- 0:15Well, hello, everybody, and welcome to a very special edition of the ABA Coffee In The Park.
- 0:22My name is Cam Milliken, and I am here with my co-host extraordinaire, Jennifer Herrick, the Executive Director of the Acheson Business Association.
- 0:31Hello, Jennifer.
- 0:32Hello, Cam.
- 0:33Well, it is quite the snowy morning out here.
- 0:35It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
- 0:38I don't know where this came from.
- 0:39It wasn't forecasted.
- 0:41No, it wasn't, that's the thing, but man, it is snowing.
- 0:44Snowfall warning.
- 0:45Yeah, snowfall warning, in effect.
- 0:47That's right.
- 0:47Wow, like it is Christmas.
- 0:50It is.
- 0:50Yeah.
- 0:51We will have snow for Christmas.
- 0:52No kidding, eh?
- 0:53It's going to be amazing.
- 0:54Anyway, yeah, today there's a lot of snow.
- 0:56And like I said, this is a very special edition of the ABA Coffee In The Park because this is...
- 1:02This is our Christmas edition.
- 1:04Our Christmas edition.
- 1:05Like the Thanksgiving edition.
- 1:06That's right.
- 1:07And so we're going to talk all things Christmas today.
- 1:09We are.
- 1:09But before we do that, we want to let you know that we're coming to you live from the Wall Coffee Roasters in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 1:18That's right.
- 1:19And so if you hear some noises in the background, people talking, coffee machines whirring, whatever is going on, it's because we're at the coffee shop.
- 1:26And you know what?
- 1:27It's busy in here today.
- 1:28No kidding.
- 1:29For the weather outside.
- 1:30If the weather outside is frightful.
- 1:32Yeah, people are coming into the coffee shop.
- 1:34They are.
- 1:34It's amazing.
- 1:35You know what it is?
- 1:36No.
- 1:36Nobody wants to work the week before Christmas.
- 1:39Too close to Christmas.
- 1:41Nobody wants to work.
- 1:42Everybody is coming to the coffee shop.
- 1:43Exactly.
- 1:44So, if you are listening to this, well, this will be released, well, actually tomorrow.
- 1:48Tomorrow.
- 1:49Yeah.
- 1:50But you can come to the coffee shop.
- 1:51And by the way, the coffee shop, Jennifer, great gift ideas here at the coffee shop.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:57So, you will listen to this episode at noon on Thursday.
- 2:02There's still time to come to The Wall Coffee Roaster Friday.
- 2:05I believe Michael's open Saturday, maybe even Monday before Christmas.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:10And get stocking stuffers, coffee, gift cards for Uncle George.
- 2:16That's right.
- 2:17$200 gift card.
- 2:18What's a better gift?
- 2:20He's got merch.
- 2:22He has t-shirts and sweatshirts.
- 2:24Yeah.
- 2:24And I think even like coffee presses, he's got a variety.
- 2:28And then while you're here, he's got like four or five specialty Christmas coffee.
- 2:32You can try one of those.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34So come on down to The Wall Coffee Roaster.
- 2:36You know what?
- 2:36And yeah.
- 2:37Support, shop local.
- 2:38Shop local.
- 2:39Shop local.
- 2:40It's awesome.
- 2:40So anyway, before we go any further though, we got some people we need to thank.
- 2:45So let's do that.
- 2:46Well, we'd like to thank our gold corporate sponsors, which include the MyShak group of companies, Genics and Parkland County.
- 2:52Wow.
- 2:52Thank you to these businesses for all that they've done for the ABA in 2024 and jumping on board as our gold corporate sponsors.
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:01We really appreciate it.
- 3:02They're amazing.
- 3:02And without them, we could not do what we do.
- 3:05That's right.
- 3:06Thanks.
- 3:06Appreciate it.
- 3:07So, let's talk Christmas.
- 3:10So, first question.
- 3:12Yes.
- 3:12Are you done your shopping?
- 3:15You know, the honest truth is no.
- 3:17I actually, I'm going to, okay, total transparency here.
- 3:23I don't actually do a lot of shopping.
- 3:26My daughter, I send her out to shop for my wife.
- 3:30Smart.
- 3:30Yeah, she does that.
- 3:31I just give her the money and she does it.
- 3:33Matter of fact, while we're sitting here, I just got a text and the text said I got it.
- 3:38We're done.
- 3:38Oh, see, then you are done.
- 3:40Yeah.
- 3:40And then my wife, she shops for me and my daughter.
- 3:45So yeah, I don't really do much.
- 3:47I have to be honest.
- 3:48You know what?
- 3:49Oh, if you can avoid the malls, people, avoid the malls.
- 3:53No, don't go to the malls.
- 3:54Terrible.
- 3:55Have you tried to go to West Edmonton Mall close to Christmas?
- 3:58I only go to West Edmonton Mall for one reason, and that's Chick-fil-A, because I love Chick-fil-A.
- 4:03But you're right.
- 4:04There's just people everywhere.
- 4:05The lineups.
- 4:06And I can't handle it.
- 4:07No, no, there's just too many people.
- 4:09You know, no.
- 4:10So Amazon is my best friend.
- 4:11Well, yeah, Amazon is good, but I really do encourage people to shop local.
- 4:15No kidding.
- 4:16Like if you're in an area where there's some nice little shops that sell some cool things.
- 4:19Yeah, go there.
- 4:20I agree.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22There's some support.
- 4:23Why not?
- 4:24The mall doesn't.
- 4:24Well, I better not say that.
- 4:25I'll get in trouble.
- 4:26But you know, just support local.
- 4:28But the local people that you are supporting, buying your Christmas gifts, give so much back to the community.
- 4:34And we've had guests on our show.
