- 0:40SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: And Tristan, it's a very special episode.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: We have a lot to discuss, but before we get to any of that, your Texas Tech Red Raiders are in the Big 12 championship for the first time in our treasured history.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: What's to do when Texas Tech wins?
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: What do we have to do here on this podcast?
- 1:12SPEAKER_06: You have to play the song and play it loud and proud.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: This song means so much to me.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Anyway, and now it just means so much more that your Red Raiders are going to be in Arlington.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: We're playing the song.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: Steven, that song was used to wake y'all up for 7 a.m.
- 1:55SPEAKER_06: not 7 a.m.
- 1:55SPEAKER_06: games, 11 a.m.
- 1:56SPEAKER_06: football games in loving games.
- 1:58SPEAKER_04: We woke up at like 60 minutes.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: 7 a.m.
- 2:01SPEAKER_06: As the kids would say.
- 2:02SPEAKER_06: 6-7.
- 2:02SPEAKER_06: 6-7.
- 2:03SPEAKER_06: We'd I like how timely that is.
- 2:05SPEAKER_06: And um we would you know crack open a soda and drop a raw egg in it while that song played.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: That's what that's for the youths out there.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: That's called the breakfast fear.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Crack a cold Keystone light, crack a raw egg, and get the day started.
- 2:19SPEAKER_06: And that's how we made it to our 11 a.m.
- 2:21SPEAKER_06: games.
- 2:22SPEAKER_06: And just just realize where we are now, okay?
- 2:25SPEAKER_06: You're number four in the country, just as these rankings have dropped, and we're heading to the Big 12 championship game.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: As you're playing that uh song that's so dear to us, I just wanted to make a little full circle moment for us, and as I'm sure many of the fans and the audience.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: It feels wonderful.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: Job's not done yet.
- 2:41SPEAKER_04: We have a we're gonna talk about the Big 12 matchup, the rematch with the BYU Cougars, but we have to start with breaking news because today uh we got the wonderful, wonderful news uh that our fearless leader, uh Joey McGuire, has been extended by Texas Tech University as the head football coach through 2032$7 million check a year with heavy incentives.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: Um no notes.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: Perfect deal, perfect coach, perfect timing, perfect everything.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: No notes.
- 3:16SPEAKER_06: Anything for our deer leader.
- 3:18SPEAKER_06: He makes the weather shine, he makes the rain fall, he can do no wrong.
- 3:23SPEAKER_06: He is he is the king, buddy.
- 3:25SPEAKER_06: And I like you said, dude, a perfect deal for him, as you said.
- 3:28SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, honestly, fairly modest when it comes to a yearly pay, whenever you compare it to some of the top dogs in the sport.
- 3:33SPEAKER_06: Uh, but like you said, with the incentives, uh, that allows him to go out and earn it too, uh, which he has done.
- 3:40SPEAKER_06: But also, do you think this is also a reflection of Joey McGuire?
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: I mean, I'm not gonna sit here and act like he's, you know, being all the modest guy, you know, taking home a measly$7 million paycheck per year.
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: But don't you think he kind of realizes what the name of the game is?
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: The less amount of money that he can pull for himself just leaves all the more to go to the coaching staff, and of course, inevitably the program with the NIL players and everything else that goes along with that uh smoothie that makes this beautiful season happen.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: With so many selfish characters that are leading the sport and are the faces of this sport, Lane Kiffin, Greg Sankey, you do get a Joey Maguire, a a a human that is that is where his feet are, that is humble, that uh loves where he's at, that is succeeding where he's at, and realizes hey, things are pretty good right now.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: I don't think I need you know what uh apparently a lot of these other coaches want, which is a historically top five college football job, yada yada yada.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: Joey Maguire is perfect for this school, he's perfect for this team, and he is doing unprecedented things at this university right now.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: I I don't know if we could be in a better spot.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: I I honestly I don't know.
- 5:09SPEAKER_06: And obviously, this was met with all sorts of applause from either the talking heads or the general ball-knowing uh CFB fan bases out there, but also, of course, you do get critics as you do with anything.
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: There are people out there saying, Oh, no one wanted the guy, so uh what what's tech doing?
- 5:26SPEAKER_06: Um, I'll obviously try to get your thoughts on that, but I wanted to just go ahead and reiterate Joey McGuire was never going anywhere, and it's obviously people the first thing people jump to, and I understand that oh, that's coach speak when he says this is he's never gonna have another job, this is where he's gonna die.
- 5:43SPEAKER_06: But I've always said that that's not really normal coach speak.
- 5:47SPEAKER_06: Saying you're going to die at a job, I've never heard that before from another coach.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: And I know that could be just like very melodramatic from Joey's side if he's you know playing that actor part, actors.
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: Um, he uh but he's he's obviously completely honest about it, okay?
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: And I I just want to see what your thoughts on from uh from the jeering happening, mostly from people that like to wear a darker shade of orange on Saturday.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's the only that's the only people I've seen uh call out that here's the difference Joey Maguire is actually who he is, is actually who he says he is profound.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: He is the person that everybody that everything that comes out of his mouth is genuine, everything.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: And sometimes it's a little cheerleader-y, but as far as his future, as far as how much he loves the university, as as far as how much he invests and loves his players, everything that man says is genuine.
- 6:51SPEAKER_04: And you cannot say that about a lot of college college football coaches, you just can't, because ultimately there's something in the back of their head that is saying, hey, if that job is offered to me, I'm going to take it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: Joey Maguire is very, very happy with where he's at.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: And he realizes it.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: That's why I don't know if you guys know this, but during these coaching searches and during, you know, when these teams that just fired their coach are putting out feelers to get their replacement, they reach out to their agents, and their agents then say, Hey, actually, yes, he would be open to start talking about a conversation about, you know, let's let's get some numbers going, let's hear NIL investment, let's talk about coordinators.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Joey McGuire has told his agent to deny everything.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: Deny, deny, deny, no matter who is coming to him.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: If LSU came to him, which I don't think they did, but uh who knows?
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: Penn State's pretty desperate right now.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: I'm sure they put out a feeler right now to Joey Maguire's agent.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: And guess what?
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: He doesn't want to go, he's cool with where he's at.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: He honestly is very, very cool with where he's at, and he does not want to he wants to be here, he wants to be in the state of Texas where he was born and raised.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: He has wanted this job for a long, long time.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: He he believes that this is the peak, and that's fantastic.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: If that's everybody kind of takes in different things into account when they talk about their job and their future.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: Joey McGuire is very happy with where he's at, and I I there everybody that reaches out is getting told no anyway by his agent.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: So that's what it is.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: And I mean, it that's also a testament to everything that Texas Tech is as well.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: Like obviously, we love Joey, but he it took a guy that finally realized you know what this place is and what it could be.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: And obviously, the the big deciding factor of this modern era is just the sheer amount of support that has been hamstrung over here in West Texas.
- 8:48SPEAKER_06: So it's it's just it's great to see him realize that and have this uh CEO culture type that he is, um, and to you know maintain the locker room while letting his elite coaches coach has just been a perfect recipe.
- 9:02SPEAKER_06: You know, he's he's he's a big time recruiter, able to bring in all this talent, but also maintain, uh including the transfer guys, but also maintain a very pleasant locker in that you know where you have guys that work for each other.
