- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Crafted Connections.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: We are doing the dang thing today with a solo episode.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I'm coming on, I'm sharing my big scary goal for 2026.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And uh it's one of those things where I took a little bit of a breather from goals, life be lifing.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: It was almost scary to set them, and I've been easing back into it.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: But but there's one in particular that I'm like, let's commit to this, let's stick with it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: The big scary goal of a$100,000 salary.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So this episode is covering the six life adjustments I made to support a hundred thousand dollar paycheck in 2026.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: It's a big one, it's scary.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: When I hit publish on this episode, I'm gonna be taking some deep breaths, and I'm really proud of myself for that.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I know you all probably hear me say that a lot, but we need to be proud of ourselves.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Returning to this big scary goal, right?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: A hundred thousand dollar salary.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: What does that actually look like?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: In a lot of businesses, the goal is to hit six figures, and I'm really happy to say that I've I've done that a couple times, but I've learned that six figures does not necessarily a supported life make.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It is very easy for things to get lost in the sauce at the six-figure mark, and you can spend money on anything in a business and really get mixed up in it all.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So this coming September, I will have worked for myself for 10 years.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So what better year than, you know, that 10-year mark?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Well, honestly, it would be a nice first-year mark, right?
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: But but let's let's pretend like it's a beautiful celebration gift that I'm giving to myself of paying myself this hundred thousand dollar salary.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm one that in the past I've gotten very, very caught up in numbers and in a very like unrelenting, unkind way, without like an actual system to support this intense big goal.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And that's what this episode is actually about.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: It's okay, yeah, okay, I want to pay myself$100,000, but it's not necessarily about the$100,000.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: It is about building systems, approaching my business like the business owner who pays herself that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And I will hit this goal.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Whether it be this year or next year, I will hit this goal.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's the year after that, but ultimately this goal will be hit, just like my goal to hit six figures in the business eventually happened.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: We put in the work, we set up the systems, it comes together.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Don't get me wrong, I would like it to be this year, and I'm going to do everything in my power to do that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Everything in my power, including telling people on the interwebs via my podcast.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And so after all these lessons and experiences and foundational work, it's time for me to go for it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: It's time for me to commit.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And the best way to do that is really set up myself for success.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And so there's six things I'm doing to do that.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Number one, eliminate anything that takes energy away from this goal.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: This is not about me eliminating all things and only working on this goal.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: I want to be a full human.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: The reason I have this goal is to pay myself, not the business, this number.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So it's not about me being like only business, business, business, but it is about me getting serious about the return of investment on my time and energy.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So what am I doing day in, day out that fills my cup, supports this goal, and gets me to it faster?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Am I spread too thin with 700 different projects or 700 different objectives or doing things outside of the business that maybe is not actually feeding me as an individual or feeding my family or actually supporting the cash flow in my business, supporting the potential client connections in my business.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And sometimes, like you can do anything for a certain amount of time, and it will still bring in those connections, right?
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: But it's really important to be like, what is the the actual return?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Is it actually what you're putting in is coming back?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And you really have to spend time with that.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And I have found this to be hard.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I have found this to be hard.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I'm still doing it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: I'm constantly like taking inventory, what what needs to go, what is really working, where where is the return?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And so in that, I have started to cut things out and ask myself, does the return on this investment pay me back?
