- 0:00Speaker 1: Benjamin Watson, former Patriot, amongst some others, but remember him
- 0:04Speaker 1: from the Eagles first Super Bowl and Benjamin, first off,
- 0:08Speaker 1: you look like you could still play I.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Look this way, but if you saw my MRIs and
- 0:13Speaker 2: my and my X rays and it.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Will be a no go.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yes, right, I did not know that it was Media Row,
- 0:20Speaker 2: now I was. I was still saying Radio Row.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Well, I think a lot.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Well, we're a radio station, so we are more still
- 0:26Speaker 1: Radio Row part of it, but they have actually changed
- 0:29Speaker 1: the official name to Media Row.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, the more you know, you learn something new every
- 0:33Speaker 2: every single day, I'll be I'll be sure to tag
- 0:36Speaker 2: you know, media Row not Radio Row on Instagram.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Catch one of the one of these years. I think
- 0:40Speaker 1: most people still say radio Row.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Right, Well, it's gonna it's gonna take you know, unfortunately,
- 0:44Speaker 2: he's gonna take a generation of us of us old
- 0:46Speaker 2: heads to uh retire.
- 0:48Speaker 3: That's been gonna happen and then yeah, and then and.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Then we're gonna come back here and it's gonna be
- 0:53Speaker 2: all like all sci fi and technology.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, the AI will put have you guys been driving
- 0:58Speaker 1: around the town with the cars that don't have anybody
- 1:00Speaker 1: drive right by me?
- 1:02Speaker 5: Where I couldn't believe it because you know, we're from Philly. Yeah,
- 1:05Speaker 5: we're just to get them, but they haven't been approved.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Really, I couldn't.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Well, there's no way, Mike, that they let them drive downtown.
- 1:11Speaker 5: How could they possibly?
- 1:12Speaker 4: Last night they were everywhere in downtown.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So I live outside Atlanta, whenever i'm downtown, they're all
- 1:18Speaker 2: over the place. I mean, honestly, you know, I was
- 1:21Speaker 2: driving one time and I was pulling out from the
- 1:23Speaker 2: Whole Foods in downtown Atlanta and one of them was
- 1:26Speaker 2: like waiting for me to turn left.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Like let me, let me go, let me go first,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and the camera like stick an arm out and wave
- 1:33Speaker 1: you in.
- 1:34Speaker 4: No, I mean, just the weymoth get road rage. I
- 1:38Speaker 4: don't know.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But last night we were in awful traffic and the
- 1:41Speaker 1: Waymo was next to us, and it's like, you know, blinker,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and it's wild to see it kind of all materialized.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But I mean you think about it, and you think
- 1:49Speaker 2: about you know, GPS and the technology there, and you know,
- 1:53Speaker 2: it's it's scary, but also it's I mean, that's I mean,
- 1:56Speaker 2: the reason why we're able to sit here right now
- 1:58Speaker 2: is because there was a technological advance it's point, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: to be able to have a sitting here in Sarta
- 2:02Speaker 2: Claire talking to people way back and where in New
- 2:04Speaker 2: Jersey where you guys are.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So it's uh, it's scary, but isn't it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I was talking to a woman who was actually riding
- 2:09Speaker 2: in a way moment and she was like, that was actually.
- 2:11Speaker 3: One of the best rides I've ever had.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Does it work though?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Do you just open the door get in and like, yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I have no I have you see it? Yeah, yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 4: I've seen it.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It's like she was like, yeah, I rode over here
- 2:24Speaker 2: in one of those things and I never felt more safe.
- 2:28Speaker 3: That's crazy. And the driver wasn't head.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Like I would have to take a xanax to be
- 2:32Speaker 4: in one of those things.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I guess so well.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Benjamin watches with us everybody, And one of the reasons
- 2:37Speaker 1: we were excited to talk to you is because today,
- 2:39Speaker 1: by the way, is the anniversary of the eagles first
- 2:42Speaker 1: ever Super Bowl win. You were in a game where
- 2:46Speaker 1: you defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a very interesting
- 2:50Speaker 1: super Bowl. You had the whole mcnabbed. It was the
- 2:53Speaker 1: t irvis, the t oo.
