• 0:26
Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real Experience,
• 0:30
Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Curly with Let's Talk
• 0:40
Speaker 2: and I have my co host Lisa Odie with me today. Hello,
• 0:47
Speaker 2: Hollis Lewis could not make it.
• 0:49
  Speaker 4: Yes, fine solo.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: How have you? How have you dealt with the snow
• 0:55
  Speaker 2: and the cone?
• 0:56
Speaker 5: Just like everybody else, I've hunkered down eight lots of carbs,
• 1:00
Speaker 5: watch lots of Netflix series that I wanted to catch
• 1:03
Speaker 5: up on, and just just you know, did the just
• 1:06
Speaker 5: did the prayers that the power didn't go out? That
• 1:08
Speaker 5: was our biggest worry during the ice storm.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, that was I think that was pretty much probably everybody.
• 1:13
Speaker 2: So I didn't care like how much of anything we
• 1:16
Speaker 2: got right, just you know, please don't let the power
• 1:20
Speaker 2: no right, you have.
• 1:21
Speaker 4: To pray, pray to the power Gouds.
• 1:22
Speaker 5: Every time it flickered, we would just like go, both
• 1:25
Speaker 5: of us would just look at each other, and then
• 1:26
Speaker 5: it came back on.
• 1:27
Speaker 4: So we were we were blessed that.
• 1:29
Speaker 2: We were pretty fortunate too. Yeah, we didn't have we
• 1:31
Speaker 2: didn't really have any flickers or anything like that, like
• 1:34
Speaker 2: the oh wow, really not any time that we were
• 1:38
Speaker 2: worried about, you know, any kind of electricity or anything.
• 1:42
Speaker 2: But man, that when that rain came and the temperature dropped,
• 1:47
Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever seen my driveway with that
• 1:50
  Speaker 2: much ice.
• 1:51
Speaker 5: And still still there's ice everywhere. I mean, we're what
• 1:54
Speaker 5: four days out and then we're still dealing still. Oh well,
• 1:58
Speaker 5: let's hope it gets better spring spring come.
• 2:01
Speaker 2: For sure for sure. Well, Lisa, we don't have our
• 2:06
Speaker 2: other co host, Hollis Lewis. He was unable to make
• 2:08
Speaker 2: it today. But you know, there's always been a conversation
• 2:15
Speaker 2: around parents and their kids, right, you know, there's always
• 2:22
Speaker 2: been this this this thing about dads coaching their sons
• 2:26
Speaker 2: and all of them.
• 2:28
  Speaker 4: I know where you're going.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: All of those things have always been like and I
• 2:35
Speaker 2: think for the most part, everybody that's been in that
• 2:39
Speaker 2: situation never wants to be that dad. Okay, and some
• 2:45
Speaker 2: work really hard not to be. They're harder on their
• 2:47
Speaker 2: son than they might be on anybody else, and hats
• 2:50
Speaker 2: off to them for that. And then there's the other
• 2:52
Speaker 2: ones who are pushing their kids regardless of how good
• 2:57
Speaker 2: or great they are. They expect them to be.
• 3:01
Speaker 6: Greater than top of the class, at the top of
• 3:04
Speaker 6: the class, right right.
• 3:06
  Speaker 2: But I think I don't know if I can ever
• 3:09
Speaker 2: remember any any notable individuals as notable.
• 3:17
  Speaker 4: Until now has.
• 3:21
Speaker 2: As Dion Standers and his son Shudor.
• 3:24
Speaker 5: He's very happy right now. According to social media. Did
• 3:29
  Speaker 5: you see him?
• 3:29
Speaker 2: I did not see that.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: He put it out there in all caps, in all
• 3:33
Speaker 5: caps referring to his sons should door and I think
• 3:36
Speaker 5: we're referring to the fact that he is going to
• 3:38
Speaker 5: be playing in the Pro Bowl, right the flagged football
• 3:41
Speaker 5: Pro Bowl. Okay, I know I had to say that,
• 3:45
Speaker 5: but he put in all caps out there on social media.
• 3:48
Speaker 4: I don't know if it was X or could have been.
• 3:50
Speaker 5: But if he said God is good, so good in
• 3:53
Speaker 5: all caps because his son will be starting for the
• 3:57
Speaker 5: AFC in the Pro Bowl games plural, It's not just
• 4:03
Speaker 5: the Pro Bowl, now, you know that, right, yeah, okay,
• 4:07
Speaker 5: making sure our audience need that as well.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: But okay, and again let me let me let me
• 4:13
Speaker 2: clarify to your points.
• 4:15
Speaker 5: Please do somebody needs to.
• 4:20
Speaker 2: Or me for me, as a guy who who's been
• 4:25
Speaker 2: extremely blessed to have had been selected to a Pro Bowl,
• 4:31
Speaker 2: sure to go to three mm hmmm and look across
• 4:38
Speaker 2: the field and look at the best players in the league, Yes,
• 4:43
Speaker 2: of the a f C, look left and right of
• 4:46
Speaker 2: the best players you know in the n f C.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: And and and realizing that I'm in this line, You're
• 4:56
Speaker 2: in this club. I'm in this club. And to say
• 5:02
Speaker 2: that Chadore is now officially quote in that class bothers me.
• 5:12
Speaker 4: Okay, I'm glad you started with that statement.
• 5:15
Speaker 5: That was going to be a question for you, of course,
• 5:17
Speaker 5: because we know how he landed in this position, and
• 5:21
Speaker 5: it wasn't he wasn't first choice by far. He can
• 5:24
Speaker 5: go down a long list of names that were probably
• 5:27
Speaker 5: explored before they got to him.
• 5:31
  Speaker 4: His stats.
• 5:33
Speaker 5: I'm not gonna can I throw a few out there
• 5:35
Speaker 5: because we're giving Shador pro bowler status now he will
• 5:40
Speaker 5: play in this game and he will be considered an
• 5:42
  Speaker 5: All Pro.
• 5:42
Speaker 2: Like you, yes, like you?
• 5:43
Speaker 5: Okay, So when I was looking at some of his
• 5:45
Speaker 5: stats from this past year when he played for the Browns,
• 5:49
Speaker 5: he was thirty fifth in the league in passing yards.
• 5:52
Speaker 5: He was forty second in completions, forty first in his
• 5:57
Speaker 5: passing rating. Okay, okay, I'm just gonna lay that out
• 6:02
Speaker 5: there and leave it there for you, just just kind
• 6:04
Speaker 5: of to absorb it and digest it in all those things.
• 6:07
Speaker 5: But we know, and surely Dad knows, and surely Chadour
• 6:12
Speaker 5: knows that this is kind of going to have a
• 6:16
Speaker 5: hashtag this year, beside him being named a Pro Bowler,
• 6:20
Speaker 5: because we know injuries took out some of the better
• 6:24
Speaker 5: quarterbacks that would have been selected for the AFC. I mean, still,
• 6:27
Speaker 5: Patrick Mahomes could have been selected, you know, Josh Allen
• 6:31
Speaker 5: could have been another one. Right, Boonicks, even from Denver
• 6:36
Speaker 5: probably would have been justified, right, yes, yes, yes, okay,
• 6:41
Speaker 5: So let me let me let me just finish my
• 6:43
Speaker 5: thought here. So is it is it that the game
• 6:48
Speaker 5: and its honor has has become so diminished that we're
• 6:54
Speaker 5: taking shador as the starting quarterback for the AFC?
