair.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: I'm a little higher on it than you, but I think what you said was very accurate about the song.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: It's got this, I mean, the analogy that he does throughout the song of referring to business and her love it as as one and how the day the stock market crashed was as a bad day in the relationship, and it's just beautiful vocally that come over that he hits the first time.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: It it's like haunting.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: It's raw.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: He talks about his house that isn't anything special special, and he's almost ashamed of it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: And then he hits you with the line, I know that it ain't much, I know that it ain't cool.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: You don't have to tell the other kids at school.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, good lord.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: That's so freaking that's so emotional, it's so raw.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: And then the line that is just absolute killer is someday I'm gonna be somebody people want.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh my god, how's got tissues?
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Bring out the Kleenex.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'd also like to tell the listeners too, in terms of music, I'm not the most sophisticated overall.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: So there might be stuff that like I don't get that 99% of the people get.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: So listen, we're not, we're not, we're not in the we're we're in the business of just giving some vibes, okay?
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: We're in the vibes business.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, I mean the lyrics are oh my goodness.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, how ringing are is that last one you mentioned too, and how true that came.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: So age is well, of course, and also fun to think about, you know.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: You just think about the journey too with stuff like that from night 2019-ish to this point on with him.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about the sixth track, New Perspective.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Another great one.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: It's got a nice little groove to it, it's a toe tapper, it's it's got a good message.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: What do you think about New Perspective, Cher?
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: It's a great song, Sean.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: It's one of my favorites.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: The lyric, Oh, the town, Oh the Town's for the record.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: The intersection got a target, and they're calling it downtown.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: I want to sing it, so I'm not really doing it justice with how he keeps it going.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: But I mean, those are I mean, those are such casual lyrics, but like you really feel it with the storytelling and how you know where he's from and how much of a big deal it is to actually get a target in this town, and how they name certain streets, and how streets get new names, or even get their own names, or and stuff like that.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: It's great.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It's a really fun song, really, really catchy.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Like I think you were alluding to.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: It really flirts, it's one of the best ones for me.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: It's it moves like crazy, it's sped up at the right times, great vibes, great music, great lyrics.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It's just it's it's a it's a classic Noah Khan song.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's another one that does a good job from a songwriting perspective of kind of equating an example of something into a deeper message.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: And this is kind of how you talked about the town getting a target and how that's news.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: But it's also he he uses it in a sense to kind of want to pull people that want to grow out of the town that think they're maybe better or too big for the town.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's it's almost like he wants to pull them back in and keep them at that place that he's at.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: So you don't want the people to outgrow the town, but the town is starting to grow itself.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: It's a weird and fun analogy.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It it feels like just like quote unquote common folk ideas and just sung and performed beautifully.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: He alludes to it in his uh documentary that he put out a few months ago, and you sort of get interviews from people in that town and talking about like how it's cool that they just got a Wendy's or something like that.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: It really hits home with that stuff.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: You can really connect to it, yeah, and it's great.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: The seventh track Jair is everywhere, everything.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: This is not the best version of this song, that of course is the one with Crazy Abrams, which he releases at a later date.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: But it's got one of my favorite lyrics in the album on this one, with all of our books' pages dog-eared.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: I just love that little touch of class from Noah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: He does such a good job.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: It's Taylor Swift-esque, how he's able to really hone in on a detail that you might think might alienate some people or make some people not be able to relate to what he's describing.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: But because he paints such a brilliant picture and so descriptive, everybody can picture it and then therefore everybody can kind of associate to it in some way.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: I think also a theme that's starting to pick up at the seventh track here is that his songs sort of have this crescendo that works.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: It's like a build-up to a point that works to the chorus, and then it really results in a loud few guitar strums and some killer vocals.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: And a lot of those songs fit that mold and it works for me.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you something, guys.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: The Gracie version of this song is the best song on this album for me.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: When you saw you saw The Odyssey a few times, Sean, like me, when Odysseus and his men are going past the sirens.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Sirens.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Song.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: The sirens were singing Gracie Abrams verse.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: It just has to be.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: This song is fantastic, even just Noah's version.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: The music is just unbelievable.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I think it's probably the best musical aspect of it.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: The lyrics are great too.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Like you said, a crescendo's in for the chorus, really hard.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: It hits hard.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: It's a special song.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: It I musically, music to the ears.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: It's probably my favorite.