- 2:55Speaker 3: So as the opposing.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Team that year, what was like the whole too, gonna play,
- 3:02Speaker 1: not gonna play. How did you guys in New England
- 3:05Speaker 1: view his disappearance from the playoffs and then potential return
- 3:10Speaker 1: to that game.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Well, you know, you've listened to Coach Belichick enough times
- 3:13Speaker 2: to know that it was not a big deal and
- 3:15Speaker 2: we're gonna play whoever's out there, and whoever's out there
- 3:18Speaker 2: on the field, that's who we're gonna deal with.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And we're worried about what we have to do.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And I've got enough to worry about here going over
- 3:23Speaker 2: first down, second down, third down, and we're all trying
- 3:26Speaker 2: to just do our job.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Did that sound Did I sound like? Did I give
- 3:28Speaker 3: you the doesn't answer? Clearly not.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But that's that's what it was for me. It was
- 3:37Speaker 2: kind of a bittersweet time. I couldn't play in the game.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I tore my a cl that year, so I was out.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Oh I did.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So it was difficult for me to see the team
- 3:47Speaker 2: play and not be able to be on the field
- 3:48Speaker 2: and be part of it. But that entire year, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: that's what it was. It was stacking win after win
- 3:54Speaker 2: after win. It was about preparation. It was about not
- 3:58Speaker 2: getting too high or too low, and I was able
- 4:00Speaker 2: to learn as a rookie what it meant to be
- 4:02Speaker 2: successful in the NFL.
- 4:04Speaker 3: And really that comes down.
- 4:05Speaker 2: To being prepared, being able to flush the bad, get
- 4:09Speaker 2: better off of the good, take care of your body,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and really come to work every single you know, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 4:15Speaker 2: Saturday with kind of a fresh energy for a new week.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Could you feel that the tide was turning there in
- 4:22Speaker 6: New England, that that was obviously trending towards all the
- 4:26Speaker 6: greatness that they went on to have.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Well, really, that situation was one thing was Belichick did
- 4:31Speaker 2: talk a lot about was the fact that teams that
- 4:33Speaker 2: had won the Super Bowl previously at least made to
- 4:35Speaker 2: the playoffs usually didn't perform well the next year. And
- 4:39Speaker 2: so if you remember, I was still in college, but
- 4:43Speaker 2: they had won the Super Bowl the year before, and
- 4:45Speaker 2: so when I get drafted, I mean that's when they did,
- 4:47Speaker 2: you know, back to back Super Bowls, And so there
- 4:49Speaker 2: was a big you know, meetings that the mantra was,
- 4:54Speaker 2: let's not end up following the statistics of not being
- 4:57Speaker 2: successful back to back years.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And what are the reasons is why teams aren't successful?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, everybody gets a commercial, everybody gets a new contract,
- 5:06Speaker 2: people start feeling like, you know, they've arrived. It becomes
- 5:10Speaker 2: more I than we. And that was something that was
- 5:14Speaker 2: preached over and over over again. And then when you
- 5:16Speaker 2: had guys like you know, the current head coach of
- 5:18Speaker 2: the New England Patriots, like Rabel, those types of veteran
- 5:22Speaker 2: players didn't allow that to happen to that team. Rodney Harrison,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know Rabel, you know Bruski. Those guys didn't allow
- 5:30Speaker 2: that to happen.
- 5:30Speaker 4: The commercials.
- 5:31Speaker 6: We've seen a bunch of Saquon aj Brown all off
- 5:34Speaker 6: season and then throughout the season.
- 5:36Speaker 4: How much was there something to that? Do you think?
- 5:38Speaker 6: And getting consumed with all of that that keeps you
- 5:41Speaker 6: from maybe a day in the weight room here and
- 5:44Speaker 6: doing those things that you need to do as a player.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It's super important. And you know, this is a different eerror.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Players are used to having publicity in a way that
- 5:52Speaker 2: we weren't used to it. Every single player has their
- 5:55Speaker 2: own TV. It's called a cell phone, you know. I mean,
- 5:59Speaker 2: everybody has their own platform now. So it's different than
- 6:02Speaker 2: it was that they're used to having these things, even
- 6:04Speaker 2: in college. But there is something to being able to
- 6:07Speaker 2: handle success, and handling success many times it's more difficult
- 6:12Speaker 2: than rebounding from failure.
