- 2:45Johnny Doller, George Adkins and Northwest Indemnity. Oh Hia, Georgie, how'd
- 2:49you like to go to New York Johnny and get into the game man one
- 2:52of the theater. Thanks a lot, Georgie, but no thanks, not
- 2:54the grease paint type. I know. But Amy Bradja is Amy. Yeah.
- 3:00We wrote a policy on her a couple of years ago. Look,
- 3:02if it's a autograph you want, why send me. It's not that simple
- 3:07anyhow. She's got all the fends she wants. I know I'm one of
- 3:09them. I think she's great. Johnny, looks like somebody's trying to kill
- 3:14her. Georgie. I'll be right over tonight and every weekday night, Bob
- 3:25Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's
- 3:30Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators Truly Johnny Dollar Expense accounts submitted by special Investigator Johnny Doller
- 3:46to the Northwestern Indendity Alliance, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
- 3:51of expenditures during my investigation of the Amy Bradshaw matters. Expense account Item one
- 3:58sixteen dollars and fifty cents transportation and incidentals to New York City. I checked
- 4:02in at the hotel and then went over to the Criterion Theater on West forty
- 4:05fourth or Amy was starring in a play called The Unguarded Hour. David Coleman,
- 4:12the director, was standing in the wings watching the third act on stage.
- 4:16David Coleman, Yes, I'm Johnny Doller. Insurance investigators sent over by
- 4:20Northwestern Indemnity. Oh yes, mister Duller, I call them. Let's go
- 4:24over here where we can talk all Jane, how's the play going? Twenty
- 4:30two weeks now? I've been going along just fine until this business came up?
- 4:34How did it start? Last evening, just before curtain time, I
- 4:39dropped by Amy's dressing room. She looked well strange, how so pel trembling.
- 4:46She's staring at a note in her hand. Sounded like some sort of
- 4:49crank No, Juno, you are an evil woman. You will be punished
- 4:54by sudden death. Have you reported this to the police? Oh no,
- 4:59that was a that if I did, it might get into the papers,
- 5:00and we don't want that kind of publicity. I see. How about if
- 5:04I talked to Amy after the show? I told her you'd be down and
- 5:08she'll talk to you all good. Well, mister Dollar, the strain of
- 5:14lists whole things begin to show up in her performance. She's making mistakes and
- 5:18it rattles the cast, especially the you non genal Sheila Mitchell. Well,
- 5:24I'll see what I can do. There's always the possibility that it is just
- 5:27a crank note, and that Amy, I'll never hear any more of it.
- 5:30That's what I'm hoping. But we might as well face another possibility that
- 5:32somebody close to Amy is using the crank note as a cover. Has that
- 5:36thought ever occurred to you? Why? No, no, it hasn't,
- 5:42mister Daler. We will continue with the Bradshaw matter in a moment. I
- 5:56waited for Amy Bradshaw in a dressing room at the theater. Fifteen minutes later,
- 6:00after the final curtain, she swept in there. I've never seen her
- 6:03from closer than the fifteenth row before I was pressed, but I didn't have
- 6:09a chance to say so. I think the second act. Oh well,
- 6:13that's the way it goes. If you'll just give me a minute to get
- 6:15some of this makeup off now now, Hi, Hi, I know it
- 6:20was only a question of time until you ran down. I'm sorry, I
- 6:24guess I get a little overcharged out on the stage. Listen. It's nice
- 6:28meeting you, mister Dollar, and I know how you've come down here,
- 6:30but I think you're wasting your time. Oh soo, things really pretty silly,
- 6:34you know, I hope so, Miss Bredshaw? You mean Amy?
- 6:38Okay, Amy, say look, how about having a drink with me?
- 6:41Somewhere we can talk about it. I'd love to, but I'm afraid I
- 6:44have a date tonight. Could we make it tomorrow? Maybe? Sure?
- 6:46Okay, any time? Excuse me, come in. Oh Mike, I'm
- 6:54sorry. I know you had company. That's all right. This is Johnny
- 6:57Doller, Johnny Mike Comroy. My agent was right. How are you?
- 7:00What do you think of it tonight? Mike? Well? I seemed like
- 7:03okay, Oh, uh, tell you what. I'll see you tomorrow.
