- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost. September 27 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Sunday, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. This Sunday used to be called vacant because it is inscribed in the Missal after the Saturday in Ember week.
- 0:35As the liturgy of Saturday lasted until the Sunday morning, this day had no proper mass. When later on, they no longer waited until evening in order to celebrate the holy sacrifice on the Saturday in Amber week, they borrowed for the eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, the mass composed in the sixth century for the dedication of the Church of Saint Michael at Rome, which was celebrated on September 29. That is why all the chants relate to the consecration of a church. I rejoiced when I was told that we shall go into the house of the Lord proclaimed in the introit and gradual. Moses consecrated an altar to God says the offertory.
- 1:28Enter the courts of the Lord and adore him in his holy temple, adds the communion. This mass following ordination Saturday also alludes to the priesthood. The new priests have just been blessed in Christ with all manner of riches both of utterance and knowledge as the epistle says. Like the savior who proved in healing the body of the palsied that he had also healed his soul, the priests have received power to pardon sinners. Palsy is indeed an image of sin for just as it deprives the body of motion sin destroys life in the soul.
- 2:19Commemorated today, St. Cosmos and Damian brothers by blood were chiefly brothers by their faith in Jesus Christ and by their common martyrdom suffered for his sake. They were born at Aegean in Arabia and distinguished themselves as physicians in the reign of Diocletian and Maximian. They healed the worst diseases as much by the virtue of Christ as by their medical knowledge. Their reputation soon spread everywhere.
- 2:57They were apostles rather than physicians. They healed souls as well as bodies following the example of Jesus in Palestine. They were denounced to the prefect Lysias and suffered the most cruel torments and were thrown in chains into the sea, stoned, and exposed to the flames of a brazier. After several other tortures, they died about the year of our Lord, 285, And their bodies were taken to Rome and laid in the ancient Temple Of Romulus transformed into a church which was dedicated to them and where the station is held on the Thursday of the third week in Lent. Their names are mentioned in the canon of the mass after several Roman martyrs.
- 4:02In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Lord, prove the truth of what thy prophets foretold and grant peace to the men who wait patiently on thy will. Listen to the prayers of thy servant, the prayers of thy people Israel.
- 4:29I rejoiced at the things that were said to me. We shall go into the house of the Lord. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Lord, prove the truth of what thy prophets foretold and grant peace to the men who wait patiently on thy will.
- 5:03Listen to the prayers of thy servant. The prayers of thy people Israel. The Collect. Let us pray. Let the exercise of thy compassion, we beseech thee, oh, Lord.
- 5:21Direct our hearts for without thee, we are not able to please thee. A commemoration of saints Cosmos and Damian. Grant we beseech thee, oh, almighty God, that we who celebrate the heavenly birthday of thy holy martyrs, Cosmos and Damien, may be delivered by their intercession from all the evils that beset us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.
- 6:13Brethren, I give thanks to my God continually in your name for that grace of God which has been bestowed upon you in Jesus Christ, that you have become rich through him in every way, in eloquence and in knowledge of every sort, so fully has the message of Christ established itself among you. And now there is no gift in which you are still lacking. You have only to look forward to the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will strengthen your resolution to the last so that no charge will lie against you on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes. The gradual.
- 7:06I rejoiced at the things that were said to me. We shall go into the house of the Lord. Let there be peace within thy ramparts. Ease in thy strongholds. Alleluia.
- 7:21Alleluia. The heathen shall fear thy name, O Lord. All the kings of the earth shall acknowledge thy majesty. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew.
- 7:42At that time, Jesus took ship across the sea and came to his own city. And now they brought before him a man who was palsied and bedridden whereupon Jesus seeing their faith said to the palsied man, son, take courage. Thy sins are forgiven. And at this some of the scribes said to themselves, he is talking blasphemously. Jesus read their minds and said, why do you cherish wicked thoughts in your hearts?
- 8:25Tell me which command is more lightly given to say to a man thy sins are forgiven or to say rise up and walk? And now to convince you that the son of man has authority to forgive sins while he is on earth. Here he spoke to the palsied man. Rise up. Take thy bed with thee and go home.
- 8:57And he rose up and went back to his house so that the multitudes were filled with awe at seeing it and praised God for giving such powers to men. The Offertory. Moses consecrated an altar to the Lord and offered burnt sacrifice on it and immolated victims. He made an evening sacrifice as a sweet smelling savor to the Lord God in the presence of the sons of Israel. The secret, O God, who by thy venerable intercourse with us in this sacrifice, dost make us partakers of the one supreme Godhead, grant we beseech thee that as we know thy truth so we may follow it by worthy lives.
- 9:58A commemoration of saints Cosmos and Damian. May the loving prayers of thy saints never fail us, oh Lord. May they make our gifts acceptable to thee and ever obtain for us thy pardon through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of the Most Holy Trinity.
- 10:39Just it is and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 12:01Blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Bring sacrifice. Come into his courts.
- 12:19Worship the Lord and his holy temple. The post communion. Let us pray. We have been renewed, O Lord, by thy sacred gift and thank thee beseeching thee and thy mercy to make us worthy partakers in it. A commemoration of Saints Cosmos and Damian.
- 12:45We pray thee, oh lord, may this heavenly banquet of which thy bounty we have partaken, together with the united prayers of thy saints, bring protection to thy people through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
- 13:30Saint Cosmos, pray for us. Saint Damien, pray for us.
