- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Coach Cab on the UConn Hockey Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: We launch the season Friday night, 645 on the radio
- 0:05Speaker 1: from Toscano against the Penn State Nittany Lions. I'll have
- 0:09Speaker 1: all the action for you right here on the UConn
- 0:11Speaker 1: Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and the VarsityNetwork.com. Well, Mike,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Joey Muldowney has lost his line mates, but he comes back.
- 0:21Speaker 1: He worked with a skating coach or two in the offseason, put.
- 0:24Speaker 3: On 14 pounds.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Have you seen that translate to what he can do
- 0:28Speaker 1: on the ice? Because I'm excited to see what that
- 0:29Speaker 1: does for him and his talent.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Joey's been a very consistent player. And
- 0:35Speaker 2: right from the get-go, he was a kid that came in,
- 0:38Speaker 2: he had to cut his teeth a little bit on
- 0:39Speaker 2: the fourth line. I think that helped make him a
- 0:43Speaker 2: better 200-foot player. And as I've mentioned many times, even
- 0:49Speaker 2: the year he had 29 goals. And then I think
- 0:52Speaker 2: last year, what did he have last year? I know
- 0:53Speaker 2: he was in the teens.
- 0:54Speaker 1: 17.
- 0:56Speaker 2: 17. Yeah. But he doesn't compromise his defensive play to
- 1:03Speaker 2: score goals. And that's the thing that I appreciate about
- 1:05Speaker 2: him the most.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And he plays in all assets of the game, not
- 1:10Speaker 1: just five on five power play.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And he's even a pretty good penalty killer.
- 1:13Speaker 2: The penalty killer, he's a five-on-six. I would say over
- 1:16Speaker 2: the last two years, he's probably scored the most empty-neck
- 1:19Speaker 2: goals for us. And, well, I mean, people might smirk
- 1:23Speaker 2: or laugh about that, but that's a skill. If you
- 1:27Speaker 2: want to win games, you better have guys that can
- 1:29Speaker 2: execute five-on-six and put games away.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Right, and a great example would be the BU game
- 1:35Speaker 1: in the quarterfinals. I mean, great play off the boards,
- 1:39Speaker 1: just passing it to himself, getting a run at a fenceman.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I mean, that takes some craftiness.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Right, and he buried in the Connecticut Ice game against Quinnipiac.
- 1:48Speaker 2: He got the 5-on-6 goal to secure that victory as well.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Now, when you go work out in the offseason and
- 1:56Speaker 1: you deal with a skating coach or work with a
- 1:58Speaker 1: skating coach, and I'm sure I'll ask Joey the same
- 2:02Speaker 1: thing here, what are they trying to emphasize? What are
- 2:04Speaker 1: they trying to improve in the skating?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I think they're all so specific,
- 2:11Speaker 2: but I would say you're trying to get quicker, you're
- 2:15Speaker 2: trying to get balance, and you want to have more
- 2:19Speaker 2: strength on your skates, I would think. But I don't know.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I haven't gone to a skating coach in a long time,
- 2:24Speaker 2: so I'm not sure what the newest methods are these days.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Did you have skating coaches when you played?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Sure. We had Paul Vincent's Power Skating, yeah. Okay.
- 2:34Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned the two Ethans and Caden Shahan. They
- 2:39Speaker 1: played a lot last season, and they had solid seasons.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Do you expect them to be together again, or are
- 2:46Speaker 1: you going to break them up a little bit? And
- 2:48Speaker 1: what are your expectations for these three to step up
- 2:51Speaker 1: and play some new roles?
