Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kitty Foyle, a young working woman, must choose between Dr.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Mark Eisen, the physician in her present life, and Winn Strafford,
- 0:08Speaker 1: the wealthy Philadelphia mainline man she has loved in the past.
- 0:14Speaker 1: On May 5th, 1941, Lux Radio Theater presented episode 306,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Kitty Foyle, adapted from the 1940 RKO Radio Pictures film
- 0:25Speaker 1: based on Christopher Morley's novel. Ginger Rogers reprises her screen
- 0:30Speaker 1: role as Kitty with Dennis Morgan, James Craig, and Verna Felton.
- 0:37Speaker 1: The drama moves between New York and Philadelphia as Kitty
- 0:41Speaker 1: confronts the differences between her own background and Wynn's social world.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We now take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Lutz presents Hollywood. The Lux Radio Theater brings you Ginger
- 1:10Speaker 2: Rogers in Kitty Foyle with Dennis Morgan and James Craig.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Cecil B. DeMille.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. The last time Ginger
- 1:30Speaker 2: Rogers starred in the Lux Radio Theater... She went directly
- 1:33Speaker 2: from this stage to the preview of her picture, Kitty Foyle.
- 1:37Speaker 2: We all wished her good luck, but by that time,
- 1:39Speaker 2: luck had nothing to do with the case. Simple justice
- 1:42Speaker 2: gave her the applause of critics and public. And finally,
- 1:46Speaker 2: the Motion Picture Academy Award for the finest performance by
- 1:50Speaker 2: any screen actress during the year. And tonight, as Ginger
- 1:54Speaker 2: Rogers plays her greatest role for the first time on
- 1:56Speaker 2: the air, she has the same two leading men you
- 1:59Speaker 2: saw in the picture, Dennis Morgan and James Craig Christopher
- 2:04Speaker 2: Morley called his novel the natural history of a woman,
- 2:08Speaker 2: and the archaeo picture was exactly that. Few stories can
- 2:12Speaker 2: take an audience so close to the inner secrets of
- 2:15Speaker 2: a woman's heart, and certainly no woman ever had a
- 2:18Speaker 2: more sympathetic portrayal than Ginger Rogers gives Kitty Foyle. An
- 2:23Speaker 2: Academy Award is a recognition of the highest in quality,
- 2:27Speaker 2: and we've tried to make every detail of our production
- 2:29Speaker 2: match that. Of course, to start with, we had Luxe Flakes,
- 2:32Speaker 2: There's no question about quality there. And I believe the
- 2:36Speaker 2: whole company has outdone itself to make this an unforgettable
- 2:39Speaker 2: premiere here in the Lux Radio Theater tonight. You've inspired
- 2:43Speaker 2: that effort by your genuine interest in every activity of
- 2:47Speaker 2: this theater. And your loyalty to our product has told
- 2:51Speaker 2: us better than anything else how sincere that interest really is.
- 2:56Speaker 2: The reward we offer is the best plays and stars
- 2:59Speaker 2: that we can find. And as far as Lux Flakes
- 3:02Speaker 2: is concerned... as fine a product as modern science can devise.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And now for the finest that Hollywood can devise. We
- 3:11Speaker 2: raise the curtain on the first act of Kitty Foyle,
- 3:13Speaker 2: starring Ginger Rogers as Kitty Foyle, Dennis Morgan as Wynne,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and James Craig as Mark.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Doesn't female independence mean anything to you girls?
- 3:25Speaker 6: After all, what's the difference between men bachelors and girl bachelors?
- 3:29Speaker 5: Men bachelors are that way on purpose.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That was Kitty Foyle speaking. Kitty is young and pretty,
- 3:40Speaker 2: but very wise, too. She works at Delphine's Beauty Salon
- 3:44Speaker 2: in New York, where, in the employee's locker room, the
- 3:47Speaker 2: girl's conversation turns invariably to one subject, the male of
- 3:51Speaker 2: the species. Now it's 5.30, and the girls slip through
- 3:55Speaker 2: the door to join the scurrying crowds on Fifth Avenue. Kitty,
- 3:59Speaker 2: trim and inviting, stands near the curb, her coat collar
- 4:03Speaker 2: turned up high against the driving snow. A taxi pulls
- 4:06Speaker 2: up quickly, and a young man hops out.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Sorry I'm late, Kitty, but we got a couple of
- 4:12Speaker 7: emergency cases to hospital, and I had to stay.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Been waiting long?
- 4:15Speaker 5: No, just got here.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Come on, get in. Step on it, driver. I'm in
- 4:18Speaker 4: a hurry.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Say, you must be as hungry as I am.
- 4:22Speaker 7: Well, I'm afraid you're going to get a little hungrier,
- 4:24Speaker 7: because I've got to catch another case first.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Before dinner, Mark.
- 4:27Speaker 7: Yes, emergency. Over in the tenement district. Matter of fact,
- 4:30Speaker 7: we're racing the stork right this minute.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Well, I hope we win. Now, now, now. The world's
- 4:45Speaker 5: not that bad, is it?
- 4:48Speaker 8: Oh, it is.
- 4:48Speaker 5: You were awful pretty anyway.
- 4:54Speaker 4: All finished.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Oh, how's the mother doing?
- 4:57Speaker 4: Pretty well. Kitty, you have no idea how right you
- 5:02Speaker 4: look with a baby in your arms.
- 5:03Speaker 5: I know how right I feel. What's his name?
- 5:06Speaker 4: Well, they haven't decided. Well, you see, there isn't any father.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Might have been better if he hadn't pulled through.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Don't say that, Mark. It's always better to pull through.
- 5:17Speaker 4: There's something about the way you said that that makes me... Kitty,
- 5:22Speaker 4: will you take this ring? I mean, will you marry me?
- 5:25Speaker 5: Mark!
- 5:26Speaker 7: You see, I've got a lot of money tied up
- 5:28Speaker 7: in this little hoop. And, well, there's no other way
- 5:30Speaker 7: I can get any use out of it.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Well, Kitty?
- 5:33Speaker 5: Mark, can you... Find my finger in all these blankets.
- 5:46Speaker 7: Let me get something straight. You did say yes, didn't you?
- 5:50Speaker 7: I mean, it's all clear and there's no confusion. You
- 5:52Speaker 7: understood what I asked you.
- 5:53Speaker 5: You asked me to marry you, didn't you?
- 5:55Speaker 4: That's it, exactly.
- 5:56Speaker 5: I got it. That's why I said yes.
- 5:58Speaker 7: Well, what I'm getting around to is that fellow in Philadelphia.
- 6:01Speaker 7: Is that all over with?
- 6:03Speaker 5: All over, Mark.
- 6:05Speaker 4: You're not kidding yourself, are you? It wouldn't do either
- 6:07Speaker 4: of us any good if you weren't sure about it.
- 6:10Speaker 5: I'm sure, darling.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Then we're getting married tomorrow.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Why, doctor.
- 6:14Speaker 7: Look, I've got to go back to the hospital now,
- 6:16Speaker 7: but I'll check out at midnight. You meet me there
- 6:17Speaker 7: with your bags packed, and we'll go straight to Gretna Green.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Gretna Green? Sure.
- 6:21Speaker 7: They've got a justice apiece that stays open all night,
- 6:23Speaker 7: just like a drugstore. Can you be ready by then?
- 6:25Speaker 5: And who says I can't?
- 6:27Speaker 7: Okay, then meet me at St. Timothy's Hospital at 12
- 6:29Speaker 7: smack on the dot.
- 6:30Speaker 5: 12 smack on the dot, St. Timothy's.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Driver, Pocahontas Hotel for Women, West 34th Street. But it's
- 6:36Speaker 7: the last time you'll have to take her there, I
- 6:38Speaker 7: promise you that.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Hello, Kitty.
- 6:55Speaker 9: Kitty.
- 6:57Speaker 5: When?
- 6:58Speaker 4: Surprised to see me?
- 7:00Speaker 5: What are you doing out of Philadelphia on a night
- 7:02Speaker 5: like this? How did you get in here? Men aren't
- 7:06Speaker 5: allowed in this hotel, you know.
- 7:08Speaker 4: The operator in the back elevator is corrupt.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Oh, when? Why did you come?
- 7:14Speaker 4: You sent for me.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I sent for you? This ring.
- 7:17Speaker 4: The one I gave you. I told you if you
- 7:20Speaker 4: ever needed me or wanted me, send it back.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Oh, I forgot that isn't what I meant.
- 7:25Speaker 10: What?
- 7:26Speaker 5: I sent the ring back because that was all. That
- 7:30Speaker 5: was the end.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Don't say that, Kitty.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Oh, but it's true, Wynne. You'll have to go.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I can't go. Not until I've told you something. I'm
- 7:39Speaker 4: sailing at midnight.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Where?
- 7:42Speaker 4: South America, Buenos Aires. To live there.
- 7:47Speaker 5: With your wife? Alone.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Unless you'll go with me. I've broken away for good.
- 7:55Speaker 4: There's no life for me without you. I want you.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I need you. I love you this minute as I've
- 8:02Speaker 4: never loved you before.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Oh, but when? It's too late. Five years. Too late.
- 8:06Speaker 4: It'll never be too late, Kitty. What we've had can't die.
- 8:11Speaker 4: You haven't forgotten, have you?
- 8:12Speaker 5: Oh, I thought I had. I was sure I had.
- 8:15Speaker 4: No, darling. We must never forget any of it. Kitty, I...
- 8:21Speaker 4: I haven't much to offer, except me. I... tried to
- 8:25Speaker 4: get a divorce, but I couldn't. I wish it were different,
- 8:28Speaker 4: but that's the way it is.