- 4:36That's right.
- 4:37That are great local businesses.
- 4:39They really are.
- 4:40And they sell great products.
- 4:41They do.
- 4:41And so yeah, check it out.
- 4:43Exactly.
- 4:43Yeah, it's good.
- 4:44I like it.
- 4:45I like that idea.
- 4:46So anyway, if you don't haven't done your Christmas shopping yet, if you're a guy like me, Shoppers Drug Mart is open till midnight on the 24th.
- 4:54You can get Lotto tickets.
- 4:55You can get soap.
- 4:57You can get, oh, you know what?
- 4:58You can even buy socks there.
- 5:00So you're good.
- 5:01You can get socks.
- 5:03You can get soap.
- 5:04You can get perfume.
- 5:06Chocolates.
- 5:06Chocolates.
- 5:07Oh yeah.
- 5:07Yep.
- 5:08All that last minute stuff that makes it look like you shop days in advance.
- 5:12But you didn't really.
- 5:13But anyway, so yeah, so Christmas is coming.
- 5:15Jennifer, are you ready for Christmas?
- 5:18I'm as ready as I'm going to be.
- 5:19Yeah.
- 5:20Yeah.
- 5:20No kidding, eh?
- 5:21You know what?
- 5:21There comes a point.
- 5:22Well, Christmas starts so early.
- 5:25Like, August at Costco, I know, August, they got trees up.
- 5:28It's like really, really.
- 5:29And the same thing with the Christmas music.
- 5:31I know.
- 5:31You know what?
- 5:32I love a good Christmas carol, but for the love of goodness, people, do not start playing it until December.
- 5:38Exactly.
- 5:39I agree.
- 5:40I don't need two months of Christmas music.
- 5:42100%.
- 5:42But now, so that being said, yes, while we're on the topic, tell me what is your favorite Christmas carol?
- 5:48Oh, easy.
- 5:49I don't even have to think about this.
- 5:50What is it?
- 5:50It's Oh Holy Night.
- 5:51Oh Holy Night.
- 5:52And I was listening to it last night.
- 5:53Well, multiple versions of it last night.
- 5:57It's just, I don't know what it is.
- 5:58It's just such a soothing song, and I love it.
- 6:01It is.
- 6:01I love it too.
- 6:02That is a great, great Christmas carol.
- 6:05Oh Holy Night.
- 6:05And I'm like you, there's a lot of different versions out there, and some of them are pretty incredible.
- 6:10I love Oh Holy Night.
- 6:11What else?
- 6:13Oh, what else?
- 6:14What?
- 6:15I'm trying to think of my playlist last night as I'm doing laundry.
- 6:18That's right.
- 6:19Listening to Christmas music, doing laundry.
- 6:21Some things you never stop.
- 6:22You know what?
- 6:24Christmas does not stop laundry.
- 6:26Just because it's Christmas doesn't mean the clothes don't get dirty.
- 6:29Exactly.
- 6:30I like a little Hark the Herald.
- 6:32Hark the Herald.
- 6:33That's nice.
- 6:34Yeah.
- 6:34Yeah.
- 6:35Yeah.
- 6:35You and I were talking about the 12 days of Christmas, and we couldn't honestly, people, we got stuck at nine.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:42No, we did pretty good.
- 6:43No, we got eight wrong.
- 6:44We mixed up a couple of them.
- 6:46We had more geese, I think, than hens or something like that.
- 6:49But we got pretty good.
- 6:51We got the Lords of Leaping wrong.
- 6:52Lords of Leaping were way off.
- 6:54Way off.
- 6:54Too many Lords of Leaping.
- 6:56So yeah, we should sing it for you, but we're not going to.
- 7:01No, because this will...
- 7:02No.
- 7:02No.
- 7:02But anyway, yeah, that was kind of good.
- 7:04And what about you?
- 7:05Well, I'm like you.
- 7:06I love Oh Holy Night.
- 7:07I really do.
- 7:07I think that's a fantastic carol.
- 7:10And like I say, lots of great little versions on that one.
- 7:14And I really like Silent Night.
- 7:16Silent Night, because I always remember Silent Night is the last carol we played in the church on Christmas Eve.
- 7:22And you had your little candle and everybody got to light their little candle, and you lit the candle next to you.
- 7:27I never got a candle because there was fear of fire.
- 7:30Well, you know what?
- 7:30The candle at church always worried me a little bit.
- 7:32Candles were a new period.
- 7:34Well, this is another podcast, maybe in the New Year, but you're right.
- 7:37But yeah, but I really like, and the other reason I like Silent Night is because we have really good friends here in Edmonton who were related, are related to Hans Gruber in Germany, who wrote Silent Night.
- 7:49Yeah, that's amazing.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51And so that was kind of cool knowing that you were singing a song that somebody standing there, that was their relative who helped write that.
- 7:57That's fantastic.
- 7:58Those are my favorites.
- 7:59I, you know, I'm not much into the fancy dancy, the Mariah Carey kind of stuff.
- 8:03No, not the modern, the traditional.
- 8:05I would agree with you.
- 8:06Yeah, so that's kind of cool.
- 8:07Yep, carols are a big part of it.
- 8:09I love when people sing them.
- 8:11I love all the versions of them.
- 8:12And kind of just, yeah, but not in August.
- 8:15Not in August.
- 8:17No, no.
- 8:18December 1st.
- 8:19Yes.
- 8:19We should have a law that you can't play carols until December 1st.
- 8:23Maybe we should pass this.
- 8:24We should.
- 8:25Should we advocate for this?
- 8:26Yeah, we'll advocate for this.
- 8:27That's right, referendum.
- 8:28Yeah.
- 8:29Anyway, I don't think people would care.
- 8:31Probably not.