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that we're still kind of mixing and
- 2:57Speaker 2: matching our lines a little bit. We'll get some continuity
- 3:01Speaker 2: this week in practice. I'm sure at some point they'll
- 3:03Speaker 2: play together, but whether it be on a power play
- 3:06Speaker 2: or special team or even five on five, but, We
- 3:10Speaker 2: certainly need those guys to make a jump, just like
- 3:13Speaker 2: Ryan Tattle and Tabor Heaslip and Jake Percival made big
- 3:16Speaker 2: jumps from their sophomore to junior year. We're going to
- 3:19Speaker 2: need that from those guys.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Mike, Brennan Dumphy, Trey Scott, guys like that on the
- 3:27Speaker 1: blue line. Obviously, Anthony Alain Samaki, too. They bring back
- 3:32Speaker 1: a lot of veteran players. work on the blue line here,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but now it's time for another step up. Like for
- 3:39Speaker 1: Trey Scott, he jumped in, never got out of the
- 3:42Speaker 1: lineup in his first year. Quarterback, the power play. Kai
- 3:47Speaker 1: Janvry is in that list too. What do you see
- 3:50Speaker 1: next for these guys?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Actually, I think Trey sat his first couple games, which
- 3:58Speaker 2: before he started getting into the lineup and then he
- 4:01Speaker 2: basically worked his way onto the top power play because
- 4:04Speaker 2: of his play. So much like our forwards that I
- 4:09Speaker 2: just alluded to, they're going to have to take big
- 4:12Speaker 2: roles and they're going to have to take leadership roles.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Trey was just elected a third captain last week by
- 4:19Speaker 2: the team convincingly. So we're expecting him to take a
- 4:23Speaker 2: vocal and leadership role on our team. Kai is, a
- 4:28Speaker 2: lot of people look at Kai and, Think, oh, he's
- 4:32Speaker 2: an undersized defenseman. He's got to be a really elite
- 4:35Speaker 2: offensive defenseman because he's undersized. He might be our best
- 4:40Speaker 2: defensive defenseman. He is so good. His feet are so good.
- 4:43Speaker 2: His stick is good. His compete level is second to
- 4:49Speaker 2: none on our team. So, again, he's going to have
- 4:52Speaker 2: to play. He might have led our team in minutes
- 4:54Speaker 2: last year, and I see him playing a very similar
- 4:57Speaker 2: role this year.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Well, Kai certainly took a big jump in the plus-minus department.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I think he was around zero, maybe even minus freshman.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I think he led the team last year, plus 16,
- 5:07Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken. I know he and Castillo were
- 5:10Speaker 1: pretty close.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Which reinforces my point on his defensive play. He's outstanding defensively,
- 5:17Speaker 2: and he can chip in offensively, too. He's out there.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Because his defense is so good, you hear this all
- 5:23Speaker 2: the time, great defense leads to offense.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I think that's true for Kai.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Mike, who's your goalie on opening night? I know it's
- 5:32Speaker 3: only Monday.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Usually when we have the weekly media discussions, it's like
- 5:36Speaker 1: wait till Friday. But I imagine everyone, the three guys
- 5:39Speaker 1: have really competed hard for a shot to start the opener.
- 5:43Speaker 2: They have. And true to form, I'll make that decision Thursday.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Well, we know about the other two, but tell me
- 5:51Speaker 1: about this young man from Finland that you have on
- 5:53Speaker 1: your roster between the Pipes.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, VT is a fifth-round pick of the Devils. He's
- 5:58Speaker 2: got great size. He's 6'4. Had a really good year
- 6:02Speaker 2: for Chicago last year in the USHL. He's got a
- 6:06Speaker 2: lot of promise. He handles pucks very well. So, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: I don't know if he'll be playing Friday.
- 6:13Speaker 3: He might.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He might not. But at some point, he'll certainly see
- 6:17Speaker 2: game action.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You mentioned handling the puck well.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Did I not hear a rule change about the trapezoid
- 6:23Speaker 1: coming into– College hockey, too?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it has come in. So the goaltenders can only
- 6:29Speaker 2: handle it in the trapezoid. They can't be outside it. Okay.
- 6:32Speaker 3: See, we've got rule changes from Cav. Any other significant
- 6:34Speaker 3: rule changes whatsoever for the upcoming season?
- 6:37Speaker 2: I think it fades off. So you're going to see
- 6:38Speaker 2: your sticks have to be down. You'll see guys, I think,
- 6:41Speaker 2: get thrown out early on in the season. You can
- 6:45Speaker 2: make a defensive hand pass right now, which was a
- 6:49Speaker 2: new rule. So timeouts. You can no longer call a
- 6:55Speaker 2: timeout after an icing. So there are certain little rules
- 6:59Speaker 2: that they put in. I'm not remembering all of them
- 7:01Speaker 2: right now, but there's a few. We got schooled on
- 7:04Speaker 2: it last week by Brian Murphy, our commissioner of officials.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Well, that timeout thing after an icing, that's a big one.
- 7:11Speaker 3: That's a huge one.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. Certainly.
- 7:14Speaker 1: All right, more with Cav as we continue. This is
- 7:16Speaker 1: the UConn Hockey Coaches Show for a Monday night here
- 7:18Speaker 1: on Learfield.