- 8:30Speaker 5: I see.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Whatever you decide, I am sailing anyway. I'm hoping, I'm
- 8:37Speaker 4: asking that we'll leave together and be together always.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Oh, Wynne, don't ask me anything. Don't let me think.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Just take me with you.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Darling.
- 8:44Speaker 5: When do we go?
- 8:45Speaker 4: We sail at midnight. I'll be at the pier with
- 8:47Speaker 4: everything arranged. Will you meet me there?
- 8:49Speaker 5: Yes, Wynne.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Kitty, I love you. I'll have to hurry to get
- 8:55Speaker 4: everything done. Don't be late.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Oh, when? When you didn't tell me what boat or pier.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Just like it always was. When I look at you,
- 9:03Speaker 4: I can't think of anything else. It's Pier 48. Goodbye, darling.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Don't be late.
- 9:08Speaker 5: I won't. I'll be there ten minutes ahead of time.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Pier 48. Midnight. Pier 48. You're making a mistake, you know.
- 9:18Speaker 6: What?
- 9:19Speaker 5: Here I am, over here in the mirror. I'm you,
- 9:22Speaker 5: Kitty Foyle. And I think you're making a mistake. Am I?
- 9:29Speaker 5: You're that little girl on the sleigh ride. Trouble is,
- 9:32Speaker 5: you're no longer a little girl. You're a grown woman now.
- 9:36Speaker 5: I'm only 24. You're 26. Don't try to kid me. Well,
- 9:42Speaker 5: I'm not old anyway. And I know what I'm doing.
- 9:45Speaker 5: It's a very unsatisfactory role you're preparing to play, even
- 9:49Speaker 5: under the best of circumstances. We'll just have to face it.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Correction.
- 9:55Speaker 5: You'll have to face it. Married people face things together,
- 9:59Speaker 5: but you won't be married. Did you ever think of
- 10:01Speaker 5: it that way? Marriage isn't everything. What is it anyway?
- 10:05Speaker 5: It's just a piece of paper like any other legal document.
- 10:09Speaker 5: A lot of pretty fine things come out of that
- 10:11Speaker 5: piece of paper, Kitty. A home, children. You'd be a
- 10:14Speaker 5: lot happier with Mark and that little piece of paper
- 10:17Speaker 5: than you ever could be with Winn. And a snug
- 10:20Speaker 5: little apartment with a key for him and a key
- 10:22Speaker 5: for you. You know what I think? I think you're wrong.
- 10:28Speaker 5: I remember you using those same words before. Way back
- 10:33Speaker 5: when you lived in a little house on Griscombe Street
- 10:35Speaker 5: in Philadelphia. That's where Pop brought you up, and what
- 10:39Speaker 5: a grand guy he was. It was the night of
- 10:42Speaker 5: the Philadelphia Assembly. You were about 15 then. A gawky,
- 10:46Speaker 5: long-legged kid. He came home late, trying to sneak past
- 10:50Speaker 5: the parlor and up the stairs without Pop seeing him.
- 10:53Speaker 5: But he saw you all right.
- 10:56Speaker 11: Kitty, Kitty, come in here.
- 10:57Speaker 8: Hello, Pop, I was just.
- 10:59Speaker 11: Come here.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I was just.
- 11:01Speaker 11: I know what you were just doing. The assembly's tonight.
- 11:04Speaker 9: And you were downtown gazing at those rich mainliners, parading
- 11:08Speaker 9: into the Bellevue Stratford and getting silly ideas.
- 11:11Speaker 5: No, I wasn't, Pop. Really, I was watching.
- 11:13Speaker 9: Judy, you've got to get this trash out of your head.
- 11:17Speaker 9: Get your mind off of that Tommy Rotten of society page.
- 11:19Speaker 5: But it's not Tommy Rotten, Pop. It's not more Tommy
- 11:22Speaker 5: Rotten than the Lady of Shalott.
- 11:24Speaker 10: Who's she?
- 11:25Speaker 5: You know. And sometimes through the mirror blue, the nights
- 11:29Speaker 5: came riding two by two. She hath no loyal knight
- 11:33Speaker 5: and true, the Lady of Shalott.
- 11:36Speaker 10: Judas Priest!
- 11:37Speaker 9: If you're not reading about those mainline monkeys, you've got
- 11:40Speaker 9: your head stuck in a Cinderella book.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Well, the Lady of Shalott wasn't exactly Cinderella, but it
- 11:46Speaker 5: was the same idea. Oh, Pop, it must be wonderful.
- 11:51Speaker 8: Why?
- 11:52Speaker 5: Well, you know, after you've been sitting in ashes all
- 11:55Speaker 5: of your life and then all of a sudden a
- 11:57Speaker 5: prince comes along.
- 11:58Speaker 9: Judas Priest, if ever a man deserved to be hung
- 12:02Speaker 9: since the fellow who started that Cinderella stuff. Putting crazy
- 12:05Speaker 9: ideas into girls' heads. Why, they're the ruination of more
- 12:08Speaker 9: girls than 40 actors.
- 12:10Speaker 5: I don't see why there's so much ruination about it.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after. Always do.
- 12:17Speaker 11: Yes, and that's where those writing fellas are smart, too.
- 12:20Speaker 9: They always end the story before it really begins. And
- 12:23Speaker 9: that's the reason I'm going to get all this junk
- 12:26Speaker 9: about the main line in the Philadelphia Assembly out of
- 12:28Speaker 9: your head.
- 12:29Speaker 10: So that you won't make.
- 12:30Speaker 11: A fool out of yourself later on.
- 12:32Speaker 5: You know what I think, Pop? I think you're wrong. Well,
- 12:40Speaker 5: time moved on, and skirts got six inches longer, and
- 12:43Speaker 5: they stopped playing Sonny Boy and took up Who's Afraid
- 12:46Speaker 5: of the Big Bad Wolf, and then, boom, came the Depression.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And you had to trade in a few of those
- 12:51Speaker 5: dreams for a volume of Greg Shorthand, remember? You finally
- 12:54Speaker 5: got a diploma from the Vesey School of Business, but
- 12:56Speaker 5: you were still one of the vast army of unemployed
- 12:59Speaker 5: until 1932, October 23rd. That's when you went to work
- 13:03Speaker 5: for Wynn Strafford. Wynwood Strafford VI. A true prince of
- 13:08Speaker 5: the main line. Instead of a white horse, he had $ 10, 000
- 13:12Speaker 5: his family had given him to start a magazine. Poor Wynn.
- 13:16Speaker 5: He did so much want to do something on his own.
- 13:19Speaker 5: You'd been there about two months.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Miss Foyle, this isn't quite right.
- 13:26Speaker 5: What's the matter?
- 13:27Speaker 4: This letter you typed for me, it's wrong. The use
- 13:29Speaker 4: of Esquire in business is a New York affectation and
- 13:31Speaker 4: very bad taste.
- 13:32Speaker 5: But I've seen letters come to your address, Mr. Winwood Strafford-esque.
- 13:36Speaker 4: From New Yorkers, perhaps. It's still wrong.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Well, then I've certainly seen them just plain-esque. Say, how
- 13:42Speaker 5: does a person get to be an Esquire, anyway?
- 13:45Speaker 4: Well, I don't know. He just is.
- 13:47Speaker 9: Oh.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Pop says you get to be an Esquire if you
- 13:51Speaker 5: can sit on one animal and chase another.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Did I sound stuffy? I'm sorry.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Pardon me.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Okay, get stuff for yourself. I've said I'm sorry. Did
- 14:02Speaker 4: you get my column off the dictaphone?
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yes, and it's... What?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Nothing.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Go ahead. What about it? Don't be afraid.
- 14:08Speaker 5: I was just thinking about the way your voice sounds
- 14:11Speaker 5: on the dictaphone. You know who it sounds like?
- 14:13Speaker 4: No. Who?
- 14:15Speaker 5: Ronald Coleman.
- 14:16Speaker 10: Huh.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Really?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Uncanny.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I played the record over and over again, and it's lovely.
- 14:22Speaker 4: That's funny.
- 14:23Speaker 5: Yes. So different from what it is, actually.
- 14:26Speaker 10: Huh.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Ronald Coleman, eh? Do you really think it's true, Miss Foyle,
- 14:39Speaker 4: that my voice sounds rather like that of Mr. Coleman? Ah, Shangri-La,
- 14:43Speaker 4: Miss Foyle.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Foil, foil, boil an oil.
- 14:53Speaker 4: And furthermore, it might be wise if... Oh, oh, come in,
- 14:58Speaker 4: Miss Foyle, I... I was just trying a little dictation
- 15:01Speaker 4: on the machine.
- 15:02Speaker 5: I'd just like to say I'm sorry. I was fresh before.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I didn't notice it.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Well, I was, and I'm sorry.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Oh, it's quite all right.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Oh, you want to run that record off now?
- 15:11Speaker 4: Oh, no, thanks. I was just figuring how it worked. Well,
- 15:13Speaker 4: I'll show you.
- 15:13Speaker 5: It's really very.
- 15:14Speaker 4: It's not at all necessary, really. Don't you think you'd
- 15:15Speaker 4: better pop out to lunch?
- 15:16Speaker 5: Only take ten seconds. Besides, what am I here for?
- 15:19Speaker 4: Really, Miss Foyle, there's no need to.
- 15:20Speaker 5: There, and you turn it on here, and then.
- 15:22Speaker 11: Do.
- 15:24Speaker 4: You really think it's true, Miss Foyle, that my voice
- 15:26Speaker 4: sounds rather like that of Mr.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Coleman's?
- 15:29Speaker 4: Ah, Shangri-La, Miss Foyle.
- 15:31Speaker 11: Foyle, Foyle, boil an oil.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Roses are red. Violets are blue. Miss Foyle has nice legs.
