- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Jim, I regret to inform you, we've got some major drama,
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: major developments over on Backup Quarterback Island.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: What in the hell is going on?
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: This is a normal pod, but I kind of want to call it an emergency pod,
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: giving our attention to Backup Quarterbacks here on Real Football.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: This is it. These are the days we look for.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: You're always prepared as a backup quarterback, and this is why.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Drew Locke called a duty.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Brissette getting called to save a season.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Now, just think about that for a second, and then we'll get into it.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: But we always joke about quarterback survivor, quarterback backup island,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: how they're all pretty much the same at the end of the day.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: You're not going to win.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You need them to go 500 in however many games they're going to play.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: That's the reality of it.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Your season isn't going to be what you thought. It's done.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: You're grasping.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: But that being said, for this week, I always say this with backup quarterbacks.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: The more they play, they just disintegrate.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And it's like this first week, I promise you, Drew Locke, Brissette,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: whenever he gets it, they're going to ball out.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I really do believe that.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I think backups come in blazing and then they're going to disintegrate.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And it turns into Tanner McKee, fourth quarter, and it's wild. And it's awful.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And then the reality hits.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But for Seattle, two different scenarios right now.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Seattle's obviously getting through whatever they have to get through until Darnold gets back.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And they have one of the – I mean, Locke is an ideal number two.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: He's on the upper tier of backups for sure.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: He's got the attitude.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: You know how in backups, you want that cocky, I should be the starter,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: even though – You're not even close.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But you still want that in your backup to have that mindset that, no, I should be.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I think I'm better than Darnold.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: That's Drew Locke. I promise you he thinks he should be the starter,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: and that's what you want coming into this to take over.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Brissette, he's one of our favorites.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We've talked about him forever.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: He has always been a fringe starter, ideal backup.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Somehow gets contracts, and then now he's getting asked to be the savior in an AFC
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: that is loaded with generational quarterback talent.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So I don't see that being a needle mover much.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's a wild day of, I think, grossness for Seattle.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: I think they're okay.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Part of Seattle wants Drew Locke to be the starter regardless, right? You think?
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't I wouldn't.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think you win a Super Bowl like Sam Darnold.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: He has earned the right to keep that job as long as he is in that position
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: and doesn't totally fall apart.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: But I'm sure there's like maybe 18.5% of the Seahawks
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: that are like, yeah, let's just see what we got here.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Granted, it wasn't all Darnold's fault.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, he was under siege against Chicago on Monday Night Football.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: But it hasn't been necessarily pretty for Darnold.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And in Drew Locke, you got somebody that can rap put on by a Jeezy on the sideline.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's what you're talking about in that bravado of a backup quarterback.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: You want your quarterback just chilling on the bench, you know, working hard.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Working the hand movements, working the cameras, hitting every lyric to Jeezy.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: No right or wrong way you prepare yourself.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Just be cocky, however your cockiness is.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: If you have to lip sync Jeezy, do it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: You don't want to be like Scott Tolzien.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: He was like the opposite. I remember him as a backup in Green Bay.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: He would not be rapping, young Jeezy.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: I always compare this when here's when a backup gets thrown in and we call it
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: the wide-eyed deer and headlights, all the stuff that we talk about.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: That was what I think about when the Bills put Nathan Peterman in, who I was part of drafting.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: That's the example. Yes.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: That's when things go crazy wrong.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Because Peterman, at the end of the day, he wasn't ready to be anything.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: He was drafted to be at best.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: We were part of draft.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: We drafted him.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: We thought he'd be at best of two, but that was...
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was a number three, take him into whatever, fifth round, sixth round,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: wherever we took him. Played probably longer.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Blissful ignorance is the term, right?
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: You need blissful ignorance, just fearlessness.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: There it is. There it is.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: So when you see your backup have that look that Peterman had
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: or you see any backup may have, it's like, man, then you know it's over.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: You don't even have to.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: You almost should just take him out if you see that look with the eyes because it's done.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Because you know the pressure's coming.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: These coordinators, especially the veteran coaches,
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: they cannot wait to feast on not just a backup quarterback,
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: a young backup quarterback.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: So you do need some shit to you if you're a backup thrown in there.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Jacoby Brissett, Drew Locke.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: It doesn't get much better in that division.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: And then also Gardner Minshew.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: What were his numbers when he came in?
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Tyler, I'm not going to lie.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: 17 to 23, 188, 8.2 yards per pass attempt,
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: three touchdowns, zero picks, 137.3 rating.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: And he's basically a Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Every time he's thrown into a game on the fly, he's a Hall of Famer.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you right now, my theory, he fits the whole, what we're talking about.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Toss them up, pick one.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: They're all the same.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Minshew is the, these are the upper tier.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Like you could honestly, every week, Brissette, Minshew, Locke,
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: they could switch cities and jerseys.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And you would get to see, you know what I'm saying?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: They're used to preparing in one week, new team, just ship me off, put the jersey on, I'll play.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: They're all the same.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: They're wired so differently.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I seriously think that I just love backup quarterbacks.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: We talk about it all the time because it's just that fine line between being the guy you want.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing worse than when you don't feel good about your number two.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: I was fortunate with the Saints, working for the Saints and Coach Payton,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: that The backups were always legit, legit backups.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Chase Daniel, Mark Brunel, Andy Reid, same way.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: They take a lot of pride.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I know the time that was spent in our draft meetings and free agency
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: and roster building and how they talked about the backups, and it's so important.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And there's the most defeating feeling in personnel, though,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Is when you're sitting there trying to find out, trying to find a better number two.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: And you're looking at guys and you're like, oh man.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: That's when you realize they're all the same.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And how do you hit on the, like, how do you get the James Winston, the Mariotas?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: There are some really good ones right now.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: There's always those, I think you and I talked about before,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: all the first rounders that just weren't supposed to be first rounders.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Doesn't mean, I say it all the time, doesn't mean they aren't good players.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Some teams, they just drafted too high.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: We say it with Keon Coleman all the time.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Jump ball receiver, should have drafted him later. That's all.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: The guy, he can play in the NFL.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Just you took him too high for what you're going to – but the results.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: But the backup, same deal.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: A lot of these guys, Mariota, Winston, they're drafted too high.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Brissette was like a third-round pick.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: He was. I mean, you talked about he fit that Bill Parcells formula.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was at his pro day. He started a ton of games.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: You're at his pro day.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I feel like these backup quarterbacks, it just cracks me up because Jacoby Bursette,
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: he wasn't good enough to play quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals anymore, right?
