- 0:38Speaker 5: All right, it's quitting time here on the Zone, five
- 0:40Speaker 5: o'clock on a Monday evening. Caleb Rapley here filling in
- 0:44Speaker 5: for Chip and now joining us in the studio is
- 0:49Speaker 5: mister Russey Berson, the Aggie historian, author and your resident
- 0:54Speaker 5: Texas Rangers fan.
- 0:55Speaker 6: Russy. How you doing I'm doing good, Caleb. I'm a
- 0:58Speaker 6: little disappointed with the Rangers after blowing a game yesterday
- 1:01Speaker 6: where they allowed three runs because they couldn't play any
- 1:04Speaker 6: defense in an any but they're still in first place,
- 1:07Speaker 6: even though my half game and so they're still playing
- 1:10Speaker 6: meaningful baseball, and of course in the American League West,
- 1:12Speaker 6: I think it's gonna come down to the very last,
- 1:15Speaker 6: the last few. It's got to come down last week.
- 1:18Speaker 6: There is no doubt about it.
- 1:19Speaker 5: It's shaping up that way for sure.
- 1:21Speaker 6: It's like, who really wants to win the division?
- 1:24Speaker 5: Nobody?
- 1:25Speaker 6: Nobody, And we'll talk a little bit later. Because I
- 1:27Speaker 6: saw a couple of trade possibilities. The Athletic threw out
- 1:32Speaker 6: a couple of trade possibilities. I thought one of them
- 1:35Speaker 6: involved the Rangers, and I really like it, but we'll
- 1:37Speaker 6: talk about that a little later.
- 1:39Speaker 5: Yeah, it doesn't really look like anybody wants to win
- 1:41Speaker 5: the AL West right now. With the amount of losing
- 1:44Speaker 5: streaks that each of these teams have had, you would
- 1:47Speaker 5: think somebody would have pulled away by now.
- 1:49Speaker 6: What about the Red Sox Thirteen straight wins? That is
- 1:53Speaker 6: just absolutely crazy. It's something that they hadn't done since
- 1:56Speaker 6: like the early nineteen hundreds. Everybody wrote them off, including me,
- 2:00Speaker 6: any of the Red Sox fans. They were probably like
- 2:03Speaker 6: two weeks ago. Everybody was talking to who they're gonna trade.
- 2:06Speaker 6: They're gonna be sellers, sellers, sellers, and now thirteen straight
- 2:12Speaker 6: and now they're above five hundred. And it's just amazing.
- 2:16Speaker 6: What a streak like that too, you know, I've seen
- 2:18Speaker 6: it so many times. If a team can rattle off
- 2:21Speaker 6: ten twelve games in a row, it will often be
- 2:24Speaker 6: enough to win the division or get into the postseason,
- 2:27Speaker 6: because if you just play five hundred baseball or a
- 2:30Speaker 6: little below five hundred baseball the rest of the way,
- 2:33Speaker 6: then you're in. And even when the Rangers won the
- 2:35Speaker 6: World Series in twenty twenty three, they were forty and
- 2:38Speaker 6: twenty after sixty games, but they were below five hundred
- 2:41Speaker 6: of the rest of the year, but it was still
- 2:43Speaker 6: enough to get them in. It takes that hot streak
- 2:45Speaker 6: at some point in time, and nobody in the West
- 2:48Speaker 6: has had that hot streak. I still think, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 6: on paper, theoretically the Mariners are the best team.
- 2:57Speaker 5: I'd agree with that if cal Rally ever gets his
- 2:59Speaker 5: back going.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Yeah, and I hope he never does.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Uh.
- 3:02Speaker 6: You know, they after the Rangers host the White Sox
- 3:05Speaker 6: three tonight tomorrow and the next day, and then the
- 3:08Speaker 6: Mariners coming for four that series, and these two series
- 3:12Speaker 6: are gonna be big, and then they go to Houston
- 3:15Speaker 6: for three and so those ten games are going to
- 3:20Speaker 6: decide whether the Rangers or buyers sellers, and at this point,
- 3:25Speaker 6: you know, it's hard to even talk about selling. I
- 3:30Speaker 6: just listened to Chris Young on the Dallas for Worth
- 3:32Speaker 6: radio station. He has a show every Monday, and he
- 3:35Speaker 6: was just talking about, well, we're gonna do whatever's best
- 3:38Speaker 6: and to keep this team in the race and be competitive,
- 3:41Speaker 6: and uh, we're gonna give it a run. So I
- 3:44Speaker 6: think that's just Chris Young's personality. Quite frankly, the Rangers
- 3:48Speaker 6: and Astros don't have a lot to get, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 6: a huge name because their farm systems are so decimated,
- 3:56Speaker 6: and you know, aside from Sebastian Walcutt for the Rangers,
- 4:00Speaker 6: they don't have a guy who's gonna draw a big
- 4:03Speaker 6: name talent who's gonna be a true difference maker, at
- 4:09Speaker 6: least from the pitching standpoint. But again, I think we'll
- 4:12Speaker 6: talk a little bit later about some of the minor
- 4:14Speaker 6: trades that these teams can make to make themselves better,
- 4:17Speaker 6: because I mean, the Rangers have gotten a lot of
- 4:20Speaker 6: good contributions from guys who you know, I never heard of,
- 4:24Speaker 6: and they've done a great job of picking guys up
- 4:27Speaker 6: off off the waiver wire, so that's been a very
- 4:31Speaker 6: very interesting thing to see. Again, the American League West
- 4:35Speaker 6: is fifteen. The Rangers are leading at fifteen to forty nine.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Seattle's a half game back at fifty and fifty, and
- 4:43Speaker 6: the Astros are just four games back even though they've
- 4:46Speaker 6: lost four in a row. Interesting, there's only one team
- 4:50Speaker 6: in the American League West that has a positive run difference,
- 4:54Speaker 6: and that's the Mariners, and they're plus thirteen. If you
- 4:57Speaker 6: look over in the American East, the Yankees are plus
- 5:02Speaker 6: eighty five. It's pretty amazing how these teams are just
- 5:05Speaker 6: and then the the the Braves are plus one oh eight.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Yeah. The interesting thing you were talking about differential there
- 5:15Speaker 5: the Rangers, I think it was them last season that
- 5:17Speaker 5: had a really good run differential, Yeah, and ended up
- 5:20Speaker 5: being a five hundred team. Yes, Like it's just wild
- 5:22Speaker 5: how a lot of times that doesn't really tell you
- 5:25Speaker 5: anything about the team. Usually the best teams it does,
- 5:28Speaker 5: but those middle tier teams.
- 5:30Speaker 6: Do you ever look at that expected win loss total
- 5:33Speaker 6: in the standing, Yeah, because it's so interesting because the
- 5:36Speaker 6: Manners projected are fifty two and forty eight and the
- 5:39Speaker 6: Rangers are forty six. And forty three. That's the projected right,
- 5:44Speaker 6: and so it's interesting to see, you know, who's actually
- 5:48Speaker 6: projecting like it actually has a close record to what
- 5:52Speaker 6: their projection is because I mean, the Rangers just lost
- 5:54Speaker 6: fifteen to one, uh in the first game against the Braves.
- 5:57Speaker 6: That's hard to overcome. And your run differential.
- 6:00Speaker 5: The same thing with the A's when they lost. Was
- 6:01Speaker 5: it twenty three to one?
- 6:03Speaker 6: So like yeah, yeah, I mean that's really hard to
- 6:05Speaker 6: overcome and the run difference. All right, we're gonna go
- 6:07Speaker 6: out to the Polaris Fund Center or phone line. I've
- 6:11Speaker 6: got a very I'm very close to the person calling in.
- 6:15Speaker 6: I'm gonna welcome Lindsay Burston Shaw, my sister in from
- 6:18Speaker 6: South Carolina. How you doing, Lindsay?
- 6:20Speaker 7: Oh so, big brother, how's it going?
- 6:23Speaker 6: It's going good. You know, I really appreciate you being
- 6:25Speaker 6: on the show, because I was talking to Caleb here
- 6:28Speaker 6: before the show started as like, you know, I'm not
- 6:31Speaker 6: a soccer fan, but I don't know much about soccer.