- 15:40Speaker 12: I love you.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Is that all? And I'll thank you, Miss Foyle, not
- 15:46Speaker 4: to look so beautiful during conferences. We have difficulties enough
- 15:49Speaker 4: getting this magazine out without disturbing the personnel, particularly myself.
- 15:55Speaker 5: I think I will go out to lunch after all.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute, please. Let me explain, will you?
- 16:00Speaker 5: Win-win, boiling gin.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I'm terribly sorry. Really, I never intended. I mean, I
- 16:06Speaker 4: was simply testing, you know, like on the radio.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Will you please let me out?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Miss Foyle, wait. I want to give you some dictation
- 16:15Speaker 4: before you go. Sit down, please.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Well....
- 16:19Speaker 4: Ah, let's see. Inter-office memo to Miss Foyle. I'm... I'm
- 16:26Speaker 4: sorry I said you're too beautiful.
- 16:30Speaker 10: But you are.
- 16:31Speaker 4: I'm sorry I said you disturb me. But you do.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I'm sorry you seem to think I'm making love to you.
- 16:42Speaker 4: But I am.
- 16:46Speaker 11: There's no getting around it.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Those were probably the happiest days in your whole life.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Days when you and Wynne were still learning those little
- 16:57Speaker 5: things about each other that make two ordinarily normal people
- 17:00Speaker 5: a little daffy when they're together. Like the first time
- 17:02Speaker 5: you went to New York, remember? He took you to Jono's.
- 17:06Speaker 5: They had to have a car to get in in
- 17:07Speaker 5: those days. They had a radio running full blast to
- 17:10Speaker 5: get the election returns. Ah, Mr.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Strafford, I have this one bottle. I save it just
- 17:19Speaker 4: for you. Thanks, Jono.
- 17:20Speaker 10: Strega?
- 17:21Speaker 4: Strega.
- 17:22Speaker 5: What's strega?
- 17:23Speaker 4: It's Italian brandy. They say that if two people drink
- 17:25Speaker 4: it together, they'll never drink it apart.
- 17:27Speaker 5: How cozy.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Why so solemn, Kitty?
- 17:30Speaker 5: Oh, I was just wondering.
- 17:33Speaker 4: What about?
- 17:34Speaker 5: Why did you bring me to New York?
- 17:36Speaker 4: I thought you'd like it. Why?
- 17:39Speaker 10: Because.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Well, you see, when I was going to school in Manitou, Illinois,
- 17:43Speaker 5: it was a very small town and everybody else knew
- 17:46Speaker 5: everybody else's business. So when a man wanted to take
- 17:49Speaker 5: somebody out and he didn't care very much about being
- 17:52Speaker 5: seen with her, he always took her up to Chicago.
- 17:55Speaker 5: I see.
- 17:57Speaker 4: But that's not it. I wanted to make a good
- 18:01Speaker 4: impression on you. So I brought you where I thought
- 18:04Speaker 4: I most likely could do it.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry if I.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Kitty, I've got an idea. Will you go at the
- 18:10Speaker 4: assembly with me this year?
- 18:11Speaker 5: Are you kidding?
- 18:12Speaker 4: I mean it, Kitty. This isn't just a gesture. I
- 18:15Speaker 4: want you to come, please.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Oh, Wynne. Have you ever had a dream come to
- 18:19Speaker 5: life right in front of your very eyes?
- 18:21Speaker 4: No, but I haven't given up hope. Is it a date?
- 18:24Speaker 5: I'm crazy, I know, but it's a date.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Kitty, lean close to me. I've got to kiss you.
- 18:31Speaker 13: Attention, everybody.
- 18:34Speaker 7: Republican National Headquarters have just conceded that the next president
- 18:37Speaker 7: of the United States will be Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
- 18:43Speaker 13: Hooray! Hooray!
- 18:44Speaker 5: Hey, what are you celebrating about? Hoover didn't win?
- 18:48Speaker 4: I'm celebrating our first kiss.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Oh, you're crazy.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Come on, we're getting out of here.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Hey, what's the idea?
- 18:53Speaker 4: Roosevelt's horning in on my celebration. We're going to Lake
- 18:56Speaker 4: Pocono to see the sunset.
- 18:57Speaker 14: But we're too late.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It's already set. Okay. We'll see the moon rise.
- 19:02Speaker 13: Come on.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Yes? Tell me where we are.
- 19:16Speaker 4: We're in the Pocono Mountains, situated in the state of Pennsylvania,
- 19:21Speaker 4: sitting in front of a fireplace. Talking of nothing.
- 19:24Speaker 5: No, but where are we really? In heaven?
- 19:28Speaker 4: No.
- 19:28Speaker 5: No?
- 19:29Speaker 4: In love.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Oh, tell me about love.
- 19:34Speaker 4: First, there was a man. And just as soon as
- 19:37Speaker 4: he had time to learn his way about, there was
- 19:40Speaker 4: a woman.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Was the woman beautiful? Very.
- 19:46Speaker 4: She had red hair, and her nose went like so.
- 19:51Speaker 4: and her eyes, they were as blue-green as the sea itself.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Looked quite a bit like me, huh?
- 19:58Speaker 4: Well, her voice didn't sound so much like music, and
- 20:01Speaker 4: her eyes didn't trap the starlight one half as cleverly,
- 20:05Speaker 4: and she wasn't nearly so beautiful.
- 20:07Speaker 5: And what did the man and the woman do?
- 20:11Speaker 4: Well, at first they just hung around. They didn't take
- 20:14Speaker 4: any notice of each other at all. Oh, maybe a
- 20:17Speaker 4: grunt now and then. But certainly nothing more. And then
- 20:21Speaker 4: one night, a strange thing happened.
- 20:24Speaker 5: What?
- 20:26Speaker 4: The man and woman were sitting in front of a fire.
- 20:29Speaker 4: The firelight played upon the woman's face. And the man,
- 20:33Speaker 4: for the first time, saw how beautiful she was. Looking
- 20:37Speaker 4: into her eyes, he suddenly beheld... All the wonders of life.
- 20:42Speaker 4: So immediately he made love to her.
- 20:44Speaker 5: How?
- 20:46Speaker 4: Well, first he bent down over her and rubbed her
- 20:51Speaker 4: nose with his. Like this.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Didn't the woman object?
- 20:56Speaker 11: No.
- 20:58Speaker 4: She loved him, too.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Why?
- 21:01Speaker 4: Well.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Because he was everything that she had ever dreamed of.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 21:08Speaker 10: Maybe.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Oh, let me see. Where was I?
- 21:13Speaker 5: You were just about to kiss me.
- 21:26Speaker 10: Did he?
- 21:27Speaker 5: Pop, what are you doing up? Didn't Dr. Cartwright tell
- 21:29Speaker 5: you to stay in bed?
- 21:30Speaker 10: Dr.
- 21:31Speaker 11: Cartwright is a quack.
- 21:32Speaker 5: Char, char, and who said he wasn't? Now get over
- 21:33Speaker 5: on that couch and stay there.
- 21:34Speaker 10: Oh, all right.
- 21:35Speaker 5: I'm going to the office and I'll be out for
- 21:37Speaker 5: dinner tonight, but I'll come home first.
- 21:38Speaker 10: Kitty.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Yes, Pop?
- 21:40Speaker 10: Have you got time to sit down a minute?
- 21:41Speaker 5: What's on your mind, Pop?
- 21:42Speaker 10: Wind strafford.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Oh.
- 21:44Speaker 10: Kitty, I don't know how much longer I'm going to
- 21:46Speaker 10: be around here.
- 21:46Speaker 5: Pop.
- 21:47Speaker 9: And I don't know how much good I could do anyway. Kitty,
- 21:50Speaker 9: I thought I had all this junk rooted out of
- 21:52Speaker 9: your mind.
- 21:53Speaker 5: What junk?
- 21:54Speaker 11: Cinderella and her blasted prince. Don't you see, Kitty? It's
- 21:58Speaker 11: no good.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Pop, you might as well try to argue me out
- 22:00Speaker 5: of a case of bronchitis because that's the way it is.
- 22:03Speaker 5: I love him.
- 22:05Speaker 10: Judas Priest.
- 22:06Speaker 5: You said it.
- 22:07Speaker 10: You mean you want to marry him?
- 22:09Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 22:10Speaker 10: Has he ever asked you yet?
- 22:12Speaker 5: No, but.
- 22:13Speaker 4: No, but.
- 22:14Speaker 10: And he never will.
- 22:15Speaker 5: But he loves me, Pop. I know it. And I'll
- 22:18Speaker 5: let you in on a little secret. A man can always...
- 22:20Speaker 5: A woman can always tell when a man's going to propose.
- 22:22Speaker 11: You mean woman's instinct. Judas Priest, now there's a real
- 22:26Speaker 11: piece of idiocy.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Goodbye.
- 22:27Speaker 11: Woman's instinct.
- 22:28Speaker 5: Goodbye, darling. I've got to go to work. So long, Pop. Now,
- 22:31Speaker 5: don't worry about it. I'll take care of myself.
- 22:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:36Speaker 10: Take care of yourself. By Judas Priest, you're going to
- 22:41Speaker 10: break your heart.
- 22:44Speaker 13: You're in the office.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Already, Wynn? That's not like you.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Morning, darling.
- 22:56Speaker 5: What's the matter?
- 22:58Speaker 4: You ever heard of a thing like the Depression?
- 22:59Speaker 5: Yes, isn't it disgusting? It always comes around when people
- 23:02Speaker 5: are so broke.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Well, it's here, right here in this office. Our little
- 23:06Speaker 4: magazine's folding up Saturday.
