- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Chinook Cedry this episode 552, I'll be your host,
- 0:21Kyle Corwin. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:23Reyes. Nate.
- 0:29KC How are we, pal? Have you, have you recovered?
- 0:40Yeah, sort of. Not really.
- 0:42Not entirely. I'm not as tired today as I
- 0:46thought I would be after spending almost a week in
- 0:49Atlanta. I hope no one's listening from
- 0:51work. I took a nap in my car for like
- 0:5315 minutes today because I just. Couldn't Are you not entitled to
- 0:57a lunch break? Not when you have that many
- 1:02emails to come back to. Wow wow wow wow.
- 1:07That's the only downside to I. I understand the structure of
- 1:12the way they do it, but like that's the only downside to a
- 1:16Home Run Derby in in an All Star game being on a Monday and
- 1:20Tuesday respectively like. Correct.
- 1:22I I I think that needs to be looked at and and considered a
- 1:27possible adjustment. Weird days, man Yeah, I mean,
- 1:34I'm I'm all for having on a weekend, but it's it's really
- 1:40just the fact that the you have the you have the build up to the
- 1:45All Star events or Home Run Derby All Star week.
- 1:48I should say. You have the build up.
- 1:50But the weird thing is that there is that there's games
- 1:52still going on. Yeah, like over the the weekend
- 1:56leading up to it and then you roll right into the Derby and
- 1:59it's just there and then I don't know, man, it's it was a lot.
- 2:04But All in all, a good week down in Atlanta.
- 2:08It was I I have to say it was it was different seeing it in
- 2:11person because at least for me, you, you've been to an All Star
- 2:16week before. This was my first time.
- 2:18It's, I feel like it's one thing to, to sort of, you know,
- 2:21comment on it or, or, or break it down from the, the
- 2:27perspective of watching it through the TV, but being there
- 2:29in person is completely different.
- 2:31Like even on the, on the flight back from Atlanta, I'm watching
- 2:36the broadcast of the Derby and the, the All Star game on the
- 2:40TV, like on the back of the headrest in the plane.
- 2:44And I'm like, we didn't see any of this.
- 2:46And that's not the product that I saw in person.
- 2:50Like we talked about, we talked about on our live streams down
- 2:52there. The the Home Run Derby is, is
- 2:57almost, I, I won't say unwatchable, but the product
- 3:00like I like I was saying, just completely different.
- 3:04And to your point, it's it's not built for TV.
- 3:06At least in the current. Format that it's it's in.
- 3:09It's an in person event. It's just the way it's.
- 3:13It's what it's structured for, especially with the the timer,
- 3:18especially with like you know the we talked about it, I think
- 3:23last part episode like the when Bryce won it in 2017, it was
- 3:3020/17/2019. 18. 18 when it was in DC and they they had the
- 3:38whole like it was fairly new with the timer, but like you had
- 3:41the whole wait until the ball lands before the next pitch can
- 3:43come. That allow.
- 3:47I think that was for TV. Like that was in mind of the,
- 3:51the production side of things. I think when we ditched that and
- 3:56now it's like completely out of the picture and balls are just
- 3:59flying. Like it was so cool in person,
- 4:04especially the angle that we had.
- 4:06We were just like, oh, like you're like pointing out a ball
- 4:10that's like half. You're not seeing it off the
- 4:13bat. Like it's just halfway on this
- 4:16trajectory of being launched and by the time it lands, you're
- 4:20like 00. And there's just like going,
- 4:24dude, just going everywhere. You'll see it in the vlog, which
- 4:27by the way, I'm only I'm 10. I've made my first round of
- 4:32cuts, so it's possible that there's still more work to be
- 4:35done, but I'm 10 minutes into this vlog from this week and we
- 4:42haven't. I haven't even gotten to the
- 4:43village on Sunday. Wow.
- 4:45So it's going to. Be like a good two hours.
- 4:47It's yeah, full length move full length motion picture.
- 4:52No, but you'll see it in the vlog.
- 4:55I I caught the reaction of the O'Neill Cruz 513 Homer.
- 5:01I caught I, I wasn't, I didn't have my phone on the 2nd that he
- 5:05hit it, but I, I had it up early enough to, to catch a reaction
- 5:09and you're like, whoa, 513 And then like as soon as you finish
- 5:15saying it, you're, you're back, You're like.
- 5:17Oh. Like it was just one after the
- 5:22other. And I, I actually, it was funny
- 5:24enough, I saw a video today where it was like, or I think it
- 5:27was like a TikTok where it was like the Home Run Derby back
- 5:30then. And it was like the guy kind of
- 5:32like, you know, loosen up swinging balls like 20 rows
- 5:38deep, That's next one. And then it's like the Home Run
- 5:42Derby now. And it it was just him, like
- 5:46he's like possibly non-stop and he couldn't even catch a breath.
- 5:49So I'm like it. It speaks to, like we said to
- 5:51the fact product in person versus on TV.
- 5:54But here's and we can get into like we can get into like
- 5:58whether it needs to be adjusted or fixed.
- 6:00I think you're in the camp that like, let's just go back to 10
- 6:02outs. I think that is I, I think that
- 6:04is the the right move. However, I think the, the takes
- 6:11need to be more limited because that that is the problem.