- 6:36Speaker 6: But what I really enjoyed about the World Cup was
- 6:39Speaker 6: to see how much fun people were having foreigners Americans
- 6:46Speaker 6: just the response of gosh, this is a great country
- 6:50Speaker 6: and I know you and Richard, your husband, my brother
- 6:54Speaker 6: in law, big soccer fans, and I just y'all went
- 6:58Speaker 6: to a game, and I really wanted to get your perspective.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Y'all went to a game in Dallas, and Richard's from England.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Obviously y'all are big England fans, and so just just
- 7:10Speaker 6: talk about, if you will, what that experience was like
- 7:13Speaker 6: for the entire family.
- 7:15Speaker 7: Yeah, now, it was a fun one. I mean, honestly,
- 7:18Speaker 7: we were incredibly worried about just parking and what that
- 7:23Speaker 7: you know, game day experience would be like compared to
- 7:26Speaker 7: you know, a Cowboys game or even a college football
- 7:28Speaker 7: game at Jerry's World. But they had it really very coordinated.
- 7:33Speaker 7: We got there pretty early. We went to Texas Live,
- 7:36Speaker 7: and of course, like at Texas Live, it's it kind
- 7:40Speaker 7: of had a similar feeling to being I don't know,
- 7:43Speaker 7: like maybe even at Omaha, you know for the College
- 7:46Speaker 7: Series where everyone's walking around regardless of whether their team
- 7:50Speaker 7: is playing, they're walking around in their shirts. Right, So
- 7:52Speaker 7: like Japan and the Netherlands had played right before England
- 7:55Speaker 7: was playing Croatia, and you know you saw the Dutch
- 7:58Speaker 7: walking around and all of their their orange gear, from
- 8:03Speaker 7: from their fan walk and whatnot. And you know, people
- 8:08Speaker 7: were just so like talkative, you know, you'd walk up
- 8:12Speaker 7: to anyone and start having a conversation.
- 8:14Speaker 6: It was.
- 8:15Speaker 7: It was really great fun. I think that is frankly,
- 8:19Speaker 7: At and t had it really well organized in terms
- 8:21Speaker 7: of being able to you know, get drinks easily or
- 8:25Speaker 7: move around easily and that type of thing. I will
- 8:28Speaker 7: say I was kind of shocked though that I looked
- 8:32Speaker 7: up the attendance numbers and it was about seventy thousand
- 8:35Speaker 7: for the England versus Croatia game, and at the average
- 8:39Speaker 7: Cowboys game, I think it was probably like ninety thousand, right,
- 8:43Speaker 7: really did definitely feel like a lot less people. But yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 7: and I was shocked because the tickets were, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 7: so expensive and whatnot that you would think that every
- 8:54Speaker 7: single seat was sold out. Well, I have a friend
- 8:58Speaker 7: of mine who actually works Cowboy Stadium and she basically
- 9:01Speaker 7: said that, you know, FIFA was charging too much for
- 9:05Speaker 7: those field levels weeks that they.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Weren't all full and so y'all, y'all were up pretty high, right.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Oh, we were up very high.
- 9:14Speaker 6: How much, if you don't mind, how much per ticket
- 9:17Speaker 6: did you have to pay for that.
- 9:18Speaker 7: That's a great question, and Richard would know the answer
- 9:21Speaker 7: to that.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I don't know. He doesn't want you to know.
- 9:25Speaker 7: I will tell you. He did come back to me
- 9:27Speaker 7: as soon as those tickets went on sale and he said,
- 9:30Speaker 7: I just spent some of our retirement.
- 9:35Speaker 6: Well, he grew up obviously in England. Did he play
- 9:38Speaker 6: soccer throughout his childhood?
- 9:41Speaker 7: He did?
- 9:41Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 9:41Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, and so all three of the kids played soccer,
- 9:45Speaker 6: and so you had everybody there, I get minus one
- 9:49Speaker 6: of the kids, right, yes, okay, So from a family
- 9:53Speaker 6: experience going to the game, where does it rank on
- 9:57Speaker 6: your all time sports list? Let me preface this by
- 10:01Speaker 6: telling the Forber listeners out there that you went to
- 10:06Speaker 6: the TCU National Championship. You're a TCU cheerleader, TCU graduate,
- 10:09Speaker 6: so you got to go see tu play for the
- 10:11Speaker 6: National Championship. Wasn't a good game for TCU, but you
- 10:16Speaker 6: got to go. You got to be there. That's a
- 10:18Speaker 6: little more than any A and M fan living can
- 10:20Speaker 6: ever say. Because nineteen thirty nine was a long time ago.
- 10:23Speaker 6: I don't think anybody who went to that game, the
- 10:26Speaker 6: Sugar Bowl nineteen thirty nine is still alive. So where
- 10:29Speaker 6: does that rank going to the World Cup see England play.
- 10:34Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think if you'd ask for Richard
- 10:36Speaker 7: or even the kids, you know, they might put a
- 10:39Speaker 7: little higher than I would. But I will tell you
- 10:41Speaker 7: that any college football game is always going to be
- 10:43Speaker 7: at the top of my list, and especially as my
- 10:45Speaker 7: frogs are playing, right, I mean, that's just the reality
- 10:48Speaker 7: of it. It's your team playing, and it's like, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 7: what you missed from a World Cup game, which you
- 10:55Speaker 7: would get from even a premier league game, is like
- 10:58Speaker 7: that kind of synchronized tradition, you know, the like the
- 11:01Speaker 7: game day playbook if you will, with you know, the band,
- 11:04Speaker 7: the cheerleaders, the rituals, the things that you do, and
- 11:07Speaker 7: the World Cups didn't have that, you know, because they're
- 11:09Speaker 7: not favoring one team or another. There's like a home
- 11:12Speaker 7: field advantage. So but yeah, I mean college football very
- 11:17Speaker 7: much high on the list, although my husband would probably
- 11:20Speaker 7: you know, he went to both and his dream was
- 11:23Speaker 7: to go watch England play in a World Cup, which
- 11:26Speaker 7: so I'm sure he'd rank it higher.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Yeah, and you got to see a wind I'm curious,
- 11:31Speaker 6: did y'all watch the third place game or we all
- 11:35Speaker 6: just so frustrated after England lost that you didn't even bother.
- 11:38Speaker 7: No, I mean, we think that game is ridiculous and
- 11:41Speaker 7: it shouldn't be played. But we did watch it, just
- 11:43Speaker 7: the CS and Bob would score and he did and
- 11:46Speaker 7: I was happy to see that because I am not
- 11:49Speaker 7: a Messy fan.
- 11:50Speaker 6: But well because obviously the England lost to Argentina. Yes,
- 11:55Speaker 6: I understand. Did you know that the Messi played at
- 11:57Speaker 6: cayle Field earlier this year?
- 12:00Speaker 7: No, I did not.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Yeah, that was a big, big event, over one hundred thousand.
- 12:05Speaker 6: It was an exhibition game and Marcel Reid the quarterback
- 12:10Speaker 6: at Texas A and m where's number ten? And so
- 12:13Speaker 6: a pregame ceremony. Messi didn't actually play. Argentina played, but
- 12:18Speaker 6: during a pregame ceremony, Marcel Reid presented his number ten
- 12:22Speaker 6: jersey to Messy, which I'm sure of all Messi's accomplishments,
- 12:26Speaker 6: it's probably ranks there like number one all time that
- 12:30Speaker 6: he got to meet Marcel Reid. But no, I know,
- 12:34Speaker 6: very very frustrated that Argentina defeated England and that you
- 12:40Speaker 6: were not pleased with the coaching decisions to kind of
- 12:42Speaker 6: pull back and play defense.
- 12:44Speaker 7: Yes, that is absolutely. I think people give Argentina a
- 12:48Speaker 7: little bit, you know, or a lot of credit, and
- 12:50Speaker 7: which they deserve, don't get me wrong, but I think
- 12:52Speaker 7: that was an incredibly poor coaching decision.