- 8:31Okay.
- 8:32So carols, wonderful.
- 8:33Now, let's talk about some other things about Christmas.
- 8:36All right.
- 8:37What about, what is your favorite baking at Christmas?
- 8:45Well, I love all the baking at Christmas.
- 8:47Don't we all?
- 8:48Yeah, don't we all?
- 8:49And by the way, to those companies that dropped off baking at the ABA office, thank you.
- 8:55Yeah, I'm telling you.
- 8:57I just need to say, I was on a pretty good workout routine.
- 9:00That has stopped.
- 9:01Yeah, no.
- 9:01I'm not picking that up till the New Year.
- 9:03Me either.
- 9:03What's the point?
- 9:04What's the point?
- 9:04No, exactly.
- 9:06What's the point of riding my bike for like 35 minutes?
- 9:09When you're eating 17 shortbread cookies.
- 9:11Exactly.
- 9:12And downing like four gingerbread men.
- 9:14No, there's no point.
- 9:14No, there's no point.
- 9:15Everybody needs a break.
- 9:16That's on hiatus.
- 9:17Yeah.
- 9:18And it's not like a New Year's resolution.
- 9:19No, no.
- 9:20But I'm just, yeah.
- 9:21I agree.
- 9:21So thank you.
- 9:22Thank you.
- 9:23For everybody who dropped off baking.
- 9:24Absolutely.
- 9:25So what is your favorite baking?
- 9:28You know, it goes back to something that my grandma made.
- 9:32And so my grandma was from Norway on my dad's side.
- 9:36And she made something called a rosette.
- 9:40A rosette.
- 9:41So it's kind of like a dough that's deep fried.
- 9:45And then put in something, it's called a rosette iron, but it's like a waffle iron.
- 9:50And it makes a little like rose kind of pattern.
- 9:53Oh yeah, my mom used to do that, yeah.
- 9:54And then a little sugar is sprinkled over.
- 9:56Oh, so good.
- 9:58Especially if they're right out of the deep fryer.
- 9:59Yes, amazing, amazing.
- 10:02Okay, well, I didn't know it was called that.
- 10:04That's kind of cool.
- 10:05Okay, what else?
- 10:06Butterhorns.
- 10:07Butterhorns.
- 10:07Yes, my mom makes butterhorns.
- 10:09Butterhorns.
- 10:10Yeah, I love the butterhorns.
- 10:11Now you're going to see your mom and dad.
- 10:13I am.
- 10:13Is your mom going to make you butterhorns?
- 10:14Well, I sure hope she is.
- 10:16Okay, this is a notice to Jennifer's mom from Cam.
- 10:19And she will be listening.
- 10:20Could you please send a couple of butterhorns back for Cam?
- 10:23We'll make sure we get butterhorns back for you.
- 10:25Okay, good.
- 10:25Because I've heard all about these butterhorns.
- 10:28That's right.
- 10:28And it's not fair if I don't get a butterhorn.
- 10:31So they are, it's kind of like a pastry that's wrapped over and then icing over it.
- 10:37Now, I'm a little odd because...
- 10:40No.
- 10:40I'm a little odd.
- 10:41No.
- 10:42Okay.
- 10:42I mean, they're great fresh, but you know what else I love them?
- 10:45I love to eat them frozen.
- 10:46Frozen?
- 10:47I don't know why.
- 10:48Okay.
- 10:49All right.
- 10:49So it's okay if you freeze them and bring them back.
- 10:52It is.
- 10:52It's okay.
- 10:53Okay.
- 10:53But we definitely have to try this.
- 10:54We will.
- 10:55Because you've just talked endlessly about these butterhorns.
- 10:58Now, anything with the word butter, that's good right there.
- 11:01That's what I'm saying.
- 11:02So that's awesome.
- 11:02Yeah.
- 11:03And you?
- 11:03Well, my mom used to make these little cornflake balls where she'd smash up cornflakes, and then she'd buy that Macintosh toffee.
- 11:11Oh, the toffee.
- 11:11You know, the toffee bars?
- 11:12Oh, I love that.
- 11:13And she'd melt that and pour it all over the cornflakes, and she'd make these little balls.
- 11:17They were like amazing.
- 11:19You put them in the fridge and get them all cold and hard.
- 11:22Oh, those were unbelievable.
- 11:24Can you buy that toffee anymore?
- 11:26You know, no, you can, but you got to look for it.
- 11:29Not every store sells it.
- 11:31Just a little hint.
- 11:31You know who always has it?
- 11:33Who always carries it?
- 11:34Freson Brothers.
- 11:34Good to know.
- 11:35We know what?
- 11:36They've got amazing candy selection.
- 11:37Oh, they've got the best candy selection everywhere.
- 11:39They do.
- 11:39And I was there the other day.
- 11:40They have a great Christmas candy section.
- 11:43Amazing.
- 11:44So my mom made those, and then she made nanaimo bars.
- 11:47The best nanaimo bars I ever had in my life.
- 11:49And then she made these things called filbert fingers, and it was a dough with filbert nuts in it, and she would shape them like a little, well, either a frown or a smile, depending on how you put it.
- 11:59And then she'd dip it in milk chocolate.
- 12:01That sounds amazing.
- 12:02Unbelievable.
- 12:04So those are my favorite.
- 12:06And shortbread.
- 12:07Everybody loves shortbread.
- 12:08It's true.
- 12:08Shortbread cookies are amazing.
- 12:10With the little cherry thing in the middle.
- 12:12I like that.
- 12:13Yeah, that's really good.
- 12:13Yeah.
- 12:14Okay.
- 12:14Okay.
- 12:14But here, as we're talking baking, this is going to be a little controversial.
- 12:19Okay.
