- 0:33Here we go, episode. 131 of the Paddafax streaming on Apple
- 0:40Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts from.
- 0:45It is October 6th, 2025. Thank you so much for tuning in.
- 0:50I'm William Patterson. All right, all right, I know
- 0:54it's been a minute. It's been about a month since
- 0:57I've recorded a podcast and I know that's terrible and I want
- 1:01to get as many of these out as possible, but I've got a lot
- 1:06going on. You know, being on the air 5 * a
- 1:10week, having a 2 hour show, there's a lot of prep work for
- 1:13that and a lot of it crosses over.
- 1:15You know, there's, there's a lot of college football I'm talking
- 1:17about on Fox Sports Knoxville, but it's really tough when I'm
- 1:22also doing, you know, graphics and also trying to really pump
- 1:26out content on the social media side for the Padda facts.
- 1:30And we've made a lot of progress there.
- 1:32We had a great T-shirt sale a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:35I'm so appreciative of all of the orders.
- 1:38Had over 60 shirts ordered. Really, really cool stuff there
- 1:42and and really excited to see people repping that around town.
- 1:47And it's just a lot, you know, there, there's a lot going on
- 1:51and it's tough for just one guy to do all the editing and the
- 1:54video and the graphics and do all this stuff.
- 1:56So I do apologize. That has been a minute since
- 1:59we've talked, but I'm really excited to be back.
- 2:02Had a lot of free time this weekend.
- 2:04Knew I could get an episode out this week so I wanted to make
- 2:07sure to hop on it and we're doing a Monday release We.
- 2:10Usually do Tuesday. Releases because that gives me a
- 2:12little bit of wiggle room during the weekend, but we're doing a
- 2:16Monday release. Again, I'm sorry, but it's tough
- 2:20for just one guy to get all this done.
- 2:22But we've got so much to talk about today.
- 2:24From Week 6 of college football. It seemed like a boring slate to
- 2:29a lot of people, but 3/30 had a ton of fireworks and there were
- 2:34a ton of fireworks throughout the day.
- 2:36So we'll get into all the big time matchups and big time
- 2:39storylines. Penn State, UCLA, Alabama and
- 2:44Vanderbilt, Miami and Florida State, Texas and Florida.
- 2:49And we'll also get into some of the smaller games as well.
- 2:51But so appreciative of you tuning in.
- 2:54And I know it's been a minute. So I, I'm really appreciative
- 2:58for you tuning back in as it's been a little bit, but make sure
- 3:02you're following at the Padifax on Instagram.
- 3:05Really, really trying to pump as much content out on there,
- 3:09trying to grow that brand as much as I can.
- 3:12So follow at the Padifax on Instagram, at the Padifax on
- 3:16Twitter, at TP Fax on Sports on Tiktok, and then also at the
- 3:21Padifax on YouTube. We've gotten some great
- 3:24subscribers recently just doing some short form content.
- 3:27So make sure you're following over there as well.
- 3:30So now that we've got all the announcements out of the way,
- 3:32let's get into the week 6 takeaways from college football.
- 3:37And we'll begin with Penn State and UCLA.
- 3:41And I am documenting this as James Franklin's worst loss ever
- 3:46as #7 Penn State falls at UCLA 42 to 37.
- 3:53And the pre game storylines coming into this one was how
- 3:56does Penn State respond after losing to Oregon at home in
- 3:59double overtime? What does UCLA look like after
- 4:03firing their offensive coordinator earlier in the week?
- 4:06As we know, this UCLA team has been an absolute mess.
- 4:10You know, Niko Emalayaba transfers over to the Bruins in
- 4:13the offseason. That was the big talking .1 of
- 4:15the biggest storylines we've ever seen in college football
- 4:18was Emalayaba's transfer from Tennessee to UCLA.
- 4:22And the Bruins are O and four. They fired their coach, they
- 4:25fired their offensive coordinator.
- 4:27It's been an absolute mess. And on Saturday when CBS panned
- 4:32into the game, it looked like, I mean, it was empty.
- 4:35And, and that's a historic stadium.
- 4:37And that is a a program that, at least back in the day, had a lot
- 4:40of fire. To it and.
- 4:42It was surprising to see a top ten team in the country come in
- 4:47and the place basically be deserted, but as the game went
- 4:50on people start to file in. Maybe UCLA traffic or LA traffic
- 4:54was was keeping people up, but regardless, it was a mess
- 5:01through the 1st 4 weeks of the season for UCLA, first five
- 5:03weeks of the season for UCLA. And on Saturday things totally
- 5:07flipped a switch. I will give credit to the Bruins
- 5:10here in a minute, but let's focus on my takeaways and really
- 5:15my main take away from this one. And this is what happens when
- 5:20you overlook opponents in 2025. We've seen this time and time
- 5:23again in college football where a power conference team plays an
- 5:28inferior opponent and just feel like they're the better team on
- 5:32the field regardless of what happens.
- 5:35We saw this last year with Notre Dame and Northern Illinois.
- 5:39The Fighting Irish come off a big time win at Texas A&M.
- 5:42They come into that Northern Illinois game thinking they'll
- 5:44just walk right through them and instead Northern Illinois gets a
- 5:49win in South Bend. We've seen this last year with
- 5:53Alabama as well. Alabama plays Vanderbilt on the
- 5:56road. Vanderbilt's never been worth
- 5:58anyone's time of day in the SEC. Now obviously since that game we
- 6:02know that they are worth the time of day, but at the time
- 6:05Alabama and Vanderbilt was one of the most lopsided matchups on
- 6:09paper you would known over the last 10/15/20 years really ever
- 6:13since Vanderbilt's played. Football.
- 6:15Alabama comes off that big time win over Georgia, overlooks
- 6:18their opponent and boom, you get a big time loss.
- 6:22You could say the same about Florida and South Florida this
- 6:25year. The Gators with DJ Lagway, a top
- 6:2815 team in the country heading into the season.
- 6:31They play South Florida, who did get the win over Boise State in
- 6:34the opening week. But this is Florida at home.
- 6:36Surely they'll just waltz right over South Florida.
- 6:39No, it's what happens when you overlook your opponent, and Penn
- 6:43State was victim of that on Saturday, thinking they could
- 6:47just walk in and destroy an ON4 UCLA team.
- 6:51Penn State had won 34 games in a row against unranked opponents
- 6:55before Saturday, and this is James Franklin's worst loss in
- 7:00my eyes. Because this is an inexcusable
- 7:03performance on both sides of the football, let's start with the
- 7:06offense real quick. Drew Aller finishes with 278
- 7:11total yards, but in the first half this offense could not move
- 7:14the football. And a big reason why is because
- 7:17K Tron Allen and Nick Singleton, 2 guys that I was head over
- 7:20heels for coming into the season, combined for just 89
- 7:25yards on 19 carries for the game.
- 7:27Both of those guys have been severely underwhelming this
- 7:31season. And they're also, as a group out
- 7:34gained by UCLA 435 yards to 357 yards.
- 7:40A UCLA team that has an offensive coordinator that just
- 7:43started on Tuesday is able to put up 435 yards of offense up
- 7:48against this team. And Penn State is not able to,
- 7:51you know, either match or exceed what the Bruins are able to do.
- 7:55And this is a UCLA team that has lost to Northwestern and UNLV
- 8:00New Mexico. Utah is a good football team.
- 8:04I'll give them that one because that's a tough match up.
- 8:06But this is not like this was some juggernaut defense that has
- 8:09been keeping opponents from getting in the end zone all year
- 8:12long. I think Penn State's a better
- 8:14team on paper than Utah. Utah walked in that same
- 8:17building at night and put up over 40 points, and I just
- 8:22thought the offense looked completely lethargic in the
- 8:24first half. They finally got things going in
- 8:26the second, but it was almost too late because the defense
- 8:29wasn't able to get stops. And I think late game
- 8:33situationally, actually before we even get to the late game,
- 8:36let's talk about the end of the first half for Penn State.
- 8:39You have 3 timeouts and James Franklin basically says we're
- 8:43just trying to get off the field, we're trying to not make
- 8:45any more mistakes, Just go to halftime to re evaluate things.
- 8:49What in the world is that? You got 3 timeouts with around 2
- 8:53minutes remaining in the half and you're on the like 50 yard
- 8:57line and you're running these little draw plays and and you
- 9:02know, half back dives that that was concerning.
- 9:06Surely Penn State has more of a more aggression than that up
- 9:11against UCLAI get it? You made a lot of mistakes, but
- 9:14that was inexcusable. The second-half they came out
- 9:17with a lot more fire. They get a a defensive or slash
- 9:20special teams touchdown with the the punt block that you know,
- 9:24results in a scoop up in the end zone and Penn State gets on the
- 9:29board that way. That was really big in in terms
- 9:31of the momentum. But on 3rd and seven, you allow
- 9:33Nico Emily ABBA to run 50 yards down the field.
- 9:37So I mean it, it was a combination of a lot of things.
- 9:40But you know, I mentioned that late game scenario.
- 9:43I want to get back to that real quick 4th and two with the game
- 9:48on the line. I know you have 3 timeouts in
- 9:50your back pocket, but. You've got the football.
- 9:53With two yards to to gain and you run a fake sweep quarterback
- 9:59run with Drew Aller. That's the best play you have in
- 10:03the playbook when you haven't ran the football well all game.
- 10:06With two running backs that were supposed to be you know, top
- 10:10three round picks in the NFL draft this upcoming year heading
- 10:13into the season, Drew Aller running it is your best play
- 10:17call. What the hell was that?
- 10:20So this whole game was just defined as.
- 10:25Poor. Coaching, poor time management
- 10:29and a ton of lackadaisical errors for Penn State.
- 10:34And these are the type of things that come from a type of matchup
- 10:40where you just feel like you're going to walk in there and win.
- 10:43Like, let's go back to Florida. South Florida, that was one of
- 10:45my examples earlier. Florida had a lot of boneheaded
- 10:48penalties, you know, spitting on players late in the game that
- 10:51allowed South Florida to get an automatic first down, getting
- 10:53field goal position. Win that game, but before?
- 10:55That. 3 touchdowns, call back for penalties.
- 10:59You know, you had the the special teams miscue.
- 11:02You're you're not executing in the red zone.
- 11:04You're taking 3 instead of seven, like stuff like that.
- 11:07Those things build up and it built up for Penn State on
- 11:11Saturday where it got to the point where they were having to
- 11:15do a fire drill just to get out of UCLA and they obviously
- 11:19couldn't do it. But they had really poor time
- 11:22management and situational football and some very key
- 11:25moments. And that's coaching.
- 11:28I know James Franklin's one of the biggest punching bags in
- 11:31college football. But Saturday is the type of game
- 11:35where you just point and say, how does this happen?
- 11:37Like because James Franklin's whole narrative is he can win
- 11:40the easy ones, he can win the ones he's supposed to win on
- 11:43paper. But when it comes to the big
- 11:44dogs, the night games, the Oregon's, the Ohio State's, he
- 11:47can't get it done. Saturday was this guy can't even
- 11:50get it done against UCLA with a top three roster in the country
- 11:56and James Franklin's contract runs through 2031.
- 11:59His buyout $56 million entering the season.
- 12:03So it's not like they can really fire him right now or fire him
- 12:07at the end of the season. I I think he's here at least for
- 12:10the time being. Now if things continue to go off
- 12:12the rails, I'm sure the boosters will will clock in and have
- 12:14something to say about it. But the the big take away here
- 12:19is this is what happens when you overlook your opponent.
- 12:22And Penn State got what they deserved.
- 12:26They thought they could just waltz in and beat little old
- 12:28Nico Amaliava. And UCLA with the offensive
- 12:32coordinator that started four days ago seemed very simple.