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: And in a way too, that it pays me back sooner rather than later.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I've also done the thing where you're like, cool, it's an investment, and the investment maybe will take, you know, a year or two, three years, four years, five years.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And there's always a time and place for that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I'm not about turning down like a return over, you know, a 10-year period or what have you.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Like, I understand where there's a time and a place for that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, how do I make sure I'm supported today, tomorrow, the end of this year, so that things just feel really good?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited to see how that looks.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: It will be cool to jump on the pod this time next year and see where I'm at from this experience, how it all came together and and what I cut out and what the result was of cutting those things out, and what I poured into, and then what came back from those pouring into's.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So really cool and really excited how that all looks.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Number two, being honest with myself about my prices.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: This one is such a topic for business owners.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And I think often, or at least in my own experience, I've gotten into women business owner groups and immediately they're like, your prices are probably too low.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: You should be tripling your prices.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Cool, yeah, maybe that's the case.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Maybe your prices are too low, but you also have to read the room.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I've made the mistake of looking at my prices and then just being like, well, they said to raise it by three times, so I do that, and then like the people that I already have trusted connections with are like, excuse me?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: What?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: That's not what we decided.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And so it's like easing into that.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Where am I right now?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Where haven't I actually raised my prices to reflect inflation, to reflect my skill set, to reflect the longevity of a relationship?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: And how can I make sure that I'm I'm doing that?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And this goes back to being honest with myself.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: It's not about listening to what everybody else says you should be doing, it's doing your research.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: It's taking a look at how much, you know, how much things cost, how much people are willing to pay for something, uh, and how much you need for things to work out.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So when I'm making a budget or when I'm putting together pricing on something, what does it really take to execute this?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: What does it really take for me to like really deliver for this client?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: What is the industry standard?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna be like double everybody else?
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Like I'm not gonna get any work if that's the case.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna be a quarter of everyone else?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna be able to survive if that's the case.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And then also I'll ask myself, where do I land in all this with 10 plus years experience in communications, in video, in storytelling?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Like, where do I fall in that?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Because I also like have come across someone who's fresh out of college who has the same prices as me and me being like, oh gosh, I probably know a little bit more because I've done a little bit more and I've been around the block a little bit more.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: So, really, like I said, being honest with myself about my prices.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And it's not about taking everybody's information in and applying what they say you should, but rather combining research with what feels right and what your experience is, and then going from there and navigating accordingly.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Already I have found this has been super, super, super helpful towards this goal that I'm working towards.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Number three, build my personal brand ecosystem.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So I say personal brand ecosystem because I think we talk about personal brand so much.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I absolutely agree that it is a non-negotiable, obviously.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: I'm all about story, I'm all about that journey and I'm all about telling our story, putting ourselves out there, being visible.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Can you hear?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I'm just like out of breath because it's like I talk about it so much.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm into personal brand.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I'm looking at it like an ecosystem, though, because me as a person, I'm a very multifaceted person.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I have a lot of interests, I pursue lots of creative projects, I connect with a wide array of humans.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: You'll notice that in all the guests I have on this podcast, even you can just see how like all these different walks of life.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: I'm loving how that's starting to come together as I'm a year into the podcast.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And so, in that, the personal brand ecosystem is finding a way to include all parts of myself in a very holistic picture of who I am, what I do, and how I show up.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: So that when I click with someone and they're like, I want your help, mapping out my story, mapping out my marketing, advising, you know, my video production needs, they know immediately this is a good fit because they know who I am because they've maybe been consuming the content that I put out there.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: In the case here, we've got the podcast, Crafted Connections.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: That's one of many, many pieces.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I have been doing a little series on Instagram called uh Day Blank of Posting as a 33-year-old nomadic business owner, right?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And so that gives a very full picture, right?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: If I'm doing it on the daily, that series gives a very full picture of what it's like day in, day out, right?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Some days are super boring.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: I seem to be baking cookies with my mother a lot recently, which I'm not mad about.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And then it's also the traveling, the connecting with people, the networking events, the getting headshots, the spending the day editing.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's boring.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I'm just sitting at a desk, but it gives you a picture of like what I do day in, day out.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: You know, my LinkedIn has its own air of expertise, and it's a great place to connect with who I serve, those decision makers.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna speak to those people differently than the people who are on my Instagram and like are just vibing on my day in, day out, who are just curious behind the curtain.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I want to like offer some expertise on the LinkedIn side of things uh and some personality.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Like I the personality has to be a part of it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then also I always consider, and I love this, the idea that personal brand is a part of like your interactions with humans.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: So when I get coffee with someone, I'm gonna be talking to you very similarly to like what I'm talking like now.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Ideally, it'll be very similar.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It'll be dynamic, I'll be excited, I'll be intrigued in what you think and what you say, uh like I am with my guests.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: And so it's all part of the picture, what you're experiencing online in my content, and then also in real life.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And then also when you work with me, all that is part of it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: But to give that clear picture and to show up regularly, be visible is a part of like attracting the right, perfect, ideal people, like I said, to my ecosystem, to my environment, so that we can thrive together.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And I flip and love it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Hey y'all.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: You know I love telling stories, gathering stories, and finding a way to help people connect their story with the people that will get it.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And that's what my story strategy sessions are all about.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: So over at Calhoun Creative Consulting, my strategic storytelling firm, we do one-on-one and or facilitated workshops in relation to really honing in the strategy around your story.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: It's a bit of messaging meets content creation, meets storytelling, and then how do we put that out in the world?
