- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number two and today
- 0:19Speaker 1: on the show, we are back for another episode of
- 0:22Speaker 1: RUT Radio, in which we're getting from the field reports
- 0:24Speaker 1: from hunters all across the country about the latest deer activity,
- 0:28Speaker 1: the progress of the RUT, and the tactics working right now.
- 0:47Speaker 1: All right, and welcome Hugh the Wired Hunts Podcast, brought
- 0:50Speaker 1: to you by As you can tell, this is an
- 0:54Speaker 1: on the road edition. I am driving to a new
- 0:56Speaker 1: spot to hunt, but we are still here for RUT Radio.
- 1:00Speaker 1: We're talking to a bunch of honors across the country
- 1:02Speaker 1: to find out what's happening in the white tail, what's
- 1:04Speaker 1: right now and holding down the fort in our South Dakota,
- 1:07Speaker 1: South Dakota not South Dakota, South Dakota studio. Spencer is
- 1:12Speaker 1: over there. How are you man? I'm doing good, Mark.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I am very excited that it is now November November six,
- 1:19Speaker 1: as Brety cord this and tomorrow November seven, the hunting
- 1:24Speaker 1: will be even better than this today. And I'm going
- 1:26Speaker 1: to reference an article that's gonna be coming out on
- 1:29Speaker 1: Meat Either tomorrow, UM that I wrote called the Best
- 1:32Speaker 1: Day of the white Tail wrote where I talked to
- 1:33Speaker 1: ten big buck experts and the date that was picked
- 1:38Speaker 1: by the majority of them is the favorite is November seven.
- 1:41Speaker 1: So when this episode drops, uh, the hunting is going
- 1:45Speaker 1: to be great, as they all predict, and the majority
- 1:49Speaker 1: of them pick a date between November seven and November ten,
- 1:52Speaker 1: And so we are absolutely in the best time of
- 1:55Speaker 1: year here for a white tail archery hunter. I will
- 1:59Speaker 1: not just agree with that. It is that, man, It's
- 2:03Speaker 1: what we've been waiting for. Me last week, I know
- 2:04Speaker 1: we were talking about it being on our doorstep, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: now it is actually here. And Um, from everything I'm
- 2:10Speaker 1: hearing across the country, there's been a lot of action.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I've been seeing some action. UM. So this is my
- 2:17Speaker 1: kind of report week. I like it so on a
- 2:20Speaker 1: one to ten scale, I'm gonna give it like a
- 2:23Speaker 1: seven or eight probably. UM. Maybe a few days ago
- 2:28Speaker 1: I were told you eight. Maybe by today I would
- 2:30Speaker 1: tell you it's dropped down to a seventh. UM. Earlier
- 2:34Speaker 1: this week in over the weekend was seeing a lot
- 2:38Speaker 1: of chasing. UM. A lot of young young bucks all
- 2:42Speaker 1: over the place chasing. And then um, I did see
- 2:45Speaker 1: there's one mature bubble several three year olds, so in Michigan,
- 2:48Speaker 1: that's a kind of mature box. Um, so three year
- 2:51Speaker 1: olds running all over the place. And then one five
- 2:53Speaker 1: and a half year odbluck that I've been seeing that
- 2:56Speaker 1: has been chasing does too. But the biggest thing has
- 3:00Speaker 1: been doing over the last six days, he's been most
- 3:02Speaker 1: of that time been locked onto a dough. So I
- 3:06Speaker 1: actually saw this buck breed dough right in front of me. So, um,
- 3:11Speaker 1: there's definitely some of that happening in the woods here
- 3:14Speaker 1: in Michigan. And the last day or two a lot
- 3:16Speaker 1: of my friends have been kind of experiencing the same thing,
- 3:19Speaker 1: almost locked down type of conditions, and that they're not
- 3:22Speaker 1: seeing the many deer just today and yesterday. Um. Now,
- 3:26Speaker 1: of course, this is just based on anecdotal, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: observations and a few people. So I'm sure there's other
- 3:31Speaker 1: people that are seeing all sorts of seeking and chasing
- 3:33Speaker 1: and craziness like that. Um, But just me and a
- 3:37Speaker 1: handful of folks, it seemed like I was seeing that
- 3:39Speaker 1: on the second, third, fourth, and the last couple of
- 3:43Speaker 1: days of slow just a bit, but um, but still
- 3:46Speaker 1: it's it's exciting stuff. Are you seeing anything similar to that? Yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I was seeing really great movement like starting in the October,
- 3:57Speaker 1: like late October twenties through a few days ago. Now
- 4:00Speaker 1: the movement has still been solid these last few days,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but I don't think it was has been as good
- 4:05Speaker 1: as what it was like five days ago, seven days ago.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Now I'm hesitant to say that's like the best hunting
- 4:13Speaker 1: is behind us, or that this is an early rutt.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We do need to acknowledge that the rutting moon was
- 4:19Speaker 1: October twenty four this year, which calls for an earlier ruts. Um.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And I think that's something will take a look at
- 4:27Speaker 1: at the end of the season here Mark when we
- 4:28Speaker 1: do our recap episode, because um, some early signs here
- 4:32Speaker 1: are showing that maybe the rut was a little bit
- 4:35Speaker 1: sooner this year, or the maybe not the rut, but
- 4:38Speaker 1: the best rutting movement, uh has been taking place a
- 4:42Speaker 1: little bit earlier than maybe normal. Yeah. I mean, like
- 4:47Speaker 1: you said that around that time frame of the quote
- 4:50Speaker 1: unquote rutting moon, a lot of big gear we're getting shot.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I mean a ton so I don't know if there's
- 4:58Speaker 1: anything to it. You know, we we've kind of talked