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: He is a third stringer, demoted to the third string of a poverty franchise.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: But here's the Baltimore Ravens with Ozzie Newsome and Super Bowl trophies in the case.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I was just down there in Owen Mills, Maryland, and it's this palace of facility.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: They need you to save your season.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Like one man's trash truly is another man's treasure when it comes to backup quarterbacks.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Think about how things have changed that quickly that you were just in Baltimore.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Everything was on the up. Lamar's coming back. Right. You were there.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Lamar's coming back. Here he comes.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Here he comes. What is it?
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Two weeks later?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And we're talking about Jacoby. There it is, Tyler.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: When you were in Baltimore, could you have said – if somebody would have told you
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: in a couple weeks Jacoby Brissett will be starting for the Ravens,
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: would you – how would you have like – How would that have happened?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: It's just not possible.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: That's the NFL.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I'd say, man, I should have bought this hotel on my points, right?
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Not the credit card. No, no, it was worth the trip.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: I mainly went down there, okay.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: For the game of the year, Baltimore, Buffalo.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Right, that too.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: So great conversation with Justice Hill.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: The wisdom of Justice Hill, that story, is at golongtd.com if you want to check it out.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: It really has more to do about life than football.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: You know, when he tore his Achilles in 21, I mean,
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: he kind of gives the backstory on John Harbaugh
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: before the final preseason game tells him he's going to get cut.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: They don't have room for him.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And then boom, the first drive, J.K. Dobbins tears his ACL.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: John Harbaugh goes back to Justice Hill and says, this is going to be your year, man.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: We need you.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And Justice is thinking, oh, you basically told me how you feel. You don't like me.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: He had a bad relationship with Greg Roman, who you're familiar with.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Greg Roman told him flat out he wanted to sign a veteran and couldn't make it happen.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: And he kind of describes himself as one person before this Achilles
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: and another person after, you know, Got off of social media for two full years.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Started reading books nonstop.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: And you can go on his Instagram now. It's active.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: He doesn't use it much.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: But he puts like inspirational quotes up.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: So that was the impetus for the story is he kind of guides you through those quotes
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: and his philosophy on life and how he changed as a human being.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Anyways, really interesting guy.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: I love working on that story.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Another reason I was down there is what you just hit on.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: To follow a team banging on that Super Bowl door.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: They haven't been able to crash the party with Lamar Jackson, now with Derrick Henry.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: I wanted to follow these guys, right?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: They're in training camp.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: They're a month into the season, going to cover Bills, Ravens, maybe go back.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And the trials and tribulations of a first-year head coach in Baltimore,
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: similar to Buffalo, who walks into these Super Bowl or bust expectations,
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: and then in a blink of an eye, their season basically goes up in smoke.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Lamar Jackson bangs his hand.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Snoop Huntley gets hurt.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: They're both done for the year.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: If they declared Lamar Dunne for the year, they have Huntley pretty much.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: I guess if they're still alive and think it's Super Bowl in late December, there's a chance.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: But we're going to get to that Lamar Jackson conversation.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: That's the cruelty of the NFL.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: You've lived it, Jim, as a scout, Eagles, Saints, director personnel for the Bills.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: One moment, things can feel...
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Hopeful, boundless optimism.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: You're fist pumping your bosses.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: You're throwing drinks back with the owner.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: You're thinking championship.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: And then the next moment, it can all evaporate in thin air.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And that's what happened at Highmark Stadium for the Baltimore Ravens.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like it was a year ago because that's life now, the game.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: It was only a couple days ago as we're talking on this podcast.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: But Like the buildup, I don't know about you, but that was, man,
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I was ready to sit and watch the show.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Like it was, I couldn't wait. Couldn't wait.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Little kid in me was all ready to go.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Man, buzz kill.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Literally, I turned, I text you.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: I said, enjoy, I'm out.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: That's right. Right before the game.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Substack live on the field after the game and you're in.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: And then the injuries happen.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I think I sent it to you after Huntley. Then I'm out. Then I'm out.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Because now the game doesn't count.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Go ahead and beat up the third stranger.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: We're good.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: That's incredible, though.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: It happened so fast.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: So fast.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting in the press box
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: and working the chat with our subscribers and threads
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: and this and that. I look up.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what?
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Of course, you look at yourself like, oh, what an idiot.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I miss that Lamar Jackson's an inactive.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: How did I miss that in the pregame meal and talking to people in the press box?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: And then I'm like, oh, no, Lamar Jackson started for a play, and he's already out.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was bizarre.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Bizarre.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Is their season done?
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I'm good. Yep.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: If they had a defense, Tyler, they don't have a defense.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: It's not like their defense is like it used to be.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: I would say, yeah, maybe you have a shot with a defense, but no defense,
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: third stringer, percent, whatever.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: For me, it's a wrap.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: You?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: It's a wrap.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm rooting for these backup quarterbacks. And you never know. You never know.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Driving down to Cincinnati a few years ago when Jake Browning gave them a little surge.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden Jake Browning the next season
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: or whatever it was two years later throwing picks like crazy and gets let go.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: I think Jake Browning is possibly going to be in the UFL for us this year.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know that for sure, but that's how life takes a turn for backups though.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Browning was, remember he was very critical of all the teams that traded or cut him
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: and a lot of chest pumping on the sidelines of those games.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: A year or two later, you are UFL worthy.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Screaming to the camera that the Vikings never should have cut him.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Although maybe the Vikings could use him.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: We'll get to those Vikings.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Because we do have to get to those guys.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: On the Ravens though. Yeah. Stick with the Superbowl right?
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: That was your Super Bowl pick.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: That I did, yeah.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: No, and it was a good pick.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: But that is why all I was going to say to that was that is why I know you hate it.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: That's why you shouldn't gamble, though.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: A lot of people put a lot of money on future bets before the season.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Hey, I like the Ravens to win the Super Bowl. Be careful.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: One injury away from that bet ticket being ripped up.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: In this game specifically, too, I don't know,
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: and I love what Declan Doyle's done as OC to just not hand the ball
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: to Derrick Henry. They just didn't run the ball, really tried to.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: And Huntley goes down.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Then your third stringer's hobbling around.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Justice Hill would have been their next quarterback in, by the way.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's right. I heard that guy.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I don't know.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: It's too bad because I do feel like the defense isn't that good.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Zay Flowers had a bad game.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Derek Henry's getting old.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: But the quarterback changes everything, Jim.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: If Lamar Jackson is playing quarterback, if he's the tip of the spear...
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: It makes your running game better.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: It makes Zay Flowers better.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: It makes the offensive line better.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: It makes your defense better.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Like you can start playing off of each other as units.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Look at the Chicago Bears and how terrible they were at Lambeau Field.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: It was 31-7.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: It could have been 51-7, whatever.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: It was awful.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And now they're a Super Bowl contender and a snap of a finger
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: with Caleb Williams back on the field.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: So you've got to – a lot of it's dumb luck, right?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Because the argument that Lamar Jackson is a mobile quarterback,
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: how can you pay a mobile quarterback?
