Bold Steps with Dr. Mark Jobe - Don’t Get Pushed Out of Your Zone -- Part 1 · KCBI Teaching Channel

S1: Today on Bold steps, Mark Jobe teaches us how to
0:03
S1: stay in our spiritual zone.
0:06
S2: How many of you know life has a lot of bumps, circumstances,
0:10
S2: people that hit us tug at us, and they knock
0:13
S2: us out of that place of favor. But I've discovered
0:15
S2: over the years, listen, it is a battle to stay
0:18
S2: in the place that God wants us to stay in.
0:32
S1: Welcome to Bold Steps with Mark Jobe. Mark is founding
0:36
S1: pastor of New Life Community Church in Chicago. I'm Wayne Shepherd. Well,
0:40
S1: many of us have heard the phrase living in the
0:42
S1: favor of God. But what exactly does that mean? Well,
0:46
S1: today we're going to see a very powerful example of
0:48
S1: how God can work in our lives and be displayed
0:50
S1: in our lives when we focus on God's presence instead
0:53
S1: of our problems. But Mark, I'm going to be honest,
0:56
S1: that seems easier said than done.
0:57
S3: Sometimes it really is. And the life of Joseph is
1:04
S3: just the story that comes to my mind first. Mhm.
1:10
S3: A man with a calling on his life. But, you know,
1:13
S3: there's bumps and bruises and hurts and disappointments and betrayals
1:19
S3: that can really sour our spirit and take us out
1:22
S3: of that zone where God can really use us. And
1:25
S3: so we have to continue to get back into that
1:29
S3: zone of favor and humility before God. And so I'm
1:32
S3: going to talk to you today about how to stay
1:35
S3: in the zone.
1:35
S1: All right. If you're in a place where you can
1:37
S1: open your Bible, turn to Genesis chapter 39. We begin
1:40
S1: this new series today, Life interrupted. And to kick it off,
1:44
S1: here's Mark's message. Don't get pushed out of your zone.
1:49
S2: Anybody here ever been pushed by someone else that's cutting
1:51
S2: in line? Anybody here ever been, uh, kind of bumped
1:56
S2: out of your zone or place? Or you have a
2:00
S2: cup of coffee and someone bumps you and spills you.
2:02
S2: This happened to me in the office not too long ago.
2:04
S2: I filled a nice cup of coffee. Someone was coming
2:07
S2: through the hallway, bumped me, and spilled it all over.
2:10
S2: Life is full of bumps. And life is full of
2:15
S2: people that try to get us off our our railing
2:19
S2: off of our lane. I was in New York recently.
2:22
S2: I was speaking to a group of about a thousand
2:24
S2: men in Albany, New York, and I took my wife
2:27
S2: with me because she's my favorite traveling companion. So I
2:33
S2: made a resolution years ago that I would never travel alone.
2:36
S2: So when I go to speaking engagements, I always go
2:38
S2: with someone with me. And now that my kids are
2:42
S2: a little bit older, my wife is my first choice,
2:44
S2: and I always have a lot more fun when she's around.
2:48
S2: So we decided that we would head down to Albany
2:51
S2: about 2.5 hour from New York City. And so we
2:55
S2: figured after the men's conference that I would shoot over
2:58
S2: to New York City and just spend two days down
3:01
S2: in Manhattan enjoying the time there. But one of the
3:04
S2: days it rained really bad. I mean, it was pouring
3:08
S2: down rain. And so we went out of the hotel
3:11
S2: and we grabbed an umbrella. Uh, let me illustrate here
3:14
S2: with an umbrella. Thank you. And, um, I don't know
3:18
S2: if you've ever been downtown New York, but downtown New York.
3:21
S2: It's like crazy trying to walk in Manhattan. I mean,
3:25
S2: people think that people in Chicago have an attitude. New
3:30
S2: Yorkers have a ramped up attitude. I mean, they're aggressive.
3:34
S2: They're pushy. If anybody's listening from New York, we love you.
3:36
S2: But work on your attitude. They're very aggressive. They push
3:42
S2: they bump their you know, they they don't say, excuse you.