- 6:15That was the problem back in the day was that like it's in
- 6:19between home runs and the guys having 3 or 4 takes after each
- 6:23swing. I can see why you know, it's
- 6:28taking 1/2 hour, 45 minutes to get through 1 hitter.
- 6:32That's a problem. If there's a way to get back to
- 6:35the outs, allow production on TV to keep up.
- 6:39And someone made a really good point in our group chat where
- 6:41like you get to see like when you're watching golf, like you
- 6:48have that tracker behind, like there's a camera behind the guy
- 6:52teeing off. There's a tracker and then
- 6:55you're seeing a camera that can follow a small golf ball, by the
- 6:58way, and typically a pretty plain sky because it's so high
- 7:03and it's above the tree line. There's not really anything else
- 7:06to see as far as a backdrop goes, but somehow golf has
- 7:09figured out how to do that. I don't think it's impossible
- 7:12for us to adjust that. Maybe it had it.
- 7:15It requires it to no longer be on ESPN.
- 7:18Maybe that's a different thread that we don't need to pull out
- 7:21right now, but there's ways around doing that.
- 7:24I think the biggest thing is like how long a specific round
- 7:28can take and I think it comes down to limiting the takes and
- 7:34just going on 10 oz. No more of this timer stuff.
- 7:38There's a reason why we're seeing guys kind of like fizzle
- 7:41out. I don't know, just me.
- 7:44Either way, I don't mean to like trash it because again, like
- 7:48it's sick in person. Way better in person way better
- 7:51yeah calve some of. Your whole life, like, you know
- 7:55that? You know what it looks like on
- 7:57TV? Yeah.
- 7:58Being in person, it's like it's that quick.
- 8:00It's that easy to realize it's way better.
- 8:02Agreed, Cal Raleigh with the can we just call it like a cut?
- 8:08Can we just call it what it is? It's a controversial Derby win.
- 8:14It is. It felt that way in person
- 8:18because there was no explanation. 0 explanation.
- 8:22Not until Greg Amsinger, who by the way, I guess you're not
- 8:25hearing it on the broadcast, but Greg M singer was emceeing it to
- 8:29the crowd and we're not hearing it until it's the semi finals.
- 8:35You're just looking up the screen.
- 8:36You're like, why is Raleigh up there and Rooker not?
- 8:39As you looked at me and asked me that very question, you're like,
- 8:42what is going on here? Turns out we we we later find
- 8:46out that Raleigh's longest Homer, which apparently is the
- 8:52tiebreaker, went further by 8. Let me get my let me get my my
- 8:57decimal point spaces correct, not tenths 8 hundredths of an
- 9:02inch. What is that?
- 9:06Come on, if I've ever seen we, we'll break out the tinfoil hats
- 9:11every now and then on this show. Might have to do it for this.
- 9:15I mean, you want to talk about pushing your Golden Boy to the
- 9:18finals? And I have nothing against Cal
- 9:21Riley. In fact, any like I think it I
- 9:23think it's funny because I get this like All in all, this has
- 9:26no impact on the game whatsoever.
- 9:28I, I personally just think it's funny how Major League Baseball
- 9:32was probably under the assumption that they weren't
- 9:35going to have to pull any tricks like this.
- 9:38They're going well. Let's just hope our guy Cal does
- 9:40what he does and we won't have to, we won't have to worry about
- 9:44a, a tie breaker or swing off or any variation of that.
- 9:48And they're going well. We can't do a swing off for
- 9:51which reason? For for what reasons?
- 9:53I don't know. First of all, like why?
- 9:56Why can we not? We're we're we're doing a swing
- 9:58off for the game. Yeah.
- 10:00We can't have an actual like Home Run Derby swing off in the
- 10:04Home Run Derby. 3 swings man. I don't know but then they're
- 10:08you just know they're scrambling going how can we pull this off?
- 10:11They said eight tenths, 8 hundredths of an inch go with
- 10:17that. So moves on Cal Raleigh.
- 10:22What A and and yeah, and and in the chat, there's no way to
- 10:25measure that. I'm I think they were I think
- 10:29Brent Rooker was even talking about how like there's margin
- 10:31for error like this stat cast thing, as great as it is, as as
- 10:34much data, it's not going to you're telling me it's down to
- 10:38an 8 hundredths of an inch Crazy.
- 10:43It's just stupid, man. What was felt for Rooker?
- 10:46I really did. I.
- 10:46Really did too, man he got man, man got robbed, man got robbed.
- 10:51What was the most impressive part about the Derby for you,
- 10:57whether it was a specific, I mean, I guess the easy answer is
- 11:00the 513 O'Neill Cruz, but was there anything beyond that
- 11:04besides that, that that really stood out to you?
- 11:13I felt good about my junior Caminero takes the last few
- 11:16weeks or ever since we found out that he was in it because he did
- 11:20like he really did come onto the scene.
- 11:23You know, obviously being in the finals against Raleigh, like I I
- 11:27think that was pretty cool, but I don't think people realize
- 11:34that like maybe they talked about on the broadcast, but like
- 11:36truest is not to left, left center is is even down the line.
