- 0:11Hello friends, it's Tuesday and it is December 31st, the last
- 0:17day of 2024. What a remarkable day to find
- 0:22ourselves on at the end of the year and what a wonderful way
- 0:27for us to spend a moment of this day settling in and continuing
- 0:31our rhythm of spending time in God's Word.
- 0:35And today is one of those classic chapters that you have
- 0:39known since you were a little Tucker in Sunday school.
- 0:43Yes, this is the chapter where where God grants Solomon A wish
- 0:49and Solomon asks for wisdom and then he judges wisely between
- 0:54the two women claiming to be mother of a baby.
- 0:57So while you know this story, we are going to listen with fresh
- 1:01ears and we are going to hear what it is that God has to
- 1:04communicate to us through His Word today.
- 1:07So Holy Spirit, come on this last day of the year, be present
- 1:14in US and shape us as we hear your Word and receive your
- 1:19message with an open heart. Well friends, nothing left to do
- 1:24but to read together First Kings chapter 3.
- 1:39Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and
- 1:43married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the
- 1:46city of David until he could finish building his palace and
- 1:50the temple of the Lord and the walls surrounding the city.
- 1:54At that time the people of Israel sacrificed their
- 1:56offerings at local places of worship, for a temple honouring
- 2:00the name of the Lord had not yet been built.
- 2:04Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his
- 2:07father David, except that Solomon too offered sacrifices
- 2:12and burned incense at the local places of worship.
- 2:16The most important of these places of worship was at Gibeon,
- 2:20so the king went there and sacrificed 1000 burnt offerings.
- 2:25That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream.
- 2:28And God said, What do you want? Ask and I will give it to you,
- 2:34Solomon replied. You showed great and faithful
- 2:38love to your servant, my father David, because he was honest and
- 2:42true and faithful to you, and you have continued to show this
- 2:46great and faithful love to him to day by giving him a son to
- 2:50sit on his throne. Now, O Lord my God, you have
- 2:55chosen me King, instead of my father David.
- 2:59But I am like a little child who doesn't know his way around, and
- 3:03here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so
- 3:08great and numerous they cannot be counted.
- 3:12Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people
- 3:16well and know the difference between right and wrong.
- 3:20For who by himself is able to govern this great people of
- 3:23yours? The Lord was pleased that
- 3:27Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, because you have
- 3:32asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice, and have
- 3:36not asked for a long life, a wealth, or the death of your
- 3:40enemies, I will give you what you asked for.
- 3:44I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no
- 3:49one else has had or ever will have.
- 3:52And I will also give you what you did not ask for, riches and
- 3:56fame. No other king in all the world
- 4:00will be compared to you for the rest of your life.
- 4:04And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your
- 4:08father David did, I will give you a long life.
- 4:13Then Solomon woke up and realised it had been a dream.
- 4:18He returned to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the
- 4:20Lord's covenant, where he sacrifice burnt offerings and
- 4:24peace offerings. Then he invited all his
- 4:27officials to a great banquet. Some time later, 2 prostitutes
- 4:33came to the king to have an argument settled.
- 4:35Please, my Lord, one of them began.
- 4:38This woman and I live in the same house.
- 4:41I gave birth to a baby while she was with me in the house.
- 4:45Three days later this woman also had a baby.
- 4:48We were alone. There were only two of us in the
- 4:51house, but her baby died during the night when she rolled over
- 4:55on it. Then she got up in the night and
- 4:57took my son from beside me. While I was asleep.
- 5:01She laid her dead child in my arms and took mine to sleep
- 5:04beside her. And in the morning, when I tried
- 5:07to nurse my son, he was dead. But when I looked more closely
- 5:11in the morning light, I saw that it wasn't my son at all.
- 5:15Then the other woman interrupted.
- 5:17It certainly was your son, and the living child is mine.
- 5:21No, the first woman said, the living child is mine and the
- 5:25dead 1 is yours. And so they argued back and
- 5:28forth before the king. Then the king said, let's Get
- 5:33the facts straight. Both of you claim the living
- 5:36child is yours, and each says that the dead 1 belongs to the
- 5:39other. All right, bring me a sword.
- 5:43So a sword was brought to the king.
- 5:46Then he said, Cut the living child in two, and give half to
- 5:50one woman and half to the other. Then the woman who was the real
- 5:53mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried
- 5:57out, Oh no, my Lord, give her the child, please do not kill
- 6:01him. But the other woman said, all
- 6:04right, he will be neither yours nor mine.
- 6:07Divide him between us. Then the king said, Do not kill
- 6:11the child, but give him to the woman who wants him to live, for
- 6:16she is his mother. When all Israel heard the King's
- 6:20decision, the people were in awe of the king, for they saw the
- 6:25wisdom God had given him for rendering justice.
- 6:38Ah Lord, we see in this chapter that you certainly do love a
- 6:42servant heart. And Jesus, we saw the way that
- 6:47you lived, always looking for ways to serve others, and in
- 6:52great and small ways, always giving, always serving, always
- 6:57for the other. Our Lord, it is human nature for
- 7:00us to always think of our own needs and for those needs to
- 7:04sound awfully loud in the dialogue of our mind.
- 7:07Our Lord, I just pray that You soften our hearts and transform
- 7:11us from the inside out, giving us Your servant heart that we
- 7:16would yearn for others, and that just as Your love is a selfless
- 7:21love, that You would shape us to have that same selfless love.
- 7:26And when we get that wrong and we look after our own needs
- 7:29first, as we are going to do, because that's how we roll.
- 7:34Our Lord, continue that long and good work of transformation
- 7:38where the fruits of Your Spirit grow more evident in US every
- 7:42day. Give us Your wisdom.
- 7:47Thank you that your Holy Spirit lives in US, softening us,
- 7:52wisening us, and transforming us every day.
- 7:56We just give you free reign of our hearts and praise you.
- 8:01And it's in your name that we pray, Jesus, Amen.