• 6:57
Speaker 4: Or is it marketability because of who he is and
• 7:00
  Speaker 4: his dad.
• 7:02
Speaker 2: I'm going to probably say both, okay, because when when
• 7:12
Speaker 2: when when I when I think Pro Bowl, okay, I'm
• 7:14
Speaker 2: thinking the best players at their position. Sure, so let's
• 7:20
Speaker 2: you know, you run through the quarterbacks and we all
• 7:22
Speaker 2: know the names of all the top quarterbacks. Now some
• 7:26
Speaker 2: of those guys, most of those guys even will probably
• 7:30
Speaker 2: not be interested in playing for for whatever, for the
• 7:34
Speaker 2: for the the lack of you want to be selected,
• 7:39
Speaker 2: but you don't want to play, you know, for in
• 7:42
Speaker 2: most cases, most players want to be selected, but they
• 7:46
Speaker 2: don't want to play. They don't want they don't want
• 7:48
Speaker 2: to risk of injuries and all of those kinds of things.
• 7:52
Speaker 2: And and maybe to where they're trying to take it
• 7:55
Speaker 2: because which I think is crazy. But you know, it
• 7:58
Speaker 2: should be just the game, just the game. But what
• 8:02
Speaker 2: bothers me in Chador's situation is and again I can
• 8:10
Speaker 2: understand his dad's excitement about it. Sure you know that
• 8:15
Speaker 2: that's natural. But I think also I would like to
• 8:23
Speaker 2: think that Dion would also understand though, that this is
• 8:28
Speaker 2: not this is not a He would not have been
• 8:35
Speaker 2: satisfied by being a selected pick. Well beyond, because of
• 8:42
Speaker 2: all the players who can't, all the quarters, all the
• 8:44
Speaker 2: dbs who didn't want to play, and he all of
• 8:46
Speaker 2: a sudden stepped in. I don't think he would have
• 8:49
Speaker 2: wanted that. I think he would have only wanted to
• 8:53
Speaker 2: be in that game if he was the top player,
• 8:58
Speaker 2: if he earned it, if he was a top player
• 9:00
  Speaker 2: in the league.
• 9:01
Speaker 5: So I'm gonna throw this question at you, then, Carl,
• 9:04
  Speaker 5: same what.
• 9:05
  Speaker 4: You just said.
• 9:06
Speaker 5: Should he maybe have declined the invitation to you know that?
• 9:11
Speaker 4: I mean Trevor, Trevor Lawrence.
• 9:13
Speaker 5: Declined, he didn't think twice about it. So why do
• 9:16
Speaker 5: you think Shador felt like it was okay to accept?
• 9:21
Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how you turn it down, Lawrence. Well,
• 9:25
Speaker 2: but but but again, he just declined it.
• 9:28
Speaker 4: He didn't even have an injury. He just said, no,
• 9:30
Speaker 4: I'm not doing it.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: And again, I think where the Pro Bowl is as
• 9:34
Speaker 2: a status of a game now, I think players who
• 9:38
Speaker 2: are legitimate players are not interested in They don't need
• 9:42
Speaker 2: that to add on to their career.
• 9:45
Speaker 4: Okay, it's not the honor like it used to be.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: I totally do not believe it's it's nice to say
• 9:52
  Speaker 2: I'm a pro bowler, I'm an All pro. That's that
• 9:56
Speaker 2: gives you clout the game itself, not now, the game
• 10:02
Speaker 2: itself today does not do anything for you. So if
• 10:09
Speaker 2: you if you are Shador and you have a Pro
• 10:13
Speaker 2: Bowl honor on your resume, it sticks there and it
• 10:20
Speaker 2: stays there and people are thinking, you know, when your
• 10:26
Speaker 2: career is over, you're like, oh, he made a Pro Bowl.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: He must have been one of the best quarterbacks. Like
• 10:32
  Speaker 2: the league.
• 10:33
Speaker 5: Football Pro Bowl, it's a little different. And I understand
• 10:37
Speaker 5: the reason. I understand why the league had to kind
• 10:40
  Speaker 5: of I.
• 10:43
  Speaker 4: Don't.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: I don't, and you know what I would.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: I think it was to get players to participate, like because,
• 10:47
Speaker 5: like you said, a lot of them decline it because
• 10:49
Speaker 5: they don't want to take the risk of getting hurt.
• 10:51
Speaker 5: And if it's flag football, I'm not.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: I'm not coming. I don't want to make an NF
• 10:58
Speaker 2: I don't want to have an NFL award. Okay, hear me,
• 11:01
Speaker 2: I don't want an NFL award. That is saying to me,
• 11:06
Speaker 2: I am one of the best corners in the league
• 11:09
Speaker 2: and then and then you're gonna fly me somewhere to
• 11:13
Speaker 2: go play flag football. That's not what I do.
• 11:18
Speaker 5: And I wish the audience could see the look on
• 11:20
Speaker 5: your face when you said flag football. I mean that
• 11:22
Speaker 5: would be amazing if they could see it, you're not impressed. No,
• 11:29
  Speaker 5: I mean it's not interested in. I mean, I know
• 11:31
Speaker 5: flag football is, it's a big thing. I mean it's coming,
• 11:35
Speaker 5: it's up and coming. I know that the women have
• 11:36
Speaker 5: their own league, right, some of the women and.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: And and I love it. That's fine, that's fine, But
• 11:41
Speaker 2: not for NFL, not for NFL football, because it's not
• 11:45
  Speaker 2: because you're you're you're you're creating a all star game
• 11:50
  Speaker 2: over with something that I don't do. I don't play
• 11:54
Speaker 2: flag football. I play football. Right, If you want to
• 11:57
Speaker 2: give me the honor of a Pro Bowl player, then
• 12:00
Speaker 2: either let me play football or let's just do like
• 12:03
Speaker 2: how we do here in the state. You have all state.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: You just announce the names. There is gonna be done
• 12:08
Speaker 2: with it, to be done with it.
• 12:09
  Speaker 4: That's a good point.
• 12:11
Speaker 2: Why are you trying to play? Why don't you? Why
• 12:13
Speaker 2: don't you just if you're gonna just select them. Yeah,
• 12:15
Speaker 2: it's about the money. Everything is about the money.
• 12:19
Speaker 4: They I mean, how much money could they possibly make
• 12:21
  Speaker 4: on this?
• 12:21
  Speaker 5: I mean, I know it's got It's on Tuesday. See
• 12:25
Speaker 5: it's Tuesday, February third. Is that a typical day of
• 12:28
Speaker 5: the week that they do it. I thought they did
• 12:29
  Speaker 5: it late.
• 12:30
Speaker 2: I thought I would have assumed it would have been
• 12:32
  Speaker 2: a weekend. Well that's what I thought too, But I
• 12:35
Speaker 2: would think if you do it on the weekend, you're
• 12:37
Speaker 2: probably not gonna make any money because people are gonna
• 12:40
Speaker 2: watch other sports. Yeah, you're competing, and you're competing with everything. Yeah,
• 12:44
Speaker 2: so let's do it on a weekday, which makes no
• 12:48
Speaker 2: sense for a quote all star game. But you got
• 12:52
Speaker 2: but you gotta you gotta try to fit in and
• 12:55
Speaker 2: get whatever audience that you can get. And I'm just
• 12:59
Speaker 2: telling you, and and again, even if I had not
• 13:03
Speaker 2: been a Pro Bowl player, there's zero chances that I
• 13:08
Speaker 2: would think this is okay.