- 11:43Left is not that easy to do. Then I get the balls were
- 11:48probably juiced, but I mean baseballs are going.
- 11:53Not for jazz. Not for yeah, jazz.
- 11:58That's another. That was the most impressive.
- 12:01Feat for me by the way, like that was the most impressive
- 12:03display. Well, you went, you went to the
- 12:05bathroom. Well timed bathroom.
- 12:06Intentionally. Yeah.
- 12:08Well timed bathroom visit that. That's true.
- 12:11That could be the most impressive thing.
- 12:13I told you. He had more foul balls hit
- 12:16behind him. Not like yank down the line,
- 12:19like foul, foul back as if you're fighting with two
- 12:22strikes. Then he did total home runs,
- 12:25which is, you got to think, pretty difficult to do.
- 12:29But Nate, don't forget he. Didn't want to lose the swing,
- 12:33man. He gets paid a lot more than we
- 12:37do. He wants us to hear Jazz, wants
- 12:39us to know that, so don't forget that.
- 12:41Yeah, yeah. I mean, I said it during or
- 12:49during the, I don't know if you got it for the vlog.
- 12:53We talked about it when we were in our seats.
- 12:54I don't remember if I was miked up for it, but the Dominicans
- 12:59have mastered the time out. Crazy.
- 13:02Dude, and and I don't think it, it's really talked about how
- 13:07solid the timeouts are. Anytime a Dominican participant
- 13:12needs one in the middle of a round, he's got the whole squad.
- 13:16He's got someone on the towel fanning him down, someone on the
- 13:19drink, someone with the pep talk, someone like patting his
- 13:23neck, patting his face like it's and then you see like Rooker and
- 13:29he's got like one guy that comes up to him and they're like gives
- 13:32him nooks. It's like, hey, keep it up.
- 13:34I don't even think he doesn't even know the guy like the kid
- 13:37or the guy that comes up to him. It's just some stranger.
- 13:39But with the Dominicans, to your point, it's have you ever seen
- 13:43synchronized swimming, folks? That's what it's like.
- 13:45That's what it is. Everybody has a role, everybody
- 13:48knows what they're supposed to do, and when they come together
- 13:51and execute, it's art. Yeah.
- 13:54And they're they all have drip like Tatis always has drip, not
- 13:58even participating. So yeah, that was probably be my
- 14:03most impressive, I would say the Dominican timeouts.
- 14:09Trying to think anything. Any other thoughts?
- 14:11This this last week has been a whirlwind.
- 14:12Has it? Was there any any other
- 14:14observations from the Derby itself?
- 14:19My guy, My guy. James Wood I was feeling real
- 14:23good about James Wood after his first round and then I think the
- 14:31immediate. Exit.
- 14:32He was done. The I think at the earliest
- 14:34point he technically could be that's correct.
- 14:37Eliminated was was eliminated. So that was a real dagger for
- 14:41for my guy James Wood. That has no impact on how I view
- 14:45him. He's still he's still a freaks,
- 14:47still a a Prince to me. Not not sweet young Prince, but.
- 14:52Aprons. Yeah.
- 14:54One thing I think I I noticed being in person more so than I
- 14:58remember ever recognizing on TV and we kind of talked about it.
- 15:03Those moneyballs are not very easy to see.
- 15:06No, dude. They're like, I think that would
- 15:08really mess with me as a hitter to go from, you know, pearly
- 15:12white, that's all you see your entire life to hitting to this
- 15:15like kind of like semi dark pink in white ball that especially
- 15:21with like James Wood. James Wood was going when like
- 15:24at like sunset and it was this weird, like still kind of bright
- 15:29from the sun, but like not it's not dark enough for the lights
- 15:32to really factor in yet. I would struggle with that.
- 15:35I really would. And these coaches are zipping it
- 15:39in, man. They're not lobbing it up.
- 15:41Yeah, I mean, we saw, we we saw the balls like in the team shot.
- 15:44I mean, you're you're kind of sitting there looking at them.
- 15:47You know, they're right there in front of you and I'm like at I
- 15:50don't, I don't. Half the ball is like if you've
- 15:53ever, if you've ever, ever played baseball or, or were up
- 15:56close enough to track a baseball, if you have half of
- 16:01the ball, that's like a, that's almost a training drill or, or
- 16:05some sort of hitting exercise that you would do in the
- 16:07offseason in the cage. Like I, I, I guess I understand
- 16:11that there's maybe it's a multi faceted thing.
- 16:16Like maybe you're, you're trying to signify that it is indeed the
- 16:19bonus round, but also make it slightly more difficult.
- 16:22I don't know if that was the intent of behind that at all,
- 16:25but it's possible, you know, like we're you're getting a
- 16:27bonus round, but it's not going to be quite as easy.
- 16:32It talked about the O'Neill Cruz thing.
- 16:35There were some Byron Buxton, I think surprised some people.
- 16:40Matt Olson not being able to make it as deep as I'm sure he
- 16:44or the fans would have flaked. That was a little bit of a
- 16:46bummer. Big standing O huge.