- 12:35Big, bad Penn State coming off a tough loss to Oregon at home, a
- 12:39game that there were plenty of red flags in that one as well.
- 12:42But. We let it go.
- 12:44But even through the course of this season, Penn State has been
- 12:47underwhelming each week. I mean, I know like.
- 12:51A lot of people. Are are gamblers out there and
- 12:54will bet on Penn State? They're O and five against the
- 12:57spread this season. But like even in in the games
- 13:00against Nevada and FIU and Villanova, like they they've let
- 13:04down. They haven't been that
- 13:05impressive. They're like that FIU game was
- 13:08kind of weird. Like FIU kind of hung around for
- 13:11that one, that halftime, it was like 17.
- 13:12Nothing. And I know it's, you know,
- 13:14you're up 17 points and you can't take any win for granted.
- 13:17But Penn State should not be in a dog fight in the first half
- 13:21with Florida International. So I think there were red flags
- 13:25throughout the season with this team to this point.
- 13:28And Saturday, everything became unraveled when you couldn't get
- 13:32stops and when you couldn't execute offensively in the first
- 13:37half at all. And you also had a lot of poor
- 13:40coaching techniques, poor game management techniques, poor play
- 13:44calling and critical moments. Now, James Franklin's not the
- 13:48only one to blame because I do want to talk about Jim Knowles,
- 13:51the defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions who comes over
- 13:54from Ohio State. That was one of the big hires of
- 13:56the offseason. In fact, he's the highest paid
- 13:59coordinator in the country. And UCLA with a guy that just.
- 14:04Started four days ago, Goes for 400. 35 yards.
- 14:08This is a very talented defense, very talented.
- 14:13There's no way that New Mexico and Utah and UNLV could get to
- 14:18Nico Imaliava. Northwestern could get to Nico
- 14:22Imaliava cause a lot of pressure and Penn State couldn't.
- 14:26I mean, again, I I don't want to discredit what Nico did because
- 14:30he did play a really, really impressive game, but Penn State
- 14:34should be able to contain him if every other team they've played
- 14:38has been able to do that too. So this was a really bad
- 14:41performance from Jim Knowles as well, who I think's a really
- 14:44good coordinator, obviously had a ton of success with the
- 14:46Buckeyes last season. But I mean, he deserves a lot of
- 14:51blame as well for schematically losing to a guy that was
- 14:56basically a graduate assistant, you know, a couple weeks ago.
- 15:00So we'll talk more about Penn State where they go from here
- 15:03and here in a minute. But overarching take away from
- 15:06this one, This is what happens when you overlook your opponent
- 15:09in 2025. Now for UCLAI am happy for Nico.
- 15:14I'm happy for UCLA. It's been a tough year and
- 15:18covering Tennessee football for Fox Sports Knoxville.
- 15:21I know all about Nico Imalayaba. I know all the insurance and
- 15:24outs of what happened in the locker room and what was said
- 15:27and what happened over the course of his time at Tennessee.
- 15:30And I know a lot of people still hold that against them, and
- 15:35there's a lot of that within me too.
- 15:36I, I know a little bit more than I should probably, but this was
- 15:42a cool story on Saturday. And I, I did feel good for Nico
- 15:47that he was able to get a win. The cool story in this one is
- 15:50Jerry Neuheisen, who takes over play calling duties earlier in
- 15:53the week. As I mentioned, they fire damn
- 15:56near everyone over the last couple of weeks.
- 15:58They get rid of the offensive coordinator and Neuheisen, who's
- 16:01the son of Rick Neuheisen, who's on CBS Sports, does the, you
- 16:05know, pre game, post game halftime show for the CBS crews
- 16:09also on inside college football on Tuesday nights.
- 16:13I TuneIn that. Pretty regularly as well.
- 16:15But Neuheisen comes in and they pump out 435 yards of offense,
- 16:21269 yards on the ground. They had Penn State on their
- 16:25heels the whole game and it wasn't like they totally changed
- 16:29up a lot of what they've done, and I've watched a fair share of
- 16:33UCLA this year. It's a lot of what Nico ran at
- 16:36Tennessee where it's a lot of RP OS and you have an, you know, a
- 16:39lot of options. Nico has the option to run,
- 16:41option to hand off or option to throw it to the sideline.
- 16:44But they haven't really been able to find the consistency in
- 16:47that aspect. And I thought you saw more drop
- 16:49backs and more potential for Nico to get out as a runner and
- 16:54he had a lot of success doing that.
- 16:56Nico in the air goes 17 of 24166 yards, 2 touchdowns, and then 16
- 17:02carries for 128 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
- 17:07This was a brilliant performance from him.
- 17:08I thought one of the best throws was on the two point conversion
- 17:11try where Nico evaded pressure, spun out of the pocket, rolled
- 17:16her out to the left and zipped it into the back of the end
- 17:19zone. Finds an open receiver, gets
- 17:21drilled right after. But that was the type of play
- 17:24that Nico Yamala was hyped up to be coming out of high school,
- 17:28and that was the potential that a lot of people saw at
- 17:31Tennessee. Now last year there was a lot of
- 17:34inconsistencies in SEC play, but he did show flashes at times of
- 17:38what he could be. I think the big gripe with him
- 17:40was he just got to be more accurate down the field.
- 17:44And I think the big bonus with Saturday's performance was that
- 17:47he was efficient. 17 to 24 is really good in the air, but he
- 17:51also had the effect on the ground.
- 17:53But on those deep ball throws he was able to connect on think one
- 17:57out of three. So he's completing 33% of them.
- 18:00At least at Tennessee, he was like a 10% guy like where the
- 18:05overthrows were just a really big part of it.
- 18:07And UCLA had a big chunk play in the second-half that gave them
- 18:11the opportunity to get in in scoring range and punch it in.
- 18:15That was one of the biggest plays of the game and again,
- 18:17credit to Nico for being able to deliver that football that was
- 18:20in tight coverage and that gave UCLAA big boost when Penn State
- 18:25had started to get a little bit of momentum.
- 18:27So new Heisen deserves a lot of credit.
- 18:30That's a really tough situation to come into.
- 18:32Hey, we're O and four. We're up against the number
- 18:35seven team in the number seven team in the country off a loss
- 18:40at home to a top ten team in the country in Oregon.
- 18:43And they're going to be upset. They're probably going to want
- 18:45to, you know, take out a little bit of frustration on you.
- 18:49And new heiser was like, no, I'm going to do my thing.
- 18:52And and it was funny listening to him after the game talking
- 18:55about how he was still figuring out like the headset and all
- 18:58that stuff. It's just so cool.
- 19:00And he was overjoyed and UCLA was overjoyed.
- 19:03This is what college football is all about.
- 19:07I know UCLA is O and Four heading into this game and
- 19:10they're not going to have much of A season going from here.
- 19:12They'll probably lose their fair share of games coming up.
- 19:14Maybe they'll change, I don't know.
- 19:16But New Heisen gets carried off the field, a Gatorade bath,
- 19:21smiles, everything. That's what it's all about, man.
- 19:24And I thought that was really, really fun for them and I was
- 19:27happy for New Heisen, UCLA and Nico.
- 19:31A strong performance from all of them all the way around.
- 19:33It's the first one by UCLA against the AP Top Ten team
- 19:37since 2010 and UCLA also became the first team that was O and.
- 19:42Four or worse. To be an AP top ten team since O
- 19:46and six UTEP stunned #7 BYU, the then reigning national champions
- 19:52in 1985. So what you witnessed on
- 19:55Saturday folks was something that has not happened in a very
- 19:59long time. So credit to UCLA, really good
- 20:03performance. So they were able to get it done
- 20:04on both sides of the football and won situationally as well.
- 20:09Let's go back to Penn State, however, to wrap this game up,
- 20:13Drew Aller post game, I thought was a little bit snappy with the
- 20:17reporters. And I know that players and
- 20:19coaches don't owe the media anything.
- 20:21But as someone that's in the media and has been in those
- 20:24rooms before and has interviewed players and coaches before, like
- 20:29we're just trying to do our job right.
- 20:31Like, you're trying to coach a football game.
- 20:33My job is to ask questions, get information and be able to spurn
- 20:38that into a story or just my own personal knowledge.
- 20:41And I know that after the game is not the best opportunity to
- 20:45talk to a player. These guys are competitors.
- 20:47They're upset, they're frustrated.
- 20:49They're like, you know, many Penn State fans and members of
- 20:52the fan base, They're frustrated they lost this game.
- 20:55But I thought Drew Adler showed a little bit of
- 20:58unprofessionalism after the game when talking about that, you
- 21:02know, this is still a playoff team.
- 21:03The the question was, do you believe this is still a playoff
- 21:06team? And Ala responds, What do you
- 21:08think? And the reporter goes, I don't
- 21:11know, I'm asking you. And he goes like, yeah,
- 21:14obviously, like, you know, just a little snappy.
- 21:18And I feel like that's kind of the state of Penn State football
- 21:20right now. They they're all kind of on
- 21:22edge. James Franklin's always on edge.
- 21:25I've always thought it was unprofessional for him to go get
- 21:28involved with any of the fans. You're above them.
- 21:31We don't need to do all that. And it it trickles down to the
- 21:35players as well in these moments where I get it, they're
- 21:38frustrated. But the answer would have, you
- 21:41know, the better answer, the better reaction would have been,
- 21:43yeah, we still have everything in front of us, right, Like
- 21:46Diego Pavia. And we'll talk about about that
- 21:48game here in a minute. I thought Diego Pavia handed
- 21:50handled himself well at the podium after the game on
- 21:54Saturday. He's talked more than anyone.
- 21:56He's the one that's getting the brunt of every loss for The
- 22:00Commodores. But he handled himself well,
- 22:03said, hey, you know, they have one loss.
- 22:04We have one loss. We still have everything in
- 22:06front of us. You know, that that that should
- 22:08have been Aller's approach. Like, hey, there were two lost
- 22:10teams. There were three lost teams that
- 22:12made the College Football Playoff last year.
- 22:13We still have everything ahead of us.
- 22:16So I I want a big fan of that. I I just think it's a heat of
- 22:20the moment thing, but I think it also is a representation of the
- 22:24type of attitude and type of feel right now that many Penn
- 22:27State fans have and that program has after a unimpressive start
- 22:32to the season. So Penn State has at Iowa coming
- 22:35up in Week 8. That's going to be a tough
- 22:36matchup. Iowa plays really good
- 22:38defensively, Gronowski at quarterback.
- 22:41A little bit of a. Wild card.
- 22:43He's good on the ground. There's been better on the
- 22:45ground than he's been in the air.
- 22:47But you know, I was a tough place to play.
- 22:48They'll get up for that one at Ohio State.
- 22:51It's going to be in Week 10. That's off a by so maybe an
- 22:55extra week of preparation helps out, but right now Ohio State
- 22:58continues to play really good football.
- 23:00I have a hard time believing Penn State goes on the road and
- 23:03wins that one. And then you have Indiana in
- 23:05week 11. So back-to-back matchups up
- 23:08against what will be top 15 teams in the country.
- 23:11We'll we'll see what Indiana does against Oregon this
- 23:13upcoming weekend, but the rest of their schedule sets up to
- 23:16where they'll be at the worst A1 loss team heading into that
- 23:19matchup. So for a Big 10 championship,
- 23:22that's going to be off the table for Penn State, for the College
- 23:25Football Playoff, they've got to win out.
- 23:27But. I think this.
- 23:29Loss to O and Four UCLA might be the nail in the coffin.
- 23:33I have a hard time believing if they lose that game, they're
- 23:36going to be able to spurn off, you know, a three and O record
- 23:39against at Iowa, at Ohio State, Indiana.