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: His injuries are in the pocket.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: He's just banging his hand.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: His past injuries aren't really the result of running around.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: So it just goes to show the NFL,
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: you can plan for seven months like the Ravens did with Jesse Minner.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: And think Super Bowl and piece this thing all together.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Lamar Jackson, one of, if not the most efficient quarterback in whatever it was,
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: three games in this offense, three and a half games.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: It looked unstoppable.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Boom. It's over.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm thinking Lamar, Henry, Zay Flowers, that combo, you know, quarterback,
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: running back, receiver combo, that three, I don't know if you beat that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah. Like just those three.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: So where do they go from here with Lamar Jackson?
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: He's got a year left on his contract.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: I'll offer my take, and then we'll give the floor to our resident front office expert.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: There's two sides to this.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: And remember, he doesn't have an agent, which makes it complicated.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Because if you're the Ravens, you're talking directly to Lamar Jackson and Lamar Jackson's mom.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Right? There isn't that bump.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if you're trying to state your case and gain leverage
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: and point out all these injuries and things that have gone wrong,
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: there's a personal element here. They just lived it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: They went through all of this.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So that makes it difficult.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: But if I'm the Ravens, I don't know.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I think I'm still doing everything in my power to keep Lamar Jackson.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Everything.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Even with the injuries.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Everything.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: The unknown.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: The age. All of it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: You do not want...
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Want to enter the abyss.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: You do not want to be tapping into backup quarterback island and the draft,
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: which is the crap shoot.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Even if it's 60 mil a year and you don't know if you're going to get a full season
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: at any point, you do it.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: If you're the Ravens, correct?
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Everything you can to keep them.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Okay. Here's how I see it going.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Same page. Everything you can.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Here's how I see it going, though. I think we agree.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Got to keep them.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: But what I think they will do, Lamar obviously will have a number in mind.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: I'm assuming it's going to be break the bank number, whatever Lamar's number will be.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Okay. The Ravens number will not be that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Okay. They will do their work.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Like you just said, they'll have all the breakdowns of percentages of games played.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: What we had in those games, what we had, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Here's the number.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: We're still going to make you the highest paid player, however they'll do it.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: It'll look right to the Ravens.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: It won't be to Lamar because whatever number he sets, there is a team that will do it for him.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Promise you, and he knows it.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So he has set this up.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure he has set this up with the no trade clause
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: and no tag clause, if I'm correct.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: If that is the case,
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: he should be sitting kind of pretty as far as if I'm Lamar,
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: you set your number and let the teams come to you if that's how it's going to go.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Lamar Jackson possesses a full no trade clause
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: and a no franchise clause in his contract, right?
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: So he would need to green light any trade.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: He's going to have a number.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: It's going to be extremely high.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: It's going to be highest paid. It's going to be highest paid.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Because he really should do that.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, make it whatever number you want.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: A team will pay it.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Miami, wink, wink.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Minnesota?
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Minnesota. They need to be.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: We'll talk about them later. They shouldn't be allowed.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Miami, though.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: That's his hometown. But that's a natural.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: That's kind of a natural.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's a natural.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: I think we all think Lamar goes to Miami at some point.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: My point of that is a team like that could meet his number.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I'm just catching up on a few things here.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: There's a lot happening.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, Ian Rappaport, he believes, quote,
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: very strongly that Lamar Jackson wants to meet Baltimore long term.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: So the posturing has already begun here for these two sides.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So this isn't.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Just going to be resolved overnight.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: We're sitting here first week in November.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, look, if Jeffrey Simmons is worth two first round picks
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: and you're Baltimore, you're not going to budge from your number.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: You want something back.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: And you're willing to trade Lamar Jackson, which for my money, still crazy.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I think he just Pay him whatever the number is, even if it's astronomical.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: You don't want to enter no man's land.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: It would be crazy to go a different direction.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: In my opinion, because we both know what that world can look like.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Anyways, what is that price that they could entertain?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: That's so, I guess to your point, Simmons got two firsts.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Whatever you can package, you're going to do it.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Some team will do it, I think.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Getting Lamar at 31, 32 years old, you should get him for three.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: That gives you, to me, you'd probably have a three-year window to get
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: to the Super Bowl with Lamar at that age, before it's going to go the other way.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Doesn't he have the best passer rating in NFL history, too?
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I just think his game is so...
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Dependent on his movement. It is.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: He's not beat up like Cam got beat up.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Cam got seriously beat down.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: He has, like you said, some different injuries that are just like the one
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: the other day, but I don't feel like he gets hit.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: He never looks a step slower than he looks at Louisville.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: He looks the same.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: He always just looks faster than everybody else, quicker than everybody else, so.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: However many years you get them, that's your window, three, four-year window at 31,
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: 32 years old and make your run.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: I think teams will go all in.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: It's not an ACL.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It's not an Achilles.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: It's not the sort of lower body injury where if you're Baltimore, you're concerned.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: 100%. What is it even going to look like when Lamar Jackson is back?
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Hell, do we even try to imagine what the number is that he'll be asking for?
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Whatever, who's number one?
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: It switches so often, I can't keep track who's number one right now, quarterbacks.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: But whoever number one is, it'll go over that.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 65, 70 a year.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: He'll get that, and then Josh Allen will go above that right away.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: He'll have to do that in Buffalo.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: So that'll reset all that.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I think he gets it.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So we're in agreement. Lamar Jackson stays in Baltimore.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Eric DaCosta is really tied to him, too.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: We're burying the lead.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Eric DaCosta is going to want to keep his job.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: He doesn't want to start over, rebuild.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: If Steve Bishotti thinks, I need a new GM, though,
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: if this thing completely falls apart with Jacoby Brissett,
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: say they don't win another game.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: They win one more game.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: He cleans house.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Or at least fires the GM.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: You don't know with these owners, is what I'm saying.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: You don't know.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: True.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: But I think DaCosta stays.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Baltimore isn't a franchise that wants to have all this turnover
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: and I think they want to keep this GM and this new coach together.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: And I think they get to Lamar's number.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Now, I think the theme for this episode really is you disappointed me.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: You never wanted to hear that from your dad, right?
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Not I'm pissed.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I'm disappointed.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And so the Ravens, they've really disappointed me this season, Jim, as my Super Bowl pick.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Who's disappointed you?
