- 4:00really, I really yes, well, I mean i'll call you later.
- 4:09I suppose so, yes, well, thanks very much, goodbye.
- 4:15All right, come on, keep your eye on the fourth quarter over there
- 4:32near the dock. See. Yeah, doesn't seem to be moving. She
- 4:41is no lights, makes it hard to stelle. Probably cut their motor.
- 4:45He does what quarter? When I get the word, switch on the search
- 4:48and when I have a look at that boat. I funny we didn't see
- 4:53them slipped past her Bellian. I'd have moved around the bar yank and over
- 4:56there. Much visibility tonight, anyway, I think we want to have been
- 5:00closer. I'm not yet, ole boy. They're the ones they'd slip out.
- 5:03Whether they've got us too fast for us? All right, Peter,
- 5:10switch on doctor engine mcon dot a engine? Are you served on one?
- 5:19A boat? Don't you? Ermanion something like it? She could be a
- 5:24thornet crop MTP A little small. Oh, hey, throw the boat.
- 5:31I'm cutting up board. He's too, I'll peterhead mcon dog, I'll see
- 5:44hello. She's ringing about. I'm going to stop to stop the Macon dog.
- 5:49She's right her wrap it Towns a bag. The entire Netropolitan Police for
- 6:09US had been on the alert for a gang of waterfront fee They'd been in
- 6:12operation for years, but during the past three weeks had enlarged operations to certain
- 6:15extent that every available man had been sent to the duck's vicinity. Ten tradition
- 6:20launches had intensified their patrol, and still we had not been able to put
- 6:24a stuff to the piracy. We knew that they were using a high powered
- 6:27motor boat and fellows. They chose foggy or moonless night for their attack.
- 6:31However, that night we found them well Avendon. I was flat on my
- 6:35face trying to bury myself in the deck of a bouncing police launch while a
- 6:39machine gun bullet whipped over me. You are right, black, oh,
- 6:50happy as a lark. I couldn't think of a nice away to spend an
- 6:53evening. All right to move it had a pump. Yeah, don't know
- 6:57what you mean here in un the wireless horrific Hellamos makes contact with a crop
- 7:01MTP. That'll because and I'm heading up river ask him to under sept curse
- 7:05that Teddington lost beg a doss good eggins full pottle. I hate to us
- 7:24good but not we're picking for cover, I mean miss speed in part.
- 7:27Oh they're doing it. We've got to catch him. Oh I don't take
- 7:30that. We'll make dots big us up. Can't be a basic things?
- 7:33Where are we off? A tick grenide? Reach isle of dogs over there?
- 7:40Ye oh, that cap got nerves know where he's going. I hope
- 7:46you do not, Jude, old boy. Just as long as we don't
- 7:48hit a bog or a log or something like that. How fast were going?
- 7:54Thirty? He was like six, Fee we hit anything, it won't
- 7:57make any difference. Are a cheerful tom? I say, how do you
- 8:01know they try it tonight? I didn't. But it's threeen eight days since
- 8:03the last one. It's the first foggy nights is then don't get the hunt?
- 8:07Oh but do you think we can catch them? And now try?
- 8:11Though you like machine guns, if I'm behind them, I don't mind.
- 8:16Always have one aboard for emergencies. Might have to use it all right?
- 8:18Because I yelled him rather Peters and I told Peter the Germans row boat in
- 8:24an MTV there's nothing like it. Aha, except enough is that the yard
- 8:30senter his swine. I didn't close one. I wish this ruddy fog would
- 8:48lift h t A right, but it didn't. We kept on the same
- 8:56incredible speed. Damn you must have known the river by He had to,
- 9:01because I know he could barely see it. The pot boat was somewhere in
- 9:03front of it, and we rolled and flapped in his wick. T D
- 9:07two passed the divisional base at Whopping Carbridge London Bridge, Waterloo. Once we
- 9:13thought he saw a dark shape the head as the park cleared for a moment,
- 9:16but it quickly closed in again. We were rolling on the Putney Bridge
- 9:18when Peter's bought a while his messages. If it's from Whopping, sir,
- 9:28oh luck, one of the launches show him go by it, but it
- 9:31was too fast for him. It's too fast for us too, if that
- 9:35isn't a converted pawnic craft di leaded or how far do you think you'll run?