- 23:07Speaker 5: Oh, Wynn.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Your boss is a flop.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Well, don't say that, darling, because it's not true. Well,
- 23:12Speaker 5: sit down and tell me about it.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Ah, there's not much to tell. I got the idea
- 23:16Speaker 4: for this rag because, well, I didn't like following the
- 23:19Speaker 4: family in the groove. I still do. I thought this
- 23:22Speaker 4: might be the answer if I could swing it, but
- 23:24Speaker 4: I couldn't.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Oh, now, listen to me, Wynn. I don't like this
- 23:28Speaker 5: flop stuff from you. You're a nice big boy with
- 23:30Speaker 5: the right number of arms and hands and legs and
- 23:31Speaker 5: plenty of brains, and you needn't expect me to break
- 23:34Speaker 5: into tears over the first little setback you get.
- 23:37Speaker 4: But don't you see I'm... I'm washed up.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Wynne Strafford, if you talk like that again, I give
- 23:41Speaker 5: you my word, I'll pop you right in the nose. Oh,
- 23:43Speaker 5: you're different, Wynne. You're going somewhere.
- 23:47Speaker 4: What about you? Me? What will you do?
- 23:51Speaker 8: Oh, that's right.
- 23:52Speaker 5: I'm out of a job. I'd forgotten about that. Well,
- 23:56Speaker 5: I might get one in New York. A friend of
- 23:58Speaker 5: mine lives up there.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I can't let you do that. Why not? Because it's
- 24:03Speaker 4: just silly, that's all. Bye. Besides, we'd be too far apart.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Well, it isn't China.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Kitty, this is kind of delicate, but.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Yeah, go on.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Your father's pretty sick. You're all alone, and it's too
- 24:17Speaker 4: much for you to handle. What I mean is I
- 24:20Speaker 4: feel I'm kind of responsible. So, well, until you can
- 24:24Speaker 4: get another job, boy, you won't have to worry about money.
- 24:28Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 24:29Speaker 4: I'll just keep you on the payroll. It's only fair,
- 24:32Speaker 4: you know, because I....
- 24:38Speaker 5: I'm free white and 21. Almost. And I'll love you
- 24:43Speaker 5: from here on out. Until I stop loving you. But
- 24:48Speaker 5: nobody owes a thing to Kitty Foyle. Except Kitty Foyle. Well,
- 25:09Speaker 5: I'm home, Pop. I guess you win. It was just
- 25:16Speaker 5: like you said, Pop. One of us couldn't make the grade.
- 25:23Speaker 8: Pop.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Pop, do you hear me? Are you asleep? Pop.
- 25:32Speaker 11: Pop.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Pop, wake up!
- 25:35Speaker 4: Pop! Oh, Pop!
- 25:52Speaker 3: Mr.
- 25:52Speaker 2: DeMille brings us Act II of Kitty Foyle, starring Ginger Rogers,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Dennis Morgan, and James Craig, in just a moment. And now,
- 26:00Speaker 2: Lou Silvers is going to illustrate for us one fact
- 26:02Speaker 2: about New Quick Luxe Flakes. See if you can guess
- 26:05Speaker 2: what it is. Thanks a lot, Lou, for playing that
- 26:15Speaker 2: familiar tune two different ways. First, very slowly, then three
- 26:19Speaker 2: times as fast. You see, that's a way of telling
- 26:22Speaker 2: our audience one difference between New Quick Lux and other
- 26:26Speaker 2: leading soaps. In water as cool as your hand, it
- 26:30Speaker 2: dissolves three times as fast as any of ten other
- 26:33Speaker 2: leading soaps tested Not just twice as fast, three times
- 26:37Speaker 2: as fast. Yes, and that's not all. New Quick Lux
- 26:40Speaker 2: is thrifty, too. Gives such rich, abundant suds that a
- 26:45Speaker 2: little goes a long, long way. And of course, it's
- 26:48Speaker 2: pure and gentle. Has no harmful alkali to fade colors
- 26:52Speaker 2: or hurt fabrics. It's safe for anything safe in water alone. Speed, thrift,
- 26:59Speaker 2: and safety are three good reasons why New Quick Lux
- 27:03Speaker 2: is America's favorite care for nice things. Why twice as
- 27:07Speaker 2: many women use Lux for pretty washables as use any
- 27:10Speaker 2: other flakes, chips, or beads. Be sure to keep a
- 27:14Speaker 2: big box handy all the time to keep your nice
- 27:17Speaker 2: things lovely longer. Quick, thrifty, Lux way. We pause now
- 27:24Speaker 2: for station identification. This is the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 27:36Speaker 13: Act II of Kitty Foyle, starring Ginger Rogers as Kitty Foyle,
- 27:41Speaker 13: Dennis Morgan as Wynne, and James Craig as Mark.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Kitty Foyle has told Wynn Strafford that she will sail
- 28:09Speaker 2: with him to South America. In her hotel room, as
- 28:12Speaker 2: she packs her grips, the voice of her conscience will
- 28:15Speaker 2: not be still. It bites deep into her soul, reviewing
- 28:20Speaker 2: her life up to this moment.
- 28:24Speaker 5: After Pop died, it was goodbye to Philadelphia and all
- 28:27Speaker 5: that part of your life. And why New York? All right, kid,
- 28:31Speaker 5: let's face it. It was because New York reminded you
- 28:34Speaker 5: of Wynn. You hoped he'd come and find you. That
- 28:38Speaker 5: was when you started to work for Delphine Detaille selling
- 28:40Speaker 5: seductive perfumes to fat women. Then came the day when
- 28:44Speaker 5: you punched a button that was supposed to ring the
- 28:45Speaker 5: stock room, remember? How did you know it was the
- 28:48Speaker 5: fire alarm? Oh, my gosh, I guess I did something wrong.
- 28:54Speaker 4: You said it, sister. Well, do what I do. You
- 28:56Speaker 4: don't want to lose your job. Just faint.
- 28:58Speaker 7: Well, here I go, baby.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Oh, she fainted.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Well, get a doctor. Get a doctor.
- 29:11Speaker 8: Miss Delphine, the ambulance is here.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Okay, okay. Where's the patient?
- 29:15Speaker 8: Right over there, doctor, lying on the floor.
- 29:17Speaker 4: What happened to her?
- 29:18Speaker 5: She just fainted.
- 29:19Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Stand back, please.
- 29:22Speaker 11: Mm-hmm.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Pulse normal. Respiration normal. Let's see. Any bones broken?
- 29:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 4: What's the matter? Hurt when I push your ribs?
- 29:30Speaker 5: Hey, lay off, lay off.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Oh, faking, eh?
- 29:33Speaker 5: Yeah, now be a good guy and go away.
- 29:35Speaker 7: I've got just the thing here for what ails you.
- 29:37Speaker 4: A nice long hypo needle.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Listen, you dope there. nothing wrong with me, and I'll
- 29:41Speaker 5: lose my job if they find out I turned in
- 29:42Speaker 5: that fire alarm.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Well, maybe we better talk it over. How about a
- 29:45Speaker 4: date tonight?
- 29:46Speaker 1: No.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Okay, I'll try to inject this needle so it won't
- 29:49Speaker 4: hurt you much.
- 29:50Speaker 5: If you do, I'll scream.
- 29:51Speaker 4: And lose your job?
- 29:52Speaker 5: All right, you win.
- 29:53Speaker 4: It's a date? Yes. Where do you live?
- 29:56Speaker 5: 1622 Rexhill, apartment 317.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Eight o'clock, all right?
- 30:00Speaker 5: It's a little late for dinner, isn't it?
- 30:01Speaker 4: We'll make it eight o'clock, just the same.
- 30:04Speaker 8: If you're right, doctor. Here, here is water. Hold her
- 30:07Speaker 8: head up.
- 30:07Speaker 11: Ah, there.
- 30:09Speaker 8: Now, now, that helped.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Coming.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Good evening.
- 30:12Speaker 13: Good evening.
- 30:27Speaker 4: And how is our little patient this evening?
- 30:29Speaker 5: If you have reference to me, all right.
- 30:31Speaker 4: Oh, I'm fine, too.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Who asked?
- 30:33Speaker 4: Mind if I step in? Thanks. Hmm, I see you've
- 30:36Speaker 4: got your coat on.
- 30:37Speaker 5: And my hat. Shall we go?
- 30:39Speaker 7: You know, once you get to thinking about it, that
- 30:41Speaker 7: was a very funny way we met this afternoon.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Now, wait a minute, Doctor. I agreed to a date,
- 30:45Speaker 5: and I'm going to keep my word. But if you
- 30:46Speaker 5: think I'm going to sit here and join you in
- 30:48Speaker 5: a jolly laugh over that trick of yours, you're on
- 30:50Speaker 5: the wrong trapeze.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Well, I'm sorry.
- 30:52Speaker 7: I just thought we might sit around and reminisce. It's
- 30:54Speaker 7: a nice little place you got here.
- 30:56Speaker 5: Nice place we've got here. I share it with two
- 30:57Speaker 5: other girls.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Oh. In times like these, what could be better?
- 31:01Speaker 5: Oh, pardon me.
- 31:02Speaker 15: I just want to get my cold cream.
- 31:04Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 31:05Speaker 15: I'll be in the bathroom if you want me, Kitty.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Was that one of them?
- 31:08Speaker 5: That's Molly. I'm sorry I forgot to introduce you.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Never give it a second thought, but.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Excuse me, but did you see my orange stick? Oh, Pat,
- 31:15Speaker 5: this is... Oh, here it is. This is Dr., uh, uh,
- 31:18Speaker 5: Miss Day, Dr... How.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Do you do?
- 31:19Speaker 5: Pleased to meet you. Sorry for intruding.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Say, what is this, a gag?
- 31:25Speaker 5: What's the matter?