- 7:09Tomorrow, Mike, I've got a few things I got to take care of
- 7:14tonight, Contracts to go over, you know, things like that. Oh,
- 7:17of course, we're kind to meet your dollar. Hi, Amy,
- 7:26is that offer of a drink still good? Journey? Well? Sure,
- 7:29but I thought you said you have. Oh oh sure, let's go.
- 7:33Thanks for understanding anywhere I'm particulating. There's a little place right down the street,
- 7:39small and quiet. Oh would you mind if we crossed the stage and
- 7:45without the other door? No? Why? I think someone's waiting for me
- 7:48outside this exit, sort of a friend of mine, Portercine. But he
- 7:54can be a little wearing and I'm rather tired. Sure i'd see him through
- 8:00the open door. A thin faced Ruther, elegant looking man in a black
- 8:03Homburg. We went out the other side and down the street to a bar
- 8:07a few doors away. It am too on expensive count four dollars drinks.
- 8:11After the first one, Amy relaxed a little. I wanted to get her
- 8:15talking about herself, and it wasn't too tough to do. There's not really
- 8:18much to tell about me. I've been acting a long time. Sometimes it
- 8:24seems too long. I've come a long way. Some people would say,
- 8:28up, I hope it is. He make it sound pretty simple. I
- 8:31mean, I guess we do what we have to, all of us.
- 8:33I had to act so so just like that, huh, just like that.
- 8:39You've always gotten everything you wanted, haven't you. I think so.
- 8:46Hasn't anyone ever gotten in your way? No, Johnny, that's never happened.
- 8:52If it did, it looks to me like somebody's standing in your way
- 8:54right now. What do you mean that threatening letter you got the other day?
- 8:58I told you the whole thing's still there's nothing to it. That's what
- 9:01you told me. But I don't think you believe it. Okay, So
- 9:07maybe I have worried a little about it. I wouldn't have if it hadn't
- 9:11infant, that was probably only my imagination. What was Amy? Well,
- 9:16last night after the show, I felt like walking a little. I went
- 9:20west on forty fourth Street Times Squared as usual, it was crowded. I
- 9:24stood on the curb waiting for the light to change, and suddenly I got
- 9:28shoved out into the street, right out into the traffic. I jumped back
- 9:31just in time. You see who did it? How can you tell in
- 9:35a crowd like that. I know it's probably only coincidence that had happened right
- 9:39after I got that note. But oh, Johnny, I still just can't
- 9:43believe anybody is really trying to do me harm. But I guess what's been
- 9:50making me nervous during the performances, staring out at that blackness past the footlights,
- 9:56wondering if there's somebody out there who hates me. Uh huh. I
- 10:01guess I can't stand being hated, Johnny. I've got to be loved.
- 10:07Look, Amy, did it ever occur to you this might not be a
- 10:11crank out on the audience, that it might be someone closer to you?
- 10:13What, Johnny, That's impossible, isn't I don't have many friends. They've
- 10:20mostly to do with the play, but those I have a good one.
- 10:22Who else besides your agent Pomroy? How about the director David Coleman. He's
- 10:26a very old friend and one of the best. How about the producer Emily
- 10:31is the last person in the world it wished me harm On a dollars and
- 10:33sense basis, if nothing else. He and Dora bo Dora his wife.
- 10:37I like her very much. Does she like you? Why shouldn't she?
- 10:41What about this man you wanted to duck tonight, the one who was waiting
- 10:43outside the theater Quartercaine? Oh, it's a sort of a fan, I
- 10:48guess, a little eccentric maybe, but he's been very good to me.
- 10:52Johnny. Really, it couldn't be any of them. Maybe maybe not.
- 10:58Look, Amy, I was sent down here is Northwestern Indemnity holds a policy
- 11:01on you know? Now? Who's the beneficiary? William Yorke? Who's he?
- 11:05My husband? Oh? I didn't know you were married and we separated
- 11:09six months ago. But I wanted he didn't, but he wanted I didn't.