- 12:20Fruitcake or no fruitcake?
- 12:22No, no, no, no fruitcake.
- 12:23See, this is why you and I get along.
- 12:25Yeah, no fruitcake.
- 12:27First of all, it's way too hard.
- 12:29It reminds me of bricks.
- 12:30You can like build a house with fruitcake.
- 12:32It's like so heavy.
- 12:33Yeah, no, it's heavy.
- 12:34And I don't want fruit in my...
- 12:37And I don't know, it's just that whatever that dough is, if that's the right word, because I don't know anything about fruitcake, it doesn't seem to all...
- 12:44What is that green fruit in there?
- 12:46What fruit is green?
- 12:47I don't know, but yeah, I'm a little leery of that.
- 12:49No.
- 12:50So no, I'm not into fruitcake.
- 12:51No, me either.
- 12:52Yeah, no.
- 12:52So I know people like it.
- 12:54I know.
- 12:54My mom loved it.
- 12:55She thought it was great.
- 12:56You know what, I think it's generational thing.
- 12:57Yeah, I think so.
- 12:58Cup of coffee and fruitcake.
- 12:59But I'm going to be honest, I go to Costco and they sell their fruitcakes.
- 13:04People are buying them.
- 13:04I know.
- 13:05There's a fruitcake shortage.
- 13:06Like the toilet paper shortage we went through.
- 13:08They're buying the fruitcake.
- 13:10It's unbelievable.
- 13:11I agree with you on that.
- 13:12Anyway, yeah.
- 13:12So I'm not big on the fruitcake.
- 13:13Me either.
- 13:14No.
- 13:14Don't want to go that direction.
- 13:15Okay, good.
- 13:16Now, here's one that I love talking about this.
- 13:20This is one of my favorites because at Christmas, there is a ton of great movies and TV shows that come out.
- 13:28So, Jennifer, list your top three Christmas movies or TV shows.
- 13:35Okay, easy.
- 13:35Okay.
- 13:36Christmas Vacation.
- 13:38Number one.
- 13:39Love Christmas Vacation.
- 13:40It's just so funny.
- 13:42Isn't it?
- 13:43You know why?
- 13:45You know why?
- 13:45Because I think all of us have a little Christmas Vacation in our families.
- 13:50It's just, you can watch that, and I've watched it over and over and over, and every time I pick out something different.
- 13:57I gotta be honest.
- 13:57Now, I'm gonna get flack for this.
- 13:59Don't send emails.
- 14:00The part that I love the most is when that cat gets fried in the tree.
- 14:05I just fall on the floor laughing.
- 14:07That is so funny.
- 14:08The best for me is he's waiting and waiting for his Christmas bonus, and he gets a Jelly Of The Month Club.
- 14:15Seriously.
- 14:17I love it.
- 14:17That's just the greatest.
- 14:18That is a great one.
- 14:19And he goes postal.
- 14:20Yeah, he goes postal at Christmas.
- 14:22Which some of us, yeah, anyway, we'll go there.
- 14:24If I got Jelly Of The Month Club, you'd go postal.
- 14:26Maybe.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:27Note to self, Jennifer, no Jelly Of The Month for Christmas.
- 14:30Okay.
- 14:31Number two for you.
- 14:32It's not a movie.
- 14:33Yeah.
- 14:33It's a classic TV show.
- 14:35The Charlie Brown Christmas Special.
- 14:37Charlie Brown Christmas.
- 14:38Special.
- 14:38Yes.
- 14:39Okay.
- 14:40Can we just talk about the Charlie Brown Christmas?
- 14:42Yes.
- 14:42As long as I can remember, I remember that was a tradition in our house.
- 14:47As a kid, I couldn't wait for that to be on.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:50Do you know that that first was aired in 1965?
- 14:53Is that when it was?
- 14:54And it was aired on CBS Television, and it was actually kind of controversial.
- 15:00And you know why?
- 15:00Because it was religious?
- 15:01It was religious, and they thought it's too religious.
- 15:04But Charles Scholes said, No, if you want it, this is the way it's going to be.
- 15:08And they aired it, and it's turned out to be the most popular and watched Christmas TV show.
- 15:14It's so good.
- 15:15Don't you love it?
- 15:15I love it.
- 15:16Don't you love it when they act out the Christmas story, and Linus, he does the whole from Lukey, and they all play a different character?
- 15:24And Snoopy is all the animals?
- 15:27Snoopy is the best.
- 15:29He plays the sheep. He plays the cow Exactly.
- 15:31He does it all.
- 15:32He does it all.
- 15:33I love that.
- 15:34I know.
- 15:34It's the best.
- 15:35It is the best.
- 15:37You can't have Christmas without watching a Charlie Brown Christmas.
- 15:39I agree.
- 15:39And then at the end, it's great because everybody's so sad about the tree, that Charlie Brown failed once again.
- 15:45Poor Charlie Brown.
- 15:46You know what?
- 15:47Charlie Brown.
- 15:48Poor Charlie Brown.
- 15:49They're so hard on Charlie Brown.
- 15:51Charlie Brown.
- 15:53And Snoopy saves the day with his decorated dog house.
- 15:57This is why I love Snoopy.
- 15:58Snoopy is the best.
- 15:59He is.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:00No.
- 16:00Okay.
- 16:01And number three.
- 16:02Number three is The Grinch.
- 16:03The Grinch.
- 16:04Yes.
- 16:04The movie, the TV show, the cartoon, which one?
- 16:07So the original Grinch, which I don't know what year.
- 16:10That seems like it should be a 1960s one too.
- 16:12Cindy Luhu.
- 16:14But I also love, and this, he did such a great job, the Jim Carrey version of The Grinch.