3:45
S2: That's just the way it is. And so we were
3:47
S2: walking downtown, super crowded. It was raining. And so we
3:51
S2: pulled out an umbrella. And, um, and by the way,
3:56
S2: the umbrella was a lot smaller than this one. And
3:59
S2: we were trying to Both of us fit under the umbrella.
4:03
S2: Now my wife. I know some of you ladies are
4:06
S2: like this. You don't want a drop of water to
4:08
S2: hit your hair because it messes up your hair, so
4:11
S2: don't get it. But she said, I don't want my
4:13
S2: hair to get wet. And so my wife is five foot.
4:16
S2: I'm six foot. So she was holding the umbrella and
4:21
S2: I'm under the umbrella, so I have to walk like this.
4:26
S2: Because she doesn't want to. Just a piece of her hair.
4:29
S2: I kept telling her, well, my eyebrows can get wet too,
4:32
S2: and it messes up my look if my eyebrows get wet.
4:34
S2: She wasn't taking it. And so we're walking down. I'm
4:38
S2: hunched over and I tell you, we are bumping into
4:41
S2: people in New York. Um, they are just a bunch
4:46
S2: of umbrellas coming out, people in a hurry. They're bumping us,
4:49
S2: and every time they bumped us. I seem to get
4:52
S2: knocked out of the umbrella. My wife wasn't, but I
4:56
S2: seem to get knocked out. My head's over. I'm walking
4:58
S2: like this with my wife, and I keep bumping into
5:01
S2: people and and they're aggressive. We're bumping into people. And
5:05
S2: I kept getting wet because I kept getting knocked out
5:09
S2: from under the umbrella. Now, I believe that there is
5:13
S2: a place of favor that a lot of you struggle
5:18
S2: to stay under. I believe there's a place of favor
5:22
S2: under God's umbrella that circumstances, people and problems tend to
5:28
S2: knock us out of. How many of you know? Life
5:31
S2: has a lot of bumps, circumstances. People that hit us
5:36
S2: tug at us, and they knock us out of that
5:38
S2: place of favor. But I've discovered over the years, listen,
5:41
S2: it is a battle to stay in the place that
5:43
S2: God wants us to stay in. And I believe that
5:46
S2: there are some people here that because of circumstances in life,
5:51
S2: because of family issues, marital issues, financial issues, hurts, disappointments,
5:58
S2: you've been knocked several times so that you are no
6:02
S2: longer in the place. Under the place you're no longer
6:06
S2: in the zone and you're walking outside of that zone.
6:10
S2: And so today, I want to talk to you about
6:11
S2: how to stay in God's zone, the favor zone. And
6:16
S2: I want you to take your Bibles and turn to
6:17
S2: Genesis chapter 39. And if you've read the story of Joseph,
6:23
S2: his story is a little bit like some of our stories.
6:28
S2: There's good news and then bad news, and then there's
6:32
S2: good news and bad news, good news followed by bad news.
6:38
S2: The good news is Joseph is born into a godly family, Jacob,
6:43
S2: and he's got a brother that he loves. The bad
6:45
S2: news is that he's got a bunch of brothers that
6:48
S2: don't like him very much. The good news is his
6:51
S2: father shows him a lot of favor. The bad news
6:54
S2: is his brothers are very jealous of that favor. The
6:57
S2: good news is his dad gives him a task to accomplish.
7:00
S2: The bad news is his brothers put his brothers, tie
7:03
S2: him up and sell him as a slave. The good
7:05
S2: news is he sold to a slave. That's very a
7:09
S2: house that has a lot of money and he prospers.
7:12
S2: The bad news is he ends up in jail again.
7:14
S2: How many of you can relate to Joseph's story? Life
7:18
S2: is full of good news, bad news, good news, bad news.
7:22
S2: And so I want to talk to you today about
7:25
S2: what it means to stay in that place even when
7:28
S2: bad news hits us. If you turn in your Bibles
7:32
S2: to Genesis chapter 39, we pick up the story right
7:38
S2: after Joseph has been sold by his brothers in a
7:42
S2: highly dysfunctional family to a group of traveling caravan of
7:49
S2: the Midianites. They sell them to this group. This group
7:52
S2: takes Joseph to Egypt and sells him as a slave
7:57
S2: to a house of a. Of a guy by the
7:59
S2: name of Potiphar, Who is the captain of the guard.