• 13:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, that was going to be.
• 13:12
Speaker 5: Like I wanted to know what you thought about having
• 13:15
Speaker 5: a guy that had like six people that they asked
• 13:18
Speaker 5: in front of him, or six at least six quarterbacks
• 13:22
Speaker 5: either because of injury, couldn't participate, or they just flat
• 13:25
Speaker 5: out said no, I'm not doing it.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: And okay. And so if you get him, he's the
• 13:32
Speaker 2: most notable player that you can get that you think
• 13:36
Speaker 2: can draw attention to the game.
• 13:38
Speaker 5: I think there are other quarterbacks that are more deserving
• 13:40
Speaker 5: that probably would have said, yes, there had there had
• 13:44
  Speaker 5: to be.
• 13:44
Speaker 4: I mean, in my mind there there's got to.
• 13:46
Speaker 2: Be even to that degree. Let's say anybody who was
• 13:50
Speaker 2: a backup quarterback who has had history of being a
• 13:55
Speaker 2: good player could be there even before.
• 14:00
Speaker 5: A rookie a rookie And you take offense that it's
• 14:03
Speaker 5: a rookie because that's not typical, right.
• 14:05
Speaker 2: It's not a lot of rookies who you got to
• 14:09
Speaker 2: be beyond yes, to go as a rookie as a quarterback.
• 14:13
Speaker 2: And I wish I would have looked this up, but yeah,
• 14:16
Speaker 2: I don't think you never had a rookie quarterback in
• 14:21
Speaker 2: any award. It's just just it's just too hard. And
• 14:26
Speaker 2: and is it is it because and it is all
• 14:32
Speaker 2: this because he's Dion's son or is this just he's
• 14:38
Speaker 2: the guy that that's there? And see, to me, I
• 14:40
Speaker 2: feel like it's Beyond's son. Yeah.
• 14:43
Speaker 5: I think it goes back to the question I asked you,
• 14:44
Speaker 5: Is it about the market marketability of him or is
• 14:47
Speaker 5: it talent? Well, the stats tell you tell you which
• 14:51
Speaker 5: one it is, right, Yes, basically, I mean numbers don't lie.
• 14:56
Speaker 4: We've said that before on the show.
• 14:58
Speaker 2: You know what else? You know, what else is me
• 15:01
Speaker 2: knowing how the game is actually played, right, he could
• 15:05
Speaker 2: do it. He could do extremely well in that game
• 15:10
Speaker 2: because it's because of the way it has become.
• 15:14
Speaker 5: And so that's maybe why they chose him, because they know.
• 15:18
  Speaker 4: I don't think that's.
• 15:19
Speaker 2: Why they chose him. I think that he can he
• 15:22
  Speaker 2: can fit.
• 15:23
Speaker 5: And so he'll pick up that part of the game
• 15:26
  Speaker 5: pretty easily.
• 15:27
Speaker 2: He may even he may score. He may scramble and
• 15:30
Speaker 2: go score touchdown or a couple or throw one and
• 15:33
Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. And it's gonna look good
• 15:36
Speaker 2: because because it's the Pro Bowl and quote, it's the
• 15:40
Speaker 2: best players in the league. But on the other side
• 15:45
Speaker 2: of that, you I know, I know that in my
• 15:53
Speaker 2: era of Pro Bowl opportunity from nineteen eighty three to
• 16:00
Speaker 2: nineteen ninety four, he's not making not one of them,
• 16:03
Speaker 2: not as a substitute, not as anything.
• 16:07
Speaker 5: I'm in total agreement with you on this whole topic,
• 16:10
Speaker 5: Like it blew my mind. But then I started, you know,
• 16:13
Speaker 5: looking at some of the news media outlets and what
• 16:17
Speaker 5: they were saying about how he got there, and it
• 16:20
Speaker 5: was a combination of your better players were either injured
• 16:24
Speaker 5: or they said no thanks. I think the next in
• 16:26
Speaker 5: line after my homes and Knicks. I'm sorry, Josh Allen,
• 16:31
Speaker 5: Justin Herbert was Drake may Well. Of course they're going
• 16:35
Speaker 5: to the Super Bowl, so he's ineligible. And I don't
• 16:38
Speaker 5: even think he would have played in it even if
• 16:40
Speaker 5: he you know, they'd lost that game.
• 16:41
Speaker 2: What do you think, I mean, he's not a rookie though,
• 16:45
  Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think so.
• 16:48
  Speaker 5: I know he's new, he's young, and he hasn't been
• 16:51
  Speaker 5: playing long.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: But I think you'd have to go to every quarterback,
• 16:59
Speaker 2: any vet in quarterback, And they said, if you've gone
• 17:03
Speaker 2: to every you'd have to go to me. I'm thinking
• 17:06
Speaker 2: they should go to should have gone to every starting quarterback, judge, Yes,
• 17:13
Speaker 2: any one of those kinds of quarterbacks you could have
• 17:16
Speaker 2: gone to and asked them first, there's Shador is not
• 17:22
Speaker 2: ahead of any veteran quarterback in the league. He's just not.
• 17:29
Speaker 5: So it has to be the fact that they feel,
• 17:32
Speaker 5: like what you just said, that he fits the mold
• 17:35
Speaker 5: for this type of Pro Bowl, so to speak, flag football,
• 17:39
  Speaker 5: this event.
• 17:43
Speaker 2: I don't necessarily want to call it, you know, football
• 17:45
Speaker 2: or a game, but it an event.
• 17:48
Speaker 5: Well, so I'm guessing you're not going to tune in
• 17:51
Speaker 5: on Tuesday, February third, check it out.
• 17:54
Speaker 2: And no, I'm not No, I'm not at all. I
• 17:59
Speaker 2: am and I can be a good one though. I'm
• 18:02
Speaker 2: good at it. You know, I have you know, and
• 18:06
Speaker 2: and unfortunately Coop let me have a mic so I
• 18:10
  Speaker 2: can hate even.
• 18:11
Speaker 5: More dangerous territory we're entering here. Oh no, okay, all right,
• 18:19
Speaker 5: Well I'll watch for Bath of Us.
• 18:21
  Speaker 4: How's that?
• 18:21
Speaker 5: And I'll fill you in because I know you'll be
• 18:23
Speaker 5: dying to know all the stats and how he how
• 18:26
  Speaker 5: he fared.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: You know what he's gonna He's gonna fare good.
• 18:30
Speaker 4: And that's gonna Yeah.
• 18:32
Speaker 2: He's gonna fare good. He's going to do I think
• 18:35
Speaker 2: he will do well. I'm not saying he doesn't have talent.
• 18:39
Speaker 2: That that's not That's not what I'm trying to say.
• 18:43
Speaker 2: But there is a there is a class that to me,
• 18:47
Speaker 2: I would like to think that I was privileged to
• 18:50
Speaker 2: be in. Right, you earned and I earned it. Right
• 18:55
Speaker 2: and and whether and again you could work. I could
• 18:58
Speaker 2: have worked as hard as I want wanted and never
• 19:01
Speaker 2: made a pro bowl. I would have never said that.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: I think I think that I was worthy of it.