- 12:55Speaker 6: So well, Messi was the only name I knew coming in,
- 12:58Speaker 6: but now I knew Kane, so so I know that
- 13:01Speaker 6: because I was watching, I was rooting for England.
- 13:05Speaker 7: Harry Kane was in my wedding though, I remember that.
- 13:11Speaker 6: Now, that's awesome. That is awesome. Well, hey, I thank
- 13:15Speaker 6: you so much coming on here. I love you, and uh,
- 13:18Speaker 6: this is the first got to talk to my sister
- 13:20Speaker 6: on the radio.
- 13:22Speaker 9: All right, Well, thanks, thanks.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Caleb, appreciate that. I just wanted to get the perspective
- 13:30Speaker 6: of somebody who had actually been to a World Cup game.
- 13:32Speaker 6: And if anybody's out there listening and they actually went
- 13:35Speaker 6: to a World Cup game, I'd love to hear the
- 13:37Speaker 6: experience that they had. If they went to Dallas Stadium,
- 13:41Speaker 6: which I hate that name because it's in Orleans and
- 13:44Speaker 6: and you know, I don't mind it not being at
- 13:47Speaker 6: and T, but I wanted it to be Arlington Stadium.
- 13:50Speaker 5: But or even just Texas Stadium.
- 13:52Speaker 6: Yeah, text, but they played in Houston, so I guess
- 13:56Speaker 6: they couldn't have done that.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Texas Stadium inflated Jerry Jones's ego a little to much.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Yes, yeah, that probably would have done the trick.
- 14:03Speaker 5: But honestly, because of the whole, you know, sponsorship thing,
- 14:08Speaker 5: Like I get why they made people not call it that,
- 14:11Speaker 5: but why couldn't we just call it Jerry World? Like
- 14:14Speaker 5: why wouldn't that had been amazing if that had been
- 14:16Speaker 5: the official FIFA name was Jerry World. And I guess
- 14:19Speaker 5: that's kind of a sponsorship, but that would have been hilarious.
- 14:22Speaker 6: I would have loved it, you know, because what they
- 14:24Speaker 6: call the championship game yesterday? It was a met Life
- 14:26Speaker 6: But what'd they call it? New York Stadium?
- 14:29Speaker 5: I think they called it New York Stadium. Yea, yeah, yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 5: it's it's weird. So I looked it up while y'all
- 14:37Speaker 5: were talking about it. The cheapest face value tickets for
- 14:40Speaker 5: that game was like two hundred and sixty five dollars.
- 14:44Speaker 5: That's face value from the venue.
- 14:46Speaker 6: Okay, not on the secondary market.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Secondary market it could have been who knows.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Well. At one time they were talking about like seven
- 14:53Speaker 6: point fifty for a parking spot that I believe it
- 14:56Speaker 6: and then they were talking about the Uber and the
- 14:59Speaker 6: you know what do you call it? The high rate?
- 15:01Speaker 5: The Uber Black.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Yeah, So I made a mistake of we went to
- 15:07Speaker 6: took my family to the Rangers Cubs game at Wrigley
- 15:11Speaker 6: twenty sixteen, and it was when the Rangers had the
- 15:14Speaker 6: best record the American League. Cubs went on to win
- 15:16Speaker 6: the World Series. I had the best record in the
- 15:18Speaker 6: National League. And it was very early in my Uber experience,
- 15:23Speaker 6: and I did not realize how much that was going
- 15:26Speaker 6: to cost me because right after the game, everybody and
- 15:29Speaker 6: the brother It's a Friday afternoon in Chicago, and it
- 15:33Speaker 6: took forever to get to our hotel. Once I once
- 15:37Speaker 6: we got done and I got out of the Uber
- 15:39Speaker 6: and saw how much it was going to be, I
- 15:41Speaker 6: was like, oh my gosh, that's going to cut into
- 15:43Speaker 6: our vacation. We might want to eat Wendy's one night
- 15:48Speaker 6: instead of the Deep Dish pizza.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, So what are the other big storylines following
- 15:56Speaker 5: this World Cup? So for all of these stadiums that
- 16:00Speaker 5: were in America, I think I think it was all
- 16:03Speaker 5: of them right. They had to have natural grass instead
- 16:07Speaker 5: of artificial turf, and it looked great. Yeah, it did
- 16:11Speaker 5: look great. I think that's FIFA regulations. But anyway, so
- 16:15Speaker 5: immediately after the last World Cup game at Dallas Stadium,
- 16:19Speaker 5: maybe we can call it AT and T again. World
- 16:21Speaker 5: Cup's over, we can call it by its real name again.
- 16:23Speaker 5: But immediately after that last game, they started rolling the
- 16:25Speaker 5: turf back out and there were there have been a
- 16:29Speaker 5: lot of NFL players on social media and otherwise come
- 16:32Speaker 5: out and say, you did this for the World Cup,
- 16:35Speaker 5: why can't you do it for us too, Why can't
- 16:37Speaker 5: we have natural grass just standard in the NFL MetLife Stadium,
- 16:42Speaker 5: like you were talking about. That's where they had the final. Uh,
- 16:45Speaker 5: they hosted eight World Cup matches on their natural grass field,
- 16:50Speaker 5: which was temporary, so with.
- 16:53Speaker 6: A lot more sense that they could actually keep that
- 16:56Speaker 6: in New York.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 6: The problem with keeping it at AT and T is
- 17:00Speaker 6: that that ridiculous video board blocks most of the sun.
- 17:05Speaker 6: And so what they had to do to grow that
- 17:07Speaker 6: grass is bring in those those low lamps. Yeah, and
- 17:10Speaker 6: they hung them over there. And but it's theoretically it's possible,
- 17:15Speaker 6: and to your point, Jerry Jones can.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Afford it exactly. That's yeah. So that's what I was
- 17:19Speaker 5: saying you know, before before we came on the air here,
- 17:23Speaker 5: I was saying, yes, it's expensive. I know it's a
- 17:26Speaker 5: lot of trouble to do this, but this is the
- 17:29Speaker 5: the NFL is the biggest sport in America.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Right.
- 17:32Speaker 5: The Cowboys, like you said, make the most money out
- 17:34Speaker 5: of any team them specifically, they should be able. Jerry
- 17:37Speaker 5: Jones can pay for it. Why doesn't he?
- 17:39Speaker 6: Right? I mean, they are the number one team in
- 17:42Speaker 6: all sports in America based on merchandising and revenue, obviously
- 17:48Speaker 6: not based on football results, because they have not been
- 17:51Speaker 6: to a Super Bowl since nineteen ninety six. You know,
- 17:53Speaker 6: my son turned thirty last week and he's he's never
- 17:56Speaker 6: seen the Cowboys win more than one playoff game, so
- 18:00Speaker 6: the super Bowl. He was born in ninety six, in
- 18:02Speaker 6: July of ninety six. The last time they were in
- 18:05Speaker 6: the Super Bowl was in January of ninety six. And so,
- 18:08Speaker 6: but nevertheless, there are so many Cowboys fans. And I'm
- 18:11Speaker 6: guilty of it too, because I've bought their merchandise and
- 18:14Speaker 6: I've bought the family the merchandise and all those kind
- 18:17Speaker 6: of things. But yeah, he can afford it, and it
- 18:20Speaker 6: is I would think that it is just and I
- 18:21Speaker 6: know they've come a long way with artificial turf right
- 18:25Speaker 6: in the safety of it, but it's still you can't
- 18:29Speaker 6: beat natural grass, especially playing football. I mean yeah, more
- 18:33Speaker 6: so football than just about anything else.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Yeah, Like we were talking about baseball, almost all of
- 18:38Speaker 5: the I think you said it was twenty eight out
- 18:40Speaker 5: of the thirty stadiums.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Now only two stadiums that don't have natural grass I
- 18:44Speaker 6: believe are Arizona in Texas.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's not really as much of a safety
- 18:49Speaker 5: thing in baseball. Like, yes, there is still some lateral movement,
- 18:52Speaker 5: but not near as much as there is in football.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Right because they're still dirt. I mean, it's still natural dirt,
- 18:58Speaker 6: not like in the old seventies, like when the and
- 19:00Speaker 6: the city used to have the cutouts, you know, and
- 19:02Speaker 6: those were awful because most of the turn underneath. Oh
- 19:06Speaker 6: it was terrible. Yeah like that too, I guess yeah, I.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Think that's right. But so the thing about the NFL,
- 19:13Speaker 5: it's exactly half of the stadiums have turf and exactly
- 19:18Speaker 5: half have grass. So it's not u you get used
- 19:21Speaker 5: to playing on turf because you're going back and forth
- 19:23Speaker 5: every week if you play, if you're that that's the
- 19:27Speaker 5: I think that's one of the bigger issues is that
- 19:30Speaker 5: if they were all turf, I think it'd be a
- 19:31Speaker 5: little easier to get used to it. And you know, honestly,
- 19:35Speaker 5: NFL probably wouldn't be as explosive because people wouldn't be
- 19:37Speaker 5: trying to cut as hard. So that's not a better product.