- 9:12SPEAKER_06: Um so next thing before we move on from Joey, uh, because you know what there's a lot to talk about here, um, is so also another another hater uh critique coming at the Red Raiders with Joey McGuire right now.
- 9:25SPEAKER_06: I know it's haters.
- 9:26SPEAKER_06: It's easy to sit on this, but dude, we're the we're the king right now, and everyone's aiming for him.
- 9:30SPEAKER_06: And so uh it's it's gonna be what it is.
- 9:32SPEAKER_06: And I want one one thing I do love, like one sentence I do love about what TechStech situation is college football hates a usurper.
- 9:40SPEAKER_06: They hate a usurper, it meaning like they hate whoever a team that doesn't normally headline, headlines over the big names.
- 9:48SPEAKER_06: They despise that.
- 9:50SPEAKER_06: So everyone's gonna be poking holes into every which way they can with Texas Tech.
- 9:53SPEAKER_06: But here's the question: so people are saying that it's not Joey Maguire that's making Texas Tech uh what we are, it's the NIL slush fund that is just poured into the program, meaning that like anyone, um a monkey with the you know, with the with a visor could do the job that Joey Maguire is essentially.
- 10:11SPEAKER_06: Uh what's your take on that?
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: Well, there are rosters currently that are currently ranked above Texas Tech and currently ranked below Texas Tech that have spent more money than Texas Tech has this current year.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: Money is a huge part of today's college football.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: Being able to pay for big-time transfers and big time recruits is a huge part of college football.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: There is no doubt about that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: There are so many different factors in building a really good team, and it's not just paying for a roster.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: Florida State paid for a roster this year.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: You know, LSU paid for a roster this year, Texas paid for a roster, probably higher than everybody else paid for a roster, and they're sitting outside of the college football playoff right now.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: Ohio State paid for a roster right now, they're doing really well with it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: It takes so much more.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: And I think people have this weird like reality to them that Texas Tech paid infinitely more than everybody else.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: We didn't.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: We don't have the highest paid roster in college football right now.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Ohio State, UT, everybody else is not everybody else, uh a decent amount of teams are outspending us still.
- 11:27SPEAKER_04: You have to do something with that talent and with those players, and you have to develop a culture and a locker room and win football games.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: You know, you have to know how to bring these guys through adversity and through tough situations.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Some coaches do a really good job of that.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: Joey Maguire has proven this year that he is a leader of men with great talent, with money.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: He is able to balance all these different factors, and he's done that this year.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: So you can say it's all money, but it's just not.
- 12:00SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, dude.
- 12:01SPEAKER_06: We uh we play, we we we play, yeah.
- 12:03SPEAKER_06: You and me.
- 12:04SPEAKER_06: We we we we're watching a sport that is decided on the field for the most part, of course.
- 12:11SPEAKER_06: And that and that's that's why we're in the situation that we're in.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't think anybody would have predicted Texas Tech to be number four in the nation right now.
- 12:19SPEAKER_06: Um, so except of course separate ball knowers like the Red Raider fan base, of course.
- 12:24SPEAKER_06: Um, we may have been off three spots, number one, maybe.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: But but but like I was saying, you know, it it can only go so far wherever you're trying to say, look, it's it's it's all it's all the numbers game with Texas Tech, you know, they were they're able to just roll that uh that cash flow and just steamroll everybody in front of them.
- 12:43SPEAKER_06: And like you noted, dude, it's we're not the only ones doing this.
- 12:46SPEAKER_06: Um, and but we're the one, the only few ones that are actually successful at doing so.
- 12:51SPEAKER_06: Um, if we decided uh the the game, the sport before uh uh that we we played a single down, then Texas Tech would not even be benefiting from this.
- 13:00SPEAKER_06: Okay, like even though we were supremely talented, we still would have been ranked what 20th if you never played a single game.
- 13:06SPEAKER_06: So it's it it's still decided on the gridiron, and Tex Tech had to go out there and earn it.
- 13:11SPEAKER_06: And a huge part of that, of course, was Joe McGuire.
- 13:13SPEAKER_06: But I mean, to not to overshadow at all, he's not those players aren't the only people that are recruited, those offensive and defensive coordinators.
- 13:21SPEAKER_06: Man, oh my god, probably the best we've ever seen, especially on the defensive side at Texas Tag.
- 13:27SPEAKER_06: Sheel Wood is a well-deserved, uh, what's it the Broyles finalists, semi-finalist?
- 13:31SPEAKER_06: So well-deserved, probably arguably the best defensive coordinator in the country, seeming as we have the best stopping rate in the entire country currently in defense.
- 13:39SPEAKER_06: So screw the money, dude.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: Like these guys earned it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, another part about Joey, now that we're, you know, just praising him uh for everything that he's doing is is the staff that he's brought in this year.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: We were talking about it, we were texting about earlier this week of you know, uh originally bringing on a guy like Josh Cochran, who has been a very undervalued, not undervalued, but uh he's not talked about a lot in in the grand scheme.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: You know, you uh first thing first thing you talk about, Joey Maguire, then you talk about Shield Wood and Mac Lepwich.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: But man, Josh Cochran's done a hell of a job.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Kenny Perry's done a hell of a job.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: All these guys, Juice Johnson's done it done a great job from uh well, we weren't he didn't really start off fantastic at Texas Tech.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: He I think he's done a pretty good job this year.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Clay Maguire, Zarnell Fish, these guys, the entire staff all together.
- 14:36SPEAKER_04: This is a it's a group effort.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Like you can have stars on your um, you know, future head coaches.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: We probably have four future head coaches on this team right now.
- 14:44SPEAKER_06: Do you know what's funny?
- 14:45SPEAKER_06: Like, we're always talking about the leech tree that's from Texas Tech.
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: I feel like we're kind of seeing the beginnings of the Maguire tree.
- 14:51SPEAKER_06: You know, like this, it's not if it's when a guy like Shieldwood gets a head coaching job.
- 14:57SPEAKER_06: That's probably his next step.
- 14:58SPEAKER_06: I hope that's his next step.
- 14:59SPEAKER_06: I hope he's not leaving us for another program.
- 15:01SPEAKER_06: I can't see that really happening.
- 15:03SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's I feel like his next step is becoming a head coach somewhere, you know, at a good G5, maybe even a P4 job.
- 15:09SPEAKER_06: So it's these guys can launch from here, and I'd love to see it.
- 15:12SPEAKER_06: That just shows you're doing something right.
- 15:14SPEAKER_06: So, dude, uh the coaching, the coaching staff, it's just it's hard to give them enough flowers this season.
- 15:20SPEAKER_06: I think the reason why is just you know, Tex Tech fans have been waiting decades for this, and it's it's finally happening.
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: Like you you wake up and you want to pinch yourself because he you see the double T with the number four next to it, highest in the lone star state.
- 15:35SPEAKER_06: Um, your your your ride your bitter rivals are from the outside looking in in the playoff picture and outside of AM.
- 15:42SPEAKER_06: And it's just it's hard to believe, dude.
- 15:47SPEAKER_06: It's just it's hard to but to breathe it all in.
- 15:50SPEAKER_06: But just what what Kirby Hokutt and the Texas Tech Athletic Department have been developing across all these sports, it's really no surprise when you sit down and look at it, which is a which is a testament to their work.