- 5:00Speaker 1: about in the past. Interesting theory and you can't argue
- 5:03Speaker 1: with the activity that focus all this year, So it'll
- 5:06Speaker 1: be interesting to see how the rest of the rut progresses.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You know. Another another kind of moon related theory. UM,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Drewies like to talk about how the moon exposes
- 5:16Speaker 1: some of the running activity, daylight ruting activity, and this year,
- 5:20Speaker 1: based off the timing of the moon, they were thinking
- 5:23Speaker 1: that it was going to be more of a trickle
- 5:24Speaker 1: run um, so kind of scattered running movement and UM,
- 5:29Speaker 1: more kind of based around fronts and then slightly better
- 5:33Speaker 1: early time period kind of like what we saw, and
- 5:35Speaker 1: then a little bit slower during the typical best time period,
- 5:38Speaker 1: so let's say the first week of November UM, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: then they were predicting maybe a little bit better than
- 5:44Speaker 1: usual later in the month. UM. So that's another one
- 5:47Speaker 1: those moon ideas that I don't know what to think
- 5:50Speaker 1: about it, but it's kind of interesting. UM. So be
- 5:53Speaker 1: interested to hear with the reports that we get to
- 5:55Speaker 1: this week, so that if they're all seeing something kind
- 5:57Speaker 1: of similar to you and me UM or not. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 1: definitely something that, like I said, I think we'll revisit
- 6:03Speaker 1: at the end of the year when we recap season.
- 6:07Speaker 1: But on this week's episode we have Michael hans Sucker
- 6:10Speaker 1: from Heartland bow Hunter in Missouri and then in South
- 6:12Speaker 1: Dakota from the Outdoor Forum is Dylan Tramp. Then we
- 6:15Speaker 1: talked to Andrew Maxwell in Alabama from The Southern Outdoorsman,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and then Byron Horton in Ohio from the White Tail
- 6:21Speaker 1: Experience Excellence and anything else we have to cover between
- 6:27Speaker 1: you and me or do you think we should just
- 6:28Speaker 1: get to those uh folks from cross Country? Well, one
- 6:32Speaker 1: thing I want to ask you, Mark and is a
- 6:33Speaker 1: question that on this week's episode I ask all of
- 6:37Speaker 1: our guests, is that what is your ideal ruts set up? Like?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Paint us that picture of this time of year November seven,
- 6:46Speaker 1: where you want to be sitting uh to catch a
- 6:49Speaker 1: mature buck moving moving. So usually my favorite place to
- 6:55Speaker 1: be at this time of year is on the downwind
- 6:57Speaker 1: side of a perfect betting doe betting air, perfect doll
- 7:01Speaker 1: betting area. Um if that downwind side of a doe
- 7:04Speaker 1: betting year, it also happens to be where habitat and
- 7:07Speaker 1: terrain kind of pinch movement into a slightly smaller area too.
- 7:12Speaker 1: That's even better because, like again I think you know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's at the simplest level, when you're hunting the rut,
- 7:16Speaker 1: it's either doe betting areas or pinch points, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: connecting betting years or betting defeating years, because we're just
- 7:23Speaker 1: trying to catch those bucks moving between those dough hotspots. UM.
- 7:26Speaker 1: So if I were to elaborate a little more, let's
- 7:29Speaker 1: say we got a let's say it's like a big
- 7:32Speaker 1: brushy field. I really love spots where you can see
- 7:36Speaker 1: during the rut as well. And this is very dependent
- 7:38Speaker 1: on the areas you're at. But if you've got kind
- 7:40Speaker 1: of betting here, that's like, let's call it the big
- 7:42Speaker 1: crp field, maybe scattered feeders around it, um, some scrubby
- 7:46Speaker 1: brush it's it's a doe betting area, but it's also
- 7:49Speaker 1: the kind of area that you can sit on the
- 7:50Speaker 1: edge of it and see a bunch of it. That's
- 7:53Speaker 1: awesome to me because you get the benefit of being
- 7:55Speaker 1: on the downloads of a doe betting area, but then
- 7:57Speaker 1: you also get the added benefit of being able to
- 7:59Speaker 1: see bucks moving in and around it, and then you
- 8:02Speaker 1: can call, and at this time of year, calling works
- 8:04Speaker 1: better than any other time in the year in my opinion.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So that's kind of an ideal setup. I'd love to be,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you know, maybe on the edge of that CRP seater
- 8:12Speaker 1: brushy field. Um. Let's say in a perfect world that
- 8:15Speaker 1: I also have like a steep ravine behind me, or
- 8:19Speaker 1: a creek or a river behind me, so my wind
- 8:21Speaker 1: is blowing back over a barrier that the deer aren't
- 8:25Speaker 1: gonna be crossing, so they're not gonna win me. I
- 8:27Speaker 1: can see this whole area, but any buck that wants
- 8:30Speaker 1: to smell that still betting area is going to come
- 8:33Speaker 1: in between me and that you know, betting area, but
- 8:36Speaker 1: that river is going to force them to be in
- 8:37Speaker 1: front of me. Um, that would be a perfect scenario.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I can't tell you I've found that perfect scenario all
- 8:43Speaker 1: that many times. Um, but that's the kind of thing
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm looking for at least. Yeah, I would agree with
- 8:49Speaker 1: you that betting is key to look for and having
- 8:52Speaker 1: those funnels or pinch points. Uh. You know, largely, if
- 8:56Speaker 1: I was picking out a place to hunt for this
- 8:59Speaker 1: week with a bow, I'd be looking for someplace that's