- 23:41So this is going to be a very disappointing season for the
- 23:45Nittany Lions. I had them in my top three
- 23:47heading into the season. I think they were #2 yeah #2 in
- 23:51the season, in the preseason, I should say, just because of all
- 23:55the talent they returned. And I thought they had fixed the
- 23:58wide receiver issue by adding Devante Ross and Trevor Pena
- 24:02through the transfer portal. But this is a group that is
- 24:05underwhelmed. And and I also look at the
- 24:07running backs as a big reason why both Nick Singleton and K
- 24:10Tron Allen have not been the same player we saw last season.
- 24:14We'll move to Texas and Florida, the Gators.
- 24:18Play a complete game at home and I wish I bet on this one.
- 24:22I really did. I thought about it all week and
- 24:26I saw Florida was like pretty public early in in the week on
- 24:29like Tuesday or Wednesday. So I was like, all right, I
- 24:31guess I'll just stay off of it. This kind of feels like maybe a
- 24:35a big public side where. Everyone gangs up on Florida
- 24:38thinking they can win at home, so I stayed off of it.
- 24:41Texas ended up being the the public side here and anyway, I
- 24:46wish I took it. But hey, another positive week
- 24:48for the Paddafax. Five straight positive weeks for
- 24:52the paddle locks. Make sure you're tailing at the
- 24:54Paddafax. On Instagram and Twitter,
- 24:56another plug right there. But #9 Texas falls at Florida 29
- 25:01to 21. And the pregame storylines
- 25:04coming in this one was can Florida finally string together
- 25:07a competent offense, specifically a competent passing
- 25:11game, consistent passing game? Despite going up against a very
- 25:15talented Texas defense. You know, Anthony.
- 25:17Hill, Junior Collin Simmons, Michael Taff, Jelani McDonald.
- 25:21A very, very talented defense for the Longhorns.
- 25:26What does Florida look like up against?
- 25:28This group is going to be a tough task.
- 25:30Just Texas look improved against a powerful opponent.
- 25:34Outside of Ohio State, Texas hasn't played anyone this
- 25:37season. So this was going to be a litmus
- 25:39test of how they've improved a month into the season following
- 25:42that loss to Ohio State in Week 1.
- 25:45And then also, you know, kind of focusing on the quarterbacks
- 25:48here, DJ Lagway, Arch Manning, two guys that were highly
- 25:52propped up to begin the season have kind of underwhelmed which
- 25:55quarterback off to a rough start prevails.
- 25:58That's what I was watching for in this one.
- 26:00And I think we got a lot of answers here.
- 26:02And we'll begin with my first take away.
- 26:04And it's that Florida shows that they are a good football team
- 26:08when the passing game works. Now I know I haven't been able
- 26:11to say this on here because I haven't done an episode.
- 26:13In a little bit. But on Fox Sports, I've been
- 26:17talking about this for weeks. I think Florida is still a good
- 26:20football team. I think their biggest issue when
- 26:23you look at all of their games this year has been their passing
- 26:26game. It's been way too inconsistent,
- 26:28but defensively they're stronger than anyone in the country.
- 26:32I think their run game is really, really underrated with
- 26:34Jaden Ball and on Saturday you finally saw what the offense
- 26:39looks like. When they're able to get it done
- 26:41in the air, 457 yards of offense, 298 yards in the air,
- 26:46159 yards on the ground. They had 10.64 yards per attempt
- 26:52on their throws. This is the Florida offense that
- 26:56we expected coming into the season with DJ Lagway, and this
- 26:59is what I thought this team could be.
- 27:02At their best. DJ Lagway goes 21 of 28 for 298
- 27:07yards, 2 touchdowns. You get complimentary football
- 27:10from Jaden Ball who goes one O 7 and a touchdown on the ground.
- 27:14That was really big. But going back to Lagway, you
- 27:18know you've always had that run game be pretty consistent this
- 27:21season. I thought they went away from
- 27:23that against LSU. Where they ended up throwing it
- 27:25damn near 50 times against the Tigers, that's not going to
- 27:28work. But when they had that balanced
- 27:31attack and DJ Lagway is able to settle in, this is a good
- 27:34offense. We'll talk about the receivers
- 27:36here in a minute because I thought those were really big
- 27:38too. And also the the fact that the
- 27:40two biggest performers on Saturday at receiver refreshment
- 27:43is even. Scarier for this team, but DJ
- 27:46Lagway looked composed. He looked the.
- 27:48Part complete, 75% of his passes stayed in the pocket, did not
- 27:53try to force it into tight windows and there were a couple
- 27:57of plays that were really, really impressive.
- 27:59There was one play on 1/3 and seven.
- 28:01Where Lagway kind of sidearms it and I'm not a big fan of these
- 28:05five star quarterbacks starting to sidearm every throw.
- 28:08That was a big hit of mine on Arch Manning early in the season
- 28:11and DJ Lagway as well, trying to sidearm the football.
- 28:15But he had one of them that was perfectly executed and he had to
- 28:18do it because of the. Pressure and coming on him zips
- 28:21it out to I think Vernal Brown on a crossing route picks up the
- 28:24first down. That was a really impressive
- 28:26play. And I think he just got momentum
- 28:29and found the consistency, which I think has been the biggest
- 28:32issue for him all season. Hasn't had much momentum, hasn't
- 28:36had much consistency. And as a quarterback, you need
- 28:38that to find that confidence. And Billy Napier talked about it
- 28:42this week. He said this is the best he's
- 28:44looked this season in practice. That's a lot of coach speak, I
- 28:47know. But I saw that quote on
- 28:49Wednesday and I was intrigued by it.
- 28:51I was intrigued. OK, Do we get a different
- 28:53version of Lagway on Saturday? And this was the best
- 28:56performance of the season and Florida was able to orchestrate
- 28:59some of the best drives of the season offensively with Lagway
- 29:03at quarterback. And again, I mentioned Jaden
- 29:05Ball in the ground game because Florida needs that kind of
- 29:09production, 107 on the ground from Jaden Ball.
- 29:12That's complimentary football that gives Lagway the
- 29:15opportunity to take a little bit of a break, pick up some chunk
- 29:18yards on 1st down. Stay ahead of the chains.
- 29:21That's what happened for Florida on Saturday and there are a lot
- 29:24of really strong possessions for the Gators and Dallas.
- 29:28Wilson and Vernal Brown at wide receiver were really big impacts
- 29:31as well. Dallas.
- 29:33Wilson is a guy I talked about in the offseason when I did my
- 29:36pre season top 25 teams. I mentioned Dallas Wilson
- 29:39because he was really impressive in the was orange and blue game
- 29:44for the Gators in the spring and he's a true freshman.
- 29:47He's missed. The first part of the season due
- 29:50to injury. This was his first college game
- 29:52Saturday and he goes for six receptions for 111 yards and two
- 29:56touchdowns. He was all over the field.
- 29:59He was a play making receiver. He was a play waiting to happen.
- 30:05And I gave the comparison this offseason for Dallas Wilson to
- 30:10Jeremiah Smith, and it might have sounded extreme at the
- 30:13time, and it might still sound extreme saying this right now.
- 30:17But as a freshman, to come onto the scene up against this type
- 30:20of Texas defense, Dallas Wilson looked like the Jeremiah Smith
- 30:25player we saw last year for Ohio State as a true freshman.
- 30:29An instant impact player. You give him the football and he
- 30:32goes and makes a play. One of the biggest plays of the
- 30:34game was the sideline throw over.
- 30:37Wilson beats his defender, his defender actually hits the
- 30:39ground and Wilson is able to tightrope.
- 30:41Down the sideline and still beat 2 defenders in front of him to
- 30:44March into the end zone. By the way, one of them is
- 30:47Michael Taft, one of the best safeties in the country.
- 30:50Dallas Wilson was really, really impressive. 6 receptions, 111
- 30:54yards, 2 touchdowns. That's exactly what Florida was
- 30:57missing. And it's not like they have a
- 30:59bad receiving court. Like I like Eugene Wilson, even
- 31:02though he's been a little bit underwhelming.
- 31:04J Michael Sturdivant, the transfer from UCLA is a salad,
- 31:09you know, veteran option as well.
- 31:11But Vernell Brown is another really intriguing piece.
- 31:14He's another freshman. He's the guy that in week one
- 31:16against Long Island had that one handed catch that it was, I
- 31:21mean, it was incredible, one of the best catches of the season.
- 31:23But he goes for three receptions and 72 yards on Saturday.
- 31:27These guys are playmakers and that's what Florida has needed.
- 31:31And we'll talk more about those guys here in a minute because I
- 31:33was very, very impressed with them.
- 31:36But I also want to give credit to the offensive line for
- 31:39keeping a clean pocket for DJ Lagway. 0 sacks allowed on
- 31:43Saturday up against a ferocious defense in Texas.
- 31:48Anthony Hill, junior, one of the best linebackers, probably the
- 31:51best linebacker in the country. Trey Moore, a kind of a hybrid
- 31:55edge linebacker transfer from UTSAA season ago, was really
- 32:00good for the Longhorns last year.
- 32:01Over 20 career sacks for him. This is a tough group to go up
- 32:06against. Colin Simmons as well.
- 32:07I mean, he was a monster all last season and as a true
- 32:10sophomore, he's going to be playing in the NFL here soon.
- 32:14But this is a really good offensive line for the Gators as
- 32:19well. I mean, Jake Slaughter is
- 32:21probably one of the best centers in the country.
- 32:22He did a really good job anchoring that position for
- 32:25Lagway Saturday, and I thought they did a really good job of
- 32:28picking up the blitz packages and making sure that Lagway had
- 32:32all the time necessary. So that was really important.
- 32:35I thought Florida played really, really good offensively from
- 32:39what we've seen so far this year and when Florida can play
- 32:44complimentary football, get it done with Jaden Ball on the
- 32:47ground and have an effective, efficient in momentum DJ Lagway,
- 32:52this is still a good football team because the defense is
- 32:56really good and I know Florida is 2 and three.
- 33:00The record looks bad, but I feel like this is still a top 25
- 33:05level team. William, are you kidding me?
- 33:07Two and three in their top 25 level.
- 33:09I'm serious. You saw Saturday what this team
- 33:13can be when they get everything going offensively.
- 33:17LSU, they threw 5 interceptions and lost the game by 10 points.
- 33:21They only allowed 13 defensively.
- 33:25In any other world that is a 40 to 10 game.
- 33:29It shouldn't be 20 to 10, and maybe that's an indictment of
- 33:32LSU, but Miami's really, really good.
- 33:35We saw that this weekend and Florida hung around for the most
- 33:38part because of their defense. And in that game they also had
- 33:42their starting 3 defensive lineman out.
- 33:45So I think Florida is still a good football team.
- 33:47The record doesn't show it, but if they can play offense like
- 33:50this, I think they can have a turn around like they had last
- 33:53season. Now the other take away from
- 33:56this game is both defenses are very good.
- 33:58I've I've given a lot of credit to both of them, but I thought
- 34:00Florida made more plays. Florida gets a block punt that
- 34:04results in a safety. The Gators isolated the Texas
- 34:08run game only 52 yards for two yards of carry for the
- 34:11Longhorns. That was really big because it
- 34:13put a lot of pressure on Arch Manning and he had to aired out
- 34:16a lot more than they had probably wanted to.
- 34:19ACJ Baxter was a late scratch in this one.
- 34:21He was unavailable but contravene Wisner.
- 34:23Still a really, really good running back and they couldn't
- 34:26get anything going there. Manning also throws 2
- 34:29interceptions. The Gators in position for both
- 34:31of those. Devin Moore jumps the route on
- 34:34the a long throw down the right sideline to I think he was
- 34:38trying to hit Wingo or, or Wingo or more one of those.