- 16:49Standing O almost it it was impressive enough that it kind
- 16:56it almost said to me that like, wow, maybe the maybe they're OK
- 17:00with with Matty O they're maybe they're more OK with Maddie O
- 17:04replacing a Cunha than I originally had thought, because
- 17:07when I thought that news I like I'm not a Braves guy and I was I
- 17:11was distraught. I was like, man, I was really
- 17:13hoping we could see Ronnie. Oh.
- 17:14That just would have been electric.
- 17:16Yeah, but you know, Maddie O slots in, they give him the
- 17:18standing O like you said and and they were really behind their
- 17:22guy. They were in that like on top of
- 17:24that, like I know he's not having like the best year
- 17:27either. And I've I've at least from my
- 17:29perspective, I thought there was a lot of frustration around
- 17:31Mario lately, but no crazy support.
- 17:36We did, you know, a bunch of the pre pre Derby interviews and
- 17:39like there were a lot of people picking him as the winner.
- 17:42So yeah, it was good to see. The All Star game Switch gears
- 17:52here talk the All Star game, a historic All Star game.
- 17:56I'll just start off by saying that first ever swing off we've
- 17:59seen to to break the tie, which real quick it I hadn't
- 18:07considered it until I saw the final score on the bottom line
- 18:12of ESPN when I was watching it the next day on the back of the
- 18:15plain headrest. Like I said, did not occur to me
- 18:20that they're just given a run. The winning team is just given a
- 18:24singular run and I, I. Saw that too.
- 18:27I guess I could have I could have assumed as much, but I just
- 18:30I was like, I hadn't considered how you actually score that.
- 18:33Like does it go in the book as a tie?
- 18:35And then there's like a little asterisks like like I don't I
- 18:37don't understand what what goes into that.
- 18:40But All Star game, like I said, historic.
- 18:45The event itself was great. The fly over the the Hank Aaron
- 18:50tribute. Seeing that in person was like,
- 18:52I, you know, I'll be honest, I'm not going to sit there and like
- 18:56be looking over at you like, oh, how's he holding up?
- 18:59But I even I was I had to kind of do one of those like take a
- 19:03deep breath and kind of just look away, look off into the
- 19:06distance for just a second, sort of reco, you know, collect
- 19:10myself because they showed his wife.
- 19:13That. And I'm like, I, I can't do
- 19:16this. I'm again, not, not a Braves
- 19:20guy, but as a baseball fan, to see the tribute that they rolled
- 19:24out there and then to immediately cut to his wife, I'm
- 19:27like, Oh my gosh, man, I'm going to I'm going to lose.
- 19:32It here yeah what a what an insanely cool tribute.
- 19:36I don't remember. I don't, I don't think I've ever
- 19:39seen a tribute like that in person And like to see cause for
- 19:46those who like may have not known, like we watched the, it
- 19:51looks like maybe it was just done on TV.
- 19:54Like kind of how they do like the the graphic, like on the
- 19:59back of a mound for advertising where like obviously it's not on
- 20:02the mound, but it is showing up on TV.
- 20:05No, this was like actual projector lights on the field
- 20:10that we got to watch. So sick, so sick.
- 20:16Like such a cool way of going about it and obviously got
- 20:19Scully, you know, calling it and like it.
- 20:23It was just what an amazing cool thing, man.
- 20:27And the firework and like the footprints as he's as like it's
- 20:30timed up as he's jogging around the bases.
- 20:32Like really, really cool, really cool.
- 20:38I'm playing with a chip clip by the way.
- 20:40It's all right. I got a pin over here.
- 20:42A little, little fidget. Yeah, but yeah, man, what a oh,
- 20:49and Speaking of noises, by the way, if hello, if you if you
- 20:53hear a little rattle and just don't mind me, just my my
- 20:56Whataburger chain snagged in Atlanta.
- 21:00Shout out, shout out, hustle sport, shout out our guy JB,
- 21:02Bobby Witts, AJB shout out for the invite to the the brunch
- 21:09during All Star week. That was exceptional.
- 21:11Really, really cool. Got to connect with a a lot of
- 21:14good folks there. Sponsored.
- 21:15The event was sponsored by Whataburger, hence the the
- 21:18Whataburger chain. So I'm going to, you know, you
- 21:21know me. Keep the lid behind me.
- 21:23Man that hat. Is how about this?
- 21:25Yeah, man, right here. I'll pull it up.
- 21:28And the Whataburger. Hat Yeah, yeah, this thing is
- 21:34gangster bro. That thing is nice dude.
- 21:39This hat is unbelievable. This is the coolest hat ever.
- 21:46I mean, I'm a Whataburger when it comes to Whataburger in and
- 21:49out. You know, I'm I'm leaning
- 21:51Whataburger 10 times out of 10. Twice on Sunday now it's like
- 21:56it's not even close. In and out don't do nothing.
- 21:58In and out don't have a chain like that, bro, get out of here.
- 22:05But yeah, the game itself. The we mentioned the tribute,
- 22:10the the swing off was really cool to see in person.
- 22:15Yeah, and. Getting on that swing off by the
- 22:17way, because there was a lot of obvious argument.
- 22:21Can I insert something that's very relevant here real quick in
- 22:24the chat? Jake says.