- 9:02Speaker 1: been unpressured uh, you know, unpressured from yourself making sure
- 9:06Speaker 1: others haven't been in there. If you were on public
- 9:09Speaker 1: land looking for those places that people have not been,
- 9:11Speaker 1: so those deer are as comfortable as possible. Hopefully you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: you've been saving a spot for early November like this,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and that's something you could take advantage of right now. Yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and then to go with that, just pinch points and
- 9:26Speaker 1: funnels and probably worrying less about food sources. You know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: maybe traveling to food but not actually sitting on food.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And then uh, you know, you can look for sign,
- 9:39Speaker 1: but I think at this point a lot of this
- 9:40Speaker 1: sign has gone cold, so that's not necessarily something that
- 9:45Speaker 1: you need to be like, oh I have to find
- 9:47Speaker 1: a scrape line to sit on. Yeah. Yeah, at this point,
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's just fine. I mean, if you really want to
- 9:53Speaker 1: keep it simple, find the does. That's kind of the
- 9:56Speaker 1: name of the game. Everything revolves around that. And then
- 9:59Speaker 1: just putting in the time. I mean, if if you're
- 10:01Speaker 1: if you're in those areas, a bucks gonna be checking
- 10:04Speaker 1: for does. If you spend enough time there and make
- 10:07Speaker 1: sure you're hunting it smart, something's gonna happen. It's just
- 10:10Speaker 1: a matter of being able to grind it out absolutely,
- 10:14Speaker 1: all right, Mark, well, good luck with your rutcation here
- 10:18Speaker 1: coming up in Michigan. But let's get to our verse color.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I'm good man, thank you, and good luck you too.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Before we get to our first update, though, let's pause
- 10:25Speaker 1: for a word from our sponsors at white Tail Properties.
- 10:29Speaker 1: This week with white Tail Properties, we are joined by
- 10:31Speaker 1: Dave Skinner, a land specialist out of Kentucky, and Davey
- 10:35Speaker 1: is going to be telling us about what to look
- 10:36Speaker 1: for when buying a property with intentions of early season
- 10:40Speaker 1: white tail hunting. Yeah. Like Kentucky, our season comes in
- 10:43Speaker 1: on September. And if you're looking specifically for that early
- 10:47Speaker 1: season hunt, there's a couple of things. Keep them on one.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Just like late season food sources are keen um. And
- 10:53Speaker 1: there's two food sources in Kentucky that trump everything else
- 10:56Speaker 1: in September, soy beans and acorns. Um. If I'm looking
- 11:01Speaker 1: to hunt specifically that early season, I want to make
- 11:03Speaker 1: certain I either have slay things on the property or
- 11:06Speaker 1: Jason to the property. More than anything, though ecorns are
- 11:09Speaker 1: always number one, I want to know that there's white
- 11:11Speaker 1: oak trees on the property. Um. We those one of
- 11:15Speaker 1: those eight wards are following. That's where the zeal will be.
- 11:19Speaker 1: If you'd like to learn more and to see the
- 11:20Speaker 1: properties that Dave currently has listed for sale, visit whitetail
- 11:24Speaker 1: properties dot com. Backslash skinner that's s K I N
- 11:29Speaker 1: N E R alright and Enjoining us on the line
- 11:32Speaker 1: next is Mike han Sucker from Heartland bow Hunter in Missouri. Now,
- 11:36Speaker 1: Mike in Missouri. What would you say the Buck activities
- 11:38Speaker 1: been lately? On a scale of one to ten, it's
- 11:42Speaker 1: been pretty good. Um Man, I'm probably I say eight, uh, yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 1: something the ruts obviously just you know, I'm getting kicking
- 11:49Speaker 1: and going and um. The past you know, several days,
- 11:53Speaker 1: four or five, six days, we've seen uh several of
- 11:56Speaker 1: our target bucks five and a half year old bucks,
- 11:59Speaker 1: and um, you know, we just haven't had the luck
- 12:01Speaker 1: on our side they come together. But we've been seeing
- 12:04Speaker 1: them and have a lot of close closing couters, close calls. Um,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you know, they're out chasing looking, you know, trying to
- 12:11Speaker 1: find those first dose coming in the heat. Mike, tell
- 12:14Speaker 1: me a little bit about what your ideal rot setup is,
- 12:18Speaker 1: a little bit about what the kind of things you're
- 12:20Speaker 1: looking for this time of year and where your tree
- 12:22Speaker 1: Stanny's place, hoping to catch them with your buck. Honestly,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I kind of bounced around. Um, I love honey with
- 12:28Speaker 1: the decoy, and especially this this time of year when
- 12:31Speaker 1: you know the bucks are getting real territorial and like
- 12:34Speaker 1: you know, looking for that first though coming in the heat.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Like I love being in a position to where you
- 12:39Speaker 1: can see a long way, you can call and you
- 12:41Speaker 1: can have a decoy out. Um. If I can't do that,
- 12:44Speaker 1: my my, you next best thing is going to be,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you know, somewhere tight in Noptember, close to bedding to
- 12:51Speaker 1: where um, you know you're you're gonna be in the
- 12:53Speaker 1: action because you know, food plots and you know feeders
- 12:58Speaker 1: and that type of stuff, like that's all dead this
- 13:00Speaker 1: time of year. Like the deer aren't. They don't care