- 9:39Who knows he can't hide one of those things say well, we've found
- 9:43a party sooner or later, my dear, o't thing. We'venounce at least
- 9:46six months that they're using a boat. No one's ever seen us now we
- 9:50have, But if we give him twenty four hours, they can change the
- 9:52lines so that you will look like our house boat. Oh, why don't
- 9:56you and Sargeant Marvatt hop up to the bow of that god you see anything,
- 10:01have a pot at it or charming fellow. You're safe behind the wheel.
- 10:03They shoot back and we get it exactly. Give you something to think
- 10:07about, eh, Peter, bring out a couple of river at jacket.
- 10:11I sir, you can't have overcoats and bowlers on my ship. Black.
- 10:16They aceeeven of you. Yes, I doubted, Marppet doubts it too,
- 10:20look at him. By the time they reached a qule, there was no
- 10:24longer any sign about party's wig. The villain was forced to slow down.
- 10:28When I touched curist has screamed the warning and literally scraped by dragging a spring
- 10:33of small budges across deep The pug lifted a bit enough so that we could
- 10:37see only darkness ahead of us. There was no sign of the pirate.
- 10:43All right, they've sewn themselves up. We'll get him now. How heading
- 10:48can rocks ahead? You can see the lights. It's like a blind alley.
- 10:52Follow They might try to double back they won't get fired if they do
- 10:56see any signs, haven't Piers, hey ongeon, I give my sharp look
- 11:01out, I said, yeah, the locks don't they look rutty rot white
- 11:09out? Over what? The devil's a matter of nose? Do you think
- 11:13they didn't get the message? Why of course they did. Somebody's going to
- 11:16roast. But there's tears stand by with the bow line. We're going to
- 11:20run in for a minute, right, I love m juice going on and
- 11:22they must have better than a half my lead on us found double bloss foss
- 11:30feed bag of car next blocks at Hampton Court. We'll signal I had to
- 11:35close them. Ah what fil Yes, now I want to have a little
- 11:39talk with the gentleman in charge of the locks here. He's not going to
- 12:03be so easy now. Why there's a hundred places from the hide along the
- 12:05river. Even though we catch them before Hampton Court. You know they might
- 12:09have pulled him the shop if I've even got here, died for we could
- 12:11have seen them in that fog. Yes, I know now, well the
- 12:20devil's at locks master. Hello, they smell dumping eh oh yeah, good
- 12:33lord, look oh he's not dead that he's not going to wake up for
- 12:41a long time. He must have found the locks closed, came up here,
- 12:43forced him to open them, and I'll have Peters get him smelled yes,
- 12:50and send out a general alarm. Cover the river from here up to
- 12:52Roxford. Nah, what about Hampton Court locks? Aye wireless for a police
- 12:56guard, that is, if they haven't already got through. We couldn't,
- 13:05and as far as we could determine, some hours so later, they hadn't
- 13:07passed beyond Hampton Court. Now, except for the river Mole which emptied into
- 13:11the Thames, we had approximately ten miles of river to searche. Somewhere between
- 13:16the Teddington Lucks and Hampton Court there was a powerful motor launch, equipped with
- 13:20machine guns and carrying a crew whom we now knew might not stop at murder.
- 13:26One thing over which we had little control was the possibility that they would
- 13:28abandon the boat and escape by road. So I ordered a cord and set
- 13:33up on both sides of the river with the hope that we might forestall had
- 13:35Janet. It was going to be a long night. So when we docked
- 13:39again to take another machine gun aboard, I made a phone call. Hello,
- 13:50Hello Anne, Peter, Oh you I just cried myself to sleep.
- 13:54Where are Teddington on the river? How are you doing there? Looking for?
- 14:01No? It isn't then they've almost killed a man. Oh I'm sorry.