- 34:43But Devin Moore jumps the the route, gets the interception and
- 34:46then Jordan Castell is just, you know, playing cover 4 zone and
- 34:50is just sitting right there for the interception.
- 34:53So two big interceptions in this one.
- 34:55But the Gators also got to the Arch Manning a lot. 6 sacks in
- 34:58this one. That's Tyreke Sapp becoming a
- 35:01big time impact. Miles Graham, a really
- 35:04impressive linebacker who's really good in coverage and as a
- 35:08blitzer as well. I just thought Florida made more
- 35:10plays in this one, and that was surprising because Texas does
- 35:14have a really good defense and I've given Florida a lot of
- 35:17credit. But I thought it would have been
- 35:18more balanced and the special teams in defense gave Florida a
- 35:22lot of great opportunities here. On the other side of that, who
- 35:27was going up against that Florida defense since Texas's
- 35:30offense in Arch Manning? Where do they go from here?
- 35:34I think execution is Texas's biggest issue offensively.
- 35:38I think Arch Manning cannot find a way to stay in rhythm.
- 35:41We saw this week one against Ohio State, he was missing
- 35:44throws, he was off target. He was doing the sidearm stuff.
- 35:48I'm not a fan of that. But on Saturday, I just thought
- 35:51he can never get in rhythm and he missed on a couple of pivotal
- 35:55plays. Ends up going 16 of 29 for 263
- 35:59yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, but missed on
- 36:02a number of big throws down the field and took a lot of sacks
- 36:06because he held on to the football too much.
- 36:09Is still missing targets and and or not reading the defense
- 36:12correctly on a couple of those interceptions.
- 36:15Those in a double coverage. Devin Moore makes the pick,
- 36:17overthrows or puts it out to in front, you know, too far in
- 36:22front of Wingo and and Jordan Castell is able to sit there and
- 36:25coverage and make the play. I just think consistency is the
- 36:29issue because he did show some flashes of some great plays of
- 36:32the long touchdown pass down the middle of the field.
- 36:35That was like a 50 yard touchdown.
- 36:36That was really, really impressive.
- 36:38That was the Arch Manning we heard all about this offseason.
- 36:42But I think the consistency is not there right now.
- 36:45And I know we faced a lot of pressure this offseason.
- 36:48I don't think all of it was completely warranted.
- 36:50I viewed him as a top ten guy because of the potential and
- 36:54what I thought he could be because last year when you saw
- 36:57him play, he was a guy completing 68% of his passes and
- 37:01was able to go into a lot of high stakes moments and perform.
- 37:05I know we only started against Mississippi State and ULM, but
- 37:08they did use them against like Texas A&M and and Georgia.
- 37:11He played, you know, sparingly in some of those games.
- 37:14Kind of like a Tim Tebow in 2006 with the Gators where they, you
- 37:18know, started Chris Leek, but would throw Tebow in there for
- 37:21some run plays and some gimmicks.
- 37:23And Tebow was able to deliver in those moments.
- 37:25Manning was able to do the same last year.
- 37:27So I I think for Texas offensively, you've got all of
- 37:31the star power. You've got the receivers.
- 37:33You got to get healthy at running back.
- 37:35You need CJ Baxter back there. So you have a good Ying and Yang
- 37:39with Weiser and Baxter, but I think it all comes down to
- 37:42offense or excuse me, all comes down to Arch Manning in the
- 37:46consistency in the execution from him on those big plays.
- 37:50Because there were a number of them Saturday that you go back
- 37:53and look and you just say how you know, how how do they not
- 37:57convert this? Or even on some of the plays
- 37:59that he connected on, they were overthrown and put, you know,
- 38:03his receivers in a really, really tight spot.
- 38:04There was one play down the left sideline in the first half where
- 38:09it's kind of a little bit of a gimmick play and Florida's in
- 38:12zone coverage. The receiver beats the zone and
- 38:16Manning makes the right read, but he overthrows it and throws
- 38:20a hospital ball. Now, the receiver was able to
- 38:22bring it down as a great catch, but it could have been a
- 38:24touchdown if it's thrown a tad earlier and a tad lower to the,
- 38:28you know, not as not as high. So it's just stuff like that
- 38:33mechanical stuff that I think Manning has to improve on going
- 38:36forward. They're going to get a big
- 38:38opportunity this upcoming weekend against Oklahoma.
- 38:41And that's a really good defense with guys like Eli Bowen in
- 38:43coverage. But I just think this is a
- 38:47little bit of a maturing year and developing.
- 38:50Maybe next year he is better. But right now I just don't see
- 38:53it in terms of the consistency. And I think Texas has some, you
- 38:58know, real concerns in terms of if this will be a College
- 39:02Football Playoff team. I I just don't see how you take
- 39:06what you what you've watched so far against two Power 4
- 39:09opponents in Ohio State and Florida and say this is a team
- 39:13I'm pretty comfortable that's going to make the College
- 39:15Football Playoff right now, 2 losses already for the Longhorns
- 39:18and Penn State. Looking at the upcoming
- 39:21schedules for both of them. Florida will play a Texas A&M
- 39:25this weekend. They I think they travel for
- 39:29that one. Yeah, they do.
- 39:30They travel for that one. Aggies got off to a little bit
- 39:33of a slow start this week against Mississippi State, but I
- 39:36think they're the best team in the SEC right now with the best
- 39:39win in the country. Beating Notre Dame off of by in
- 39:44South Bend, having to orchestrate a game-winning
- 39:48drive, I think that's one of the most impressive wins of the
- 39:50season. Gators have that one.
- 39:51They'll play Georgia week 10 off of by.
- 39:53They go at Ole Miss week 12 and then Tennessee in the Swamp week
- 39:5813. And they also round out with
- 40:00Florida State in the, in the swamp in week 14.
- 40:03I think there's a Florida team that can still win, you know,
- 40:07eight games. I mean, I, I know that schedule
- 40:09right there is tough, but I think there's a team that can
- 40:13still win 8, you know, 7-8 games still and, and have confidence
- 40:17in doing so. They're going to they're going
- 40:20to knock off another team this season or or two because this is
- 40:23a talented team and they do have a good defense.
- 40:27That Tennessee match up in Week 13, I I think should smell big
- 40:31time problems for the Volunteers, especially if they
- 40:35are 10 and 2 coming off a win against Oklahoma.
- 40:38A couple of weeks before that, that could be tricky.
- 40:41And then for Texas, you got Oklahoma, this week you're at
- 40:45Georgia and Week 12 off of by. I figure the Bulldogs will get
- 40:49back to their winning ways in that one.
- 40:51There's no way they lose 2 big time prime time matchups in the
- 40:56same season at home as they lost to Alabama last week.
- 41:00And then they round out with Texas A&M at home, which could
- 41:03be a big time when that could get them to 9 and three on the
- 41:05season. But I just need to see more
- 41:08consistency out of Arch Manning before I can, you know, really
- 41:12give much more confidence towards this group going forward
- 41:17here. Up next, it's Miami and Florida
- 41:19State. Miami is the best team in
- 41:24college football folks #3 Miami defeats #18 Florida State in
- 41:30Tallahassee, 28 to 22. They Sprint out to a 25 point
- 41:36lead and they kind of skate by as a Seminoles give them credit
- 41:40by the way, a fought back and this one did not stop because
- 41:44they were down. Fourth quarter heroics were on
- 41:46full display from Thomas Castellanos and this passing
- 41:50game, but it was too little too late and also three of the worst
- 41:54onside kicks I've ever seen. They've got to re evaluate how
- 41:56they're doing those. But the pre season, excuse me,
- 41:59the the pre game storylines heading into this one were
- 42:02Florida State looking to bounce back after last week's overtime
- 42:05loss to Virginia. Virginia gets a big win this
- 42:08weekend. We'll talk about that one here,
- 42:10you know, a little bit later on. But, you know, Virginia's a good
- 42:13football team. But, you know, Florida State
- 42:16should have expected to win that one, should have found a way.
- 42:18But again, kind of the same thing as Penn State, UCLA, you
- 42:22feel like you can just walk into anywhere and get a win.
- 42:25It's not how college football works in 2025.
- 42:28But they're looking to bounce back.
- 42:29Miami hits the road for the first time this season and a
- 42:32hostile environment. I think college football is at
- 42:35its best when dope Campbell is alive and well and it was for
- 42:41I'd say the first 6-7 minutes of this game.
- 42:46Not trying to do a 6-7 reference there.
- 42:47I I was really just thinking you know how the game went.
- 42:51But 6-7 will say, I'm sure that will, you know, be a good clip.
- 42:58But Corey Heatherman and his defense have been so impressive
- 43:01this season. Gus Malzahn's offense, really
- 43:04tough to go up against, especially when they're in
- 43:06rhythm. I was really intrigued by that
- 43:08match up. That's what I was looking for
- 43:10heading into this game. We'll get into the takeaways.
- 43:14Miami is just a well oiled machine on both sides of the
- 43:17football. Let's start offensively.
- 43:20They were lied heavily on its running game through non
- 43:23conference play and I think that was a good thing because and
- 43:28Shannon Dawson's air raid attack.
- 43:30You didn't want to throw too much at Carson Beck early on,
- 43:33but Miami really opened up the passing game Saturday.
- 43:37Carson Beck completed 19 of his first 23 passes with four
- 43:41touchdowns to begin the game. And it's the fifth time in
- 43:44Beck's career that he's thrown for at least 4 touchdown passes
- 43:48in a game. And he did it three times last
- 43:50season at Georgia and once in 2023.
- 43:53And Beck entered Saturday's game with the highest completion
- 43:57percentage in the ACC with a 73.2% percentage.
- 44:02And he finished twenty for 27 through the air to end the game.
- 44:06But that hot start was a big reason why I talk a lot about
- 44:09consistency and getting in momentum with a guy like Arch
- 44:13Manning. Shannon Dawson did that for
- 44:16Carson Beck. And obviously there there's a
- 44:18differentiating level of skill and experience there, but Larson
- 44:23Beck understands this offense, understands football is a really
- 44:27good player. And when he's able to get in
- 44:29rhythm 19 of 23 to begin the game, that that's the way to get
- 44:33your quarterback off to the right start.
- 44:35But give credit to his receivers, man.
- 44:38They did a lot of work in this one as well.
- 44:40Freshman Malachi Tony is one of the most electrifying players in
- 44:45college football. This season.
- 44:47He had scores of 40 and 44 yards, and the latter was a
- 44:51fourth and two call by Mario Cristobal and his staff.
- 44:54They just give Tony the football and he goes and makes a play.
- 44:56That was gutsy in the moment, but for the night, Tony finishes
- 45:01with 7 receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
- 45:05Continues to be an absolute gem for this team.
- 45:07And he was only a three star player.
- 45:09It's not like he was some five star, you know, big 6 foot four
- 45:12guy. This guy's 510 just with wheels.
- 45:16What a great find from Mario Cristobal and company to bring
- 45:19him into the program as he has been a stud right away and you
- 45:22saw that in that opener against Notre Dame.
- 45:26Now CJ Daniels, another really impactful player for this team.
- 45:29He's a transfer by way of LSU and Liberty now finds himself
- 45:34with the Hurricanes. He dashed through the defense
- 45:36for a 26 yard touchdown catch in the second-half.
- 45:39It was kind of a tunnel screen type of deal where he was able
- 45:43to get the football, had a ton of blockers and then they just
- 45:46opened up the way for him to to waltz right in.