8:02
S2: A very high position in the Egyptian army. And so
8:06
S2: I'm starting to read in verse two it says, the
8:09
S2: Lord was with Joseph, so that he prospered, and he
8:14
S2: lived in the house with his Egyptian master. When his
8:17
S2: master saw that the Lord was with him, and that
8:20
S2: the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph
8:25
S2: found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar
8:31
S2: put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted
8:34
S2: to his care everything that he owned. If you're taking
8:38
S2: notes today, I want you to give you the first
8:40
S2: the first insight into staying in the place in the
8:45
S2: favor zone. Number one, if you're taking notes, write this down.
8:48
S2: Focus on the present instead of the problems, the people
8:53
S2: and the pressure. I look at Joseph and what you
9:00
S2: need to understand about Joseph's story is that when he
9:03
S2: was sold by his brothers into slavery, he was only
9:06
S2: about 17 years old, 17, 18 years old. He's taken
9:12
S2: to a land that he doesn't know. He doesn't know
9:15
S2: the Egyptian language. He's a slave treated like a piece
9:22
S2: of property. He's given the lowest job that he could have.
9:26
S2: He feels betrayed by his siblings in a foreign land
9:29
S2: that he doesn't understand. He can't get in touch with
9:33
S2: his family. He's lonely, hurt, betrayed at a very, very
9:40
S2: dark place in life. But there's one thing that he
9:43
S2: has going for him. Listen to this. It says in
9:46
S2: verse two, it says, but the Lord was with Joseph.
9:53
S2: There's something powerful when God is with us in spite
9:57
S2: of our bad circumstances. Here's the first thing that comes
10:02
S2: to my mind when I see this, by the way,
10:03
S2: and I want you to take note of this, even
10:06
S2: though you may be going through a difficult time right
10:08
S2: now that you don't understand, you're saying, why am I
10:11
S2: going through this? God, can I point this out to
10:14
S2: you that sometimes God will use negative circumstances as the
10:20
S2: transportation vehicle to the place of our calling? Yeah, yeah.
10:31
S2: Think about it. Joseph traveled to the place of his
10:36
S2: calling in the caravan as a slave. Joseph did not
10:42
S2: know that God was setting him up to be the liberator.
10:48
S2: God was setting him up to a high position. Years later,
10:52
S2: Joseph would rescue his family. Joseph would become the second
10:57
S2: in charge of Egypt. But in order to go to
11:00
S2: his calling, he had to go to Egypt. He had
11:03
S2: to learn the language, but he didn't know it at
11:05
S2: the time that this slavery that he was sold into
11:09
S2: was the transportation vehicle to Egypt, where he would become
11:13
S2: the most powerful man in Egypt. He didn't understand that
11:17
S2: God would use bad circumstances to lead him to his calling.
11:21
S2: Can I tell you something? Some of you are right
11:23
S2: now are in bad circumstances, and you don't understand why
11:27
S2: you're in these circumstances. But it may very well be
11:31
S2: that your circumstances right now that you don't understand, that
11:35
S2: you hate, that you're discouraged about that it may be
11:38
S2: your circumstances that are taking you to your place of calling.
11:44
S2: You are trying to get into that one college and
11:48
S2: your GPA was just one point off and they said
11:51
S2: no to you. You're devastated at home eating a whole
11:56
S2: pie by yourself. But what you don't know is that God. Well,
12:02
S2: God has another college in mind. And that you're going
12:05
S2: to meet your future husband at that college. And so
12:08
S2: God had to cause you to deny that one college,
12:11
S2: to take you to another college to set it up
12:13
S2: so you could meet the guy that you're going to
12:15
S2: spend the rest of your life and your story is
12:18
S2: going to be, thank God I didn't get into college.
