- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: But we're in the hell, have you been?
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't, I haven't done a show since June 8th.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: I never count.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: This time I went back and counted six weeks.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I never know what number show it is.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: I, I, I, I don't know how many days it's been, but this time I checked.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: six weeks so it's the longest I've done without doing a show and I don't know how long forever wasn't planned necessarily I mean kind of I just fell into it as many of you know we have a new baby he's eight and a half months and it's fun and um
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, after my wife's maternity leave ended, she decided not to go back to work.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: And we were just hanging and hanging and then a week went by and two weeks went by.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so it gets harder and harder to go back, like get fired, get the machine fired back up.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and so at some point during the six weeks, I just said, you know what?
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to wait.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just invested here football season is going to be a big schedule which I'll tell you about.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm just going to wait.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: So here we are.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: But we're back.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're back.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm excited about it.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a lot to talk about.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the football stuff, the 49ers practiced on Sunday.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was there.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Are they going to practice on Monday?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be there.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to practice.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be there.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: John Lynch spoke on Saturday.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was there.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: All of this stuff getting ready for the season.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: I've been around the team a lot over the years.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then last year was around the team a lot in a different way.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: As many of you know, Philip and some of the games.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it was 9 or 10 of the games for Greg Papa on radio and and so I'm going to be around the team even more consistently this year than I ever have been because.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because of that situation and and being available to fill in for Greg, but it'll be a little more formal this year So anyway, we're going to talk about the the news Give you a real show not just a life update because that's not you know you like to connect that miss you guys I hope you missed the show a little bit and now you're your your ancient version content But you don't come here to you know, it's isn't a life vlog This is football and 49ers talk that we do here.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the update as it relates to the schedule is that I'm not going to be doing, you know, historically I do a lot of college football and TV.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: I did not sign a contract to do a television.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: College football package this year had a couple opportunities, but the way things played out with the Niners last year led to the opportunity this year to join the broadcast team.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: and so that's what I'll be doing.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: And if Greg is back calling the game that I'll be on the sideline and if Greg is not back calling the game that I'll be in the booth, whether it be for the preseason on TV with Tim Ryan or in the radio booth, but I'll be traveling every week.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: So every week I'll be in the I'll be part of the Fort Ambracist.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: and every road game I'll be traveling.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: So Australia for a week, Mexico City, you know, I get if if there's Colorado Springs before Mexico, whatever it is, Dallas, you know, I know a lot of you, I hear like my buddies do it to you, pick a week and you go to a road game.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, I'll see you guys there too.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: So always let me know if you're if you're doing that if you're be at a game Being touched because I'll be around.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was always around a lot, but I'm gonna be around a lot a lot more.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of the the Career update I guess I'll still be doing college basketball and TV.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna keep this part short Because this is it really now what you came for.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think but some of you are nice and said no I can be updated what you're doing
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so, you know, I'll work for the Big Ten Network the last couple years on TV, uh, I sound like I'm sounding a contract with Versant, which is USA Sports, not to do football, but to do basketball for them, which is the new Pac 12.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, the returning to schools, like Gonzaga, San Diego State, I think it'll be a fun league, and I'll still do Fox and NBC, uh, basketball.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: So part of the Irish Broadcast team, still doing this.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is,
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: We, I talked a lot over the last several months, even, you know, back the last year, we started thinking about what's 2026 going to look like with Bob Sargent, the director of broadcasting for the 40 matters who's always been great to me and an advocate of mine and supportive and gave me this opportunity and, you know, we'll be part of the radio broadcast.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: do my stuff on YouTube and the podcast that doesn't change at all.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then also, you know, in a way that we're going to figure out as we go because it's it's new territory contribute on on the digital side for the 49ers in in some ways.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll work that out, but they got really it's cool because they got really, really talented people behind the scenes and it'll be, it'll be fun to work for them.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll we'll we'll figure that out and
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: Explore and experiment hopefully do some fun stuff that's that's fun for you there So those are the places where I'll be this football season and but you know because the trip to Australia There's just no there's just no time to waste And so I guess that's executed to to dive into into into the now into the football You know the Kyle Shanahan crash story.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: I had some indication Friday like you know Normally they get the news out of the Saturday press conference.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was delayed and it was delayed and