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: It's quite good.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: I I like the I like the name of it too.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Everywhere everything.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I wanna I wanna love you.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: To or food for the worms to eat.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just it's just good stuff.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: It's just really good stuff.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, listen, we know, we know, you know, with the great divide in the bugs, we know how how much Noah is with nature, and then when he implements it into his lyrics, the music, it's fitting and it's cool and it works well.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, appreciate what you just said.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: That's that's awesome.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: The eighth track moving right along is godger.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: This could be my favorite, to be quite honest.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Orange juice.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: This is a songwriting masterclass.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Honey, come over.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Listen, it it gets it gets it's taken down here, Jair.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: To talk about talk about tissue, Sean.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: My goodness.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: It's this is a cool song because very emotional, of course, but also the second half a little up pace, a little more I don't know what, I don't know the word, more fun, more more chill, I guess.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: But the lyrics of this song, the backstory to this song, Sean, really emotional, really cool.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: This is what you get your tissues for.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: This is, you know, it's it's for the tears.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: A simple idea of orange juice at the breakfast table turns into a bigger meaning just with the song itself, with the title and uh the storytelling throughout this song.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Uh the music's great, of course.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: The lyrics are unreal.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: It it's a great song.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: I know that you love it, it's great.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Um, it's up there for me too.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the equating the orange juice to just that safety of you don't have to feel the pressure of the there's no temptation of alcohol or anything, and it's about the recovery and the aftermath of that accident that was caused by drunk driving.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's beautiful, it's raw, it's super raw, like to the point where it's almost hard to revisit sometimes.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: I couldn't imagine having been affected by something like this in my life.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I don't know how often I would go back to this song, but it really is.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: It checks the notes of a ballad, but then it also gets to a point in the back half of the song that it has a different energy about it, and it's just really good.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: It's it's a theatrical experience.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: So I love orange juice.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And we're staying on the fruit theme as we move to the ninth track, Jared.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: We go right into strawberry wine.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: And this one was one where when it first came out, I was kind of indifferent to it.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I didn't really, it didn't stand out to me in either way, good or bad.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I'll say this this is a stock riser over the last couple of years.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is uh it's very sweet.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: It's it's definitely slower.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: It kind of lingers at the end, but for good reason.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: There's not, it's not, you know, it's the last minute, it's just like letting the music talk do the narration, which is which is great to have a little bit of that in the album.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: It is really sweet.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: It's just the lyrics, it doesn't as it doesn't move as much, but again, there's a place for that in this album where there's a lot going on in general, and then when it's time to, you know, sit down and serenate, serenate whoever it is, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, you throw on some strawberry wine.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the darling speak to me, but don't you say a word.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: I'm in love with every single song you've ever heard.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Light a cigarette, I'll watch it as it burns.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: It there's so many good lines in this one.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: And I think you made a good point there, how it lets it breathe in the back half.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: It gives the space that is talked about in the song.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: And I think he's almost able to convey the emotion he's feeling with that space and just that gentle, gentle music and instrumentation in the background.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: It's less crowded than a lot of these other songs, where he's packing in a lot of words and a lot of buildup and some loudness and some anthemic songs that are easy to sing along to.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: This is not that, but I think that's what makes it stand out for me now.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And when you put it on as a record, it's a song that is very good in the context of the album.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: That is one that maybe you don't rush to all the time on Spotify when you're just looking for an individual track.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: I really like what you said about lets it lets everything breathe.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And uh I think that I think that it ages well because of that.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: You know the vibes, you know what you're getting into with strawberry wine.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: You have a lot of heavy hitters in front of it, some behind it too, and it's good to mix it up and go to go to that place too a little bit.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and speaking of heavy hitters, the 10th track, Growing Sideways, Jared.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: For me, this one is my favorite melody on the whole album.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: It beats stick season for me.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: I love the melody from this.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: From the moment he opens his mouth to start to sing, he hooks me with that melody.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: The melody's great, the lyrics are very, very strong.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Sweet message too.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: This is one when it came out, I liked, but there were a little there are a few ahead.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: This one's aged, I I always thought it would age well.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: It's aged even more well than I thought it would.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the melody, I agree with you on that.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: The melody, especially from the beginning on, sets you in the mood, sets the scene for the entire song.