Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The World of Rebel Arts kicks off in Wellington today.
- 0:02Speaker 1: You can expect everything from dog bowl dresses to road
- 0:05Speaker 1: cone gowns. Plenty of road cones around to use. I
- 0:07Speaker 1: suppose big crowds made a big boost for the capitol
- 0:09Speaker 1: and boy do they need it. Meg Williams as the
- 0:11Speaker 1: World of Wearable Arts CEO with me this morning. Meg,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning. Good to have you on the show.
- 0:17Speaker 1: What is the road cone gown?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Well, that was actually a supreme winner from last year,
- 0:23Speaker 2: which was actually inspired by our designers visit to New
- 0:27Speaker 2: Zealand a number of years ago after the Chiquarder earthquakes actually,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and she was many of our designers come over for
- 0:35Speaker 2: the show and then afterwards they take a trip around
- 0:38Speaker 2: New Zealand and on that trip she was really inspired
- 0:42Speaker 2: by the resilience of the country and how everyone had
- 0:46Speaker 2: pulled together after that, and so that was actually the
- 0:49Speaker 2: inspiration for that piece. It's a spectacular piece and yeah,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and so it just so happened that it came into
- 0:58Speaker 2: the competition last year.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Meghap.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It's an example of the kind of invention and imagination
- 1:04Speaker 2: that that designers put to put to the.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Task for whom how many of you. Are you expecting today, Meg.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Well, we opened this week. We have pull on Friday,
- 1:14Speaker 2: so we had our first dress rehearsal last night, and
- 1:17Speaker 2: across the season we expect around sixty thousand and many
- 1:20Speaker 2: of those are from out of the region, so we
- 1:23Speaker 2: have about seventy percent from outside of the Wellington region.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And what we had Roadeconds you said was the Supreme Winner.
- 1:29Speaker 1: What are we expecting this year?
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I can tell you a little bit about
- 1:33Speaker 2: the show. The show is called Rise, and it's about
- 1:37Speaker 2: a city illuminated with the creative spirit. And so there's
- 1:40Speaker 2: a cityscape in which we invite the audience into six
- 1:43Speaker 2: different sections and so the wearable our designers designed for
- 1:46Speaker 2: those sections to give you a little taste of a
- 1:48Speaker 2: couple of those. We have avant garde, which is kind
- 1:52Speaker 2: of at the cature end. It's very beautiful and in
- 1:56Speaker 2: the show that the theme is less and infused. Music
- 2:00Speaker 2: can sultry, and we also try and make something fly
- 2:02Speaker 2: in that section that we sh shouldn't make fly, which
- 2:05Speaker 2: is a hallmark of what wow it does. We have
- 2:07Speaker 2: a section called Neon, which, as you can imagine, is
- 2:11Speaker 2: just a riot of color and our designers have really
- 2:13Speaker 2: gone to town in that section. That's just huge fun.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And the music soundtrack is this nineties inspired club hits,
- 2:20Speaker 2: so some real bang isn't there. And then we've finished
- 2:22Speaker 2: with Miss Simn Legends, which is ready for designs inspired
- 2:26Speaker 2: by the mythic and the finale is really a beautiful
- 2:32Speaker 2: operatic moment with an incredible vocal performance. So that's just
- 2:36Speaker 2: a taste of about half of what they wanted to
- 2:38Speaker 2: just can expect it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Wow, this year brilliant and sixty thousand people heading to
- 2:42Speaker 1: Wellington got to be a good thing. Nick. Thank you
- 2:44Speaker 1: very much for your time this morning, and best luck
- 2:46Speaker 1: with this year's world of Wearable Art. Meg Williams as
- 2:48Speaker 1: the chief executive for.