- 16:01SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I love smelling the roses as much as you do.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: We've been doing that a lot this season.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: I actually feel like we've been doing that a good amount, versus a lot of Texas Tech fans are either waiting to be disappointed or just like you know, waiting for the next thing to make them upset or whatever.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: Um, I I I this season has been unprecedented and it's been incredible so far.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: There's still a lot to go, too, which is the crazy part.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: We still have a Big 12 championship to play, a potential, you know, first ever Big 12 conference trophy coming to Lubbock, and then you know, we move on to the college football playoff, with which right now your Texas Tech Red Raiders have a first round bye in the college football playoff.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: We are the four seed in the latest college football playoff rankings, which came out about an hour and a half ago.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: Um incredible, incredible, just unbelievable.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: I don't know what to do.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: This is crazy.
- 16:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, dude, top four in the entire country, in the entire US of A when it comes to college football.
- 17:01SPEAKER_06: And the crazy thing is like four is great, don't get me wrong, but I you probably have the opportunity to move up to three.
- 17:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh, depending on how these uh uh championships go.
- 17:10SPEAKER_06: So I mean I feel like if you win this Saturday, you inevitably go up to three.
- 17:14SPEAKER_06: I've I feel I would feel like, you know?
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: Well let's let's let's talk about that because where we sit right here Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, Texas Tech, five is Oregon, six is Ole Miss, a little surprising that they kept Ole Miss there.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: AM down to seven, Oklahoma eight, Alabama moving above Notre Dame at nine, Notre Dame at 10, BYU at 11, Miami at 12, and then the rest doesn't really matter because they're not gonna make the playoff.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: So unless you're the ACC or the G5 that's gonna sneak in here.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: There's so many crazy scenarios with this college football playoff right now for this championship weekend.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: I love every second of it.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: If let's talk about what relates to Texas Tech right now.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: So if Texas Tech beats BYU, obviously there's no going down.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: You're either standing for or you're rising.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: And the only way I think you can rise necessarily is one, if Indiana or Ohio State just gets absolutely crushed.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: And even if they do, I still don't think either one of those schools drops below Texas Tech.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: I really don't.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe Indiana, like say Indiana loses by like four touchdowns to Ohio State in the championship game.
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: I could potentially see that happening to where Texas Tech jumps them, but I just don't think that's gonna happen.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: They're both really good teams.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: Or, and then if Alabama beats Georgia in the SEC championship, I think you'll see Texas Tech jump Georgia.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: So I think that's the you can really only go up if you win.
- 18:51SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 18:51SPEAKER_06: That's that's what I was getting at.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: Um I do think that there is a strong possibility that you leap uh in Indiana.
- 18:59SPEAKER_06: I think if Indiana loses, it even if they go don't get blown out, even if they don't get blown out, like even if it's like it's like a one or two possession game, um, I still feel like there's a strong potential that every uh three and four skewed up in Indiana goes down to four.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: But but you're putting you're putting a lot of emphasis on the committee for the for losing a conference championship game.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: And at least in the past, of you know, the short time frame that we've had this 12-team playoff, they have not punished a team very harshly for losing a conference championship game.
- 19:29SPEAKER_06: That's not being punished harshly.
- 19:30SPEAKER_06: You still have a buy.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: It kind of is, though.
- 19:32SPEAKER_06: It kind of is still have a buy.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: And the thing is going down three seeds, like that's just not that the only loss at that point would be to number one Ohio State.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Like better loss than tech and Georgia.
- 19:45SPEAKER_06: But let's say that you know both uh Tex Tech and Georgia win their uh respective uh championship games, then they're now you can see that as the committee rewarding them from where for winning their conference, while Indiana did not.
- 19:57SPEAKER_06: And they had the most it's not about when you it's it's not about like uh who you lose to for the most part, it's about when you lose whenever it comes to this kind of stuff.
- 20:05SPEAKER_06: Um, so because we've kind of forgotten that Georgia lost to Alabama, you know.
- 20:10SPEAKER_06: So it's I feel like they would, it's obviously this is all speculation.
- 20:14SPEAKER_06: Um, and but I do feel like tech would move up into the three slot if Indiana uh falls to uh Ohio State, just for sake of time relevance and rewarding teams that won their conferences.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: I would I would disagree.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: I think I think that Indiana and Ohio State are a guaranteed top three seed, no matter what happens on when do they play, Saturday or Sunday, whatever.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: Either way, I I think Texas Tech remains at four, and potential if Georgia loses to Alabama, you can get up to three.
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: I don't think you're getting up to two unless Indiana just absolutely gets their butt kicked by Ohio State, which I don't think will happen.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: Because I I think that Big Ten championships in Indianapolis.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: So there's gonna be a good uh a good Hoosier crowd there, and they've obviously had a killer season.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: They're a great team, so yeah, absolutely.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: Um I don't see that happening.
- 21:03SPEAKER_06: But I mean, obviously, if if uh Alabama tops Georgia, I think that's where it gets kind of weird because obviously tech would move into three or two, depending on how the Big Ten championship game goes.
- 21:12SPEAKER_06: Um, who would move into that four spot?
- 21:15SPEAKER_06: You think they'd gift it to Bama?
- 21:17SPEAKER_06: Oregon.
- 21:18SPEAKER_06: You think you think they just bump Oregon up for simply for simply being idle?
- 21:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that shows how silly.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: You can't you you can't you can't not move Georgia out of there, and you also can't move Alabama in there.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Alabama's too far down, they're nine right now.
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: Like there's no there's no way that the committee can justify moving, and no matter even if you won the SEC, yeah, you cannot move up that many spaces at this point in the year with so many teams sitting idle and so many other teams competing for for their conference championship.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: So I do think Alabama does get a first round bye if they win.
- 21:54SPEAKER_04: I think they move up to probably a five or a six, you know, and then Georgia moves down, tech moves.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Up and then naturally, with that progression of the teams that aren't playing in the conference championship, we'll just move a space up.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: Do you think so?
- 22:08SPEAKER_06: If Georgia loses to Bama, do you think they're out of the bye weeks?
- 22:12SPEAKER_06: You think the Oregon just decides in?
- 22:14SPEAKER_06: You think they just they just think it's moves down one?
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: No, yeah.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: I think I think Georgia is out of a bye week, out of out of the first round bye.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: They're gonna be five to eight range if they lose to Alabama.
- 22:25SPEAKER_04: I don't think they draw below that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: And then Alabama would move in the five day range, and then they know move everybody down a little bit.
- 22:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh but uh all in all though, I mean, do you want at whenever you look now?
- 22:38SPEAKER_06: You probably do want to move into that three spot though.
- 22:41SPEAKER_06: If things freeze as they are, you probably do want to play the winner of Ole Miss uh ACC champion likely or uh G5 team uh versus Oregon, North Texas.
- 22:53SPEAKER_06: I'm sure I'm sure Oregon will win that game.
- 22:55SPEAKER_06: What would you rather see Tech end up with in that scenario?
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: Um I I really whether it's three, whether it's four, whether it's two, I I want because the quarterfinals, the bowl games that you have to choose from are the cotton bowl, the orange bowl, the sugar bowl, and the rose bowl.