- 45:49He finished with five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns,
- 45:54and Beck's chemistry with Daniels and Tony has been
- 45:57phenomenal most of the season. But Saturday was encouraging
- 46:01after the Hurricanes. It kind of struggled at home
- 46:04against Florida two weeks ago in the passing game had been a
- 46:07little bit more run lenient in the first couple of games of the
- 46:11season. Daniels and Tony made their mark
- 46:13on this one and Beck made sure to deliver the football in an
- 46:16effective way. Shannon Dawson deserves a lot of
- 46:19credit. Carson Beck looks like the
- 46:21player a lot of people anticipated he would be going
- 46:24into last year and he's coming off an injury this year.
- 46:28He was banged up. You didn't really know what you
- 46:30would get from him in terms of the chemistry and understanding
- 46:33of the offense. But he looks so comfortable,
- 46:37man. And one of the cool stories
- 46:38about back this offseason, obviously he was coming off of a
- 46:42surgery, had a lot of things going on off the field as well.
- 46:46And if you follow, you know, pop culture, social media, you know
- 46:50what I'm talking about, had a, you know, big break up with a
- 46:54celebrity. And, you know, he put all that
- 46:57to the side and focused on becoming a good teammate and,
- 47:01and forming those relationships early in his Miami tenure.
- 47:06And, you know, there there's a story about the Super Bowl where
- 47:12he invited all the guys over to his house and had a big Super
- 47:16Bowl party. Just stuff like that, man.
- 47:18Like you're Carson back. You got a big time NIL deal.
- 47:22You got a bunch of Ferraris and cars outside your house in this,
- 47:25you know, luxury house that you're living in.
- 47:28You don't need to do all of that.
- 47:30But Beck wanted to make an impact, and he wanted to make
- 47:33the most of not being able to participate on the field.
- 47:37He wanted to form that chemistry with those guys and it is shown
- 47:42through the first couple of weeks in the season.
- 47:43This Miami offense is damn good and it's a well oiled machine.
- 47:49They block really well. They've got some really flashy
- 47:52wide receivers like guys like Keelan Marion were the ones I
- 47:54was talking about the transfer from BYU heading into this
- 47:57season. But it's been Daniels and Tony
- 47:59that have stole the show and they get complimentary run game,
- 48:04a complimentary rushing attack as well.
- 48:05Wasn't as big on Saturday against the Seminoles but they
- 48:10they get a good balance and again, Shannon Dawson deserves a
- 48:13lot of credit, but no one deserves more credit than Corey
- 48:18Heatherman. Miami has the most improved
- 48:21defensive unit in college football.
- 48:24Miami allowed thirty points or more in five of eight ACC games
- 48:28last season and was tied for 68th in the nation and allowing
- 48:3225.3 points per game. This year they're allowing just
- 48:3713.6 points per game and just 17.6 points per game against
- 48:41powerful opponents. Corey Heatherman comes over from
- 48:45Minnesota. We had a top 10 unit defensively
- 48:48last year and has totally revitalized this Miami football
- 48:52team and has made them the best team in the country because they
- 48:56were great offensively last year with Cam Ward and and Xavier
- 48:59Restrepo and and and Damian Martinez.
- 49:02They were really good offensively.
- 49:03We knew that. But they would get themselves in
- 49:06tough situations because their offense was there's going to be,
- 49:09their defense was that bad. And now they play with violence,
- 49:14they play with execution, they play where they are all over the
- 49:18field and all up in your face. They make you uncomfortable in
- 49:23Miami has been the most improved defensive unit of the season.
- 49:27Ruben Bayne, Junior Hakeem Mesador make up one of the most
- 49:31ferocious fronts in college football.
- 49:34I mean it's like 2 NFL defensive ends coming at you every play.
- 49:39They finish with 11 total tackles between them off the
- 49:42edge. And there are a lot of plays
- 49:44where just their presence in general is worth a tackle.
- 49:49Thomas Castellanos on a couple of plays had a design
- 49:52quarterback run and would run to the left side and boom, Ruben
- 49:56Baynes right there. So he'd spin around or or, you
- 49:59know, change direction and boom, Hakeem Mesodor's right there.
- 50:03They might not have been credited with the tackle, but
- 50:05their presence alone is so impactful for this Miami team.
- 50:10And having that type of pass rush is huge to create these
- 50:16negative plays and to create a ton of pressure on the opposing
- 50:19quarterback to make quick decisions.
- 50:22And I think you've seen that in every game.
- 50:24Against Notre Dame in Week 1, I didn't love how the Fighting
- 50:27Irish leaned on CJ Carr a ton. Now he's turned things around
- 50:31and really didn't have a bad game by any means against Miami
- 50:34in Week 1 did CJ Carr, but I thought a lot of it was kind of
- 50:38dink and dunk and let's kind of get you acclimated to college
- 50:41football. He's been really good since this
- 50:43game. But Miami did not allow for CJ
- 50:48Carr to have a lot of opportunities down the field.
- 50:50A lot of the stuff was quick because they didn't want to have
- 50:53to worry about Ruben Bayne and Akeem Mezador.
- 50:55I think that speaks volumes of the type of impact they do.
- 50:58DJ Lagway was over his skis up against this defensive front,
- 51:02and Florida's got a good offensive line.
- 51:04But when Lagway, a little bit more inexperienced, was, you
- 51:08know, tasked with trying to move around in the pocket and being
- 51:11met with Ruben Bayne and Mezador, then that's a tough
- 51:14task for him to go up against. So it takes a lot of pressure,
- 51:17puts a lot of pressure, I should say, on the opposing quarterback
- 51:21to make quick, quick decisions. And Thomas Castellano's as good
- 51:25as he's been this season and, and, and moments, he's really
- 51:30undersized. And it's not like he can just,
- 51:33you know, power his way through it like 5-10.
- 51:35It's tough to go up against a big old Reuben Bayne junior who
- 51:39looks every bit of his size listed on the depth chart.
- 51:42So those two guys I can't say enough about.
- 51:46But another guy I want to touch on is Jacoby Thomas, a transfer
- 51:50from Tennessee. I was very surprised he hit the
- 51:52portal, especially covering Tennessee football.
- 51:55You know, I cover all these guys and I thought it was very
- 51:59interesting that he decided to transfer.
- 52:02But he flies all over the field for this Miami team at safety
- 52:06and on Saturday recorded 4 tackles, one sack, 1
- 52:10interception and a past deflection.
- 52:12They've got guys that are all over the field and they've got
- 52:15guys that are ferocious and swarm to the football.
- 52:19Corey Heatherman I think deserves the coordinator of the
- 52:22year award. I, I think that's the the
- 52:24Knowles World Knowles award. Pretty sure if he's up for it,
- 52:29if that's the name of it, that that's what he should be up for
- 52:32and should win because this Miami team has been completely
- 52:34different because of him. And the Canes are now state
- 52:37champs because they've been Florida and Florida State and
- 52:41back-to-back years. That has not happened since 2001
- 52:44to 2004 and Miami is back. We'll talk about that schedule
- 52:50here in a minute because it could get a little bit tricky.
- 52:53But for right now that the Hurricanes are back for Florida
- 52:56State, they're on the brink of kind of being in a little bit of
- 53:01trouble. That Alabama win and Week 1 is
- 53:03still one of the most flabbergasting results of the
- 53:06season in my eyes because I I I see Alabama now and I'm like how
- 53:10how did that team look like that up against this Florida State
- 53:13defense And now Florida State has two tough losses
- 53:17back-to-back against in conference opponents.
- 53:20Their best shot to get to the College Football Playoff as an
- 53:22at large bid as they're pretty much done for the ACC
- 53:26championship opportunities. But the Knowles on Saturday were
- 53:31forced to become one-dimensional offensively, which is not good
- 53:35for this Gus Malzahn system. It's really tough to go up
- 53:38against when Florida State has a lead because they're able to
- 53:42stretch you out and and kind of set you up for a lot of stuff.
- 53:45Like they'll they'll run certain sets where they'll, you know,
- 53:48run a run playoff something. But in two or three plays later,
- 53:52it's going to be the same look or they'll run a screen pass off
- 53:55of it or they'll run a, you know, a play action play and and
- 53:58get chunk yards down the field. Balls on does a really good job
- 54:00with that. But when you're down 28 to 3 and
- 54:04everyone on the field knows you want to throw the football, it's
- 54:07tough to scheme up and design anything because the opposing
- 54:11team knows what you're about to do.
- 54:13And as a result, Castellanos goes 25 of 45.
- 54:17You did not want him to throw the football 45 times in this
- 54:20one, But just with the way the game went, that's what he had to
- 54:23do. Of course, were 272 yards with
- 54:26two touchdowns, but he also had two interceptions and a couple
- 54:29of moon balls. That is just a couple of bad
- 54:32plays. You know, late reads, throwing
- 54:34in a double coverage. I I thought that was really
- 54:36critical for them. He did have 57 yards on the
- 54:39ground and I think he's a solid, serviceable quarterback for the
- 54:43Knowles, but I don't think he's someone that is going to like,
- 54:46take them to the level of like College Football Playoff
- 54:49contender. Like he's really good, but you
- 54:52get a mixed bag with him. You get some highs, but you also
- 54:55have the lows. And sometimes the lows are what
- 54:57keep you from winning a football game.
- 54:59And I thought those two turnovers he had earlier in this
- 55:02one were pretty critical. So, you know, Florida State has
- 55:06got a little bit of an easy schedule coming up.
- 55:08They they're at Clemson in Week 11 and they're at Florida in
- 55:12Week 14. Those are their big notable
- 55:13games remaining and with the way Clemson has looked, you know, to
- 55:18start the season, that could be a win that might not be as tough
- 55:20of a match up as you anticipated at Florida.
- 55:23I think is going to be difficult because the Gators are going to
- 55:25be playing at home and that's a rivalry match up.
- 55:28But I mean, I, I, I, I just think this team is kind of
- 55:33teetering on collapsing. If they're not able to get
- 55:36things together here soon. They've got to be more careful
- 55:39with the football and defensively.
- 55:41They've got to quit allowing these chunk plays in the passing
- 55:44game, which you saw a lot of last week against Virginia and
- 55:47you also saw once again this week against Miami.
- 55:50So not ranting out the Knowles yet.
- 55:52I still ranked them in my top 25 this week because of their win
- 55:56over Alabama, which is still a really impressive win.
- 55:59But this is the type of setting where you really figure out what
- 56:02what your team is moving forward for Miami, they're off this
- 56:06week. Then they go to Louisville and
- 56:09they play, excuse me, they they don't go to Louisville.
- 56:11They have Louisville at home in Week 8 and Week 10 they're at
- 56:16SMU. That's a little bit of an
- 56:19interesting one because SMU obviously does have a Kevin
- 56:22Jennings, who's a really good quarterback, but I don't think
- 56:25SMU is that good this season. I, I wasn't buying their stock
- 56:29early in the year. I know I whiffed on a lot of
- 56:31teams heading into the season, but I did not whiff on SMU
- 56:34because I did not believe they were a top 25 team, even though
- 56:36a lot of people told me they were.
- 56:38I think Kevin Jennings is kind of similar to Castellanos, not
- 56:42in size, in structure, but they just make a lot of 5050 plays.
- 56:46And when they go against you, it it, it, it, it hurts you.
- 56:50So that's an interesting one because SMU is talented, they're
- 56:53well coached. But Miami rounds out the year at
- 56:57Virginia Tech and at Pitt, and those are possible cold weather
- 57:00games and those are always the ones that trip up Miami.
- 57:03So I'm intrigued by both of those to round out the the
- 57:06season in Week 13 and work and week 14, respectively.
- 57:09But this is a Miami team that I believe should be undefeated by
- 57:12the end of the season, go to the ACC championship and make the
- 57:15College Football Playoff. They're a well oiled machine.
