- 0:04Sunday. And why so fast?
- 0:06What specific upgrades have been made to the Starship for this
- 0:10flight? Well, SpaceX has announced a
- 0:12potential launch date of October 13th for Starship's fifth test
- 0:16flight, pending regulatory approval.
- 0:20Now, this is earlier than the previously anticipated November
- 0:23launch window, and the delay up to now has primarily been due to
- 0:27licensing issues with the Federal Aviation Administration
- 0:30or the FAA, which required additional time for approvals.
- 0:34Initially, SpaceX had been aiming for a November launch
- 0:38date, largely because of regulatory hurdles, and these
- 0:41issues stemmed from what SpaceX claims are superfluous
- 0:45environmental analysis mandated by the FAA.
- 0:49Now despite these regulatory delays, SpaceX has continued its
- 0:52preparations to meet the new launch window.
- 0:56Now the primary goal of IFT 5 is not just to reach orbit, but to
- 1:00test new systems and maneuvers. And among these are the first
- 1:05ever attempt to return the Super Heavy booster to the launch site
- 1:09for a mid air catch using the launch tower's chopstick arms.
- 1:14Now this maneuver if successful would mark a significant huge
- 1:18milestone in developing the reusable Starship spaceflight
- 1:23technology. Now, another objective of this
- 1:26test flight involves the re entry and splashdown of Starship
- 1:30second stage. Spacex's plans for the Starship
- 1:33to execute a re entry, burn and then splashdown to the Indian
- 1:37Ocean. Improvements have been made to
- 1:39its thermal protection systems to increase the likelihood of a
- 1:43successful return, and SpaceX technicians have reworked
- 1:47Starship's heat shield extensively.
- 1:49In preparation for this flight. The team spent over 12,000 hours
- 1:54replacing the entire thermal protection system is selling
- 1:58newer generation heat tiles, a backup, a blade of layer and
- 2:03additional protections between the vehicles flap structures.
- 2:07Now, these upgrades are intended to address issues observed
- 2:11during previous flight tests, and alongside the heat shield
- 2:15updates, SpaceX has made enhancements to the spacecraft
- 2:19software and operational systems to refine its landing
- 2:22capabilities. These updates aim to better
- 2:25manage the re entry process and assure a softer splashdown,
- 2:28minimizing the risks of structural damage to the
- 2:31vehicle. Now, the infrastructure at
- 2:33Spacex's Starbase has also seen significant upgrades to support
- 2:37this mission. Enhancements to the launch and
- 2:39catch tower were made to facilitate the planned booster
- 2:43catch. This infrastructure is to decide
- 2:45to withstand the immense forces and complexities involved in
- 2:50catching the massive Super Heavy booster.
- 2:53Now, regulatory approval remains the largest hurdle for this
- 2:56launch. The FAA had previously estimated
- 2:59that the flight test wouldn't be cleared before late November
- 3:022024. SpaceX has publicly contested
- 3:05this timeline, arguing that it meets necessary environmental
- 3:09and operational criteria for an earlier launch.
- 3:13And in response to the FA as position, SpaceX published a
- 3:16detailed statement on its website titled Starships are
- 3:20Meant to Fly, arguing that the agency's delay is based on
- 3:23unnecessary environmental concerns.
- 3:26Now, the company also clarified that it has operated within the
- 3:29bounds of its permits and that the Environmental Protection
- 3:31Agency agreed with its compliance on operational
- 3:35requirements. Spacex's ambitions for Starship
- 3:38extend beyond Earth orbit, of course, as the vehicle is also
- 3:42central to NASA's Artemis 3 mission, which aims to return
- 3:45astronauts to the lunar surface by 2026.
- 3:48And to meet NASA's strict standards, Starship must undergo
- 3:52numerous test flights, including uncrewed missions to the surface
- 3:57of the moon. Now, the last Starship flight in
- 4:00June was considered a success as it accomplished its launch
- 4:05objectives, including the soft landing of both the Starship and
- 4:09its Super Heavy booster at sea. And the upcoming test is
- 4:12expected to build upon this by attempting more complex
- 4:16maneuvers and demonstrating advanced capabilities.
- 4:19Now, in preparation for the October 13th target, SpaceX has
- 4:23been conducting various checks and procedures at the launch
- 4:26site, includes stacking the Starship on its Super Heavy
- 4:29booster, performing propellant load tests, and verifying system
- 4:33functionality to ensure that the vehicle is ready for their
- 4:37goals. Now SpaceX approach to catching
- 4:39a Super Heavy booster involves a highly automated sequence of
- 4:43checks. Thousands of distinct criteria
- 4:46must be met for the tower catch attempt, including real time
- 4:50evaluations of the boosters condition, the tower systems,
- 4:53and manual authorization from the missions flight director.
- 4:57And if conditions do not allow for a safe catch or the Super
- 5:00Heavy booster, SpaceX has planned a contingency.
- 5:04The booster will attempt a controlled splashdown in the
- 5:07Gulf of Mexico after executing a landing burn.
- 5:10Now, this fall back plan ensures that no compromises are made
- 5:14regarding safety. Now, the second stage of the
- 5:17Starship has also undergone significant upgrades to mitigate
- 5:21the issues it faced in previous flights.
- 5:23Enhancements to the heat shield include improved tiles, extra
- 5:26layer of heat resistant material, and additional
- 5:29protections around the flap structures, which had previously
- 5:31been a weak point during re entry.
- 5:35Elon Musk has previously indicated that these upgrades
- 5:37were crucial for preventing fires in vulnerable areas of the
- 5:41Starship. By reinforcing these heat
- 5:43Shields and improving the design around the flaps, SpaceX aims to
- 5:48achieve a stable and secure re entry for the second stage of