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: How do we show up regularly?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: There's a bit of mindset work around it, right?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: To actually tell your story, whether you're launching something new or trying to rework your brand or just feeling a little foggy on how to communicate with your people.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: This is how to get clear.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: We'll dig into things like your narrative, how to uncover what matters most, maybe map out a few content pillars while we're at it.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: You'll also get a recording of our session so you can revisit the conversation anytime you like.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Let's shape a story that actually feels like you.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: So book yours today.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: There is a link in the show notes.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And hey, while you're at it, use the code podcast, all caps, P-O-D-C-A-S-T for 25% off your session.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I would be honored to spend time with you and suss out your story.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Let's dive back into the episode, shall we?
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Number four.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I am going to stop eating my profits, particularly in how I build out project budgets.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So, my my background in video production, it is very easy to start doing a little bit too much spec work where you make something with a certain style, low to no budget with the intention of attracting someone to hire you for a very similar job.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of video projects, you can all of a sudden like lose the plot of the actual how much something costs versus how much you're actually going to be making on it versus like what are you paying yourself for the service?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: It disintegrates very quickly.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And I've just done that for a lot of years.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: So I'm being very cautious when I put something out there that we're including travel, that we're including the hotels, that we're including like things like that that have eaten away from that budget paying me, and that budget just like covering the fact that like you have to go somewhere and you need the equipment, right?
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: You need to pay the vendors.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I'm being so, so aware of that and making sure that I'm not building up budgets that like don't actually have profit and that I'm not doing things that eat away at the profits of things by just like being like, well, this is a passion project and it will yield a return on the investment.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Telling myself that is not the same as not the same as actually tracking that.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm being very, very careful with that this year as well.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And moving forward, frankly.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Number five, I have budgeted my entire business with clarity and rigor.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: So I am very clear on what I want to spend this year.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: I am very, very clear on what I want to spend this year.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I'm very, very clear on how much of my budget percentage needs to go where.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm also being very strict about sticking to that.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: There was a time and a place where that's not the healthiest thing for me in the past, but at this moment in time, it is a really healthy thing.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And I say that because I'm coming out of a chapter of, oh my goodness, there are so many things you can spend money on in a business.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: If you are a business owner or you've honestly, I mean, like in your own household budget.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: There's so many things, all of a sudden you get distracted, you're like, shiny thing, I want that.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And that happened to me in my business in a lot of ways.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: But particularly as I'm living this solopreneur life, it's very, very easy to be like, oh, I should go to that conference, oh, I should hire this person to do that.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: It's knowing what I want to spend my money on, what the intention behind all those things are.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And and also if something comes up that I am excited about and I want to do, I will not be cutting into what I've set aside to pay myself in order to do that thing.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I've spent a lot of time putting what is like air quote personal money towards growth and personal development things, which I love.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I love those things.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Like I've always been into self-help books.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I love learning more, I love educating myself.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: And also, I've overdone it time and time again in the past, and so I'm being very clear with myself.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: This is what the money's going towards.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, you want to go to this conference in June?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Then let's go hit some people up and let's make that money so you can pay for it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Not, oh, I'll just get on the payment plan and then I'll, you know, the money will come.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: And it just it seems self-explanatory.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: I know it does.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Anybody who's who doesn't have a brain like mine might be like, yeah, Caitlin, you dum-dum.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: And it's like, yeah, but I I gotta be clear with myself, right?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I know how I operate and I get distracted by shiny things.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I'm all about squirrel, and I'm not gonna do that.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stay focused and we're going to spend the money on what we intended it to be spent on.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: If anything pops up that I'm excited about, we're gonna get clear on where that's gonna come from.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: And it's definitely not coming out of the existing budget, it's not coming out of the money that's going towards paying me and my household.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: So, yay! This is so fun, right?