- 57:18And Corey Heatherman, hats off to you, man.
- 57:20You did a great job this season or you've done a great job this
- 57:24season. I should say that don't want to
- 57:26call Jonah Jinx the Hurricane just yet.
- 57:30All right, Next up, we got Alabama and Vanderbilt.
- 57:33The Tide roll, the Pavia parade #10 Alabama defeats #16
- 57:40Vanderbilt 30 to 14, a score that was significant to some.
- 57:46Jam Miller, I owe you a steak dinner, buddy.
- 57:48That was awesome. That was awesome, man.
- 57:52You know, sitting here on Saturday and and watching all
- 57:55these games, by the way, that that's so fun.
- 57:58You know, I know it might sound lame all the 23 year old post
- 58:01grad sitting on his couch all day watching football, but it is
- 58:05fun. And when you bet on these games
- 58:07and you know, post your pic, you know, post your picks out, have
- 58:09a lot of people tailing, have people investing money in your
- 58:13analysis. There's a little bit of stress
- 58:15to it. And when I gave out A2 unit play
- 58:18of Alabama to cover the 10 1/2, I really needed some magic.
- 58:23And Jam Miller gave me some magic, a score significant to
- 58:26some. Thank you Jam for the big time
- 58:28play. But the pregame, same spot as
- 58:31last year for the Tide. Alabama comes off a big win
- 58:34against Georgia, faces Vanderbilt the next week.
- 58:36Would there be the Georgia hangover like we saw last year?
- 58:40Obviously, the, you know, big hype around this one was because
- 58:44Vanderbilt won last season. But Diego Pavia has done a lot
- 58:48of talking, but he's backed it up with his play to this point,
- 58:51an explosive offense that has lit up the scoreboard this point
- 58:55into the season. Pavia has turned into like kind
- 58:59of the gimmicky quarterback to actually a really solid
- 59:02quarterback this season was playing at a Heisman level.
- 59:05And there was a lot of more fuel heading into this game as well.
- 59:08The day of and the days leading up.
- 59:10As Pavia said, if Vandy played their game and would not be
- 59:13close and was practicing a victory kneel pregame, all these
- 59:18things were combining Johnny Manziel on the sideline looking
- 59:22like a hobo wearing the Diego Pavia jersey there.
- 59:26There was a lot of emotion on Saturday that that's fun, That's
- 59:30fun. Vanderbilt, Alabama.
- 59:33I mean, and, and two, two years ago, this would have been
- 59:36Vanderbilt, Alabama at 12:00 on ESPN or 12:00 on SEC Network.
- 59:41Now you've got college game day going there, you've got an ABC
- 59:45primetime matchup at 3:30. This was awesome.
- 59:49And in terms of storylines, it did not disappoint.
- 59:51But my takeaways here, Alabama, offensively, I thought one in
- 59:55all facets. The score does not reflect the
- 59:58competitiveness of the contest, but it does reflect.
- 1:00:02The momentum of Kaylin de Boer and junior quarterback Ty
- 1:00:05Simpson. I'll admit when I'm wrong,
- 1:00:07folks, I do. I was wrong about Ty Simpson, at
- 1:00:10least to this point in the season.
- 1:00:11I was not impressed with him in week 1 and I was pretty harsh on
- 1:00:14him and I was harsh on him throughout the season.
- 1:00:16I was like, look, this guy's been here four years.
- 1:00:19He's a fourth year junior. I mean, if you've had the the
- 1:00:23Lambo in the garage for four years, why have you been driving
- 1:00:26the the beat up Honda Civic, You know?
- 1:00:30But he's been good and he's really improved since that match
- 1:00:33up against Florida State, where I thought he was a little bit
- 1:00:35over his skis and made a couple of really big mistakes like not
- 1:00:40running for the first down on 4th and seven when he had plenty
- 1:00:44of room, instead trying to force him into a tight window.
- 1:00:46But last week against Georgia, he was nails.
- 1:00:48This week against Vanderbilt, he was nails 23 of 31340 yards, 2
- 1:00:53touchdowns, just one interception.
- 1:00:56But Alabama as a group totaled 486 yards of total offense and
- 1:01:02they really felt like they were in rhythm here.
- 1:01:05And I think the biggest gripe I would have would be, you know,
- 1:01:09executing with inside the 30 yard line as Vanderbilt held
- 1:01:12them to a couple of field goals when when Alabama looked like
- 1:01:17they were going to get into the end zone.
- 1:01:19And a couple of those were on Ty Simpson as well.
- 1:01:21That's a part of maturing and learning as a quarterback.
- 1:01:23He took a big time sack on 1st down that took it from first and
- 1:01:2710 to 2nd and 20. Just can't do stuff like that.
- 1:01:30That's a Backbreaker. Held on to the football way too
- 1:01:33long. But again, he'll learn from
- 1:01:35stuff like that. And I thought they had a really
- 1:01:37impressive drive to end the first half where they go 75
- 1:01:41yards in like 45 seconds. That was a really strong drive
- 1:01:44and they needed that heading into the break.
- 1:01:46But looking on the other side, you know, non quarterback Jam
- 1:01:52Miller goes for 22 carries, 136 yards.
- 1:01:54That very significant touchdown to some.
- 1:01:57I thought they had a pretty good running game on Saturday and
- 1:02:00obviously that that touchdown in those 2230 extra yards were a
- 1:02:05little bit inflated. But Jam Miller did a good job
- 1:02:08Saturday, played his part, did his role well.
- 1:02:11Thought Ryan Williams had his best performance of the season
- 1:02:13in terms of up against the competent opponent. 6
- 1:02:16receptions, 98 yards, a touchdown.
- 1:02:18Had a really nice play down the sideline and obviously had the
- 1:02:22the back end touchdown. I thought he was much better
- 1:02:26than what we saw against Florida State and and what we've seen
- 1:02:30throughout the early part of this season.
- 1:02:32They need Ryan Williams to be that type of player off the line
- 1:02:34of scrimmage because he does create separation.
- 1:02:37Just got to bring that football in.
- 1:02:39He was able to do that Saturday. Jeremy Bernard, they call him
- 1:02:42UNK on the team because he's a little bit older than everyone
- 1:02:46and came over from Washington where he was a part of that
- 1:02:50national championship runner up team and the Huskies.
- 1:02:54But he had five receptions, 82 yards and a touchdown as well.
- 1:02:58That's a guy that I love to have on this Alabama team, a veteran,
- 1:03:02a reliable target, and he's been that throughout the season.
- 1:03:05And Isaiah Horton, the Miami transfer, 4 receptions for 66
- 1:03:09yards. I was making arguments a couple
- 1:03:11of weeks ago that he was the best receiver on this team, but
- 1:03:15I thought you got a balanced attack from all these guys
- 1:03:18combined 15 receptions and over 200 yards of offense that that
- 1:03:23that that's exactly what Alabama needed.
- 1:03:25So really strong performance from everyone offensively.
- 1:03:29I thought Alabama just was able to kind of cruise and do what
- 1:03:32they wanted to outside of a couple of good stops from
- 1:03:36Vanderbilt defensively. Now for Vanderbilt, let me get
- 1:03:41the record straight. I like Diego Pafia.
- 1:03:44I know that might ruffle some people's feathers and some
- 1:03:47people that know me a little bit more personally might be, might
- 1:03:49say, oh, that's right on brand for William, like in the edgy
- 1:03:53kind of bold take guy. I, I like Diego Pafia, man, he,
- 1:03:58he, he might talk a lot and I might not agree with everything
- 1:04:00he says, but man, he believes it.
- 1:04:03He believes what he says. I mean, I think that's a big
- 1:04:07characteristic in a leader and a guy that's a little bit of an
- 1:04:12underdog. If you're going to play that
- 1:04:14role and if you're going to be the quarterback at Vanderbilt,
- 1:04:16you've got to have a chip on your shoulder.
- 1:04:17You're going to have to say some things that might sound
- 1:04:20outlandish to other people, but if you firmly believe it, I'm
- 1:04:24all for it. And Diego Pavia is that guy.
- 1:04:28I know a lot of people are sick of them, but man, I I love that
- 1:04:31mentality. I love that dog in them and I
- 1:04:35think his words kind of went against him this week because
- 1:04:37Vandy did not play their football.
- 1:04:39And I think that's why they lost this game because obviously the
- 1:04:42scoreboard was a little bit more inflated than it actually was.
- 1:04:45But a couple of really key turnovers were on Diego Pavia in
- 1:04:51some critical moments. For the game, Vanderbilt has 198
- 1:04:55yards passing at just five yards an attempt. 3 total turnovers, 2
- 1:05:00inside the red zone, and I I bolded that in my notes. 2
- 1:05:04inside the red zone. Brutal.
- 1:05:07Brutal in trying to beat A-Team like Alabama on the road.
- 1:05:11For the game, Pavia goes 21 of 36198 yards in the air, 1
- 1:05:17touchdown, 2 interceptions and a fumble and had about 58 yards on
- 1:05:22the ground. But Alabama did a really good
- 1:05:23job containing that as well. But the fumble and the red zone
- 1:05:27was really key in the interception was kind of the
- 1:05:30Backbreaker here. That gave Alabama the
- 1:05:31opportunity to go up two possessions as Vanderbilt had
- 1:05:35stopped the Crimson Tide twice and held them to 2 field goals.
- 1:05:39That's what allowed Alabama to get a little bit more of a
- 1:05:41comfortable lead and Vanderbilt had marched all the way down the
- 1:05:45field. Just can't afford type of
- 1:05:48mistakes like that. So I like Pavia and I, I think
- 1:05:53that, you know, he is he, he's good for Vanderbilt because he
- 1:05:56gives them national attention. I mean, no one was getting hyped
- 1:06:00up for, you know, you know, Mike Wright, the guy they had like 3
- 1:06:05or 4 years ago, no straight of Mike Wright, but like no one was
- 1:06:07getting out, you know, up for him.
- 1:06:10But now you're getting the best out of a team like Alabama from
- 1:06:13Vanderbilt because of their quarterback and because of the
- 1:06:16way they've elevated this program.
- 1:06:18Court Lee deserves a ton of credit for making Vanderbilt
- 1:06:21what they are with the type of, you know, academic restraints
- 1:06:26that they have that other schools in the SEC don't.
- 1:06:30I know the SEC is really tough to get into all around now.
- 1:06:33But you know, Vanderbilt, obviously a very prestigious
- 1:06:36school in terms of academics. It's tough to be able to recruit
- 1:06:39a lot of those guys because, you know, a lot of their funding is
- 1:06:43towards athletics or excuse me, towards academics and engineered
- 1:06:47towards that. But Pavia, the underdog kid from
- 1:06:51New Mexico, has put this team on the map and has given them a lot
- 1:06:54of respect. I just thought they had too many
- 1:06:57crucial turnovers and crucial mistakes and they were not able
- 1:07:00to play their football. Another big development and this
- 1:07:03one was Eli Stowers who I think is one of the best tight ends in
- 1:07:09the country and and he had a quiet day, three receptions,
- 1:07:14just 22 yards. Had a number of big time drops
- 1:07:17too. He had the drop on 4th down that
- 1:07:19he had his hand on that. I mean technically end of the
- 1:07:23game for Alabama, but technically end of the game for
- 1:07:26Vanderbilt. They were already down 9 points
- 1:07:27at that point. But you know, getting two hands
- 1:07:30on the football not be able to bring that in was difficult.