- 16:21You know, I'm going to be honest with you, when that first came out or was coming out, I thought to myself, how do you, there's no way you could do kind of a live Grinch.
- 16:30And then they did it and he did it.
- 16:31It's phenomenal.
- 16:32It is phenomenal.
- 16:33Yeah, it really is.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:34I love that movie.
- 16:35I do too.
- 16:36I love it.
- 16:36That's a great movie.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:38Okay.
- 16:38Okay.
- 16:38Yours?
- 16:39Mine.
- 16:39Okay.
- 16:39Number one would be Home Alone.
- 16:42I love Home Alone.
- 16:43Home Alone is good.
- 16:44And I don't know if it's because I want to be like him.
- 16:47Yes.
- 16:47Kevin, I want to be like Kevin.
- 16:49He was amazing.
- 16:50I just loved it.
- 16:51All his little pranks and everything to save his home.
- 16:54I love that.
- 16:55And not that I was ever left, that I can remember being left Home Alone, but I would want to be like Kevin.
- 17:00Yeah.
- 17:01If I was left Home Alone.
- 17:01Good movie.
- 17:02Good movie.
- 17:02Number two, I'm with you.
- 17:04TV show Charlie Brown Christmas.
- 17:06You know, I'm big into Charlie Brown.
- 17:07I do.
- 17:08I have a Charlie Brown Christmas tree in my office.
- 17:10You do.
- 17:10And I love Charlie Brown Christmas.
- 17:12And then number three is a serious movie, but it's very old.
- 17:16I love Scrooge, but the Alastair Sim version in black and white.
- 17:22I love that movie.
- 17:23Not Mickey Mouse, Christmas Carol, and Scrooge McDuck?
- 17:25No, no, no, no.
- 17:26No, I don't.
- 17:28No, I don't.
- 17:29No, actually, I don't know if I've ever.
- 17:31Oh, you must have seen that one.
- 17:32But anyway, I love it.
- 17:34I love it in black and white.
- 17:36And you know when I love watching it?
- 17:37I love watching it late Christmas Eve.
- 17:40Everybody's gone to bed.
- 17:41Only the tree lights are on.
- 17:43And I'm sitting there watching Scrooge and the ghosts kind of scare me a little bit.
- 17:47It is a little frightening.
- 17:47I take my blanket and I pull it up.
- 17:49Like Linus.
- 17:50Yeah, like Linus.
- 17:51Exactly.
- 17:52And so, yeah, so I'm like, that's how I do that.
- 17:55So those are my favorite three.
- 17:57Those are good three.
- 17:58I really like them.
- 17:59And you know what?
- 17:59There's so many great Christmas movies out there.
- 18:01There really is.
- 18:02There really is.
- 18:03I like the old traditional ones and some of the new ones are really good.
- 18:06They are.
- 18:06Christmas With The Cranks and stuff like that.
- 18:08You know, they're pretty good.
- 18:10Okay, what else should we talk about here?
- 18:13Oh, I have one for you.
- 18:14Okay.
- 18:15Does your family do stockings?
- 18:17Oh, yeah.
- 18:18Okay.
- 18:19But here's the question.
- 18:21When do you open your stockings?
- 18:22Oh, Christmas Day.
- 18:23Christmas Day.
- 18:24Well, Christmas morning.
- 18:25Morning, right.
- 18:26Before you open again.
- 18:27Yes, before you do presents.
- 18:28Right.
- 18:29Okay.
- 18:29You?
- 18:30Well, we're the same.
- 18:31Yeah, we do it Christmas morning, and we have good stockings.
- 18:35Can I just say, stockings have come a long way.
- 18:38I know, but can I just say, it's expensive these days to fill a stocking.
- 18:42Sometimes you're spending more on the stocking than you are on the gift, which is getting a little crazy.
- 18:46What's the one thing you don't like getting in your stocking?
- 18:49Don't give me oranges in my stocking.
- 18:51Oranges.
- 18:51A mandarin orange.
- 18:52No.
- 18:52I don't like that.
- 18:53Yeah, you don't like mandarin oranges in your stocking.
- 18:55Well, not in my stocking.
- 18:57Don't give me fruit.
- 18:58No, I hear you.
- 18:58This is part of the fruitcake.
- 19:00Exactly.
- 19:00No, no.
- 19:01You?
- 19:02Well, gum.
- 19:03Why don't you like gum?
- 19:04I love gum.
- 19:05Because again, I think, and this is no reflection on anything, anyone or anything, but the gum, I think they buy at the dollar store.
- 19:13And I kind of have this thing that dollar store gum has been sitting there for like nine years.
- 19:17Sorry, dollar store.
- 19:18Don't come after us.
- 19:19But they get the gum from other stores that don't like, save on it and they don't sell.
- 19:23So I don't like the gum.
- 19:25You're getting gum from 2021.
- 19:27No.
- 19:27Well, that's it.
- 19:29And you go to chew it, and next thing you know, January, you're at the dentist.
- 19:32So yeah.
- 19:33So and the other thing I don't like in my stocking is I don't like socks.
- 19:36No.
- 19:36Well, yeah, but socks are a staple.
- 19:38I know.
- 19:39I know they are.
- 19:40But I just, I'm not, you know, because I always think of the Mr.
- 19:43Bean Christmas.
- 19:44Oh yeah.
- 19:44And he, but that was, he was ingenious because he had his sock and he had the other sock in the stock.
- 19:50He did.
- 19:51So when he pulled it out, he had a pair of socks.
- 19:53Anyway, I'm not big on socks.
- 19:54But I love socks.
- 19:55I love getting socks for Christmas, just not in my stock.
- 19:57Just not in your stocking.
- 19:58Okay.
