Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New Zealand's increasingly becoming a luxury tourism hot spot. New
- 0:04Speaker 1: Data estimates it generated more than eight million dollars in
- 0:07Speaker 1: revenue last year. By twenty thirty three, that could be
- 0:09Speaker 1: more than doubled eighteen billion dollars. And that's not a
- 0:13Speaker 1: bad chunk of change. James Dolan is the strategic director
- 0:16Speaker 1: of Hotel Council Alter and he joins me Now, good morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: James, morning, pranchaster. How are you good?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey? Why is New Zealand becoming increasingly popular as a
- 0:25Speaker 1: luxury tourism hot spot.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well, look, I think a number of reasons, but first
- 0:30Speaker 2: and foremost, it's a great news story. And we have
- 0:33Speaker 2: a wonderful international standard tourism product, amazing landscapes, wonderful people
- 0:38Speaker 2: are warm, wealth but we're also benefiting from a lot
- 0:42Speaker 2: of global taiale winds and tourism and travel generally as
- 0:47Speaker 2: people get wealthier in parts of Asia and Africa and
- 0:51Speaker 2: India are definitely getting wealthier. As people get wealthier, and
- 0:55Speaker 2: once they get a certain basic level of security, they
- 0:59Speaker 2: want to travel experience the rest of the world. That's
- 1:01Speaker 2: a makely human It's a wonderful thing in New Zealand.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Needs a very small share of the international outbound tourism market,
- 1:10Speaker 2: so it's a great opportunity for us to grow our economy.
- 1:15Speaker 1: James, what type of traveler are we talking about here?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Are we talking about the very wealthy or is it
- 1:21Speaker 1: the average traveler just wanting a high end experience and
- 1:24Speaker 1: you know we've got you favorable exchange rates at the
- 1:28Speaker 1: moment for some overseas tourists.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, that's a great question because a lot of
- 1:33Speaker 2: people get wrong. I mean, I don't know what the
- 1:36Speaker 2: exact term is, but I like that kind of average wealthy,
- 1:40Speaker 2: entry level wealthy. I mean New Zealand geographically, we're a
- 1:44Speaker 2: long way away from the rest of the world. Just
- 1:47Speaker 2: to pay for the air fares to get here. Any
- 1:50Speaker 2: traveler who comes to New Zealand, and that includes the
- 1:52Speaker 2: backpackers obviously, are by international standards, fairly wealthy. But we're
- 1:59Speaker 2: talking of about folks who are pushing the boat out
- 2:02Speaker 2: even more. And if you pay a lot to come
- 2:05Speaker 2: here on the plane, especially by business travel, you are
- 2:10Speaker 2: more likely to push the boat out. At dinner time,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you're more likely to maybe stretch for a helicopter ride
- 2:16Speaker 2: or a high end restaurant and that might be people
- 2:20Speaker 2: as to say, who've really saved very hard, because New
- 2:24Speaker 2: Zealand is for many of them are once and done
- 2:27Speaker 2: or trip of lifetime destination. And that's a great audience
- 2:32Speaker 2: for us to be getting here.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So we've got the helicopters, we know, we have excellent restaurants,
- 2:37Speaker 1: we know we've got fantastic scenery. It's world class. Our
- 2:40Speaker 1: other facilities good enough for those seeking a luxury experience.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Again, a really good question, because when you start attracting
- 2:49Speaker 2: high end travelers, you are attracting discerning travelers. And the
- 2:55Speaker 2: New Zealand's a wonderful scenery kind of gets up the
- 2:58Speaker 2: interest level. Quality of our attractions, our built form, and
- 3:03Speaker 2: our service that's what closes the deals and deal and
- 3:07Speaker 2: sticks with people. And I was just going to say,
- 3:11Speaker 2: it's not an easy thing for us to deliver luxury
- 3:15Speaker 2: service or luxury hotels in New Zealand. It's not easy
- 3:19Speaker 2: because we have relatively high labor costs. We've all got
- 3:23Speaker 2: many people have experienced lots of service while traveling overseas.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We've got fairly high labor costs, and we've got fairly
- 3:31Speaker 2: high construction costs, and our hotels are Grace and do well,
- 3:35Speaker 2: but it's expensive to build them and it's expensive to
- 3:37Speaker 2: run them.
- 3:38Speaker 1: James really appreciate your time this morning. Thank you so much.