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Denver's offense would just be something I'm confused on.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: It just can't get right for some reason.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I thought this thing was wild.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: I thought it was just going to look electric. It's the other way around.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: They're winning games with their defense, which we knew.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: They were my Super Bowl pick.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: That's why I was talking about them.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: But I picked them because I thought their offense was going to take
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: that next step combined with their defense.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Wrong. So I'm disappointed in that offense.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: That's AFC.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Dallas.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Dallas. We both were high on Dallas.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about it. It's embarrassing.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: I picked that. I know. And they still can win the division.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: What are you disappointed the most with Dallas?
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: It's the same shit every year with Jerry and Steven Jones. All
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: right, so let me pull this up.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: This is from on the Dallas Cowboys and organizational rot we had in January 25
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: when I talked to some people in that front office.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: I'm just going to recite a few of these quotes from somebody who watched the dynamic up close.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Quote, it is almost like football is an afterthought.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Jerry and Steven are all about the money and monetizing every aspect of the Cowboys
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: and That gets frustrating.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: That gets distracting to get your job done.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: I would always say it's hard enough to win in the NFL as it is with all things being equal.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: You've got 31 other teams who are really competitive and they're good and they're talented.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Now you're going to load this one team up with all these distractions they've got to deal with.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: It's not putting them in the best position to be successful.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: And it's ego.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day, all these owners, GMs, coaches,
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: you've got to have ego if you're going to survive and thrive in the NFL.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: But the ego...
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: The Joneses is to a different level
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: because they refuse to bring in a smart,
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: football-minded person, whether you want to call that person a president,
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: a general manager, or a head coach, somebody with the power, with the say,
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: making the final decisions.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: They just can't have that.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: And it's been that way since Jimmy Johnson in the early 90s when they clashed.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: And they never really made amends.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, they kind of did for the cameras when Jerry finally put Jimmy up.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: It was fake.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: It was absolutely fake.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Peter King, our buddy, does a great job in the game kind of detailing that relationship.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: It stayed bad for a number of years
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: because of ego, because Jerry Jones needs the credit.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, this goes back to Bill Parcells.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, he told this to people underneath him that he could not live
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: With Bill Parcells having control and succeeding,
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: he would rather himself have control and lose than somebody else.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: So that's still the issue there.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: And that's why they go on the cheap.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they paid Dak.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: They paid C.D. Lamb.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: They always pay these guys at the wrong time.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Wrong times.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: They're never ahead of the curve.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: They're never...
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Finagling, manipulating contracts in a way that allows you to then be active in free agency.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: They'd rather bargain bin shop later.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: They never go for it when they should go for it.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: They're always two years late.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: The time to go for it is when you're 12-5 with Mike McCarthy three years in a row
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: and you couldn't get ahead of the DAT contract.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: They bottom feed, but they don't pay for that coach.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, you took...
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Mike McCarthy is what I wanted to tell you.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: They had a coach.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: I like Mike McCarthy.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: I'm a believer in coaches.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Everybody has flaws.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: But certain coaches, wherever they travel, you see the results.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: It's that simple.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And wherever McCarthy goes, you see it.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: But it's a madhouse there for McCarthy.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: I'm sure his stories have to be incredible.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: What he would probably say, how crazy it must be in Dallas, having to deal with him.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: So I don't know if anything ever changes until that actually gets changed.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: It's funny you say that.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: So I'm just looking at this story.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: I forget about these anecdotes that you pick up from sources.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what it was.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: And granted, Mike McCarthy, he knew what he was getting into.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Even then, you're a little naive to how bad it really is at the start.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: You're still the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: You're going to take the job.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: And you think that you can maybe make it work.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: That's where your ego comes into play. You're the one that can fix this.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: You're the one that can make the relationship work.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: But during a football season,
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: coaches have 10 minutes to devour a lunch before getting to another meeting.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: And inside the cafeteria at the start, you're standing in line behind 12 people for your food.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: This is how one source explained it.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And half of those employees are working in the marketing department.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: There's stadium tours walking by.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: They're yucking it up while your head's spinning on the next week's opponent.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: And Mike McCarthy was growing, quote-unquote, fed up in Dallas, is what I was told,
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: with this infrastructure that they have there.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Again, and that's what I said.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't he know what he's getting into?
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: But you do think that you can make it work.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: And the problem for Dallas is, I guess it's twofold.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Jerry needs to be the one in control.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: And also Jerry doesn't want to pay a coach.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Brian Schottenheimer's, I don't know what his salary is.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: He's got to be the cheapest head coach in the NFL.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: One of.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: He should be.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: And then you look at the Chicago Bears, the McCaskies.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: And how cheap they've been over the years.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: They pay up.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: They blow Ben Johnson away with an offer that he can't refuse.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Empower him.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: He has the power there.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Not Ryan Poles, what I believe.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: No, Ryan Poles, they're figuring a way to make this work together.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: They just executed this deadline deal for Jeffrey Simmons.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: But Luther Burden, Colson
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Loveland, Ben Johnson's behind those picks.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: And it starts with The Bears as an organization looking themselves in the mirror,
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: all the dysfunction that we laid out in that three-parter and saying, it's bad here.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: We need somebody to come save us.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: And they roll out the red carpet to Ben Johnson.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: The Cowboys would never, Jerry Jones would never do
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: that to the next high-profile coaching candidate.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Ben Johnson was number one on the wish list two years in a row.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: They're not even going to think about it because they can't give up the power.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's Game of Thrones.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: It is Game of Thrones.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: That is real.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: No, I don't know how it changes.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: We've talked about it.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: I'm laughing. Mike Pettin is there now.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: They can't ever get defense right. They just switch.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: It's all just a mess all the time.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: All that being said, there's Dak Prescott.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: All he does is show up, be professional, give you what he's got.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Probably one of the most statistically probably the best quarterback in Dallas Cowboy history.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: Nothing to show for it, and it's not going to happen this year either.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: It's funny we say that, though.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: They can win that division.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Six, seven wins might win it.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Watch them win the division, host a playoff game, and beat a team from the NFC North.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Coach of the year.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: So, no, and it wouldn't shock anybody.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: But it would because you just haven't seen anything
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: that says defensively they're any kind of threat.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: And the offense has not been what we thought.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think we all picked Dallas.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know I shouldn't say you, but I think we were excited about thinking,
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: how are you going to stop this offense?
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Thinking it would be more like Cincy, Buffalo type unstoppable stuff.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And it's not even close, like not even close.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're losing to Jalen Daniels, undrafted rookie at home.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Now you're losing to Gardner Minshew.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Shootouts. Defense.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: I went over Tanner McKee, sandwiched between those two.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: And it was a game, though.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: The Philly had chances.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: They did.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: But it goes to defense.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: The defense is a jumbled joke, ugly.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: You can't do anything.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Boy, Caleb Downs, he's just a rookie.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: Maybe...