- 22:25Was shocked at how many people left the game early.
- 22:28True. So you had you had a lot of fans
- 22:30leaving early. I think it was 6, nothing at at
- 22:35the widest margin and then they come back to tie it up and then
- 22:39we get this swing off. I think it was like it was like
- 22:426-2 and like the 7th or something like that.
- 22:46And then I think Matty O had like one last AB and then after
- 22:54I think he punched out. No disrespect but I think he
- 22:56punched out and the stadium just cleared out.
- 23:01Yeah, that's that's what it was. They were waiting for that last
- 23:03day be. Yeah, and I'm talking like way
- 23:07cleared out. And you and I were kind of
- 23:10walking around. We were thinking about like, you
- 23:11know, trying to find a new perspective.
- 23:13We were looking down and like Chophouse looked wide open.
- 23:17So we're like, let's just go down there, man, and look sick
- 23:20because they had to open up all the doors.
- 23:23But yeah, pretty, pretty strange that amount of people cleared
- 23:26out, to be fair. I mean, you know, it is a, it is
- 23:29a Tuesday night. I guess a lot of work to get, I
- 23:32don't know, it's just the money you spend to get in there
- 23:35that's. What I'm saying, dude, and
- 23:36that's what I that's what I I said I was I was like, I wish I
- 23:41had the kind of money where you could pay to get into the All
- 23:44Star game and then leave to go hit up the bars after the game
- 23:48like it's should a typical Thursday night.
- 23:50Strange, crazy when in regards to the swing off because like
- 23:54there's been a lot of back and forth, there's been a lot of
- 23:57comments and it's like, why not have your dudes in there?
- 24:00Like, you know what are why is it ending with Jose Aranda
- 24:03again, no disrespect, but like he's clearly not.
- 24:08Yeah, this is decided. This was decided before the
- 24:11game. These three guys for both teams
- 24:13were already picked out. It was already decided because
- 24:17it had to be reserves. Oh, I'm not going to lie, this
- 24:20is this is first time hearing this.
- 24:22I thought part of part of the equation here was that certain
- 24:25guys were were hitting the showers.
- 24:27Early it didn't have to be reserves, but like, yeah, those
- 24:29guys are gone. Like the second you had your
- 24:32show Haze and and your judges and and your guys that like get
- 24:35their 2-3 ABS, they're rolling out, dude, they're gone.
- 24:40They're not even there. Like you didn't see them
- 24:43celebrate after they won because they weren't there.
- 24:47And I that's kind of the whole point of them selecting guys
- 24:52that are like, they know we're going to stick around.
- 24:53They know they're going to be reserves.
- 24:55They're not starters. So I don't know.
- 25:02I, I kind of like it. I get that.
- 25:05Like, you want the biggest, most exciting aspect of the swing off
- 25:10and like this new rule, like to be revolving around our top
- 25:14guys. But like, are you expecting
- 25:18Aaron Judge and Shohei Otani to not shower, stay in the dugout
- 25:21for the next 2 1/2 hours hoping for a tie so that they can be
- 25:26ready for a swing off after being chilling for a couple
- 25:29hours, like cold for a couple hours?
- 25:31Like there's no way of, of that operating that way.
- 25:35So fact that it happened this way is what it is.
- 25:38And I, I think that's the, the, the structure of it.
- 25:42But I, I loved it. It was immediately exciting.
- 25:45The second we saw the L screen come out, we were like, oh snap,
- 25:49it's it's going down. Because I'm sure in the
- 25:51broadcaster we're like, yo, just a heads up, if it's tied, this
- 25:56is what we have people inside. We were like, what's happening?
- 25:59I had no idea. Yeah, I think even if we had
- 26:01heard about it leading up to it, Pi think people have just
- 26:04forgotten about it because there was a collective there.
- 26:07Yeah, there was like a collective understanding almost
- 26:12like at the same time where people were realizing what was
- 26:15about to happen. And so people like, we were
- 26:17already staying in the chop house.
- 26:20And then we start and we're talking to this guy to our left.
- 26:22And I look over at him and I'm like, let's hold our ground here
- 26:25because you just know, like, I think, I think somebody, even
- 26:29you or the guy, it was like, yeah, people are going to start
- 26:31coming out like cockroaches and trying to fill in the gaps.
- 26:34And sure enough, people started making their way over.
- 26:36And then they closed the doors of the Chop House, I guess with
- 26:38liability reasons, but. That's crazy.
- 26:40That pissed me off pretty bad. I don't understand that at all.
- 26:44But yeah, then we had to kind of scramble, go find a new spot.
- 26:49But yeah, man, I, I don't know, At least in person.
- 26:52I don't know if it felt as exciting on TV, but like in
- 26:55person it, it, it brought it right back to life.
- 27:00Like everyone was like immediately into it and in on
- 27:05every swing and I liked it, man. Like that.
- 27:10I don't have any other. I don't have anything really bad
- 27:12to say about the whole structure of it.
- 27:14I really enjoyed it. My only concern is that there's
- 27:18going to be like, as you know, we process the swing off we as,
- 27:25as we look back on it and, and talk about it fondly.