- 13:03Speaker 1: about the food. They're not they're not focused on that.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But dose are getting harassed that are in the food plots,
- 13:08Speaker 1: that are you know, at the feeders, they're getting messed with,
- 13:11Speaker 1: so they're in hiding and so um, you know, it
- 13:13Speaker 1: kind of just takes all that off the table. Tell
- 13:16Speaker 1: me a little bit about your decoy strategy. If it's
- 13:19Speaker 1: a bucker dough and what their posture is. Like I've
- 13:23Speaker 1: actually only really done a buck decoy, um, and you
- 13:27Speaker 1: know I've I've literally like this. The other day, I
- 13:29Speaker 1: was like, you know, what a doughty quo would be
- 13:31Speaker 1: great because one of our uh bucks that we were
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, targeting, actually came out and we called to
- 13:38Speaker 1: him and he was on a string coming to us,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and he looks over to the right and all of
- 13:42Speaker 1: a sudden, dough over to the right and he sees
- 13:44Speaker 1: her in his bolts right to her. And so I
- 13:46Speaker 1: was like, man, like, you know, maybe a doughty coy
- 13:49Speaker 1: would work working actually, but I haven't messed them too much.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But the buck decoy, you know, like it works. Have
- 13:55Speaker 1: I found it to work with? You know, all sorts
- 13:58Speaker 1: of ages hate class of bucks, and so you know,
- 14:00Speaker 1: typically we're gonna, um, you know, set it depending on
- 14:04Speaker 1: the win and how things go. And we put it
- 14:06Speaker 1: out twenty third yards in front of us and um
- 14:09Speaker 1: in a high visibility areas where you gonna see you know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: deer and be able to call to them get their
- 14:13Speaker 1: attention in the lock m dego in I've got some
- 14:15Speaker 1: pretty good luck over the past few years, and um,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it's I mean, I'm telling you there's no more exciting
- 14:20Speaker 1: way to hunting white tales and with a pego. And
- 14:23Speaker 1: are you doing one antler or two antlers? And are
- 14:26Speaker 1: you changing the years at all to uh maybe adjust
- 14:30Speaker 1: their posture. Yeah, so we I'm using the DFD buck decoy,
- 14:35Speaker 1: which is UM by design aggressive postures years laid back.
- 14:39Speaker 1: One or two antlers, just depends on if one falls
- 14:41Speaker 1: out when I'm walking in and out. But uh, you
- 14:45Speaker 1: know it's, UM, it's a respectable hunter five inch eight pointer,
- 14:49Speaker 1: so you know, nice buck, and UM I've done in
- 14:52Speaker 1: both ways. You know, I'm like, if I lose an
- 14:54Speaker 1: antler or whatever falls off, or I don't have both
- 14:56Speaker 1: of them, I'm like, yeah, whatever, it's you know, a
- 15:00Speaker 1: in the matter too much. I mean, some of the
- 15:01Speaker 1: smaller bucks obviously maybe not get super aggressive with it.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But you know, when you get a big, dominent, mature
- 15:07Speaker 1: deer that seem a degal, it doesn't matter if he's
- 15:10Speaker 1: got both sides and not, he's coming after him. I
- 15:12Speaker 1: know you run a lot of trail cameras on your farm.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Do those give you any valuable until this time of year?
- 15:18Speaker 1: Or are you hunting the areas you're gonna be haunting
- 15:21Speaker 1: regardless of what those are telling you. Yeah, they actually do.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And it's funny, I kind of I don't know. I
- 15:26Speaker 1: I try to put too much weight their effort into
- 15:29Speaker 1: the trail camera situation this time of year, but um,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like this year and in
- 15:36Speaker 1: the past couple of years, like you know, you get
- 15:39Speaker 1: to the intel on when a buck is is not
- 15:42Speaker 1: with a dough, and like they get with the dough
- 15:44Speaker 1: and they it seems like on the areas that we're hunting,
- 15:47Speaker 1: you know, high density are high density areas, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 1: the deer are when they get a dough and they
- 15:53Speaker 1: kind of isolate themselves. They kind of locked down and
- 15:55Speaker 1: they try to get, you know, away from everything else.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And when they don't have a dough, they just are
- 16:00Speaker 1: cruising on the loose. And just the other day we
- 16:02Speaker 1: had a hunt where we had I saw two different
- 16:04Speaker 1: five and a half ye old bucks in the same hunt,
- 16:06Speaker 1: both of them literally running around like what a check
- 16:09Speaker 1: with their head cut off, like looking for that next dough.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And so trail cameras can be sued in that aspects.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Is like when you know a buck breaks from a
- 16:17Speaker 1: dough and it's on the loose looking for one, um,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and that's time to get after it. And that's where
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, the use of cellular technology and the cell
- 16:25Speaker 1: cameras has changed things because we don't like to tromp
- 16:28Speaker 1: around this time of year and like check camp and
- 16:30Speaker 1: check a bunch of cameras start to figure stuff out,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you know. But if you're getting on your phone, getting
- 16:34Speaker 1: on your computer and you know, get the intel right there,
- 16:38Speaker 1: then it helps you know when when you're gonna be
