Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We did learn on Friday about a family who had
- 0:03Speaker 1: their car stolen which contained a number of items, as
- 0:06Speaker 1: I understand it for their son who does have special needs.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now I understand that they have since been recovered or
- 0:13Speaker 1: the vehicle has since been recovered, but it has indeed
- 0:18Speaker 1: been damaged. Now joining me on the line right now
- 0:22Speaker 1: is is Luke.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Luke.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Hell okay, Loke.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I understand that it was your vehicle that was stolen.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Can you tell us what happened?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it was stolin. So we had the intruder coming
- 0:38Speaker 3: to our home and steal the keys and take the
- 0:41Speaker 3: car from our house in Jingerly, and they cut all
- 0:47Speaker 3: of the sort of straps on my son's special needs
- 0:52Speaker 3: seat and dumped those on the side of the road
- 0:56Speaker 3: and then took the car. And it was like hated.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Thanks to some some sort of tip off to the
- 1:04Speaker 3: police from some members of Palmistan after hearing I guess
- 1:09Speaker 3: your message on Friday and also some Facebook messages, so
- 1:14Speaker 3: the community that helped the police retrieve the car. Yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 3: the equipment inside it was sort of damaged, and also
- 1:24Speaker 3: the car itself had all of the seat belts cart oh,
- 1:29Speaker 3: so unusable at the moment, we're just it's yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Oh mate, I'm so sorry to hear that, because some
- 1:38Speaker 1: one of our cour one of our listeners had called
- 1:40Speaker 1: through to let us know what had happened, and immediately,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you know, we read that message out and I just thought, I,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know, I was really hoped that you'd be able
- 1:49Speaker 1: to get your vehicle back, and I had hoped that.
- 1:52Speaker 2: You'd be able to get it back without it being damaged.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It sounds as though that's not the case in terms
- 1:59Speaker 1: of that damage.
- 2:00Speaker 2: How tough is it going to be for you to
- 2:02Speaker 2: be able to get this stuff fixed.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's sort of all very specialized equipment, so we're in
- 2:09Speaker 3: discussions with the sort of the special needs to supply
- 2:14Speaker 3: is now to see what wait times and everything. But
- 2:18Speaker 3: it was six months to get the chair in general,
- 2:22Speaker 3: so hopefully it's not that long without it. So at
- 2:28Speaker 3: this stage, I'm not sure how long it's going to
- 2:30Speaker 3: take to get it repaired. The car has been detailed
- 2:36Speaker 3: and the filth that was inside it has been cleaned
- 2:42Speaker 3: out by detailer over the weekend, so we got that
- 2:48Speaker 3: done pretty quickly. But yeah, the damage to the car
- 2:54Speaker 3: seat belts and the child restraints, we're not sure how
- 2:59Speaker 3: long it's going to take, hopefully quick, but yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Like, can you just talk us through what that means
- 3:07Speaker 1: for your young fellow.
- 3:08Speaker 2: How old is he?
- 3:10Speaker 3: He's five and a half, so yeah, we've got to
- 3:15Speaker 3: use that car to take him to and from school
- 3:18Speaker 3: in at Memelak School in Alowa. So without that, we're
- 3:23Speaker 3: sort of putting him in car seats that aren't quite
- 3:27Speaker 3: suitable for him. And it requires a lot more physical
- 3:30Speaker 3: lifting from myself. So I need to take a bit
- 3:34Speaker 3: more time off work to do that lifting because it's, yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 3: it's not as easy to get him in and out
- 3:40Speaker 3: of a standard child's booster seat. So yeah, for the
- 3:47Speaker 3: length of time we don't have the seat, I'm going
- 3:50Speaker 3: to have to be taking a lot more time off
- 3:53Speaker 3: my work. And then yeah, he's also not yeah, not
- 3:59Speaker 3: a comfort ball in the seat. So oh, it's pretty
- 4:05Speaker 3: distressing to not have that, you know, to not have
- 4:08Speaker 3: that seat.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a bloody stress on your like, it's
- 4:13Speaker 1: a stress on the whole family and a totally unnecessary
- 4:16Speaker 1: stress that is out of your control. You know, you
- 4:20Speaker 1: guys have got no control over that. Someone's pinched your
- 4:22Speaker 1: car and you know to then to then cut the seatbelt,
- 4:26Speaker 1: particularly on that special chair, is just beyond comprehendible.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Really, it truly is. Yeah, once you've already nixed someone's car,
- 4:36Speaker 3: you think that's enough. But yeah, to leave them then return, yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 3: return it. But yeah, for us to get it back
- 4:44Speaker 3: and find that it was damaged in that way, yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 3: pretty distressing. And like I said, it was, it was
- 4:51Speaker 3: left in a pretty gross way inside too. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just yeah, and it's like it's not on.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It's not on for so many reasons. But it makes
- 5:04Speaker 1: me feel really sad that your little families had to
- 5:07Speaker 1: go through that, and particularly the young fella. And you know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you're obviously needing to take that extra time off work,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and you're a good dad. That's what wonderful good dads do.