12:20
S2: I applied for because God had a bigger, better purpose
12:24
S2: for me. What strikes me about this, though, is that
12:30
S2: many of us, when we're in the middle of the
12:32
S2: bad news story, it's easy for us to develop a
12:35
S2: bad attitude when life and circumstances seem to have been
12:40
S2: bad to us because we don't see the end of
12:44
S2: the story. There's no indication in Scripture that Joseph got
12:48
S2: bitter or resentful or angry. Now, he may have struggled
12:53
S2: through these emotions, but there's no indication that he gave
12:57
S2: up on God, that he lost his faith, that he
13:00
S2: raised his fist to God. There's no indication, it seems,
13:04
S2: like Joseph, even in the midst of this, he did
13:07
S2: not allow bitterness to invade his heart and soul. Because
13:10
S2: let me tell you something about bitterness. When life has
13:13
S2: been unjust, many of us get hurt by life, get
13:17
S2: hurt by circumstances, and our default mode is bitterness, resentment,
13:23
S2: and anger.
13:30
S1: Well, that is a very convicting note to hit the
13:32
S1: pause button on, but we will return to the message
13:34
S1: in just a moment from Mark Jobe here on Bold Steps.
13:37
S1: In the meantime, we want to thank our bold partners, Mark.
13:40
S1: These are listeners who give a monthly gift. And frankly,
13:43
S1: this is what makes this program go.
13:45
S3: It really does. And again, I want to just say
13:48
S3: once again, thank you, Bold Partners, for coming alongside us.
13:53
S3: You really are a part of this team. And some
13:57
S3: of you may be saying, hey, I want to join
13:58
S3: that team as well. Well, it's fairly simple to join
14:01
S3: the team. We'll let you know how to do that.
14:04
S3: But really your commitment is to say I'm going to
14:06
S3: give monthly whatever you decide to give monthly. But it
14:10
S3: really helps us plan, budget, grow and reach people like
14:15
S3: this person from Malawi. Wayne reads the letter.
14:19
S1: You tell me specifically where he's from. Don't throw it
14:22
S1: to me. I want to hear you pronounce this one.
14:24
S3: So I believe this listener is from Kaira Zulu place.
14:28
S3: I may be butchering that name, but.
14:30
S1: I believe you. Here's a side note. When we get
14:33
S1: listener letters like this, we like to look them up
14:35
S1: on the map, don't we? So we do. We're looking
14:37
S1: at a map of Malawi. But here's what this dear
14:39
S1: listener says. You are really mentoring us here with the
14:43
S1: right message of Jesus Christ, who is at the right
14:45
S1: hand of God in heaven. Before, I was one of
14:48
S1: those people who used to shun the Christian message. But
14:51
S1: now I do love it. I just cannot believe that
14:54
S1: this is happening to me today. One thing I know
14:57
S1: there is God in heaven and he's done this to
14:59
S1: my life. I thank you people for coming up with
15:02
S1: the message of Jesus.
15:04
S3: Are.
15:04
S1: Precious.
15:05
S3: That's great. It just warms my heart. It encourages me
15:08
S3: so much. It reminds me that there's a lot of
15:11
S3: people around the world that haven't clearly heard the message
15:16
S3: and person of Jesus Christ. So thank you, bold partners.
15:19
S3: Thank you. Thank you for helping us take the message
15:22
S3: of Jesus to people like this, uh, person who's responding
15:27
S3: from Malawi, Africa.
15:28
S1: Perhaps you've already given to bold steps, but maybe you'd
15:31
S1: like to step up and make it a monthly gift.
15:33
S1: We'd love to hear from you. We'd love to make
15:35
S1: you a bold partner with this ministry. You can do
15:37
S1: that by going to Bold steps.org. You choose the amount.
15:40
S1: We would be very grateful for whatever you give, become
15:43
S1: a bold partner at bold steps.org. All right, back to
15:46
S1: this important message today titled don't get pushed out of
15:49
S1: Your Zone. Here again is Mark.