- 6:15Speaker 1: You mentioned Belichick and obviously what's going on now he
- 6:19Speaker 1: doesn't get into the Hall of Fame. But what is
- 6:21Speaker 1: it like the dynamic between such a high profile coach
- 6:25Speaker 1: and quarterback when you're on that team.
- 6:29Speaker 3: You know, every dynamic is different.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I think for us, having a Tom Brady meant you
- 6:36Speaker 2: never felt like you were going to lose a game.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I don't ever remember feeling like I was going to
- 6:41Speaker 2: lose a game.
- 6:42Speaker 3: In New England.
- 6:43Speaker 2: We lost plenty of games, you know, not a lot,
- 6:45Speaker 2: but we lost, but it was like you always.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Felt like you had a chance.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And part of that was because in practice you felt
- 6:51Speaker 2: like you had to win every single drill. Like to
- 6:53Speaker 2: Tom and Rabel used to go ad it. You've heard
- 6:56Speaker 2: this before. They used to go add it.
- 6:58Speaker 3: In practice.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean, you know, you got the Michigan Ohio state thing.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You know, you got the offense defense thing. They're cussing
- 7:05Speaker 2: each other out, you know in seven on seven. You
- 7:08Speaker 2: know when one of them scores, when one of them
- 7:10Speaker 2: makes it stop like they used to go add it.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But that was how competitive our practices were.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And so when you got to a game, you felt
- 7:17Speaker 2: like I've been there before. Everybody's calm, We're just gonna
- 7:21Speaker 2: go and do what we do. We're just gonna go
- 7:23Speaker 2: literally like do your job, and so that was an
- 7:26Speaker 2: awesome thing. The relationship is different, though in every situation.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I remember going to New Orleans and being with Drew
- 7:34Speaker 2: Brees and Sean Payton.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Their relationship on the.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Surface is closer than Tom and Do maybe because Shawn's
- 7:43Speaker 2: the offensive quarterback and offensive coach and Drew as a quarterback.
- 7:46Speaker 2: But they used to converse more during practice than I
- 7:50Speaker 2: ever saw Tom and Bill. But part of that I
- 7:54Speaker 2: think it is because of the offense. But every situation
- 7:56Speaker 2: is different, every relationship is different. But they have to
- 7:59Speaker 2: be able to communicate with each other. They got to
- 8:00Speaker 2: have a trust trust factor.
- 8:02Speaker 4: With each other.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Benjamin, in your Best a Bridge version, could you tell
- 8:06Speaker 5: us what made Brady so great?
- 8:14Speaker 4: But he's got to think it a lot.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, I got well because there are a lot
- 8:18Speaker 2: of things that made him great. I mean, clearly his
- 8:20Speaker 2: six foot five, he's strong. Everybody sees his uh, his uh,
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know, his his combine video. But I mean the
- 8:29Speaker 2: dude has the stuff to be the guy like he's tall,
- 8:33Speaker 2: got big hands, all the measurable, he's got.
- 8:35Speaker 3: That sort of thing.
- 8:36Speaker 2: He's really smart. But what made him great is he's
- 8:39Speaker 2: never satisfied. It's never enough.
- 8:43Speaker 1: So you were a first round pick and he is
- 8:46Speaker 1: a seventh round pick.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yet they and they missed that. Well, yeah, you
- 8:52Speaker 3: can look at it two ways.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You could say, man, we got him in the sixth
- 8:55Speaker 2: round and it was so great. But also it's like,
- 8:56Speaker 2: if you knew he was gonna be so great, why
- 8:58Speaker 2: would you let him fall to the sixth rounds? So
- 8:59Speaker 2: you see, you can't take credit for everything. But going
- 9:04Speaker 2: back to Tom, like every single drill, whether it was the
- 9:08Speaker 2: off season program when he's competing with Matt Castle to
- 9:13Speaker 2: see who can like run the most or lift the
- 9:16Speaker 2: most weights was a competition.
- 9:18Speaker 4: That's Michael Jordan man, same thing. I know, we gotta
- 9:21Speaker 4: let you go.
- 9:21Speaker 6: But when you said he wasn't satisfied, would you see
- 9:24Speaker 6: that even after a Super Bowl win, like it didn't
- 9:26Speaker 6: last long before that didn't satisfy him.