• 19:08
Speaker 2: But I worked hard enough got selected, and so I
• 19:13
Speaker 2: know I worked hard enough and I got it, and
• 19:15
Speaker 2: I was there as a starter. So I started in
• 19:18
Speaker 2: all three of my Pro Bowls. And when when when
• 19:22
  Speaker 2: I look at a situation like this, here's a guy
• 19:26
Speaker 2: who whose stats do not even come close to a
• 19:32
Speaker 2: Pro Bowl quarterbacks stats. Right, if all these guys, all
• 19:39
Speaker 2: these guys turned down that job or that opportunity, the
• 19:46
Speaker 2: question we should be asking ourselves is what's going on?
• 19:50
Speaker 2: What are they? What are they? What are these players lacking?
• 19:54
Speaker 2: Or why are they turning it down?
• 19:57
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I think the question that's a legitimate question,
• 20:00
Speaker 5: and I think you've already answered it. It's the fact
• 20:02
  Speaker 5: that they've they've they've downgraded it, they've made it a
• 20:05
  Speaker 5: flag fit. It's almost like a it's a watered down
• 20:09
Speaker 5: version of what you played in. Right, and and and people,
• 20:13
Speaker 5: the Pro Bowl was a hard sell anyway, We know that, right,
• 20:16
Speaker 5: I mean, I'll give you that right to get an audience, yes,
• 20:19
Speaker 5: But but now that they've even taken it down another level,
• 20:23
Speaker 5: it's super hard. And so I think now they're struggling
• 20:27
Speaker 5: maybe putting that you know, Shador Sanders name out there
• 20:31
Speaker 5: to kind of get audience. You know, kind of get
• 20:33
  Speaker 5: that viewership up.
• 20:34
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 20:35
Speaker 2: But and yeah, and that's and that's probably that's probably
• 20:40
Speaker 2: a fact there that you that you make but you can't.
• 20:47
Speaker 2: But but you're crazy to think that he's the guy
• 20:51
Speaker 2: who is going to make that happen. Yeah, and again
• 20:55
Speaker 2: and I get it. You think Dion's coming with that package? Okay?
• 20:58
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 21:00
  Speaker 2: Is that the.
• 21:01
Speaker 5: Camera in the audience and there's proud Dad sitting there?
• 21:05
Speaker 2: Is that enough to draw Let me ask you this question.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: Is that enough to draw you to the game?
• 21:12
Speaker 5: No, it never it's not enough to draw me. I
• 21:14
Speaker 5: don't care who's playing. It could be Prince and it
• 21:18
Speaker 5: could be Superman. I'm not interested in watching a flight
• 21:22
Speaker 5: football game with NFL players.
• 21:25
  Speaker 4: I'm just not. I'm sorry. It's nothing against I'm not
• 21:28
  Speaker 4: knocking the sport.
• 21:29
Speaker 2: I appreciate the effort to try to make it say
• 21:32
Speaker 2: and shun and all that kind.
• 21:33
Speaker 5: Of stuff, but it's not It's not what it was,
• 21:36
Speaker 5: and it just is not something I'm interested in.
• 21:40
Speaker 2: To be honest, would you say this? Would you say this?
• 21:43
Speaker 2: Then it's really this is not a this is not
• 21:47
Speaker 2: a Dion issue or is your door issue? As much
• 21:51
Speaker 2: as this is the NFL as a whole. Sure, because
• 21:55
  Speaker 2: you you either. I mean, it's a it's a football.
• 22:00
Speaker 2: I'm going to a Pro Bowl because of football, right,
• 22:04
Speaker 2: I don't want to do anything other than football. I
• 22:07
Speaker 2: don't want to do don't add anything to the football.
• 22:10
Speaker 2: Just give me the football. Lests go and play.
• 22:12
Speaker 5: If you went to the NBA All Star Game and
• 22:14
Speaker 5: they play horse, yes instead, I'm stretching it a little bit,
• 22:21
Speaker 5: but no, you are not. It's a watered down version
• 22:24
Speaker 5: of what you want to see in an All Star
• 22:28
Speaker 5: Pro Bowl type of atmosphere.
• 22:30
  Speaker 2: No, you're that's that's a great example. That's a great
• 22:33
Speaker 2: example because who would be who would be interested in
• 22:37
  Speaker 2: watching that?
• 22:38
  Speaker 3: Not me?
• 22:39
  Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I was kidding you. I won't be.
• 22:43
  Speaker 2: I won't watch it.
• 22:44
Speaker 5: But I mean it's just you know, it's it is
• 22:47
Speaker 5: what it is. And he is going to be starting
• 22:50
Speaker 5: in the Pro Bowl and he'll be a he'll get
• 22:52
Speaker 5: to go out and say he's a Pro Bowler just
• 22:54
  Speaker 5: like you.
• 22:55
Speaker 2: So welcome to that. All right. So I'm gonna I'm
• 23:01
Speaker 2: gonna we got a couple of different things that we
• 23:03
Speaker 2: were going to talk about, but I'm gonna jump. I
• 23:05
Speaker 2: wanted to talk about since we got the dad hun
• 23:09
Speaker 2: kids in sports. Yeah, when we when you when you
• 23:15
Speaker 2: start talking about like and and again, I work for
• 23:20
Speaker 2: the City of South Charleston, and we and and Frank Mullins,
• 23:24
Speaker 2: the mayor of South Charleston, does a great job with
• 23:30
Speaker 2: supporting youth sports, you know. And you know, we've got
• 23:34
Speaker 2: some sports that you know, kids that can't pay, they
• 23:36
Speaker 2: don't have to pay. They you know, we we we
• 23:39
Speaker 2: go out to try to support and make sure that
• 23:41
Speaker 2: they are they're educated about the sport. If nothing else,
• 23:45
Speaker 2: that's that's the most important thing. Sure, what I think
• 23:48
Speaker 2: has happened into Well, can.
• 23:50
Speaker 5: I throw a study out? Let me let me throw
• 23:52
Speaker 5: this study out because I came across this. This this
• 23:53
Speaker 5: study actually was the results of the study were released
• 23:57
Speaker 5: in July, and I just happened to come across it
• 23:59
Speaker 5: when I'm on the internet a few days ago, and
• 24:01
Speaker 5: I thought it was kind of intrigued me, so I
• 24:03
Speaker 5: kind of read the article. But this was actually the
• 24:07
Speaker 5: results of a study conducted by the Center for Sports
• 24:10
Speaker 5: Leadership and Learning, which is an institution that is based
• 24:15
Speaker 5: in Dallas, Texas that for the past four or five years,
• 24:18
Speaker 5: basically what you know they're they're trying to instill leadership
• 24:23
Speaker 5: skills for coaches, for you know, people that sponsor youth
• 24:27
Speaker 5: sports things of that nature, or actually all sports.
• 24:30
Speaker 4: It doesn't necessarily have to be youth.
• 24:31
Speaker 5: But they did a study on youth and what they
• 24:33
Speaker 5: found was, and it was kind of alarming, seventy percent
• 24:36
Speaker 5: of kids quit organized sports by the age of thirteen.