- 1:07:33But my take away here, Alabama offensively just did what they
- 1:07:36wanted. Vanderbilt did not play their
- 1:07:38type of football. A couple of critical red zone
- 1:07:41turnovers and, and, and that's what resulted in the Alabama
- 1:07:44win. Looking at the remaining
- 1:07:45schedules for both of these teams coming up, Alabama has
- 1:07:50Tennessee in Week 8 at home. That would be another big time
- 1:07:54win for them. They also play Missouri this
- 1:07:56upcoming week on the road. That's a 12:00 kick.
- 1:07:59The Tide are 5 1/2 point favorites as I currently record
- 1:08:02this. That could get interesting.
- 1:08:03Beau Beula for Missouri has been really impressive this season.
- 1:08:06I I wonder if Penn State, which is they still had him on the
- 1:08:10sideline, but Missouri this week for the, the excuse me, the tide
- 1:08:14and then Tennessee week 8, South Carolina week 9.
- 1:08:17Both of those are going to be, you know, interesting match up.
- 1:08:21South Carolina, very talented and that one's going to be in
- 1:08:25Williams. Bryce Stadium on the road could
- 1:08:27get a little tricky there. LSU week 11.
- 1:08:30That's off of by Oklahoma week 12.
- 1:08:33That's a little bit of a revenge spot from last season.
- 1:08:36And they round out with Auburn on the road.
- 1:08:39The Iron Bowl always gets tricky.
- 1:08:41I'm interested to see what version of the Tigers they get
- 1:08:44at that point in the season. But Alabama right now has
- 1:08:47marched their way back into that College Football Playoff
- 1:08:50conversation and national championship contender
- 1:08:53conversation. Now for Vanderbilt, as it's a
- 1:08:57team that could possibly make their way into the at large
- 1:09:00conversation for the CFP. Let's look at their schedule.
- 1:09:03LSU and Week 8, a tough match up, but they do play.
- 1:09:07That one in Nashville, MO comes in at Week 9.
- 1:09:11That one is also in Nashville. They go at Texas Week 10.
- 1:09:15That seems to be a loss in my eyes that I don't see the
- 1:09:18Longhorns losing that one. When you look at the rest of
- 1:09:22their schedule, they have to have that win over Vanderbilt,
- 1:09:25Auburn in Week 11. That one is in Nashville, but
- 1:09:27then at Tennessee Week 14 could be one of the most intriguing
- 1:09:32games of the season if both teams are two lost teams at the
- 1:09:36time. I think Vanderbilt will lose to
- 1:09:39to Texas. I think Tennessee will lose to
- 1:09:41Alabama 2 teams that are 9 and two that need to get to 10 and
- 1:09:46two to be a College Football Playoff at large candidate.
- 1:09:50That one could be really really interesting Keep an eye out for
- 1:09:53that one. All right some other notable
- 1:09:55takeaways real quick before we wrap things up.
- 1:09:58I'll get my top 25, get my final thoughts on the AP top ranked
- 1:10:02teams to begin the season, but also do want to mention a couple
- 1:10:06of these other games that I don't have, you know, long
- 1:10:09winded takes on. But my whole goal here,
- 1:10:12listening to the show and listening or I guess following
- 1:10:18on all the channels is to be able to familiarize yourself
- 1:10:20with some schools that you might not get to watch a whole lot.
- 1:10:23So Cincinnati exposes an overrated Iowa State team on
- 1:10:27Saturday. The Cyclones I thought were the
- 1:10:31most propped up team in college football.
- 1:10:33They get the win over Kansas State in Week 0.
- 1:10:36But I've kind of slugged through the season since.
- 1:10:39And also the type of quality of wins they have are just not as
- 1:10:42strong when you see what Kansas State now looks like as they
- 1:10:45suffered their fourth loss of the season Saturday against
- 1:10:48Baylor. And like I, I just feel like
- 1:10:51everyone's identity of Iowa State was, well, they, they won
- 1:10:55that game in Ireland to begin the season, but haven't really
- 1:10:58seen much of them since. Now, they did beat Iowa and that
- 1:11:02rivalry match up a couple of weeks later, but I thought Iowa
- 1:11:06State was overrated. I, I think Rocco Beck is a solid
- 1:11:09quarterback, but I don't think they've been able to hit on
- 1:11:12those receivers like they had last year with Noel and Higgins.
- 1:11:16Xavier Townsend, the transfer from UCF is solid, but I don't
- 1:11:19think he's near the level of what they had last year.
- 1:11:22So that's been tough. And then you lose, you know, 22
- 1:11:26cornerbacks for the season heading into this week.
- 1:11:29I, I thought this was a prime setup for Cincinnati.
- 1:11:32It was one of my paddle locks plays at Cincinnati money line
- 1:11:36as this was an odd line that a lot of people pounced on Iowa
- 1:11:39State for. I loved it.
- 1:11:41Thank you public for taking Iowa State because Brennan Sorsby is
- 1:11:45a quarterback you need to know about for the Bearcats, 13 of 25
- 1:11:49for 214 yards and two touchdowns in the air, 64 yards and a
- 1:11:53touchdown on the ground. A very underrated quarterback in
- 1:11:56college football. Cincinnati lost in Week 1 to
- 1:12:00Nebraska and Kansas City. But other than that, to have
- 1:12:04strung together a couple of impressive wins, put up 40
- 1:12:07points last week against Kansas. They get Iowa State this past
- 1:12:11Saturday. Cincinnati a little bit of a
- 1:12:14team to watch out for. I I ranked them this week in my
- 1:12:17poll. I'll tell you where here in just
- 1:12:18a minute, But another team from the Big 12 that for some odd
- 1:12:23reason a lot of people I surround myself with do not
- 1:12:26understand is a good team. Texas Tech needs to be on your
- 1:12:29radar, folks. They just knocked off undefeated
- 1:12:32Houston 35 to 11 on the road. Texas Tech is a good team.
- 1:12:37I talked about in the offseason, but Texas Tech is one of these
- 1:12:42new age NIL teams. They put a ton of money and ton
- 1:12:45of investments into this group and they kind of paved their
- 1:12:48way. But they're good.
- 1:12:51Baron Morton at quarterback, 345 yards and a touchdown on 28 to
- 1:12:5640 passes. Very similar to Brendan Sorsby,
- 1:12:58Underrated as can be. And Morton returned in this
- 1:13:02game. And now Texas Tech was off last
- 1:13:04week, but the last time we saw him was against Utah.
- 1:13:06Morton got knocked out with a neck injury, returned in this
- 1:13:11one and was absolutely nails. They've got a great quarterback.
- 1:13:15They've got a really solid rushing attack.
- 1:13:17Jacoby Williams goes 19 carries for 107 yards and two
- 1:13:21touchdowns, and this is a group that lost Quenchin Joyner before
- 1:13:25the season. Joyner was supposed to be the
- 1:13:26starter, the transfer from USC. He's out for the season.
- 1:13:31Williams has taken over the spot and he has been great. 19
- 1:13:35carries Saturday for two touchdowns and 107 yards.
- 1:13:39That's a balanced attack. And CJ Douglas 7 receptions for
- 1:13:43114 yards. Was one of the most underrated
- 1:13:46receivers last year. Had a strong performance in the
- 1:13:48Liberty Bowl against Arkansas and the connection between
- 1:13:52Morton and Douglas has been really impressive.
- 1:13:55The offense is really good, but let me tell you about this
- 1:13:58defense because this Red Raiders defense is a machine, allowing
- 1:14:03just 10 1/2 points to power 4 opponents that have a combined
- 1:14:07record, folks of eight and two. Those only two losses are coming
- 1:14:11from the Red Raiders. This is a really solid defense.
- 1:14:16Eric Rodriguez at linebacker all over the field Saturday.
- 1:14:20An interception, a pass deflection, a handful of
- 1:14:23tackles, one of the best linebackers in the country.
- 1:14:26This is a very, very good Red Raiders team.
- 1:14:29And when you look at the logo and look at the conference, you
- 1:14:32might say William, Texas Tech isn't the 12th best team in the
- 1:14:37country. Get out of here.
- 1:14:40Oh, but you haven't watched this team play.
- 1:14:44You didn't watch Utah Texas Tech 2 weeks ago, you didn't watch
- 1:14:48Texas Tech Houston Saturday night.
- 1:14:52So don't tell me that Texas Tech is not a good team because they
- 1:14:56are one. They are a good football team
- 1:14:59and they deserve to be a top 15 team in the in the country.
- 1:15:04And right now they are in the driver's seat for the Big 12
- 1:15:07championship. They are in the driver's seat to
- 1:15:09be the bid for the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff.
- 1:15:13Keep an eye on those Red Raiders in Lubbock, TX.
- 1:15:18Couple more games, we'll have one in the ACC now.
- 1:15:21Virginia gets their second straight overtime win in the ACC
- 1:15:25over Louisville. Their defense was big in this.
- 1:15:2815 sacks, a touchdown on an interception and a fumble
- 1:15:32recovery. I had Louisville and this game,
- 1:15:34minus the 6 1/2. I thought they were really
- 1:15:37undisciplined and some key moments and an overtime.
- 1:15:40I don't know why they settled for three points when they're 3
- 1:15:43yards away. I mean, Virginia had been able
- 1:15:46to move the football all game long.
- 1:15:48I don't know why Louisville settled so quickly for the field
- 1:15:53goal. I thought their play calling was
- 1:15:56surprisingly conservative when they were again 3 yards away
- 1:16:00from the end zone. Regardless.
- 1:16:02Tony Elliott, a guy that was on the hot seat heading into the
- 1:16:06season as a guy that a lot of people didn't think could get it
- 1:16:09done at Virginia. Former offensive coordinator for
- 1:16:12the Clemson Tigers back in the day has rattled off 2 really big
- 1:16:16wins in the ACC and Virginia A-Team to to watch for in this
- 1:16:21conference as they've only got one loss.
- 1:16:23It was to NC State. But you know, if if one throw
- 1:16:27goes the other way, this is an undefeated Virginia football
- 1:16:30team right now. Keep an eye on the Cavaliers.
- 1:16:33Moved into my top 20 this week. Miller Moss by the way, for
- 1:16:38Louisville, tougher than a weekend at your in laws.
- 1:16:41He's horrible. I can't stand watching him.
- 1:16:44Finally, we'll go to the Big 10. Obviously, Ohio State got a big
- 1:16:47win over Minnesota. Not much to talk about in that
- 1:16:50one, but Malik, Washington and Maryland, Oh my gosh, collapse
- 1:16:55to Washington. Oh this was so frustrating to
- 1:16:58watch. Now I had the Terps plus the
- 1:17:00five and a half they covered with ease, but they led by 17 in
- 1:17:04this one before allowing 21 fourth quarter points to the
- 1:17:07Huskies and Washington quarterback Damon Williams
- 1:17:10junior, another guy, an underrated quarterback that you
- 1:17:12need to know about. 329 yards of total offense. 2 touchdowns.
- 1:17:17Rebounded from an early interception in this one.
- 1:17:19Very well Was composed down the stretch.
- 1:17:22Orchestrated a couple of big drives for the Huskies late and
- 1:17:26then Maryland. I love this team.
- 1:17:28I wanted to rank them so bad this weekend.
- 1:17:30I was ready to do it. I thought they were going to get
- 1:17:32a big win at home, but they can't finish the game.
- 1:17:37Blake Washington, the true freshman quarterback for this
- 1:17:40Terps team, is really, really strong.
- 1:17:42Had a couple of growing pains Saturday, but goes 30 of 49 for
- 1:17:45219 yards and a touchdown. This kid is going to be special
- 1:17:50and I hope that Maryland is able to keep them this offseason.
- 1:17:52I know that's a crazy statement to make, but excuse me.
- 1:17:59But it's just the world we live in in 2025 that you have to hope
- 1:18:04and pray these guys stay, especially when they're at a non
- 1:18:08power traditional school for football.