- 7:27window. However, if the test faces
- 7:30complications or fails to meet these objectives, SpaceX will
- 7:35likely attempt another round of uncrewed missions before
- 7:39committing to sending humans. Now, the alignment of Earth and
- 7:44Mars plays a crucial role in these plans.
- 7:48These planets periodically align in a way that creates optimal
- 7:52conditions for interplanetary missions, reducing the energy
- 7:56required for travel. And in this decade, the most
- 7:58favorable windows occur in late 2024, late 2026, and late 2028
- 8:04into early 2029. And missing these windows could
- 8:07significantly delay Spacex's Mars objectives by years,
- 8:12potentially aligning more closely with NASA's timeline for
- 8:16sending astronauts to Mars in the Twenty 30s.
- 8:20Now, Spacex's development of Starship, which is the
- 8:23spacecraft designed to carry these missions to Mars, is still
- 8:27in progress. It's a beta form right now, and
- 8:29although it's the most powerful rocket ever built, with a height
- 8:32of about 400 feet and generating £16.7 million of thrust, the
- 8:38company has yet to successfully land it on solid ground.
- 8:42In its latest mission, SpaceX managed to land Starship in the
- 8:46Indian Ocean, marking an important step but still falling
- 8:49short of its goal to make the spacecraft completely and fully
- 8:53reusable. Now, Musk has expressed
- 8:55frustration with the regulatory landscape that he believes has
- 8:59slowed down the progress on the Starship program.
- 9:02He pointed to increasing governmental bureaucracy and
- 9:05regulatory hurdles as key obstacles from the FAA.
- 9:10And according to Musk, the red tape surrounding SpaceX
- 9:12activities has significantly hindered their ability to move
- 9:16faster towards its Mars launch date.
- 9:19Now, SpaceX has also faced delays in other major projects,
- 9:23such as NASA's Artemis 3 mission, which aims to return
- 9:26humans to the moon. Originally scheduled for 2025,
- 9:30this mission has been postponed to 2026, in part due to the
- 9:34developmental delays of the Starship rocket, which is
- 9:38critical to the success of this whole mission.
- 9:40And these delays raise questions about the feasibility of Musk's
- 9:45timeline for Mars, especially when other high priority
- 9:48projects are also experiencing setbacks now.
- 9:51The ultimate objective of Musk's Mars project is to establish a
- 9:56self-sustaining city on the Red Planet within the next 20 years.

- 10:03planets, thereby increasing its chances of survival, and Musk
- 10:08argues that becoming a multiplanetary species would

- 10:19A SpaceX is Starship, which is designed to be fully reusable,
- 10:22consists of two stages, the Super Heavy booster and the

- 10:51over the next two decades. Now the Starship is also capable
- 10:55of carrying up to 150 metric tons of cargo.
- 10:59This capacity will be essential for transporting the materials
- 11:03and the equipment needed to build a self-sustaining
- 11:06settlement on Mars now. If successful, it would make
- 11:09large scale interplanetary missions more feasible and cost
- 11:13effective than ever before. And Elon Musk has frequently
- 11:17revised Spacex's timeline for Mars mission, initially setting
- 11:21targets that now appear increasingly difficult to meet.
- 11:24About four years ago, he confidently stated that SpaceX
- 11:27would be sending ships to Mars by 2024.
- 11:30However, as technical and regulatory challenges persist,

- 12:49the Martian surface intact is a significant hurdle that is yet
- 12:53to be consistently overcome even by NASA.
- 12:56Now, Spacex's ability to refine their techniques in the coming
- 13:00uncrewed missions will be critical to the success of
- 13:04future crude journeys. And Musk's vision of a
- 13:09self-sustaining city on Mars touches on, well, philosophical
- 13:14and existential themes, including the long term survival
- 13:17of humanity. Musk believes that expanding
- 13:20human presence to other planets, it's not just a scientific
- 13:24endeavor, but a necessary step for the continuation of human
- 13:28consciousness in the face of existential risks on Earth.