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: He figures it out and he turns into this all pro.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Did you see him just get downfield?
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: That was an incredible play by the lineman.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: And then Trey McBride talking smack to him.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: First round.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: What first round?
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: Well, he always fits that.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I got to study him more.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Because he seemed like a guy everybody – I like to always study the people who are
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: the, you know, the Genties, the Baines, the guys that everybody's saying can't miss.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, they're not even close.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: I like getting out in front of that.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: And Downs was another guy everybody said was can't miss as a safety.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: My theory on drafting first round is very simple if you don't have a quarterback.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: It's pass rushers, playmakers.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Get one of those other. Don't take alignment.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Don't take safeties.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: Not going to do anything for you.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Playmakers, pass rushers.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, that's the value of a first round.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: That's how I'd look at it.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: To get the actual value of a first round, you better find one of those.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Everything else, they can just fall in the mix.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: He might be a good player, but the defense is embarrassingly bad.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So how much of an impact?
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: If he is good, that really shows you how that does not impact your defense.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: But I haven't studied him enough, but that play was ugly.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: Like, that was a monster on the move.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I mean let's pull up the numbers here to finish up the Dallas Cowboys defense
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: because it's ugly.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: The Arizona Cardinals, again, the Cardinals, Jacoby, Minshew, Tyler Algiers,
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: the starting running back, right?
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Jeremiah Lovey, I think it's his other ankle.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Now he's on IR.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: He's done.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: 467 total yards
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: to your 261 at home.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Ugly.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And Arizona misses the extra point at the end of regulation.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: How about...
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Here we go, defense. Sorry, I wanted to get these.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: You know, I love my points per play.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: They're 25th in points per play, which, man, Buffalo's 22nd.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: That's to give you an idea.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: That also goes to show you there are seven teams,
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: six teams, whatever it is,
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: seven teams worse than them statistically, which is amazing,
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: but Arizona being the worst.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: All right, let's put this into practice.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I just pulled up their schedule.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: You tell me win or loss.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: They're 3-5 right now at Indianapolis.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's this week.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I actually look at that as a trap.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: I hate that game for Dallas right now.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: You want to give them a loss?
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: I can't sit there and say it's a win.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: I think that Indy team is going to come out.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: There's too much pride at some point for the guys that are left,
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: and Dallas does not have a defense.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: You have to stop possibly the best running back in the NFL.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, I can't say a win there. I can't say that.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: All right, then we'll go Indy there.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Let's see how many wins we can say.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Hosting San Francisco.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Hell no. I can't say that.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Hosting the Titans.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Give them a win.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Say they beat the Titans or the Colts. One of them. They'll find a way.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: So give them a win there. Sure.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Hosting Philadelphia.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Yes. Two wins.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: All right. So they're up to two at Seattle.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: No.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: It's a Monday night Joe Buck, Troy Aikman special.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: Ooh. Salty Aikman.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Yes. Get over it.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: At the LA Rams.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: No. We're at two wins right now.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Hosting Jacksonville, that's a loss.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: You would think.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Hosting the Giants.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: Give them that one. Three wins.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: At Washington.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: You'd like to think, yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: I look at that as three wins.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Three or four wins.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: So what, they'll finish six, seven wins?
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Six and 11.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: You disappoint us, Dallas.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I was high on you, too.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: They're my division pick.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Let's move to a team
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: with a sparkling 6-1 record, the Minnesota Vikings.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Everything's fine, Jim.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Nothing to worry about.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Nothing to worry about.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Just give it some time offensively.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: They're working through the kinks.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Everything's fine.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: They do host the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Who wins this game? Why?
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Where's your level of concern with the Minnesota Vikings offense,
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: particularly quarterback Kyler Murray?
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: That's obviously the – and it's not all Murray because he does show the Murray.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Every game you see the Murray, the good, the talent, the arm talent.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: You see a throw or two every now and then.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: But 25th points per play offense isn't going to get it done.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: He has just always been to me.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I'm just not a Murray guy.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: We talked about, we did a big thing on him before the season, and it's just hard for me.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: I always said to me, I still looked at Minnesota as having the worst quarterback
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: in the division.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: So how can you be the best team in the division?
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: And here we are, I am being proven horribly wrong.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Like not even, they are winning every game.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: The defense is lights out.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: So that is how you, Obviously offset a, we'll just go average quarterback play.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: Not saying it's worse than that.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: He is also learning a new offense still, to your point.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So can it get better?
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: This Bills-Vikings game this week for me, the Bills are going to win the game.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: I do like the Bills this week.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Because I told you, I don't think you can do anything with this Bills offense.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's that historic.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: I think that is better than the Vikings defense.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: But I think we're going to find out.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: We're going to find out real quick is Minnesota,
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: if your offense can't do anything against Buffalo's defense,
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: you have serious concerns.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And if you're Buffalo's defense and you can't shut down Kyler Murray, now you need to stop.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: You need to really take a look.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah. So for both teams, I like this game so much.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: I love that it's a Monday nighter, big time game.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: I'm on record saying I thought the Bills would put up 30 on Flores.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: I just don't see anything you can do. I don't care what you do.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: I don't care what he comes up with.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: I don't see it.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: Well, they got gashed by Jameer Gibbs up the middle.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: And the Bills have James Cook.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: They can do that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: I know. I don't think there is – I keep saying it.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know how you can possibly slow this Bills offense down ever.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: It's that talented.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: The advanced metrics support your claim to our pal Shiel Kapadia.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: He's always all over EPA.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: And tracks it as well as everybody.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: I don't do EPA. You're not an EPA guy?
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: I'm not, but where are they on that?
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Because I know people love it.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Through eight games, this is the best Bills offense this century.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, so the stats I use. And they're currently the best offense in the NFL.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: That tracks them. Yep, that tracks.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: They can throw it. They can run it.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: I'm sure we have people listening and watching that.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: And this is an argument that you can make.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't care what the numbers tell me.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: My eyeballs tell me something's off.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: Because that first half against Baltimore...
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: They were a bunch of zombies.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: Games, I agree.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: I agree with you.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: Games can take on, you know, crazy.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: I don't like to put too much into that.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: I always like the bottom line and how did they produce?
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: What did they, you know, what did they do?
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: The Bengals are a mess every week and they're throwing for 500 yards.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: He looks better than Everborough. You know what I mean?
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: But they can't even beat the Titans.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know what to say. See what I'm saying?
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: But I'm sitting there telling you the Bengals. They did beat them. They held on.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: They did beat them. And that's what I'm saying.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: The Bills and Bengals, to me, like, please, let's just get that as our AFC championship.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Would that be great?