- 14:05I thought I might be able to drop by for a moment or two
- 14:07tonight. But oh it's all right. Take care of you. Yes,
- 14:11we'll make it okay, Yes, i'd love to. I miss you.
- 14:16Come in the morning, good night, good night? Ready, Yes,
- 14:20I'm coming copye, sir? Oh, thank you you, sir. Thanks
- 14:37Lada Pageant, Oh no, thank you might settle your muppet. That's what
- 14:43I'm afraid of, sir, for good nor No, watch that bag of
- 14:46Josh. Get the sets back on it. You just passed something. Oh,
- 14:50I say, sir, could be the same one. Hard to tell
- 14:54you. I know she's anchor to stand on. I have her look.
- 14:58Oh, take that gun on the bobby. That's right, sir. Keep
- 15:13the sect study on a Macintosh. What do you think I'll save my lines?
- 15:18All right? Of course there's more than one converted MTV on the river.
- 15:33They want me to hop over with the line, Oh will you we'll
- 15:37keep you covered from Yeah, it's kind of him enough in a sect alcerine?
- 16:02Oh, smell it up. Anybody in a board heaven born decks haven't
- 16:11been scrubbed in a month of Sundays. Now, they could have road for
- 16:15sure. If they carry a dingy and there's something funny about her, should
- 16:19carry light anchored in mid stream? Yes, Now where that devil's the switch?
- 16:41Don't turn it on and don't turn around. Now lock your guns,
- 16:48I said, drop him all right, Now, we're going to have a
- 16:55little talk. If anybody raises his voice, he's going to be exactly Hi,
- 17:17fellas, here to join me in a quick look at the past.
- 17:22Okay, here goes back around eighteen ninety, Charles Dudley Warner, who was
- 17:27editor of the Hartford Current, wrote in an editorial, everybody talks about the
- 17:33weather, but nobody does anything about it. Well, maybe no one did
- 17:37in eighteen ninety, but someone definitely has since then. Our United States weathermen,
- 17:45he's quite a busy gentleman who works for the Department of Commerce. His
- 17:49job is to read thermometers, barometers, anemometers, and other assorted meters which
- 17:55forecast weather conditions so the rest of us will know what to plan or what
- 17:59not. The plan like hanging out a wash or going to a baseball game.
- 18:04Information about weather conditions is also given to aircraft pilots and ship captains so
- 18:10they can plan their flights or cruises accordingly. Of course, they need more
- 18:15than just weather data, and the Commerce Department gives them what they need.
- 18:19Quarder pilots, the department issues aviation shots and maps and sees to it that
- 18:25air markers are laid out so that the pilots can find their way easily and
- 18:29safely. Quarter Ship captains, the Commerce Department issues nautical jots and tide tables
- 18:36to indicate when and where it will be safe to navigate their ship. The
- 18:41department also inspects the ships to see that they're in perfect operating conditions and issues
- 18:45licenses for the operating of the ships. So the next time you look up
- 18:51at the sky and wonder what kind of a day it's going to be,
- 18:53the crop might also cross your mind that many lives and valuable cargo carried by
- 18:59Americans flos, lanes, and ships are depending on the United States weather man,
- 19:03who is also looking at the sky. Oh, the second neck of
- 19:08First Sue of the Thames Pirates, the valiant and eyes stood in the darkened
- 19:23cabin and under us. The boat swayed in the current for a moment to
- 19:27suggest that, and then a light clothed and in it I saw the figure
- 19:33of a man, his hands cupping the barrel, allowing only a glimmer to
- 19:36see fool. There were four men, two holding comic guns. They come
- 19:41from a cubicle behind us. Pick up the gun's heads. Burst the blokes
- 19:48on your lawns, copper, Tell them to clear out. How am I
- 19:51going to do that? Anyway you want? They won't do it? You
- 19:55ay better? You can't get what's the odds? You you're a skipper.
- 20:00Get your head up there and tell him to cost so your parent can stay
- 20:03down here. Say the wrong thing and I'm going to shoot him. Got
- 20:07up? Kick all right, you're gonna move on. Say the right thing?