- 19:40Speaker 5: MetLife Stadium, the Jets and Giants, they've had some really
- 19:45Speaker 5: big names have injuries over the last six years. Yes,
- 19:47Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers Jets career came to a very abrupt start
- 19:52Speaker 5: and stop his first season with them when he tore
- 19:54Speaker 5: his achilles in like the third play of Game one.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Elik Neighbors who knows when he's going to come back
- 20:00Speaker 5: after his torn a cl So there have been a
- 20:02Speaker 5: lot of big names get hurt over the last six
- 20:05Speaker 5: years at MetLife specifically, I think that's kind of widely
- 20:07Speaker 5: regarded as the worst one. That one, and I'm pretty
- 20:10Speaker 5: sure Soldier Field a lot of players complain about. That's
- 20:13Speaker 5: the two that I've heard the most about.
- 20:14Speaker 6: But Soldier Field is natural grass, so yeah, that's not
- 20:18Speaker 6: that's not the one. I was saying. Soldier is natural grass, Yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 6: but I mean they natural grass n RG. I mean
- 20:25Speaker 6: that's got a roof on it. They got at diyk
- 20:28Speaker 6: And Park they got natural grass too. The reason they
- 20:30Speaker 6: couldn't do the National grass at the Ranger stage is
- 20:33Speaker 6: because they built that stadium so low and they you
- 20:37Speaker 6: literally come in. When you come in the concourse, you're
- 20:40Speaker 6: on the third or fourth level, so you have to
- 20:42Speaker 6: go down quite a bit to go to the field,
- 20:45Speaker 6: whereas at at Dyking Park, you know, you walk in,
- 20:48Speaker 6: you're pretty much the concourse. Yeah, you go down a
- 20:51Speaker 6: little bit towards the field, but it's not nearly as
- 20:53Speaker 6: far down there. And they do they open that roof
- 20:56Speaker 6: and they do a great job. But I was fascinated
- 20:58Speaker 6: to watch how they did that. They brought in the
- 21:01Speaker 6: red lights at Dallas Stadium and grew that thing the
- 21:07Speaker 6: entire surface and it was beautiful. So they've proven it
- 21:11Speaker 6: can be done and it can be maintained. But like
- 21:14Speaker 6: you said, to your point, Jerry's just too cheap to
- 21:18Speaker 6: do that on a weekly basis, I guess.
- 21:20Speaker 4: So.
- 21:20Speaker 5: George Kittle said NFL teams could play on grass fields
- 21:24Speaker 5: if the owners really cared. That's that was the gist
- 21:27Speaker 5: of his statement that he made, and this was back
- 21:29Speaker 5: in June Yeah. I got confused about Soldier Fields because
- 21:33Speaker 5: Katle Williams posted about it and I was like, oh,
- 21:36Speaker 5: I didn't think the Bears had artificial turf. They don't.
- 21:39Speaker 5: He was just posting about it. But anyway, but.
- 21:41Speaker 6: They may be playing in Indiana ver soon anyway, which
- 21:43Speaker 6: is stupid.
- 21:44Speaker 5: That's that's a whole other topic of conversation.
- 21:48Speaker 6: The Indiana Bears that I hate that.
- 21:51Speaker 5: That's so it's like one thing.
- 21:53Speaker 6: I would go ahead and just play Wisconsin at that point.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Sure, sure, but you know the Rangers are the which
- 21:59Speaker 5: they're the Texas Range. It's really the Cowboys that have
- 22:01Speaker 5: the misnomer of being the Dallas Cowboys that play in Arlington.
- 22:05Speaker 5: The Los Angeles Angels that play in Anaheim, right, those
- 22:08Speaker 5: are those all aren't as bad because at least they're
- 22:11Speaker 5: in the same state, right Gerry or ham is it Hammond?
- 22:14Speaker 10: Indiana?
- 22:14Speaker 5: I think is where the.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Jets and the Giants. It's like New York. Did they
- 22:18Speaker 6: play in New Jersey.
- 22:19Speaker 5: I think everybody's just used to that because it's pretty
- 22:21Speaker 5: much always been that way, right.
- 22:22Speaker 6: Because the meadowlands, Yeah, exactly, it was just but it's
- 22:26Speaker 6: still the first time I went to New York was
- 22:28Speaker 6: to see Texa, A and M play Florida State, and
- 22:31Speaker 6: I didn't realize how much of the cab ride was
- 22:33Speaker 6: going to take to get me to New Jersey. And
- 22:37Speaker 6: it's like, ye under the tunnel and you know the
- 22:40Speaker 6: traffic of New York City. And it was a you know,
- 22:43Speaker 6: first Monday. It was like Labor Day weekend, I guess.
- 22:46Speaker 6: And it was a kickoff class. So I just learned
- 22:50Speaker 6: a lot about Hey, it's not even in the state
- 22:54Speaker 6: of New York or certainly not the city of New York.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Yeah, parking's expensive enough here at football games. I don't
- 23:00Speaker 5: want to have to mess off anything.
- 23:01Speaker 6: But you know what I was thinking when we're talking
- 23:03Speaker 6: about grass, is like, thank god it's the Agricultural Mechanical School.
- 23:07Speaker 6: They're never going to not have grass either.
- 23:09Speaker 5: If they did, it would be a really.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Because I do remember when they had the turf and
- 23:13Speaker 6: it was just it was it just was so bad
- 23:17Speaker 6: for the ag school to have artificial turf, and they
- 23:20Speaker 6: had turf a long time and so when they redid it, Yeah,
- 23:24Speaker 6: and I don't think you could ever go back, nor
- 23:26Speaker 6: would they want to.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Yeah, we literally have a turf management program.
- 23:29Speaker 6: Correct, Hey, we get them at the golf course all
- 23:32Speaker 6: the time, they go through turf management, they come out
- 23:34Speaker 6: there and they intern with us, and so yeah, literally
- 23:38Speaker 6: that's a big deal over Texas A and M.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm very glad that that's not how it is
- 23:42Speaker 5: anymore with the artificial turf. That's a that would be
- 23:45Speaker 5: a bad look for us. And it's just it's outdoor
- 23:49Speaker 5: sports are meant to be played on grass, like that's
- 23:51Speaker 5: just Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 6: I want to say the last turf game they played
- 23:55Speaker 6: was nineteen ninety five against Texas and they lost that game,
- 24:00Speaker 6: and that was the last game of the Southwest Conference.
- 24:03Speaker 6: That was actually technically it wasn't the last game ever
- 24:06Speaker 6: in the Southwest Conference. Rice in Houston played later that
- 24:09Speaker 6: day as the last game of Southwest Conference history. But
- 24:13Speaker 6: ninety six, first year of the Big Twelve, they went
- 24:16Speaker 6: to natural grass and it's been natural grass ever since.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Really good move. Yeah, no doubts nineteen nineties or not.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Nineteen nineties Big Twelve. Texas A and M didn't always
- 24:26Speaker 5: make the best decisions, but that was what we had to.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Be careful when we're talking about grass and athletics anymore. Right,
- 24:31Speaker 6: we were actually we're talking about bermood. It's iff not
- 24:35Speaker 6: the other stuff.