- 23:12SPEAKER_06: Give me that cotton bowl.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: If you can be at the cotton bowl for your quarterfinal matchup in the college football playoff, I don't care who you're playing.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I agree.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: That having that in your backyard of your biggest alumni base is where you need to be.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: And I wouldn't even be mad at a sugar bowl.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: That's not a far drive for a lot of people, especially you know, people that make the drive up to Lubbock, Texas fairly often.
- 23:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so Houston fans would be pretty pumped, probably.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, going over to New Orleans, that's not bad.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I don't know how that works.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it's like the top four seeds, like one gets their first choice of bowl game, two gets the next choice, three gets the next.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: So I guess from that perspective, if it works like that, I would rather you know move up to a three and two seed so we can guarantee, you know, because Ohio State's not choosing the cotton bowl.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: I don't think.
- 24:00SPEAKER_06: Ah, what what are the other options?
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: Rose Bowl, sugar bowl, orange bowl.
- 24:06SPEAKER_04: So I don't know what they choose.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: I don't know, dude.
- 24:09SPEAKER_06: I feel like Ohio State would be pretty timid about the Cotton Bowl.
- 24:12SPEAKER_06: They have a pretty good following in Dallas, and I don't know.
- 24:15SPEAKER_06: I everyone wants to be in Dallas.
- 24:17SPEAKER_04: But again, I don't know if the committee chooses.
- 24:19SPEAKER_04: I don't know if they're just like by geo by geographical location, that's you know, your top four goes, but um, either way, you you definitely want the cotton bowl 1A or one for sure, and then two is a uh two is the sugar bowl, probably, and then you know you just kind of go wherever you're that is a home game for you if we get the cotton bowl.
- 24:38SPEAKER_06: That would be such a blessing, dude.
- 24:40SPEAKER_06: That'd be such a blessing.
- 24:42SPEAKER_06: Um sorry, go.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: No, how do you how do you feel about BYU?
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: Because they are they unless they win the Big 12 championship, they are out, and that is what the committee has has told us with this latest ranking.
- 24:54SPEAKER_06: So Brett Brett Yormark wants BYU to win.
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: Oh uh, yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: If you're if you're outside, if you're uh rooting for the Big 12, you want BYU to win, you know, not even like unless you're a Texas Tech fan, you want BYU to win.
- 25:08SPEAKER_06: I guess there's kind of I guess there's kind of two ways to look at that as a Big 12 fan, though.
- 25:12SPEAKER_06: Like you you do get a little you get more Big 12 respect, I think, I think, by keeping a team in the in the by slot than just having some guys out there in the wild and the at larges.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: I don't know, man.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: You you want being a one-bid league is not a great look.
- 25:30SPEAKER_06: I know that's and you know what's funny about that is if if old miss was anything but an SEC team, how badly do you think they'd be being punished right now by Lane leaving?
- 25:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, probably pretty bad.
- 25:43SPEAKER_04: I was surprised, and I think the the offensive coordinator coaching through the rest of the season and them announcing that earlier today did sway the decision.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: That was I think if yeah, I mean I think if the if the it was just the defensive coordinator and then a bunch of Joe Schmoes that didn't leave for LSU with lane, I think they would have been uh a little harsher on Ole Miss, probably dropping them below AM and probably Oklahoma too, um, with potential to even drop further.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: So I I think with that announcement and that the fact they're gonna have both their coordinators for this, um, this run, this playoff run, or whatever, and that and that team deserves it.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, the the team has been good all year, they have some quality wins.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't know if I would have necessarily dropped or put them above AM.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: Maybe I would have.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: I think they I mean they have a better record, I think.
- 26:35SPEAKER_04: Like, I mean, uh like the same record, but they have the sketch.
- 26:38SPEAKER_04: They have a better loss.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Ole Miss has a better loss than AM does.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: So I think that's ultimately what made the decision.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I mean, it would have been it would have been a crapshoot if Ole Miss got screwed here by their coach leaving.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: Like, I I would have hated that for them, and that wouldn't have been fair.
- 26:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I I agree.
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: I agree.
- 26:55SPEAKER_06: Obviously, the real bill in all this is Notre Dame.
- 26:58SPEAKER_06: Like, truly.
- 26:59SPEAKER_06: Like everyone hates Notre Dame right now for you know the way they were able to more or less kind of just skirt their way into the playoff, dude.
- 27:08SPEAKER_06: Well, I think their one good one is USC, and that's just and that's not even a great win.
- 27:12SPEAKER_06: And that that's that's dude.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: They beat they beat Navy, they beat Navy.
- 27:17SPEAKER_06: That's true.
- 27:17SPEAKER_06: They and they beat Arch rival Stanford.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: I think, yeah, Stanford, they played Boston College.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: That was a tough one.
- 27:24SPEAKER_06: That was that was a big game, and Syracuse.
- 27:28SPEAKER_06: Sterakuse, yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: Syracuse is you better watch out for the orange.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: I said, and I almost tweeted this, and I got a little scared because I didn't want to get a bunch of replies.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: I said, if the college football playoff rankings made sense, if they're benefiting, like if they're giving credit to making your conference championship game, if they are actually taking that into account and putting a really big emphasis into that, the ranking should have gone Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, Texas Tech, Oregon, Ole Miss, BYU at seven, Alabama at eight, AM at nine, Oklahoma at 10, Notre Dame 11, Miami 12.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: That's what it should have been.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: If you're actually taking into account making your conference championship game, and and I I because I think that's a really big deal.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: That is undervalued.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: Actually making a spot, and yes, I know these conferences are huge.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: I know there's not a lot of head-to-heads in these situations that you can compare, but it should mean something to make your conference championship game.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: And BYU sitting at 11 here after making their conference championship game at 11 and 1.
- 28:39SPEAKER_06: Who's their loss to?
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: I have a top four team in the country right now.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Just me?
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: Just me?
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: Because right now, Notre Dame has two losses, Miami has two losses.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Well, they're BYU is about Miami.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: Alabama has two losses.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: I'm just like, uh it blows my mind.
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: I I I really feel for the Cougar fans, and I think that the playoff committee is really lucky that the team that the fan base they're upsetting is as nice as BYU is, so they're not gonna say too many bad words about the the playoff committee, but they're getting robbed, dude.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: 11-1 in a power four conference, and you're on the outside looking in, you're about to play for that trophy for that conference, and the only team you lost to is the scary top four uh presumed champion of said league, number four.
- 29:32SPEAKER_06: Uh like that is just that's asinine.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: And how in the world is Oklahoma about BYU?
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: I know how in the world helmet.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: It's the helmet.
- 29:42SPEAKER_04: How that is it blows my mind.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: A two-loss team in Oklahoma, who granted has some good wins on their resume, and probably better, you know, quality wins than BYU does, whatever.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: How in the world is that resume better?
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: How in the world is Notre Dame above BYU?
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: Their quality wins don't even match up.
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's not even fair.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: I know their losses are good.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: They lost to Miami, they lost to AM, but I and and but you look at BYU, they lost to freaking number four Texas Tech.
- 30:14SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't blow my mind.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Is this the most frustrating thing about the consolidation of the sport going into these huge leagues, you think?
