- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Sunday July 12, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where Australia’s new defence pact with Fiji is reshaping security in our region. The two countries sign a mutual defence alliance... pledging to come to each other’s aid if either is attacked. It’s the strongest deal Fiji has ever signed with any partner... and a clear signal of Canberra’s push to counter China’s influence in the Pacific. The agreement also includes economic and security cooperation... from maritime patrols to climate and disaster resilience. For Australians... it means deeper ties with a key neighbour... and potentially more ADF presence and joint exercises across the Pacific islands. — — [serious] In Sydney... the fallout from this week’s nationwide Telstra outage is still front and centre. The blackout hits mobile... internet... and some emergency services... disrupting transport and payments across the country. Hospitals and triple‑zero operators report delays and confusion... and businesses lose trading hours as EFTPOS goes down. Regulators now press Telstra for answers... and the government faces fresh questions on how resilient Australia’s critical infrastructure really is. For millions of Australians... it’s a reminder of how dependent daily life is on a handful of networks... and how fragile that can be. — — [serious] In Melbourne... economic anxiety ticks up as households face rising costs and patchy support. States warn they’re not ready for thousands of people losing access to the NDIS under tighter eligibility rules. Health experts say many will fall back on the public hospital system... adding pressure to already stretched emergency departments. At the same time... retail closures like Lincraft’s planned shutdown of its remaining stores highlight the squeeze on bricks‑and‑mortar businesses. For families and workers... it all feeds a sense that the safety net is thinning just as living costs stay high. — — [curious] Now to our region... where a big weekend event in Melbourne shows the power of live experiences in a digital age. Thousands of players gather for Pokémon GO Fest along the Yarra... turning the city into a giant augmented‑reality playground. Tourism operators welcome the influx... with cafes... bars and hotels seeing a bump in trade. It’s a lighter story... but it speaks to how event‑driven tourism is helping cities like Melbourne recover from slower retail and office activity... and attract younger visitors back into the CBD. — — [serious] Overseas in Europe... rugby fans wake up to a bruising result for the Wallabies. Australia leads France early in their Nations Championship clash... but then concedes 30 straight points to lose 42–26. The collapse raises familiar questions about consistency and depth just years out from the next World Cup campaign. For Australian sport... it’s another sign that traditional powers like France are surging... and that Rugby Australia’s rebuild still has a long way to go. — — [urgent] Meanwhile in the United States... security and antisemitism remain in sharp focus as Australia continues to mourn the Bondi Beach attack victims. American outlets highlight Australia’s tightened New Year and public‑event security... and the global rise in extremist‑motivated violence. For Australians... it’s part of a broader conversation about how to keep crowded places safe... while protecting the open... everyday freedoms people expect at beaches... malls and festivals. Governments at home and abroad are under pressure to improve intelligence sharing... online monitoring... and community support to prevent similar attacks. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