- 24:36Speaker 5: We're talking about grass that you walk.
- 24:37Speaker 6: On right and play on and cut it out.
- 24:39Speaker 5: That's all you do with it.
- 24:40Speaker 6: You just walked on exactly right.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Man. That's a that's a whole nother rabbit hole we
- 24:45Speaker 5: could go down. Oh yeah, all right, Well, let's time

- 29:53Speaker 6: Without a fishing or hiking or something like that. Always
- 29:57Speaker 6: right all over the country.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Yep, So Rusty, you wanted to talk a little about
- 30:02Speaker 5: a little bit about some autograph stories.
- 30:04Speaker 6: Well, yeah, I saw this today and it was one
- 30:06Speaker 6: of the more interesting autograph stories that I've ever seen.
- 30:10Speaker 6: You probably heard a guy named Michael Jordan.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Is that that guy that played for the Washington Wizards.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Yes, he played for the Wizards for a brief time.
- 30:18Speaker 6: He actually played for the White Sox too, or the
- 30:20Speaker 6: White Sox. Yeah. So you want to take a guess
- 30:24Speaker 6: at when Michael Jordan or what Michael Jordan might have
- 30:28Speaker 6: signed as his first autograph? Just first autograph, Yeah, first autograph.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Let's go with basketball.
- 30:36Speaker 6: That is the obvious choice, right, Actually, the first known
- 30:41Speaker 6: autograph Michael Jordan signed was in nineteen seventy five the
- 30:46Speaker 6: North Carolina Dixie Youth Baseball State Tournament program. Baseball Okay, yep,
- 30:52Speaker 6: Baseball was his first love.
- 30:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Jordan was twelve years old when he signed it. Okay,
- 30:56Speaker 6: So here's the story. Twelve Yeah, and he was playing
- 30:59Speaker 6: in the Dixie Youth Baseball State Tournament and his hometown
- 31:05Speaker 6: was Cape Fear, which is about a four hour drive
- 31:10Speaker 6: from where the tournament was in King's Mountain. So Jordan
- 31:16Speaker 6: and another friend stayed with a host family and they
- 31:21Speaker 6: had a great time with Frank and Nina Mitcham and
- 31:26Speaker 6: at the end of the tournament, which Michael Jordan's team
- 31:29Speaker 6: almost won, they asked for Michael Jordan and his friend Reggie.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Let's see, I can't find Reggie's last name, but anyway,
- 31:40Speaker 6: so Michael Jordan and Reggie signed the tournament program and
- 31:44Speaker 6: gave it to the family. Recently, that program was sold
- 31:49Speaker 6: for thirty five thousand, two hundred and fifty dollars over bution,
- 31:52Speaker 6: so they kept it from nineteen seventy five. I mean,
- 31:56Speaker 6: that's a long time, fifty years to keep that, and
- 32:01Speaker 6: it's the first autograph that Michael Jordan ever signed. Just
- 32:05Speaker 6: a kind of cool little story about, you know, Michael Jordan,
- 32:09Speaker 6: his first love playing baseball and him signing it to
- 32:13Speaker 6: a family, and this going for thirty five thousand dollars.
- 32:16Speaker 6: So I paid off to keep that thing. For sure.
- 32:18Speaker 5: I want to know how they authenticated that.
- 32:20Speaker 6: That is a very good question.
- 32:23Speaker 5: Do you think his autograph looks the same when he's.
- 32:25Speaker 6: Probably not when he was twelve. Its probably has changed
- 32:28Speaker 6: over time. He's probably very you know, as a twelve
- 32:31Speaker 6: year old, you know, I used to practice my autograph
- 32:34Speaker 6: just in case, and it was very clear, you know,
- 32:38Speaker 6: And I've got several autographs in the past, and I'm
- 32:42Speaker 6: not a big autograph person. I know you're not a
- 32:44Speaker 6: big autograph person too, But there is a couple stories
- 32:47Speaker 6: that I have to share, two stories that mean a
- 32:51Speaker 6: lot to me from an autograph standpoint. So I grew
- 32:53Speaker 6: up in Dallasport Worth, but I was born in Mississippi
- 32:57Speaker 6: at Bluxi in Bloxi at Keesler Air Force Space, and
- 33:00Speaker 6: so I've always had this place in my heart for
- 33:03Speaker 6: Walter Payton, Mississippi guy Jackson State Mississippi, and he plays
- 33:08Speaker 6: on some Terrible Terrible Bears teams. But mid eighties, the
- 33:12Speaker 6: Cowboys were going down, the Bears were coming up. I
- 33:15Speaker 6: became a big Bears fan, and of course loved Walter Payton.
- 33:19Speaker 6: So flashed forward to nineteen ninety six. Like I talked
- 33:22Speaker 6: about earlier, my son was born nineteen ninety six and
- 33:25Speaker 6: by the time he turned he's about to turn one.
- 33:28Speaker 6: His mama and I wanted to get him something that
- 33:31Speaker 6: would be very, very meaningful for forever. So we named
- 33:34Speaker 6: him Peyton after Walter Payton with an A. And so
- 33:38Speaker 6: I contacted Walter Payton's office is before he got sick
- 33:41Speaker 6: of or any any known you know, sickness at all,
- 33:45Speaker 6: talked to his secretary, told him about you know, I've
- 33:48Speaker 6: been a lifelong Walter Payton fan because you know he's
- 33:50Speaker 6: from Mississippi. I'm Mississippi. I grew up in Dallas for Worth.
- 33:54Speaker 6: I was there at eighty five when the Bears just
- 33:56Speaker 6: killed the Cowboys, and I have my bears jacking on.
- 34:00Speaker 6: And so she's like, oh, yeah, we can, We'll do that.
- 34:03Speaker 6: We'll it will get one order for you. It's like
- 34:05Speaker 6: three hundred dollars. It's ninety nine to then. Yeah, And
- 34:07Speaker 6: so a couple of weeks later she calls me back.
- 34:11Speaker 6: She goes, I know your son's birthday is getting closer
- 34:13Speaker 6: and closer. We don't have any jerseys in stock. Would
- 34:19Speaker 6: you accept the jersey that Walter had actually worn in
- 34:22Speaker 6: a game? And I said would I? Yeah, I definitely
- 34:28Speaker 6: would accept that. And he goes, well, it's just she said,
- 34:31Speaker 6: it will just be the same price. And what do
- 34:34Speaker 6: you want to say on the jersey? Do you want
- 34:37Speaker 6: to just say Walter Payton? And I said no, I
- 34:40Speaker 6: want it to say to Peyton from Sweetness in Walter Payton.
- 34:45Speaker 6: And she calls me back the next day and she says, well,
- 34:48Speaker 6: Walter doesn't really know if you know that if he
- 34:51Speaker 6: signs to Peyton, the value goes totally down. I said,
- 34:56Speaker 6: this jersey is never going to be sold. So now
- 35:00Speaker 6: next week the jersey arrives. And also rolled up in
- 35:04Speaker 6: the jersey is an autographed picture of Walter playing and
- 35:09Speaker 6: it says, too, Rusty, thanks for being a fan all
- 35:12Speaker 6: these years, Walter Payton and I have that up in
- 35:15Speaker 6: my office at Miremont. And then the other one is
- 35:20Speaker 6: the I've gotten to be really close to a lot
- 35:23Speaker 6: of Texas A and M basketball players through the years.
- 35:27Speaker 6: I covered A and M basketball for many, many years,
- 35:31Speaker 6: the dark days of Tony Baroni and Melvin Watkins. And
- 35:35Speaker 6: so this one kid from Dallas and I got really close.
- 35:38Speaker 6: His name is a Claw, And I got really close
- 35:42Speaker 6: to AC's mom and dad, and we would talk. In
- 35:46Speaker 6: every single home game, I'd go talk to AC's mom
- 35:50Speaker 6: and dad, and she knew that I was a big
- 35:54Speaker 6: baseball fan. And you might know that Ernie Banks grew
- 35:59Speaker 6: up and down. So A C. Law is related to
- 36:04Speaker 6: Ernie Banks, really and yeah, very very seldom did people know.