- 20:11Kid me? Well back, better do it? He does, all
- 20:22sir? Uh? Picked up black? What's a fingerprint? Man to come
- 20:27out? All right? Lets the boat back to seven. Bring a man
- 20:33back with you. You was staying aboard, Yeah, I've been starting bumping
- 20:38over. No, No, he can play with you. That's enough.
- 20:44Get back down here of getting hot. Stanny didn't cover any more? Do
- 21:03we know? Do we want to keep them with it. The brilliant that
- 21:11what I say? Wait, shut up. If you'd a tends of a
- 21:15motor instead of laying around pottied half the time, it wouldn't have broken down.
- 21:18Shut up, you coppers, wouldn't have founish you know that? Just
- 21:22bad luck, murder conking out. I suppose you realized I may be a
- 21:26murder chard now if the lock smanter dies he asked for it, right,
- 21:30film, all right, half hitch, I want that motor running again in
- 21:34fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes. You go with him, Bill, Okay,
- 21:45sit down, listen to me. You're our passport. See we're going to
- 21:51make a run down with her. And he locks her pills his top.
- 21:56That's you, I think, yes. But the whole police voices are when
- 22:00it gets light, when it gets like we start welling. Meantime, you
- 22:04can worry if you try anything funny with me. I tied us up,
- 22:11threw us on a couple of bunks, and then went up on bed.
- 22:15We could hear the sounds of repairs going on. We take the police launch
- 22:18at least an hour or more before it returned, And in the meantime Sabellion
- 22:22and I went a rather awkward position. Oh, come on, drabellion,
- 22:30no aesthetics? What you look like a turkey already for the oven? Oh?
- 22:38Yes? Is it to me? A couple of prize idiots walking into
- 22:45a trap like that? Can't move an inch? You? Oh? I
- 22:56mean what are we going to do? Pray? Get killed? Not if
- 23:00I can help it. I've got a date tomorrow night, rather like to
- 23:04keep it you, Oh, celebrate a woman wonder what Wait a second,
- 23:11it's something sharp behind the back. Hun, I'm trying to Yeah, you'd
- 23:18like tobacco can or something damned him? Oh and he lacks not yet last
- 23:26never mind that? Not get those ropes all funny, fellow, Oh that's
- 23:33torn. It sounds it there. Oh, what's the good word? It's
- 23:38coucking mostly me. But I'm kind to think about it. But you got
- 23:45any bright ideas about what we do once we are up? Got guns?
- 23:48Yes? Come on, get a move on. Contre o, DENI could
- 23:52have done it in half the time. I know when you were in the
- 23:55commander, they taught you about the old sucking Ah what Oh that wasn't to
- 24:03step back out in loose wayser, no wonder, pig, no sense of
- 24:11humor. You see, I d war when you turn over so that I
- 24:14can get it to hands right using the rise of blade Hans. I'm the
- 24:18feeling I did that on purple. What I thought? Uh? I see
- 24:26ah? I think I feel like a bunch of bananas. That's better.
- 24:32We are are we find something too? Ah, one for you and one
- 24:42for me. Jolly, I say, I saw an American film last week.
- 24:48Chap broke a bottle on the bottle and went to the other broke what
- 24:51a mess? And shall we I'm bringing on my heads more sporting gos behind
- 25:00the door. Get to get in the first light. You up it didn't
- 25:18break it? Guns, I said that up? Hey, all right,
- 25:26okay, we gotta be careful the wheel faces the cabin door. Whoever's they're
- 25:32they bound to see us have become up shoot first, So I'd rather not
- 25:34got a couple of machine guns, you know, I know? No,
- 25:37no, wait a bit, they'll come looking for mister ketch here and we
- 25:41can give them one at a time. Right here. Canna go down there?
- 25:52You probably found a bottom, all right, you know we are hello,
- 26:00pleasure mind, I'll play your ears off. Good no gun, no
- 26:07gun? Oh well put him away, I say we are hellroy tonight on,
- 26:15haven't seen anything yet. These boys are even sillier than we were.