• 24:40
Speaker 5: That's that's the study that they did in you Do
• 24:43
Speaker 5: you think that's a true true facts, Yes.
• 24:46
Speaker 2: Yes, and and and there's and there's still a lot
• 24:49
Speaker 2: more that will go even earlier than that, you know,
• 24:53
Speaker 2: just just being around you sports. You know, we you know,
• 24:58
Speaker 2: the city of South Trust, like I said, answers youth
• 25:01
Speaker 2: sports football, basketball, baseball, and we had one team, we
• 25:08
Speaker 2: builded one team last season of three okay, so and
• 25:14
Speaker 2: we and we literally had like I'm gonna say, maybe
• 25:19
Speaker 2: fifteen players playing football where we should be having you know,
• 25:25
Speaker 2: twenty twenty five per team in all three groups, you know.
• 25:30
Speaker 2: And part of it has decreased, yes, and because and
• 25:35
Speaker 2: part of it is because the winning and losing issue
• 25:39
Speaker 2: and parents, you know, they get upset when their kids lose,
• 25:47
Speaker 2: and the kids understand that reality and they don't want
• 25:52
Speaker 2: to lose. But this is not this is not where,
• 25:55
Speaker 2: This is not where. And I don't think youth football
• 25:58
Speaker 2: or youth sports should really be about winning and losing.
• 26:03
Speaker 2: I think it has some kind of way if we
• 26:06
Speaker 2: don't change youth sports into competition just I want to
• 26:13
Speaker 2: compete against you, right and I don't, and we don't.
• 26:16
Speaker 2: The winning and losing does not have to matter.
• 26:19
Speaker 5: That was something that they cited as one of the reasons.
• 26:22
  Speaker 4: Yes, okay.
• 26:23
Speaker 5: And it was the fact that you know, if if
• 26:25
Speaker 5: the kids aren't playing for the and the parents aren't
• 26:28
Speaker 5: there for the right reasons, which is basically, you know,
• 26:30
Speaker 5: to to find joy in the game, find joy in
• 26:34
Speaker 5: the sport. Growth, you know, health, life, life lessons. You've
• 26:39
Speaker 5: said that before, then you know that that's a reason
• 26:42
  Speaker 5: that it's it's it's it's coming down.
• 26:44
Speaker 4: The numbers are coming down. They also gave four other reasons.
• 26:46
Speaker 5: I want to get your opinion on these, Carl, because
• 26:48
Speaker 5: you obviously coach, uh you know, youth sports. One they
• 26:52
Speaker 5: said was burnout from the student or from the from
• 26:55
Speaker 5: the athlete, which you just touched on that early specialization
• 27:00
Speaker 5: and kind of putting them in a box too early
• 27:03
Speaker 5: inequity which is the money part, and then what we
• 27:07
Speaker 5: just touched on the loss of joy. Those were the
• 27:09
Speaker 5: four main reasons that they feel like the numbers for
• 27:14
Speaker 5: kids participating are coming down.
• 27:16
Speaker 4: What's your opinion on this.
• 27:18
Speaker 2: I would agree with every one of them, and probably
• 27:22
Speaker 2: could add to the pressure from a parent to their
• 27:27
  Speaker 2: to that kid because I have a kid that's a
• 27:31
Speaker 2: good size. I think I'm the dad who's played football.
• 27:37
Speaker 2: I think he should be great because because of his
• 27:42
Speaker 2: size and his physical his physical traits, But for whatever reason,
• 27:47
  Speaker 2: he's not m or So if he's not, I think
• 27:53
Speaker 2: it's because he's not trying hard enough, or I need
• 27:58
Speaker 2: to train him more, which is only going to deter
• 28:03
Speaker 2: him to like the sport even more. He's gonna dislike
• 28:08
Speaker 2: it more because he wants it. My issue me growing
• 28:14
Speaker 2: up with my dad being a die hard football fan
• 28:19
Speaker 2: and he pushed me beyond belief. But the only but
• 28:25
Speaker 2: the issue with that was that I love football too,
• 28:31
Speaker 2: and I wanted to be good. I wanted to get
• 28:34
Speaker 2: to every next level that there possibly could be, and
• 28:38
Speaker 2: my dad was part of that. So him making me
• 28:42
Speaker 2: go out and do anything in the backyard, I was
• 28:47
Speaker 2: actually okay with that. Sir, you know, I wasn't fighting
• 28:50
Speaker 2: him against it, you know, I just hated that, you know,
• 28:55
Speaker 2: I was never he never had given me enough to
• 28:57
Speaker 2: say that I was good enough. I could always be better,
• 29:00
Speaker 2: you know. And and but in hindsight, I needed to.
• 29:06
Speaker 2: He was right. I needed to be better in every
• 29:08
Speaker 2: level that I could be if I was going to
• 29:11
Speaker 2: reach the dream that I was talking about wanting to be.
• 29:15
  Speaker 5: And see, I think I think that's a different kind
• 29:17
Speaker 5: of pressure. And did he did he did he try
• 29:20
Speaker 5: to categorize you at a young age or did he
• 29:22
Speaker 5: just say play play football and figure it out?
• 29:25
Speaker 2: He had no idea of what position I was to play, right,
• 29:28
Speaker 2: He didn't have He didn't care if I was a quarterback,
• 29:30
  Speaker 2: running back.
• 29:32
Speaker 5: I played guard my first You played a variety of
• 29:35
Speaker 5: positions before you settled on safe. This is what you're saying, yes, okay,
• 29:38
  Speaker 5: And I think that's what they're saying.
• 29:40
Speaker 2: And he never he dad never said anything about it.
• 29:44
Speaker 2: He didn't care where I was playing, if I was
• 29:46
Speaker 2: playing a position that my dad was was the kind
• 29:50
Speaker 2: of man to say that the coach knows what he's doing,
• 29:53
  Speaker 2: so he's that's why he's there.
• 29:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, And so I think what you're saying.
• 29:58
Speaker 5: I'm just gonna try to sum up what you what
• 30:00
Speaker 5: you're saying with your relationship with your dad in football
• 30:02
Speaker 5: at a young age, that the long term athletic development
• 30:08
Speaker 5: was what you were focused on, not on you know,
• 30:11
Speaker 5: just you're going to be a quarterback, Carl, and so
• 30:14
Speaker 5: we're going to work on quarterback skills and whether you
• 30:16
Speaker 5: like it or not, our quarterback material.
• 30:19
Speaker 2: You're right, my dad never had had an Do you
• 30:21
  Speaker 2: think that happens now and you I don't. I don't.
• 30:23
Speaker 2: I think I think most people think that their kid
• 30:26
Speaker 2: is something. Even if they're a good quarterback at the
• 30:30
Speaker 2: youth level, that does not mean but do they get.
• 30:34
Speaker 5: Do they get stuck on a position? Sometimes?
• 30:36
Speaker 2: Yes? And that's and I think they get stuck And
• 30:39
Speaker 2: I think the parent gets stuck on that position because
• 30:45
Speaker 2: you got to leave that up to the coach. You gotta,
• 30:47
Speaker 2: you know, because the question I would ask a parent
• 30:50
Speaker 2: who thinks that their kid has is worthy of or
• 30:54
Speaker 2: belongs in a certain position, what what get? What makes
• 30:59
  Speaker 2: you think that?