15:56
S2: Listen, what it tells us in Ephesians chapter four, verse
16:00
S2: 30 and 31, it says, do not grieve the Holy
16:05
S2: Spirit of God, with whom you have been sealed for
16:09
S2: the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling,
16:16
S2: slander along with every form of malice. What he's telling
16:22
S2: us is, if you're a believer here today, you have
16:25
S2: the Holy Spirit of God inside of you. But when
16:29
S2: you allow resentment or anger, bitterness because of life's circumstances,
16:34
S2: you grieve the Holy Spirit. And when you grieve the
16:38
S2: Holy Spirit, you grieve. There's no more miserable place to
16:44
S2: be than a Christian who's not walking right with God.
16:49
S2: Because part of the fruit of the spirit is joy.
16:51
S2: But when the Holy Spirit is grieved inside of you,
16:54
S2: when he grieves, you can't be joyful. You lose your
16:56
S2: joy too. And some of you are believers, but you're
17:00
S2: walking joyless, not because God isn't giving you joy, but
17:03
S2: because you're not walking in the spirit. You've allowed bitterness
17:06
S2: or resentment or anger to fill your heart, and so
17:09
S2: your joy has evaporated. It feels like Joseph, even in
17:15
S2: the midst of this. The Bible says that the presence
17:19
S2: of God was with Joseph even in his bad circumstances.
17:24
S2: T s Randall says, bitterness is this the atmosphere produced
17:29
S2: in us internally when we meditate over life's circumstances and
17:34
S2: decide that we have not been given a fair deal?
17:40
S2: How many of you know that life isn't fair? If
17:44
S2: you expect life to be fair in order to be happy,
17:48
S2: then you will live unhappy. Life isn't fair. People don't
17:54
S2: get treated the way they should. Bigotry exists. Racism exists,
18:00
S2: prejudice exists. Some people get sick when other people don't.
18:06
S2: Some people lose their jobs when other people don't. Some
18:09
S2: people get bypassed in favor of others. Some parents show
18:13
S2: favoritism to one child instead of another. Some people aren't
18:16
S2: treated the same way as other people should be treated.
18:19
S2: Some people are lied against. Sometimes you get cut and
18:23
S2: you're the harder worker because someone has it in with
18:25
S2: the boss. Sometimes you get cheated on by a spouse
18:30
S2: and then they leave and blame it all on you.
18:32
S2: Your bad attitude and walk away. Life is not fair,
18:38
S2: but God is still present in the midst of the unfairness.
18:43
S2: God is still the one that accompanies you through the
18:45
S2: valley of unfairness. Now, what I've noticed in life is
18:54
S2: I've noticed that it's very easy for us in the
19:00
S2: middle of life to when it's unfair. It's very easy
19:04
S2: for us to get knocked out of favor and to
19:05
S2: begin to get some bitterness in our life. But I
19:07
S2: want you to notice. I want you to notice what
19:10
S2: happens to Joseph as he's in Potiphar's house. In verse five,
19:14
S2: it says that the Lord was. It says that the
19:17
S2: Lord was with them, and because God was with them,
19:21
S2: even in his bad circumstances, he felt the favor of God.
19:27
S2: He was a slave, but God was still with him.
19:34
S2: You may be going through a difficult circumstance stance in
19:37
S2: life right now, and just because you're a Christian doesn't
19:41
S2: eliminate your bad circumstance. But what you can be sure
19:46
S2: of is that the presence of God, if you allow
19:48
S2: it to be, will travel with you in the middle
19:51
S2: of that bad circumstance. And listen to me here. You
19:58
S2: want the presence of God. Because even when your circumstances
20:02
S2: is bad, when you have the presence of God, the
20:04
S2: atmosphere changes. Something is different when you have the presence
20:09
S2: of God even through the valley, when God is present.
20:13
S2: Something is different. Notice what happens here in verse five.
20:17
S2: It says. It says that Joseph, he, he prospered and
20:25
S2: he lived in the house. Verse two, it says, he
20:26
S2: prospered as he lived in the house of the Egyptian master.
20:29
S2: And when the master saw that the Lord was with him,
20:33
S2: and that the Lord had given him success in everything
20:36
S2: he did, Joseph found favor, and he became the attendant.