- 36:10Speaker 6: And it was his mom mom's side of the family.
- 36:12Speaker 6: He was a great great uncle or whatever. And obviously
- 36:15Speaker 6: Ernie Banks has passed away since then, but I have
- 36:18Speaker 6: a ball in my office that she gave me on
- 36:20Speaker 6: the A c lost senior day that said, too rusty,
- 36:24Speaker 6: let's play two Ernie Banks.
- 36:26Speaker 9: Wow.
- 36:26Speaker 6: And so those two it's ironic that they're both Chicago
- 36:31Speaker 6: folks know for no particular reason. Yeah, but I loved
- 36:35Speaker 6: Ernie Banks, and again he was a Dallas guy. Oh
- 36:38Speaker 6: mister Cub.
- 36:39Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker 6: And so because I loved Walter Payton. I also kind
- 36:43Speaker 6: of up in WGN. You can either watch the Braves
- 36:47Speaker 6: on WTVS or you can watch the Cubs on w
- 36:50Speaker 6: GN pretty much, and on summer days, if you're gonna
- 36:54Speaker 6: watch baseball Durn during the daytime, it's gonna be the Cubs,
- 36:57Speaker 6: right sure. And then so I watched so many of
- 36:59Speaker 6: those games, learn so much about the Cubs, and so
- 37:01Speaker 6: they were kind of my national ague team. And so, again,
- 37:04Speaker 6: not a big autograph guy, but those two meet a
- 37:07Speaker 6: lot to me.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Yeah, my stories aren't near as cool as yours. I've got.
- 37:12Speaker 5: I think I only have one or two autograph items
- 37:16Speaker 5: that I still have, and one of them was from
- 37:19Speaker 5: like literally two three months ago or four whenever that
- 37:23Speaker 5: Texas series was Basi. So that Sunday, after we'd won
- 37:28Speaker 5: the first two games, it was super rainy that Sunday.
- 37:32Speaker 5: Obviously the game didn't end up getting played.
- 37:34Speaker 6: Yeah, watching out the parking lot for about four hours.
- 37:37Speaker 5: So I got there at nine thirty when the gates opened. Yep,
- 37:42Speaker 5: nine thirty am when the gates opened originally because it
- 37:44Speaker 5: was supposed to start at eleven, right, So there's a
- 37:48Speaker 5: big group of US students and a few you know,
- 37:51Speaker 5: former students not very far removed that hang out in
- 37:54Speaker 5: two of three in section two O three. It's kind
- 37:57Speaker 5: of like the unofficial student section kind of. But anyway,
- 38:00Speaker 5: so we hang out there every game. We always get
- 38:03Speaker 5: there an hour and a half for the game starts
- 38:05Speaker 5: at least when the gates open, if not, you know,
- 38:07Speaker 5: hours before that. And for Texas obviously sure we got
- 38:10Speaker 5: there hours before that. So we get there, we hang out.
- 38:13Speaker 5: They announced the games getting pushed back. The radio guys
- 38:16Speaker 5: were already there to call the game. Andrew Monico and
- 38:19Speaker 5: his color guy for that series was Hayden Shot. Okay,
- 38:24Speaker 5: so we're just hanging out and we're like, you know what,
- 38:25Speaker 5: while we're here, let's try to get some autographs because
- 38:27Speaker 5: Mike Elko was there as well. Okay, so we have
- 38:29Speaker 5: a friend who wears a hot dog costumed every game.
- 38:32Speaker 5: He goes and gets his hot dogs signed by Mike Elcho.
- 38:35Speaker 5: I've seen that guy, Yeah, yeah, yeah. He gets interviewed
- 38:38Speaker 5: by kBT X right after it. So then and then
- 38:41Speaker 5: we go over to the radio booth and we start
- 38:43Speaker 5: throwing stuff at Hayden Shot for him to sign. So
- 38:46Speaker 5: I got I have a baseball and a hat that's
- 38:48Speaker 5: signed by Hayden Shot.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Well that's pretty cool.
- 38:51Speaker 5: That's not near as cool as Walter Payton and Ernie Banks.
- 38:53Speaker 5: But so that's my one autograph story.
- 38:56Speaker 6: My first year out of college, I was down. I
- 38:59Speaker 6: was a sports show to the Galston Ellen News and
- 39:03Speaker 6: my editor sends me up to the Astrodome to cover
- 39:08Speaker 6: the Astros and the Dodgers on Galveston Night at the Astrodome, right,
- 39:14Speaker 6: so you know it's like a community night, sure, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 6: and get a bunch of people and get special discounts. Well,
- 39:19Speaker 6: he says, as long as you're going to go up
- 39:21Speaker 6: there and write a little news story of betting Galston Night,
- 39:25Speaker 6: you might as well get up there early and see
- 39:27Speaker 6: if you can do a feature story on one of
- 39:29Speaker 6: the players. Well, they're playing the Dodgers and this is
- 39:32Speaker 6: nineteen ninety and if you remember, you don't remember, but
- 39:37Speaker 6: you've seen the highlights. Yeah, Kirk Gibson the year before
- 39:41Speaker 6: against the A's comes off the bench with a wound,
- 39:45Speaker 6: I mean, barely can walk. Hits the home run and
- 39:47Speaker 6: he's circling the base pass and pumping his arms.
- 39:50Speaker 5: One of the coolest sports moments, for sure.
- 39:52Speaker 8: Cool.
- 39:52Speaker 6: So I call up there a day in advance and
- 39:56Speaker 6: I check with the media relations folks and everything. It's like,
- 39:59Speaker 6: what I got to do to interview one of the
- 40:01Speaker 6: players in the field, And so get there really early.
- 40:04Speaker 6: They're taking VP tomorrow, so just wait till they finished
- 40:08Speaker 6: with VP, asking one of the guys if he can get,
- 40:10Speaker 6: you know, a few minutes, And so I was just
- 40:13Speaker 6: gonna do a kind of a generic story and ask
- 40:16Speaker 6: some of his teammates about what that moment was right about.
- 40:20Speaker 6: So he's coming out of the cage and I say
- 40:24Speaker 6: to him, and again, this is my first major league
- 40:27Speaker 6: game to ever cover, and I asked him, I said,
- 40:30Speaker 6: mister Gibson, do you have a few minutes to talk about?
- 40:33Speaker 6: You know, the home run last year? In the World Series.
- 40:36Speaker 6: And he looks me and he's a huge guy, play
- 40:40Speaker 6: tied end at Michigan State, right, huge guy, and he
- 40:43Speaker 6: looks down at me. He goes and I can't repeat
- 40:46Speaker 6: what he said, who the blank are you? And where
- 40:50Speaker 6: the blank is Galveston and what the blank is? And
- 40:54Speaker 6: he starts screaming at me really like on the field,
- 40:57Speaker 6: like you want to talk to me, you get your
- 41:00Speaker 6: you know, eyes dotted and all this stuff. And so
- 41:03Speaker 6: I want to disappear into the turf of the astronom
- 41:06Speaker 6: right because I've got all these players looking at me.
- 41:09Speaker 6: What's early it's sir, like late April, early May. And
- 41:13Speaker 6: Gibson's off to a terrible start, like he's hitting like
- 41:15Speaker 6: one twenty three.
- 41:17Speaker 5: Have something to do with that.
- 41:19Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe that's serious.
- 41:20Speaker 9: Think well.
- 41:21Speaker 6: One of the ASTRAS players at that time got named
- 41:24Speaker 6: Casey Cant Casey Kandell, who was a utility guy, really
- 41:28Speaker 6: good utility guy. I feel this arm come around my
- 41:32Speaker 6: shoulder and he puts his arm and I'd like, I said,
- 41:35Speaker 6: I want to cry. I want to disappear into the turf.