• 31:00
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 31:01
Speaker 2: What is it about your son that you think he
• 31:04
Speaker 2: should be a quarterback?
• 31:07
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 31:07
Speaker 2: Well he can throw the ball, Yeah, he can throw
• 31:09
Speaker 2: the ball, and he throws me passes thirty year old.
• 31:12
Speaker 5: The better question is does the Sun want to be
• 31:14
  Speaker 5: a quarterback?
• 31:15
  Speaker 7: You know?
• 31:16
Speaker 5: I mean when you stifle their creativity and and their
• 31:19
Speaker 5: and their ownership, you know, they they may want to
• 31:22
Speaker 5: be a safety like Carl.
• 31:24
Speaker 2: Lee, and you can't and you can't you can you
• 31:28
Speaker 2: can't box them in and you can't assume from season,
• 31:31
Speaker 2: from from level to level that they're going to be
• 31:35
Speaker 2: the same thing. Again, I played, I played at Marshall.
• 31:39
Speaker 2: I was a safety. I played safety one year in
• 31:43
Speaker 2: Minnesota in my second season, and I was so happy
• 31:47
Speaker 2: to go back to corner because I knew that was
• 31:51
Speaker 2: not my position, you know, And and I had only
• 31:55
Speaker 2: played corner maybe two games in my entire life at Marshall, Right,
• 32:00
Speaker 2: but I was drafted as a corner. Then, like again,
• 32:04
Speaker 2: my second year in the league, I ended up going
• 32:06
Speaker 2: back to safety, and like I said, I hated it.
• 32:08
Speaker 2: My third year, I come back to corner, and I
• 32:11
Speaker 2: get a guy named Pete Carroll. Yeah, and the rest
• 32:15
Speaker 2: of my career is history, and and and and I
• 32:18
Speaker 2: say that again because just the fortunate piece of somebody
• 32:24
Speaker 2: recognizing a coach recognizing what is best for me, what
• 32:29
Speaker 2: might be what what might.
• 32:31
Speaker 5: Be something not telling me, encouraging you and showing me
• 32:37
Speaker 5: what I can do and how I can do it,
• 32:39
Speaker 5: not saying you have to do it, but here's something
• 32:41
Speaker 5: you might you might want to try.
• 32:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well we were going to press, we were
• 32:46
Speaker 2: gonna go to bump and run, man the man blitzing
• 32:49
Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. We were gonna do that.
• 32:51
Speaker 2: So you either had to fit that or you were
• 32:54
Speaker 2: gonna be gone. But it was again, part of that
• 32:57
Speaker 2: is being taught, and the other piece of it is
• 33:00
Speaker 2: being willing to say, Okay, well I don't want to
• 33:03
Speaker 2: be a safe anyway, so I can be a corner
• 33:06
Speaker 2: and do what now, Okay, do it this way that
• 33:09
Speaker 2: you know, I'm trying to get that information. And this
• 33:12
Speaker 2: is before Pete Carroll is Pete Carroll, right, you know,
• 33:16
Speaker 2: this is long before anybody knew who he was. And
• 33:19
Speaker 2: all of that, all that teaching, all of that knowledge
• 33:25
Speaker 2: that he sent to me gave to me. That's that's
• 33:29
Speaker 2: why I'm sitting here.
• 33:30
Speaker 4: Right you know. Oh, we know coaches are like that.
• 33:34
Speaker 5: They're the main ingredients, the staple, they really are the
• 33:38
Speaker 5: development of an athlete. And and there was something that
• 33:41
Speaker 5: I also read in the study that you and Hollis
• 33:44
Speaker 5: have said more than once on the podcast that that
• 33:46
Speaker 5: I can recall, but you should have an emphasis on
• 33:49
Speaker 5: multi sport participation. So if you're playing football, just like
• 33:54
Speaker 5: you guys have talked about, we want to see you
• 33:56
Speaker 5: play basketball, run track, do something in addition to that sport,
• 34:01
Speaker 5: because you may find that that sport it more suits
• 34:04
Speaker 5: you than the one that they're they're driving you to
• 34:07
  Speaker 5: participate in.
• 34:09
Speaker 2: And I would I would say, I would say this
• 34:11
Speaker 2: that if if as an adult, if you were learning
• 34:17
Speaker 2: something and somebody was somebody was teaching you that craft
• 34:24
Speaker 2: that you are looking to do, you would you would
• 34:27
Speaker 2: invest yourself into that in that knowledge. So I say
• 34:32
Speaker 2: that to say, in order in order to be to
• 34:40
Speaker 2: allow a kid to be a a player in any sport,
• 34:50
Speaker 2: don't don't lock them into one thing to one thing. Yeah,
• 34:55
Speaker 2: because one thing helps the next thing, and the next
• 34:58
Speaker 2: thing helps the next. If you want to do if
• 35:02
Speaker 2: you're not going to do footwork with your with your child,
• 35:08
Speaker 2: then you better put him in basketball. If you don't
• 35:11
Speaker 2: have a training regiment that's gonna help him get faster,
• 35:15
Speaker 2: put him in track.
• 35:16
  Speaker 4: There you go.
• 35:18
  Speaker 2: It's a great point I mean that you you're gonna
• 35:23
Speaker 2: you're gonna be You're gonna understand when it's too late,
• 35:26
Speaker 2: when all of a sudden they're saying that he's too slow.
• 35:29
Speaker 5: Well, and that's gonna help with burnout, because if you're
• 35:32
Speaker 5: just focused on one sport, one position all the time, you.
• 35:36
  Speaker 4: Know, it's easy.
• 35:37
Speaker 5: It's just like anybody that that has a work position
• 35:40
Speaker 5: or a job that you know, if you do too
• 35:42
Speaker 5: much all the time, you're going to experience burnout.
• 35:46
Speaker 4: And and and the kids are no different.
• 35:48
Speaker 2: They're no different. And and and hear me out. I
• 35:52
Speaker 2: started in basketball not because I could shoot, not because
• 35:55
Speaker 2: I could dribble, not because I could do anything other
• 35:59
Speaker 2: than play deepense, which was okay with me, because it
• 36:02
Speaker 2: was footwork and I had to pass Coach Walden Woon.
• 36:06
Speaker 2: If I took a shot, I'd be sitting on the bench.
• 36:09
Speaker 2: I had to cover. I have to cover guard the
• 36:12
Speaker 2: guy who was their best player. Basketball, football, baseball, like
• 36:22
Speaker 2: any sport that I played. The only thing that I
• 36:26
Speaker 2: was ever any good was football, and I used they
• 36:31
Speaker 2: I enjoy I enjoyed the other sports because I was
• 36:34
Speaker 2: getting something from it, right, you know, yes, yeah, I
• 36:40
Speaker 2: don't think I could have just just dove into football
• 36:43
Speaker 2: and been into it every single day for forever. I
• 36:47
Speaker 2: needed a break. But in the yeah, and in the
• 36:51
Speaker 2: break though, what they're getting is they're getting something special.
• 36:55
Speaker 2: You know, they're getting another skill set that will help them. Yeah.
• 37:02
Speaker 5: I mean to me, it's not rocket science. I mean,
• 37:05
Speaker 5: I think all of this the study really made sense.