- 30:22SPEAKER_06: Like, because this would not be this would not be a problem if we were in 10 to 12 uh 10 to 12 team leagues right now.
- 30:29SPEAKER_06: Like, none of this would be an issue.
- 30:31SPEAKER_06: BYU would absolutely be in the playoff if the if they were in a 10 or 12 team league.
- 30:37SPEAKER_06: Because, you know, like you like you brought up, the only reason why it's a problem that you know, like AM, uh, Olmus, and Oklahoma are in the the playoff is they're idle.
- 30:49SPEAKER_06: They are idle teams, they're not even playing this weekend, and they're safe while the teams that are playing in their conference championships are on the outside looking in.
- 30:57SPEAKER_06: Like that doesn't add up, like you were saying.
- 30:59SPEAKER_06: Like, does not that does not compute.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: I I have an old tweet from July 21st of 2021, and I said, Okay, new plan.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: The Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and ACC all dissolve, and every team joins the SEC.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: The SEC is renamed the College Football Conference, and then they split that into five subconferences and call those subconferences the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12, the ACC, and the SEC.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: This is a great idea.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: 10 to 12 teams in the league.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, you have balance between, you know, you kind of make these leagues based on geographical locations.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: It's all like it's uh yeah, you know, hundred-year-long rivalries don't get destroyed.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: It's it's honestly it's a great idea.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: It's a great idea.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 31:48SPEAKER_06: I mean, we we can obviously this is very much off season talk, um, to be honest.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: But but it would solve a lot of these stupid college football playoff discourse questions.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: It really would.
- 31:59SPEAKER_06: I am 1000% for the NFL location of the sport when it comes to this.
- 32:05SPEAKER_06: Like, I really think that the sport needs to consolidate into one mass and bargain itself collectively and break down into divisions of six or eight teams, seriously, and then just have tons of room for cross-divisional play.
- 32:18SPEAKER_06: Um, I I think that's the I think that's the the clear-cut fix, but obviously it's the the sport isn't looking to be fixed, it's looking for the fattest teams to get fatter.
- 32:27SPEAKER_06: That's all it is.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: Dude, you you can't look at Texas AM and see that all the other competitors of the SEC, Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia, Vanderbilt, even, Ole Miss, they played none of them.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: They played none of them.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: So, how can you actually compare these resumes?
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: You can't just say, Oh, they played an SEC schedule.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: AM's SEC schedule was dog shit.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: It was, and and I'll I'll give Texas credit, their schedule was difficult, you know.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: Alabama's schedule was pretty difficult, but then you get an AM that's like you didn't play anybody, dude.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: You played Texas, the one decent team on your on your conference schedule, and you lost.
- 33:10SPEAKER_04: So you can't reasonably compare all these teams.
- 33:13SPEAKER_06: Wasn't UT the only uh team with a winning record in conference that they played?
- 33:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, like above 500.
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: And for some reason, we keep counting these Tennessee victories and these uh these Mississippi State and these uh you know Missouri victories as like quality wins.
- 33:32SPEAKER_04: Stop it.
- 33:33SPEAKER_06: That's that's what's been kind of funny.
- 33:35SPEAKER_06: Like Tennessee is the good team to beat right now.
- 33:37SPEAKER_06: Like, they're not they're not the they're not a good team, they're just good to beat.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: Tennessee beat nobody, they beat nobody this year and they're ranked like all year.
- 33:46SPEAKER_06: I feel like they're just ranked.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: They were ranked for everybody else all year long.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: Tennessee crazy unbelievable.
- 33:54SPEAKER_06: But it just it just shows them the moral the the idi idiocy of the sport right now, man.
- 33:59SPEAKER_06: And just it it sucks how it's a sport that was made for local communities to gather and watch their favorite teams play football together, has turned into clear, just naked TV product.
- 34:13SPEAKER_06: That's all it is now.
- 34:14SPEAKER_06: Like that's and that's the only reason why they're in the super conferences is to present the best product to networks, and just sucks, dude.
- 34:22SPEAKER_06: And now we have an ugly playoff for it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: It sucks to bring this to bring this back to something I said earlier, and to just throw, you know, I'm just shouting into the wind at this point.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: There's so many selfish people that are leading this sport, yes, there really is.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: And I just I can't get over that piece of it.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: The fact that we aren't chastising Lane Kiffen for leaving a playoff team to go coach another team in the same conference that did so much worse than your team did this year, that you play, and and I think old miss and Ellis, you are like one of the one of the rivals that are actually going to stay together as part of this new SEC conference thing.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: The fact that the Kirk Herbstreets of the world and the Nick Sabins of the world and the big media heads now are not absolutely chastising this decision is what's wrong with the sport.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: You're just giving these guys, and everybody's about me, me, me.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: And I get it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, when you talk about the like conference commissioners and everything, and you're like, well, Greg Sankey just has to care about the SEC.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Well, Brett Yormark just has to care about the success of the Big 12.
- 35:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, technically, but that's also part of the reason why this sport has gone so downhill and why it's so much worse than it was, because everybody is being so damn selfish about all these decisions.
- 35:40SPEAKER_04: Nobody is is coming together, nobody's trying to come to a good conclusion for what works for everybody.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: It's just all about me, me, me, and it sucks.
- 35:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, that's that is the inevitable uh outcome of all this is greed, unfortunately, put us in the position we're in.
- 35:54SPEAKER_06: And I mean, we don't want to be uh doom and glue, man.
- 35:57SPEAKER_06: We were just talking about how positive we are about the whole season on this program.
- 36:00SPEAKER_06: Um, and we are really positive.
- 36:03SPEAKER_06: The thing is, TechStech is still in a really good spot.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: Like the Big 12 is pretty healthy, all things considered.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: So, like there's not much to complain about in that department besides missing our traditional rivals, is all.
- 36:13SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's back back to it, you know.
- 36:16SPEAKER_06: I let's let's stick back to to Texas Tech BYU since that's really the main topic here.
- 36:20SPEAKER_06: We gotta whale off the reservation there, y'all.
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry, this turned into a bit of a rant episode, I guess, even though we're talking about Texas Tech in the playoff.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: I'm taking I've taken in so much college football media over the last couple days that I just I'm sick of it.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: I'm just sick of barping it out once in a while.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: I'm sick of just everybody being like, yeah, this is okay.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's all good.
- 36:41SPEAKER_06: It's it's all good, it's all good.
- 36:43SPEAKER_06: Um, but but yeah, dude, uh again, I think it's a damn shame that BYU is being left out.
- 36:48SPEAKER_06: I just and I'm I'll I was listening to uh uh Adam Gibby of the uh first and 16 uh podcast, uh a great, a great General Big 12 podcast, y'all.
- 36:58SPEAKER_06: If you haven't checked them out yet, um he was saying that he's a BYU fan at heart.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: Um, but he was saying that the strangest thing, the most frustrating thing about the BYU situation, it's not necessarily that they're on the outside looking in, obviously that is, but it's how no one will acknowledge it.
- 37:12SPEAKER_06: Like no one is talking about how BYU is on the outside looking in.
- 37:16SPEAKER_06: Because in his theory, I think is on point.
- 37:18SPEAKER_06: I'll all credit to him.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: I'm I'm I'm gonna give I'm citing I'm I'm citing him right now, is he thinks it's because they had have no way to defend it.