- 27:29And then we revisit this conversation next year, should
- 27:32there be a tie. And the same, the same thing may
- 27:35happen that there's going to be a a growing conversation about
- 27:42should this be implemented into games that matter?
- 27:47And the answer to that is no, it's too gimmicky.
- 27:51Is this, is this a great way? And I can't remember if it was
- 27:54you or, or somebody that we talked to or maybe even, you
- 27:58know, on, on the radio or something.
- 28:00Somebody made the point that it, it's, it limits using up innings
- 28:11for guys who are, I mean, call like it is.
- 28:15I mean, they're making a commitment to be there.
- 28:17You know, they, they don't necessarily have to be there,
- 28:19but the ones that are made the decision to be there and, and
- 28:22they're going to offer the time and their energy and all that.
- 28:27You know, if, if this thing goes 15/16/17 innings, we're putting
- 28:32guys in a, a little bit of a jam and you're impacting the start
- 28:35to the unofficial second-half. If, if we let this thing go too
- 28:40deep. So to to look at this as an
- 28:44appropriate cap or finish to an exhibition, I think it's fair,
- 28:52but it it does not it it has no place in regular season or post
- 29:00season baseball. I.
- 29:03Don't know if I fully agree to be honest.
- 29:06I think, I think it should be kind of tiered in a way that I
- 29:16would say. I didn't see this coming, by the
- 29:19way. I mean, it's not like we're
- 29:22seeing a ton of 14/15/16 inning games, especially now, but I
- 29:27would see it. I could see something tiered
- 29:29where it's like, you know, let's play the 10th and 11th straight
- 29:33up and then like 12th and 13th with the ghost runner.
- 29:37And then at that point if we're still tied, let's go swing off.
- 29:43It's kind of like what hockey does.
- 29:45Hockey does the shootout during the regular season and then just
- 29:48straight up OT during the playoffs.
- 29:52I don't think it's something that needs to be implemented in
- 29:54the postseason in any way at all.
- 29:57Same with ghost runner, nothing like that.
- 29:59It should just be straight up baseball.
- 30:01But I get the argument of doing it for the regular season for
- 30:04the fact that like it's it's already pretty tough, especially
- 30:11when starters aren't going as long right now.
- 30:13And especially with like the number of bullpen arms that are
- 30:16going to be used and the fact that like it can really truly
- 30:19impact maybe the next two series after that.
- 30:24If you have a 141516 inning game.
- 30:28And I don't know that I I'm not going to I'm it's not a hill
- 30:35that I'm willing to die on, but I'll say just for the pure
- 30:38excitement of it. I don't hate it.
- 30:41I just don't know when it would be.
- 30:42I would love to see like give me 12 innings of regular baseball
- 30:47and then do it. Just get rid of the ghost runner
- 30:49in general, go 12 innings regular baseball.
- 30:53And then in the 13th, we got to swing off.
- 30:56That's an interesting question. Would you rather do away with
- 31:00ghost runners and have a swing off?
- 31:03I don't want it in the 10th. I don't want to swing off in the
- 31:0510th. I would rather have regular
- 31:07baseball for yes. I would rather get rid of the
- 31:10the ghost runner. Have regular baseball for like
- 31:1312 innings. No, no, I I hear you having
- 31:15like, like you said, like have it tiered, have like a, you
- 31:18know, a threshold you got to reach.
- 31:19I understand what I'm saying for the for those who are like, no,
- 31:22we can't have a swing off in regular season baseball.
- 31:25Would you rather do away with the ghost runner and have a
- 31:29swing off 1213 even 14 innings into the game, or would you have
- 31:37the ghost runner? Would you keep the ghost runner
- 31:39if you had to have one one or the other?
- 31:42That's an interesting question. I'd be curious to get people's
- 31:44takes on that because that's yeah.
- 31:46Cause 'cause reality of it is we're not going back to the
- 31:49baseball the way it was. We're we're not going back to a
- 31:52pre ghost hunter game. We're just not.
- 31:57So it's it's really kind. Of it just sucks that it happens
- 32:00right away. Choose the lesser of the two
- 32:02evils I. Guess and and maybe I'm super, I
- 32:04mean like my team sucks at it. If if it's very evident when
- 32:08teams are bad at extra innings baseball, then it just sucks to
- 32:12see games end that way. So but I think give these teams
- 32:17a better chance of winning straight up and then, you know,
- 32:22if you have, I'm saying, obviously I'd prefer regular
- 32:25season to I'd prefer regular baseball in general.
- 32:29Sure, nothing, I'd rather just have it happen.
- 32:33But if you have to have something to try and cut the
- 32:37game a little bit shorter in those crazy long inning, crazy X
- 32:41training games, I don't know. This is at least more exciting.
- 32:46I think it's more exciting than a ghost runner.
- 32:49Well, Speaking of changes real quick, because I, I want to get
- 32:52to a, a, a bigger point of discussion real quick.
- 32:56Your thoughts on seeing the ABS challenge system in person?
- 33:03Because I believe we saw it. We are at the game and it's hard
- 33:07to track every, you know, what's going on every pitch because you
- 33:09know, you and I are, are chatting it up.
- 33:10We're we're running to grab food this and that.