- 31:26Speaker 7: Well, all of those instruments sticking up out of their hair.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Oh, those are curlers. The girls are just relaxed, that's all.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Well, I've seen better specimens in glass jars.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Well, what's your program, Doctor?
- 31:36Speaker 4: Well, you like to play cards?
- 31:39Speaker 5: No, and besides, we haven't any.
- 31:41Speaker 7: Well, that's a funny thing, but just as chance would
- 31:43Speaker 7: have it, I've got a couple of decks right here
- 31:44Speaker 7: in my pocket.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Now, isn't that a coincidence?
- 31:48Speaker 4: Yes, isn't it? Double solitaire?
- 31:50Speaker 5: Thank you, I just love it.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Well, I win again. Let's see. That's 17 games to three.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Swell coffee.
- 32:08Speaker 5: It's a little too strong. It's been keeping me awake.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Do you mind my asking you something? I thought we
- 32:14Speaker 5: had a date tonight.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Well, what do you think's been going on here for
- 32:17Speaker 4: the last three hours?
- 32:18Speaker 5: Well, for one thing, I've slowly grown to hate you.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Me? But why?
- 32:24Speaker 5: Because I'm hungry. Because I thought you were going to
- 32:26Speaker 5: take me out to dinner.
- 32:28Speaker 4: But how could I when all I got's a dime?
- 32:30Speaker 5: Well, we could go out and spend that.
- 32:35Speaker 4: You've taken an awful beating, haven't you?
- 32:37Speaker 5: You ought to know.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Well, I don't know how to tell you this, but
- 32:41Speaker 4: all of this has been kind of a test.
- 32:43Speaker 5: You mean you were testing me?
- 32:46Speaker 7: Now, don't make it sound so awful. It's just that
- 32:49Speaker 7: the girl I fall for mustn't be a gold digger.
- 32:51Speaker 7: I simply haven't got the.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Dough for it.
- 32:52Speaker 7: So I've always told myself I'd never fall for one
- 32:55Speaker 7: unless I could get to liking her without spending any money.
- 32:57Speaker 4: That's just for the first evening, understand?
- 32:59Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. Well, then, how did I come out?
- 33:02Speaker 4: Well, uh, you're okay.
- 33:05Speaker 5: I'd like to point out that anything I did to
- 33:07Speaker 5: prove that to you was purely unintentional.
- 33:10Speaker 10: I know that.
- 33:10Speaker 4: But, uh, how about going to the movies Friday night?
- 33:13Speaker 5: Sorry I can't afford it.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Oh, forget that. I'll pay.
- 33:16Speaker 5: Coal oil Johnny, eh?
- 33:18Speaker 4: And a bus, both ways.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Well, I never thought I'd fall for a flashy front,
- 33:23Speaker 5: but okay, it's a date.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Good night.
- 33:25Speaker 5: Good night.
- 33:34Speaker 11: Hurry up, Kitty.
- 33:35Speaker 4: There's a bus coming.
- 33:36Speaker 5: All set. I want him to get a paper. What
- 33:39Speaker 5: do you still.
- 33:39Speaker 15: Buy the Philadelphia paper for?
- 33:41Speaker 16: You haven't been back there for almost a year.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Oh, I just like to keep up with the old town,
- 33:45Speaker 5: I guess. You mean you like to keep up with
- 33:47Speaker 5: the old boyfriend. Molly, look. Philadelphia prepares for annual assembly tonight.
- 33:53Speaker 5: The assembly... Wynne will be there in his shining armor.
- 33:57Speaker 5: And you'll be going out with Mark in his shining stethoscope.
- 34:00Speaker 5: Come on.
- 34:08Speaker 11: What is this?
- 34:09Speaker 5: Don't ask me.
- 34:10Speaker 8: The joint's filled with flowers.
- 34:12Speaker 5: Why, they've been coming in all afternoon. I don't know
- 34:15Speaker 5: who sent them.
- 34:15Speaker 8: Look, there's ten telegrams.
- 34:17Speaker 5: They're all unsigned. It's Wynne. It's Wynn. I know it's Wynn.
- 34:21Speaker 5: The knight himself. Please, kids, please beat it.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Okay, I'll take the bathroom. And I'll take the terrace.
- 34:27Speaker 5: Out of there. Come in.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Hello, darling.
- 34:34Speaker 15: Oh, my.
- 34:35Speaker 5: Wynn.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Kitty.
- 34:37Speaker 5: Oh, Wynn, darling. I just got in and I saw
- 34:39Speaker 5: all these flowers and I just knew... Oh, I knew that... Oh,
- 34:43Speaker 5: how did you find me?
- 34:44Speaker 4: I just followed my heartbeats. Shall I go outside while
- 34:47Speaker 4: you change your dress?
- 34:48Speaker 8: My dress? Yes.
- 34:49Speaker 4: We have a date tonight for the assembly, remember? Only
- 34:51Speaker 4: ours is going to be right here in New York.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Oh, Wayne.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Kitty, I think I forgot to tell you.
- 34:56Speaker 5: Tell me what?
- 34:57Speaker 4: How much I love you.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Well, how much do you love me?
- 35:01Speaker 4: If I said as much as you love me, would
- 35:04Speaker 4: that be enough?
- 35:05Speaker 5: Oh, darling, if that were true, there wouldn't be enough
- 35:08Speaker 5: love left for anyone else in the whole world.
- 35:10Speaker 7: Hey, how much longer do we keep this place open?
- 35:19Speaker 4: Don't ask me. I only lead the orchestra. That guy
- 35:22Speaker 4: over there has rented the joint till 5 a.m. That's
- 35:24Speaker 4: when some dance in Philadelphia ends.
- 35:38Speaker 5: And to think that only 24 hours ago it started
- 35:41Speaker 5: out just like any other old day in the year.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Kitty.
- 35:45Speaker 8: Yes, Winn?
- 35:46Speaker 4: Kitty, I brought something for you. It's just an old ring,
- 35:50Speaker 4: but I'd like you to have it.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Oh, it's pretty. What is it, an heirloom?
- 35:55Speaker 4: It was my great-grandmother's. You see that design? It's a
- 35:59Speaker 4: symbol of eternal life, from her to me and you,
- 36:03Speaker 4: to those that come after us forever. It's our family.
- 36:08Speaker 5: Oh, well, you better put it away, then, if it's
- 36:10Speaker 5: family stuff.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Boys, can you play Tales from the Vienna Woods? Yeah,
- 36:16Speaker 4: but feebly. I don't know why I should need all
- 36:21Speaker 4: this background, but, Kitty, will you marry me?
- 36:25Speaker 5: Oh, Wynne. Will you? No, dear.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Don't you love me? Yes. But you won't marry me.
- 36:35Speaker 4: But why not?
- 36:36Speaker 5: Oh, Wynne, darling, we're happy now, aren't we? I mean, here,
- 36:39Speaker 5: this minute.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Of course we are.
- 36:41Speaker 5: You know why?
- 36:42Speaker 4: Because we love each other. Because we're together.
- 36:45Speaker 5: No, that's not it. It's... Because we're not in Philadelphia.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Now, look, honey, this is no time for bum jokes.
- 36:50Speaker 5: In New York, we're happy. At Pocono, we're happy. In
- 36:53Speaker 5: Seattle and New Orleans and Dallas, Texas, we could be happy,
- 36:56Speaker 5: but not in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, you're Dobby Mill, and
- 37:00Speaker 5: I'm Briscombe Street. We're two addresses, 23 miles and 500
- 37:07Speaker 5: light years apart.
- 37:09Speaker 4: And is that all?
- 37:11Speaker 5: We're the same color, if that's what you mean.
- 37:14Speaker 4: All right, then. It's all fixed. We'll be New Yorkers
- 37:16Speaker 4: from now on, both of us.
- 37:18Speaker 5: Are you kidding, Wynne?
- 37:19Speaker 4: No, darling, I mean it. This is where we'll live,
- 37:22Speaker 4: where we'll be happy.
- 37:24Speaker 5: Oh, I'm happy already. I'm so happy I can't tell
- 37:27Speaker 5: you how much. Oh, kiss me, Wynne. I hope the
- 37:31Speaker 5: alarm doesn't ring for just a little while longer. I
- 37:35Speaker 5: do want life to be beautiful just as it is now.
- 37:53Speaker 5: And so you were married, Mr. and Mrs. Wynwood Strafford VI. Remember,
- 37:57Speaker 5: you read it over and over when Wyn wrote it
- 37:59Speaker 5: on the register of that little hotel in Gretna Green.
- 38:03Speaker 5: There's no use denying it. Those two days were just
- 38:06Speaker 5: about perfect. And then you went back to Philadelphia to
- 38:10Speaker 5: tell Wyn's family.
- 38:14Speaker 4: After you, Mrs.
- 38:14Speaker 10: Strafford.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Good evening, Mr. Strafford. How are you, Harrison? Where's Mother?
- 38:18Speaker 11: You'll find the whole family having tea in the drawing.
- 38:20Speaker 4: Room, sir. Come on, Kitty. Don't let old Uncle Kenneth
- 38:23Speaker 4: scare you. He's an old Quaker banker. Only knows three words.
- 38:27Speaker 4: Thee thou know. Go ahead.
- 38:30Speaker 8: Oh, won't you have some more tea, then?
- 38:32Speaker 5: I'm sure.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Hello, everybody.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Wendy, come in.
- 38:36Speaker 4: You remember Kitty, Mother?
- 38:37Speaker 8: Indeed I do.
- 38:39Speaker 5: It's so nice to see you again, Miss Foyle. Thank you.
- 38:41Speaker 4: You remember my grandmother? Yes. Aunt Jessica, Uncle Edgar and
- 38:44Speaker 4: Uncle Kenneth.