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it was cool to see Kyle was out there today.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I know for a lot of you who, you know, list the podcast and YouTube and there are a lot of people out there today.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, there's a lot of people that cover this team on a regular basis, even when it's not an extra big crowd.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of content.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not going to rehash, you know, this isn't Friday.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't Saturday.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to rehash a lot of it.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I do want to talk about Kyle.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: It was cool to see him out there today.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Mustache, the off season, Shanna Han mustache is still there.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't shave it if I were him.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: I would come back with it kind of the cool sunglasses, not the athletic, you know, like some good, like the same sunglasses I wore to a farewell party for friends going to Italy, like those kind of cool Italian sunglasses, you know, just that acetate rounder shape and he was out there smiling and then.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: and look good, you know.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a big deal.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, one thing that's been said a lot over the, you know, in the ongoing discussions about Kyle Shanahan's place among coaches in the league, and, you know, my belief has been pretty consistent for a long time.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think his place is on tier one.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: He'll turn 47 or he is 47 this year, you know, same age as Bill Walsh when Bill got the nine or job.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: Bill won his first Super Bowl at 50.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, my feeling on Kyle Shanahan is it's established that he's excellent.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: He hasn't won the Super Bowl, but I don't think it's because he can't.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you don't do something.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you can't do something for him.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's that he hasn't.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that he can't.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't want to say it's a matter of time because the Super Bowl's are really hard to win.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: It can never be a matter of time.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, I do think if he gets won he gets two or three.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't think he'll be a one and done guy.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, I think we'll get said about him a lot.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think it sometimes is said this way.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, well, these are one of the best play callers in the league.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't say it that way.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's true, and he's one of the best coaches in the league.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the way they're feeling in for him is, is the evidence.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there's no real playbook for this.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: You don't really have, there's nothing obvious.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think the situation with Chris Firster, it's just, it's really interesting.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought Firster's press conference today was really good.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Firster is a guy who, he's experienced and he's been through a lot in life.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: And because of that, I think, I don't know.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he was like this before, but there is an openness, and a sincerity, and a comfort, a humility, but a comfort.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: confidence.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: All of those things fill, uh, you know, into Y. Chris first or who, you know, offensive line coaches that aren't talking to the media every week, but why he's just natural at, at kind of speaking for the team right now and it makes sense and it's good.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, he always says things, what's the way I love about Kyle Shanahan press conference is, as he says things.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's not all just platitudes and cliches, and that's what's kind of fun about Chris Firster.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited for however many press conference there are of his, hopefully shanahan and this concussion thing doesn't last too long and he can get back.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, we all know enough about concussions to know that timelines are really kind of foolish.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: There's just no way, if you're a player, maybe it's a little stricter, the risks are higher.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: But time lines are foolish, you think you got enough time now, and you know, it looks like you do have enough time now.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: I do think, if I could, if there could be a take on concussions, not the concussions need to take, but here's a take.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, one of your concussion takes, like let's talk about Kyle's health and give me your opinions.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say this.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: The one thing you think that I think about what I think about concussions is bright lights, and not just sunshine, but stadium lights.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then I don't play a night game until week six.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the fear with a concussion is always, you get cleared, it's fine, you can even travel, you know, it's a long trip.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: So you are worried, it's fair to ask that question.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: There's no way to answer that question right now.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but the fear is like, you'll be fine, you think you're fine, you're back to work, you're moving, you're grooving, and then bam, you know, obviously the sun is bright.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, uh, it's not like you can avoid it.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he'll be wearing sunglasses, but um, you do worry, I do worry about it.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'll be thinking about that.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it'll be a distant memory by October 19th when the night is played, uh, the commanders on, on one of my football, but, um,
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I feel I guess a little better about it.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that they don't have a three prime time under the lights games because, you know, that can be, I think it can be challenging for a concussion.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, the obvious thing, it's cliche.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's not, it's not, it's not, it's cliche.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: I saw a car crash on the way home today.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the after effects of it, but like very recent after effects of it, all of you that if you drive in the Bay Area, and this was not a highway crash, but it's, if you don't think about it every day,