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Yes. Yes.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Please, please.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: And all this defense talk we're doing is for nothing.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: I'm big on defense, but you have to find a way to hit the quarterback to stop any
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: of these offenses. That's it.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: It's why I wrote about DJ Moore after the game.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: That's the evolution they needed.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: They needed somebody that can make a play down the field.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: It's premeditated.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: You know where you're going with the ball.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: You force that player the ball, and he makes a play like he made.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: That 49-yarder, it woke up the stadium.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: It woke up the team.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Just posterized Marlon Humphrey.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: And really, the way you rewatch it,
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: the way that DJ Moore kind of contorts his body in midair to make that catch,
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: and then he gets up like, are you not entertained?
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: That's the sort of play that Brandon Cooks couldn't make against Denver in the playoffs.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: A little underthrown, I'll give you that, but was it a catch?
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: Was it an interception?
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Leave no room for doubt. Make the catch.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Make the play. Make the play.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: What happened in the playoff game the season before that, Jim?
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Mack Hollins is your leading receiver at Arrowhead.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yes, you put up 29 points.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: The offense wasn't the problem. I get it.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: It's all about the defense and how awful they are this time of year,
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: and we'll get to that defense later.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: But Matt Collins is your leading receiver. That's not ideal.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: And then the year before that in 23, the divisional round against Kansas City,
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: you get Kansas City at home.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Allen chucks it deep, whatever it was, seven, eight minutes left in the game,
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: and Stephon Diggs lets it go through his hands.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: So you need a player who's clutch, DJ Moore, clutch last year for Chicago in big-time spots.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: You're talking about backup quarterbacks being cocky and have an attitude.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: You need that in your wide receiver, one.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: Everyone eats is cool.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: And it was great talking to Connor McGovern in the locker room.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And even he said, yeah, like you want your wide receiver one to have some stuff
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: to you, to, to know he's a wide receiver one, to want the ball.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: That's what they have in DJ more.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: Like he's, he's got that necessary cockiness.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Um, whatever, what did he play in 93 consecutive games
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: before his injury this year?
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: So they, The trainers, they were fighting behind the scenes.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: He wanted to play out West really, really bad.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: They had to almost just pry him away from the field so he wouldn't.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Whether it's personality, play style,
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: I think he's the one that does get me to that historic conversation
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: with the Bills offense because now it's not like you're trying to manufacture
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: a passing game.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: You can just push the easy button with DJ Moore in certain spots.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's been everything they needed.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Diggs was similar, but Josh and Moore seem to be a little more just comfortable.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: Best way to say it.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: And then Joshua Palmer catches the game-winning touchdown against Houston in Week 1
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: because of the attention towards Diggs.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: McGovern said they're seeing it in the run game.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: Some boxes are softening up.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: When number two is on the field, it's going to help Dalton Kincaid leak free down the field.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: So you just summed up the problem that I was just going to say, you just, you,
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: we didn't even talk about Josh Allen and cook,
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: possibly the best quarterback and best running back in the NFL.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: We're sitting there talking about DJ Moore and Kincaid because those guys are ballers too.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: And an offensive line is just gashing people.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: Inevitably, we always veer into Bills territory,
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: but if we were to go back to those Vikings, what do you do?
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: You're 6-1.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: Brian Flores and that defense, yes, they just were gashed by Gibbs,
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: but their pressure package is the best in the NFL.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: The defense is elite.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: You're trying to win a Super Bowl.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: The deadline is next week.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: A day after you play the Bills...
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: But I don't think there's really an option out there.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Daniel Jones isn't better than Kyler Murray.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Justin Herbert is the worst quarterback in football right now.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: It just has to work with Kyler Murray.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: Laugh about Herbert. Yeah, I'm with you on that.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: I don't think there's anything else you can do.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: And Minnesota shouldn't be allowed.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: There should be like a rule. No more.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: They have to figure this out at quarterback.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Enough.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Enough.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: Like McCarthy is sitting there.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: It's funny to think J.J. McCarthy is giving the Giants hope right now.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: I don't believe that yet.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: The more I look at how their offense is functioning.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: He's been there for two weeks.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Let's see it a little longer.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: My goodness, he's been there for two weeks.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: I agree with you again.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: But I don't know. Minnesota, I think this is what you have and keep working it.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: The key is do we feel like Murray is being professional in the building,
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: off the field, the stuff that you heard about in Arizona.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: His play is not showing – he doesn't look erratic.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: He's not like sloppy.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: He shows signs of they just have so much talent.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: I think the expectations are come on.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: We have too much ability to be struggling like this and be this poor.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: You know what's weird though, Jim?
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: I do see the erratic throws.
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: No, let me take that back.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: Erratic throws but not – He's not turnover crazy.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: I see.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah. You know what I'm saying? He's not turnover crazy, but he's never been a pure passer.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: That's why I don't.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: He's never been my style.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: The accuracy to hasn't been
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: a big time problem of his, right?
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Well, percentages are one thing.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: He can throw the football.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: No, he is fun to watch.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: He's a baseball pitcher, thrower of a football.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: It's pretty.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so like in 24 and 25, like when he was actually doing some more under center,
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: granted not as much as Kevin O'Connell wants to in Minnesota,
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: 24 was a full season with Drew Petsing and the Cardinals.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: He completed 68.8% of his passes, 68% last year.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: I know, numbers are numbers.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: No, but that's fair. That's, yeah.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: And watching some of those throws against the Lions, he had Jefferson for a touchdown.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: He dirted another one to Jefferson's feet.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: And you watch the replay and Jefferson just looks exasperated. He's unhappy.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: There's another one where Murray's kind of like doing a mini rollout left.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Jefferson's right on the sideline.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: He's open, air mails it.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's yips.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Something's off. I mean, Jefferson is pissed.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: This is a receiver who's always talking to the media after games.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: And boy, he got out of there per reporters
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: on the scene,
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: trying to help him help himself before he says something he regrets.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: But Murray's game's always been, and you're right,
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: I kind of misspoke with the erratic to me has always been his game in general.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: The running around, the whipping of the ball. That's true.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: That's what I meant.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like it's that crazy anymore, that part of his game.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: But to your point, he got credit. I forget what game it was.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: It was a beautiful, he did throw a beautiful kind of jump ball pass
- 49:33SPEAKER_00: to Justin Jefferson in the corner of the end zone.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Jefferson made eight.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: It was a big boy catch what he does.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: But everybody was like, oh, what a throw, what a throw.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that was all catch. Like he threw that. It was like double cover.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean? It was a nice little. He put some air on it.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: But you're not going to make a living that way is my point.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: And until Murray can show some type of volume completions,
- 49:55SPEAKER_00: I always talk like you got to do that to put drives together and really get defenses
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: on their heels, it's hard to make a living.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: This is your week to do it.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: The Bills have shown no signs of slowing down anybody.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: Even though they have four first-rounders basically on their D-line, the Bills.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: This is the week. C.J.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: Gardner-Johnson, he's out of there.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: You don't have that talented safety patrol in the middle of the field.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: I guess he's talented.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: I'm being sarcastic. I know.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean. He's not good. It doesn't matter.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Whatever the reason, I know they're kind of making it clear it was production.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: You can just tell us he spit on a player and you don't want You don't want that as well.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: It's the whole package with C.J.