- 37:27SPEAKER_06: Like if College Game Day had to sit there and talk about it, like honestly, would they be able to?
- 37:32SPEAKER_06: And I think he has a good point because if they ran down the wins, where do you poke holes in BYU's problem here?
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: They did what they were supposed to, they only tripped up at the best team in their conference uh home field, and they're on that team is on fire.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: Best defense in the country.
- 37:50SPEAKER_06: So it's just I I I I really feel for the Cougar fans.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: Um, but I do unfortunately think they're gonna be left out because we're gonna win.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, that's you know, like we said earlier, if you're if you're rooting for the Big 12, you're probably rooting for BYU, and then uh, and then there's us Texas Tech fans.
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: And clearly, if you've watched these two teams play this year, you know, Texas Tech has shown more on the field than BYU has.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: And and we saw the head-to-head matchup, we absolutely cooked them in Lubbock, and it wasn't the score was closer than what actually that was, because we kicked five field goals and left a lot of points on the board in the red zone there.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I mean, uh if you're looking at these two teams, Texas Tech is clearly superior in talent and on the field production this season.
- 38:38SPEAKER_04: Um we're both gonna be there.
- 38:40SPEAKER_04: We got tickets.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: We're there.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: Jerry World, 11 a.m.
- 38:44SPEAKER_04: Saturday.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm hyped up, dude.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: I I know a lot of Texas Tech fans have spent a lot of money to be there for this game, and the ticket prices have absolutely boomed in the past few weeks, uh, knowing that Texas Tech is gonna be there.
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: But great home field advantage being in Arlington.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the DFW area is a hub for Texas Tech alum.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: BYU brings in a national fan base, though.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: There's gonna be a lot of blue there, but man, I cannot tell you how hyped up the Texas Tech fans are gonna be to be at this game, and more so than these other schools that are currently fighting for a conference championship right now.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: Alabama's done it, Georgia's done it, you know, Ohio State's done it, Indiana fans are probably pretty hyped up right now to be a part of this conversation.
- 39:30SPEAKER_04: But Texas Tech fans are so freaking hungry, not just for college football playoff seating, not just for a first-round bye or a home game, but for an actual conference championship.
- 39:41SPEAKER_04: So this is you're gonna have the home field advantage, you're gonna have you have the on-field advantage, you have the coaching advantage.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: You uh Texas Tech just has a lot going for them right now.
- 39:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, dude, I I couldn't said it better myself.
- 39:55SPEAKER_06: Uh, I that that stadium is gonna be packed.
- 39:57SPEAKER_06: This is a best case scenario for the Big 12 when it comes to which fan base are coming to the uh to the to the Jerry world.
- 40:02SPEAKER_06: Um uh and I honestly I think this would be a preview of what's to come for the Big 12.
- 40:07SPEAKER_06: You know, a lot of people are always talking about like, hey, what's the who's gonna be dominating the the Big 12 in the future?
- 40:13SPEAKER_06: And some of the initial answers were TCU, Oklahoma State, Kansas State.
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: Um, and funny enough, all of them have nosedived at this point.
- 40:20SPEAKER_06: Um, and now Tex Tech and BYU have really positioned themselves to be uh consistent, to really stick around at the top of the Big 12 moving forward.
- 40:29SPEAKER_06: Um, like I said, I think this would be a good broad, uh, a good indicator of things to come in the future, especially with all these numbers that you're seeing coming out of both TechStech and BYU with NIL.
- 40:38SPEAKER_06: And now it's been announced that both coaches, uh both uh universities are gonna retain their coaches, which I think is great news for BYU.
- 40:44SPEAKER_06: Like I was so happy to see that they were able to fend off Penn State.
- 40:48SPEAKER_06: That shows great health of the Big 12 and shows great uh belief from their coach in his school that you like to see retained inside this conference.
- 40:56SPEAKER_06: Um the fact here you're saying, dude, a Big 12 championship means so much to Texas Tech fans.
- 41:01SPEAKER_06: Uh to be on the drought that we are for uh since the 90s, and even then, that was a shared conference championship.
- 41:08SPEAKER_06: I guess it's been so long since we've gone out there and earned a solo conference championship.
- 41:13SPEAKER_06: It's been most tech, it's not even in most tech uh tech fans' lifetimes.
- 41:18SPEAKER_06: So that shows the the amount of time that has passed since we've really gone out there and gotten the trophy.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: So, like you said, dude, I think the only people that would matter is uh just as much to is like Indiana fans out up there in the Big Ten if they can go and get one.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: Um, and it's it's really just us at this point that are gonna just be relishing it in that, and we earned it.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Well, and I think it's the mentality of the team, too.
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: That's the difference.
- 41:40SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, you go play at Ohio State, you go play at Alabama, you're focused on a national championship, and that's what everybody talks about from day one.
- 41:47SPEAKER_04: Joey McGuire and his guys in the press conferences, I don't even think it mentioned college football playoff stuff.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: Like they're focused 100% on this Big 12 championship.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: That was that's the goal.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: And if you talk to a lot of Texas Tech fans, the goal is to win the Big 12 championship, and then everything after that is kind of you know just extra.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think this team is good enough to do a whole lot of extra beyond that, but this is the focus, and that's why these guys are going to be so locked in for this game, and they're not just overlooking this one to get to the playoff, they're also they're realizing, hey, even if you are overlooking it a little bit, you need to win this game to get a first round bye to get even a potential home game.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: Like I can see if Texas Tech loses against BYU, yeah, I think they'll they're pretty firmly in the playoff, but I don't even think you're playing in Lubbock.
- 42:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you're probably traveling.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: You're probably traveling somewhere, and so that should be a big deal to people that are even overlooking a conference championship game, which I don't think they are.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: I think the mentality with this team is so locked in on being one and oh, yeah, focusing on that very next game, that I I just don't have a lot of faith that, or I do have a lot of faith that uh this team is just locked in on the next game.
- 43:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh I you took the words right out of my mouth.
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: It's it's been a one and oh mentality.
- 43:07SPEAKER_06: And all season long, especially when things started really going, I've been telling everybody that talks to me, everyone wants to talk about tech with me, of course.
- 43:13SPEAKER_06: Um, whenever I'm reporting that double T and all that at work, and um that I just always tell everybody, it's like, look, if I I I just want a Big 12 trophy.
- 43:24SPEAKER_06: And if we get that, everything after that is just a cherry on top in my in my in my uh head.
- 43:31SPEAKER_06: And honestly, that's still how I feel.
- 43:33SPEAKER_06: I want that Big 12 trophy so dang bad.
- 43:35SPEAKER_06: Um, and just just to break the drought, just to finally solidify yourself as a real contender in this sport, in this conference, just would be beautiful, just to show that you know you're you you you got it, dude.
- 43:49SPEAKER_06: And um, but yeah, I like like you said, dude, you need to go out and take care of business if you wanted to, if you wanted to have a good outlook in the playoff, because I really don't want to travel.
- 43:57SPEAKER_06: Um, and having that by bye week would just Be such a stamp on a great season.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: And like you said, if we're in the cotton bowl, dude, like you can we we can be seriously talking about real confidence going to the semifinals.
- 44:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: A little bit about the game itself.