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: that you drive, you know, I don't see how you don't.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's, it's so scary.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: And so it always hits close to home.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I heard Matt Barrow say this with Tim Kawakami.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: The type of injuries that you are, you know, he's 47 for a 77 or a 67 year old person could be, could be far more devastating.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: You hear the ribs and the face and the hand.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just, it's a lot, and it's scary, you know, we, I think Trent Williams said it.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you find out about the news after you found out he's okay.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: as it's unfolding, you know, if you're the family or friends or that kind of thing.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, now you see him out there, he's smiling, whatever, but I'm sure it was, you know, especially for, for family of very scary thing, it's, it's, you know, I've been watching work car shop because my wife did not go back to work after the maternity leave, we had to give up the company car, so we're car sharing right now.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: And with the babies, I didn't, I wouldn't have done this before, with the baby, I want you a lot of, I, I, H, S, crash videos.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we are also immune to how damaging a crash at 45 miles an hour can be, because 45, you're like, well, at 80, I know that's kind of dangerous, but 45, you're just cruising.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Now, any of you watching this have been in a crash at 45, but can a test, but it can be devastating.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: What you think is a quote unquote low speed.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's not.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it's obviously just the health, right?
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's the first thing.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: But to get back to the original point,
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is a guy who is known outside of the organization as a great play caller.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think inside of the organization he's known as a great leader and leader doesn't just mean knows what to say to players.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: Leader means is respected for putting everybody in position to be better, including the coaches on offense and defense and including the players on offense and defense and
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: And his meetings are, they're kind of legendary.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_00]: His not QB room meetings, not offensive installs, but his full team lets sit down.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have the clicker, and we're just going to go through situations we're going to talk about.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: They're legendary.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think it can be
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it could be overstated.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think what gets talked about is, well, the play calling, if you can't call it, how will play call it, Kubeyak.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think, I don't care how much player leadership you have.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care how much staff continuity you have.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: That, you know, time is on their side right now.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: But the leadership of a head coach, there is no way to replace a single,
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: a single leader, you know, collaborations great and in this situation, they are very lucky that they have continuity and experience and familiarity, but that is not a permanent solution.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: And they're not saying that it is, but it's, it's, I just am a firm believer, like co captains, co coaches, co CEOs,
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: All that stuff sounds good, but none of it's actually better than want the buck stops here with the big dog.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: And he's the big dog and the buck stops there.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, they could overcome it because of when when this is.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: But make no mistake, he's more than just the play caller.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: He's in charge.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: And player leadership is awesome.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a lot of things players can do that coaches can't, but there are just some basic things.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: When the buck stop here, big dog behind the big desk, when that guy's not around, there are just, you know, having Fred Warner is a gift from a leadership standpoint.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: Fred Warner can't replace Kyle Shannon here, he's not there a week one, can't be done.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't mean you can't win, doesn't mean you can't piece it together, but there is a hole.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: And no one's saying otherwise, but I just think it's a testament to what they've done 10 years.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is 10th year, this is Mani's Bill Walsh.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: And not just him, John Lynch, 10 years.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty incredible.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it has been when you consider post-harbaw, Tom Sula and Chip, and I opened up a cabinet in the meeting room today, and there was headshots of the Chip Kelly coaching staff.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: But when you consider what came after that, it is,
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: 10 out of 10 success.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I want to battle on Barney.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you want to learn Barney.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: When you hire a coach, you go, we can compete for championships for a decade and he'll still be under contract and contract extensions and the GMs.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's all you can do.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: You roll the dice, you try to be around the ball with the chips fall where they may just how many cliches can I get in.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, irreplaceable.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: But because it's been a decade, you know, they can hold it in the same way that I think, like, last year with Brock,
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: Mac Jones went five and three in place of Brock, unbelievable.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't mean you want Mac Jones to be a quarterback for the next three years instead of Brock Perti.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's the solution.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think there's a lot of talk about Brock and we'll look at Mac, they're almost as efficient or some of the numbers were the same and are played out for six, five years, four years, whatever.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a huge Mac Jones believer, but I don't think last year proves that you could just replace Brock Perti with Mac Jones and not skip a beat.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: I also don't think that.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so hopefully he's back in time for this situation to not show the cracks, but make no mistake.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: If it goes on long enough, too long, there are cracks and you know, if it goes on too long part of that is like, well, how do you, what's going to happen when you get to a game?