• 37:07
Speaker 5: And especially when I started reading through and the things
• 37:10
Speaker 5: that they recommended to remedy some of the things that
• 37:13
Speaker 5: are causing you know this, this these kids to leave
• 37:18
Speaker 5: youth sports. I was like, oh wow, Carl and Hollis
• 37:21
Speaker 5: have said this over and over on the podcast, and
• 37:24
Speaker 5: so it was kind of refreshing to know that, you know,
• 37:28
Speaker 5: we make sense sometimes sometimes Yeah.
• 37:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got a nice to know.
• 37:35
Speaker 5: So one more thing I wanted before we leave this issue, Carl.
• 37:39
Speaker 5: The one thing that I read about was the inequity
• 37:43
Speaker 5: and this statistic is disturbing as well, and maybe you
• 37:46
Speaker 5: have some ideas I'm kind of at a loss about
• 37:48
Speaker 5: when I'm, well, it makes sense. I don't like it,
• 37:51
Speaker 5: but it makes sense. So they're saying that seventy percent
• 37:54
Speaker 5: of the kids who play youth sports come from high
• 37:57
Speaker 5: income families versus thirty percent scent coming from your low income.
• 38:02
Speaker 5: So you know some of the things.
• 38:03
Speaker 4: That those are barriers.
• 38:06
Speaker 5: We know that that income, money, finances are barriers for
• 38:10
Speaker 5: these kids to participate. So what do you think some
• 38:13
Speaker 5: what are some things that we could do to help
• 38:15
Speaker 5: remedy those barrier barriers?
• 38:17
Speaker 2: Well, I think it's disturbing to me, is it you? Yes, Okay,
• 38:22
Speaker 2: it's right. And I think that the most important piece
• 38:26
Speaker 2: to that is we have to look at it. Yeah,
• 38:30
Speaker 2: you know, we have to look at it. We have
• 38:31
Speaker 2: to we have to first admit to it. Your your stats,
• 38:36
Speaker 2: your status are great, and they are and they are.
• 38:40
Speaker 2: If you get a stat then you have a stat
• 38:43
Speaker 2: and then we have to assume that that status.
• 38:45
Speaker 4: Need to highlight what you've just said, like, but.
• 38:47
Speaker 2: But we, but we The problem is who's going to
• 38:51
Speaker 2: call that out? Right? Who's going to call out So
• 38:57
Speaker 2: we we know, we know the statistics of the number
• 39:04
Speaker 2: of black white athletes that are in the NFL in
• 39:09
Speaker 2: college Division one. We we know those kinds of numbers. Right,
• 39:14
Speaker 2: If those numbers are drastically different than what youth sports is,
• 39:21
Speaker 2: is there not a problem? Is there something going on?
• 39:24
Speaker 2: Is there something wrong? And and and you can you can.
• 39:31
Speaker 2: You can. There's a couple of different ways that you
• 39:34
Speaker 2: can mask that. Some of that is money cost.
• 39:38
Speaker 5: Right, you can cost But they were they were talking
• 39:41
Speaker 5: about like these travel travel ball it costs a lot
• 39:44
Speaker 5: of of you know, there's a lot of costs to
• 39:46
Speaker 5: that with equipment and you know, covering the travel and
• 39:50
Speaker 5: and and all the things that come with it.
• 39:52
  Speaker 2: And you know it's it's it's a lot well and
• 39:54
Speaker 2: and to the parent who has a has a talented kid,
• 39:59
Speaker 2: and and all people from travel sports are going to
• 40:01
Speaker 2: be they'll hate me for this, But that's fine. This
• 40:04
Speaker 2: is just what I believe. I'm not sending my kid.
• 40:08
Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not paying for my kid to go
• 40:11
Speaker 2: to play, to go play against somebody in Ohio, Chicago,
• 40:18
Speaker 2: Virginia or whatever. I'm gonna put them in youth sports
• 40:21
Speaker 2: here and let them play because at some point, because.
• 40:26
Speaker 5: And do you think that's part of the problem too,
• 40:29
Speaker 5: is travel ball. Because here's youth organized youth sports.
• 40:33
Speaker 2: And for everybody who knows me, who knows who is
• 40:37
Speaker 2: involved in travel ball knows this is my position, right,
• 40:42
Speaker 2: I don't care at the end of the day. At
• 40:45
Speaker 2: the end of the day, the kids who are playing
• 40:50
Speaker 2: travel ball or whatever you want to call it. They're not.
• 40:56
  Speaker 2: They're not. You're saying that they're getting better because they're
• 40:59
Speaker 2: playing against better competition. Who's measuring that competition?
• 41:06
Speaker 5: I mean, I guess records, because that because that the records,
• 41:09
  Speaker 5: the kids are.
• 41:10
Speaker 2: Okay. So let's say you go to Ohio. You go
• 41:12
Speaker 2: to Ohio and you play a basketball team that's got
• 41:16
Speaker 2: some really super talented kids, or based off of how
• 41:22
Speaker 2: good your kids are, right, so maybe they're not that great.
• 41:26
Speaker 2: You know, maybe they're just better than your kid, Right,
• 41:28
  Speaker 2: that's just losing.
• 41:29
Speaker 5: I mean, I think I think travel ball has the
• 41:31
Speaker 5: right intent. I think I think I think families want
• 41:35
Speaker 5: what's best for their kids, and they think that. You know,
• 41:37
Speaker 5: the trend is to you know, invest in your child
• 41:41
Speaker 5: becoming a better athlete and whatever sport it is.
• 41:44
Speaker 2: You know, to invest does not always mean money, true invest.
• 41:50
Speaker 5: Is, but I think in our society today that that's
• 41:52
Speaker 5: kind of what we equate invest with. Do you not agree?
• 41:56
  Speaker 2: I mean, I think you're saying it's just as valuable.
• 41:59
  Speaker 2: I do. I do. And there's a gentleman who who
• 42:05
Speaker 2: trains kids almost every day. Sean lewis, great guy, great guy,
• 42:13
Speaker 2: and he is helping kids be better and understand work
• 42:20
Speaker 2: ethic today. Okay, right in this moment, I'm off I'm
• 42:26
Speaker 2: fine with that, okay, because he's not he's not guaranteeing
• 42:31
Speaker 2: them success. He's he's just trying to get them to
• 42:37
Speaker 2: to learn how to work. His goal is to get
• 42:41
Speaker 2: them to understand how to work and and and and
• 42:44
Speaker 2: create the work ethic that you will need going forward
• 42:47
Speaker 2: once you get past him. We just and to me,
• 42:55
Speaker 2: I would not I would not really ever want to
• 43:00
Speaker 2: go to a trainer per se myself, right if because
• 43:06
Speaker 2: until I can do it on my own. Now, if
• 43:11
Speaker 2: I can do it on my own, now, I can
• 43:13
Speaker 2: go to somebody who has an expertise in it and
• 43:16
Speaker 2: and be more than willing to listen to what he's
• 43:17
Speaker 2: got to say. Sure, but if I'm not that kid, yeah,
• 43:24
Speaker 2: I'm wasting I'm wasting my folks is money? Yeah, And
• 43:29
Speaker 2: what's my goal? What's my goal? What is my ultimate goal?