- 26:21Happened more even now only two of them up there. Come on, come
- 26:26all behind you. The tap of the wheels. Hadn't take the call.
- 26:47You can't help us, Oh, I don't ad night, that's not that
- 27:00well. I suppose we've got to turn this thing around and all out the
- 27:07blossom at your job for about it before would be pirates that disguised the voted
- 27:15a fickermen, and with alarming ease, combined with tremendous luck, they managed
- 27:19to carry out their series of robberies. The luck's master the Cape from his
- 27:23injuries, and the men received long sentences for armed robberies. The night following
- 27:29their arrest, I kept my date with Misdam Crawford pursuit and the pursuit it
- 27:37ended. You know, many great men have attained the highest office in our
- 27:56land, the presidency of the United States, when you guess the name of
- 28:00this man. According to historians, no other single man ever did as much
- 28:06for a country as this president did for the United States. After a brigid
- 28:11military career, he was called from retirement. Who presided at a federal convention
- 28:15in Philadelphia, where he was unanimously chosen president. He was also unanimously re
- 28:22elected for a second term, but refused to run for a third. Although
- 28:26a Federalist, he named a man from another party, Thomas Jefferson, as
- 28:30Secretary of State. If you don't have his name by now here are two
- 28:36more clues. During his presidency, the cotton gin was invented and the first
- 28:41census was taken. Who was he? George Washington, first President of the
- 28:47United States. His life is part of your American Caribid. Pursuit is produced
- 28:52and directed by Elliot Lewis and has written by Antony Ellis. Music was composed
- 28:56and presented by Edi dunnfeather Dead Rights Ours as Inspector Peter Black with Willimond Lawrence
- 29:02the Sergeant Moffatt. Featured in Light's cast were Joseph Kerms, Mary Jane Craft,
- 29:06Dan o'hurleyhe Blue Krugman, Pewter Ollum, William Johnstone, and Charles David.
- 29:38We invite you to join us next week at the same time. When
- 29:41pursued, we'll bring you another dramatic story of the famous Inspector Peter Black of
- 29:45Scotland Yard relentlessly hunting down those whose dishorted passions read violence and murder. Another
- 29:52story of man hunting man. When We Bring You Pursue h M, starring
- 30:22Ben Wright, is the famous Inspector Peter Black of Scotland Yard has been a
- 30:26presentation of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service Welcome back. Well,
- 31:41I think with the episodes we're hearing of Pursuit, we do see how
- 31:48I think that they've been right. Version of Pursuit has really tried to have
- 31:53a variety of cases, and I think it does go back to something I
- 31:59talked about with the Line Up, a program which aired in a similar era
- 32:05to Pursuit, is that there was this idea of trying to make shows that
- 32:13would attract people who listened to and loved Dragonet and we kind of see the
- 32:20Inspector Black put into a variety of different situations. It's not just showing up
- 32:24at a murder scene looking for a perpetrator, which I think was the case
- 32:31in a lot of the earlier episodes. I do have an announcement, and
- 32:38that is that we actually only have three more weeks of Pursuit left, so
- 32:45coming in four weeks we will be bringing you The Saint with most of the
- 32:58episodes featuring Vincent, but we'll have Tom Conway in a few plus a very
- 33:05different first episode. You want to be sure and listen. So again coming
- 33:08in four weeks The Saint. Also those lost episode titles, a lot of
- 33:16very intriguing ones. Among the ones that we miss, Pursuit of the Musical
- 33:25Killers, Pursuit of the Chief Inspectors Guests, Pursuit in the English Manner,
- 33:30Pursuit of the Wilsden Terrors, Pursuit and the Wandsworth Prisoner, and Pursuit of
- 33:39the Counterfeit Killers, Pursuit of the Belden Motive, in Pursuit of the London
- 33:45Terror. So wow, a lot of episodes missing, but we brought to
- 33:50you the Thames Pirates and glad to do that. As I said, next
- 33:55week another episode of Pursuit and then I mean up tomorrow Pat Novak for hire.