- 19:58The one thing I do like getting in my stocking, lottery tickets.
- 20:01I was going to say scratch tickets.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:04I love that.
- 20:04Me too.
- 20:05Oh yeah.
- 20:05I don't usually win, but I love getting them.
- 20:07Me either, but that's okay.
- 20:09Okay.
- 20:09All right.
- 20:09So okay.
- 20:10Now, let's move on.
- 20:11Now, here's another one.
- 20:12Here's another.
- 20:12Do you have real or artificial tree?
- 20:18Growing up, it was a real tree.
- 20:20A real tree growing up.
- 20:21Yes, always a real tree growing up until, I can't even remember until what age we switched.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26Now, it's artificial.
- 20:27Artificial.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:28Just easier.
- 20:29You know what?
- 20:30The lights are done.
- 20:31I know.
- 20:32You can just fold it up, put it away.
- 20:33I hear you.
- 20:34It's just easy.
- 20:35I don't have to worry about...
- 20:36You know my fear of fire?
- 20:37Yes.
- 20:38I don't have to worry about my tree catching on fire.
- 20:41You know what?
- 20:41I make you shut the office tree lights on, even though it's artificial.
- 20:44We have an artificial tree, and Jennifer is always at me about turning the artificial tree lights off.
- 20:51When we go home at night.
- 20:53I just don't want to get into it, because it's just been, I don't know.
- 20:58I don't know.
- 20:58But anyway, so I'm just going to say, the other night I was watching TV, and that guy on PBS, Rick Steves, he travels all over, and he was doing a show from Germany and Austria, and they were doing traditions.
- 21:09Did you know back in the day, they used real trees, but they put real candles on the Christmas trees?
- 21:16It's a little unbelievable.
- 21:17And I thought of you right away, and I thought, oh, right now Jennifer would be having like a mental breakdown.
- 21:22I would.
- 21:22She'd be going crazy.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:24And they put like real candles on the tree.
- 21:26I know.
- 21:27And somebody should do a little study on this and statistically look into how many houses burnt down.
- 21:32But I'm just saying, I couldn't believe that.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:35I know.
- 21:35Because now it's artificial and it's, you know, like you say, the lights are on.
- 21:40We went out and bought a cover for our tree.
- 21:42We don't even take our tree apart.
- 21:44We just cover it and put it in the garage.
- 21:46Oh, see, that's smart.
- 21:47So every year we just take it out.
- 21:49Now we take the decorations off and stuff like that.
- 21:51And then we take the cover off.
- 21:52Yeah.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53Okay.
- 21:54All right.
- 21:54So we've settled that.
- 21:55All right.
- 21:55What else?
- 21:56Christmas related.
- 21:57What should we talk about?
- 21:58Well, I know you have a love for inflatables.
- 22:01Oh, I love Christmas inflatables.
- 22:04But do you have one at your house?
- 22:06Not allowed.
- 22:06Not allowed.
- 22:07No, not allowed.
- 22:09It's a bit of an issue because I really want one.
- 22:12I love them.
- 22:13Every year I see a new one.
- 22:14I think, oh, that would look so great in my yard, but I'm not allowed.
- 22:17And we won't get into why I'm not allowed, but I'm just not allowed.
- 22:20And so my neighbors, some of the neighbors have, and I drive down the street and I see people with inflatables all over their yards.
- 22:26I think it's great.
- 22:26The only time I don't like it is at night.
- 22:28They turn them off and they're all like, bool, bool, bool, onto the ground.
- 22:31But can I just say that inflatables do look much better when there's actually snow on the ground.
- 22:36And they look a little silly when like, it's just on your lawn.
- 22:39I'm with you.
- 22:40I agree with that.
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:40It looks nice with snow on the ground.
- 22:42But yeah, do you have any inflatables?
- 22:44No.
- 22:44Now what?
- 22:45Now I know what you like.
- 22:46You like Christmas lights.
- 22:47Christmas lights.
- 22:48Yes.
- 22:48But do I have any at my house?
- 22:50No.
- 22:50Because?
- 22:52Tell us why.
- 22:54And he will listen to this podcast.
- 22:55That's right.
- 22:56My husband, Ryan, sorry, man, fell off the roof.
- 22:58I know.
- 23:00That's not good.
- 23:00He's darn lucky.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:01And he fell off because he it was a long story.
- 23:04Again, maybe another episode.
- 23:06Right.
- 23:06But no Christmas lights.
- 23:09Sorry, man.
- 23:10Sorry about that.
- 23:11I'm trying to convince him that we need those permanent lights.
- 23:13Do you know which ones I'm talking about?
- 23:14You want a company to come on and put those lights that you can change to any color during the year.
- 23:18If there's any company listening right now, give me a call.
- 23:24We'll give you a commercial spot.
- 23:25Seriously, we will give you.
- 23:26If you give Jennifer a good deal.
- 23:28Yes, we will.
- 23:28A permanent Christmas light.
- 23:29Yes.
- 23:30Because you want to use them all year.
- 23:31Well, I think it's so cool when I'm out walking the dogs at night and the Oilers game is on, and people have them like orange and blue, and it looks great.
- 23:40Exactly.
- 23:41I know.
- 23:41So, okay.
- 23:42So, well, all right.
- 23:43But you haven't convinced?
- 23:44No.
- 23:45Okay.
- 23:45But if you're listening, and that's your job, and that's what you do.
- 23:48Give me a call.
- 23:48Give Jennifer an email.
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:50Or a call, or whatever you do.
- 23:52And yeah.
- 23:53And so maybe you can get a deal going.
- 23:55All right.
- 23:57I don't have any Christmas lights.
- 23:58I do like seeing them.
- 24:00I'm not one of those guys to go driving through Candy Cane Lane.