• 43:33
  Speaker 2: As a kid. I'm sending a kid to a trainer
• 43:36
Speaker 2: and who's a knowledgeable person who can help him, But
• 43:41
Speaker 2: he doesn't have the goals. He doesn't have well.
• 43:45
Speaker 5: And that just proves our stat Yeah, I mean It
• 43:48
Speaker 5: just proves the stat we started this whole conversation with.
• 43:51
Speaker 5: We've got seventy percent of these kids that are quitting
• 43:53
Speaker 5: organized sports according to this study. And unless we can
• 43:58
Speaker 5: get it turned around, it's want to carry over to
• 44:01
Speaker 5: the college, collegiate level, the high school levels, NFL. I mean,
• 44:05
Speaker 5: if we don't start young and give them some foundational
• 44:09
Speaker 5: skills interested in the sport, what's going to happen to
• 44:12
  Speaker 5: the sport?
• 44:13
Speaker 2: If my dad, If I if my dad was paying
• 44:15
Speaker 2: for Shawn Lewis to train me, and and Sewn Lewis
• 44:23
Speaker 2: would go to go to my dad and say, you
• 44:25
Speaker 2: know what, he just ain't given me really all that
• 44:30
Speaker 2: he's got. Not only would I be at at Sean
• 44:38
  Speaker 2: Lewis's beckon call because I know I don't want him
• 44:45
Speaker 2: to make another call because another call is detriment to
• 44:48
Speaker 2: my help. No, he wasn't going to play, and the
• 44:55
Speaker 2: fact that he might have been paying him money to
• 44:57
Speaker 2: do that. Yeah, if you're if if if you send
• 45:02
Speaker 2: a kid to a trainer, you should be there to
• 45:05
Speaker 2: watch it. And you should watch your kid's bodying language
• 45:11
Speaker 2: and make sure that.
• 45:12
Speaker 6: It speaks louder louder than anything else and then when
• 45:16
Speaker 6: you do that, when when it's over and you feel
• 45:19
Speaker 6: like he or she didn't do enough right, that's a.
• 45:24
Speaker 2: Conversation like, look, we're gonna talk, we gotta talk. This
• 45:28
Speaker 2: is this is you're you're costing me money that I'm
• 45:31
Speaker 2: more than willing to use to get you better. But
• 45:35
Speaker 2: if you're not willing to work.
• 45:36
Speaker 5: But that's that comes under the umbrella of pressure again.
• 45:39
Speaker 5: I mean, you know, maybe they have these visions for
• 45:42
Speaker 5: their for their their baby that they're going to be,
• 45:46
Speaker 5: you know, whatever it is the sport is, they're going
• 45:48
Speaker 5: to be the best of the best.
• 45:49
Speaker 4: And they're not ready for that yet.
• 45:51
  Speaker 5: So I mean, it's it's it's that's what it is.
• 45:53
Speaker 2: Because and I and one hundred percent agree with you,
• 45:56
Speaker 2: because I do feel like some people who who get
• 46:01
Speaker 2: their kids a trainer, their kids not ready yet in
• 46:07
Speaker 2: what it is that you want me to do, whether
• 46:10
Speaker 2: it be football, basketball, or baseball, whatever.
• 46:12
Speaker 4: They're just not in that space.
• 46:13
Speaker 2: Just not in that space. Yeah, And I think, but
• 46:16
Speaker 2: now I'm going to ask you a question and see
• 46:19
  Speaker 2: if I'm.
• 46:20
Speaker 5: Crazy, Well, I could tell you the answer to that.
• 46:24
Speaker 2: I get up for that. So do you think that
• 46:29
Speaker 2: the parents can tell whether or not their kid is
• 46:33
Speaker 2: really truly invested in it and worthy of going to
• 46:37
Speaker 2: a trainer. Do you think that could you Do you
• 46:40
Speaker 2: think you could actually tell that.
• 46:42
Speaker 4: I would think a bystander could tell.
• 46:44
Speaker 5: I mean, I mean, I just know, as a former teacher,
• 46:47
Speaker 5: when when we're doing you know, when I was in
• 46:48
Speaker 5: the classroom and we had some type of project, I
• 46:50
Speaker 5: could point without a kid telling me anything.
• 46:54
Speaker 4: I could sell from the like you said.
• 46:56
Speaker 5: Body language that the odd you know, the eye roll
• 47:00
Speaker 5: or the you know, excitement in their eyes. I mean,
• 47:02
Speaker 5: I think kids can speak louder, yeah, without you know,
• 47:07
Speaker 5: they can say one thing but show you something else.
• 47:10
Speaker 5: You know, they're not they haven't mastered the art of,
• 47:12
Speaker 5: like adults, of being able to keep your real feelings
• 47:14
Speaker 5: inside and rest of the time.
• 47:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I and I really think that at some point,
• 47:20
Speaker 2: I think every parent and every child needs to have
• 47:26
Speaker 2: a conversation, an open conversation about what it is that
• 47:32
Speaker 2: you want to do or you that you don't want
• 47:35
  Speaker 2: to do.
• 47:35
Speaker 5: And here's here's the part that's that may be hard.
• 47:37
Speaker 5: You need to respect the conversation. Yes, you don't just
• 47:40
Speaker 5: say we're going to have a conversation and then say Oh,
• 47:42
  Speaker 5: it doesn't matter.
• 47:42
Speaker 4: We're still going to Johnny, you know.
• 47:44
Speaker 5: I mean you have to respect what he what that
• 47:46
Speaker 5: he or she has to say about it.
• 47:47
Speaker 2: Because if litt Johnny's not interested then and you're you're
• 47:51
Speaker 2: getting them a trainer and all that kind of stuff,
• 47:53
Speaker 2: that's not going to get him more interested in it.
• 47:55
Speaker 2: That's just not going to get a back off. Yeah. Yeah,
• 47:58
Speaker 2: So well I think.
• 48:01
Speaker 5: We covered that one pretty well. Carl Hollis would be proud,
• 48:05
Speaker 5: Yes he would. Yes, he seats here empty. We miss Hollis.
• 48:08
Speaker 5: Oh and by the way, when we had the conversation
• 48:10
Speaker 5: about shador Keep kind of chimed in. He felt like
• 48:12
Speaker 5: Joe Flacco probably would have been a good choice. Oh ye,
• 48:17
Speaker 5: which I'm with Coop. We're team Coop on that one,
• 48:19
  Speaker 5: aren't we.
• 48:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that would have been easy.
• 48:22
Speaker 8: My brief, my brief foray into the show here. I
• 48:25
Speaker 8: just had to look at his stats. He had twenty
• 48:26
Speaker 8: six hundred yards receiving, had more touchdowns and interceptions, and
• 48:29
Speaker 8: a sixty percent completion percentage. Those are more NFL like
• 48:33
Speaker 8: numbers than a fifty six percent completion percentage. In modern NFL,
• 48:37
Speaker 8: nobody completes fifty six percent of their passes. That's ridiculous.
• 48:40
Speaker 5: Yeah, well see, there you go, there.
• 48:42
Speaker 2: You go, Thanks Coop, yeah, thanks Coot.
• 48:46
Speaker 7: All right, well, ladies and gentlemen, me and Lisa we
• 48:49
Speaker 7: held down the show today and we will be back
• 48:52
  Speaker 7: again next week.
• 49:08
  Speaker 2: It's the Chicken