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And what one of the things when I first listened to it, I thought, this is safe, there's no issue with it.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And then as time went on, I realized this is a lot better than safe.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: This is just a really good song.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's honestly, I know he references therapy in the song itself, but this is musical therapy.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: And it it really does do a good job of, and this whole record does, to be honest, and we'll talk more about that in our closing thoughts.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: But it does such a good job of bringing people together to get them to sing out their emotions.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And by the end of a sad song, you almost feel happy because you had that shared experience of singing it with others, and you see that live in his concerts, but you also just when you're listening to this with people, it it's a very sad song in terms of what he's talking about and some of the depressing things, and he gets stuff from his parents' parents and what their parents did to them, and that sort of thing.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: But when you it's cathartic in how it's it's portrayed in this album.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So I love growing sideways.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: I think the writing is great, like you mentioned, and I think the melody is the best on the album for me.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: The title, too, makes you think a little bit.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: And I sort of like those kind of like the idea of growing sideways, and then you listen to the song, and then you try to connect the dots with the lyrics a little bit.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: The music helps you too.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's cool.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: The 11th track, Jeremy.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: We're nearing the home stretch here.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: We're back into the last four songs.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Halloween, which I guess I'll go first on this one.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: This is the first one where it's just kind of fine for me.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: It's good in terms of the writing, but the instrumentation never really gets out of one similar sound.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: And it kind of creates this lack of a climax, I guess.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Like you're kind of just constantly waiting for it to get somewhere, and it doesn't really go anywhere for me musically.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: This is a it's a steady line for me, Sean.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: That's I you're completely right.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: It like there's no movement, it's fine.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you might like it a little more than me.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: It's not bad.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: When I first heard it, I was just surprised like it didn't evolve.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: It I'm just surprised, like, every other song on the album, I think you could talk about in an interesting way.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Halloween just doesn't do anything for me, but I want to love it, especially you know, this time of the year.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: It just yeah, there's not much there for me.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: I but I could be missing something too.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's just me.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: It it really doesn't go anywhere different and it leaves you wanting more, which is not the best thing to do as you're already 11 songs into an album.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: You you kind of want to end on a strong note, and I think we bounce back in a big way with the 12th track, Homesick, because he almost lulls you to sleep with Halloween.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: So you think you're thinking to yourself, okay, we have three more songs.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: What are these gonna be?
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Are these gonna be another snooze fest?
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Here he comes back with homesick and he says, Nope, we're back to jamming.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: And this one has similar vibes to She Calls Me Back, with it, it's got a ton of energy, it's a different energy, and it's more of a rock song.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: That's what I had.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: You're you're stealing all my lines, Sean.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: This is this is the equivalent to his uh his Beatles stuff, his rock and roll, not rock and roll necessarily, but rock, like I said.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Great song to rock out to.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: So, so fun too.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: The chorus is great, the music is great, the lyrics are uh very good too.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Nice little New England reference in the chorus that is fun to rock out to.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I think what I'd want to note is like if you're having a bad time, if you know some miserable people, have them listen to this song.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: It's just it's just a bop.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: And like this, I don't know how many like quote unquote bops Noah Khan has.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: This would be a bop, like in like in a bopy way.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: This is a bopy song, and it and it's good, it's a nice alternative, especially coming after Halloween, like you said.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: This this is just a song, like where like I don't know how you don't have a smile on it.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: It's a great sing-along song, too, especially live in person.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Um, one of probably his easier sing-along songs, too.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Even though he has quite a few, homesick might be the easiest, just everybody can get involved with, especially if you don't know it beforehand after listening to the chorus and whatnot.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: So it's great, terrific song.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is uh a shot of espresso in the afternoon for a long day.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: You needed something to get through the rest of the album, and this is it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And again, too, Sean, with the like the name of the song, like you wouldn't think so going like homesick, you would think, knowing Noah Khan, Kleenex, come over here.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: It's not, it's different, so that's kind of cool a little bit.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, also it is once again him using, I'm clocking it, once again him using New England as an excuse to be a dick.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: So we don't love that.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: We don't love that.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: It's it might be a bit misrepresentative of our friends in the Northeast, but it is a great song nonetheless.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: The 13th track is still, and we're back on that slower, more beautiful pace, but I think this song is so delicate and it's good, but I just don't know that it fits in how this album was coming to a close.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know necessarily that we needed this in Halloween, which I guess we'll get to, but there are two songs here on the back half that if they weren't around, I think maybe the album is more palatable.