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: So in Lubbock, LJ Martin, their star running back at BYU, did not have a good game.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: You'll notice that's a trend with BYU when they they played a tight one against a bad Colorado team and then they lost Texas Tech.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: Those were LJ Martin's worst rushing performances of the entire season, minus the Iowa State game where he actually got hurt and only ran the ball five times.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: So that's the key.
- 44:40SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously Texas Tech has done a great job of stopping the run.
- 44:44SPEAKER_04: And if they stop LJ Martin, I I I don't have a lot of faith in Bear Bachmeyer to actually get this done.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: I love Bear Bachmeyer.
- 44:52SPEAKER_04: I love what he can do in the future.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: I love the potential of him at BYU.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: But right now, I just don't see it happening for him unless he gets that help from LJ Morton.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: And uh with Texas Tech's defensive line, obviously, it's uh it's just not looking good for opposing team running backs right now.
- 45:08SPEAKER_04: And uh and that's gonna be the difference.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: You're gonna have to have Bear Bachmeyer beat you, and I don't think he's capable of doing that.
- 45:15SPEAKER_06: That's yeah, that's a great point.
- 45:16SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, oftentimes it's said a lot in the sport, and it's absolutely true that it's it's really hard to beat the same team twice um for some reason.
- 45:24SPEAKER_06: You know, I guess just both sides really one the losing side really figures it out from the from the film room um and maybe has a little more fight coming into the game.
- 45:32SPEAKER_06: But Steven, like you said, that BYU game in the Lubbock was not a reflection of how it actually went, like the score.
- 45:40SPEAKER_06: I mean, we left so many points off the board, it should have looked like any of our other blowouts ultimately.
- 45:46SPEAKER_06: Um, and dude, I really like the BYU Cougs, and I think they should be in the playoffs, but I think we're just gonna see a replication of more of the same.
- 45:56SPEAKER_06: I think I think it's gonna be a splattering in Dallas.
- 45:58SPEAKER_06: I think that uh our boys are gonna come out very fired up, and I'm sure BYU will come out kind of scared, remembering what they met in Lubbock.
- 46:07SPEAKER_06: You know, that D-line is no joke, and we ate them alive.
- 46:10SPEAKER_06: And it's I think it's just it's gonna be more of the same, dude.
- 46:13SPEAKER_06: And I say that with a lot of confidence.
- 46:16SPEAKER_06: I'm very confident we win this football game, dude.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: Also, want to bring up Morgantown, West Virginia, Baron Morton, 25 of 32, 310 yards, three touchdowns in three quarters?
- 46:30SPEAKER_04: Two and a half.
- 46:31SPEAKER_06: Uh, really, yeah, I was gonna say really two, maybe at two.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: He played past halftime, it was like two and a half quarters.
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: Um, he's starting to get things rolling.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's really and now he's got what three straight games under his belt.
- 46:43SPEAKER_04: Again, if he stays healthy, he he's got that thing rolling, man.
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: Like this offense is humming when Barron Morton is there.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: And uh again, he stays healthy, you're you're gonna be fine.
- 46:57SPEAKER_06: Steven, we didn't even talk about the West Virginia game.
- 46:59SPEAKER_06: We just freeze right on past it.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: Um 49 to nothing.
- 47:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we've won 49 to nothing, but that was quietly an awesome game from uh from Barron.
- 47:09SPEAKER_06: Like he looked phenomenal out there, man.
- 47:12SPEAKER_06: Just he'd like a smooth operator.
- 47:15SPEAKER_06: He he went in there and got the work done.
- 47:16SPEAKER_06: I just want to make sure that we we mentioned that.
- 47:18SPEAKER_06: And we broke the uh all-time series.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: We are now leading that series against the Mountaineers.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: Um, and it's uh it it was a good time giving them their worst loss since what 1891 or whatever that crazy was.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: It was their first time, I think, with a home shutout since like 2003 or something like that.
- 47:38SPEAKER_04: Um brutal.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: I can't I went into that game with so much, like uh I was scared for some stupid reason.
- 47:46SPEAKER_04: I was crazy, and I'm like, I and you know, I don't call it whatever, call it like because I've been hurt so much in the past or whatever it is by Texas Tech that um I and especially because Arizona State helped us out, but also could have taken away a lot of motivation from us with that Friday night L.
- 48:04SPEAKER_04: And so we were guaranteed already going into the game a spot in the Big 12 championship, but I I should have known better about this team and the motivation that Joey Maguire brings to him of just relentless.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: We we faked a punt up 42-0.
- 48:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, come on, like this is like Joey Maguire is gonna show no mercy this year, and he's ready to win, and he does not care about all the outside noise going on right now.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, it's pretty brutal if you're if you're a Mountaineer fan.
- 48:29SPEAKER_06: That was a brutal game.
- 48:31SPEAKER_06: He's he's playing to win, dude.
- 48:32SPEAKER_06: It's uh, and that's that's why I have zero zero uh anxiety about Saturday.
- 48:39SPEAKER_06: I think we're gonna be rolling into uh Arlington feeling dang good and feel relieving, feeling even better.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: Yep, yep.
- 48:45SPEAKER_04: You hope the O-line continues to hold up.
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be interesting seeing Texas Tech continue to play great defenses because it's only great defenses from here on out.
- 48:53SPEAKER_04: I'm just you're not gonna play a team that's got a that's got a bad defense.
- 48:57SPEAKER_04: Uh whether you get matched up with an OU or an Alabama or whoever, you know, this they all have solid to great defenses.
- 49:06SPEAKER_04: So uh it'll be interesting to see how the offense performs.
- 49:09SPEAKER_04: But another thing about this BYU game, Chase Roberts, one of their best receivers, didn't play last week against UCF.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: He may be out again for the Texas Tech game.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: That's something to note.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: And then David Bailey, who sat out the majority of the West Virginia game, really more of a precautionary thing that he sat out the rest of that game.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: He is expected to play against uh BYU in this championship game, along with everybody else that was uh a little dinged up or questionable uh going into West Virginia and after that one.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: So uh you should have uh pretty much your full team, minus you know, the the main ones like Skylar Gilhoward and those guys.
- 49:44SPEAKER_06: I I wonder how Mitch Gripp is doing.
- 49:46SPEAKER_06: He let the game.
- 49:48SPEAKER_04: Well, Joey, I mean Joey said he was okay.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: Um, I think in practice, I don't know who tweeted it out, some of the Lubbock local media, that Lloyd Jones, who actually showed some stuff in that West Virginia game, was taking second team reps.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: So maybe Mitch is not feeling great, but I mean Lloyd looked pretty good.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: I tell you what.
- 50:09SPEAKER_06: Micah Hudson tutties, dude.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: Two of them.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: Micah Hudson, he's back.
- 50:13SPEAKER_06: Dude, those were some great catches, too.
- 50:15SPEAKER_06: They really were.
- 50:16SPEAKER_06: Credit to him, man.
- 50:17SPEAKER_06: They were.
- 50:18SPEAKER_06: He's really earning his spots back, which is great.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: It was good to see Micah get those because I know he's been uh behind on a lot of reps this year, hasn't and he decided to come back after that whole debacle last year.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: And it was good to see him get a couple touchdowns and uh hopefully see a lot more in the future.