- 41:38Speaker 6: And he puts his arm around me and he goes, hey,
- 41:41Speaker 6: you want a good story about a guy who's hitting
- 41:43Speaker 6: over three hundred. Do you want to hit a story
- 41:46Speaker 6: about a guy who's hitting a buck twenty three? And
- 41:49Speaker 6: he yells at Gibson, and Gibson kind of, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 6: brushes him off, and so I proceed to write the
- 41:54Speaker 6: greatest story about Casey Kandell ever go. And later I
- 42:00Speaker 6: tell that story at at KLAF up in Dallas, and
- 42:03Speaker 6: they used to have a sports radio show. So I'm
- 42:05Speaker 6: telling the story to their producer and he goes, oh,
- 42:08Speaker 6: my gosh, I've got a Kirk Gibson story. Used to
- 42:11Speaker 6: be when the visiting teams would play the Rangers, they'd
- 42:14Speaker 6: stay right across the street from Arleson Stadium in that
- 42:17Speaker 6: hotel that they'd have torn down. Now, Well, he goes
- 42:20Speaker 6: out there. It's you know, eleven Am. Gibson's out in
- 42:23Speaker 6: the pool. He's got you know, seven o'clock game that night.
- 42:26Speaker 6: He's just chilling reading the newspaper. And he walks up
- 42:28Speaker 6: to him and says, hey, mister Gibson, if you don't
- 42:31Speaker 6: want to sign, I understand, but i've got we've got
- 42:34Speaker 6: a charitable auction coming up, and so I've got two
- 42:37Speaker 6: baseball's here. If you wouldn't mind, and I understand if
- 42:41Speaker 6: you if you don't, well, Gibson takes the balls and
- 42:45Speaker 6: he goes, ah, sure, and he gets him the sharpie
- 42:48Speaker 6: and he starts like he's about to sign and he
- 42:50Speaker 6: throws both of the baseballs into the swimming pool.
- 42:53Speaker 5: Wow.
- 42:54Speaker 6: And my friends says like he was just just a
- 42:58Speaker 6: turn yeah, for no reason. And again he was in
- 43:03Speaker 6: the media, so he understood. He's like, if you don't
- 43:06Speaker 6: want to sign this, I get it.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 6: But then he's like, yeah, I'll take it. And it's
- 43:10Speaker 6: just like, oh.
- 43:11Speaker 5: Man, I feel like you hear a lot. You don't
- 43:13Speaker 5: really hear those kind of stories about athletes anymore, which
- 43:16Speaker 5: is good, which is good. It's interesting. I feel like
- 43:18Speaker 5: there were a lot more stronger personality types.
- 43:21Speaker 6: Well, but I tell that Walter Payton story is so
- 43:22Speaker 6: great when your hero turns out to be this great
- 43:26Speaker 6: dude and then you think you're like, oh man, I
- 43:28Speaker 6: get to talk to this guy who I watched this
- 43:30Speaker 6: heroic moment. I'm not a Dodgers fan, but just that
- 43:35Speaker 6: moment was iconic, absolutely, and so I was like, I
- 43:38Speaker 6: get a chance. I was really excited about possibly talking
- 43:42Speaker 6: and it was just gonna be like a couple of
- 43:43Speaker 6: comments and then I was going to ask his teammates
- 43:45Speaker 6: about it. So it wasn't gonna be so in depth interview.
- 43:48Speaker 6: It was like, give me two, give me two soundbites.
- 43:52Speaker 5: Sure, but no, no, that is it's interesting how some
- 43:56Speaker 5: athletes and not just athletes, some people and.
- 43:59Speaker 6: It makes you appreciate that the cal Ripkins who would
- 44:02Speaker 6: stand over there forever and ever, and you know, they
- 44:04Speaker 6: would just sign and sign and sign. Yeah, exactly. There's
- 44:08Speaker 6: a lot of guys that you know, they they understand
- 44:12Speaker 6: their role, and there's a lot of guys. If you
- 44:15Speaker 6: can get a chance to take your kids or grandkids
- 44:18Speaker 6: to spring training in Arizona and Florida, it's a great
- 44:21Speaker 6: setting because the players are so much more laid back
- 44:26Speaker 6: and a lot of times the starters they're not even
- 44:27Speaker 6: gonna play right, so they don't mind, you know, interacting
- 44:32Speaker 6: with the fans. It's used to be better than it
- 44:35Speaker 6: is now. But still if you want to give you know,
- 44:38Speaker 6: a kid, a special trip, go to a go to
- 44:41Speaker 6: spring training for three or four days.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and while you're in Tampa to stick around
- 44:46Speaker 5: for a few months and you might hear sec media
- 44:48Speaker 5: days all in full.
- 44:51Speaker 6: Circle, Full circle. I like it.
- 44:53Speaker 5: We're gonna take another break, come back before last segment.

- 48:02Speaker 10: Like Houston Astro, Houston Astros play on the Zone, names Stick,
- 48:06Speaker 10: Kelly burd Dozer.
- 48:08Speaker 5: Welcome back to Chip Howard's sports stalk Here on the
- 48:10Speaker 5: Zone eleven fifty AM and ninety three point seven FM.
- 48:14Speaker 5: Kayler Rapley here filling in for Chip alongside Rusty Person.
- 48:18Speaker 5: And anytime me or Rusty is in the studio, there's
- 48:22Speaker 5: gonna be some MLB talked about. Absolutely, So Ao West Race,
- 48:26Speaker 5: like we said earlier, has continued to just nobody can
- 48:30Speaker 5: pull away. But we've had some some prospects debut for
- 48:33Speaker 5: both the Rangers and the Astros over the last week.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Christian Curtis, I think, is the guy that you were
- 48:41Speaker 5: wanting to mention.
- 48:42Speaker 6: Actually, Christian, uh one other thing with the Rangers. I
- 48:45Speaker 6: want to mention Camp Colly camp Collie, who got called
- 48:49Speaker 6: up about two weeks ago as playing for the Rangers.
- 48:53Speaker 6: Local connection here because he is the nephew of Longtimes
- 48:58Speaker 6: twelfth Man Productions, the head of twelve Man Productions, Andy Richardson,
- 49:03Speaker 6: So it's really cool and Cam in his first game
- 49:05Speaker 6: he had a triple and he's got a two fifty
- 49:08Speaker 6: bat and average. He is unbelievably fast. He hadn't gotten
- 49:12Speaker 6: the stolen base yet, but I can't wait to see him.
- 49:15Speaker 6: If he can get on base, I mean he can
- 49:17Speaker 6: turn it, you know, a walk or a single, intoto
- 49:20Speaker 6: a double real quickly.
- 49:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 49:22Speaker 6: But local connection I wanted to mention here is Christian Curtis.
- 49:26Speaker 6: And maybe Aggie baseball fans don't remember that name, but
- 49:29Speaker 6: Christian Curtis grew up in Beaumont, played at Portinitch's Groves
- 49:34Speaker 6: and came to A and M and was part of
- 49:36Speaker 6: the A and M. The twenty twenty two baseball season.
- 49:39Speaker 6: He played in five games for the Aggies, had a
- 49:42Speaker 6: two to zero record and was really off to a
- 49:45Speaker 6: fantastic start before he had to have season engine ending surgery.
- 49:51Speaker 6: He transferred into Arizona State and had a very rough
- 49:54Speaker 6: go at it coming back from surgery. I think as
- 49:58Speaker 6: Era was over seven and at Arizona State, but everybody
- 50:03Speaker 6: knew that he had great stuff. So the Pirates drafted
- 50:07Speaker 6: him and last Saturday, Christian Curtis made his debut against
- 50:12Speaker 6: the Indians in Cleveland, and he went five Indians gave
- 50:15Speaker 6: up two hits, no runs, and struck out four. The
- 50:19Speaker 6: cool thing about this is that one of my very
- 50:22Speaker 6: good friends, former Texas A and M offensive lineman Seth McKinney,
- 50:27Speaker 6: Christian Curtis is his future son in law because when
- 50:30Speaker 6: he was at A and M, he met SE's oldest
- 50:33Speaker 6: daughter at A and M, and so that actually got
- 50:36Speaker 6: engaged at Miremont and kind of helped set that up.
