Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Treaty Principles Bill part two
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So it looks like the Treaty Principles actors toast as
- 0:03Speaker 1: Christopher Luxen assured it it would be. And much was
- 0:07Speaker 1: made over the weekend that ninety percent of the submissions
- 0:09Speaker 1: were against it. But you know that means nothing at
- 0:12Speaker 1: all if all the opposing submissions were just photocopies of one,
- 0:16Speaker 1: which I think a lot of them were. Remember that
- 0:18Speaker 1: Maori are organized. Anyone who's seen their multiple hikoys and
- 0:22Speaker 1: their awesome organization of the King's tongue, he should know
- 0:25Speaker 1: that you underestimate Malory at your own peril. They got
- 0:28Speaker 1: organized and they swamped the Select Committee. But it must
- 0:32Speaker 1: also be noted that the act that that ax Act,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it was a bit of a simplistic dog in my opinion,
- 0:38Speaker 1: much of it already covered by the Bill of Rights.
- 0:40Speaker 1: At its heart, it was three sentences designed to overthrow
- 0:44Speaker 1: fifty years of legal development. But is the movement against
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Treaty Principles dead? And no? It is not New
- 0:53Speaker 1: Zealand first one to have a crack. Winston Peters, being
- 0:56Speaker 1: the experienced legislator that he is, wants to amend all
- 1:01Speaker 1: the existing Treaty Principles legislation that we already have if
- 1:05Speaker 1: you remember, he ran his election campaign on it, and
- 1:08Speaker 1: it is a smart way to achieve real change because
- 1:11Speaker 1: it's already in the law. You just change the thing.
- 1:13Speaker 1: As we approach the changeover between Peters and Seymour of
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Deputy PM role, Winston will have the time and
- 1:20Speaker 1: the energy to have a crack. So welcome to round
- 1:25Speaker 1: two of the Treaty Principle's debate, a round that has
- 1:29Speaker 1: much more chance to succeed. For more from Early edition