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: Gardner-Johnson. I'll say this.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: I was talking to a coach for the Texans before the season who knows.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: I live in the Buffalo area.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: And he's like, yeah, have fun with that guy.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Have fun with him.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: We couldn't wait until he left town.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: I love when people say that. Yeah.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: And it's a fine line because I also watched a lot of Bears games as you did.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: He did make some plays for the Bears.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: He does.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: And party likes some attitude, abrasiveness in a violent game.
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: But he just is a habitual line stepper, right?
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: To quote the great Charlie Murphy.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: And you don't want the habitual line stepper.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: You just need an occasional line stepper.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: Also, what a TV show that'd be. C.J.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: Garner, Johnson, Cole Bishop.
- 51:28SPEAKER_01: I'd watch that old 70s, 80s sitcom.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: They could not be any more different in personality.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: So I guess you go back to Jamar Hamlin for now, but they have to trade for safety, right?
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: They invest so much.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: They've invested a lot on this defense, Tyler.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of capital to be this bad.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: There are very few teams that have what I consider four first-round picks
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: on that D-line because the best player on that D-line,
- 51:55SPEAKER_00: if you're drafting right now today, you're taking Walker in the first round.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: He's the best player on that D-line.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: Russo's been incredible.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Russo too, but I always consider this with Russo.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Let me say this with Russo. I don't know if it's elite. Hold on.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: This is my point.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think it's elite.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: I think Walker is a splash player right now.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: He is a monster that has to be accounted for.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: But can he give you the amount of snaps with that dominant play?
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: You need to make sure he's at his best when it counts, that's for sure.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: Because that's just all big men.
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: It's hard to keep those guys like that.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: Rousseau, to me, has always been a good player.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: I like the way they're using him.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: I think this is the best that his skill set has been used, for sure.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: Getting him off the line scrimmage a little bit, using that length, it shows up.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: He shows up.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: But the numbers don't back it up.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: Chubb is a good player, veteran, tough guy, player, and we know about Ed Oliver.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: My point is I don't see this being a dominant D-line.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: I just see it being as basically four first-rounders that aren't dominating.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: They play hard. They're tough. They fly around.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: The whole defense flies around.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: There's no production.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: There's just no production.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: Somebody's got to make a play. Rousseau has done it.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: The tip, the tip balls and Walker, the tip balls are real.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: They might be, I don't know that stat. I'd like to see that stat.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: If they have the most tip balls on defense.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Well, I've got a story on Greg Rousseau at the site.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Now we chatted about his role, his season.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: And let me just, I'll get that number.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Or is it bad?
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: I want to say he's got seven.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: Anyways, he's on pace for 17 sacks.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: And Oh, what's that? Yeah.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: I thought you meant tip balls too.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: I'm going to see if I can find that stat, who leads the league in tip.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just give me this. I'm sorry, my internet's being a little slow here.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: No, you're good.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was right.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's got seven.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: So this is his current season right now,
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: and I know stats are stats. I love stats.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: But he's first in hurries, first in hits, second in sacks, second in forced fumbles.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: Had the blocked field goal against the Rams.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: And it's hard to really take too much away from,
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: you know, whatever, the fight in Finanos. Finanos.
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: Emergency quarterback.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: He was playing UAB.
- 54:26SPEAKER_00: I was checking. He was playing UAB last year.
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: He actually lit them up.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: And I actually – we forgot to – I'm sorry.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: You gambled on that game, didn't you? No, no, no, no. I looked it up to see.
- 54:35SPEAKER_00: I did not. But I did – He was on my list as a – he's
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: a guy I was watching this whole training camp for the UFL.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: I loved him. Wow.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: He has – I mean, I'm not saying for the NFL, but he has ability.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: All right, go ahead. Sorry.
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: I forgot the name.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: Well, so what was really strange about this Jim Leonard defense is up
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: until this Ravens game, they never blitzed more than 39% per next-gen stats.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: And that was the whole theme, right?
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: There's going to be – Havoc, confusion, disruption.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: The days of bend and doe break, they're over, and they haven't done it.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: And then they blitzed the Ravens 64.5% of the time.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: So almost double that.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: Russo after the game, he said it with a straight face.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: He's like, it wouldn't matter who was quarterback.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: We were expecting the same results, whether it's Lamar Jackson, Stu Puntley, or Joey Finiano.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: So we'll see now against Kyler Murray and the Vikings.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: I I do think, though, that on paper when you're trying to figure out how to win
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: in January, that Russo just hits the nail on the head.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: He said himself in this story, check it out, we're not going to sit back.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: We're going to go for the kill.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: We're going to put our foot on your throat. We want to attack.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: We want to blitz because you're going to make a play or you're going to give up a play.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: And if you give up a play, guess what?
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: You're giving the ball right back to Josh Allen.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: He says he never wants to get in a three-point stance again.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: He hated it.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: He can't see.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: I guess you don't know what you don't know.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: But standing up, he did it a little bit, but doing it full time now,
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: he's anticipating before the snap.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: He knows what's coming.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: He can use his mind.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: And I juxtapose that with Mario Williams in your day with the Bills where he hated that move.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Let us know in the media how much he hated standing up and quit on the team, basically.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: And To paraphrase a teammate,
- 56:37SPEAKER_01: cared more about his remote control cars than playing football for the Bills.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: So Russo, conversely, loves the change.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Never wants to go to a three-point stance.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: Using his mind.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Pointed to a play against the Lions where he saw, oh my gosh, all right,
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: they're going to try to block me with Brock Wright, a tight end.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: It must be play action.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: So here's how I'm going to rush.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: And he gets the sack fumble.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: It's been a great fit. And thank God they have him.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: If Greg Russo...
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Isn't standing up, isn't in this role, isn't making these plays.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: They're losing a game or two.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: To me, Jim, he's been the most valuable player for the Bills this side of Josh Allen.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: Is that crazy?
- 57:22SPEAKER_00: No, I'm thinking.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: No, I got to go cook.