- 11:13It's as simple as that. Where is he now Here in New York
- 11:16somewhere? I guess I don't know. He's a rider sort of Johnny,
- 11:22I'm tired. Oh you're sure, you must be. I'm sorry I kept
- 11:26you so long. No, I didn't mean that. It's been nice,
- 11:30very nice. It's funny. I seemed to relax a little when I'm with
- 11:35you. We left that one lay and one outside. I had them three
- 11:41on expense account, two dollars taxied Towamy's apartment. There was a car parked
- 11:46two doors down, while a man just sitting in it. I saw Amy
- 11:50give it a quick look. Then, as she said good night to me
- 11:52at the door, I noticed that she slipped the catch on it. I
- 11:54saw it across the street and stepped into the shadows. A moment later,
- 11:58the door of the park car opened and her agent, Mike Pomeroy, got
- 12:01out and went into the apartment house. Then I realized I wasn't the only
- 12:05one watching this. Half a block down the street, I could see a
- 12:07figure in a shadowy doorway. I ran toward him, but he took off
- 12:11around the corner. When I reached the corner, he was nowhere in sight.
- 12:16Amy might have been taking this thing only half seriously, but I was
- 12:18real serious about it. Now. She said she had some very nice friends,
- 12:24but I had a strong hunch that one of these very nice friends was
- 12:28out to kill her. Johnny Diller will be back in a moment to tell
- 12:46you about tomorrow's episode. Johnny Doller Elson tell down a precinct headquarters. Johnny,
- 12:52Oh, hi, yel, sorry, I missed your call a few
- 12:54minutes ago. What's on your mind? An actress named Amy Bradshaw. Amy
- 12:58one of my favorite me too, But right now I seem to be looking
- 13:01for a guy who doesn't feel that way about her. Al it looks like
- 13:05somebody's trying to kill Amy Bradshaw. Better coin down here and tell me all
- 13:09about it. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, New
- 13:20York City to the Northwestern Indemnity Alliance, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 13:24an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Amy Bradshaw matter, the threat
- 13:30of an attempt on her well insured life expense account Item five A dollar seventy
- 13:35five cab from my hotel the precinct headquarters to talk to Detective Lieutenant Allison Teller.
- 13:39All looked about the same as the last time I'd seen him. Rugged,
- 13:43competent, maybe a few pounds have a here sit down, Johnny,
- 13:45sit down. Thanks. Something about Amy Bradshaw, you said, Yeah,
- 13:50I didn't know you were a friend of hers. Northwestern Indemnity holds a twenty
- 13:54five thousand dollars life insurance policy on her. Yeah, take a look at
- 13:58this note, Amy gout, it's several days ago. You are evil.
- 14:01You will be punished by sudden death. All. Come on now. A
- 14:05couple of nights ago, after the show, somebody shoved Amy off the curb
- 14:09and out into the traffic over in Time Square. Well, the same thing
- 14:11happens to me almost every time I'm around Times Square. You know what I
- 14:15smell in all this? Oh? Sure, you probably smell a publicity.
- 14:16I sure. Do you think I'd fall for a thing like that? You
- 14:20known Amy bread Shaw very long? No, I've seen her in a few
- 14:24shows, but last night was the first time I've ever met her in person.
- 14:26I didn't know you pretty well. I'd say you might be getting a
- 14:28little stage druck gun her. Uh huh. What about the man who trailed
- 14:33Amy to her apartment? Last night? Oh? Oh, I don't know.
- 14:37I chased him, but he had too much of a lead on me.
- 14:39I still wouldn't go jumping to any conclusions who you got to work on
- 14:43for instance, Well, for one, David Coleman, her director. Then
- 14:46there's the producer Emory Taylor and his wife Dora. From what Amy said,
- 14:50I gathered Dora doesn't like her very well anybody else. And there's a ragent
- 14:52Mike Pomeroy. She seems to be pretty wrapped up in him old stable fooling
- 14:56it looks like it. Also a fellow named Porter Kane who's usually hanging around
- 15:01the theater waiting for Amy. And finally the man I really came to talk
- 15:03to you about. Who's that name? Is Bill York her husband, but
- 15:07they're separated. Oh, she doesn't know where he is. You figure he
- 15:09might tie in somehow. He is the beneficiary of Amy's insurance policy. Well,
- 15:16I'll see if I can turn up an address on him for you.
- 15:18Okay, thanks all. In the meantime, I think I'll pay a call
- 15:20on this Port Decane see if I can find out just how good a fan
- 15:24he is. We will continue with the Bradshaw matter in a moment. Expense
- 15:39account ada of six to twenty five cab to the apartment of Port Decane.