- 33:13But to my, to my knowledge, I think there was only two
- 33:18instances of it being challenged.
- 33:19Is that, is that correct? Yeah, I think right.
- 33:23In fact, I only saw one. And I, I asked you and you said
- 33:272. So yeah, collectively, I think
- 33:30we only saw it twice. I don't know.
- 33:32I mean, it goes back to what we were saying about the the Rooker
- 33:35Cal Cal Raleigh thing of being like this short, like you're,
- 33:40you saw one of them call and it was like literally less than
- 33:43right quarter of an inch touching the strike zone.
- 33:46And you're just like, what are we like, how is it?
- 33:49How is it that exact? How is it possible for it to be
- 33:52that exact? I just it's hard to buy.
- 33:55Well, I can understand how you know if if you're trying if if
- 33:59the if the goal if. The aim is to have the correct
- 34:01call even if the margin of error exists with the computer ABS
- 34:05system. I can understand the argument
- 34:08for well, it may not be perfect, but it's going to be better out
- 34:12of 100 instances than what the umpire is going to give you.
- 34:16Out of the 100, I think what sucked is that it was like I, I
- 34:19think one of them was in a big moment in an inning that got out
- 34:22of a jam and the inning ended that way, which I think sucked.
- 34:27And they just. Walk off and they go into the
- 34:29dugouts and you're just like it's, it's kind of like the the
- 34:32walk offs where it's like a play at the plate.
- 34:35We can't quite celebrate fully because we have to review it.
- 34:38Like it just, it kills the moment for me then, yeah.
- 34:43And I think I said that to you, I, I was like, you know, you
- 34:46could be looking very realistically like this is not
- 34:49a, not a pipe dream, not far fetched.
- 34:51You could very realistically be looking at an instance where
- 34:55you've got a pitch sort of like what you said, you've got a
- 34:57pitch to end the game even like if this, if this ends up in post
- 35:02season baseball, if it ends up in the World Series, you could
- 35:04look, you could there's a a scenario where a World Series
- 35:08could end with everyone collectively in the baseball
- 35:12world waiting on an ABS review. That sounds terrible.
- 35:17Which again, I like, it's very cherry picked, very nuanced.
- 35:21I I understand that, but absolutely it's a possibility
- 35:24because you could, you could challenge the call and it is
- 35:29what it is. Anyway, enough about the ABS
- 35:33because it, we, I don't think the sample size was large enough
- 35:36to really have a, a true feel for it or to get a true feel for
- 35:40it. But let's talk about the
- 35:43question that I think is making the rounds right now.
- 35:45And it, it, it typically does this time of year.
- 35:49Is the MLB All Star game the best All Star game in sports?
- 35:54It's not even close. I'm going to preface this right
- 35:57now because my tweet, you know, I don't, I'm not, I'm not going
- 36:00to. Like some, he caught some fire.
- 36:02I'm not going to pump my tires here, but my, my tweet has let
- 36:06me check. Well, I'm not intentionally
- 36:10trying to pump my number my, my tires here, but I'm just trying
- 36:12to give context to what I'm saying.
- 36:14It's been seen by 2.4 million people.
- 36:16My tweet was All Star game viewership by sport MLB 7.2
- 36:22million followers. We just, we just got that.
- 36:26Little down from last year, by the way.
- 36:27Little down, but still comparatively.
- 36:30Than everything else. 7.2 for MLBNBA. 4.7 million NFL, 4.7
- 36:37million NHL dumped their All Star game.
- 36:40And then I said baseball folks, and boy, did I hit a nerve with
- 36:44the hockey Bros because they came at me guns blazing, telling
- 36:51me how great, how great the Four Nations face off was.
- 36:58And boy did I throw it right back at him, telling him how
- 37:01much I love the Four Nations face off.
- 37:04They didn't mix next week, but my entire point and that they
- 37:09could not get this through their skulls is that it's not an All
- 37:13Star game. The NHL had an All Star game as
- 37:17we know it as sports fans. They no longer have an All Star
- 37:21game because they did away with it because it was unwatchable.
- 37:25And what did they do? They replaced it with a
- 37:28tournament style event called the Four Nations Face Off that
- 37:33now serves in place of their All Star game event.
- 37:37So they don't have an All Star game that's relevant to this
- 37:40conversation. Yeah, they're.
- 37:41Almost like eliminated from contention.
- 37:46I will follow up that by reiterating the fact that I
- 37:52absolutely loved watching the Four Nations face off.
- 37:56I really only, I really only get into I, yeah, I get into hockey
- 37:59like in the post, like in the playoffs and then stuff like
- 38:03that and the Olympics and then this.
- 38:04Like there was like a mini Olympics.
- 38:06It was sick. Very high stakes hockey.
- 38:09I, I love it. I, I'm not going to sit here and
- 38:11pretend like I watch regular season hockey.
- 38:13I don't. But the Four Nations face off
- 38:16was incredible. But it's not an All Star game.
- 38:21Correct. With that said, that leaves
- 38:24Major League Baseball as having, I think just subjectively,
- 38:29subjectively and objectively the best All Star game in.