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: again, it's July 26, July 27, his health is most important.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's not worth rushing back if you're going to deal with a season of headaches and light sensitivity in nausea and all that awful stuff and that, you know, every flight you're like, is it going to be okay?
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: That's so.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: But you just, I mean, it is, it's jarring.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: it is jarring to have you when you when you see axiom like how how bad was it and the answer is bad broken ribs and concussion and broids bad and and good of in worse i think you know if you're looking for one thing that defines what this camp is about and we could go through all the different they got to find a left guard and which punner is it going to be and you know
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: but I think one thing that comes up a lot is explosiveness, and I think let's be really specific about explosiveness, because you know, Nick posts on defense.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: To me, on defense, oh, so Diggi Zua, massive upgrade, massive, massive addition.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like really,
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I think one of the things I'll be interesting once pads come on is Ray Greenlaw.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: But to me, let's be really specific about, let's use an example on explosiveness for offense.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was a really efficient offense.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, efficiency.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: But not explosive.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: And Josh DeBout, the Associate Press, who's been on the show many times, and I think is a genius.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: I was talking to him today on the sideline of practice,
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: And he made such a good point.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I went and pulled the numbers.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: And this is where the niders can really improve.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: And this is where a little bit of a better run game, yeah.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: But this is where Mike Evans, Deshawn Stribbling, really helped.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: The niders last year averaged just 3.72 yards on second and short.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: That was 25th in the NFL.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: 73% of the time, they ran the ball.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: on second and short.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's the ninth most run heavy team on second and short.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: Why is that a problem?
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you a recent story.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: I went to a wedding a few years ago and with about 30 minutes left, the groom came up to a group of guys and said, we haven't met the minimum of the open bar yet.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: In other words, it's paid for.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: start ordering the expensive stuff.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's what we did.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was now all of a sudden $60 shots of how do you say the name of that with the white bottle with the black clot classe classe as well.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's not in terms of what I ordered.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: And now, and you just, you got a free play, you go for it, right?
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the Niners didn't.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners kept ordering well drinks.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: On second and short is when you can take a shot, because if you don't get it, yeah, we'll run it on third and short.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe it'll be four down territory too.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: By contrast, the Rams were almost 5 and 3.7 yards per play, fourth best in the league, on second and short.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: And they did it by throwing the ball, no surprise.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: They threw it 40% of the time, only 60% of the time they ran.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Niners were 73%.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: That was 26th in the league in Run Rate on second in short.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: So they leaned heavy on the past on second in short.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: And why not?