- 16:40Speaker 1: freeing up and on the loose. I imagine every fall
- 16:44Speaker 1: you're getting bucks this time of year that you have
- 16:46Speaker 1: never seen before. Has that happened yet this season where
- 16:49Speaker 1: you're finding some mature bucks moving that you've never seen
- 16:52Speaker 1: or maybe have been seen since the summer. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Um it kind of throughout the year there's this you know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: deer moving in, deer moving out kind of deal. And
- 17:02Speaker 1: it's funny that you know, you really sort of notice
- 17:05Speaker 1: that the morning we running cameras and we gotta keep
- 17:07Speaker 1: tabs on things. You know, some of the deer that
- 17:09Speaker 1: show up like late October every year are are going
- 17:12Speaker 1: up the same you know, four or five days were year,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and so we gotta keep keep taving on and kind
- 17:19Speaker 1: of understand, you know what when deer moving in, when
- 17:22Speaker 1: they're moving out, and we just are you know, strategies
- 17:25Speaker 1: based off of that, because especially if we're gonna have
- 17:27Speaker 1: a deer that usually leaves us and go somewhere else
- 17:30Speaker 1: and then we're gonna target him early season, and or
- 17:32Speaker 1: if we have a deer that's coming in you know,
- 17:35Speaker 1: this time of year, then well we'll kind of hold
- 17:36Speaker 1: off and wait and see what happens. And so, yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 1: it's definitely changed things the way we look at it
- 17:42Speaker 1: going forward. Then in the sixt week or so, what
- 17:44Speaker 1: do you think that bug activity is going to be
- 17:45Speaker 1: on a scale of one to tending Missouri. I don't
- 17:49Speaker 1: know about that the whole next week, but a little
- 17:51Speaker 1: bit tomorrow, Like tomorrow is I'm so excited about tomorrow.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Like we've had just raining, nasty weather and today was good,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but it's super windy, windy, windy all day. So tomorrow
- 18:04Speaker 1: it's gonna be a little calm, cold front coming in.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It's gonna be the cold morning in the past week
- 18:09Speaker 1: or so, it's not more. And uh, I think tomorrow
- 18:13Speaker 1: is gonna be the best day of of the November
- 18:17Speaker 1: and so I don't know how that'll pay out the
- 18:19Speaker 1: rest of the week. Obviously later in the week, I'm
- 18:21Speaker 1: sure that you know, a lot of people are gonna
- 18:23Speaker 1: experience you know, what they call luckdown and um, so
- 18:27Speaker 1: you know you're gonna hit her miss necessarily, but tomorrow
- 18:30Speaker 1: should be awesome. Alright, Mike, I like your optimism and
- 18:34Speaker 1: good luck in Missouri. Thanks for joining me, all right,
- 18:37Speaker 1: thanks alright and joining us on the line. Next is
- 18:39Speaker 1: Dylan Tramp from the Outdoor Forum in South Dakota. Now
- 18:42Speaker 1: Dylan in South Dakota. What would you say the buck
- 18:44Speaker 1: activity has been lately on a scale of one to ten, Man,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I'd have to say it's probably a solid nine. Bucks
- 18:52Speaker 1: have been on their feet pretty much all throughout the
- 18:55Speaker 1: day and things are starting to happen, that's for sure.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And so this time of year, what would be your
- 19:01Speaker 1: ideal set up? Um, what's the kind of area you're
- 19:05Speaker 1: looking forward to kill a mature buck in early November? Well,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I spent most of my time hunting public land, so
- 19:14Speaker 1: key that I will look for is and an unpressured area,
- 19:18Speaker 1: place where I don't expect to see hunters, and then
- 19:20Speaker 1: within that area find a find a good funnel where
- 19:24Speaker 1: it just is naturally going to funnel the movement. If
- 19:27Speaker 1: they're signed any robber scrapes, more the better, But mainly
- 19:30Speaker 1: that funnel is what you're looking for to or from
- 19:33Speaker 1: different betting areas and in just a gateway that you
- 19:36Speaker 1: can most likely intercept the cruise and buck. You mentioned
- 19:40Speaker 1: before that you've been seeing some midday movement. Tell me
- 19:42Speaker 1: a little bit about that. You have the most mature,
- 19:47Speaker 1: the biggest book I've seen so far. He was at
- 19:49Speaker 1: one o'clock and he was already has about well I
- 19:53Speaker 1: think it was November two. He was already on the move,
- 19:56Speaker 1: just cruising looking for those. You can tell he was
- 19:59Speaker 1: on mission. There's been some smaller bucks moving mid day too,
- 20:03Speaker 1: but it's just starting to heat up that it's an
- 20:06Speaker 1: exciting time of the year we all look forward to.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You're talking about signmaking a little bit before. What are
- 20:11Speaker 1: you seeing for robs and scrapes or those still active
- 20:13Speaker 1: or do you think maybe those have gone cold? I
- 20:17Speaker 1: think they're still active. The scrapes that I've sat here
- 20:21Speaker 1: seems to like the little bucks and yearlings are getting
- 20:23Speaker 1: them and freshening them up, and the two and three
- 20:26Speaker 1: year olds that have been walking through. They seem to
- 20:29Speaker 1: just walk right past the scrapes. I don't think they're
- 20:31Speaker 1: so concerned with that right now, they're looking for the
- 20:33Speaker 1: dough and eat. I think, will you do any calling
- 20:36Speaker 1: this time of year? I know you haunted public lands,
- 20:38Speaker 1: so maybe that has you hesitant to do any calling.