- 15:43In these seventies, it was an expensive looking place. I got there about
- 15:46noon, but Port Decane was just finishing breakfast accompanied by chopin. May I
- 15:52offer you a cup of coffee? Mister Dollar, Oh thanks a blank please?
- 15:56Yes? No. If you came to see me about any Bradshaw,
- 16:00I believe that's right, mister Kane. I represent Northwestern Indemnity Alliance. They
- 16:06hold a policy on miss Bradshaw. You perhaps want some sort of character reference
- 16:10on her. You might put it that way. In that case, you
- 16:12couldn't have come to one better qualified than I. You see, Amy is
- 16:17my career at present. Afraid I don't understand, mister Kane. For some
- 16:21years ago I was relieved with the sordid but customarily necessary task of working for
- 16:25my bread and butter. The result is that I've been able to devote myself
- 16:30to a fascinating hobby. What kind of a hobby? I collect things.
- 16:34All the objects of my interests vary, but they all have one thing in
- 16:38common. Ah. This signat ring I'm wearing, for instance, Yes,
- 16:42I noticed it. Very unusual. The crest is that of the Medici family
- 16:47Renaissance Italy, the only ring of its kind in the world so far as
- 16:49any. The authorities on that period. Are aware that vas on the table,
- 16:55the painting on the wall, that sculpture one of a kind precisely,
- 17:00which brings us quite logically to Amy, who is clearly one of a kind
- 17:06soul. So I plan to add Amy to my collection just like that.
- 17:11Huh. I'm certain Amy will see it my way in time, and I
- 17:15have time now. If you'll excuse me, I must dress for the matinee.
- 17:21Will I see you again, mister Dollar, Yes, you probably will,
- 17:26mister Kane. I was glad to get out of the hot house atmosphere
- 17:34of Kane's apartment. Real weird this character, and I had a hunch i'd
- 17:38better keep an eye on him. I'd am seven a dollar sixty five camp
- 17:42fare that evening that the Criterion Theater. I arrived half an hour before curtain
- 17:47time and headed for Amy's dressing room. Then, as I approached her door,
- 17:51you're listening, real careful, I'll give it to you once again.
- 17:52You've been tossing wrong cues to Sheila for three nights now. You've been doing
- 17:56everything you can to upstage or make her look bad. It's just that I've
- 18:00been nervous lately. Maybe I have made a few mistakes of my name.
- 18:06You know, I've got plans for Sheila, and I don't want her looking
- 18:08bad in this play. We've got plans for Sheila. What about her?
- 18:14Amy? We can talk about that some other time, but for now,
- 18:18I just want you to understand you're to lay on Sheila. I mean,
- 18:22is that a threat? Mike? Take it anywhere you like. It sounded
- 18:29like Pomroy was coming outside, so I ducked around behind a piece of scenery
- 18:32and waited a moment. Then I went back to Amy's story. Oh,
- 18:37Johnny, Hello, Amy, you look tired. I am. I just
- 18:41had a little go around with Mike. I've been fluffing some of my lines
- 18:45lately. He seems to think I've been doing it deliberately to make Sheila Mitchell
- 18:49look bad, But he's wrong. Have you found out anything yet, Johnny,
- 18:55No, not much. I still can't believe there's anything too it.
- 18:57It's so silly to let it upset me, silly even to give it a
- 19:00thought. Well, try not to, Amy, Let me worry about it,
- 19:04all right? Did I ever tell you it's nice having you around?
- 19:10Johnny? I left a dressing room and started for the alley door. But
- 19:15somebody stepped out in front of me. It was Mike Pomeroy. Hello Dollar,
- 19:22Oh, hi Pomeray. I was just talking to Dave Coleman the directory.
- 19:25He told me he was the one who sent for you. He told
- 19:29me why you didn't know about the threatening letter Amy got. No, No,
- 19:33I didn't look a dollar. Every actress I've ever known has gotten at
- 19:37least one note like that during her career. You don't think they should be
- 19:40taken too seriously, then, no, a. Amy's pretty nervous these days,
- 19:44and as long as you're around stirring things up, she'd be worried about
- 19:47it. If there's anything to be done about it, I can handle it.
- 19:51In other words, you want me to mind my own business at it.
- 19:53You said that dollar I didn't might not be a bad IDEA funny thing.
