- 0:00Now Up next for Dan Hurley's crew the second meeting of the season with De
- 0:03Paul's Blue Demons. Smorrow Night Win Trust Arena. Our coverage Wednesday Night,
- 0:09Pardon me. Our coverage begins with the Hard Auto Group countdown to tip off
- 0:12at eight thirty here along the Yukon Sports Networks, Varsity Network GAP and Varsity
- 0:17Network dot Com. So, Dan, you're facing a team that's really struggling
- 0:22here three and twenty. They've lost all twelve of their games. The coach
- 0:26was let go. They got an interim coach, Matt Brady, a New
- 0:30Jersey guy, had in the Heights guy. He'd been at Uuri and Wagner
- 0:33and Saint Jose and LaSalle and was an assistant at Maryland. What's he going
- 0:38through do you think? I mean, you've never been an interim coach,
- 0:41but starting out with a team in the middle of the season, that's got
- 0:44to be one of the toughest assignments for any coach. Yeah, well,
- 0:48Matt, you know Matt, Matt Scott. Obviously you know the head coaching
- 0:51experience and a fast wealth of experience in the in coaching you know, college,
- 0:59and you know it's obviously not an easy situation. But you know you
- 1:03could see in the you know, the first couple of games, uh,
- 1:07you know, after the change, you know, just a renewed spirit just
- 1:11with different leadership there. Obviously, you know, Tony's an excellent coach,
- 1:15and uh, somebody's gonna be lucky enough to to get Tony on their staff,
- 1:22you know, in the off season here he's he's one of the most
- 1:26respected coaches in our profession, Tony Stubblefield. So you know, Matt's got
- 1:32uh, you know, he's got some good players, he's he's got a
- 1:36he's got some veteran staff to lean on, and and you know, there's
- 1:40not a lot of season to go, you know, so without a lot
- 1:44of season to go, I think you can you know, kind of convinced
- 1:48the group to uh, to put their best foot forward. And uh,
- 1:52obviously they're all playing for something. Uh nowadays, with the transient nature and
- 1:57the freedom that the players have, uh, good performances down the stretch could
- 2:00lead to uh, you know, opportunity for them. So you know,
- 2:06I think that the mindset is obviously shifted in terms of how players think,
- 2:10and I think there's definitely some motivational things that Matt can use. Yeah,
- 2:15and when you started out in this the college thing as a head coach,
- 2:17you were coming out of high school. Obviously, uh, you went to
- 2:21will you went to Rutgers first, but you know, your first job's at
- 2:23Wagner. And then when you went to Uri starting out, what's the first
- 2:29thing that you try to instill in a group of players when you get them,
- 2:31they see you for the first time and they go, Okay, here's
- 2:35our new head coach. What were you trying to instill to get guys going
- 2:39in the right direction? Yeah? I think, you know, I think
- 2:45initially the first thing you're you're trying to kind of get across is that like,
- 2:49uh, you know, I'm going to invest everything I got in in
- 2:53you guys, but that the standards are going to be really, really high.
- 2:59So you know, be careful what you wish for. You want somebody
- 3:01that's really going to be committed to you and really going to build a relationship
- 3:07with you and really push you to get better every single day. But I'm
- 3:10also gonna, you know, hold you to a level of accountability that's going
- 3:15to make you very uncomfortable. And then and at the same time, I'm
- 3:19gonna uh, you provide for you all the resources, uh for you to
- 3:23be successful both with your individual career and uh and and with the organization.
- 3:29Uh you know, I remember being at Wagner and and uh you know that
- 3:34first week it's like, uh you know, I think, uh, you
- 3:38know, you're raising money to improve the locker room, You're putting them through
- 3:40the hardest workouts that they've ever experienced in their life. And uh and then
- 3:46also you know, building relationships with them off the court where uh you know,
- 3:52they start to know that you really care. Dan Hurley with US to
- 3:55U com men's basketball coaches show Huskies get the Paul Wednesday than Marquette on the
- 4:00weekend. Use the term push pushing guys, What does that actually mean?
- 4:06You're talking physically, you're talking mentally. Is it all around kind of finding
- 4:11what the limits are for these players to get them to the best levels,
- 4:15the highest levels they can be at. Yeah, I think you're pushing these
- 4:18guys. I think for me is I was trying to help them develop a
- 4:25well rounded process to be at their best version of themselves, both as a
- 4:32player person somebody you could think and execute and perform at a high level.
- 4:39And that includes so many different things, not just how we practice and prepare
- 4:44on the court, and the extra work they do away from practice on skills
- 4:48and shooting at the weight room, sleep, nutrition, what you're reading,
- 4:53what you're listening to. You know, your relationships, both your family and
- 5:00and your friendships. Uh, you know those got to be I think,
- 5:02you know, in the proper space, meditation, visualization, uh, you
- 5:08know, journaling. There's so many different things. It's such a competitive industry
- 5:13and it's so little separates one team from another, one player from another,
- 5:17that it's really going to be these these these small habits that you've built up
- 5:21to put you in an absolute best position to h to perform at your absolute
- 5:26best and at your highest energy in it. So your process has got to
- 5:30be highest level. And you know, the problem is a lot of young
- 5:35people and most humans, uh, they don't want to do all the things
- 5:39that are required to be at their best. They want to cut corners.
- 5:42I just happened to be the person that's there to stop the people from cutting
- 5:46the corners. That's a good way to put it, and I think it
- 5:49manifests itself. I watched the guys and the way they work, and you
- 5:53know, practices, pre games, uh, you know, day of game
- 5:58morning stuff. You know, guys like Jayden Ross, they're still working hard.
- 6:02I go see them going full tilt, the solo balls, the freshmen,
- 6:06the young guys who you know, maybe aren't playing like big roles yet
- 6:11for this team, but they seem to be working at a level that is,
- 6:15uh, that is very high. And I think that's impressive because you
- 6:18know, maybe maybe a guy that says, well, I don't know if
- 6:20I'll even play tonight, how am I going to get prepared or why should
- 6:24I get prepared? That doesn't seem to be part of the the the m
- 6:28O for these guys. Yeah, I mean that's so that's unacceptable. It
- 6:32should be unacceptable based on the fact that you know, nowadays college players have
- 6:39so much, so much invested in them the way we travel, uh,
- 6:45the facilities, uh, the n I L the staff that they have around
- 6:48them to help them improve. Uh, you know, the resources that that
- 6:54Yukon invest in them. Uh was that too uh too much? As given
- 6:59much as expected? Right? I mean, and since the players are given
- 7:01more than ever uh, the expectations for what they do on a daily basis
- 7:08relative to uh to improving our culture and developing as players and to keeping Yukon
- 7:13basketball as strong as possible. Uh. They owe that to the program,
- 7:17They owe that to everyone involved in this in this operation. Uh. You
- 7:23know, I'm not Uh, I'm not an entitlement I'm not big on entitlement
- 7:28and uh you know, and spoiled kids and uh and and just telling them
- 7:32what they want to hear and being a yes man. So uh, you
- 7:36know, these guys are given every resource, uh you know, not for
- 7:41them to just be here, but for them to make you kind a great
- 7:45program. And uh and I hold them accountable for that. All right,
- 7:48Dan, holies with us would take a quick break. I got a story
- 7:51at Saint Anthony's story for you. We're gonna come back with that, and
- 7:55we're gonna talk about a little more about the Georgetown game and look ahead to
- 7:59DePaul and more market as well as we continue. This is the Yukon Men's
- 8:01Basketball Coaches Show from Liarfield