- 38:45Speaker 5: How do you do?
- 38:46Speaker 4: Happy to see thee again, Miss Foyle. The fact is,
- 38:49Speaker 4: the name isn't Foyle anymore. It's Stratford. Kitty and I
- 38:54Speaker 4: have been married. Married? Well, why don't you say something?
- 39:00Speaker 5: Well, you'll have to forgive me, but I just wasn't
- 39:03Speaker 5: prepared for such news. When were you married, dear?
- 39:06Speaker 4: Last Saturday.
- 39:07Speaker 8: But I thought you were going to send her to
- 39:08Speaker 8: school first.
- 39:10Speaker 5: Mother.
- 39:11Speaker 14: My dear, Wynne has already told us how much he
- 39:13Speaker 14: loves you, and we couldn't have been happier for his sake.
- 39:16Speaker 8: But I thought he was going to wait for a year.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Yes, Mother.
- 39:20Speaker 5: You understand, of course, that about everything else, we want
- 39:23Speaker 5: you and Wynne to be happy. That's first and foremost
- 39:26Speaker 5: in all our thoughts. I don't want to seem rude, but...
- 39:29Speaker 5: would somebody mind telling me what you all are driving at? Well,
- 39:32Speaker 5: it's only this, my dear.
- 39:33Speaker 4: I'll tell her, Molly. You see, honey, I promised that
- 39:37Speaker 4: I wouldn't marry you for a year. Mother was going
- 39:39Speaker 4: to take you under her wing and, well, prepare you.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Prepare me for what?
- 39:44Speaker 4: Oh, you know, some school, some good finishing school.
- 39:47Speaker 8: School?
- 39:48Speaker 5: Are you kidding me?
- 39:49Speaker 14: Oh, it needn't be a school, and it can still
- 39:51Speaker 14: be done. Later on, we can have a proper wedding.
- 39:54Speaker 5: And what do you call what we've just done?
- 39:56Speaker 4: A rehearsal? Now, wait a minute, Kitty.
- 39:58Speaker 8: Doesn't she want to go to school?
- 40:00Speaker 5: School is out, definitely. I'm a big girl now. Wynne
- 40:04Speaker 5: and I are not going to live in Philadelphia. I'm
- 40:06Speaker 5: Griskin Street, and he's Mainline, and we both know it.
- 40:09Speaker 5: In Philadelphia, that's fatal. Anywhere else in the world, it
- 40:12Speaker 5: doesn't make a nickel's worth of difference, and so that's
- 40:14Speaker 5: where we're going to live. Anywhere else in the world.
- 40:16Speaker 5: That's right, isn't it, Wynne?
- 40:18Speaker 4: Of course it is, dear, but it seems to me
- 40:19Speaker 4: we could.
- 40:19Speaker 8: This is all very provoking.
- 40:21Speaker 17: But, Miss Foyle, thou must realize that such a thing
- 40:24Speaker 17: is impossible.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Why?
- 40:26Speaker 17: It happens that the Stratford money is a trust fund
- 40:28Speaker 17: established by family wills. They provide that Wynne, when he
- 40:33Speaker 17: takes unto himself a wife, shall reside in Derby Mill
- 40:36Speaker 17: and assume his duties as an officer of the family bank.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Now, those terms are irrevocable.
- 40:42Speaker 5: And if Wynne refuses?
- 40:43Speaker 17: In that case, his inheritance would pass into the family trust.
- 40:46Speaker 5: So what? So Wynn isn't rich anymore. So what is
- 40:49Speaker 5: that to me? I didn't marry him for his money.
- 40:51Speaker 5: I don't care if he hasn't got a penny.
- 40:53Speaker 4: But, Miss Foyle, thou art not being quite reasonable about this.
- 40:55Speaker 5: Says thou.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Miss Foyle, thy temper. Mr. Kennett, thy foot.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Let's get a few things straight around here. I didn't
- 41:01Speaker 5: ask to marry a Stratford. A Stratford asked to marry me.
- 41:04Speaker 5: I married a man, not an institution or a trust
- 41:06Speaker 5: fund or a bank. Oh, I've got a fine picture
- 41:09Speaker 5: of your family conference here. All the Straffords trying to
- 41:12Speaker 5: figure out how to take the curse off Kitty Foyle,
- 41:14Speaker 5: buy the girl a phony education, and polish off the
- 41:17Speaker 5: rough edges and make a mainline doll out of her. Oh,
- 41:20Speaker 5: you ought to know better than that. It takes six
- 41:23Speaker 5: generations to make a bunch of people like you, and
- 41:25Speaker 5: by Judas Priest, I haven't got that much time.
- 41:29Speaker 13: ¶ ¶.
- 41:44Speaker 3: After a brief intermission, Mr.
- 41:45Speaker 2: DeMille will present Act Three of Kitty Foyle, starring Ginger Rogers,
- 41:49Speaker 2: Dennis Morgan, and James Craig. Now, here's Libby Collins, our
- 41:54Speaker 2: fashion reporter, with a story about a new kind of
- 41:57Speaker 2: fashion show. Say, Libby, that's a very good-looking suit you're wearing.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Thanks, Mr. Ruick.
- 42:03Speaker 16: I think so, too. It's borrowed right out of the
- 42:06Speaker 16: fashion show you mentioned. It's made of Glenclad seersucker. That's cotton,
- 42:10Speaker 16: you know. All the things in the show are cotton.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Well, if they're all as good-looking as that, Libby, they'll.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Get my vote.
- 42:15Speaker 16: I think the clothes in the show will make a
- 42:17Speaker 16: lot of people feel that way, Mr.
- 42:18Speaker 15: Ruick.
- 42:19Speaker 16: Make them realize that cottons today are really fine fabrics,
- 42:23Speaker 16: just like lovely silks and rayons. And, of course, they
- 42:26Speaker 16: shouldn't be washed any old way.
- 42:28Speaker 3: But they can be luxe.
- 42:29Speaker 8: Yes, indeed.
- 42:31Speaker 16: Everything in this style show is cotton and luxeable, from
- 42:34Speaker 16: playdresses to street suits to evening gowns. And they're the
- 42:38Speaker 16: smartest things you could find anywhere, too. They were chosen
- 42:41Speaker 16: by one of the leading fashion magazines, Harper's Bazaar.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Sounds like an exciting show.
- 42:46Speaker 8: It is, Mr.
- 42:46Speaker 11: Bruick.
- 42:47Speaker 16: It's a flying fashion show with a lovely girl from Tennessee,
- 42:51Speaker 16: Miss Alice Beasley, as its star. Miss Beasley was chosen
- 42:54Speaker 16: as the maid of cotton, specially to take the very
- 42:57Speaker 16: latest cotton styles on a 14,000-mile flying fashion tour. She's
- 43:02Speaker 16: stopping off at leading stores all over the country to
- 43:04Speaker 16: model them. And with her goes a luxe fashion expert
- 43:07Speaker 16: to tell women how to keep these smart clothes smart.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Well, I think a lot of people in our audience
- 43:13Speaker 2: would like to know where they can see the show, Libby.
- 43:15Speaker 16: Well, this week the maid of cotton will be in Cleveland,
- 43:17Speaker 16: Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- 43:20Speaker 10: And then?
- 43:20Speaker 16: Then she flies to Memphis, Tennessee for the Cotton Carnival
- 43:23Speaker 16: and then to New York City for National Cotton Week,
- 43:25Speaker 16: which starts May 16th. Newspapers in the cities where she
- 43:28Speaker 16: stops will announce the time and place of the shows.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Thank you, Libby, for a very interesting story.
- 43:34Speaker 2: And ladies, Remember, today's colorful cottons need the same gentle
- 43:39Speaker 2: care that is America's favorite for all nice washables, new
- 43:43Speaker 2: quick luxe flakes. You see, gentle luxe care leaves dresses
- 43:48Speaker 2: fresh and dainty, keeps colors new-looking longer. Anything safe in
- 43:53Speaker 2: water is safe in luxe, you know. So avoid cake
- 43:56Speaker 2: soap rubbing, soaps with harmful alkali. Stick to new quick luxe. Now,
- 44:03Speaker 2: our producer, Mr.
- 44:04Speaker 4: DeMille.
- 44:05Speaker 2: The curtain rises on the third act of Kitty Foyle.
- 44:17Speaker 2: The hands of the clock lift slowly toward twelve, the
- 44:21Speaker 2: hour that Kitty is supposed to meet Wynne at the boat.
- 44:24Speaker 2: But the voice inside her goes on relentlessly, bringing back
- 44:28Speaker 2: all of the past.
- 44:33Speaker 13: Kidding.
- 45:02Speaker 4: It's been a long time since I've seen you. Too long.
- 45:05Speaker 11: Yes.
- 45:07Speaker 4: There's something I want to tell you.
- 45:09Speaker 5: You always show up at the wrong time, Mark.
- 45:12Speaker 11: Why?
- 45:13Speaker 5: You knew I was married. Yes. Well, I'm not anymore.
- 45:18Speaker 5: I got my decree today. Funny. It started out, the
- 45:23Speaker 5: people of this free state send you greetings.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Still love him, Kitty?
- 45:28Speaker 5: I'm afraid so.
- 45:30Speaker 4: What was the matter? Why didn't it turn out better?
- 45:34Speaker 5: I couldn't live his life and he couldn't live mine.
- 45:37Speaker 5: It's simple as that.
- 45:39Speaker 4: Is there any chance for me?
- 45:42Speaker 5: I'm afraid not.
- 45:44Speaker 4: You know I love you, don't you?