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: But I do think a little fatigue is also clouding my judgment with this because as you listen to the album straight through from the beginning, Jar, you get to this point where your Noah's voice is unique, but it can wear on you a bit if you are listening in succession to these songs.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: And I think when I get to still, I get to a point where I don't know that I need to hear this one, and I kind of just want to get to the last one.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: We're on the same page, Sean.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: It's better than Halloween, which counts for a lot in my book.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: It's very heartfelt.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: The voice control control in the beginning, very impressive.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I just don't really like appreciate the song that much.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: It's just it there's not much to it.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Again, I don't mind slow songs.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: I'd like a little more buildup.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: This just isn't my favorite.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: But again, on a scale that compared to Halloween, it's a lot better than Halloween in my opinion, but overall, it's towards the bottom of my list.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Even the name, like the name, real like again with the name like still, like sort of it feels still for most of it.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: The vocals, again, very impressive, but besides that, it just doesn't like it doesn't really resonate with me as much.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it I do think it gets a bad draw in terms of its place on the album.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I feel like if this was a second or third song, it would be viewed differently, but we we have that fatigue that is set in.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: By the time we get to it, then I'm like, okay, I don't need it for sure.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: So we're on the same page, but still.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: The last track, Jeremy, the album closer, it is the view between villages.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Woo wee, I'll let you go first.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Trademark that quote.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Did you give me that quote you just said?
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Great storytelling, build-up is awesome, sound is just gorgeous.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Well, another one of those two partners where it starts off slow and sweet in a good way, but a little more up, you know, a little quicker than just like very slow, and then builds up to the pace that it does, the quick pace, the imagery of his dead dog.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: It's awesome.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: It's a great song, great title, too.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: The music is great, a lot of passion, a lot of emotion and in sort of anger, sadness.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Last song, too, on the album.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: It moves a lot.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you heard it from me before, Sean.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Another great song on the album.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it certainly is a great one.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: It's one of my favorites, Jeremy.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: I think it's cinematic.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: It has the ability, I think, to be almost the score of a movie in how depictive it is with its storytelling.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: I I really, really like The View Between Villages, and I I love that he tied a bow on the album perfectly because it's a strong starter that gets you in the mood, and then a really strong finisher that wraps things up nicely.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Though that's it for the 14 songs on the original Stick Season, Jeremy.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Now, we have to talk about there's been a lot of other good songs released that fall under the Stick Season umbrella since then.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: What are your favorites of that bunch?
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: So Dial Drunk is awesome.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: It's again another song that's sort of became become very, very culty in a good way.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Not like bad culty, but it's just picked up so much, it's just picked up so much that uh, you know, it's sort of at that territory where like it's a cult-like vibe.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: But the end of Dial Drunk when he sort of goes a cappella, and then that like it's it's just such a great sound.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I love that song.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: Dial Drunk is awesome.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Paul Revere.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Another very good tune, Sean.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, do you want to start us off with this one?
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: No, Paul Revere is special.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I would say of the new songs, it's between that and forever are that are my two favorites.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: I love both of those.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: I think both of those should have been on the original album.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: They're so good.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: They would have been two of my favorites if we were including them in this mix in the tier listing.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: They would have been right up there for me, Jar.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Paul Revere is great.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: I I agree.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're gonna go far another very good fun song that uh that's nice that you know is happy to message-wise, music-wise.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Some of these songs, I I I don't know the the the complete difference between the extra release and the original.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: A lot of these songs it feels like could be original just because of how good they are.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: You're gonna go far, of course, Call Your Mom.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Very little emotional, toe.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know how you go listening to that song without crying.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and that was a song.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: I know for a fact that was a song on our jam sesh on the on the ride home that uh that summer afternoon.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Holy smokes, that song is emotional.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: My goodness.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe his most emotional song, in my opinion.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: But everything, the lyrics are great.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: He sings so beautifully.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Um what else?
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was gonna say that he also did this thing, which it was frustrating at the time because we weren't getting new music per se from Noah, and you were kind of waiting for what was next.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: We were getting those few songs that we got, and then what he did was he re-recorded new versions of some of those existing songs at that point.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: But what he chose to do, and it won me right over, Jared, is he chose to just work with all of my favorite artists.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: He works with Sam Fender, he works with Gracie Abrams, he works with Gregory Alan Isaacov, he works with Josier, he works with what's our girl?