- 1:18:11But Maryland's got a ton of young players that have played
- 1:18:13at a high level all year long. The Lake Washington's one of
- 1:18:16them. He did his part in the first
- 1:18:18half, but I thought Maryland got a little bit too conservative in
- 1:18:22the second-half, kind of sat on the football.
- 1:18:25And when their run game goes for 43 yards for the entirety of the
- 1:18:30game, it's going to be tough to run the clock out in this one.
- 1:18:33So credit Washington for finding a way to win.
- 1:18:35Big win for Jet Fish coming off a loss to Ohio State last week.
- 1:18:38Damon Williams again was nails in the final moments, but this
- 1:18:43was 1. Maryland should have won, but
- 1:18:45they couldn't get it done. So those are my Week 6
- 1:18:48takeaways. I'll now give my Week 7 poll as
- 1:18:53we head into the new week of college football.
- 1:18:55As always, I put this out on the social media channels, so if you
- 1:18:59want to see them updated every Sunday, just follow at the
- 1:19:02Padifax. So at #25 Florida State 24,
- 1:19:07Memphis the Tigers 6 and O the first bowl eligible team in
- 1:19:11college football. Big win over Tulsa.
- 1:19:14A very impressive catch as well. You'll have to go check it out.
- 1:19:19A1 handed snag for one of the Memphis receivers.
- 1:19:23Can't remember his name off the top of my head right now.
- 1:19:25Wish I had it in front of me, but very impressive catch.
- 1:19:28Go go check that out. Tigers 24 Cincinnati moves into
- 1:19:32the pole for the first time this year.
- 1:19:34They're #23 I was impressed with their win over Iowa State.
- 1:19:38I think this is a group that has strung off a couple of
- 1:19:40impressive wins. And with all the upsets last
- 1:19:42week, I had to figure out some teams to put in here.
- 1:19:45Cincinnati gets a bid, and right ahead of them is the team that
- 1:19:49beat them early in the season on a neutral site, and that is
- 1:19:52Nebraska at 22. They beat Michigan State this
- 1:19:56past weekend, a Michigan State team that I think is a little
- 1:19:59bit overlooked. They deserve some respect, but.
- 1:20:02Dylan Rayola didn't have the cleanest game in this one, but
- 1:20:04again, so many upsets and with Cincinnati being a ranked team,
- 1:20:07I have to put Nebraska in here. So the Cornhuskers at 22, BYU at
- 1:20:1321, they make their first appearance in the poll.
- 1:20:15For me, I am not ranked them in weeks past, but they were pretty
- 1:20:19dominant in the win over Pit, even though the Panthers came
- 1:20:22back and covered pretty late and that was significant to some.
- 1:20:24Not me, but to some, I do apologize if you were on that
- 1:20:28BYU side at #20 it's Vanderbilt. I did not move them this week.
- 1:20:33I didn't think Saturday warranted dropping them out of
- 1:20:35the top 25 or or moving them down.
- 1:20:38I thought there was the type of performance that I expected a
- 1:20:41close loss that was a little bit inflated by a late game
- 1:20:44touchdown. That was significant to some and
- 1:20:46me, which I'm totally for. But Vanderbilt, I still believe
- 1:20:50is a top 20 team with the way they played on the road and a
- 1:20:54group that I think will have a lot of opportunities in front of
- 1:20:56them #19 Virginia just talked about them #18 Arizona State,
- 1:21:01they were off this past week. They'll get a battle upcoming
- 1:21:05with Utah. That's going to be a big time
- 1:21:07matchup for both teams. 17 Illinois, the fighting of line.
- 1:21:11I were off this week, but they will host Ohio State this
- 1:21:16upcoming weekend. That will be a big 1.
- 1:21:18Notre Dame moves up to 16. They beat Boise State 28 to 7.
- 1:21:22A little bit of a underwhelming result, but Boise State does
- 1:21:26have a pretty good defensive line led by Virgin Morgan, who
- 1:21:31was really, really impressive last year.
- 1:21:32The Broncos led the country and tackles for loss last season
- 1:21:36haven't been as good, but it's still the respectable team and a
- 1:21:4121 point win up against the respectable team.
- 1:21:43Notre Dame moves up 15. Missouri will get a real test to
- 1:21:48see how good they are this weekend against Alabama, but
- 1:21:50Beau Purbullah been one of the most impressive quarterbacks in
- 1:21:54the SEC. Michigan moves up to N 14.
- 1:21:57They got a little bit of an underwhelming win over
- 1:22:00Wisconsin, but a wins, a win and Michigan moves up #13 Georgia
- 1:22:05Tech. What a world we live in that
- 1:22:07Georgia Tech is the 13th best team in the country.
- 1:22:09I do worry a little bit about this team because I think some
- 1:22:12of their wins are now a little bit less than what we had
- 1:22:16considered. Colorado and Week 1 does not
- 1:22:19look as strong as it does now. And Clemson a couple of weeks
- 1:22:24ago also does not look as strong as it does now #12 Texas Tech.
- 1:22:29I did a lot of talking about them earlier.
- 1:22:31This is a good football team, folks.
- 1:22:33Don't be caught on the wrong end #11 Tennessee.
- 1:22:36They were off this week, but they will face Arkansas this
- 1:22:39weekend. The Razorbacks coming off of
- 1:22:41firing their coach, defensive staff, Bobby Petrino takes over.
- 1:22:45Could be an interesting one if Arkansas is able to string
- 1:22:48together some offense and #10LSU.
- 1:22:51I really need to see more from them in the coming weeks.
- 1:22:54They'll get a match up with Vanderbilt, which we'll get to
- 1:22:56see what they look like in that one.
- 1:22:58But for the time being, they've, you know, for the most part done
- 1:23:02their job. Ole Miss on the road was a tough
- 1:23:04game and they lost narrowly. LSU with that roster still a top
- 1:23:08ten team. Georgia moves up to #9 the
- 1:23:11tradition like none other. They dominate after a tough
- 1:23:15loss, and they disposed of Kentucky pretty easily.
- 1:23:19You had backup quarterbacks playing in the third quarter of
- 1:23:21this one. Number 8 Alabama, even though
- 1:23:25they got a big win, they're unmoved because I can't really
- 1:23:28do much with the remaining teams as I had them all ranked in this
- 1:23:31order. And all of these teams are still
- 1:23:33undefeated #7 Indiana, 6, Oklahoma.
- 1:23:37They get the win over Kent State this weekend.
- 1:23:39Hawkins quarterback, did the job.
- 1:23:42Kent State's not a good football team, but I still put up 44
- 1:23:45points and look pretty strong offensively #5 Ole Miss, they
- 1:23:49were off this week. They'll host Washington State in
- 1:23:52one of the oddest games of college football in the 2025
- 1:23:55season this upcoming week. Texas A&M at #4 they knock off
- 1:23:59Mississippi State. The Bulldogs had no answers
- 1:24:03offensively. Texas A&M's defense is really,
- 1:24:06really strong, folks. And Mike Elko has done a great
- 1:24:08job with this team #3 Oregon. That's where we get to the
- 1:24:13movement because Miami was #3 last week, Oregon #3 they very
- 1:24:17well could be #2 or #1 I, I really all three of these
- 1:24:21upcoming teams are interchangeable.
- 1:24:23But Oregon, I think, has a very impressive win over Penn State.
- 1:24:27Even though we saw what that team looked like this past
- 1:24:29weekend, Oregon is still a really good team.
- 1:24:31And they have disposed of some very bad teams very quickly #2
- 1:24:36Ohio State, the reigning national champions, got the win
- 1:24:39over Minnesota 42 to 3. They'll travel to Champaign to
- 1:24:43take on Illinois this weekend. I like the Buckeyes in that one,
- 1:24:47but they have been dethroned as the number one team because
- 1:24:50Miami is now the best team in the country. the Hurricanes have
- 1:24:54the best resume, the best eye test.
- 1:24:58This is a damn good football team and they're number one in
- 1:25:02my Week 7 poll. All right, rounding things out
- 1:25:05with my final thoughts. I know a lot of people have
- 1:25:08given me grief over the last couple of weeks about my Clemson
- 1:25:12pick and how I evaluated quarterbacks like Arch Manning
- 1:25:15and stuff like that. Look, when you do all this
- 1:25:19offseason prep, you just look at the names, the numbers and what
- 1:25:22you've seen. And what I saw from Clemson last
- 1:25:26year was a group that played really well towards the end of
- 1:25:29the season, I thought gave Texas a big time fight and Kate
- 1:25:33Klumnick looked the part. Returned a lot of players.
- 1:25:37I thought that was going to be a team that was going to waltz his
- 1:25:39way in. The ACC obviously didn't happen.
- 1:25:42Penn State, a team that returned a ton of production, had a
- 1:25:46manageable schedule. Obviously they have not lived up
- 1:25:50to the expectations. Texas as well, Texas and Penn
- 1:25:54State and Clemson, my top three teams in the country heading
- 1:25:57into the season, all unranked after week 6 of college
- 1:26:01football. It's a, it's a tough shot in the
- 1:26:03heart. I I do admit it, But there have
- 1:26:06been a lot of ones, a lot of games, a lot of teams.
- 1:26:09I've been right on. It goes both ways, folks.
- 1:26:11But I think the thing we are starting to notice, or at least
- 1:26:14I'm starting to notice now, is that with the transfer portal
- 1:26:18and NIL, it's going to be harder and harder to predict the top
- 1:26:22teams year in and year out because there's so much roster
- 1:26:24turnover. And I think we saw a little bit
- 1:26:26of that last year. And obviously there's always a
- 1:26:28top ten team in the country that completely flunks.
- 1:26:31I don't think we've seen this type of level of like the
- 1:26:35consensus top four or five teams all dropping this quickly from
- 1:26:40the field. I think it's it just shows where
- 1:26:42college football is. And that's not a bad thing, by
- 1:26:45the way, like a lot of people hit on NIL in the transfer
- 1:26:48portal and say, oh, it's so bad. It's it's good that we get new
- 1:26:52teams and new powers and, and, and freshness each season.
- 1:26:57I mean, Texas Tech, I haven't been relevant in years and
- 1:27:02they're a top 12 team in my eyes right now.
- 1:27:05Indiana, two years ago, Indiana was looking for basketball
- 1:27:09season. They can barely fill up the
- 1:27:10stadium. Now.
- 1:27:11This is a team that is competing for the College Football Playoff
- 1:27:14once again this season. The freshness and the newness of
- 1:27:18college football with the transfer portal, NIL makes it
- 1:27:22more difficult to rank these teams.
- 1:27:24But but man, it makes for some really fun matchups and really
- 1:27:28fun storylines through the course of the season.
- 1:27:32All right, that's episode 131 of the Padfax.
- 1:27:34I appreciate you listening along with me.

- 1:28:02So I don't know how much time I'm going to have week in and
- 1:28:05week out to produce these podcasts right now.
- 1:28:07I really, I kind of need a Co host.
- 1:28:09It'd be a lot easier if I had someone to talk to.
- 1:28:11Like the prep work. I, I, I will, I, I love doing
- 1:28:14and I do it. But sitting here and talking for
- 1:28:17like an hour and 30 minutes, I've got to be mentally sharp.
- 1:28:19And sometimes after the weekends, like it's just been a
- 1:28:22long, you know, long week of work and, and, and making
- 1:28:26graphics and all this stuff. It's it's tough to be able to
- 1:28:29sit here and talk to myself for an hour and 30 minutes, but
- 1:28:34other than that, make sure you're following at the Padda
- 1:28:36fax on Instagram and Twitter, at TP fax on sports on TikTok and