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take a break before six real quick and like lighten it up a little bit because I do feel like I'm getting intense.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And that's a part, honestly, of my healing process, right?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: To not be so harsh about it, but rather like lean into this with the excited feeling of like, wait, what?
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I would pay myself that much?
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Because I'm gonna tell you, like, yes, even the years where I brought got my business to six figures, I was paying myself pennies and and doing a lot with a little on the personal side of things, and I just don't want to do it anymore.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And it's okay.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And that's where it's like, it's maybe not about the six figures in my personal paycheck, but rather starting to think like that, starting to prioritize investing in myself on a personal level, which means taking my weekends, which means making sure the me money, the me and fill money does not go towards all these shiny objects in my business with like a false promise of return.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So thank you for that leisurely chill break.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Now we're going back to the last thing that I'm gonna do, which is invest in those who invest in me.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And this can be in a lot of ways, but I mostly mean it in really being clear who I'm spending time with, who I'm giving energy to, and making sure that it's the people that are cheering me on with this goal.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: In the case, if I say this to someone, they're like, oh, how are you gonna do that?
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: That's not possible.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: The naysayers are just, there's no time for that.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, no thank you.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I've noticed this pattern in my my network recently, and there's a longer episode about this, like a collect your super fans episode is coming out soon because I have noticed in my network recently, nobody is out here being like, that's your price, excuse you.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And I would say this is probably happening for a few reasons.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: I went through quite the dip in life, 2023 to 2024, quite the rock bottom.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: So that that really shook out a lot of people that that would even say, Well, you can't, what are you doing?
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: That's not possible.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: A lot of those people got shook out during that hard time.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: It's also because my mindset around it is changing.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: What I'm thinking to myself is not you can't do it, it's not possible.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: But rather I'm like looking and mapping it out, and I'm very clear and intentional.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: I've got the experience, I've made the mistakes, and this is what it's gonna look like.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: That is being reflected in the people I'm talking to, the people that I'm surrounding myself with, and it matters.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, you can mindset over matter anything, but it really, really helps if the people you're talking to on a regular basis, the people who fill your time, who fill your cup, are also supporting these big scary goals, who are cheering you on, who are like, F yeah, you got this, or you tell them how much you charge an hour, and they're like, Yay, that's amazing.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: You're so worth that.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And I've gotten that back to me, and I'm so excited because I'm just gonna keep nurturing that that community and that group.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: And a lot of folks who listen to this podcast are in that bucket, and I I'm so grateful for you all.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: And when you press play, when I see you in real life, when you say nice things to me, when you when you even like, you know, the podcast drop announcements, it's that.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Those are the people that are on your team, those are the people that are on my team that I am just gonna keep pouring back into because they they're nurturing me and doing it in a way that that works for all of us.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: With that, I'm gonna do a quick review of the six life adjustments I made to support a hundred thousand dollar paycheck in 2026.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Number one, eliminate anything that takes energy away from this goal.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Number two, being honest with myself about my prices.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Number three, build my personal brand ecosystem.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Number four, stop eating my profits.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Number five, budget the entire business with clarity and rigor.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And number six, invest in those who invest in me.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Invest in those who are on Team Caitlin.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited to see how these all continue to nurture this big scary goal.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to see what other adjustments kind of come up and share with me what are your big 2026 goals?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: I think this is different than resolutions.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: It's not about necessarily cultivating habit, but like looking at like who do you want to be, who do you want to become?
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And and frankly, I want to be someone who values herself and pays herself well.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Cause it doesn't actually matter when it comes to the number.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: It matters about how I'm treating myself.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: It matters about me feeling the worthiness of however much I want to pay myself, right?
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: It matters about me not siphoning a bunch of my funds and resources away from myself, but rather filling my own cup and then using that full cup to help others.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: So, with that all being said, thank you for listening today.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Hit me up.