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: I think Cook is essential for this team.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: And the only reason I'm saying that, Tyler, is as good as Russo has been, there's zero.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: It's not translating anything.
- 57:45SPEAKER_00: They're terrible.
- 57:46SPEAKER_00: They're 25th in sack percentage on defense.
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: Minnesota's number one in that stat. That's what I'm saying.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: If Boogie Basham is there instead of Greg Russo.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know how much worse can you get than 25th and 28th in rankings.
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: I guess that's my point.
- 58:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying he's not a good player.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: It's just not translated to this. They need him for sure.
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: They don't have anybody else other than Walker, really.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: But their problem is going to be that secondary is bad. They can sit there.
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: You can sit there and hide it.
- 58:23SPEAKER_00: We've talked about it all year, their linebackers and secondary aren't playmakers.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: These guys are all just running around trying to make tackles and save touchdowns
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: and points, but there's no of them dictating.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Their secondary does not dictate.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: Igben Olsen?
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: He's tough. He's rough? Tough. Can't run. How do
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: you guard Justin Jefferson?
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: A frustrated Justin Jefferson.
- 58:52SPEAKER_00: You can't. You won't.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: They better hope Murray is – or Rousseau is batting balls
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: because they won't be stopping Jefferson.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: So he's pretty valuable.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: Rousseau?
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah. Oh, I do – no.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying – I was saying he's third probably, Tyler.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: I was just saying Cook maybe over Rousseau.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: He's certainly – I'm not saying he's not number two.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: That guy is a good football player. He has lived up. They did a good job.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: They drafted him late. That is a heck of a pick.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, another pick – The Bills had a good, that right tackle that sub for, um,
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: they got him from central Florida in the sixth round a couple of years ago.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: And I love that because I'm a Southeast area scout at heart.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: And anytime you see a guy that they identified him in the six round Gable, um,
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: Tylan, Tylan Grable, Tylan Grable, his, his, his pro day numbers off the charts,
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Tyler. And that is exactly what you look for in the six round.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: Take a measurable guy, see what we can develop and boom.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: You can't put a value on that as a six-round pick.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: Well done.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, the branded bean drafts are really fascinating to parse through here
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: because you can point to Kyer Elam, Maxwell Harrison,
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: two first-round cornerbacks that are very different in size and dimensions, right?
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: I believe that was the Jeffrey Simmons draft too, right?
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: It was, and Dexter Lawrence, and that's why I'm bringing that up.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: And Brian Burns.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: You passed on two, well, at least to stay at D tackle,
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_00: because I always judge drafts on, before you judge drafts on people,
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: always look at the guy that was picked and then who was picked after him
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: at the same position.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_00: To me, that's how you judge it.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I'll always use Sammy Watkins as the example in Buffalo when we drafted Sammy.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: We traded up for Sammy.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: But when you look at that draft, you can't sit there.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: He was not the best receiver. He just wasn't.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: You could argue a bunch of those guys could have been.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: So that, to me, was a bad move on our part.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_00: When you draft Ed Oliver and you pass on two generationals,
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: whew, fireball to me,
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: but nobody cares.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: But then you look at these other picks.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Like who? Walker's the best pick, fourth round.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Christian Benford, 185.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: Shakir, 148.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: Bernard, 89. Cook, 63.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: That's all in the same draft.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_01: Cook was a great pick.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: Grable was 204.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: Great pick.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: A lot of great picks.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: I probably would rather have Keon Coleman and Dwayne Carter than Xavier Worthy.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: That trade.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Well, they're two. They wouldn't have taken where they was in the mix for the Bills.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: They wanted a big wideout. So you'd have to go.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying at the time it was, oh, can you let Xavier?
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: You'd have to look at the other big wideouts and compare Coleman to the other big wideouts.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: And Coleman may be as good as those guys. So it might be.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, to your argument for sure.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: And then 25, Hairston now is a part-time player, I guess.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: T.J. Sanders.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: He rotates. Hasn't given you anything. Just a guy. Jersey swap.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: Landon Jackson.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: I've And then you hit Deion Walker, 109.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: But you need something out of those top three guys.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: And then this year, Davidson Igbenosin has given you a
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_00: lot of corner.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: He's competing.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Skyler Bell, fourth-round receiver.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: I guess it's his opportunity with Palmer out.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: We'll see if he can give you something.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_00: You're not going to whiff. It's going to be hard for them to whiff.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: The defensive players are the ones you really want to study.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: And to being, you know, to defend a GM and being,
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: when you switch defensive coordinators,
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: it can absolutely like rattle and destroy your roster.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: It really can.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: Like we went through an absolute headache trying to match up Jim Schwartz's 4-3
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_00: to Rex's, you know, whatever it was.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_00: I really still don't know to this day.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: But my point of that is it's really frustrating.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: So I don't know how drastic it is what Jim Leonard is asking from each position.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: If they have what he wants
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: on the roster, which is always going to be the coach bailout.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Hey, I don't have my players yet, but you have your players.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: This is the NFL.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: You can get your players that quickly.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_00: And they rotate a lot of guys in.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: They're trying a lot of different players at safety right now. And corner.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: They're playing a lot of different guys, so they're trying to figure it out.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're working. Which, trade for somebody then.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: Go get Budapaker. Fair.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Go get Amani Cooper, right?
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, Hooker.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: Hooker, geez.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, get this player that I didn't get his name right.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: No, but I know what you mean, though.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_00: Somebody that's going to make an impact. What did I say?
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: Somebody's got to go get the football.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: You've got to get that football.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: And they also gave up a million yards to Burrow, too.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_01: A nose for the ball would fit into the plan of attacking and creating turnovers
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: and getting three and outs and taking chances.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: So maybe that's the guy.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: All right, that's going to do it for this episode of Real Football.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for watching, listening, sharing.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: Again, have some stories up.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: DJ Moore, Greg Russo, golongtd.com, and a lot more planned.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Did a little traveling around the country for some features.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_01: Jim, what do you want to read?
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: Let me know.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: You too, Jim. What do you want to read?
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, you don't write about what I want to read.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_00: Gambling? Sorry.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: No, not necessarily gambling.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: I want you to find out why Greg Roman and Hackett have jobs.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_01: How's that running back for Arizona doing that they drafted high?
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: In that vein, I mentioned Justice Hill when he was talking about Roman.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: He's like, yeah, he kind of just keeps getting jobs too.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_01: So I'm not crazy. He said that.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_00: You just did the story. I don't have to read it. You just did the story.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: I feel better.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_00: Ask Sammy Watkins, same thing.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: I bet you might get that answer.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: Ask Lamar Jackson.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: All right, everyone. Thanks so much.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: We'll catch you next week.
- 1:05:01[music]