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's a freebie down.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it created a lot of production, almost seven yards per play on second in short.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the Niners didn't play that way
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, today, my heavens makes a sideline catch, you know, I've been talking about the go balls forever.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: I always, if you knew around here, I really, and I don't know how you could be knew around here the last six weeks could I haven't done a show.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: But maybe you knew around here.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: I've talked a lot over the years about how I think the the nine
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Then I just do hit deep balls statistically, but it's not those true like Julio, one on one, go make a play throw the ball down the sideline deep balls.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I think they missed that, that's a quick strike play and they missed it and it's really got to be skinned up and you got to hit it perfectly.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's a big, no, no, no, no my Kevin's one today was not a true like go go.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't deep enough, but it was just beat a guy down the sideline.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the ball, go catch it.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: And, um, and that's what we did.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: Then I always would say this like in the old, the old days, the last few years with Debo, like once a practice they would throw one of those, just it felt, it always felt to me like a Debo's Debo wants one, so try it.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, you know, it didn't really work that much.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's not a thing.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing I'll tell you, the guy I get asked about all the time, rightfully is the day you're on struggling.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think seeing a player, now we saw him in OTS a little bit, but especially when the pads come on, it's an even bigger deal, but even today I noticed a couple of things about him.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes size translates from paper, the same, sometimes it looks a little bigger, somebody says, it's quite look as big.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like to me, John Jennings, who's dribbling now, we're 15, was 6, 3, 2, 12.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: And look, like, both of them have 31 and 5, 8 inch arms.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's not,
- 21:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, by NFL receiver standards, especially if they're heights, though that's not those are not particularly long arms, but they like to me Jennings played bigger than six three to 12.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I think dribbling at six to 207.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he's listed at to me felt bigger on the field today.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: He has bigger hands than Joanne did.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: He made a really nice catch.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Struggling to come in a cross, kind of dropped in the bucket towards the sideline.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was Max Jones through it.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's got 10 in chance, which is the 88th percentile.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you think like Joanne, who didn't have 10 in chance, that he'll be able to make contested catches.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I think he's going to play big.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought Chris first said something, the most important thing.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: What is the most important thing?
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a young player, try to get on the field for Kyle Shannon's receiver or running back, I guess.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: At running back is protect the quarterback, don't fumble the ball, be in the right place.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: At receiver, it's being the right place, nor you're supposed to be able to block.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I think the other thing at receiver for the Niners is you've got to be there's kiddo, there's McCaffrey, there's Pierce all, there's juice, there you, you, uh, now there's Mike Evans like you have to be able to be ready.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: You got to be in the right place all the time.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: You got to be where Brock thinks you're going to be all the time because you might only get to opportunities.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: Don't blow it.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: So Chris first,
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: He knows where to be.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: He understands the play, you know, and this is part of that I just kind of go big in terms of players, draft and free agency, but they're with their older experience.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: So do you know where to be?
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: Stribbling, you know, like a lot of guys now, because you've been on multiple schools, he has had to learn offense.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Although, you know, running the air raid is not exactly, it's very different.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: But the point is, he appears to be doing the things that give him a chance to make an immediate impact.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: And for Kyle at receiver, we know that's not always easy.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think there's youth on this team.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's so easy to get passed up.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it felt like last year, Jordan wasn't.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like, Jordan wasn't.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: It passed Jacob County last year.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: Is he going to still be ahead of Jacob County this year?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I thought he looked ready to play.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: last year, Jordan Watkins, Wookie receiver.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: He had that big catch in the first preseason game against Denver, which, you know, things happen in the preseason that don't translate, but I thought he was going to be ready.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's how it felt.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't just based on the preseason, it was also based on, I'm watching practice.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think Jordan James, to me, has felt like, and he's had opportunities active.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: He played on special teams, but I do watch Kale on Black Run and go, he might pass him.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, do you get to be ahead, or is the rookie that comes in also experience and write it a role?