- 20:42Speaker 1: But is that something that you use. Yeah, just tonight
- 20:46Speaker 1: I debated that same thing, like, well, I'm sure they've
- 20:49Speaker 1: heard every grunt and rattle rattle packing on the market today,
- 20:53Speaker 1: so I decided not to call the night. But I
- 20:55Speaker 1: always keep the grunt too handy for rock calling. Scenario
- 21:00Speaker 1: that you've got nothing to lose, then I'll whip it out,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but I don't rely too heavily on it. You're in
- 21:04Speaker 1: eastern South Dakota running some trail cameras on public land.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Does that give you any really valuable intel for this
- 21:11Speaker 1: time of year? Or regardless of what your trail camps
- 21:14Speaker 1: tell you, you're gonna be hunting the same areas you'd
- 21:17Speaker 1: be hunting even if they were lit up with giant bucks. Yeah,
- 21:20Speaker 1: that's that's a tough one because my true chemists haven't
- 21:22Speaker 1: been too good this year. But yeah, though, if you've
- 21:25Speaker 1: got them up in all summer. They'll tell you what's
- 21:28Speaker 1: in the area, and things definitely change on public land,
- 21:31Speaker 1: but you can key in on a few good bucks
- 21:34Speaker 1: in the area, then if you likely to figure out
- 21:37Speaker 1: travel corridors, you might just intercept them. Definitely a good
- 21:41Speaker 1: tool even for the public land hunter. But you're gonna
- 21:43Speaker 1: lose wonder for once in a while, just part of
- 21:45Speaker 1: the game. This week in South Dakota, we've been dealing
- 21:49Speaker 1: with a lot of rain, sometimes snow, sometimes freezing rain.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Have you noticed any deer movement being affected by that? Yeah?
- 21:57Speaker 1: I was. I was pleasantly surprised two days of rain
- 22:00Speaker 1: that I said in this week, they're they're moving. Didn't
- 22:03Speaker 1: even I didn't even phase them. I was kind of
- 22:06Speaker 1: hoping the movement below so I could go home and
- 22:08Speaker 1: get drying. But it wasn't the case going forward in
- 22:12Speaker 1: a sixt week or so, what do you think that
- 22:13Speaker 1: bucket activity is going to be on a scale of
- 22:15Speaker 1: one to ten in South Dakota? Solid ten. I mean,
- 22:19Speaker 1: this is this is the time of year we all
- 22:20Speaker 1: wait for. I think the I think everyone talks about
- 22:24Speaker 1: the Bell curve. I think the rut and all the
- 22:28Speaker 1: activities heating up up until I don't know, maybe the
- 22:31Speaker 1: tenth so I think the best is yet to come. Still,
- 22:36Speaker 1: our Dylan, good luck in South Dakota. I hope you're
- 22:38Speaker 1: sending me a big buck down text very soon. Thanks
- 22:41Speaker 1: for joining me, I hope so thanks alright and joining
- 22:45Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Andrew Maxwell and Alabama
- 22:48Speaker 1: from the Southern Outdoorsman. Now, Andrew in Alabama, what would
- 22:52Speaker 1: you say the bucket activity is bent Lateley on a
- 22:54Speaker 1: scale of one to ten, um, I would have to
- 22:58Speaker 1: probably give it a solid five for these last few days. Um.
- 23:03Speaker 1: We had some pretty decent cold temperatures last week and
- 23:07Speaker 1: a lot of deer hit the ground, but as of
- 23:10Speaker 1: last few days, it's been pretty warm, and the activity
- 23:14Speaker 1: that I've been seeing from myself as well as my
- 23:17Speaker 1: buddies and our trail cameras, we're definitely seeing more nighttime movement, um,
- 23:23Speaker 1: especially on the scrapes and everything. We put a lot
- 23:26Speaker 1: of trail cameras on scrapes this time of year, and
- 23:28Speaker 1: pretty much everything has been at night in the last
- 23:31Speaker 1: few days now. While the rest of the country is
- 23:35Speaker 1: talking about seeking and chasing and peak road and lockdown,
- 23:38Speaker 1: that kind of thing. You guys are well behind the schedule.
- 23:41Speaker 1: When it comes to that, what stage is what would
- 23:43Speaker 1: you say that you're part of Alabama is in. I
- 23:47Speaker 1: would definitely say that we're kind of in the later
- 23:50Speaker 1: part of our early season. For the vast majority of Alabamians.
- 23:53Speaker 1: We're probably roughly two months out from the rut. You're
- 23:57Speaker 1: gonna have pockets here and there that run a little
- 23:59Speaker 1: bit earlier than that, but yeah, I mean, we're we're
- 24:03Speaker 1: still a long ways out for the rut. So everything
- 24:06Speaker 1: that we're kind of focusing on right now is definitely
- 24:09Speaker 1: still that like almost like a bed of food pattern.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And we're even still seeing bucks batcheled up in some places.