- 50:40Speaker 6: And then Christians that played with Seth at our member
- 50:43Speaker 6: guest a couple of times. Great guy, So much fun
- 50:47Speaker 6: to see that. And Seth and his wife and Christian's
- 50:51Speaker 6: family were all there to see that, and obviously, says
- 50:55Speaker 6: daughter Christians fiance, So cool moment there.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Yeah, the agging network is a crazy thing even if
- 51:00Speaker 5: you didn't graduate, if you were here at all.
- 51:02Speaker 6: Yeah, and he's still, you know, in the in the offseason,
- 51:04Speaker 6: he's still going to go back and he's going to
- 51:06Speaker 6: finish his his degree and get his ring from Texas
- 51:09Speaker 6: A and M. Because still still means a lot too.
- 51:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's really cool. Yeah, he's definitely got a bright
- 51:14Speaker 5: future ahead of him.
- 51:15Speaker 6: And well again they've got some they've got some pitching now.
- 51:18Speaker 5: They've never yeah over the last few years. The pitching
- 51:21Speaker 5: has definitely not been the problem for them. They get
- 51:23Speaker 5: some hitters in there, they could be scary the Astros
- 51:27Speaker 5: or go ahead. So the Astros had a prospect debut
- 51:29Speaker 5: recently as well. Called up for this past series against
- 51:33Speaker 5: the Orioles was Lucas Spence, who I think was one
- 51:36Speaker 5: of their top prospects. I know he wasn't number one,
- 51:38Speaker 5: but he's up there. Spence. I think he's twenty three
- 51:44Speaker 5: years old out of a very small college s i
- 51:48Speaker 5: u e. Southern Southern Illinois Edwardsville, so not a big
- 51:53Speaker 5: name at all. I don't think he was a very
- 51:55Speaker 5: high draft pick, but made his debut, played in all
- 51:59Speaker 5: three games. I think he's started in two of them,
- 52:02Speaker 5: went three for eleven, So solid debut for Lucas Spence.
- 52:05Speaker 5: And he's a left handed outfielder, which is what the
- 52:07Speaker 5: Astros always need. So it'd be really nice if we
- 52:10Speaker 5: could have a homegrown one start contributing, but excited to
- 52:13Speaker 5: see where his career goes. And he's not one of
- 52:15Speaker 5: those guys who's like a career minor leaguer. He's only
- 52:19Speaker 5: been in the minors for three seasons, only one really
- 52:23Speaker 5: full season last year one hundred and sixteen games across
- 52:27Speaker 5: three levels, but he was doing pretty solid at Double
- 52:31Speaker 5: A TRIPLEA. This year called up to the big squad
- 52:34Speaker 5: and the Astros are always looking for outfield help, so
- 52:37Speaker 5: I think he's definitely got a pretty good window of
- 52:39Speaker 5: opportunity here.
- 52:40Speaker 6: I know we're closing out on time, but let me make it.
- 52:42Speaker 6: Throw out Jim Bowden today in the Athletic throughout five
- 52:45Speaker 6: trade ideas. Two of them are one to throw out
- 52:49Speaker 6: as one involves Rangers, and I'd love to see this.
- 52:53Speaker 6: They flirted with this guy for so long, Luise Rise,
- 52:56Speaker 6: who has just amazing batt and average guys power, no speed,
- 53:01Speaker 6: but guys, he's does an amazing thing. I mean, he
- 53:03Speaker 6: just puts the ball in play. The Rangers need somebody
- 53:06Speaker 6: like that. Bowden says. The Rangers would send Dalton Pence,
- 53:10Speaker 6: a left handed pitcher who's in double A very good prospect,
- 53:13Speaker 6: but not top of the line, and then Yo fran
- 53:15Speaker 6: Castillo infielder. I would love to see the Rangers do
- 53:19Speaker 6: that they if they're gonna have any serious push towards
- 53:22Speaker 6: the playoffs, that would be fantastic. One other one that
- 53:26Speaker 6: he recommended Cubs would receive Michael Waka from the Royals.
- 53:31Speaker 6: Michael Waker, former Texas A and M star who made
- 53:34Speaker 6: the All Star Game this year, pitch well in the
- 53:36Speaker 6: one inning. The Royals would receive Matt Shaw infielder Kevin
- 53:41Speaker 6: Alcantrera outfielder. Both very good young prospects for the Cubs,
- 53:46Speaker 6: but not good enough to crack the Cubs lineup this year.
- 53:50Speaker 6: So I'd love to see thirty five year old Michael
- 53:53Speaker 6: Wauka get a chance at one more playoff. Maybe that's
- 53:58Speaker 6: too soon to say, because the way he's pitching this year,
- 54:00Speaker 6: certainly he could pitch down the road as well.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:03Speaker 5: Absolutely. The Rangers getting Luisa Riya's would be a big
- 54:07Speaker 5: blow to Astros fans like myself. I know we've been
- 54:11Speaker 5: in rumors to get him as well.
- 54:12Speaker 6: Well, and the Rangers have flirted with him so many years.
- 54:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:17Speaker 6: The other one that concerns me is this according to Bowden,
- 54:22Speaker 6: and his number one trade suggestion would be see the
- 54:25Speaker 6: Mariners receive Casey Smitt infielder, outfielder d h and Eric
- 54:32Speaker 6: Miller left handed pitcher. The Giants received George Kirby, right
- 54:37Speaker 6: handed pitcher.
- 54:38Speaker 5: That would be interesting.
- 54:39Speaker 6: Kirby is a very good pitcher. Yeah, but right now
- 54:44Speaker 6: he's the sixth man and a five man rotation, and
- 54:47Speaker 6: Casey Schmidt he's having a career year with the Giants
- 54:51Speaker 6: and he's already set like career highs and homers, RBI's,
- 54:54Speaker 6: and doubles this year. That would give them some pop.
- 54:57Speaker 6: I just assumed that would not happen, but hey, yeah.
- 55:02Speaker 5: Just because the Mariners are not very good at getting hitters.
- 55:04Speaker 6: No, they're not that play. That's a tough hitting ballpark.
- 55:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the Giants would probably be pretty reluctant
- 55:11Speaker 5: to let him go. So yeah, Luisa Riats is kind
- 55:15Speaker 5: of like the Josh Bell for the Astros. It seems
- 55:17Speaker 5: like every season doesn't matter where Josh Bell is. Every
- 55:20Speaker 5: year they're like, oh, they're probably going to trade for
- 55:22Speaker 5: Josh Bell and it never happens.
- 55:24Speaker 6: Well, but we'll we don't want of these teams. Has
- 55:27Speaker 6: any hope that would be a great addition.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the Rangers more so than the Astros.
- 55:31Speaker 5: I mean, Dana Brown has said that they're going to
- 55:34Speaker 5: they're not going to sell with the deadline, and he
- 55:36Speaker 5: said that like two months ago. So it's the Rangers.
- 55:40Speaker 6: I hope that They're going to get Cody Bradford here
- 55:43Speaker 6: back pretty soon. Cody Bradford's been on the injured list
- 55:46Speaker 6: for almost two years. Jordan Montgomery had had a rehab
- 55:50Speaker 6: over the weekend. He was terrible, but yeah, he's getting
- 55:54Speaker 6: stronger and stronger I think. I mean, he gave up
- 55:57Speaker 6: like five He was supposed to go seventy five pitches.
- 55:59Speaker 6: The only last fifty three. But again, this is spring
- 56:02Speaker 6: training for him and where he is in the comeback.
- 56:05Speaker 6: Cody Bradford had a much stronger performance. If he can
- 56:09Speaker 6: be pulled out of the bullpen, that answers a lot
- 56:12Speaker 6: of questions. Because Cody Bradford for two innings or one
- 56:16Speaker 6: inning is that answers their relief question and again their
- 56:21Speaker 6: hope is they get some starting pitching back. Who knows,
- 56:26Speaker 6: no one's counting on Corey Seeger doing anything. Again.
- 56:30Speaker 5: Well, that's all the time we have today, Rusty, thanks
- 56:32Speaker 5: for joining us.
- 56:33Speaker 6: You bet enjoy it.