- 24:03I don't do that.
- 24:04But I do like Christmas lights.
- 24:05I like seeing them.
- 24:06Yeah.
- 24:06They're nice.
- 24:07They're pretty festive.
- 24:08They are.
- 24:08And so kudos to all the people that do that.
- 24:10Yes.
- 24:11But thanks for making it nice for the rest of us.
- 24:13Agreed.
- 24:13Okay.
- 24:14What else about Christmas?
- 24:15What else about?
- 24:16Oh, oh, okay.
- 24:18Well, I don't know if I'm even going to ask you this because you don't buy the gifts.
- 24:22No, I don't.
- 24:23No.
- 24:25What's your preference?
- 24:26A wrapped gift or a gift bag?
- 24:28Okay.
- 24:29I do have a very strong opinion on this.
- 24:32I really do.
- 24:33And I believe the day we went to Christmas gift bags was a low point for Christmas.
- 24:39I think Christmas presents should be wrapped.
- 24:42I'm sorry.
- 24:43I just, first of all, okay, number one, anybody can look in the bag and see what's in there.
- 24:50Yeah, but that's when you seal the bag.
- 24:51And then, okay, so here's, you have to have the bag, you have to have tissue.
- 24:56Here's the thing with tissue.
- 24:57People over buy the bag, and then they feel, oh, it's just a little gift, and they have to stuff it with tissue.
- 25:04Okay, so then, you gotta get it through all the...
- 25:06Secondly, I've gotten gifts even recently.
- 25:09I won't mention from whom.
- 25:11I can't get the gift out of the bag.
- 25:13The box is too big, and those things frustrate me.
- 25:18Oh, I can't, and I'm struggling.
- 25:21You do have strong opinions about this.
- 25:23No, I really do.
- 25:24You really do.
- 25:24If I ever, no, anyway, so the wrapping paper, just tear it off and it's done.
- 25:30You're like a two-year-old, like...
- 25:32And it's done.
- 25:33Okay.
- 25:34All right.
- 25:34Now, what about, okay, so, sorry to people who sell, sorry to the dollar store that sells like a trillion...
- 25:41Hey, it's where I go every year to buy my bags.
- 25:43I know, my wife too, every year.
- 25:45It's like a trillion Christmas gift bags.
- 25:47But sometimes things won't fit in a box.
- 25:50You don't have a box big enough, so you need a gift bag.
- 25:53Just buy wrapping paper.
- 25:55No, no.
- 25:55And wrap them.
- 25:57Like, I know it's a little bit of work, and I'm not a good wrapping guy.
- 26:00I don't, I don't.
- 26:01But it's the thought that counts, not the, I'm not one of those fancy.
- 26:05No, I don't do fancy.
- 26:06I used to take gifts to the mall, and have them wrapped in there.
- 26:09I remember when they did that.
- 26:11Can they still do that?
- 26:12I don't know, because I don't buy the gifts.
- 26:14I haven't seen that advertised for a long time.
- 26:15No, I know.
- 26:16But that was a great idea.
- 26:16That was a great idea, and they did a wonderful job.
- 26:18I know.
- 26:19And you give it to them, and then you go have a coffee, and you come back, and your gifts are all done, and your family would go, Whoa! They thought you spent a lot of time and effort.
- 26:26I know.
- 26:27And I just let them believe that I did it.
- 26:28Yeah, who's going to say anything?
- 26:29They knew though, because they're like, he didn't do this, that's for sure.
- 26:32No.
- 26:32But anyway, okay.
- 26:34What about you?
- 26:34You like gift bags?
- 26:35Well, it's easy.
- 26:36I know.
- 26:37It's convenient, right?
- 26:38It's convenient.
- 26:38I know.
- 26:39Yeah, it's convenient.
- 26:40It's a combo.
- 26:41It's both.
- 26:41I do both.
- 26:42By the time Christmas rolls around, you're just looking for the easy way out of everything.
- 26:46It kind of are, right?
- 26:47Yeah.
- 26:48Yeah, I agree.
- 26:49Wow.
- 26:49Okay.
- 26:50So that's a lot of stuff at Christmas.
- 26:51It is a lot of stuff.
- 26:52Now, I think our picture that we're going to put up for this podcast, if you're on social media, you and I decorated some gingerbreads.
- 27:01And so...
- 27:02Gingerbread, yes.
- 27:04Man.
- 27:04Well, I don't know what they are, actually.
- 27:06I don't know.
- 27:07Anyway, I didn't...
- 27:08We'll call them gingerbread people.
- 27:10I guess so, yeah.
- 27:11But so we're going to put those up.
- 27:12And so if you feel so inclined to comment on our gingerbread people...
- 27:17Oh, boy, that don't...
- 27:19I don't know.
- 27:19Yeah, they're not...
- 27:21We're not...
- 27:21Yeah, I might still have the best.
- 27:23But anyway, we'll put it up on the social media when we drop this podcast.
- 27:26We will.
- 27:27And we can check it out.
- 27:27Yeah.
- 27:28Jennifer, wow, that went by really fast.
- 27:31That kind of covers Christmas for us.
- 27:33I know.
- 27:33Is there anything we left out?
- 27:35Well, probably, but...
- 27:36I know.
- 27:37Christmas is just...
- 27:39It always seems to sneak up every year.
- 27:40And I know, I know we have lots of time leading up, but...
- 27:44Well, August.
- 27:44I don't know.
- 27:45Starts in August.
- 27:46I know.
- 27:47And then it's here, and it's gone.
- 27:48And it's gone.
- 27:49And all the hoopla and everything is kind of over.
- 27:51Yeah, it's over.
- 27:51Yeah, it's kind of like that.