- 45:45Speaker 5: Yes.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Well, we could go out to dinner once in a
- 45:49Speaker 4: while and see a show afterwards. I can afford seats
- 45:51Speaker 4: downstairs now.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Mark, I'd like to, but all the time we'd be together,
- 45:56Speaker 5: I'd be thinking of him and You're too nice to
- 45:59Speaker 5: be pushed around, so it's only fair for me to
- 46:01Speaker 5: tell you. I see. Let's say goodbye here, Mark.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Kitty, if there's anything you ever want, well, you know
- 46:12Speaker 4: you can call on me, don't you?
- 46:13Speaker 5: Yes, I know that.
- 46:16Speaker 4: I'm a pretty good doctor, Kitty. But seeing you now,
- 46:21Speaker 4: I wish I'd specialized in heart trouble.
- 46:27Speaker 5: I began to find out about them that there's a
- 46:29Speaker 5: lot of living to do in the world, and if
- 46:31Speaker 5: you're worthwhile, you get hurt. Then there was the day
- 46:35Speaker 5: you went to the doctor.
- 46:36Speaker 10: Come back in about a week, Mrs. Boyle.
- 46:38Speaker 5: You hardly knew if you were glad or sorry. You
- 46:42Speaker 5: went back to Delphine's in a daze.
- 46:46Speaker 8: Oh, Kitty, my dear.
- 46:47Speaker 5: I'm sorry I'm late, Delphine.
- 46:48Speaker 8: Oh, that's all right, my little friend. Only there was
- 46:50Speaker 8: a long-distance call for you.
- 46:52Speaker 5: Really?
- 46:53Speaker 8: Just a few minutes ago. Call Philadelphia, Operator 12.
- 46:56Speaker 5: It's Wynne.
- 46:59Speaker 8: Kitty, you're so excited.
- 47:00Speaker 11: Hello.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Operator 12, please. How long ago?
- 47:03Speaker 4: Hello.
- 47:04Speaker 5: Did you have a Philadelphia call for Miss Foyle? Oh,
- 47:06Speaker 5: thank you.
- 47:07Speaker 6: It is Wynne.
- 47:08Speaker 5: It must be Wynne.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Hello.
- 47:11Speaker 5: Who is it? Oh, Wynne. Yes, Wynne.
- 47:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Of course we can have a talk.
- 47:20Speaker 10: Where?
- 47:20Speaker 13: Uh-huh.
- 47:22Speaker 5: 5.30 at Giono's. I'll be there. Goodbye. Oh, I'll be there.
- 47:28Speaker 8: Is everything all right? Oh, yes.
- 47:31Speaker 5: Oh, I'm awfully sorry I was late, Delphine, but I
- 47:33Speaker 5: had to go to the doctor's office.
- 47:35Speaker 10: Are you ill?
- 47:36Speaker 5: No.
- 47:37Speaker 8: Then what's the matter?
- 47:39Speaker 5: Well, when I left his office, he called me Mrs. Foyle. Oh,
- 47:43Speaker 5: my dear.
- 47:44Speaker 8: Can I help you?
- 47:45Speaker 5: No, it's all right, Delphine, because don't you see, when called.
- 47:49Speaker 8: But did you tell him? Does he know?
- 47:50Speaker 5: Oh, of course he knows. I mean, of course he
- 47:53Speaker 5: doesn't know. But he called me, and I'm going to
- 47:56Speaker 5: see him this afternoon. Oh, this is just what he needed.
- 48:00Speaker 5: It's just what I needed, too. Me and Wynne and
- 48:04Speaker 5: something to fight for.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Good afternoon, Miss Foyle.
- 48:16Speaker 5: Hello, Giono. Mr.
- 48:17Speaker 9: Straffer, he call, he say strega, one bottle and two glasses.
- 48:21Speaker 5: I think I'll have milk.
- 48:23Speaker 4: Milk?
- 48:23Speaker 11: Yes.
- 48:24Speaker 4: But when you have a good strega, why should you
- 48:26Speaker 4: want milk?
- 48:27Speaker 5: Well, I don't want him growing up to be a dipsomaniac.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Do I? Beg your pardon?
- 48:30Speaker 5: Just milk.
- 48:31Speaker 4: All right, milk.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Giono.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 48:34Speaker 5: Grade A milk. That's when you saw the newspaper. It
- 48:41Speaker 5: was lying on the table. Mr.
- 48:43Speaker 9: And Mrs.
- 48:43Speaker 5: Joyce Gladwin announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Veronica Gladwin,
- 48:47Speaker 5: to Mr. Winwood Strafford VI.
- 48:52Speaker 11: When?
- 48:52Speaker 4: Your milk, Miss Foyle.
- 48:54Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry. I don't want it now.
- 48:56Speaker 4: But, Miss Foyle.
- 48:57Speaker 5: No, no, please.
- 48:57Speaker 11: I've got to leave.
- 48:59Speaker 4: But, Mr. Strafford, what am I going to tell him, eh?
- 49:01Speaker 5: Tell him. Tell him that I hope the first one's
- 49:04Speaker 5: a boy.
- 49:06Speaker 13: Kitty, what's.
- 49:15Speaker 10: Wrong?
- 49:16Speaker 8: What is the matter, dear?
- 49:18Speaker 5: Wynne is going to be married again. This time to
- 49:20Speaker 5: somebody who's right for him. Not to me.
- 49:23Speaker 8: Then he doesn't know? You didn't tell him?
- 49:25Speaker 2: No.
- 49:26Speaker 8: Well, obviously somebody must.
- 49:27Speaker 10: No.
- 49:28Speaker 5: No, I wouldn't want it that way. Now he'd feel
- 49:32Speaker 5: gallant and conscientious. There's no happiness for anybody in a
- 49:35Speaker 5: marriage like that.
- 49:36Speaker 8: Well, what are you going to do?
- 49:38Speaker 5: I'm... going to have this baby.
- 49:41Speaker 8: Oh, but Kitty, every child has a right to a name.
- 49:45Speaker 5: He'll have a name. He's Wynn's son. He's legally entitled
- 49:48Speaker 5: to the name of Stratford, but I'll give him a
- 49:51Speaker 5: better name. The doctor called me Mrs. Foyle, so I'll
- 49:57Speaker 5: call the baby Foyle. I'll call him Tom Foyle after
- 50:01Speaker 5: my pop. He'll grow up to be proud of his
- 50:04Speaker 5: name and proud of his mother. And by Judas Priest,
- 50:08Speaker 5: he'll be a fighter too. Hard as a pine nut.
- 50:13Speaker 5: Tom Foyle. The toughest kid in the block. Delphine. Delphine,
- 50:28Speaker 5: is it over?
- 50:30Speaker 8: Yes, dear. It's over.
- 50:33Speaker 5: You don't need to tell me. I know... It's a boy.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Yes, Kitty.
- 50:39Speaker 5: It's the funniest thing you get so dopey. All the
- 50:44Speaker 5: time it seemed I was dreaming that he was drowning
- 50:47Speaker 5: and I was swimming after him, trying to keep his
- 50:51Speaker 5: little head above water. Isn't that funny?
- 50:55Speaker 4: Yes, Kitty.
- 50:57Speaker 5: And then it seemed like I heard him cry. I'll
- 51:01Speaker 5: bet his lungs are awful good, aren't they? He cried
- 51:05Speaker 5: good and loud, didn't he, Delphine?
- 51:07Speaker 8: Yes.
- 51:10Speaker 5: When are they going to let me have him? I
- 51:13Speaker 5: just want to hold him just to make sure he's safe.
- 51:18Speaker 4: Kitty. Delphine.
- 51:21Speaker 5: Delphine.
- 51:23Speaker 8: Please, Kitty, you must rest now.
- 51:25Speaker 5: I don't want to rest. I want my son.
- 51:28Speaker 4: Where is he?
- 51:30Speaker 5: Oh, Delphine.
- 51:32Speaker 6: He isn't Yes. Yes, little one. I had a baby once.
- 51:41Speaker 6: He died, too, before he was born.
- 51:45Speaker 5: Oh, my baby.
- 51:49Speaker 8: Oh, my poor, poor baby.
- 51:58Speaker 5: Time kept on doing business at the same old stand.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Five years of it. Then Delphine sent you down to
- 52:04Speaker 5: Philadelphia to open a branch in that department store. You
- 52:08Speaker 5: were afraid to go. Afraid of all the things it
- 52:10Speaker 5: might bring back. But nothing happened until the afternoon of
- 52:13Speaker 5: your last day. At about half past four.
- 52:18Speaker 12: I'm wearing gold knit over white satin with insertions of
- 52:21Speaker 12: green lace on the skirt. I'm a little worried about
- 52:23Speaker 12: my eyes because, you see, they're green, too.
- 52:26Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. I think a touch more orange in your lip
- 52:28Speaker 5: rouge would bring out the gold in your eyes.
- 52:30Speaker 8: Oh, that's a very good idea.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Hello? Oh, Mrs. Strafford? Oh, that's for me.
- 52:36Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Hello?
- 52:37Speaker 8: Oh, hello, Wynne. Oh, you don't have to go to
- 52:42Speaker 8: New York again, do you?
- 52:43Speaker 9: But.
- 52:45Speaker 12: But, Wynne, in the five years we've been married, we've
- 52:47Speaker 12: never gone to the assembly together.
- 52:49Speaker 15: Mother, are we going to buy a present?
- 52:52Speaker 8: Just a minute, dear.
- 52:54Speaker 5: Well, wait till I get home, then, will you? All right, Wynne.
- 52:57Speaker 5: I'm sorry, but I'll have to leave right away.
- 52:59Speaker 8: Mommy.
- 53:00Speaker 15: Are we going home?
- 53:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 53:02Speaker 15: But you told me I could buy Daddy a birthday present.
- 53:05Speaker 8: We'll get it tomorrow.