- 50:33SPEAKER_04: But yeah, it was good to see.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: It was good to see Lloyd Jones come in there, true freshman.
- 50:37SPEAKER_04: You know, pop in first pass ever was a touchdown.
- 50:40SPEAKER_04: Um of things to come, but yeah, we shall see.
- 50:47SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, dude.
- 50:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, any final thoughts on the Big 12 championship game that your big red your Texas Tech Red Raiders are gonna play in?
- 50:54SPEAKER_04: I'm just so happy that we're gonna be there.
- 50:57SPEAKER_04: I'm so happy that we're gonna witness this.
- 50:59SPEAKER_04: Yes, it is obviously not a done deal.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: BYU's fighting for a lot of stuff, they're gonna be motivated.
- 51:04SPEAKER_04: Like they're obviously they're fighting for a college football spot.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: And a Big 12 trophy.
- 51:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and and they have a little rejuvenation from Kalani Sataki signing an extension with the team, and after you know, rumors of him potentially being uh poached away by Penn State.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: So uh it's definitely not something you could take lightly.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: I would not be surprised if this is a close game, but I do think Texas Tech's gonna take care of business and probably ultimately end up winning by somewhere in the range of 14 to 17 points.
- 51:31SPEAKER_06: Me too, dude.
- 51:32SPEAKER_06: And I'm honestly I'm really excited that it's BYU.
- 51:34SPEAKER_06: I really like BYU.
- 51:35SPEAKER_06: Texas Tristan McGonagall has been on the BYU to the Big 12 train a very long time.
- 51:39SPEAKER_06: So there's something kind of tough game for you.
- 51:42SPEAKER_06: This is kind of prophetic, you know.
- 51:44SPEAKER_04: As a diehard BYU fan, this has to be tough for you.
- 51:47SPEAKER_06: This is like prophecy.
- 51:48SPEAKER_06: You know, I've been begging for this for over 15 years, and it's it's finally happening.
- 51:54SPEAKER_06: Um, and honestly, there is another reason why I get really excited about it.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be a packed house.
- 51:58SPEAKER_06: Like that's gonna be a sold-out game in Arlington.
- 52:00SPEAKER_06: That's gonna be such a good look for the Big 12.
- 52:02SPEAKER_06: Like that there are passionate fan bases that live there.
- 52:04SPEAKER_06: Granted, it's probably your two most passionate fan bases in the entire conference, like going up against each other.
- 52:10SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's gonna be such a fun time, dude.
- 52:12SPEAKER_06: And it's it's regardless of how it goes, I know we're gonna win, but just to to witness history for Tex Tech playing for its first Big 12 championship and hopefully lift up the trophy for the first time.
- 52:24SPEAKER_06: It's one of those moments that you in your life that you just you can't replicate.
- 52:27SPEAKER_06: It is, you know, it's just it's gonna be awesome.
- 52:30SPEAKER_04: I'll end with this BYU.
- 52:32SPEAKER_04: I respect you.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: I love you.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: I'm glad you're in the conference.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, I know that it would be better for the Big 12 overall if you guys won and we get two Big 12 teams in this conference or in this college football playoff, but I deeply hope we beat your ass.
- 52:48SPEAKER_06: All right, Bob Knight.
- 52:53SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 52:54SPEAKER_04: That is going to do it.
- 52:56SPEAKER_04: We'll make it a short and sweet one for all of you that are making the drive up to Arlington or maybe you know just commuting your 30 minutes or whatever it takes if you live in the DFW area.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: Um, Tristan, let's finish her off here with a song of the week.
- 53:13SPEAKER_06: Steven, I'm gonna go with a Texas guy.
- 53:15SPEAKER_06: You know, very few teams are gonna be on the road this weekend in the entire country.
- 53:23SPEAKER_06: Most teams are gonna be on their couch, some teams are done playing football totally for the year.
- 53:28SPEAKER_06: Six of them in our conference.
- 53:30SPEAKER_06: Congratulations to the 10 that are continuing to play.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: Um I'm gonna go with our home grown, one of our homegrown heroes, and one of the most famous country songs of all time on the road again by Willie Nelson.
- 53:45SPEAKER_06: Because for the first time in Texas tech history, you are on the road again for one for in in what what's this week 14?
- 53:54SPEAKER_06: 15 for the first time in a Big 12 history, and you're off to our Dallas, Texas, dude.
- 54:00SPEAKER_06: On the road again, Willie Nelson.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: On the road again, like a back to get as we go down the highway.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: We're the best of friends, and the best thing that the world can turn out our way.
- 54:16SPEAKER_04: An anthem, an old timer, great choice.
- 54:21SPEAKER_04: My song of the week is a repeat, and it's a we're allowed to do those?
- 54:25SPEAKER_04: We're allowed to repeat because you did it the first time.
- 54:30SPEAKER_04: And oh yeah, I was listening to a lot of Turnpike this past weekend.
- 54:35SPEAKER_04: Great.
- 54:35SPEAKER_04: This is good.
- 54:36SPEAKER_04: I was good.
- 54:36SPEAKER_04: It was just it was like it was just perfect.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: It was a turnpike kind of day.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: And I was reading through the lyrics of this one because it's just a really good song.
- 54:47SPEAKER_04: And it's uh honestly a little underrated of a song from them.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: My song of the week is Brought Me by Turnpike Troubadours.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: The lyrics I want to read to you right now kind of you know, really put this all into perspective for us.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Standing at the ready with a dance or two still left in me.
- 55:09SPEAKER_04: Wager that it won't appear that I forgot who brought me.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: Joey Maguire brought us here.
- 55:16SPEAKER_04: Okay, he's the woman in this song.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: He's the dance of the dance.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: He we do still have a dance or two left in us at Texas Tech.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: Brought me Turnpike Troop Dwarfs.
- 55:45SPEAKER_06: Phenomenal pick, my friends.
- 55:47SPEAKER_06: I love that song.
- 55:48SPEAKER_06: I think it's the best one on that album.
- 55:50SPEAKER_06: Uh, and that's a great that's a great way to spin it, dude.
- 55:52SPEAKER_06: I feel like I'm glad we got a theme.
- 55:54SPEAKER_06: We're all about you know movement here, you know, verbs.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: We're going forward.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: Forward, forward.
- 56:02SPEAKER_06: We're in in in Lubbock, since you're going east.
- 56:06SPEAKER_06: Yes, for us, we're going north.
- 56:08SPEAKER_04: Yes, and for some cardinal directions.
- 56:11SPEAKER_04: Some people are going south.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 56:13SPEAKER_06: Some maybe be going west.
- 56:15SPEAKER_06: Wow, crazy.
- 56:17SPEAKER_06: Don't don't don't even get me sorry if you're going in between those.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: Then we're just talking about Central Florida and all these other directional schools that don't matter.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: Um, all right.
- 56:28SPEAKER_04: Thank you all for listening.
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: We will all be either tuned in or in Arlington, Texas to watch it live.
- 56:34SPEAKER_04: But regardless, whatever you're doing, we appreciate all you guys listening.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 56:39SPEAKER_04: Tristan's at Tristan Mick.

- 56:56SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: This is wild.
- 57:09SPEAKER_02: When I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast, and these guys have been tremendous.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.

- 57:24SPEAKER_03: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