- 27:52Yeah, our pants don't fit, because we've had so much baking.
- 27:54Our pants don't fit.
- 27:55That's right.
- 27:57Oh, my goodness me.
- 27:58Yeah.
- 27:59Okay, so here's my other tip.
- 28:00Can I give a tip?
- 28:01Yeah, give a Christmas...
- 28:02We need Christmas tips.
- 28:03Don't dress up for Christmas dinner.
- 28:05I agree.
- 28:07Sweatpants.
- 28:08Honestly...
- 28:09If I could wear shorts, it's a little cold.
- 28:13But be comfy.
- 28:14I know.
- 28:15Wear loose pants.
- 28:16Exactly.
- 28:17What's...
- 28:17You don't need to dress up.
- 28:18No.
- 28:19I mean, and we never talked about this, but like, I don't know about your Christmas dinner, but my family, we have about 40 some people that come, and it's the full-on Christmas dinner.
- 28:27Full-on.
- 28:28Full-on.
- 28:29You know, I think you're the same.
- 28:31We talked about this.
- 28:32And it's everything.
- 28:33The turkey, the stuffing, the potatoes, the gravy, the everything.
- 28:37Why would you constrict yourself by wearing tight pants?
- 28:41So for all those people that have to dress up to sit at the...
- 28:45I'm sorry.
- 28:45I'm sorry.
- 28:46Yeah.
- 28:47I just want to be comfy.
- 28:48Me too.
- 28:48And enjoy my meal.
- 28:49Exactly.
- 28:50So yeah.
- 28:51Well, that's a good tip, actually.
- 28:53And so if you're a dress up family at Christmas, all the best, to ya.
- 28:59If you're like Jennifer and me, just whatever and just enjoy.
- 29:03Yeah.
- 29:04Yeah.
- 29:04Do you have a tip?
- 29:05A Christmas tip?
- 29:05Do I have a tip?
- 29:07I think I've given away a few tips and opinions here.
- 29:11I don't really feel qualified to have a tip.
- 29:13All right.
- 29:14Well, easy did I, but I threw it out there.
- 29:16No, that was a good tip, though.
- 29:17That was a good tip.
- 29:18My tip would be, I don't know what my tip would be.
- 29:20My tip would be, I don't know, just like, I don't know, just don't go to the mall.
- 29:26Don't go to the mall.
- 29:28That is a good tip.
- 29:28And listen, don't go to the mall on Boxing Day.
- 29:32That's like, you may as well just go.
- 29:34It's like, you know what that reminds me of?
- 29:36The running of the bulls in Spain.
- 29:38But the deal, do you agree, okay, let's get on this topic for a quick second, that the deals just aren't what they used to be anyway.
- 29:45So there's no need to go.
- 29:46And it's like month long.
- 29:48When I was a teenager, yeah, that's right, Boxing Day has turned into Boxing 6 months.
- 29:52But anyway, when I was a teenager, I would get up at 5 a.m.
- 29:55and go stand in line at A&B Sound to get my cassette tape player for like $19.
- 30:02They don't have nothing like that anymore.
- 30:04No, I agree.
- 30:05So I'm not getting up.
- 30:06Me either.
- 30:06And I'm not going to the mall.
- 30:08Like I say, it's like Spain, the running of the bulls.
- 30:09You're going to get trampled.
- 30:11Somebody's going to run over you.
- 30:12And again, it's a month long sale.
- 30:13There's no need people.
- 30:14No, exactly.
- 30:15And thank God for Amazon and the Boxing Day sales on Amazon.
- 30:18But anyway, all right.
- 30:19Well, Jennifer, that's it.
- 30:20That's our time.
- 30:21Wow.
- 30:22What a year.
- 30:23What a year.
- 30:23What a year.
- 30:24Stay tuned because we are going to do a podcast A Year In Review.
- 30:27We are, and I'm excited for our A Year In Review.
- 30:30I want to say thank you to all our listeners.
- 30:31Yes.
- 30:33You've been fantastic.
- 30:34You have.
- 30:34Our numbers have grown.
- 30:36It's been a little humbling.
- 30:39It's like when we started, we thought maybe our families.
- 30:43But then we thought they get bored after like three episodes.
- 30:48And so we've really tried to do our best to bring you people and guests that you find interesting and maybe encouraging, that kind of stuff.
- 30:57And I want to say thank you to our guests.
- 30:59Yes.
- 31:00And we'll talk more about that in our year end review.
- 31:01We will, but just something.
- 31:03No one has said no to us, Cam.
- 31:05Nobody.
- 31:05No one.
- 31:06Nobody.
- 31:07So thank you.
- 31:08Yeah.
- 31:08Well, actually one person.
- 31:09I won't mention that one, but I know why.
- 31:12And they have a very good reason.
- 31:13Okay, it's a valid reason, yes.
- 31:14It's a scary thing to tell.
- 31:16Anyways, but nobody has.
- 31:18No.
- 31:19And we've got great guests coming in the new year.
- 31:22I am excited for 2025.
- 31:24It's going to be fantastic.
- 31:25So like we say, the ABA Coffee In The Park, the story behind the story, that's what we've tried to bring you.
- 31:33That's right.
- 31:33So hey, listen, everybody, before we say Merry Christmas, make sure you tell everybody about our podcast.
- 31:40Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your enemies.

- 31:53Absolutely, 100%.
- 31:54Yeah.
- 31:54Yes.
- 31:55And we don't want to let you down.
- 31:56We're going to keep doing them.
- 31:57We are.
- 31:57And hopefully we keep growing.
- 31:59And if you have any suggestions of guests or people you think should be on it, hey, just drop us an email.
- 32:06You can get our podcast wherever you get your podcast or at www.Achesonbusiness.com.