- 53:06Speaker 15: I forgot my teddy bear. My teddy bear.
- 53:09Speaker 5: Here it is. I was just going to bring it
- 53:11Speaker 5: to you. Thank you, ma'am. I bet I can tell
- 53:14Speaker 5: you what your name is.
- 53:15Speaker 15: Bet you can't.
- 53:16Speaker 5: It's Wynne Strafford. Wynne Wood Strafford the 7th.
- 53:20Speaker 15: How do you know?
- 53:22Speaker 5: I understand little boys pretty well. You see, I used
- 53:25Speaker 5: to know a little boy once. He'd be just about
- 53:30Speaker 5: your age now.
- 53:31Speaker 15: What was his name?
- 53:33Speaker 5: I think his eyes might have been just like yours.
- 53:36Speaker 15: I've got eyes just like my daddy's, only he's big.
- 53:40Speaker 5: Do you want a birthday present for your daddy very badly?
- 53:43Speaker 15: Oh, yes. He always gives me one.
- 53:45Speaker 5: Well, here's something you can give him. It's a ring,
- 53:50Speaker 5: but it's got to be a secret.
- 53:52Speaker 15: A secret?
- 53:52Speaker 5: Just for your daddy. Now, Shh. Wynne, dear, come along.
- 53:58Speaker 15: I forgot my teddy bear.
- 54:00Speaker 12: Oh, uh, miss, may I have your name? I'd like
- 54:02Speaker 12: to go over this color scheme with you some other time.
- 54:04Speaker 5: I'm sorry. You see, we're not allowed to give out
- 54:07Speaker 5: our names. Oh, I'm sorry. Goodbye. Goodbye, Mrs. Strafford.
- 54:16Speaker 13: There it is.
- 54:18Speaker 5: That's the record up to date. And now you're thinking
- 54:21Speaker 5: of going to South America with Wynne. And Mark's waiting
- 54:24Speaker 5: for you at St. Timothy's. There's not much time, Kitty Foyle.
- 54:30Speaker 5: Make up your mind. Because this is forever. Well, what's
- 54:37Speaker 5: it going to be? Oh, who is it?
- 54:43Speaker 4: Bag's ready, miss.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Oh, come right in.
- 54:46Speaker 10: All set, Miss Foyle?
- 54:47Speaker 5: Yes, those bags over there. Have you the right time?
- 54:49Speaker 4: It's a quarter to twelve.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Oh, thank you. Please take the bags downstairs and call
- 54:53Speaker 5: a cab.
- 54:57Speaker 4: Already, Miss Foyle, I'm sorry to lose you.
- 54:59Speaker 5: Thank you, Joe.
- 55:00Speaker 4: We don't get very many pretty girls here.
- 55:02Speaker 5: Oh, Joe.
- 55:03Speaker 4: Yes?
- 55:03Speaker 5: I think a young man will call for me sometime
- 55:07Speaker 5: after midnight.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Just a minute. I'd better write this down.
- 55:09Speaker 5: He'll be quite excited, I think, and very insistent.
- 55:13Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 55:13Speaker 5: I want you to tell him that I admire him
- 55:17Speaker 5: very much, and I always will.
- 55:20Speaker 4: You admire him very much?
- 55:23Speaker 5: And tell him I'll never forget him.
- 55:27Speaker 4: You will never forget him.
- 55:29Speaker 5: And tell him I'll always love him in a very
- 55:33Speaker 5: special way.
- 55:35Speaker 4: You'll always love him?
- 55:38Speaker 5: And tell him that I'm being married tonight.
- 55:40Speaker 4: You're getting married tonight?
- 55:42Speaker 5: Driver.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Hey, what is this?
- 55:44Speaker 5: Driver, St. Timothy's Hospital, please.
- 55:47Speaker 4: Well, Judas Priest.
- 55:48Speaker 5: Judas Priest.
- 56:00Speaker 4: In a moment, Mr.
- 56:01Speaker 2: DeMille brings back our stars for their curtain calls. Meantime,
- 56:05Speaker 2: Sally the Little Rascal made me a bet last week.
- 56:07Speaker 8: Yes, I bet Mr.
- 56:08Speaker 5: Ruick that he couldn't write a last line for a limerick.
- 56:11Speaker 5: Here it is.
- 56:12Speaker 4: When Sue got a run in her stocking, Betty explained
- 56:16Speaker 4: it is shocking the way that you rub your hose
- 56:18Speaker 4: in a tub.
- 56:19Speaker 3: No stocking can take such hard knocking.
- 56:22Speaker 4: A pretty good rhyme.
- 56:23Speaker 3: And at the same time... Oh, my.
- 56:26Speaker 5: Advice that no girl should be mocking.
- 56:28Speaker 3: She's wise if she ducks.
- 56:30Speaker 5: With fast, gentle luck.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Continual runs in her stocking.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Well, seriously, that is just what stocking experts themselves, the
- 56:38Speaker 2: makers of lovely silk and nylon hosiery, recommend.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Luxe flakes. Listen to this significant fact.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Over 90%, specifically 721 out of the 783 makers of
- 56:50Speaker 2: stockings in the United States, recommend Luxe. And women's own
- 56:54Speaker 2: experience backs them up. Because new quick-lux flakes have become
- 56:58Speaker 2: America's favorite care for stockings the country over. Why? First,
- 57:04Speaker 2: they're so gentle. They save the elasticity that makes stockings
- 57:08Speaker 2: fit and wear. Second, they're faster. You get suds in
- 57:12Speaker 2: a flash, and that saves you time. Third, new quick-lux
- 57:17Speaker 2: is thrifty. A little goes so far, gives such suds
- 57:21Speaker 2: even in hard water. New Quick Lux comes in the
- 57:25Speaker 2: same familiar package, costs you no more, and what good
- 57:29Speaker 2: service it will help you get from lovely stockings.
- 57:33Speaker 3: Now, here's Mr. DeMille and our stars.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Radio, alas, has not yet established its equivalent of an
- 57:39Speaker 2: Academy Award. If it had, we'd present it right now
- 57:42Speaker 2: to Ginger Rogers, as she returns to the microphone with
- 57:45Speaker 2: Dennis Morgan and James Crake.
- 57:47Speaker 5: Thank you, Mr. DeMille, but I think any medals that
- 57:49Speaker 5: are knocking around should be pinned on Miss Kitty Foyle herself.
- 57:52Speaker 4: What would you suggest looking for, Ginger?
- 57:54Speaker 5: Well, any large office building in any American city would
- 57:56Speaker 5: do it, Dennis.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Well, that's a pretty big order, Ginger.
- 57:59Speaker 5: Well, I think you'd find several million girls like Kitty Foyle, Jim.
- 58:02Speaker 5: They have their own brand of courage and don't ask
- 58:04Speaker 5: favors from anybody.
- 58:05Speaker 2: From our mail, I should judge that a high percentage
- 58:08Speaker 2: of them are regular members of this audience and that
- 58:11Speaker 2: they've all been asking for Kitty Foyle.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Ginger, you've played just about every kind of part an
- 58:15Speaker 4: actress can play on the screen. From dancing to drama.
- 58:18Speaker 4: What's it going to be next?
- 58:19Speaker 5: Well, it's a comedy called Tom, Dick, and Harry.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Can't you get Dennis, Jim, and Cecil in that?
- 58:24Speaker 4: It's too late, Mr.
- 58:26Speaker 8: DeMille.
- 58:26Speaker 5: We've just finished making it at RKO.
- 58:29Speaker 4: What about next Monday night, Mr. DeMille?
- 58:31Speaker 2: You got a play yet? I should say we have
- 58:33Speaker 2: got a play. A play that won the Pulitzer Prize
- 58:36Speaker 2: on Broadway and later became a motion picture hit.
- 58:39Speaker 3: It's Craig's Wife.
- 58:41Speaker 2: And our stars will be Rosalind Russell and Herbert Marshall.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Craig's Wife is a sharp, dramatic story of a woman
- 58:48Speaker 2: who was a little late in discovering the importance of love.
- 58:53Speaker 2: A story that demands fine acting. And that's why we're
- 58:56Speaker 2: presenting Rosalind Russell and Herbert Marshall at this microphone next
- 58:59Speaker 2: Monday night.
- 59:00Speaker 5: It's a fine play, Mr. DeMille, and I, for one,
- 59:02Speaker 5: will be right by my radio next week. Good night.
- 59:05Speaker 4: Good night.
- 59:05Speaker 11: Good night.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Good night.
- 59:10Speaker 11: Hear that?
- 59:10Speaker 4: That's the greatest award there is.
- 59:13Speaker 5: The applause of a nation.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Our sponsors, the makers of Lux Flakes, join me in
- 59:22Speaker 2: inviting you to be with us again next Monday night
- 59:25Speaker 2: when the Lux Radio Theater presents Rosalind Russell and Herbert
- 59:29Speaker 2: Marshall in Craig's Wife.
- 59:32Speaker 4: This is Cecil B.
- 59:32Speaker 2: DeMille saying goodnight to you from Hollywood. Dennis Morgan appeared
- 59:49Speaker 2: tonight through the courtesy of Warner Brothers Studio and will
- 59:52Speaker 2: soon be seen in their production of Affectionately Yours. James
- 59:56Speaker 2: Craig is currently making the RKO picture The Devil and
- 59:59Speaker 2: Daniel Webster, produced and directed by William Dieterle. The RKO
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: picture Kitty Foyle was produced by David Hempstead and directed
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: by Sam Wood. Our music is directed by Louis Silvers
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: and your announcer has been Melville Royk. This is the
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: And so concludes Lux Radio Theater's Kitty Foyle. Follow Lux
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Radio Theater for more classic broadcasts.
