- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, share, and embrace the power of influence in your life.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the iM team series and your daily influence and today I'm going to be tackling something that many of us start to feel especially when we re-engage after the summer after holidays or if we're in too much work motor actually what I'm going to call it as too much influence mode and
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: We're diving into a topic that's overlooked and I think the best way for me to state it is influence fatigue and it's not about leaders burning out so much as it's about the exhaustion that comes when we're always influencing that doesn't just mean leaders.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: can be any person.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't just mean at work.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: It could be at home with friends in any situation where you find yourself influencing other humans or situations around you.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's really important that we try to catch these things early to veer us off a path that could take us into a more negative place, a place that can influence us to not be as impactful and positive and responsible as we really hope we can be and we strive to be as individuals.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: the weight of constant influence.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Most of us dismiss the fact that we are continuously influential.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't about being an influencer in social media or a leader.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's about being human and influence shows up everywhere and it's the pressure to guide persuade, respond in the right
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: It wears us down and the things that we can do that help us in these instances is well for one set clear boundaries and make sure that for ourselves we understand our influence understand what our goal and our mission is with our influence and not by overthinking it but by being comfortable with who we are and setting boundaries around who we are as humans in those different areas of influence that we find ourselves home.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: work, friends, social settings, whatever it might be.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: And oftentimes, allowing yourself just to be present, you don't always have to engage.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: You don't always have to be the one out front.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: You don't always have to be the one that supports and carries those around you.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes, you can just be present and go along for the ride.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: And that can be uncomfortable.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: I understand.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Often, especially a work when I am delegating away some things that I'm habitually used to taking responsibility for and that transition, which by the way should be an improvement for you, can be hard, but slow down.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: all that yourself to be present because the present is the best time for you to embrace.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever it is you're trying to do, and to check yourself and to hold yourself accountable for that behavior.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then while we're going through this, and actually talking about this fatigue, it's looking for those subtle signs of fatigue that can challenge us.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: Often times show
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Or just a quiet withdrawal where you're pulling yourself away from those engagements with people who create that fatigue and they may see it, they may or may not say something about it, you may see it, you may be doing it subconsciously.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: Others may see it.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: And the way to approach that is, you know, if you feel this way, ask that somebody close to you, ask those around you that are in your area of influence, to give you some feedback on your behavior, to give you some feedback on any change they may see.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're really strong or you want to be really strong, ask what you can do to improve.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard for a lot of us, but it's so helpful to get that input from the eyes of others.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: We can't see ourselves acting.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: We can't see our body language.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: We can't see our tone in the moment, contextually all the time.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: What we feel isn't always what we portray.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it's good to get that feedback.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: influence, but you can also erode empathy in the connection that we have with others if gone unchecked.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: A loss of empathy can really damage our ability to be positive and responsible with our influence.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Empathy is such a big part of being human.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's not something that we can really practice.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: all the time, but it's something that's needed as we move in and out of our interactions in the different areas of influence we find ourselves and those challenges we have with other humans and also by the way ourselves.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: Create space for you to recover from that fatigue, you rest reflection, delegation, and make those spaces something that are a habit, not an exception,
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: have them be part of or in your toolbox of ways that you maintain your internal quietness and your internal stability.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: And hold yourself accountable to when you start to feel that fatigue, you start to feel that anxious or uncomfortable feeling that comes with the fatigue of our influence.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: And then reframe your influence as a ripple.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: One intentional act at a time, not monumental.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't take huge influence to move a marker, but it does take consistent influence and consistent influence requires us to be our best self and to check ourselves.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: Last, we become inconsistent and erratic or reactionary.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: So take the time to be with yourself.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: Take the time to understand when you're feeling
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: fatigued from what your area of influence brings you day in and day out.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: And ensure that it doesn't mean that you're creating opportunities for failure instead of opportunities for positivity, responsibility and success.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Influence fatigue doesn't mean we're failing.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: It means we're human.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: And by setting these boundaries and holding ourselves accountable to these boundaries, we're watching
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: with more intention, more positive and responsible intention, instead of force or reaction, and reserve our energy.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: And deep in the impact we have on others.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for being with me today on daily influence.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: And until next time, remember, influence is most powerful when it's sustainable, responsible and positive.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you have a great day.
