Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We have more breaking news. This is on a second topic.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Amas just responded to the proposed peace plan that the
- 0:07Speaker 2: President and Israeli Prime minister put forward earlier this week.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Some of the terms, including the release of all of
- 0:12Speaker 2: the hostages, have been agreed to. Let's bring in Face
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Nation moderator and Chief forign Afairs correspondent Margaret Brennan
- 0:17Speaker 2: to help us here.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Margaret, what do we know and have they accepted some.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Part or all of what the what President Trump and
- 0:26Speaker 2: Prime Minister net Yaioa have cooked up?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Well, John, what I know after making calls to Katari
- 0:32Speaker 3: and senior US officials, is that this response is being
- 0:35Speaker 3: viewed as very positive. Now, US officials also know they
- 0:40Speaker 3: need to proceed with some caution in hammering out some
- 0:43Speaker 3: details that were frankly left out of that twenty point
- 0:46Speaker 3: plan that the White House published earlier in the week.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Those talks could begin as soon as next week to
- 0:52Speaker 3: try to work out some of these details. But the
- 0:55Speaker 3: White House is viewing this as positive enough that, in fact,
- 0:58Speaker 3: the White House spokesperson just tweeted out a photo of
- 1:01Speaker 3: the President of the United States recording a response to
- 1:05Speaker 3: Hamas's acceptance. The White House also published the written response
- 1:08Speaker 3: that Hamas has released. Now I do have that statement
- 1:12Speaker 3: in front of me, and among the things that Hamas
- 1:14Speaker 3: said they would do is to hand over the administration
- 1:18Speaker 3: of Gaza to a Palestinian body of independence based on
- 1:23Speaker 3: the support of Arab and Islamic parties. The White House
- 1:26Speaker 3: plan is for President Trump to actually run the Board
- 1:30Speaker 3: of Peace and do so to help oversee this plan.
- 1:35Speaker 3: We know that the statement from Hamas does leave a
- 1:38Speaker 3: little bit of wiggle room, particularly on the specifics of
- 1:41Speaker 3: how they would decommission weapons, but this really stipulates for
- 1:45Speaker 3: those families who have been waiting for the past two
- 1:48Speaker 3: years for the return of their loved ones, this may
- 1:50Speaker 3: give them a real sign of hope. And perhaps the
- 1:53Speaker 3: first test we could see of whether this is a
- 1:55Speaker 3: full acceptance would be if we do indeed see the
- 1:59Speaker 3: handover of the hostages within the next seventy two hours.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I reference that specific timeframe because that is a point
- 2:06Speaker 3: in this plan that within seventy two hours of Israel
- 2:09Speaker 3: publicly accepting the agreement, all hostages would be returned. We
- 2:13Speaker 3: have not yet heard from the Israeli Prime Minister the
- 2:16Speaker 3: President of the United States making clear he views this
- 2:20Speaker 3: as an acceptance may in fact be boxing in the
- 2:23Speaker 3: Israeli Prime minister to accept this. But the long and
- 2:26Speaker 3: short of it, John, is that the details here, twenty
- 2:29Speaker 3: living hostages who are estimated to be still in Gaza
- 2:33Speaker 3: are expected to be handed over along with the remains
- 2:36Speaker 3: of those who passed away. These would be alongside Israel
- 2:40Speaker 3: having to release two hundred and fifty life sentenced prisoners
- 2:44Speaker 3: plus seventeen hundred gozens including women and children, that they
- 2:48Speaker 3: have been detaining. That's part of this plan. And really, John,
- 2:54Speaker 3: the moment and the timing here.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Is so key.
- 2:56Speaker 3: We are nearly to the day two years from that
- 3:00Speaker 3: attack that had Hamas and associated terror groups carry out
- 3:04Speaker 3: a surprise attack on Israel that killed twelve hundred people,
- 3:08Speaker 3: that took two hundred and fifty people hostage, and then
- 3:11Speaker 3: launched into a bloody war that has estimated to have
- 3:15Speaker 3: killed sixty five thousand people, triggered of famine due to
- 3:18Speaker 3: the blockade Israel had of the Strip, and really upended
- 3:21Speaker 3: the entire region and the politics there. So this is
- 3:25Speaker 3: really a significant announcement, particularly if it proceeds as laid
- 3:31Speaker 3: out here.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And Margaret, let me just catch up with you there,
- 3:34Speaker 2: so a couple of things. One, so it sounds like
- 3:36Speaker 2: you're saying Hamas is okay with the kind of new
- 3:40Speaker 2: governing organization. One of the conditions, as I recall from
- 3:43Speaker 2: this twenty point plan, is that Hamas would have no
- 3:46Speaker 2: role whatsoever in Gaza governance. And then there was that
- 3:52Speaker 2: other point, which is the key point about a demilitarization,
- 3:55Speaker 2: which is to say, giving up all of their weapons.
- 3:57Speaker 1: That's still an unknown at the moment. Is that right?
- 4:01Speaker 3: The specifics of the handing over of the weapons is
- 4:04Speaker 3: something that will be have to I mean, clearly it's complicated,
- 4:08Speaker 3: you have to carry that out, but that is short
- 4:10Speaker 3: of the complete and total destruction of Hamas. That, remember,
- 4:14Speaker 3: was the Israeli Prime Minister's position. Handing over weapons, decommissioning
- 4:19Speaker 3: and transferring power.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Is just short of that.
- 4:22Speaker 3: We know from the statement the White House released in
- 4:25Speaker 3: terms of their translation of the Hamas statement, it says
- 4:28Speaker 3: there and you put your finger on it, John, that
- 4:31Speaker 3: Hamas would be included in a comprehensive Palestinian national framework.
- 4:35Speaker 3: That's different language than what was in the White House proposals.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So again there are details here, and the doubles always
- 4:41Speaker 3: in those details. And those negotiations to try to work
- 4:44Speaker 3: out implementation could begin, I'm told as soon as next week,
- 4:49Speaker 3: but again we have not yet heard from the Israeli
- 4:52Speaker 3: Prime Minister.
- 4:53Speaker 1: One of the.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Things stipulated here is that as soon as Israel also
- 4:56Speaker 3: accepts here that it would have the war immediately end.
- 5:00Speaker 3: You know that there is an ongoing is really assault
- 5:02Speaker 3: of Gaza underway, so we have to really watch what's
- 5:05Speaker 3: happening on the ground.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Margaret Bennam with the important developments and the key caveats.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Thank you, Margaret for covering the territory there for us comprehensively.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Our coverage of both.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Of these stories will continue on CBS News twenty four