- 24:16Speaker 1: A little bit earlier, you talked about some scrapes. Are
- 24:18Speaker 1: you seeing a lot of signmaking it or is it
- 24:20Speaker 1: too early for that. It's still pretty early for it,
- 24:25Speaker 1: but I am starting to see rubs here and there,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and once you get in on some good betting, you'll
- 24:31Speaker 1: find some community scrapes opened up. But the vast majority
- 24:35Speaker 1: of of sign making that that we're looking for right
- 24:38Speaker 1: now is definitely just feed sign buck sign. I would
- 24:42Speaker 1: say it's pretty sporadic and not something to necessarily focusing
- 24:46Speaker 1: on right now for us, at least, if I can
- 24:49Speaker 1: find a nice community scrape which I have too located
- 24:52Speaker 1: right now, that is, you know, in very close proximity
- 24:57Speaker 1: to a betting area, like within one yards, I'll definitely
- 25:01Speaker 1: be hunting that. Even though we're way out from the rut.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I run cameras on those kind of scrapes from basically
- 25:07Speaker 1: September until whenever I take it out, which is usually December,
- 25:10Speaker 1: so and they have daylight movement on them pretty much
- 25:14Speaker 1: all season, even though we're still, you know, well over
- 25:17Speaker 1: two months away from the rut. Throughout most of the state,
- 25:19Speaker 1: they're still using those scrapes and communicating. So I'm actually
- 25:23Speaker 1: gonna sit on one tomorrow and hopefully catch a buck
- 25:26Speaker 1: you know, poking out of that bedding area a little
- 25:28Speaker 1: bit before dark check out that scrape before he goes
- 25:31Speaker 1: to feed. You referenced on focusing on bed to food.
- 25:34Speaker 1: What are those food sources that you're checking out right now?
- 25:39Speaker 1: So right now, it's definitely heavily white oaks and red
- 25:42Speaker 1: oaks um as usual, And as far as greens go,
- 25:48Speaker 1: we're we've been seeing a lot of deer feeding on clover,
- 25:50Speaker 1: particularly um. I don't know if asked to do the
- 25:53Speaker 1: warmer temperatures or what, but it seems like clover is
- 25:56Speaker 1: doing good right now. So if you've got clover on
- 25:58Speaker 1: your property, that's probably something good key in on. And
- 26:02Speaker 1: other than that, just natural brows. Um. If you can
- 26:05Speaker 1: find some like poke salad or something that's still still
- 26:08Speaker 1: nice and green, they're eating on that pretty hard as
- 26:10Speaker 1: well as greenbrier. But acorns definitely trump everything right now
- 26:14Speaker 1: for us. Will you hunt any mornings this early in
- 26:17Speaker 1: the season, I've I've found it a few so far. Um,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I don't necessarily like it that much, which is kind
- 26:24Speaker 1: of something I've been changing this year. I've definitely seen
- 26:28Speaker 1: a lot more productivity on my afternoon hunts for sure.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Pretty much every afternoon I'm seeing deer, and mornings just
- 26:37Speaker 1: haven't been very productive. And same thing with all the
- 26:40Speaker 1: guys I know and keep in touch with around the state.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Most everybody's been killing deer in the evenings, specifically bucks
- 26:48Speaker 1: Going forward in the sex week or so, what do
- 26:50Speaker 1: you think that bucket activity is going to be on
- 26:52Speaker 1: a scale of one attend in Alabama? Honestly, I would
- 26:57Speaker 1: say that this Saturday will probably be up they're around
- 27:00Speaker 1: like a nine. We're getting a good rainstorm Friday across
- 27:03Speaker 1: most of the state with a nice cold front pushing in,
- 27:06Speaker 1: and conditions couldn't be any better, especially for those scrapes
- 27:10Speaker 1: that I just mentioned. So I think this weekend will
- 27:12Speaker 1: be really, really good. All right, Andrew, Well, I'm definitely
- 27:16Speaker 1: jealous of the weather you guys have down there, but
- 27:18Speaker 1: I'm happy my part of the country is running, so
- 27:21Speaker 1: good luck in Alabama. Yeah, I appreciate it, Spencer, alright,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and joining us on the line next is Byron Horton
- 27:28Speaker 1: from the White Tail Experience in Ohio. Now, Byron in Ohio,
- 27:32Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lely
- 27:34Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. I would go
- 27:37Speaker 1: with what we've seen over the last couple of days
- 27:39Speaker 1: of solid seven so one. I almost hit a basket
- 27:42Speaker 1: rack driving home from work today, um so so so
- 27:46Speaker 1: that was interesting. And then on on Saturday, we we
- 27:50Speaker 1: had a four point come in, grunning and kind of
- 27:52Speaker 1: pushing around a dough and had two bucks then show up,
- 27:57Speaker 1: oh roughly an hour later. And I don't know if
- 27:59Speaker 1: we witnessed maybe the one of the early days coming in,
- 28:02Speaker 1: so so it was kind of the train of bucks effect,
- 28:05Speaker 1: and we ended up harvesting um one of the bucks
- 28:08Speaker 1: that came in later that day. UM. And then obviously
- 28:12Speaker 1: tonight we we did have a spike bumping some dose
- 28:15Speaker 1: um around. So so definitely the younger bucks, and then
- 28:19Speaker 1: then some of the older class are starting to make
- 28:22Speaker 1: themselves visible and showing their running behavior in a place
- 28:26Speaker 1: like Ohio and hunting public land. Like you guys do,
- 28:30Speaker 1: what is your ideal set up for the rut oh Um,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Sometimes we'll tap into a historically really good spots that
- 28:38Speaker 1: we've got a little more experience with. Obviously, we got
- 28:42Speaker 1: to look at the pressure situation heavily. Um. If we're
- 28:45Speaker 1: seeing how the state guys um coming in, which is
- 28:48Speaker 1: pretty popular to this time of year, we know that
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's a little bit higher caliber of hunter and we
- 28:53Speaker 1: tend to avoid those areas and and maybe either revisit
- 28:56Speaker 1: those real late in November or just write them off completely.