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just yeah, you're gonna win me over if you just lump in some of my favorite artists and get them to sing because hey, it worked.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially we didn't mention it yet, everywhere, everything with Gracie Abrams.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Obviously, this was an extra.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: I think this is the best song that he's done through stick season of any capacity.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: They work so well together.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: The balance is amazing.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Again with the sirens, like I mentioned.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Just close your light your eyes and listen to that verse.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: And they it works well together, but the contrast to like how it's different.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: So it of the sound is different, the f the female voice with that, but it meshes well overall, reflecting on the bigger picture of the song with those two.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: So that's that's yeah, it's great.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it certainly enhances uh an already good song and takes it to a new level.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: So I'm with you there.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Jared, let's stick to the 14 that were on the original release and let's tier these bad boys.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: We'll start with the fourth tier, and then you can work your way up.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Just slowly read what you have in each tier, just the song title and where you have it.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: So that so so fourth tier, like cut.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: What would you cut first?
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: If if any.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Halloween.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: You're gonna get cut.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: It's really weird how like this, like I said before, it just doesn't do anything for me.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: It just doesn't like move whatsoever.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: I'm with you.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: I'm with you on that, but I won't spoil mine.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: What do you have in the third tier, which is just a fine song?
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: It fits, you wouldn't get rid of it, or is there another one you'd cut?
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: I think I'd cut still.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, so two cuts.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Now, what about that third tier?
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Third tier.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: You might hate me.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go come over.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Hey, listen, we these are our own lists.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: There's no shame.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: There's no judgment whatsoever.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: What else?
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Strawberry wine.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that's it.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Tier three?
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: And then your second tier, which is the really good teetering on great songs.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Growing sideways.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: She calls me back, all my love.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: That's it for that one?
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: And then what's in your top tier, the most amazing songs on the album?
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: Not in order, of course.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: I'll just mention them down.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Northern Attitude, Stick Season, New Perspective, Everywhere, Everything, Orange Juice.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: And the view between villages, too.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're not too far off.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: I think we we went slightly different in tiers two and three, but tier one, there was a lot of overlap.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: So my cuts, my only cut would be Halloween.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: My third tier would just be still.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: So not too far off.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: You had still as a cut.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: I haven't.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: That could go.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: I very much see that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: I could have gone that way too.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: I've no issue, yeah, with that.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's no right or wrong.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, I go back and forth on these depending on the day.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: So it's all kind of subjective.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: The second tier for me, the really good songs.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: I love Northern Attitude, All My Love, She Calls Me Back, New Perspective, Strawberry Wine, and Homesick.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So I've lumped all of those into tier two.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: And then my top tier, the best of the bunch on this album, Stick Season, of course.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: I think it just has to be there for what it did.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Come over for me, Jar.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: I I Wow, okay.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Everywhere, everything, of course.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Orange juice growing sideways, and then the view between villages.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: So some some definite overlap, some songs that we agree on, some songs that were a little different on, but it would be boring for the listener if we just said the same thing about each song.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: So we need some variety.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, listen, we need a little debate.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: I think for me, I have tier one a little more heavy just because I think that the tier ones are that good, and it doesn't, I don't want to cap it off at like uh you can only have three or whatnot.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: And like I feel like there's a lot of tier ones in this, and definitely a lot of tier ones and twos on this album more than other albums, I think.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: For sure, which is which is a good sign of the album's strength and how well liked it is by us.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: So that's why we're here talking about it.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna sit here and bring up a four-year-old album that stinks, you know.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: We're gonna bring it up from the best of the best.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Let's transition to the final part of the episode, Jar.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: We give our overall thoughts on the album and then we score it zero to a hundred.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: I will kick it to you to kick things off.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Just give me your overall thoughts on the album.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: It's a great album, it ages well.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: The music is great, the lyrics are emotional, and they also tell a great story.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: The storytelling is awesome.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of different kinds of vibes.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: You get a lot of jams or a few jam sessions, a lot of happy songs, some more emotional songs, a lot of movement with throughout a lot, a lot of the songs, too.