- 24:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think to me though, when the pads come on, it's going to be about watching Drake Greenland.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's played 10 games in two years.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: He was a disastrous signing for Denver.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, not disastrous for Denver.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: They were the number three scoring defense in the league.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: I had a chance to win the Super Bowl.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: But the point is, he has not played a lot since come in since that Achilles injury had the injury last year.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: for Denver the quad and then it was you know it wasn't good for him clearly wasn't good for them they didn't need them they didn't feel like they needed them because they were really good without him so he's got something to prove you know it'll be out there with Freddy made the first play today and Fred made the second one on defense you know but it's just tag but you know we could make a long list of things to watch it's just it's great that's that's what I do right everybody you if you're a fan who's going out to practice
- 25:00[SPEAKER_00]: I want to watch fifty-seven, Greg Greenlaw.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: I want to watch the punters.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: I do want to watch the punters.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, watch left guard.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: Watch the receivers, you know, but to me, that's when the pads come on, that'll be at the top of the list.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: Normally a lot of you know when we do a show I dive right into the takes the topics of the day that's a good business on YouTube matters a little less on the podcast, but I try not to spend too much time on on the stuff you didn't come for today.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's been six weeks.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I did start to show with a little bit more the personal, which I hope is okay.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, I love doing this because.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: Even though it's, I don't see you watching it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: I get messages from you or I run into people and they say, yeah, you know, I do feel a connection sort of a, that comes from the podcast and from YouTube.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I enjoy that.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's fun.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I really enjoyed just hanging out.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: I, I think this will be a very different fall for me because I'm used to traveling for college football.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: on TV, which means, especially in the big 10 the last two years for me, you know, you're flying east a lot, which you do Friday meetings, you meet with the coaches on Friday mornings, it means I'm traveling on Thursday.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I'll miss doing college football in TV this year.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's no question, but there was a time where I thought maybe I would be able to do both this year, the college football and the 49ers this year, and just the schedules became, it just became too difficult.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't going to work.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: It can, it can work, but you got to have the right
- 26:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard, it's just challenging to you got to have the right TV package in terms of time slots of those games like they got to be noon eastern games if you're going to make it out.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_00]: In time to get home Saturday nights so you can be so anyway.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so it'll be a different, you know, for me, it's meant like being around the Niners, I've been around, but I wasn't really going to like a Thursday or Friday.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't out there.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: What was going on?
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't here as much on on YouTube or the podcast on those days.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: So it'll be, you know, it'll be mostly focused there.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: And, um, I'm excited to be able to, to focus on that as much as, uh, I'd like the idea of doing college football and the NFL on Saturdays, Sundays, and, um,
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: double paycheck.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: This will be great.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: And it'll be, it'll be, it's, I'm looking at it as a little, not a little bit.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's, there's definitely an element over that's like how there's a, what a gift.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: My son's first year of life to, I'll be home on subs.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm never home on Saturdays.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: Hope nine hours of home game.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be home on a Saturday.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like, so that's cool.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm, and I'm excited about that.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm excited to spend the season in the NFL.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_00]: and hopefully be able to do even more here.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, anyway, welcome back to you, welcome back to me.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: I know some of you will be at a nine-ers practice and if you are, let me know that you're going be great to say hello.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: I will say this, I get a lot of Instagram DMs.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: I do not spend a lot of time on Instagram or X for that matter.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_00]: I've set up, I spent a lot of time on this.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I wasn't doing shows, I was spending a lot of time on.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Um, kind of streamlining creating some systems for my for this for NFL game preparation.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: That sort of thing and created some, uh, some kind of news feeds that allow me to just get what I want and not be on social.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, uh, if you want to get a hold of me, uh, I guess an old school email is better than a DM.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: And that's just a guy at hayguy.co.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the that's the best way.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's the best way and yeah, let me know you're gonna be at a game I think You know, well games or Sundays will be on the road so there may be a Friday or Saturday where I'm out and whatever town we're in not that I'm looking for You know, I'm There's just maybe some events.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: I guess is what I'm getting at or you may be and I may be so let me know if you're gonna be there If you beta practice you want to say what's up.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know so
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: appreciate y'all, hit that like button, subscribe to the channel, and we're going to be firing this stuff up.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're off and rolling, so I'm here now.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm back.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm back, baby.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: All right y'all, talk to you.