- 28:59Speaker 1: So yeah, pressure is the name of the game right
- 29:01Speaker 1: now for us. We are there any food sources that
- 29:04Speaker 1: you're focusing on specifically or does that kind of go
- 29:07Speaker 1: out the window this time of year. You know, I'm
- 29:09Speaker 1: not too concerned with with food sources this time of year.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I'm I'm keying in a lot more on doe betting, UM,
- 29:16Speaker 1: and and maybe situations where there's still some private land
- 29:19Speaker 1: food and public land bettings. How about with signmaking, are
- 29:22Speaker 1: you still find finding rubs and scrapes that look fresh? Yeah?
- 29:28Speaker 1: I was bouncing around um this weekend and came across
- 29:31Speaker 1: scrapes that were still opened up within the last twenty
- 29:34Speaker 1: four hours easily. UM. I think that's something to watch.
- 29:38Speaker 1: But I wouldn't. I wouldn't be hitting that near as
- 29:40Speaker 1: hard as I would have five to six days ago. UM.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I think you're you're better off to concentrate on those
- 29:47Speaker 1: and terrain type features that funnel them in. Do you
- 29:50Speaker 1: guys use any trail cameras on public land? You know? Yeah,
- 29:54Speaker 1: we currently have some long term soakers. UM. We're also
- 29:57Speaker 1: some pulling a couple of different trail cams that will
- 30:00Speaker 1: set out in midsummer knowing we're gonna hunt an area
- 30:03Speaker 1: and then pull that card and depending on neither number
- 30:07Speaker 1: of shooters or if one good shooters in there, um,
- 30:10Speaker 1: we may bounce around a few of the dough betting
- 30:12Speaker 1: areas we know about in that area. How aggressive are
- 30:15Speaker 1: you with calling obviously hunting public land, that's something that
- 30:20Speaker 1: you have to put a little more consideration into. So
- 30:22Speaker 1: is that a tactic that you'll use. I actually don't
- 30:26Speaker 1: even carry a grunt tube anymore. I I'll snort weed's occasionally,
- 30:30Speaker 1: but I want to be in a particular situation that
- 30:34Speaker 1: I don't need to call it here. I want to
- 30:35Speaker 1: be in a situation where buck's already going to be
- 30:38Speaker 1: be passing through. Um, I just don't see. Definitely no
- 30:42Speaker 1: rattling antlers. Um. But yeah, if I want to make
- 30:45Speaker 1: a grunting noise, I may do it with just a
- 30:48Speaker 1: verbal but nothing nothing crazy. And are there any outside
- 30:52Speaker 1: factors that get you really excited for a specific day
- 30:56Speaker 1: in early November? For example, if we had a cold front,
- 30:59Speaker 1: or if it was really windy or raining, or if
- 31:01Speaker 1: there was a certain moon phase. Is there anything, uh
- 31:04Speaker 1: that gets you more ramped up this time of year
- 31:06Speaker 1: or because it's early November, none of that other stuff
- 31:10Speaker 1: you know? Has you paying any attention to it? Yeah? No,
- 31:13Speaker 1: it's a it's realistically if if you've got time to
- 31:16Speaker 1: hunt right now, Um, it's just a matter of time
- 31:19Speaker 1: and tree at this time of year and weekdays tend
- 31:23Speaker 1: to be a little better on the public lane. I
- 31:24Speaker 1: kind of like weekdays just because you have less people
- 31:27Speaker 1: to compete with going forward. Then this next week or so,
- 31:30Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 31:31Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Ohio?
- 31:35Speaker 1: Oh it's here, man. I think somebody who's gonna put
- 31:38Speaker 1: a couple of sits in this week, they're gonna catch it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And I'm gonna go ahead and predict, you know, nine,
- 31:42Speaker 1: ten out of ten, because this is what you live for, man. Alright,
- 31:46Speaker 1: Byron Will, congrats on that great buck from late October,
- 31:49Speaker 1: and I'm as excited as you are for this week.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Yeah, thanks a lot of Spenser appreciative.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And that concludes this week's episode of Wired Hunt's Radio.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Thanks to Michael, Dylan, Andrew and Broned for joining me,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and thank you guys for listening. As always, make sure
- 32:05Speaker 1: you're following Wired Hunt on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and follow me Spencer new Heart and my blog rut
- 32:11Speaker 1: Fresh on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well. I hope
- 32:15Speaker 1: as you're listening to this that you are either on
- 32:17Speaker 1: your way to a tree stand or coming home from
- 32:19Speaker 1: a tree stand. Because it is that time of year
- 32:21Speaker 1: that we all wait for. The rut is here. There
- 32:24Speaker 1: is no better time to kill a mature buck than
- 32:26Speaker 1: right now. I hope next time that I talked to
- 32:28Speaker 1: you guys, I have a report that includes me killing
- 32:31Speaker 1: one of those big bucks. So send some good thoughts
- 32:34Speaker 1: my way as well, and until then, stay wired to hunt.