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Where I think it shines too.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: If we're talking about the extras, there's just so much variation you can do with that.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: You can add different vocal artists, like we've seen, and those songs might even be better than the originals.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: And it's not because the originals are bad, but just because it's such a versatile album, in my opinion, Sean.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: You can implement a lot of different sounds and voices and tones, which is great.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: I think speaks to the strength of the album.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: This I like like we just went over, just so many tier one and two songs.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: I think because of that, it has room to have the Halloween's and the still, in my opinion.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: Although still, God, still could be a three for me, but I won't, I won't change my score.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: You can have a few duds like those, in my opinion, and be so top heavy like it is, that there's no issue there.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: If I'd give a score, I would go I'd go uh I'd go a 92 out of 100, Sean.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Wow, that that's a I like that score, Jarr.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: And I don't think it's far off from what I'm about to do.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: So I agree with a lot of what you said.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it's very heavy with tracks that fall in those top two tiers.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: I think just my overall takeaways from the album, it's hard to sum up how impactful and therapeutic this was for a lot of people, and myself included at some points.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: There's certain times where you put this on and it's just a comfortable thing to listen to to get you through something.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: And that's a credit to his songwriting, it's a credit to how he is able to connect with the audience with his voice and just the emotion that you pick up on and how raw it feels when he's singing it.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: It gets you to relate to it and connect with it, and it it serves as therapy in some ways.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: So I like the cathartic nature of it.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: I'd lump myself into the camp that thinks maybe some of the songs have become overplayed, but that's not a fault of Noah's, it's just a fault of how good they are.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: So I don't think we can use that as a bat to beat him with.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: I am gonna say the the few knits I would have to pick would be while the album does a good job of subtly changing speeds and gears and mixing in some of those more jammy songs with some of those more stripped back and slow songs, I think overall his voice is so unique that a lot of them do blend together.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: And there's a limit or a fatigue that comes with that sometimes, which is why this album isn't perfect for me.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: And musically, in terms of instruments, there's not a ton of groundbreaking stuff here.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of stuff that we've heard similar things to before, but what separates him is that ability to write and almost be a poet, as you alluded to, and it makes him unique and different and special.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: So it's a great album.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: It's certainly one of the best for this time of year.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: I have gone for a 90 out of 100.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: So it gets into that A minus range for me.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: I think we're very similar in how we viewed this album and scored it.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: I think so too.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for uh And I I completely agree with the, you know, some of the songs just being so overplayed.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: It's not a bad thing, it's just a product of, you know, how how how people have connected with it and how how popular it is.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: So yeah, like I said, I think the tier ones and twos carry so much weight where it just it's a 90 score and up.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, that concludes your debut appearance here on the replay room.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: Any any final thoughts?
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I very much enjoyed this, Sean.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: This was fun.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: I love talking music too now, especially music you connect to, you vibe to, you enjoy.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Um, and such a good album to get.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you included this album.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: This was a great one, of course, because of how good it is, because of how iconic it has been for Noah Khan doing the groundwork for his very popular career afterwards, definitely before, but also this was like the groundbreaker, I think.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: So this is important historically for the podcast for music and yeah, so many good tunes.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: It was fun uh doing a re-listen too.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Not that I don't do it besides prepping for this podcast, but it was like another good excuse to put on stick season.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I like the exercise of having to go back for the purpose of recording a podcast because it requires you to be an active listener.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: You can't just passively listen to it and sing the songs.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: You have to make a mental note or take a physical note of some of the things you're hearing and enjoying.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: So I completely agree, Jared.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: This was a pleasure.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: You'll be back on soon for many of these, I'm sure.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: I have vetoed one of your favorite artists, but there I know you're a Billy Joel guy, and your back goes in several different directions.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: So we'll have you back on for anybody not named Morgan.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Well, so we might try to fight you on that, but like the stranger Billy Joel, uh, that would be fun.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: That would be fun.
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, a lot of good stuff, hopefully, to come.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: Well, Jeremy, thank you as always, listeners.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: Thank you for tuning in.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: It does mean a lot.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: Please, on your way out, hit us with a rating, a review, maybe a comment.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: God forbid, you leave a nice positive comment.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: A lot of negative comments on some of the stuff we've been doing recently, and I do have to laugh.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: I feel like I'm pretty good about brushing them off.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: I just toss them a like and move on.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: But oh boy, there are some there's some hateful stuff out there.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Thankfully, I I seem to be a good sport.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: There will be a day where one of them ruffles my feathers and I fight back, but for now, I'm doing a good job of just keeping it moving.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Jeremy, thank you.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: Listeners, thank you, and until next time, take care.
