Episode 132: Texas Novelist Explores Asian Family Experience in Dallas
Simon Han's debut novel, NIGHTS WHEN NOTHING HAPPENED, is about an immigrant Chinese American family trying to fit in with each other and fit into the predominantly white Dallas suburb of Plano. Set in 2003, we learn that each family member, the parents, and the two children, arrived at different times in Plano. This allows Han to craft narratives with each family member having a different perspective on Plano. It also exposes the conflict within the family, which is exacerbated by an incident in within their community that threatens the unity of the family.