- 9:28Speaker 3: There was an interview with Tom. I didn't contact the interview.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I don't know what outlet it was on, but he
- 9:32Speaker 2: was talking about you know the fact that he had
- 9:35Speaker 2: won six well, I guess it was five Super Bowls
- 9:37Speaker 2: at that time or four, and just it's always the
- 9:41Speaker 2: next week. And that is a tough way to live
- 9:45Speaker 2: at time, because now you don't fully enjoy things. There's
- 9:50Speaker 2: a balance there, but there's also this inner drive that
- 9:54Speaker 2: he had that premeated the entire locker room. And my
- 9:58Speaker 2: last year in New England, I came back after being
- 10:01Speaker 2: gone for nine years and my locker was next to Tom's. Wow,
- 10:04Speaker 2: they put the two old guys together. And that one
- 10:07Speaker 2: year is when I really got to know him the
- 10:09Speaker 2: most because we were both older and more accomplished, and
- 10:14Speaker 2: had kids and were married, and so we could talk
- 10:16Speaker 2: about all these things outside of the game, and I
- 10:18Speaker 2: got to know him more as a person.
- 10:20Speaker 3: He is a he's such a genuine guy.
- 10:23Speaker 2: He's such a genuine, honest, like loving, even like loving person.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And I so thoroughly enjoyed that year because I got
- 10:31Speaker 2: to see him in the light that I had before.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Benjamin.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Watching everybody tell everybody out there about the podcast and how.
- 10:37Speaker 3: They can find your stuff, I appreciate it.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I have a podcast called The Just Life, The Just
- 10:41Speaker 2: Life and to Live Justly is what the podcast is about.
- 10:46Speaker 2: So I interview people who are engaged in different issues
- 10:49Speaker 2: of justice. So whether that be human trafficking, whether it
- 10:52Speaker 2: be racial justice, whether it be poverty, entrepreneurs that feed
- 10:57Speaker 2: people through their technology. I talked to those people with
- 11:01Speaker 2: the purpose and the hope of encouraging anybody listening that
- 11:04Speaker 2: they can get involved in issues of justice. You know,
- 11:06Speaker 2: justice isn't just a moment, it's a way of life.
- 11:09Speaker 2: So The Just Life is on all platforms YouTube, Apple,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and Spotify. But one of the issues is human trafficking.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Right now, there are fifty million people in the world
- 11:19Speaker 2: that are in modern day slavery. So International Justice Mission
- 11:23Speaker 2: is an organization that I'm partnering with to bring awareness
- 11:25Speaker 2: to that and they go and combat trafficking in nineteen
- 11:28Speaker 2: different countries. And so people can learn about that at
- 11:31Speaker 2: IJM dot org and also check out my podcast wherever
- 11:34Speaker 2: you get your podcast.
- 11:35Speaker 1: IJM dot org. Everybody awesome stuff. By the way, twenty
- 11:40Speaker 1: years ago you ran champ Valley down. How often do
- 11:42Speaker 1: you get asked about that?
- 11:44Speaker 4: Do a lot?
- 11:45Speaker 3: A lot? And what's twenty years ago? It's crazy is
- 11:47Speaker 3: twenty years Where did the time go? How did you
- 11:50Speaker 3: catch them.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I didn't want to be cussed out by the bill
- 11:55Speaker 2: the next day for not chasing them. And so at
- 11:57Speaker 2: some point it turns, it turns.
- 11:59Speaker 4: The point it out of the exactly, exactly exactly, he
- 12:02Speaker 4: did his job.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And he sat down with us. That was his job
- 12:05Speaker 1: for the last couple of minutes. Benjamin Watson, everybody, IJM
- 12:09Speaker 1: dot org. Check that out, listen to the podcast. It's
- 12:12Speaker 1: for a great cause and it's great stuff to learn
- 12:15Speaker 1: and hear from. Benjamin Watson. Thank you so much, man,
- 12:18Speaker 1: We appreciate it. Benjamin Watson, everybody, former Patriot among other
- 12:22Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Champion, played with Cleveland.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And Baltimore and so many other stops in the NFL.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He was kind enough to join us.