- 5:18Speaker 1: You know, we all step up to the plate when
- 5:20Speaker 1: we have to. But the fact that none of this
- 5:22Speaker 1: has been in your control I find really disappointing. Luke,
- 5:27Speaker 1: do you have any idea how like, how much any
- 5:30Speaker 1: of this is going to cost you?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Not at the moment. Yeah, I mean, obviously we can.
- 5:36Speaker 3: There was a there was a baby car seat, so
- 5:40Speaker 3: that's easy to sort of get replaced. And yeah, they're
- 5:44Speaker 3: sort of in the six to seven hundred dollar range.
- 5:47Speaker 3: But yeah, the repair on the rest of the car,
- 5:52Speaker 3: you know, the detailing six hundred dollars the car seat
- 5:55Speaker 3: belt and that. Yeah, I don't know just yet.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah, early day.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Well, please keep in contact with us and you know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I do let us know how you know, how it
- 6:05Speaker 1: all progresses. Mate, Is this the first time that your
- 6:08Speaker 1: family has sort of been, you know, victims of crime.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I mean on a long territory and we have been
- 6:19Speaker 3: broken into in the past. And yeah, and also more recently,
- 6:24Speaker 3: my brother in law's grandmother has been assaulted in Nightcliff
- 6:29Speaker 3: who has been on the news. She's ninety five years
- 6:33Speaker 3: old and was sort of assaulted in her own home.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Someone came in to steal her purse. So yeah, close.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Just recently, in the last week, there's been a bit
- 6:42Speaker 3: of yeah, oh that's bloody terrible amongst our amongst our
- 6:51Speaker 3: close family and Dawn here and yeah, always unfortunately, never
- 6:58Speaker 3: too far from in the territory, but yeah, just especially
- 7:03Speaker 3: in the last week week and a half, it's been
- 7:05Speaker 3: pretty close to our family.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and I did. I saw.
- 7:12Speaker 1: The ninety five year old will your brother in law's grandma.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I saw her in the paper, and she seemed like
- 7:17Speaker 1: such a tough old stick.
- 7:19Speaker 2: She seemed like a wonderful woman.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, she's she's always sort of been coming up
- 7:26Speaker 3: to the territory during the cooler months. Just recently, in
- 7:29Speaker 3: the last year and a half has moved up here
- 7:31Speaker 3: to get a bit more support from her son, my
- 7:35Speaker 3: brother in law's dad.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Oh, mate, it's not a good welcome to the territory
- 7:40Speaker 3: for her. It's not sort of a good sort of
- 7:45Speaker 3: welcome to Jingly.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Oh it's not.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Look, I really feel for you, and you know, look,
- 7:52Speaker 1: there's not a huge amount that I can do to help.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And I mean, if there is, please do tell me.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But every week I do give out our territory and
- 8:01Speaker 1: of the Week. Now I know it's only Monday morning,
- 8:03Speaker 1: so it's a very early call for me, But mate,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I would like to give you our territory and of
- 8:08Speaker 1: the week because it sounds as though you could use
- 8:10Speaker 1: a bit of a luck change and it is. It
- 8:13Speaker 1: is a beautiful fifty dollars voucher for Malone's Butchery out
- 8:17Speaker 1: there at Gateway. They're a wonderful butcher and they do
- 8:21Speaker 1: a fantastic job. So I know it's only a small gesture,
- 8:26Speaker 1: but one which I hope that you and your family
- 8:28Speaker 1: are able to enjoy.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So I do want to make you our territory and
- 8:31Speaker 2: of the week.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Mate.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Okay, thank you very much.
- 8:34Speaker 2: That's all right, Luke. Well, let me let me keep
- 8:37Speaker 2: you on the line.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I'll make sure that we've got your details so that
- 8:40Speaker 1: you are able to go out there and collect that voucher.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But please keep us up to date.
- 8:46Speaker 1: As to how things progress with the vehicle as well.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And if there is any way that you know, me
- 8:50Speaker 1: or any of our listeners are able to help do
- 8:52Speaker 1: let us know.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yeah, no, thank you again for just putting it out
- 8:57Speaker 3: there because that's that community involvement. As how we got
- 9:00Speaker 3: the car back, Yeah, that was damaged that it could
- 9:04Speaker 3: have been a lot worse if they held on to
- 9:05Speaker 3: it for a longer period of time. So thank you
- 9:08Speaker 3: very much as well.
- 9:09Speaker 2: No worries at all.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And look, I always think, you know, for the bad
- 9:12Speaker 1: things that we talk about, you know, for the bad
- 9:15Speaker 1: situations that some of us go through, like the one
- 9:17Speaker 1: that you've just gone through, the thing that always makes
- 9:20Speaker 1: me feel you know, all this makes me feel better
- 9:23Speaker 1: and certainly brings a smile on my face is the
- 9:26Speaker 1: way that the community rallies together. And and you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: when I think when people heard that the vehicle had
- 9:32Speaker 1: been stolen and the impact that it was going to
- 9:34Speaker 1: have on your little boy, a lot of people probably
- 9:37Speaker 1: wanted to try their best to help however they could.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Luke, thank you.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I appreciate your time this morning, mate, thanks so much
- 9:46Speaker 1: for having a chat with me.
- 9:48Speaker 3: You too, thank you, thank you.