- 20:03When somebody tells me to lay off a case, my interest in it
- 20:07always doubles. After the final curtain, I went backstage to wait for Amy.
- 20:11The stage door was open and I could see Porter Kane waiting in the
- 20:14alley outside, so I went over to him. Well, mister Dollar,
- 20:18good evening, Hello Kane on duty again tonight. Perhaps that's one way of
- 20:22putting it. I thought I might have a little chat with Amy after she's
- 20:26chained. I'm afraid she has a date. Do you happen to know with
- 20:30whom? Yeah me, mister Dollar. Are you suggesting that I'm to regard
- 20:36you with some sort of rival? Not at all, Kane, I'm just
- 20:40suggesting that I'm a friend of Amy's. I see, good night, mister
- 20:48Doller. After Kane left, I stood beside the stage door and tried to
- 20:56figure out some of the angles on this case. There were too many of
- 20:59them. By the time I went in. The theater was dark except for
- 21:03a dim light bulb over the stage, and everyone had gone. Everybody,
- 21:06that is except Amy. I ran into the dark and theater. She was
- 21:11standing horrified next to the stairway by the dressing rooms, her eyes fixed on
- 21:14something that lay on the floor. Johnny, I was on my way up
- 21:18to meet you. I here to swish through the ear this heavy sandbag.
- 21:21It barely missed me out. Stay back against the wall, Amy, you'll
- 21:23be okay there. I climbed the long ladder up to the catwalk above the
- 21:29stage, where they sometimes used the sandbags to balance hunks of scenery. It
- 21:32was dark up there. I started edging along the catwalk. Suddenly my foot
- 21:37hit a loose board. I almost lost my balance, a loose board that
- 21:40could have been left for me. And it was a long, long drop
- 21:42down to the stage. Whoever it'd been up there, I knew the theater
- 21:45pretty well. Finally I went back down to Amy. She was trempling.
- 21:51Johnny. It's okay, It's okay, Johnny. Maybe I didn't take it
- 21:56seriously before, but I do know somebody dropped that sandbag from up there deliberately.
- 22:00Somebody is trying to kill me, and I'm scared, Johnny. I'm
- 22:04scared. Johnny Dollar will be back in a moment to tell you about tomorrow's

- 25:55one is the Amy Bradshaw matter. And know these have not been programs that
- 26:03have had sponsors, They've been sustained. Well, now we get actual sponsors,
- 26:10and so we will have commercials, which I know is a highlight for
- 26:14many fans, but I'm not certain it'll be on this program. Anyway.
- 26:18Let's take a listen to any branchhaw manor welcome back. Well, these have
- 26:27to be some of my least favorite commercials. I did put in a note
- 26:33to Andrew to have it because so that we only get a grand total of
- 26:38two commercials in these half hour blocks. So when I heard the first time
- 26:47that you may never hear this offer again, I was like, I wish
- 26:52that were true, But I think we'll have this just for a couple of
- 26:56weeks, so it's definitely part of a radio your history. All right,
- 27:00Well, on the listener comments, some feedback those of your voice will Adam.
- 27:08This is Lisa the prot I just finished listening to today's download and the
- 27:15pronunciation of an of the composer is the l Tree Shaft to covid safta Covid.
- 27:22Also, I have a quest. I wonder if you would consider changing
- 27:27the order of the Friday podcast so that Johnny Dollar is first. You made
- 27:33the comment today that we had some control over how what order we listen to
- 27:38things in, and so I do that, But every single week, would
- 27:41I do if I fast forward to the middle of the podcast, listen to
- 27:47the Johnny Dollar and your comments, and then I have to rewind to the
- 27:51beginning and listen to whatever the other thing is. I'm sure I'm not the
- 27:53only one who can't wait to hear the Johnny Dollar. Sometimes I don't listen
- 27:57to whatever the first thing was that you play, although I liked the most
- 28:03recent one, whatever it was, I'm about a reporter, but I don't
- 28:06even remember it because I'm just so desperate to get to the end of Johnny
- 28:08Dollar, because God, Cliffhanger has really got me a painting. I'm sure
- 28:12I'm not the only one in there, but I cannot listen to whatever the
- 28:15first thing as you're playing on Friday because I just want to hear what's happening
- 28:19to Johnny. Okay, thanks, so much. I really love your show.