- 38:34Sports, No, I mean the NFL, the Pro Bowl is is basically two
- 38:39hand touch at this point. And it's like no one wants to
- 38:42they just put their bodies on a line for for months and like,
- 38:48why would we go down to Hawaii and risk it again?
- 38:51You know what I mean? Like let's just enjoy the trip
- 38:53with the family and not get hurt.
- 38:55So which I can't blame, like I can't blame the players for
- 38:58that. The NBA, they don't play defense
- 39:04every year. Now it's like 135 to 132 at the
- 39:07end of no, that's. That's regular season basketball
- 39:10now. I don't know if you've seen it's
- 39:11closer. I think the all the NBA All Star
- 39:13games go up to 60. They push like 200 points.
- 39:16It's stupid, man. It's crazy.
- 39:19There's no defense there. There's there's just the aspect
- 39:24of baseball. And shout out Ryan Ripken,
- 39:26because on his podcast he was talking about this.
- 39:28You can't fake throwing 100. You can't fake trying to hit
- 39:33100. It has to be done with maximum
- 39:37effort. It has to be done with what
- 39:39we're used to seeing out of our players during the regular
- 39:43season. There's no way of faking it.
- 39:46You can't fake play defense. You can't fake hit.
- 39:50This is full speed because that's the only way we know how
- 39:52to play. And you're not seeing anyone up
- 39:56there trying to lob it. I mean, you had Clayton Kershaw
- 39:59with a mic on saying he's about to say here comes the cheese and
- 40:03it's 89 because that's his Max effort.
- 40:05You know what I mean? Before that.
- 40:08Oh yeah, it's Paul Skeens at one O 2.
- 40:10Like it's maximum effort because that's the only way you know how
- 40:16to play baseball. It's the only way it works.
- 40:19Of course it's the best. Of course it's it's it's, it's
- 40:23not even close. Of the major sports, I would put
- 40:29hockey second, even though it probably shouldn't even be in in
- 40:35in contention. Basketball 3rd and football the
- 40:39Pro Bowl last dead last. I think the the games are kind
- 40:46of cool where they're like, you know, playing dodgeball and
- 40:49stuff and like you kind of see like their athleticism of what
- 40:52it looks like doing other things outside of football.
- 40:54But like I'm still not tuning in and watching that.
- 40:59It's ours. And it I don't care about if
- 41:02it's the only sport on during that time.
- 41:06I don't care. You could put all the other
- 41:08sports on at the same time. Ours is still better.
- 41:11Exactly that's that was another point that kept getting brought
- 41:14up is like, well, of course it leads in viewership is the only
- 41:16thing on. I'm like, this isn't 1960 when
- 41:19there's only three like broadcast networks on like we,
- 41:23we're we don't have three channels that we're choosing
- 41:25between. You could literally do anything
- 41:28you want in today's day and age. Like you, you don't have to
- 41:33watch the singular sporting event that's on.
- 41:35You can go do other stuff. You can take a walk, you can go
- 41:39fishing, you can eat a snack. You can take a nap.
- 41:43You can literally do whatever you want.
- 41:45You could go to the bathroom, you don't have to watch
- 41:48baseball. So that that conversation makes
- 41:51zero sense to me. Quite literally zero sense to
- 41:54me. And Nate's getting more work
- 41:55emails. So we should probably, we should
- 41:58probably wrap it. No, we actually, we, we do need
- 42:01to wrap it. We're on a little bit of short
- 42:02of a little time crunch here. So why don't you just make sure
- 42:06we got a recap? Thoughts in there?
- 42:08My charger turned off hold. On all right, got our thoughts
- 42:15on the on the Home Run Derby. We're back.
- 42:18So is your e-mail. We're we covered covered our
- 42:23thoughts on the Derby, at least the the you know, the heavy
- 42:26hitters. I'm sure we missed some things,
- 42:28but All in all, I mean you guys watch it.
- 42:30If if you're listening, you're watching you watched it.
- 42:34I think we covered the the main points of discussion here, but
- 42:39regarding the trip, I know there's folks that that are
- 42:41going to want to hear about the trip and, and we may, we, we may
- 42:45cover that in the next part if we think of it or if you know,
- 42:48lends itself to the conversation, But you'll get the
- 42:52full, you'll get the full experience with the vlog that's
- 42:54coming. Like I said, I'm.
- 42:56Genuinely give, give that, give that a look, give that a look.
- 43:00Kyle does a good job of editing and putting it together and it's
- 43:03like there's just two hours behind the scenes.
- 43:07Hopefully fun nonsense. It's not actually going to be a
- 43:11full motion picture, but it's going to be.
- 43:13It's going to be an hour and a half.
- 43:14No, not even an hour and a half. That was completely joking.
- 43:18It's going to be, it's going to be, it's going to be good
- 43:19though. It's going to be good.
- 43:20It's going to have a lot, lot packed in there.
- 43:22I've already cut out a lot of stuff that I didn't want to, but
- 43:25you know, for the sake of sanity while you're watching it, I just
- 43:28want to make sure you get the the main points.
- 43:30But All in all, great week, great All Star week.
- 43:36Maybe we'll be at next year's in Philly, who knows, Time will
- 43:38tell, but but other than that, that's all I got.