20:41
S2: When God was with Joseph, even in the midst of
20:44
S2: his bad circumstances, people around him could tell that God
20:48
S2: was with him. Potiphar, this powerful leader of the guard,
20:54
S2: noticed that there was something different about Joseph. And I
20:59
S2: want you to notice this about what Joseph did. And
21:02
S2: it's a powerful indication of the presence of God. When
21:05
S2: God is with you, I believe that as a believer,
21:09
S2: the presence you carry, the presence of God wherever you go. Hello.
21:15
S2: You say, pastor, you don't know the workplace that I
21:18
S2: live in, that I work in. Man, it is godless.
21:21
S2: They swear. They cheat. They. As soon as you walk
21:24
S2: into that place, you have just bought the. Brought the
21:27
S2: presence of God into that place. You say, I can't
21:31
S2: wait to come to church because I feel the presence
21:34
S2: of God. Guess what? If you're filled with the spirit,
21:36
S2: you take the presence of God wherever you go. The
21:40
S2: Bible says that Joseph, because God was with him. That
21:46
S2: Potiphar put him in charge of his household and all
21:50
S2: that he owned. And the Lord blessed the household of
21:53
S2: the Egyptian. Why? Because of Joseph. The blessing of the
22:00
S2: Lord was on everything that Potiphar had, both in his
22:03
S2: house and his and in his field. Here's what I
22:07
S2: want you to know. If you are a believer of
22:10
S2: Jesus the Christ and he fills you, you carry the
22:14
S2: presence of God wherever you go. And with the presence
22:17
S2: of God comes a sense of God's favor. God will
22:21
S2: look at a city, and God will withhold punishment upon
22:25
S2: an entire city because there's 2 or 3 believers living there.
22:31
S2: God will look at a people, and because you're there,
22:35
S2: God will bless a people, a school, a business, a
22:38
S2: place because one of his Josephs are there. That's the
22:44
S2: hand of God. That's the blessing that the people of
22:46
S2: God bring wherever they go.
22:58
S1: Are you bringing that kind of blessing to others in
23:01
S1: your life? We'll continue learning about how to be a
23:03
S1: Joseph and the places we live when we return. For
23:06
S1: part two of this lesson titled Don't Get Pushed Out
23:08
S1: of Your Zone. And that's tomorrow here on Bold Steps
23:11
S1: with Mark Jobe. But before then, be sure to go
23:14
S1: to our website, Bold steps.org, and take advantage of the
23:17
S1: unique opportunities and resources we've made available, like our special
23:21
S1: Bold Step gift. You know, Mark, when the culture pushes
23:24
S1: against our faith, there are usually two temptations. One is
23:27
S1: to blend in and get quiet. The other is to
23:30
S1: pull back and hide away from the world altogether. But
23:32
S1: Scripture seems to call us to something different. And that's
23:35
S1: where this bold step gift comes in. The Church in
23:37
S1: Babylon by Erwin Lutzer. What does it look like practically,
23:40
S1: for a believer to shine the light right where they
23:42
S1: are in this culture?
23:44
S2: You know, Erwin Lutzer points to Daniel in Babylon, and
23:49
S2: it's a compelling, incredible story. How Daniel, he's not feisty, combative,
23:57
S2: but he's Courageous and brave. True. And when everybody else
24:01
S2: bows down, he stands up. And when everybody else is
24:05
S2: told to eat a certain way, he says, no, I'm going.
24:07
S2: To follow my values. And it's a great example of courage.
24:13
S2: And he actually ends up gaining the respect of leaders
24:16
S2: and ultimately influencing a nation because he refuses to compromise.
24:21
S1: That's a good lesson for us.
24:22
S2: It really is one. So I'm going to encourage you
24:26
S2: to take heed to what Erwin Lutzer, the book he's written,
24:31
S2: The Church in Babylon, because he encourages us not to
24:33
S2: be silent, not to compromise, to be bold, but also
24:38
S2: gracious in the stance that we take not to silence
24:42
S2: our voice, not to hide, but to be salt and
24:46
S2: light in the generation that's around us. There's some practical
24:49
S2: advice about how to do that. Well.
